KEEPING IT LOCAL

Being a facilitator for our annual Baths of the Year Awards is a delight! Especially since St. Louis has more than our fair share of talented designers, and being selected to be a St. Louis Homes + Lifestyles judge brings another whole level of talent into the mix! It's super fun, so I've been told, and an honor to be asked. This year, accomplished interior designer Ellie Redders, distinguished architects William Cover and David Schaub and skilled kitchen designer David Reed accepted the formidable judging role. Their challenge? To decipher which bathrooms, amongst many gorgeous and functional ones submitted to the contest, are truly unique, provide inspiration and display fine-tuned finesse in the design. There is no getting around it, the judging is difficult. All the judges are practicing design professionals from the St. Louis area and they take this job choosing the winners very seriously (pages 18-29).

Walking past my own bathrooms this past week gave me pause. All three bathrooms, having been remodeled eight years ago, still looked pretty good but one in particular looked a little tired. Maybe some wallpaper with a little pizazz, new wall sconces and area rug will do the trick and freshen it up!

There are so many new bath ideas and inspiration from the experts in this issue that none of us should have a problem giving our bathrooms a little refresh, or for that matter, a major remodel. Maybe, just maybe, your next update will involve a major transformation to include a spa-like wet room (pages 68 and 69). Wouldn't that be just lovely?

Enjoy!

Prepared Plumbing

Aesthetics, function and budget are all important when selecting plumbing. Clients want their kitchens and baths to look a certain way, and some visit a showroom having done research. They may or may not know how pipe or valve sizes and calculations will affect their showers or budget, but they are important. For example, rain showers may look sleek, however most of the time, women with thick hair end up selecting a more full-bodied spray to completely rinse their locks, or they add a separate hand shower to do the trick. Homeowners can mix and match brands, price points and finishes to achieve all the above.

Fresh Start

When looking to make updates, there is no perfect time to switch out a fixture. Sometimes it’s aesthetics, and even the slightest refresh can be meaningful. New cabinet knobs, a faucet or lighted makeup mirror can alter your room and update your routine. Sometimes a therapy such as a “system” air/nanobubble tub can offer much

needed relief for sore muscles, aging skin or stress. Especially if someone has not renovated in a while, learning about modern offerings gives people education about how to best invest in their homes, lifestyles, and well-being.

Space Savers

When looking to utilize a small bathroom space, a wall-hung water closet and vanity with simple faucets might help create the feeling of more space. As would a small freestanding tub with an integral ledge for the faucet. Or possibly forgo the tub all together. A dimmable lighted mirror or medicine cabinet might be a nice touch as well.

Tech Talk

In terms of technology, we are seeing touchless (and hand-wave-activated) faucets in the kitchen. In the bath, we are seeing chromatherapy (the science of color) with shower heads that emit various colors that promote relaxation based on one’s preferences. Several of our vendors have adapted video technology into bathroom mirrors and steam shower vendors have brought this into the shower as well. Music and apps are seamlessly integrated into the bathroom.

Toiletry Trends

Mirrors with integrated, dimmable lighting continue to be extremely popular. Wellnessoriented therapies and products, such as steam showers, saunas and filtered water, for both health, relaxation and environmental concerns remain on-trend. Industrial details are still “in”, as is unlacquered brass, matte black and polished nickel finishes. We remain on the lookout for bronze tones to hit our market from the coasts but have not been inundated yet. Kitchen sink workstations at all price points remain in demand for both design and functionality.

Ask the Experts

Homeowners have so much information about renovations these days. From fixtures to finishes, people can get a head start about preferences before going to a showroom or hiring a designer, architect or contractor. Sometimes home improvement shows are not quite forthcoming when it comes to budgets and time frames, however, industry professionals can help fill in the gaps. When it comes to plumbing, parts and pieces must be compatible (your shower handle and the valve behind it must fit together) and health and environmental codes must be met. Faucet and sink holes must be compatible and knowing how a project is coordinated is important. Your industry professionals can include you in as much information as you would like to know to ensure an accurate and timely project. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

Lavender Fields FOREVER

A Wright City hobby farm growing lavender for fun has become a haven for bath and body products.

Tracy and Chad Smith, co-owners of Long Row Lavender Farm, make bath and body goodies for their love of flowers. “I wanted to create products people would be proud of having in their homes,” Tracy explains. “It’s true that lavender’s soothing smell offers plenty of aromatherapy benefits,” she says, “but I also wanted to make products that would be beautiful, like our flowers.”

Originally a hobby farm, what would become Long Row Lavendar Farm (a thriving flower farm, cafe and the host of maker’s markets three times a year) started out gradually. “We wanted a place where our kids could grow up with their hands in the dirt, growing things,” Tracy says. So, the couple bought the farm in 2007, when their four kids were still little, and they started planting vegetables. “But by harvest time, we discovered the deer and racoons had eaten everything,” laughs Tracy. “Which is why I started looking into plants the deer wouldn’t eat.” It was then that she had the great idea to grow lavender.

The lavender grew well and produced a beautiful harvest. “But then what do you do with so many flowers?” Tracy asks. After visiting other farms and thinking about what she could do with all the bountiful blooms, it dawned on her that she could create handmade, small batch bath and body goods. “It’s really a versatile herb, when you think about it,” she says.

A novice at first, Tracy taught herself how to make the best lavender bath and body items. She set about making items she likes and felt others would gravitate towards as well. She spent an entire winter perfecting her recipes for sugar scrubs, body butters and facial mists. “First, I started with a sugar scrub, learning how to make a high-quality product that could still be homemade and full of natural ingredients. I spent an entire winter investigating that.”

After mastering this, Tracy started making other lavender infused items. “I love our body butter,” she reveals, “I just love how my skin feels after using it.” There’s also the farm’s lip balm made with lavender and peppermint to create a pop of menthol, while plumping lips. “I use the cuticle bath too,” she says, “It’s great as a relief from gardening.” She uses the brand’s facial mist as a makeup primer and a splash of fragrance. “It can be very cooling and has such a great fragrance that I tend to use it as perfume. I use this daily.”

Altogether Long Row Lavendar Farm makes 15 different bath and body goodies, and for a long time, Tracy and Chad were selling them at the Lake St. Louis farmer's market. “But people started asking if they could visit the farm, and it was then that we started thinking about expanding.” In 2015, the family built the property’s barn and gift shop, and officially opened to the public in the spring of 2016. “By this time, with so many products, it was nice to be making them in the barn instead of in my kitchen, and then people could come and see us at the farm.” Four years later in 2019, they added the café, and the farm tours were in full swing.

Tracy still dreams about what else the farm could be doing and looks ahead to expanding their Christmas market and offerings. Every year, she says she tries to make it just a little bit bigger. “We might not have set out to do all this originally with the hobby farm,” she says. “But it has been really fun.”

Powder Rooms

Castle Design PLATINUM WINNER

Why the judges love it: The softness and cohesiveness of the space ties in perfectly with the intricate detailing in the cabinetry and wallpaper! This powder room maintains its aesthetic without being too overwhelming.

Castle Design transformed this 33-square-foot powder room into a tribute to nature and all its beauty. Playing off the homeowner’s outdoor koi pond, Phillip Jeffries’ Lilies wallcovering in Golden Pond adorns the walls and adds additional depth. Details like the THG Profile Lalique clear cross-handle faucet and Vitraform freestanding sink basin with delicate leaf motifs, work to bring the outdoors in. A polished nickel crystal light fixture completes the space and lights the entrance into this tranquil retreat.

PLATINUM WINNER Powder Rooms

Castle Design and MDG Renovations

Why the judges love it:

Careful planning and meaningful details allow the unique theme of this powder room to shine. From the juxtaposition between the floor and the fixtures, to the inventor-like feel of the design, this room allows multiple elements to work in perfect harmony.

The homeowner of this Central West End home is no stranger to hosting. Looking for the perfect powder room for guests who attend his extravagant outdoor pool parties, he turned to Castle Design to create a ‘seductive yet playful’ space. Working around the carriage house’s original footprint, the team created a new floor plan to maximize the space while maintaining important utility features. Glossy metals and fanciful patterns offer a sophisticated take on a nautical theme. Cole & Sons Fornasetti wallcovering features an underwater setting and ties into the fish scale-like mosaics on the powder room floor.

C&M Interiors

Why the judges love it: This is a bathroom that evokes feeling. The boldness of the ceiling wallpaper and the colorful detailing of the baby blue tub brings an unmistakable vibe to this creative, historic space.

C&M Interiors faced the important task of maintaining the historic feel of this second empire revival home’s bathroom renovation. Looking to create a playful and welcoming space for the homeowner’s son, the space is full of classic elements and whimsical charm. Covered in shades of blue and penny tile flooring, the bathroom’s creative ambience is accented by Schumacher horse-patterned wallpaper on the ceiling. Gold detailing in the vanity, light fixtures and tub add to the renovation’s historic charm. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

Karr Bick Kitchen + Bath GOLD WINNER

Why the judges love it:

This bathroom’s impressive transformation is incredibly well-thought-out. The balance between old and new allows the space to keep its historic feel while still adding new, modern comforts.

A breathtaking but non-functional bathroom was given a much needed makeover by Karr Bick Kitchen + Bath. Adjustments to the bathroom’s layout were key, removing the sink from in front of the toilet and adjusting the previous cave-like tiled shower. Natural stone countertops and a marble mosaic floor replace the older, decorative tile. A double vanity sits along the old shower wall and the wall-mounted faucets add additional “getting ready” storage. The new shower is now combined with the tub, and polished nickel fixtures throughout the room help relate back to the original historic feel. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

PLATINUM WINNER

103-110 square feet

Chelsea Design and Wise Bros. LLC

Why the judges love it:

The thrifted, wood center panels are a standout feature in this bathroom transformation! The designer was also incredibly clever with their use of functional swivel mirrors to solve the problem of the vanity sitting in front of a window.

This 1940s Clayton home received a major overhaul. The client was looking to place an en-suite bathroom, smaller walk-in closet and space for laundry into the room’s previous footprint. Chelsea Design and Wise Bros. LLC removed the old back staircase connecting the primary bedroom to the second floor to create space for the new bathroom. The new space had enough room for a narrow bathroom, large walk-in shower and water closet, a new primary closet and a laundry room with access to the main hall. Due to the layout of the space, the vanity could only be placed in front of a window. To combat this challenge, a trough sink, deep counter space and two custom mounted swivel mirrors were added for storage and convenience. A standout feature includes the tall linen cabinets that feature lattice panels thrifted by the client, then painted and fit within the new doors. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

Dana King Design Build Remodeling transformed this turn-of-the-century home’s bathroom in a dramatic remodel. Looking for a primary bathroom that accommodates both busy mornings and relaxing evenings, the designer chose to not remove any walls, opting instead to demo a closet and place a standing shower with a frameless glass enclosure in the previous space. High ceilings are accentuated with a mural wallpaper and gold, sculpted leaf chandelier. For storage, custom cabinets with screen doors are built-in around the radiator and the cabinets’ drawer bottoms include venting to create towel warming drawers. Strong black-and-white tones are present throughout the space and add artfulness and harmony in the primary bath. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

GOLD WINNER

103-110 square feet

Dana King Design Build Remodeling

Why the judges love it:

The ceiling wallpaper and statement light fixture immediately draw your eyes into the space. The layout of the shower and tub, as well as the use of color, create a stunning place to wind down at the end of the day.

PLATINUM WINNER

122-140 square feet

Karr Bick Kitchen + Bath

Why the judges love it:

This bathroom knows its aesthetic! The wainscoting, patterned wallpaper and black detailing work together to add a historic punch.

Addressing uneven floor heights, removing soffits and tackling the lack of a toilet room were some of the main starting points for this bathroom renovation. Transforming a dated floor plan, Karr Bick Kitchen + Bath sought to create a functional and timeless space. To infuse character into the home, wainscoting was added throughout the bathroom up to the ceiling. This provided a backdrop for the mirrors and sconces and blends nicely with the floral wallpaper pattern along the walls. A large shower, soaking tub and separate toilet room were added with the designers needing to remove a window and use a crane to get the bathtub up to the second floor bathroom. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

GOLD WINNER

122-140 square feet

Castle Design

Why the judges love it:

The metallic details throughout the space are a showstopping addition to this bathroom transformation.

This primary bathroom is the embodiment of luxury and grace. A custom De Gournay wallcovering featuring a moonlit garden design on metallic silk immediately draws viewers’ eyes into the room. The surrounding walls were custom painted to match the wallcovering and soft reflective materials, such as the Waterworks Candide freestanding oval tub, carry the space’s metallic theme. The Adele small sconce by Visual Comfort adds a soft, inviting glow to the space, and the Lola beveled mirror is embellished with quartz crystal points that reflect light throughout the room. Altogether, the space is the embodiment of indulgence and refinement. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

Hamtil Construction GOLD WINNER

Why the judges love it:

This major transformation is both architecturally inspired and impressive. The vanity wall is a bold, standout choice, and the stacked tile pattern is a great way to add interest.

This mid-century modern bathroom by Hamtil Construction is a truly remarkable transformation that met all of the client’s requirements. Through thoughtful planning, a private water closet, enlarged shower, soaking tub, double vanity and ample storage were added to the primary bath. The walk-in shower features a full-length shampoo ledge and bench seat with a combination of navy blue hexagon and black subway tiles throughout the shower walls and floor. A free-standing tub sits between two windows and serves as the focal point of the room. Every aspect of the space, from the matte black fixtures to the thickened quartz vanity countertop and custom roman shades, works to create a visually stunning design. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

WINNER

PLATINUM WINNER

165-245 square feet

Karr Bick Kitchen + Bath

Why the judges love it:

If there were three words to describe this bathroom, they would be: stylistic, modern and well-done. The minimalistic approach to the interior helps set a calming atmosphere, and the more intricate additions, such as the shower tile, work well with the bathroom’s other details.

This bathroom renovation turned an ordinary builder-grade bathroom into a bright, stylish and highly functional oasis. The client had very specific goals for the room: brightening the space, enhancing its functionality and aligning the design with their personal style. Through a thoughtful selection of materials and a keen eye for design, Karr Bick Kitchen + Bath brought this vision to life. Stunning blackand-white statement tiles in the shower set the tone for the space, and quarter-sawn white oak cabinetry incorporated natural and organic textures. Leathered quartz countertops and wainscoting in varying shades of white add further intrigue. Finally, a unique statement light fixture adds a striking impact and rounds out the comfortable, functional space. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

Chelsea Design and Wise Bros. LLC GOLD WINNER 165-245 square feet

Why the judges love it:

This bathroom is the perfect example of achieving a client’s goals. The space carries the feminine feeling the homeowner was looking for with its symmetry, hardware selection and the striking tub deck.

A recently single mother of two turned to Chelsea Design and Wise Bros. LLC to create her dream timeless and feminine primary bathroom. Removing two walls and creating a new french door entry, a long, narrow space was left behind. The client’s requested makeup area sits in the center of the room and is visible from the bedroom. The shower was able to expand in size and an air tub was added at the end of the room through careful planning. The vanity stool was built with hand-selected fabrics inside Chelsea Design’s in-house workroom and adds the perfect touch of color to the primary bath. Crystal lighting, extravagant plumbing fixtures, marble, brass and powder blue and rose accents carry the timelessfeel the homeowner was looking for. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

Urban Oasis

Sharing a passion for livable urban environments, a St. Louis couple team up with the founders of UIC to manifest a dream home made for nurturing daily life.

by UIC
The living room’s vintage TWA posters (circa 1959 and 1962) were a must for this Tower Grove East home that pays homage to St. Louis’s mid-century modern heritage.

pportunity literally knocked at the door for St. Louis couple Bradley Fratello and Doug Moore. While admiring their dwelling in The Grove from the street, a stranger walked up to their front door and offered to buy it for a generous price well above what they had spent building it. Quickly seizing the moment, they accepted the offer and moved into a condo in the Central West End.

After a couple of years, they still craved city life but preferred to have more land with a seamless indoor/outdoor connection. They found a large property on an eclectic block in Tower Grove East, which they divided into two lots. They built their current home on one lot, the site of a former stable that caught fire and burned down in 2012, and later sold the other.

“We hav e a long relationship with architect Sarah Gibson, co-founder of UIC, who designed our previous custom home in the Grove,” says Fratello. “We knew very quickly after meeting with Sarah and her husband, Brent Crittenden, architect and co-founder of UIC, that we had a similar eye toward contextually inspired modernist design. Doug and I both share UIC’s ‘less is more’ approach to clean

design and efficient use of space, and we also share a deep investment in reimaging St. Louis for the 21st century.”

Completed in 2018, their single-level, two-bedroom, two-bath home encompasses nearly 1,750 square feet. Still having ample lot width, UIC built the house tight to one side, leaving plenty of yard space on the other. “From the street, the home complies with a dense urban neighborhood,” says Gibson, design principal at UIC. “The front façade aligns with the historic homes on the block, with a front porch and formal landscaping that holds the street edge. However, crossing the threshold from the street into the house proper, the dwelling takes on mid-century principles with soaring rooflines, open concept spaces, vaulted ceilings and a seamless indoor/ outdoor connection in almost every room.”

The couple’s new home began as a riff on one of UIC’s standard models called the “Flounder,” named for their asymmetric, sloped façades and entries on the side. Dating back to the late 1700s, this architectural design style appeared in colonial cities throughout the Mississippi Valley. The UIC “Flounder” has a smaller footprint and two bedrooms toward the front of the house. Its living spaces open

Monochromatic glazed tile and wood textures complement the kitchen cabinetry while nodding to the 50s and 60s. The open floor plan visually connects the living room to the kitchen. A stylish pendant light delineates the dining space from the kitchen, and a suspended fireplace creates a sculptural work of art that receives top billing in the hierarchy of the room’s spatial features.

toward the back. Since the couple had a double lot, they widened the house and its side overhang, creating a covered patio. They shifted one of the bedrooms to the back of the home and situated the living spaces in the middle to open to the side, where they built a pool, a rock garden and a raised-bed vegetable garden.

“At first glance, our home appears t o be an homage to the low-sloped roofs of mid-century ranch homes more typically found in Crestwood and Sunset Hills,” notes Fratello, “and that reference is fully intentional. Combined with UIC’s ‘Flounder’ design, we hope to have paid a double homage to St. Louis’s architectural heritage.” The dwelling’s simplistic and light-filled design also delivers a wellgrounded aesthetic.

Outside, light gray Hardie board siding in three shades transitions from darkest to lightest as it ascends the façade. Inside, the color palette is a range of warm grays on the walls, wide-plank LVT flooring, and concrete. The open-concept living/dining space brings in a range of greens in an overdyed oriental rug, a forest green velvet sofa and a few accessories in the kitchen, including a Fiestaware teapot—a gift to the couple from friends who moved to Mexico. Deep earth tones anchor the living space with a pair of dark chocolate Barcelona chairs and a dark-stained Noguchi-inspired coffee table.

In the primary suite, texture essentially replaces color as the key interest, with a grass cloth focus wall, richly quilted duvet, and a group of monochrome throw pillows in a range of fabrics. A floating vanity designed and built by a friend gives the primary bath a spacious and weightless aesthetic. A cozy reading nook lends warmth with a vibrant mix of plush textiles and a pair of abstract prints by local artist Jeff Kapfer.

Homeowner Brad Fratello selected and installed custom pool tile using randomized gray, green, and blue glass baguettes. The pool patio by Decorative Concrete Surfacing displays a three-color treatment drawn from the hues in the exterior siding. Conceived as two outdoor rooms, the alfresco spaces are separated by a double row of Emerald Green Arborvitae, which continues around the far side of the pool. Behind the arborvitae, a raised-bed garden grows fresh vegetables and flowers.

“We knew from our first experience that Brad and Doug were creative and fun to work with,” says Gibson. “Expressing a desire to maintain an urban aesthetic yet push the boundaries architecturally, they turned to us to solve their ideal of creating a reasonably priced urban retreat through design. The interior design direction shared between us was more of an agreement around architectural principles than taste.”

Building and landscape worked together to create privacy, with the home as close as possible to one side of the lot and the adjacent house, leaving space for Brad’s garden, a pool and a hot tub. A screen element forms the front porch and extends around the perimeter of the yard, melding the house with the outdoor space architecturally. “The outside is designed with a purpose,” adds Moore. “It’s not a yard with a pool—it’s an outdoor room with a pool as the centerpiece. It’s a spa, an outdoor dining room, an entertainment space, a retreat from the noise of life and an urban oasis. We are thankful every day that we have created this special place.”

UIC shaped the spaces around the couple’s lifestyle and art collection with dynamic architectural features. A massive wall of sliding glass doors facing the pool became a central element. The ‘disappearing’ wall and a suspended fireplace create the heart of the indoor and outdoor living spaces. “Together, they generate a visual axis of water, fire, and light that create an indoor/outdoor connection,” says Fratello. “Further linking inside and outside is the kitchen backsplash—a horizontally-laid Moroccan hourglass tile in a muted earth tone with

an undulating, crackled surface evoking the water in the pool just a few feet away. In the evening, ripples on the surface of the pool reflect on the living room ceiling, a soft motion that activates the geometry of the space.”

The design of this projec t primarily focuses on great flow and functionality. Due to the limited square footage, every inch of the home and the yard was crucial. “There is very little circulation space,” notes Gibson, “and what little there is does double duty as the foyer, storage or mudroom. Similarly, the outdoor spaces are programmed with careful detail.” The front yard flourishes with native perennials, lending a Midwestern prairie garden vibe. The small exterior also encompasses the pool, a patio, a garden with a processing area and a carport.

“For me, I get to reap the benefits of trusting Brad’s vision and Sarah’s ability to turn that into a reality,” Moore notes. “We wanted a home that integrates the outdoors as much as possible and having the pool positioned for view and access from both the living room and the primary bedroom masterfully achieves that.”

“In the summer, we love sitting outside after dark and looking at our slice of the sky framed by the long parallel lines of our home’s patio overhang and our neighbor’s equally modernist home,” adds Fratello. “Floating in the pool while the clouds track by is magical.” See stlouishomesmag.com for resources and additional photos.

A main-level bar area was a priority for the homeowners, who frequently entertain. “This area is part of a series of vignettes people can choose to be a part of at a gathering,” says architect Jeff Day. The black cabinetry contrasts with the airy white and natural wood featured in the adjacent kitchen. “The black definitely makes the space more interesting,” says designer Debbie Donnelly.

Creating a Legacy

Talented design team shapes homeowners’ vision to create an elegant estate exuding love and warmth.

The owners of this home were drawn to Ladue’s location —more convenient to the airport and downtown than the couple’s previous home in Chesterfield. As they imagined their dream home, the couple already knew who’d be part of the team creating it. Award-winning builder Mike Mahn is a family member, and interior designer Debbie Donnelly had worked on remodeling the couple’s Chesterfield home. Now the owners needed to find the perfect lot where they would build.

“Once we decided to move closer in, I just started driving around this area, and I saw a house for sale,” says the wife. The home’s wide lot backed up to a golf course, providing an idyllic setting. The lot’s existing home was taken down, and the couple began working with the team to design a bright, airy home ideal for entertaining friends and family, which includes three young adult children.

The founder of Mahn Custom Homes & Renovations, Mike says the couple wanted a home with open spaces that would maximize entertaining and allow good flow throughout the home. “They didn’t want it to feel cavernous, however,” says Mike. “They wanted a beautiful, welcoming space where every inch of it would be used, whether entertaining or in their daily lives.”

Oversized windows (and lots of them) let natural light pour into the two-story entry and great room. “I love natural light in a stairwell,” says architect Jeff Day. “In this case, the large windows bring natural light into the loft area above, the foyer area and the great room.” The wood cocktail table by Four Hands is oversized and properly scaled for the large space.

An arched brick wall adds visual interest and creates a sense of separation from the casual dining space (white chairs at left) and a bar (not seen) on the right. Natural wood used for the cabinetry at far right and as trim on the vent hood adds texture and warms the clean, modern white kitchen.

Custom upholstery by Massoud in a calming color scheme anchors the great room, where oversize doors glide open to enhance indoor/ outdoor entertaining.

“We knew we wanted darker walls here because all the other walls are so light,” says designer Debbie Donnelly. Benjamin Moore’s Kendall Charcoal adds the heft Debbie sought for the space, which also features a coffered ceiling and linear light fixture in antiqued gold. The table, chairs and collection of mirrors were brought from the owners’ previous home.

Mike introduced the owners to architect Jeff Day, principal of Jeff Day & Associates, who worked with the couple to design a home with a main-level primary suite; a large, open space for gathering, dining and entertaining; and an outdoor entertaining space accessible from the main level. “We wanted to walk directly out to the back yard pool, which this lot gave us,” says the wife. “Our previous house in Chesterfield had a deck so you had to walk down the steps to the backyard.”

The combination of stone, br ick and siding on the exterior is sophisticated and elegant, yet traditional elements such as the front porch swing and gas lanterns add a homey welcome. “It’s a contemporary take on the traditional styling of a European country home,” Jeff says. Yet, “it’s not pretentious, just the perfect combination of lightness and texture,” says Debbie, owner of Donnelly Interiors and Donnelly Décor, a retail space featuring furniture and home furnishings.

An oversized window facing the street frames a floating staircase inside the home. “I love natural light in a stairwell, and if done right, a stairwell can be a work of art,” says Jeff. “In addition, from the outside you get a glimpse of what’s to come inside the home. In this case, there’s a two-story volume of space interrupted only by the stairwell, and the large window brings natural light into the upstairs loft, into the foyer area and along a corridor that runs through the middle of the main floor.”

Upholstered headboard and siderails add extra softness in the primary bedroom, where walls are swathed in Sherwin-Williams “Passive” light gray hues.

Above: “The texture and combination of this Phillip Jeffries wallpaper is magnificent,” says designer Debbie Donnelly. The “Make Waves” pattern is handcrafted from abaca pulp strings and finished with a hint of gold metallic. The custom console sink was fabricated for the space based on a design the homeowner admired.

The main level hallway’s barrel vault ceiling is among the wife’s favorite elements in the home. “I love turning on the uplights and drawing attention to it,” she says. Hardwood flooring in lighter yet varying tones carries through the home, unifying the spaces.

Opposite page: Debbie Donnelly designed the panel window treatments for the breakfast area, where a beaded light fixture adds texture to the elegantly casual space. This page: The home’s lower level features a hangout area with large-screen TV (a favorite of the husband) and this wine tasting area. “It’s a mix of glitzy and casual at the same time,” says designer Debbie Donnelly. The table, custom crafted from a wooden wine cask, features the homeowners’ names and adds a rustic touch, while the gold cocktail table and peacock blue chairs bring sophistication and color.

That corridor is just one space in the home receiving specific attention to the ceiling. Debbie worked with Mike and an interior designer on the Mahn Custom Home team in designing architectural ceiling details throughout the home. In the long hallway on the main floor, a barrel vault ceiling is one of the wife’s favorite elements in the home. “It’s just something different you don’t see very often, and I love turning on the uplights and drawing attention to it,” the wife says.

The dining room features a coffered ceiling, and the primary bedroom’s steeply pitched beams add architectural interest to the simple serenity of the space. “Most of the time ceilings are forgotten,” says Debbie. “A ceiling treatment sets the tone and takes a room from ordinary to special.”

Walls also received special attention in intentional areas. On the main floor, a brick arch visually separates the living and dining areas from the kitchen. “Sitting in the great room and looking into the kitchen with the brick defining that view is just so inviting,” says Debbie. The wife says the brick wall is another favorite element in the home. And a powder room wows thanks to a Phillip Jeffries wallpaper.

A bar area opposite the casual eating space also provides a sense

of separation in the vast main living and dining space. “We wanted a bar/beverage center on the main level,” says the wife. Featuring a coffee maker, ice maker, wine cooler and refridgerator drawers, this space further serves as a transition between kitchen and great room. Debbie suggested black cabinets for the bar area to contrast with the kitchen’s airy white and light natural wood cabinetry. “The black warms the space and definitely makes it more interesting,” says Debbie.

Outdoors, an impressive pool house “accompanies the house as opposed to being just another structure sitting out in the back yard that may or may not complement the house,” says Mike. The pool house’s list of attributes includes a kitchenette, a separate bedroom and a full bath, in addition to the large open space for gathering and dining. “It’s just a great space to go and relax and not interrupt anyone in the main house,” says Mike.

In reflecting on the couple’s vision, Jeff calls the home “a legacy home” —a place where young adult children and eventual grandchildren will want to visit. “It’s the central spot where everybody would want to be,” says Jeff. And it’s plenty large—around 9,000 square feet of finished space. “It feels elegant, even with its sheer mass,” says Jeff.

The pool house’s attributes include an expansive dining and gathering area.

Mike agrees. “It’s grand, but it’s just so warm and inviting. It’s a home they can truly hand down to the next generation and their family can enjoy absolutely wonderful memories, not only because it’s set up for entertaining, but it’s so filled with love.”

As a family member, Mike has been a part of those memory-making occasions, whether a family gathering or a large fundraising event for a charitable endeavor. “It’s fun to sit back and watch people come in, and their jaws drop while they are just trying to take it all in,” says Mike. “It’s just really fun to see what you’ve provided for a family and the memories they will keep from having these events in their home.”

The back yard provides abundant space for relaxing, entertaining or just enjoying the tranquility of the expanse of green lawn and the adjacent golf course. The impressive pool house “accompanies the house as opposed to being just another structure sitting out in the back yard that may or may not complement the house,” says builder Mike Mahn.

The pool house’s well-appointed amenities include a bedroom (at left), a full bath and a kitchenette (bottom) featuring a backsplash wall of Rockmount stacked stone.

Cultivating Knowledge

Through creativity and a willingness to learn, this home gardener transformed his garden into a relaxing escape.

hen Fred Ortlip worked nights as a copy editor for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, he used his daytime hours for a round or two of golf each week with his Post colleagues. As he watched his ball sail down the fairway or eyeballed the correct line of a putt, he also focused on something having nothing to do with the sport. “I admired a lot of the landscaping around the golf courses,” he recalls. In the late 1990s, when he and his wife Rory had some money left over from an insurance check to repair hail damage to their Kirkwood home, they decided to use it to enhance their own landscape. “Everyone likes to look at nice landscaping,” he reasoned. “I wondered, ‘What kind of potential do we have here?’”

Living just a few blocks from Sugar Creek Gardens nursery center, he decided to take advantage of their free design consultation service to enhance a shady front walk where the couple, who moved into their home in 1979, had always had trouble growing grass. “I asked them to create a plan.” The result was a combination of vigorous, purple-flowering cranesbill, hardy geranium and dainty,

triangle-leaved epimedium, also known as bishop’s hat or barrenwort. Both plants are low maintenance, have a mounding habit and interesting foliage that offers fall color. So successful was that combination, it still lines the front walk more than 25 years later, even though there is now more sun along the walkway.

“What they put in looked r eally nice,” Fred says. Seeing that transformation fueled his interest in landscaping, plus a switch to the day shift at the Post cut back on his golf outings. “The golf was not cheap,” he says with a laugh. “I decided I could put that money into gardening and have a little more success than I did on the golf course.”

In addition, with his two sons now grown and weekends freed up from kids’ activities, “I was at a jumping off point to find a hobby that was really enjoyable,” he adds. Where his yard was concerned, “I didn’t have a grand plan,” Fred continues. “I don’t think most people have a grand plan. You do it piecemeal. I went from the front sidewalk to the back yard and the area around the screened porch.

I just kept nibbling away.” A gardening “aha” moment came when he planted underneath a sweetgum tree, a group of hostas a neighbor had given him. Because grass wouldn’t grow in the tree’s heavy shade, Fred and his wife had covered the bare ground with mulch each spring for the past 20 years. He witnessed how the hostas flourished in the naturally amended soil.

The more he gardened, the more he wanted to know. He read books and articles on gardening “but I really struggled to get stuff to grow and look right. You buy one perennial and you put it in the ground and then you buy another perennial and you put it in the ground but then you have this mishmash of perennials that don’t look very good.”

In 2008, Fred decided to become even more serious about his hobby by taking the Master Gardener course offered by the University of Missouri Extension Service through the Missouri Botanical Garden. When he completed the course, he went to his friends at Sugar Creek, where he bought his plants, and asked for a part-time job on weekends. “I was still working at the Post and sometimes doing shifts both Saturday and Sunday at Sugar Creek and volunteering on Sunday mornings at the Missouri Botanical Garden." By 2010, he had amassed enough knowledge to do gardening consultations for Sugar Creek, helping other gardeners in the same way he had been helped in the late 1990s. “Looking back, I don’t know how I did all that,” he says with a laugh.

Fred retired from the Post-Dispatch in 2015 but not from gardening. He took on more hours at Sugar Cr eek and devoted additional time to his own yard. Throughout the years, his landscaping “nibbles” have skillfully transformed his yard into a bountiful banquet of beautiful plants.

Tiny ‘Anna’s Magic Ball’ arborvitae, ‘Candy Corn’ spirea and variety of soft grasses now augment the original cranesbill and epimedium along the front walk. The colorful leaves of heuchera or coral bells and feathery stems of blue star amsonia add accents to a front border anchored with hydrangeas, boxwoods, crepe myrtle and feather reed grass. Bronze-leaved begonias with bright red-orange flowers provide continual pops of color and tie the beds together.

Around the back, Fred created beds circling the perimeter of the yard and flagstone pathways to get from one area to another. Under the sweetgum tree, boxwoods, hydrangeas, variegated Solomon’s seal and chartreuse-leaved ‘Sun King’ aralia have joined the original hostas.

Poppies, purple -leaved sedum, hydrangeas and grasses now surround the screened porch. As he planted and tended his landscaping feast, Fred used his own yard as a test kitchen for a wide variety of shrubs, perennials and annuals. Plants that worked well for him, he felt good about recommending to clients when he went out on consultations.

Through the years, he has developed some favorites that are reliable and can enhance many different landscapes like Allium ‘Millenium.’ Even though the folks who named this cultivar misspelled millennium, which offends Fred’s sensibilities as a copy editor, he considers the plant itself a winner. Standing between 15-20 inches tall, it produces fragrant, ball-like purple flowers on strong stems from mid through late summer and after that, attractive seed heads remain. It grows in full sun to part shade and can tolerate a wide variety of soils.

Spirea ‘Candy Corn’ candy-apple red foliage emerges in spring, turning to bright yellow as the season progresses. New growth tips the branches with bright, red-orange leaves (hence the name), and if that weren’t enough, the plant produces magenta flowers over a long season. The compact size of between 18-24 inches tall and 30 inches wide makes it a nice option in place of annuals where gardeners want season-long color.

Hubricht’s Bluestar Amsonia, a standout for its feathery, thread-like foliage that sways in the slightest breeze, produces pale-blue, star-shaped blossoms in spring and turns vibrant yellow in fall. Growing 2-3 feet tall, it can be cut back about 6 inches after flowering if a homeowner wants a more mounded shape. It will thrive in sun to part shade and tolerate moist conditions. Amsonia ‘String Theory’ is a new cultivar that tops out at 22 inches and works well in smaller spaces.

Oakleaf Hydrangea, tried and true, are easy to grow in sun to part shade and produce showy white blossoms in early summer that last for weeks before fading to pink and then brown. In fall, the foliage transforms to burgundy red, and the peeling bark of the mature stems makes the shrub attractive even in winter. A wide variety of cultivars ensures the shrub is available in multiple shapes and sizes.

Turtlehead, named for the shape of the hooded, snapdragon-like flowers which resemble a turtle’s head, is a favorite of Fred's for its long bloom season from “August to frost” and the ability to “just fill up a space” in the garden. The blossoms can be pink, rose or white and the plant will grow 2-3 feet tall in both sun and shade. The height can be controlled by pinching stem ends back in spring. Although native to swampy areas, turtlehead can tolerate brief dry spells.

Fred’s knowledge of a wide variety of plants and how to use them in the landscape makes gardening almost a second career. What has immersed him so heavily in this new avocation? “I’ve always had this need to be creative,” he explains. “I’m a journalist so I can write, and I’ve always been interested in design. Gardening opens up another door to being creative. It is not always easy. You make mistakes. Plants don’t always do what you want them to. The digging and the planting is hard work, but there is enjoyment in creating something that looks really nice.” See stlouishomesmag.com for resources and additional photos.

LEAFY GREENS

Big leaves, colorful variations and unique flowers are all examples of what sets hostas apart from your typical foliage plant.

Symbolizing love and devotion, hostas are shade-tolerant foliage plants that thrive from early spring to late summer. They’re a great addition to perennial gardens, woodland gardens, areas needing ground cover, suburban yards or even outdoor containers.

Love and Care

Hostas love mild temperatures and grow best in partial shade. When planting a hosta, the crown of the plant (where the root meets the stem) should sit 1-inch below the soil line. These plants do great in rich, well-drained soil and thrive when exposed to constant moisture. These plants are also

especially convenient because they require minimal to no pruning and don’t require fertilizer. Something to look out for when caring for hostas is how they attract rabbits and deer. These animals love to eat hostas. To prevent this from happening, be sure to plant them in safe, deer-free zones.

Heat Wave

One of the biggest difficulties when growing hostas is dealing with intense summer heat waves. There are a few ways you can keep your hostas out of the full sun and the summer heat. If the hostas are small enough or in easy-to-move containers, you can move the plants into a cooler, shadier area

during heatwaves. If they are planted in the ground or too large to move, shade netting and umbrellas are two solutions to beating the heat. Keeping your plants hydrated is also incredibly important. Making sure they keep a deep watering helps promote the plant’s root moisture and makes them more durable in warmer temperatures. If any leaves get burnt or damaged in the sun, it’s best to cut and remove them to allow for more growth. Finally, mulching the area the hostas are planted in can also help in hot weather. Organic materials, like wood chips, will work to stabilize the soil temperature and promote air flow.

KEEP YOUR HOSTAS COOL FROM THE HEAT! Tips from Hostas on the Bluff.

1. Plenty of water! Hostas are very tough plants, but keeping them extra watered this time of year will help keep them looking good.

2. While hostas need some sun to grow, to keep them looking nice all summer, plant in a place that protects them from the intense summer sun.

3. If you are wanting to plant a hosta that gets a little more sun, choose a variety that is sun tolerant, such as Grand Tiara or June.

4. You can always plant hostas with another plant that will help provide shade, such as a hydrangea bush.

5. Don’t be afraid to pull off the worst of the leaves. It will help to give them a fresher look.

HOT HOSTAS

These hostas will take your garden to the next level.

Emma Rose: This eye-catching hosta is a one-of-a-kind find at Hostas on the Bluff in Fairview Heights. Named Emma Rose, after the owner's daughter, this plant features giant bright, wide yellow-green leaves that add shape and color to your shade garden.

‘Deja Blu’ Hosta: This blue-green leafed plant grows to be around 14-inches tall and 20-inches wide. The gold edge around the colorful center adds a playful touch to the low-maintenance plant.

‘Blue Angel’ Hosta: This hosta packs a powerful punch with large blue leaves that cascade out from the center of the plant. Growing to be around 32-inches tall and 70-inches wide, ‘Blue Angel’ Hostas are also notable for their bellshaped white flowers that grow from the top of the plant.

‘Sagae’ Hosta: Similar to the ‘Deja Blu’ hosta, the ‘Sagae’ variety have bluegreen leaves surrounded by a gold edge. Something that makes this variety stand out is its height. Growing to be 20-inches tall and 54-inches wide, ‘Sagae’ hostas are a great centerpiece for your shade garden.

“Hostas are great because anyone from the experienced gardener to an absolute beginner can have them in the garden. They are hardy and low maintenance and grow best in shady areas with a couple hours of morning sun. Add in some bonus watering when it's extra hot and you are all set. You can find hostas from a miniature size to a giant size in gorgeous yellows, blues, greens or a combination of those. We just cannot recommend them enough!” Erica Kniffin, owner of Hostas on the Bluff.

Japanese Festival

This Labor Day weekend, the Missouri Botanical Garden will be hosting its annual Japanese Festival, a three-day celebration highlighting the culture and history of Japan.

Photography courtesy of Missouri Botanical Garden

For more than 40 years, the Missouri Botanical Garden has produced this annual festival in conjunction with the Japanese Activities Committee, a coalition of several Japanese-American organizations that provide art, dance, food and entertainment for thousands of visitors each year.

This year, the Garden will welcome Kanariya Eiraku, an expert in the Japanese art of lone storytelling known as rakugo. Seated alone and with minimal props, Eiraku will show the audience how to weave masterfully comedic tales with multiple characters using only simple movements and voice changes.

The Garden is also par tnering with USA Sumo to welcome back the sumo wrestlers who have been a festival favorite for many years. Sumo is a form of full-contact wrestling and Japan’s national sport, originating as

religious performances to the Shinto gods in ancient times. These professional sumo wrestlers will give live demonstrations and often invite spectators onto the mat to try some of the moves for themselves.

When: Labor Day weekend, August 31 through September 1, 9 a.m. –9 p.m. and September 2, 9 a.m. –5 p.m.

Where: The festival takes place across the Missouri Botanical Garden grounds, with performances at the Bayer Event Center and Farr Auditorium inside the Jack C. Tayor Visitor Center, the Cohen Amphitheater, and throughout the Garden all weekend long.

What’s in bloom?

When you’re visiting the Garden, don’t miss out on the August blooms! Roses, lavender, asters, coneflowers and water lilies are some of the "can’t miss" flowers blooming this month.

An Artful Aesthetic

by Megan Lorenz

Renovation and design by Hamtil Construction

During the remodeling of Suzanne and Bryan Jurich’s home interior, their living space metamorphosed into a timeless, classic milieu. Yet, more importantly, Suzanne proclaims, “the house also finally became OUR home.”

Making a house a home took on increased importance in this case, given that Bryan’s executive career has prompted the family to relocate often. Suzanne says this is the first house they felt they would be able to settle into for a while. “Every other place we’ve lived felt temporary,” she recalls.

Suzanne states they had hoped to achieve a clean, crisp aesthetic through the renovations handled by Hamtil Construction. The makeover projects, which included the kitchen, living, dining, sunroom and primary bedroom plus baths, actually started about six years ago with creating a bar in the lower level of this Chesterfield house.

“We did the kitchen in 2022, and three bathrooms were finished at the end of 2023. We really wanted a home with a neutral, but warm backdrop so we could decorate with bright, modern art. Hamtil was great about bringing my inspiration photos to life,” she explains.

While the remodeling design and results were straightforward, Kerry Staley, NCIDQ, Hamtil Construction lead interior designer, says there also was an exceptional layer of refinement. She says the mostly neutral background with the Jurichs’ home allows art, shapes and forms to speak for themselves, as if in a gallery setting.

Photography
A remodeled home exudes timeless touches with a trusted approach.
The wood flooring throughout the home was manufactured by Chelsea Plank Flooring and sourced from Boardwalk Hardwood Floors.

“We achieved a warm and inviting aesthetic in this home that allows quality materials and textures to take the forefront,” Kerry outlines. “The design was just classic enough to stand the test of time but contemporary enough to feel of the moment.”

Kerry states that Suzanne's incredible eye for modern art adds the right amount of playfulness pointing to this young and vibrant family's unique style.

Along with the renovations leaving the home with versatile appeal, Suzanne says the updates certainly improved their lives by making the kitchen super functional as the space within which the family with two active sons spends a large bulk of time. “We’re blessed and lucky to have clients such as the Jurichs. To maintain a long-term relationship like needed in their remodeling initiatives takes a high level of trust and belief that we can guide them through the entire project development process, ” affirms Paul Hamtil, co-owner of Hamtil Construction.

Based on collaborative relationships with clients who often are professionals leading extremely busy lifestyles, Paul says their approach is to consistently provide turnkey client experiences, smooth executions and valued results. “We promise to deliver and we do, even in the details. Our clients trust and believe us when we tell them, ‘We got this.’ People love working with our team, too, and tell us they also enjoy their interactions with our extended trade partners,” says Paul. Likewise, Paul says his crew thoroughly enjoyed working with the Jurichs. “Suzanne even provided our team with snack baskets.”

SPLASH ZONE

Wet rooms continue to remain popular with homeowners looking to streamline their primary bath design. A freestanding tub sits within the tiled shower area making one open space for bathing. Homeowners love wet rooms for their ease of cleaning and the accessibility for all phases of life as the shower area often has a curbless or low curb entry.

By TKS Design Group. This Chicago wet room features white and gray marble, charcoal blue cabinetry and gold accents keeping with the vintage vibe in the rest of the home. To create this modified wet room, TKS Design Group started by eliminating the shower curb, which enlarged the footprint of the shower all the way to the edge of the bathtub. Then the shower was pitched toward a linear drain, so the water stays in the shower while a glass divider allows light from the window to expand into the room. Lastly, the designer added a freestanding tub to complete the spa-like feel. Photography by Michael Alan Kaskel.

The designer created a bathroom oasis complete with a custom designed and fabricated floating zinc-topped vanity and a wet room with a rain shower head and freestanding soaking tub. Along the back wall of the shower area, the designer added a recessed LED light into the ceiling in order to make it seem like a skylight was letting light stream in. This saturated the walls with light, which highlighted the finishes in the room, the amazing soaking tub and created another layer of ambience. Photography by Seth Caplan.

The clients made a strong effort to simplify the color palette because the views from the house are so spectacular.  Fireclay Picket Braid tiles in the wet room were one of the few opportunities to bring gentle color to the living experience. To keep color use strategic, the rest of the wet room walls are Dekton. The cream-color Terrazzo was a perfect flooring material choice as it flows throughout the rest of the house and seamlessly into the wet room. A simple glass partition protects the blu Bathworks vanity from splashes.

The client’s small and outdated primary bath was transformed into an expansive retreat. By borrowing space from the largely unused hall bath, the designer was able to create a wet room for the client that creates a true spa-like experience. To add some interest and depth the designer did a patterned accent wall in the shower and balanced the black and white with warm wood tones. Photography by Meagan Larsen.

By Marrokal Design & Remodeling. The 1950s home had a small, narrow bedroom with a bathroom. It did not accommodate the client's need for space or storage. An adjoining bedroom was seldom used, so absorbing this room for the benefit of the primary was ideal. Utilizing the added square footage from the spare bedroom, Marrokal Design & Remodeling created three design options for the primary bedroom, including a larger closet, more spacious bed placement and a larger bathroom. To make the most of the panoramic view, the client decided on an open bathroom layout where the shower and tub occupy the same space inside a wet room. Photography by Milan Kovacevic.

Just What the Doctor Ordered

Medicine cabinets are design staples that add functionality and style to bathrooms new and old.

CLASSIC

Medicine cabinets are a timeless bathroom staple for good reason. They offer more than just practicality; they bring a touch of classic charm to any space. Not only do they seamlessly blend storage into small areas, but their mirrored doors also discreetly conceal clutter while providing a useful reflective surface. This dual functionality makes them essential space-savers that don't compromise on usefulness. Their enduring popularity is a testament to their ability to combine practical storage with a hint of everlasting style.

Savannah Sells, Youtopia Designs

Medicine cabinets are the best example of form and function and are here to stay. All of the clutter from a countertop can be neatly tucked out of sight and the cabinet easily becomes the most accessed space in a bathroom. They offer an incredible amount of versatility with the latest designs. Medicine cabinets are available with a decorative frame to enhance the design of the bathroom or come frameless to blend in. They also can include lit panels, outlets inside and ample and convenient storage.

Karen Korn, Karen Korn Interiors

Medicine cabinets have come a long way from when I was a kid for sure! Now you can plug in an electric toothbrush, they have a

Seamless triple medicine cabinet available at West Elm.

magnifier and some are magically lit with just a touch. They are a more contemporary look and for those who prefer function over form, I think they will always be around.

Marci Marsh, M Marsh Interiors

Bathroom medicine cabinets are definitely a classic. These much disparaged cabinets have evolved over the years; they are no longer just small awkward metal boxes. Today there is truly something for everyone with all the styles and functionality they provide. Exterior and interior lighting, internal magnifying mirrors, outlets and, of course, shelving help to keep all of the everyday necessities within easy reach. I would say that this workhorse is a classic.

Janice Bohn, Anne Marie Design Studio

Medicine cabinets serve a practical purpose. They have been around for decades and seem to wax and wane in popularity, however they are a great option to combat counter clutter and keep necessary medications and toiletries contained. There are recessed options for a seamless look as well as wall-hung options. Necessity is the mother of invention and medicine cabinets are here to stay.
