Spiegeltent is in town. The Famous Spiegeltent is coming to Sorrento STEP into a world of wonder as you enter the famous Spiegeltent, all the way from Belgium to our very own Sorrento.

A dream of restaurateur and theatrical producer, James McPherson, the Spiegeltent will be in Sorrento for four months from Boxing Day. “I used to work for many years in the entertainment industry doing PR for theatre and producing shows. After moving down to the peninsula and buying Three Palms, this seemed like the perfect way to combine my loves of great food and wine and live performance,” says James. “Spiegeltent is also a tribute to George Coppin, the Father of

And what a tribute Spiegeltent will be to the late, great Mr Coppin, whose love of Sorrento, hard work and dedication made it the holiday destination it is today. “So we are dedicating a Summer’s entertainment to him, as without George Coppin, Melbourne’s theatre life as well as Sorrento would never have been this famous,” says James, who first fell in love with the Spiegeltent when he saw it in Melbourne many years ago. “The inaugural summer festival program will start with 30 shows in 30 days as a tribute to George Coppin.” Spiegeltent meaning ‘tent of mirrors’ is a luxurious pavilion constructed with wood, mirrors,

canvas, and leadlight glass with velvet and brocade. Guests relax in booth seats surrounded by magnificent décor in this transportable entertainment venue that dates back to the late 19th century. Rumour has it that the mirrors were positioned so that guests could make discreet eye contact with one another, and only a handful of these mirrored tents are left in the world today. Having played host to some of the world’s most famous artists, circus and burlesque performers, whose essence remains in the mirrors and velvet canopy today, the Spiegeltent conjures up images of mystery and magic. “Guests will be transported to another era when they enter the

JAMES McPherson is passionate about three things - great cuisine and wine and fabulous entertainment which is why his restaurant ‘Three Palms’ continues to get rave reviews.
“We were one of the first restaurants to introduce the share dining experience to the area when I took over seven years ago,” says James from the main front dining room with its open fireplace and dreamy elegant décor.
With its signature three palms in the front garden, the restaurant is in century-old Sorrento home in the main street, serving a fabulous array of tapas style share dishes.
“I used to come here regularly and loved it so much I decided to buy it,” says James with a laugh. “After a little trial and error, we settled on the tapas style menu which head chef, Joel Wroblewski

The trends in food are seeing a return to where our food chain all began. Consumers want to know where their food has come from, how it’s been made and what has gone into the process of making it. Restaurants are championing small producers and artisan products that support this philosophy, which has been happening for quite some time, so much so that the big commercial operators have started to rebrand themselves with this sort of wholesome image. Food scandals around the world, such as the horse meat scandal in Europe and various other false labeling sagas, are driving a new conscientiousness amongst consumers who are demanding a fresher more authentic approach to food.

At Cakes & Ale (102 Ocean Beach Rd), they buy their coffee from their friends who deal directly with the small farmers that supply the beans for roasting, their cheese is from Victorian cheese makers and their fish comes from a fishing co-op across the bay who catch what they sell - so they know where their food is coming from, when it was harvested and who gets the money for growing it and of course how delicious it is. Many Sorrento restaurants try and buy as local as possible, direct from the supplier, and many gourmet food stores try and do the same. Consumers are also a lot more adventurous with their wine, and that industry too is evolving. Built for Isaac Bensilum, Architect J.F. Gibbons, this Edwardian Hall, when built, comprised a foyer with side retiring rooms, extensive dance floor, deep stage, lower dressing and store rooms, marble courtyard, two shop spaces and upper residential space. Home to travelling shows, it was used also for community meetings, receptions, welcome home functions, dances and roller skating. Also used as a cinema from mid 1920s; now three cinemas occupy the building. Classified by the National Trust.
Hotham Rd, Sorrento
First section built and licence granted in 1872 for P.J. Martin. John Farnsworth, stone mason, was brought in from Adelaide for this contract. In 1873 tenders called for thirty extra rooms. Designed by M. Hennessy. Extensions continued until 1928. This large conglomerate of Victorian limestone buildings includes a second major two storey building with similar stonework and roof treatment to that of the original. Classified by the National Trust.
Built for the Continental Hotel Company Ltd with Hon George Coppin as Managing Director was the fashionable place to stay for many years. Early licensees included William Hughes (later owner of the Oriental Coffee Palace) and Isaac Bensilum (1890 to 1913). Original Victorian design was amended by an enclosed second storey and balcony. The single storey section was originally a separate general store. Believed to be the only four storey limestone building in Australia. Classified by the National Trust.

Headmaster of Geelong Grammar School, J.B. Wilson, donated the land for this beautiful neo- Gothic limestone church. Built along ‘Portsea Road’ near the then school and butcher’s shop, in anticipation of Sorrento’s development west. Nave completed 1874 and used for various community functions as the ‘Athenaeum’ for some years. Transepts followed in 1889 and the chancel in 1908-11. Quite intact interior. Classified by the National Trust.

The first storey of the corner limestone building was erected in 1886 for J. Lentell who added the second storey in 1894-95. Taken over in 1920 by David MacFarlan and William Stringer who started a new store next door. Very intact examples of buildings used commercially in the late 1880s and added to later. Stringer family continued in the business until 1970s. A landmark property in Sorrento, known locally as Stringer’s Corner.
Built 1869-70 for John and Jenny Watts, who had nine children between 1865 and 1885, seven of them while at Ilfracombe. They operated a small farm on the property at Holyrood Ave. Descendants lived in the two room cottage and its extensions (now dismantled) until 1966. Restored and moved to the NHS Museum site as a community project by Sorrento Rotary Club, Viewable during Museum opening times. Classified by the National Trust.

George Coppin The Proud Father of Sorrento
VISITORS travel from far and wide these days to visit Sorrento, with its fabulous cafes and restaurants, its boutique galleries, gift, jewellery shops, and day spas but this didn’t happen by accident. It all started more than a century ago under the watchful guise of a most colourful character, George Seth Coppin. An actor and philanthropist, Coppin is responsible for Sorrento’s illustrious rise to fame as a tourist destination.
By the late 19th century, Sorrento had gained a reputation as the most fashionable seaside resort, and Coppin the title “Father of Sorrento”. A typical day trip started with a two or three hour cruise on a paddle steamer, some of which held up to 2000 people. A tram, built by Coppin’s Sorrento Tramway Company, travelled one mile up the main street from the front beach to the back beach, where tourists bathed and took walks, and then travelled home at the end of the day.
As if that wasn’t enough, Coppin was the driving force behind the establishment of the Ocean Ampitheatre Company in 1870 with projects like the Continental Hotel and several guest houses that remain standing today. So next time you’re in Sorrento take a look around at it’s living history, where hotels and guest houses still stand proudly on the main street, a limestone reminder of the legacy of the late, great George Seth Coppin.
The year is 1870 and Coppin, who had his own property in Sorrento, chartered a paddle steamer to bring a group of businessmen to the seaside town and show them the unique tourist possibilities on the southern peninsula. Using his theatrical talents and charisma, Coppin passionately went about persuading their support on land development and a regular paddle steamer from Melbourne to Sorrento. Soon the pier was opened and Coppin established the Sorrento Steam Navigation Company bringing out their first series of pleasure ships, the Ozone, Hygeia, Awroa, and Weeroona. Within 10 years, paddle steamers were bringing tourists to the seaside town for day trips or holidays.
THE restored steam tram platform just up from the Sorrento ferry terminal is also worth a visit, as is the old tram proudly displayed next to Marlene Miller Antiques (128 Ocean Beach Rd), now transformed into café seating which is a great experience for kids and adults alike.

Art to inspire Meredith Langmaid’s work leads you into a world where art becomes a part of every-day life. GALLERY Vespa, a small but eclectic gallery, is home to a myriad artworks on display, and sure to inspire even the most discerning art lovers. Many say it’s Sorrento’s bestkept secret art gallery.
“The gallery started with a lot of my friend’s art and the premise of keeping costs low so that artists can have more of a chance of making a living,” says Meredith, who now has 29 artists and photographers on board.
With her own background in photography and art, and a passion for art and the rights of artists, it seemed a natural progression for owner, Meredith Langmaid to open her own gallery. “My interest in photography began at the age of 12 when my parents gave me my first camera. That was it. I was hooked. I always felt like photography and art was an extension of myself,” says Meredith, who ended up running a photography studio in St Kilda for many years until making the move to the peninsula. By sheer serendipity, Gallery Vespa became the place for Meredith to be, after always dreaming of owning a gallery where she could support other artists.
Set in the heart of Sorrento, Gallery Vespa is about to celebrate its first birthday, dedicated to art, design and photography. Pieces include James Robertson’s fascinating works on display. “In the plethora of visual images of this contemporary world, Robertson’s paintings fascinate through their extraordinary illusionism - so real that they seem to reach beyond reality and, through their heightened perception, create a world of their own,” says Meredith. “We also has an exceptional aboriginal artist by the name of George Ward Tjungurrayi , where the artist is depicting the song cycle associated with the artist’s many dreaming sites and the locations of significant natural sites.” Vespa continues to be supportive of local artists and has an understanding from an artist’s point of view with Meredith an artist herself. The gallery holds a large stock of works from local artists, photographers and sculptors and even a few of Meredith’s pieces on display.

“We have paintings of various genres and have a international client base and many associations in the art and music scene,” says Meredith. “Vespa has now grown to numerous works on display with regular shows and a selection of the artists on their books.” Gallery Vespa draws you into another world with delicate abstracts by Donna Magree, earth-inspired works by Gidja, Peninsula artist, Walker, Archibald finalist 2013, Vicki Sullivan, mixed media artist, Maureen-Whitaker, and Peter Jex Byron who has works hung in the Portrait Gallery of Canberra. “We will also be holding a Spring show at the gallery to continue to celebrate our local and international artists,” says Meredith. Hot Art Tip Art is a very personal thing. It can certainly be a statement but at the same time it needs to compliment the space and not be the dominating factor. It’s usually an idea to pick out a colour in the painting and have it represented elsewhere in the room so it ties it all together.
There are 9 different art spaces (not including all the interior stores) that exhibit and sell a plethora of local, national and international artists and sculptors collections. Be inspired... Sorrento Portsea Artist’s Trail WALKING along the Artist’s Trail from Sorrento to Portsea, it’s easy to imagine how the seaside could bring a quiet inspiration to the artists whose replicated works sit proudly on display.
Funded by a grant from the Mornington Peninsula Shire, the trail was established in 2004 and continues to inspire artists and visitors alike with a proposal to add more art works in the future.
And what a way to display such works of art, in the very spot the artists stood to paint their masterpiece. With 14 reproductions along the trail, visitors can see the views as they were captured by artists such as Sir Arthur Streeton, John Perceval and Albert Tucker.
Begin your art tour in Sorrento where you will see Albert Tucker’s aptly named “Sorrento”, painted in 1942. Walk along the foreshore from the front beach and then venture up to Point King where Millionaires Walk provides a wonderful outlook over the clifftops between Point King Road and Lentell Avenue.
The trail is accessed by car and then by foot, with views across the beaches and bay towards the Bellarine Peninsula on one side, and the rugged coastline of Bass Strait on the other. Artists like Emanuel Phillips Fox and John Perceval capture this wild side of our peninsula in their artworks displayed near St Pauls Beach and Diamond Bay.
Enjoy an easy, scenic coastal walk along the southern most part of the Mornington Peninsula on the trail that is the brainchild of a group of Sorrento residents who were inspired by the Collioure Art Trail in the South of France.

Point Nepean National Park WITH its spectacular natural and built landscapes, Point Nepean National Park is a place that leaves an immediate impression on anyone who visits. It is truly one of Victoria’s beautiful natural landscapes. The park is located at the very tip of the Mornington Peninsula and has some of the most breathtaking panoramic views of Bass Strait, the Rip and Port Phillip Bay. The entrance to Port Phillip Bay was the most heavily forted port of the British Empire and was known as the ‘Gibraltar of the South’. Visitors can see an example of this at the very point of the park where Fort Nepean is located. It is where an extensive network of forts, gun emplacements and tunnels are located. Also at the park is the Quarantine Station, established in 1852, it offers a unique opportunity to see an

Here visitors will find many historic buildings used in quarantine which include hospitals, a disinfecting complex, a morgue, cemetery and much more to explore. Point Nepean has an extensive network of tracks to cycle or walk. One recently opened is the Range Area Walk, it takes visitors through an area of the park where the Officer Cadets, who occupied the site for three decades, trained. Features on this walk include a 400m firing range and Monash Break and Light with sweeping views of the park and Melbourne City. Visitors can also relax and enjoy a picnic at Point Nepean with a shade of a Moonah tree. They are part of a coastal habitat complete with wildlife including echidnas, bandicoots, wallabies, reptiles. In the surrounding waters visitors might also spot bottlenose Dolphins or Australian Fur Seals.

Spring and summer sees Sorrento and Portsea come alive with a number of events and activities for all ages and stages to participate in. In December, Christmas Carols & Fireworks are hosted by the Sorrento Portsea Chamber of Commerce on the Sorrento foreshore (Sunday December 14, 6.30pm) and St John’s Anglican Church host their annual carolling event. Sorrento also offers fabulous Christmas shopping events. PLUS, keep an eye out for the exciting Spiegeltent coming soon this December 2014.
January is certainly the month for action with the Portsea Pro-Am Golf Tournament, Portsea Twilight Run/ Walk at Point Nepean National Park plus an annual Craft Market, Rotary Club Annual Art Show, the Couta Boats compete in the Portsea Cup, Portsea Polo, Sorrento Bay Swim, Portsea Swim Classic and Australia Day celebrations at the Sorrento-Portsea RSL. Getting Around SORRENTO is only a short 90 minute trip from Melbourne and around 40 minutes from around the Mornington Peninsula or ferry trip across the bay from Queenscliff. There are a few interesting ways to get around (apart from self drive).

• The Scandinavian look is still a big hit – 1960’s inspired sofas raised off the floor with ‘cigar shaped’ timber legs (think the tv series ‘Mad Men’). Although nowadays the sofas are much more generous in comfort and size than the original. This style is carried through to dining tables, sideboards and lighting. • Round coffee tables are very in right now too, as it softens the hard edges of a room. • Last year we saw a lot of strong vibrant colours coming through in fabrics – this is still on the mark but it only needs to be a splash of colour - a scatter cushion here and there set against a neutral toned fabric on a sofa. • Linen bedding is very desirable

How to Design your Space
• Firstly, take into consideration the size of the room and how you intend to use the particular space and the mood you wish to create. How do you want to use the area? Is it for the whole family to enjoy, to evoke a relaxed feel, or are you wanting to create a more formal space?

• Natural lighting plays a huge role too – so lay out and furniture placement should be top of the list. If it is a dark space with little or no light, then mirrors and clever lighting placement will be needed. • Employing the services of an interior designer should be high on the list, as it saves making costly mistakes. • Furniture should never domi-
nate or be lost in a room. People either buy oversized furniture which makes the room look small and heavy, or buy furniture that is too small and it all looks lost and uninviting. A good little trick is to place newspaper on the floor of the exact size and layout you are intending to use & then see if it works.

CLAIRE Kelly gets up early. She leaves home at 2.30am in the morning and is back in her boutique flower studio Hummingbird Blooms by 9.00am. ‘I go to the city markets once or twice a week. Many hours were spent in the garden with her father admiring the natural world. Carmel of Sorrento Experience the seaside delights of historic Sorrento Village ‘CARMEL’ was built in 1904/05 at the same time as Gannawarra (now Fletchers Real Estate) in the heart of the modern day Sorrento Village at 142 Ocean Beach Rd. The two buildings were run as Guest Houses for six years. The two properties were called ‘Antrim’. ON the 11th July 1911 the property was bought by the Stringer Family who had Stringers Stores, a Livery Stables and Motor Service. They renamed the property to its existing name of ‘Carmel’ after a relation back in Ireland. Between 1961 and 1991 there were three developers who subdivided the land and rented the house out to families. In 1991, Bill & Louise White purchased the property and started up a Guest House taking it back to its original purpose and catering for several thousands
