Only a short drive to be a world away...

Live the Life

SORRENTO is one of those places that it doesn’t matter how long or short your stay, you’ll always feel like you’re a world away. It has great charm with its commanding limestone buildings and breathtaking bay and ocean beaches, but the village is a destination all of its own. Sorrento Village offers an eclectic mix of old fashioned boutiques, galleries, antique and toy stores that are owned and managed by the person who serves you, but you can also get the high end chain stores that you find in the most cosmopolitan of city shopping centres. Recently Sorrento has expanded with some trendy new retailers, amazing unique contemporary interior stores and a new Salt Room for wellbeing therapy. There is a great choice for foodies and coffee lovers as well, highlighted during the Taste of Sorrento Winter weekends program which will take on a new spin in 2017, as well as accommodation and all basic services within a short walk from town. If you love history, it abounds from a Museum right at the edge of the shopping strip, an historic cemetery, limestone buildings, ghost tours and of course Point Nepean National Park and Sorrento Portsea Artists Trail only a short drive away. Sorrento is possibly THE best destination for a girls weekend away – shopping, eating, shopping, massage, shopping, walking, …and did I mention shopping? No matter what the weather, good friends can enjoy each others company, have a few drinks, a few laughs and not have to drive anywhere as the village has it all in one place. Keep an eye on the website sorrento.org.au for up coming events or to read this mag on-line, or download the Sorrento Live the Life App from the App Store or Google Play. You can also stay social with the Sorrento_Village Instagram and SorrentoVillage facebook pages. We hope you enjoy this magazine, which is a muchloved companion for the visitor and local alike. It’s a keeper! Natalie Garner, Sorrento Portsea Chamber of Commerce

Focus on Sorrento

SORRENTO is a popular tourist destination on the Mornington Peninsula, nestled between Portsea and Blairgowrie. It is situated on a thin strip of the Mornington Peninsula, facing Port Phillip in the north and the open waters of Bass Strait in the south. Location by road: 89 km south of Melbourne.

Sorrento FACTS

In 1803, 30 years before the founding of Melbourne, Sullivan Bay in Sorrento became the site of Victoria’s first mainland European settlement.

A horse and steam powered tram which ran between the foreshore and the back beach opened in 1890 and closed in 1920.

Due to a lack of fresh water the settlement was short lived and subsequently moved to Hobart in Tasmania. Victoria’s first magistrates’ court, public hospital, postal service and government printing office were established in Sorrento. The first Victorian wedding, christening and funeral services were held at Sullivan Bay.

Australian singer Tina Arena released a song “Sorrento Moon (I Remember)” in 1995. The song is about Arena’s childhood memories of summers past with her family at Sorrento beach.

The first settlement site overlooking Sullivan Bay includes graves believed to be of first settlers. Sorrento Post Office opened on 10 January 1871.

Sorrento is home to the “best vanilla slice ever” from Just Fine Food Delicatessen. Darbys Rock off the back beach was named after John Darbyshire who was marooned there during a king tide.

Dame Nellie Melba sang to raise funds for cemetery gates which rusted over time and were taken down and dumped at the tip where they were souvenired and used as a garden ornament. Federal Senator John Button, State MP Vince Heffernan, and Dame Zara (Holt) Bate are buried in the cemetery. Hannie Rayson’s well-loved Hotel Sorrento, which premiered onstage in 1991 and was made into a feature film in 1995, explored some immediately identifiable terrain for many audiences when it first appeared.

Sorrento’s commercial centre is located at the bay end of Ocean Beach Road. This wide, attractive boulevard features a variety of shops, restaurants and cafes with its major landmark being the multi-storey Continental Hotel which was built out of limestone in 1875. The crescent-shaped Sorrento Front Beach is flanked by an attractive foreshore area with lawns, shelters and English trees, plus a couple of small jetties. The sheltered waters make it ideal for swimming and other water activities.

George Coppin ‘The Father of Sorrento’ led a colorful life including stints as an actor. G.S. Coppin was a prime mover in the development of Sorrento. His theatrical talents were considerable but as an entrepreneur he left an indelible mark on the seaside town. Coppin was not only involved in land sales, but also encouraged the development of paddle steamer links between the capital of Victoria and even a small steam train to transport visitors to the area from the Bay beach jetty to the Ocean Beach. With its rich history, Sorrento has been the home of many ghost sightings over the years. The Sorrento Ghost tours continue through the town of Sorrento, encompassing 12 historic sites with eight that are said to be home to ghosts or linked to mysteries of the past. The first spiegeltent was brought to Sorrento in December, 2014, all the way from Belgium. A dream of restaurateur and theatrical producer, James McPherson, he brought the spiegeltent to Sorrento to pay homage to George Coppin. Two original shows were created as a result of collaboration between James and Jason Coleman of Ministry of Dance fame. The Sorrento Park, established in 1870, contains a variety of trees, including an Aleppo Pine grown from the seed of the Lone Pine of Gallipoli.

The Baths Rising from the ashes WHEN The Baths' owner, James Gibson, swore that his restaurant would be back after it was ravaged by fire, he wasn’t kidding. Exactly one year and one week after the historic beachfront structure was destroyed, The Baths has reopened better than ever. Like a Phoenix rising from the ashes, the rebuilding of the iconic landmark has taken just on a year to complete and James says it has already been incredibly well received. “We are open seven lunches and six dinners and will do seven dinners in January. We are also getting lots of community groups in, Christmas parties, corporate groups, and golf groups and have some weddings booked as well,” he said of the modern Australian restaurant, set on the beach at Sorrento. “The Baths are renowned for our breathtaking views and relaxed atmosphere and whether you’re joining us for dinner after a day on the beach or celebrating a special anniversary, The Baths offers a unique dining experience in a beautiful location.”

10

sorrento.org.au

/sorrentovillage

As part of the rebuilding process, James says there have been many improvements; none-the-least is the indoor/outdoor area. “We have created an indoor/outdoor room set up to accommodate about 40 diners and with views even better than before,” said James. “And the venue is the ideal place for a wedding. You can get married on the beach and have the reception inside, or have the restaurant as a backup venue for the ceremony. We can do sit-down weddings for 150 and cocktail style for up to 180 people.” Rich in history, The Baths was named after the Sorrento Sea Baths which were located on the current site in the late 1800s and early 1900s. “The new building has a lovely, fresh, clean feel, which people have described as beach décor. We have a weatherboard exterior with recycled timber posts, timber floor and decks, white and blue interior, marble bar tops and fire place,” said James. “We have /Sorrento_village

live the life also just employed a whole lot of local staff. Our head chef is Chris Jenkins, who came from New Zealand and has cooked all over Australia and the world. It is an approachable menu, with a great kids menu, lots of fish and seafood, and the best gourmet hamburger down this way.” The Baths’ passionate team of chefs have put together a menu using fresh and seasonal produce to create a variety of exciting yet simple dishes. “Our chefs can cater for all dietary requirements such as vegetarian or gluten intolerance; just let our staff know. The Baths is a family friendly restaurant offering a children’s menu in addition to a la carte,” said James. The Baths offers an extensive wine list with all different blends of wine by the glass so there is something for everyone to enjoy. “We have a range of popular varietals and blends,

both red and white, from a number of vineyards throughout Victoria, expressing true regional characteristics,” said James. James says another major improvement to the venue is the extensive acoustic plaster to minimise the noise level for customers. “It is just all part of making the venue as functional and practical as possible for our customers.” A gift voucher from The Baths can be perfect for a birthday, anniversary, milestone, business gift or a thank you. The gift voucher can be for any amount and redeemable for lunch or dinner and may carry a brief personalised message. The Baths is at 3278 Point Nepean Road, Sorrento. Taste of Sorrento A winter celebration for the senses THE first weekend in June once again saw the gastronomic celebration known as the Taste of Sorrento, a mouth-watering food and wine event with a weekend feast of gourmet activities aimed at indulging both the tastebuds and the senses. In its seventh consecutive year, the program included a variety of gastronomical delights including master classes, cooking demonstrations and tastings, themed lunches and dinners, gourmet menus, wine, beer, and coffee. A true celebration of winter, the Taste of Sorrento encourages visitors and locals alike to head out from the heater and check out all the incredible offerings the historic seaside village has in store. Born entertainers - guest food writer Bob Hart and chef author Paul Mercurio - took to the demonstration kitchen to display their interesting cooking techniques. Guests enjoyed the unique experience of a gin masterclass, creating their own bespoke gin and learning the fascinating history of gin techniques along the way. Tea lovers took to the high seas to enjoy a sail on the bay, indulging in a high tea served in the privacy

of the beautiful Portsea Lounge with sweet and savoury treats on a two hour Searoad Ferry adventure. There were dinners, demonstrations and tasting events like the Dinner for the Garden, held at Cakes and Ale Bistro, raising money for the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation, encouraging primary school children to grow, cook and eat their own food. And for those who love a good competition, the Vanilla Slice Eating comp was not to be missed. The famous vanilla slice at Just Fine Foods has been the talk of Sorrento for nearly 30 years, and the challenge saw a group trying to eat vanilla slices using no hands. There were farmers and foodies markets, with the sights, sounds and smells to tantalise the senses. Visitors enjoyed the delights of providores, producers, food stalls, wine, beer and cider makers from the Mornington Peninsula region and beyond, and had a chance to take in the historic seaside town without the enormous summer crowds. /Sorrento_village

Sorrento Park's Moonahs If these trees could talk

AT Sorrento Park the moonahs are remnant examples of how things used to be. As survivors they are a reminder of the past. The largest ones would have been growing soon after Europeans began regularly sailing through The Heads into Port Phillip. If these trees could talk, their tales would be fascinating, encompassing the arrival of the Europeans and the lives of Aborigines who roamed what was later to be named the Mornington Peninsula. Today, Sorrento Park is a manicured garden, with expansive lawns, garden beds, bitumen paths, barbecues, a children’s adventure playground and a rotunda. One of the paths follows the clifftop, overlooking Sorrento pier in one direction and a succession of privately owned jetties stretching back toward Point King in the other. The beaches near the jetties are open to the public but are relatively exclusive because access is limited. The park has been a drawcard and a haven for families since the 1870s. An 1876 brochure described it as “A government reserve planted with English trees”.

16

sorrento.org.au

/sorrentovillage

Its attractions included a bowling green, croquet lawn and gardens, and walks “laid out in great taste”. By 1917 the park’s trees were providing shade in summer for thousands of picnickers and visitors. It also had “a splendid” 130-yard (120-metre) running track; a circular, banked track for cyclists and runners; open-air dance floor; “commodious refreshments rooms and parcels office”; and dressing rooms. Until the start of the World War II many visitors travelled by steamer from Melbourne. It was “a favourite destination” and “used extensively for annual trade picnics by the tradespeople from Melbourne”. The park fell into disrepair during the war, especially with the demise of the bay steamers in 1940. Mornington Peninsula Shire now manages the park, with the emphasis on passive recreation, except of course at the children’s adventure park. Its trees still provide summer shade, and the barbecues and undulating lawns are ideal for picnics. Sorrento Park is located at 3423 Point Nepean Rd, Sorrento /Sorrento_village

The Toy Workshop Good old fashioned fun! SORRENTO might be known for bucking the trends other villages embrace, but no shop embodies this philosophy like The Toy Workshop. Noel brought his wholesale experience to Sorrento’s retail district eight years ago. “I found a shop I liked in Sorrento, jumped the fence and loved it. Been doing it ever since!” “We’re a tiny store because we don’t do licensed products, we don’t do things aligned with movies, and we’re not chasing trends. Our philosophy is very little plastic, no batteries and no licensed products… our toys stand the tests of time.” The same can’t be said for the modern-day toy chain, where Disney-licensed products, cheap plastic and electronic gadgets feature almost exclusively. Noel’s operation appeals to reminiscent oldies just as much as kids lucky enough to be on the receiving end. “Our toys encourage children, parents and grandparents to play and laugh together as the children make their way through the colourful maze of wonder. We’ve got puppets that hang from the ceiling, there’s a treasure in every corner… people come back three or four times and always find something new.”

22

sorrento.org.au

/sorrentovillage

But it’s their philosophy that really makes The Toy Workshop stand out in a crowded market. “We buy quality things that aren’t going to fall apart the second you take them out of the packaging. It’s very hard for a bucket of blocks not to do what they’re designed to do,” says Noel, in a humble but comedic simplification. “I do have amazing staff that treat the business like it’s their own, which is wonderful.” Just as well – with three kids, a wife and a footy club to coach, Noel’s days are packed to the brim. “If you want something done, ask someone who’s busy”; he quips. But it hasn’t crippled his success story as a small business owner, with newer locations sprouting up in Hawthorn and Berwick over the years. Catch him if you can – he hasn’t retreated from the retail side for the comfort and safety of an office. Not yet, anyway. The Toy Workshop 1 George St 5984 4227 www.thetoyworkshop.com.au

Antipodes Bookshop & Gallery A Sorrento landmark NESTLED in the heart of Sorrento is Antipodes Bookshop & Gallery, a place where books, art and ideas merge. Peninsula resident, Jane McAuliffe brings to the business her passion for books and community and feels that it is a ‘dream come true’ to own this beautiful business. “It’s been a wonderful three years since taking over the bookshop. We’ve loved getting to know the locals and weekenders and feeling part of this coastal community,” said Jane. Antipodes strives to be a place where reading matters, where reader and author are connected and where the space invites discovery and inspiration. Antipodes’ well-read staff and exceptional, personalised customer service mean the right books find the right reader. The bookshop is involved with a number of author events and experiences that enhance the reading experience.

However, the best thing about Antipodes according to Jane is its independence. “By shopping here you are part of a community that employs friends and neighbours, supports local arts and schools and continues to find new and exciting authors. You give more than a book from Antipodes when you shop local,” she said. 2017 will see some exciting plans for the shop – a new dedicated children’s area, an expansion of local artisan works and a Literary Lunch season in conjunction with a neighbouring bistro. Sorrento is a thriving town and Antipodes is thrilled to be growing with it! The Antipodes staff looks forward to welcoming you soon. Mubble Gourmet Ice Creamery Yummy cold stuff ! WHEN sunshine hits the Southern Peninsula late in the year, the sand disappears under a groundswell of feet, the parking lots fill up and the humble ice cream cone reigns supreme, enter Mubble – Sorrento’s premier dispensary for any and all variety of yummy cold stuff! Owners Paul and Kristen know hospitality, having worked all over the world, from the Caribbean to Asia and back home in Australia, where they decided to ‘settle down’ in the bustling Peninsula village of Sorrento. “We’d been down here for a few years looking for a small business, but

nothing really grabbed us,” Kristen explains. Then a little ice creamery by the name of Glace Gelato and Juice came up for sale in 2011, and with a little creative renovation and innovative design, Mubble was born. Their specialty is the namesake, a curious blend of marshmallow and bubblegum; “the kids’ favourite! Speaking of mashups, a range of chilled beverages from classic juices to smoothies to delectable milkshakes, born of their fascinating ice cream flavours, ensure something for the health-conscious as well as the thrill-seekers out there.

But they’re not just local business owners; they’re top corporate citizens too. Says Kristen, “we use local small businesses and wholesalers whenever we can… we make all our ice cream on site.” It doesn’t end at the expedient, either. “Every year the local preps have a little graduation dinner which we donate to, as well as school fundraisers.” At Mubble, Paul and Kristen make it happen. “My mum was an amazing cook and I used to watch her in the kitchen a lot. In fact I just brought back one of her old dishes, passionfruit powder puffs (individual sponges that you fill with whipped cream and icing sugar and leave for six hours). I’ve dragged a lot of her recipes out over the years, like her chutney which we call Nana Bev’s Kick Ass chutney, even though her name was Phyllis,” said Iddles, laughing. “Mind you she always cooked steaks well done. I said to myself ‘Oh my God, steak isn’t that bad’.” Moving to Melbourne and focusing on my apprenticeship and putting my energy into food was amazing. In 1975 I won Apprentice of the Year, and Chef of the Year in 1985, knocking off Mietta's and top Melbourne restaurants.” With a history of successful restaurants, multiple awards and flourishing catering business, Iddles should be proud of his achievements. Even though he is constantly busy, Barry still likes to get hands on and cook when he can. “Just the other day we had a table for 30 booked but 45 turned up, so I jumped in and gave the boys a hand on the fryer,” he says with a laugh, explaining it’s a careful balance between being a free spirit and being incredibly organized. For Barry, travelling has been an important part of understanding cuisine and he tends to take off to

exotic locations numerous times throughout the year, including Vancouver, London, Asia and Europe. He also teaches cooking at restaurants in Singapore twice a year. His favourite food is anything innovative and exciting, whether it is food from a street cart or a Michelin restaurant. Apart from his entrepreneurial and gastronomic success, the vibrant chef is also the ambassador for Fare Share, a Melbourne based charity aimed at rescuing surplus food from supermarkets, farmers and other businesses to be redistributed as cooked meals. Barry opened Skinny Duck which raised $130,986.95 supporting FareShare on its first night earlier this year, creating 260,000 meals for Melbourne’s underprivileged. “It raised $84,000 the next night and we will do it again in February or March next year. If I got every restaurant to get a dollar off every customer that’s enough to feed one and a half people so that’s my next thing. No one’s ever done it, and that’s the quickest and easiest way to knock it out,” said the practical Barry. “When I travel overseas and see beggars, I don’t give money, but always carry a bag of fruit for them.” You can contact Sorrento Catering regarding your wedding or event on 0412 580 968 or visit their website at www.sorrentocatering.com.au.

evolved, so did their family – with four kids to raise, they decided to change gears. “Restaurants are nights and weekends, so we thought we’d swap it for daytime work… we just love the old building and the history behind it.”

“We come from a food and wine background, we’ve run restaurants in the past and Warwick was a wine sales representative,” says Helen. They regularly offer tastings of gourmet wine and cheese and are locally famous for their takehome meals, a growing market in Sorrento. “The foodie influence is strong with us!” Helen and Warwick cut their teeth in Sorrento’s burgeoning restaurant scene, running the Smokehouse (called Knockers in those days) for 11 solid years. But it’s not just the local grocery store, an outlet for fine wines and a busy café that make Stringers Stores special – it’s part of the cultural fabric of Sorrento. “We’ve seen a lot of comings and goings. Our family’s grown up here. I still think there are enough familyowned businesses to maintain that uniqueness and charm we’ve always had, and we’ve accommodated newcomers as well.” If you’re only in town for a day or two and want a history lesson with your sit-down meal, Stringers is the place. Over 40 years of experience CARMELA D’Amore is a local celebrity, and one of Sorrento’s best cultural and culinary imports. Born in Kilmore to Sicilian immigrants, she’s a first generation Australian who came to the Mornington Peninsula in 1974 with her sizeable family. Not only does she lead the team at Sorrento Trattoria from the kitchen (which she shares with her son Joe), she volunteers at Sorrento Primary School and St. Joseph’s, where she assists with their annual Italian Day. As well, she runs a cooking school (Carmela’s Cucina Classes) on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Carmela and her family literally live and breathe food. “I’ve been cooking for more than 40 years professionally as a Sicilian chef.” Her husband also happens to have the gene – his

Buckley's Chance

Originality and great food! TAKE a brief stroll down Ocean Beach Road and you’ll quickly realise there’s no shortage of restaurants, cafes and food outlets. A common thread reveals itself; decades of village history, a specialty cuisine, a focus on customer service. At first glance, Buckley’s Chance ticksall these boxes. Head inside, though, and you’ll stumble into a whole new world, which is quietly but proudly distinct from its neighbours, with a wholly original culture and climate.

Pam instead argues “he was a survivor, living with Aboriginals for 32 years... when he returned to society he tried to help Aboriginal and white people reconcile.” His story was cut tragically short when run down by a Tasmanian tram, but the legend lives on, reinvented through art, ambiance and an attitude that’s not afraid to ‘buck’ with change. “It’s a good story!”

Pam and Fred might be village veterans dating back to 1981, but where others have attempted to freeze time, they’ve rolled with the trends and ushered in an age of prosperity for Buckley’s Chance.

The pair even welcome the prospect of competition, seeing it not as a threat but an incentive; “because you’ve got to lift your game!” In a shire that shies away from change, it’s more refreshing than iced tea on a sunbathed banana lounge.

Some might recoil at the thought of naming their establishment after a convict.

The result is nothing short of a holiday within your holiday, a choose-your-own-adventure in

Named after a Sorrento identity, George Morce, who was a stonemason in the late 1800s, the restaurant reflects the wonderful, cheeky character of the man. Relax...unwind Relax and unwind, even if only for a few hours

SORRENTO is an idyllic getaway destination to relax and unwind, even if only for a few hours, although a day, a weekend or even a week is much better for the mind and soul. The fresh sea air, no matter what time of year, clears the head and heals the soul, whether you’re walking on the rugged back beach, strolling along the picturesque foreshore, walking through the many national park trails close by, cycling, fishing, surfing, paddle boarding, swimming with dolphins or simply taking in the heritagerich village shopping strip with some much needed retail therapy. Of course, if you would prefer to really unwind and relax, check out Marlo Spa or Hotel Sorrento Spa, with both offering various health and wellness treatments and catering to groups – a great choice for weddings, hens weekends or even those great girls’ weekends away just to recharge the batteries.

New to Sorrento are the therapeutic salt rooms which offer an array of physical and mental health benefits, plus you can use the newly opened Re-Creation gym in Ocean Beach Rd to work off the indulgences. Yoga and Pilates are also on offer at LuLuLemon Athletica or Ocean Fitness, and you can do silent Yoga on the beach with Re-Creation Health Club. If you want to opt for a new hairstyle there are local hairdressers Chicago Hair, or Three Seas Hairdressing. Most medical, nutritional, muscular or other needs can also be met within the village with a number of services housed in the Medical Centre, or by nutritionists at Sorrento Natural Therapies and Sorrento Physiotherapy. You can now even get your nails done at Ruby Nail & Spa. If you’re visiting for a wedding, a girls’ getaway, a couples retreat or even a family vacation, you won’t need to leave the village to have all your health and beauty needs fulfilled. /Sorrento_village

Marlo Spa A sacred wellness space

WHEN Marlo Johnston-Garratt opened her first salon in Sorrento 18 years ago she had no idea it would evolve into the sacred space it is today. Marlo Spa, located in the heart of Sorrento is an Ayurvedic Spa that specialises in Ayurvedic therapies as well as traditional beauty and Medispa treatments and was inspired by India's ayurvedic ancient wisdom of healing and philosophy on wellness. By use of spa, beauty and holistic therapies, Marlo Spa provides real lasting health solutions. “We do so many different things at the salon, it’s hard to put a label on what we are,” says Marlo from her salon with its earthy, modern, ayurvedic style décor. Marlo Spa has also been hand picked to offer the PH Formula system for skin rejuvenation, which is now offered at the salon. “This skin resurfacing system creates a process where the acids are absorbed into the skin, causing tightness. This is an exciting opportunity for us to offer it at Marlo Spa as we are one of only a handful chosen in Victoria,” says Marlo. Marlo Spa’s list of treatments includes massage, facials, salt scrubs and firming body wraps, lifestyle counseling,

Shirodhara, hypnotherapy, workshops and classes. Traditional basic beauty treatments like manicures, pedicures, lash extensions, waxing and tanning are provided in the lower level of the spa with a set up perfect for groups. Be it a bridal shower, a hens party, or just a catch up with friends, there are packages available to make this time the most memorable and exclusive for you and your party. Every package includes complimentary champagne on arrival and time to relax in our beautiful space overlooking the outdoor spa with more refreshments including seasonal snacks. To complement any wedding party the team members at Marlo Spa are professionally trained Napoleon Perdis make-up artists. Once you are absorbed in the sacred space of Marlo Spa you will be transported to a place of tranquility and bliss. A sacred space reminds us of our true nature and brings us back to centre, a place where everyone is equal. Marlo Spa is at 43-45 Ocean Beach Road, Sorrento. sacredspace@marlospa.com.au Phone 5984 5300 www.marlospa.com.au

well-being Where health is priority SORRENTO Physiotherapy has a long and proud history of providing innovative, competent, professional and personal service to the Mornington Peninsula community. Established in 1989, the team at Sorrento Physiotherapy has been taking care of the peninsula for over 25 years. Husband and wife team, Graham and Virginia Reid are proud that Sorrento Physiotherapy is committed to excel in the provision of friendly, scientifically-based, cost -effective treatment to enable the individual to reach their maximum potential. “At Sorrento Physiotherapy we pride ourselves on making your health a priority and, being local residents, we are available for consultation by appointment

The best in personal care IF you get sick or injured while in town, you’re bound to wind up at Sorrento Medical Centre sooner or later. It’s a family business of 25 years, with its story dating back to 1989. Dr. Peter Meggyesy opened the doors of his quaint limestone cottage as a solo GP before teaming up with Dr. Adrian Murrie in 2003. The pair has now been the principal GPs in Sorrento together for the last 13 years. Backing up the doctors is a dedicated support team of receptionists and nurses. All are local and experienced with a wealth of knowledge about the clientele and local services. Here you’re not just another number, so expect the best in personal care.

Sorrento Physiotherapy seven days a week. Sorrento Physiotherapy specialises in the treatment of acute and chronic spinal and sporting conditions, paediatric and adolescent conditions, women’s and men’s health, as well as general musculoskeletal injuries,” said Mr Reid. “Physiotherapy assessment and treatment has a strong scientific basis and offers effective, rapid and safe solutions for the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of spinal pain, sports injuries and pain of musculoskeletal origin such as osteoarthritic joint pain, muscle strain, ligament sprain and tendonitis.” Physiotherapists specialise in assessing and treating musculoskeletal injuries. Following a thorough assessment a

physiotherapist will determine a cause for your injury and provide you with advice and education on how to manage it. “Physiotherapists will then aim to treat your injury using a variety of techniques with a focus on manual and exercise therapy. Manual therapy techniques include mobilisations, manipulation, massage and stretching,” said Mr Reid. “Physiotherapy can also assist with treatments including ultrasound, electrotherapy, massage, bandaging, taping, and bracing.” Sorrento Physiotherapy 5/108-118 Ocean Beach Rd 5984 4938 www.sorrentophysiocom.au

Sorrento Medical Centre The variety of services offered on site might explain this traffic. “It’s really grown over the last 15 years… we’ve got allied health services including physio, massage therapist, pathology, psychology… a neurologist, an infectious diseases consultant, podiatry and even HEARINGLife. Basically the centre caters for every aspect of your wellbeing.” Thank goodness for that – they’re the only medics in town! “We can manage emergencies and do certain procedures… serious stuff we have to send up to hospital.” There’s an ambulance station down by the footy oval on Hotham Road if the need arises. The team prefer to focus on the cause, rather than just treating the

symptoms. “Preventative health is something we try and encourage. Our services include immunisation, skin cancer checks, travel advice, antenatal care and a range of checks aimed at managing risk factors before they become a problem. Our Facebook page will keep you abreast about what staff in the centre are doing – walks for cancer, flu season, breast cancer and men’s health awareness week.” Whatever your condition, you’ll receive a caring response at Sorrento Medical. Peter Alexander Setting sights on Sorrento

SLEEPWEAR King Peter Alexander was never really into fashion, originally wanting to be a vet or get into catering. But as fate would have it, the founder of the multi-million dollar Peter Alexander Sleepwear brand, found his way into ladies pj’s and has never looked back. “I was never really into fashion and certainly didn’t dream I would be in this industry as none of my family was even in it. I wanted to be a vet but my grades didn’t allow it,” said Peter, who had struggled with a learning disability throughout his schooling years. “That was in the '80's and they didn’t have the understanding for kids that they do now.” Peter says his saving grace in those early school years was his supportive parents. “I was always in remedial classes at school but mum and dad always believed in me. They always knew I was smart but I just didn’t fit into the school system. It’s because of them I developed the confidence I have,” said Peter. “It’s tough when you are failing at school and wondering what you are going to do in life.” In a serendipitous turn of events, Peter found himself working at Sportsgirl where he discovered a passion for

retail and marketing he didn’t know he had. “I was around 20 when I got a part time job at Sportsgirl. They wanted male shop assistants and I loved it. I loved the energy, the marketing and really enjoyed my three years there. It was through a chance job there that it became my wonderful career,” said Peter. “Now 30 years later we have 100 stores, and close to $200 million a year turnover.” One of the new Peter Alexander stores is in Sorrento. After opening in March 2016, Peter says the response has been fantastic. “I love the Mornington Peninsula and have ventured down to Sorrento a couple of times especially to get one of their famous vanilla slices. I thought because a lot of designer brands were there it would be a great place to set up another of our stores,” he said. “With our Sorrento manager Hannah I am very happy with the progress especially as it’s only been there for a short time.” Peter Alexander 85-99 Ocean Beach Road, Sorrento. What’s Hot For Your Home Pam from Saltwater gives her top trends for decorating your home Casual Lux

Indigo

Decorating your home

Is the strongest influence, but there’s so many styles and looks to choose from…

Is shaping up as the strong colour with pastels and floral patterns making a comeback.

Is about what works for you, and having a space that reflects you and your family.

Metallic

Linen

Coastal life

Is a strong trend, especially in bedding, but always a favourite in sofas and cushions.

Trends for a coastal lifestyle, whether a permanent home or beach house, are generally a more relaxed version of global trends.

Copper, brass and gold give warmth, especially when used in lighting…… but also looks fabulous in decorative objects or included on the dining table (as serveware) or the bathroom and kitchen (as tapware).

Add texture

Raw

To give some depth with knitted and knotted throws.

Elements like timber, marble and concrete always work.

Scandi Style

Practical fabrics

Is still big, with clean lines and neutral colours.

Linen and velvet are both luxurious fabrics and mixed with something metallic creates a feeling of casual luxury.

Start with a blank canvas

Gorgeous cushions

Organic and hand-made

Are an easy way to give a fresh look without too much expense.

Is always preferable to the massproduced and really personalises your home, adding warmth and style.

Peninsula’s Art Hub Nine art spaces exhibiting and selling art

Antipodes

Manyung Gallery

WITH 9 different art spaces (not including all the interior stores) that exhibit and sell a plethora of local, national and international artists and sculptors collections, if there is such a thing as an arts hub on the Peninsula, Sorrento is it!

with individual pieces submitted for their annual art prizes.

Most of Sorrento’s galleries have been servicing locals and visitors alike for many, many years, and will gladly offer advice to find you the perfect original piece for your home.

The Sorrento Museum (827 Melbourne Rd) is always worth a visit for a step back in time to enjoy Sorrento’s rich history which is full of interesting stories, on both land and sea, as Victoria’s first European settlement site.

Stores like Gallery Sorrento (141 & 148 Ocean Beach Rd) are institutions on the Mornington Peninsula, providing not only a fantastic collection of painted handcrafted pieces, but many wooden creations as well as beach inspired collections in a variety of materials. Gallery Vespa (Level 1, 26 Ocean Beach Rd) and Antipodes Bookshop Gallery (138 Ocean Beach Rd) are both strong supporters of local artists, often holding exhibitions to support a wide variety of art streams. Manyung Gallery (113a Ocean Beach Rd) is one of Victoria’s oldest contemporary art spaces. In addition to showcasing a large variety of paintings they also provide sculptural pieces to impress, and will gladly offer a free in-home trial and art consultation service. Of course, Marlene Miller (128 Ocean Beach Rd) has a large assortment of antique art if you’re looking for something a little more traditional or worldly, while the Continental Hotel (1-21 Ocean Beach Rd) holds 3 or more exhibitions a year in its restaurant gallery space downstairs, where the beautiful limestone walls are filled

Happy Days (155 Ocean Beach Rd) has a great collection of overseas seaside-inspired works and some fabulous outdoor pieces.

Sorrento also has an eclectic selection of unique interior and homewares stores, like Sandarne Homewares, Coastal Living, BigChair Living, Elephant, Saltwater, Bed Bath n’ Table, with newcomers to the scene including Windswept Designs, Red Fox Runs Vintage & Home and White Nest opening a second store in Sorrento to add to their Blairgowrie store. If you can’t find something in Sorrento to match your style or inspire you then you won’t find it anywhere! An interesting addition to Sorrento's "artscape" is Lumiere Art & Co, who hold specialised design sessions on weekends and regularly feature in interior magazines. They are housed upstairs at 20 Ocean Beach Rd in the beautiful historic oriental arcade building and are worth a weekend visit. Art can come is so many forms and is so subjective, but if you want choice in how to put your personal style into your home, then Sorrento is the place to come! Be inspired... Sorrento-Portsea Artists' Trail Walking along the Artists Trail from Sorrento to Portsea, it’s easy to imagine how the seaside could bring a quiet inspiration to the artists whose replicated works sit proudly on display. And what a way to display such works of art, in the very spot the artists stood to paint their masterpiece.

Funded by a grant from the Mornington Peninsula Shire, the trail was established in 2004 and continues to inspire artists and visitors alike with a proposal to add more art works in the future.

on the peninsula, this cliff top location is historically significant. Here, the Union Jack was first used to claim possession of Australia.

With 14 reproductions along the trail, visitors can see the views as they were captured by artists such as Sir Arthur Streeton, John Perceval and Albert Tucker.

Begin your art tour in Sorrento, where you'll see Albert Tucker’s aptly named “Sorrento”, painted in 1942. Walk along the foreshore from the front beach and then venture up to Point King where Millionaires Walk provides a wonderful outlook over the cliff tops between Point King Road and Lentell Avenue.

The trail is accessed by car and then by foot, with views across the beaches and bay towards the Bellarine Peninsula on one side, and the rugged coastline of Bass Strait on the other. Artists like Emanuel Phillips Fox and John Perceval capture this wild side of our peninsula in their artworks displayed near St. Paul's Beach and Diamond Bay.

Enjoy an easy, scenic coastal walk along the southern most part of the Mornington Peninsula on a trail that is the brainchild of a group of Sorrento residents who were inspired by the Fauvism Art Trail in Collioure, France.

On this most intriguing stretch of the Artists Trail are two paintings - a 1920 Arthur Streeton called “Point King” and an Arthur Boyd, painted 36 years later. While aesthetically beautiful and home to the most sought-after ocean view real estate

Immerse yourself into yet another dimension of our great Mornington Peninsula with a tour along the Sorrento Portsea Artists Trail and get a rare insight into how our unique region has inspired some of the world's most notable artists.

In 2004, the Mornington Peninsula Shire established Arts Nepean to encourage all forms of the arts at the southern end of the Mornington Peninsula. For many years the Peninsula has inspired the work of a number of famous artists, and one of the projects undertaken by Arts Nepean has been to establish the Sorrento - Portsea Artists Trail, which aims to bring the artists work to life by positioning images of the paintings as close as possible to the scene viewed by the artist. 1. Manyung Gallery

Art Icon CELEBRATING almost 50 years as an art icon, Manyung Gallery Group is one of Victoria’s oldest contemporary art businesses, operating in Sorrento, Mount Eliza, Mornington, Malvern and Asia. Manyung Gallery Sorrento is the arts focal point of the southern Peninsula. The Sorrento Manyung has two galleries each with a wide choice of contemporary and original Australian paintings and sculptures on exhibition. Upstairs at 119 Ocean Beach Road, Manyung is launching Manyung Gallery Grande where particularly large works, up to 3 metres will be on show.

AS you wander along the glamorous Sorrento shopping strip, you simply have to visit Marlene Miller Antiques, an Aladdin’s cave of unique and unexpected treasures. Marlene has owned antique shops since 1985, after earning her living as a law clerk in Melbourne, and longing for a sea change. “We used to come here for holidays all the time and one year decided to restore an old building in the main street. We pretty much didn’t leave after that, ran art stores and soon antique shops,” says Marlene. As soon as you walk into the shop, there is so much to see, with two storeys of antiques and bric-a-brac, from crystal, coach lamps and fine china to fur coats, hats, dining furniture, photographs and frames.

Go on a fishing charter or swim, dive or snorkel with the seahorses, reef fish and the dolphins. Take a 45min ferry ride across to Queenscliff for a day on the Bellarine Peninsula, Geelong, or Great Ocean Road. Portsea Village Resort is at 3765 Point Nepean Rd, Portsea.
