HELLO

Bath time!

River LOVES taking a bath and dreams of someday having his own special bathing area. Photography by Colin Miller/Strauss Peyton.

Those two words can quickly muster a mixed bag of emotions for children and pets alike. Both 2-legged and 4-legged creatures either LOVE, TOLERATE or RUN when they realize bath time is near. For the runners, the sound of the water rushing through the pipes and filling the tub is enough to put them in panic mode. Boys, for the most part, tolerate a shower as something they have to do. But girls, we love taking a bath or indulging in a spa-like experience. Imagine slipping away to your own personal luxurious bath retreat where square footage doesn’t matter. It’s your special place to unwind from a hectic day at the workplace or managing a home filled with children. Our award-winning 2019 Baths of the Year (24 – 31) range in square footage from powder rooms to expansive master suites. One thing they all have in common is that they all exhibit meaningful and practical space for eight lucky St. Louis homeowners. If you are looking to update your current bath space look no further. These cozy, serene and tranquil bathrooms, all brimming with style, elegance and sophistication, boast many features that you may want to incorporate into your own bath space. There is so much inspiration just waiting for you to try! Our Annual Source Book (71 – 86) is included in this issue. It will help guide you in finding the best craftsmen and design teams in STL!

PS…Tag @stlhomesmag on Instagram or Facebook and we will feature your pup loving, tolerating or despising bath time!

THE INSIDER

Remaking HISTORY With years of expertise and experience, Ladd Suydam of Ladd Suydam Contracting knows how to keep your historic remodel true to its past and make it fit your future. Edited by Moe Godat Photography by Colin Miller/Strauss Peyton

Q

A

SLHL: How did you get started? Ladd: I started working with my parents doing projects around the house. Though neither of them was trained in construction, this time was very beneficial for me to see that with effort, creativity, passion and patience a lot can be accomplished. Added to that, a mistake isn’t always a failure. Being willing to extend yourself and take time to learn from your mistakes has been a valuable lesson I’m still working on today. During my college years, I worked framing houses in some of the new subdivisions going up. After college, I traveled internationally and worked during the duration. I was involved in some demolition crews as well as in some remote and environmentally protected areas in the Daintree rainforest in Australia. When my traveling had come to an end, I began working for a furniture company that designed and sold custom furniture as well as antiques. This allowed me to build on my experience by working with clients toward a goal. I later took time to go into custom cabinet-making which honed more fine carpentry skills. SLHL: How long have you been in business? Ladd: We started our own general contracting business in 2009 right at the downturn of the economy. Sometimes the timing of a dream isn’t always the best, but it can certainly work out! Before our company, and excluding building retaining walls, decks and framing basements for my parents as a young adult, I had been working in the trades and learning various skills since 1998.

16

AUGUST 2019 STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM

SLHL: Do you have a specialty or expertise? Ladd: Our specialty is working on historic houses. They allow us to explore our passions for architectural details and history while considering the reality of design and budget. I enjoy developing a process in which customers are more involved and have a voice throughout the project. We can work toward creating if not a replica, at least a space that pays homage to the period and feel of the house. We’re traditionalists at heart with an open mind to today’s styles and living needs. SLHL: What has been your favorite project lately? Ladd: A favorite project recently was a modern addition added to an early 1900s Spanish-style house in the Central West End. It took the better part of a year from planning to almost complete with the jobsite. We had wonderful homeowners and built a new relationship with an architect firm that we have enjoyed working with. This was a project that pushed us in logistics, organization and our internal processes. We really learned to lean on each other within our company as a unit and did well, all while providing a quality product that the homeowners have been thrilled with.

SLHL: What has been your most challenging project? Ladd: Our most challenging project has also been our favorite. Again, this remodel and addition took us out of our box of recreating existing moldings and architectural details. Where we would normally mimic each detail, we now had to bring together two different styles that would work together. The difficulties and complexities on this project were both from a budget and a technical standpoint. We enjoyed the challenge of working with the homeowner and architect to find a connection between design goals and budget goals. SLHL: Do you use any technology to make your job simpler or more accurate? Ladd: Yes. We use software that provides the homeowner access to all the job information via computer, tablet or smartphone. This shows them all the proposed costs of the project, the anticipated project schedule and organizes all change orders to allow them to see the current construction costs. We strive to use technology in applications with not only our homeowners but our subcontractors and regularly seek new opportunities to integrate and streamline viable technologies into our construction administration and project management. Moreover, to aid in design development, we rely on virtual technologies. As much as we enjoy modern technology, our in-house team is crucial for our company to be what it is and to grow. Technology is nothing without people who are willing to grow, learn and evolve. But as with anything from a hammer to a computer, if the tool isn’t used properly it only causes problems.

SLHL: What’s the best advice for someone considering a remodel? Ladd: Our first two questions for a homeowner who is considering a remodel are: “Why are you looking to remodel?” and “What’s your budget for this remodel?” When answering the why question, we work to get their goals in writing and get them to prioritize those goals. This allows us to see a more formalized window into what they are seeking while also helping in the communication process between family members, so that we all begin on the same page. With a prioritized list of goals, we have more tools to use if a budget point needs to be reached. By keeping these two points in front of us at all times, we are better able to work towards a scope that meets reality. For both parties, the budget really drives this reality. My job is also to manage expectations. What a client wants versus what they want to spend might not line up. It’s our job to say what we see is possible and probable early on. We also try to let people know that the design phase can take time; it’s important to get that right. The job itself takes time; change orders, while not desired, do happen, and this isn’t a TV show where things are completed in unrealistic time frames. We try to prep every client before a job starts so we can all work together through the expected and unexpected. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

SUSTAINABLE WOOD,

By Tyler Bierman Photography by Kim Dillon Product photography by Mark Katzman

CUSTOM DESIGN

D

David Stine of David Stine Furniture takes pride in handcrafting only the finest furniture.

David Stine is an accomplished man. He was raised on a 4th generation, self-sustaining dairy farm. They grew their own crops, butchered their own meat and built their own furniture. Stine then worked his way through law school at George Washington University. However, after practicing law for a bit, he decided it was time to head back to the farm. As Stine puts it, “There wasn't really an epiphany moment for me. After graduating and a year of practicing, I just realized that it wasn't for me, so I took off on my own and officially started David Stine Furniture back in 1997.” More than 20 years later, David Stine Furniture is still in Jersey County working to handcraft beautifully simple and sustainable, custom furniture out of Illinois' finest timber. Stine's company focuses solely on “big flat surfaces” meaning tables, desks, headboards, benches and more. They do this to let the material itself be the focal point. Stine explains, “I try to celebrate that material rather than twisting the piece of wood into any sort of shape. I find it much more interesting and challenging to just let the wood be what it wants to be.”

20

AUGUST 2019 STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM

His respect for the trees that they use doesn't end there. In fact, the trees they cut down are all sourced from his family farm, and they take great care of them. They never cut down live trees, only harvesting what's either dead or encroaching on the family's farmland. Stine continues, “We really just let the trees grow. We don't worry about trying to maximize our yields and to log every ten years. It's a totally sustainable system where we let the forest do what it wants and we harvest what we need.” From there it's just a matter of finding the right wood for the right client. Stine works with both residential customers and commercial clients to find the piece that's right for their needs, whether it be a coffee table that ties the family room together or a conference table that makes a big statement. It's something he takes pride in and that his clients notice. Stine goes on, “I feel that our customers really respond well to the fact that they get truly personal service. What I do isn't like a commodity. It's a piece of their home. It's the opportunity to really participate that I think keeps people coming back.”

For Stine, exceeding his customers' expectations is incredibly gratifying, but if you ask what the most rewarding part of the job is, he'll tell you that it's simply just getting to do what he loves every day. Stine explains, “You know, I do enjoy meeting or especially exceeding my customers’ expectations and just allowing people to realize that they can have a super custom piece of furniture. But I think at the end of the day, my favorite part of my work is the fact that I get to be involved in every aspect of this work, from selecting and harvesting the trees to building and delivery. It really keeps me engaged, and I never get bored.” To see more of the amazing pieces of furniture that David Stine creates or to get started on finding a work of art of your own, visit his website at StineWoodworking.com or on Instagram. AUGUST 2019 STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM

RSI Kitchen & Bath PLATINUM WINNER More than 200 square feet

T

he home, built in 1909, was one of the first mansions constructed in University City. The current owners have transformed the entire home, and it was time for the master bath to be refreshed. RSI Kitchen & Bath was challenged with turning a small bathroom with one pedestal sink, toilet and clawfoot tub into a luxurious master suite. The owners had been showering inside the small clawfoot tub for years, so a separate shower was at the top of the list of must-haves for the new design. The design called for repurposing four rooms and part of a hallway to create the new layout, which would include a bathroom, a functional closet and a room just for shoes. The final design doubled the size of the bathroom and allowed for his-and-her vanity areas, a two-person shower and a separate toilet room with a linen cabinet. The clawfoot tub was situated into the new bathing area to provide for a quiet, relaxing space with a comfortable chair. Classic-styled cabinetry, durable quartz countertops, marble-look porcelain wall tile and heated tile floors create a timeless look. Venetian gold faucets and accents add that extra touch of luxury. The elements all combine to achieve a grand master bathroom suite that will hopefully endure the next 100 years.

Why the judges love it: We love how the style of the new design still fits with the period of the home. A beautiful mix of traditional details with a nod to a more updated look done in a clean way. This new layout is so much more functional. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources. Photography by Anne Matheis

Stylecraft Homes PLATINUM WINNER 150 – 200 square feet

T

his master bath was designed by Stylecraft Homes to create a balance between traditional and contemporary design as well as between masculine and feminine. The traditional marble tile floors are heated and laid in a less traditional pattern. The soft, semi-translucent mosaic tile on the vanity wall offers a counterbalance to the rigid geometric accent wall and floating framed black granite floor in the shower. The vanities include lighted and powered medicine cabinets for plenty of storage. Why the judges love it: The tile selection in the shower make it a show stopper! We love the simple sophistication of the vanity area and how the designer framed the vanity with marble. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

Castle Design PLATINUM WINNER 55 – 150 square feet

W

hen it came to this first-floor bathroom remodel, Castle Design took cues from the Bali-inspired vibe of the home. Lush gardens, rich woods and a warm color palette played a role in the design. The 87-square-foot bath is the only one located on the first floor, so functionality was equally as important to the design as style. The designer used the Jack-and-Jill layout to create a unique floor plan that divided the vanity area from a fully accessible wet room. In the vanity area, the opaque, bronze glass vanity cabinet has ample storage and clean lines. Two sinks allow for ease of use by the two adjoining bedrooms. The vinyl wall covering features an island-inspired textural straw effect while mimicking the look of tile. Its waterproof nature makes it perfect in the bathroom setting. Silver floral sconces by Visual Comfort add a botanical note and soften the crisp, modern lines of the bath fixtures. The wet area features elements of universal design including a zero-threshold, easily accessible shower. Challenged by the small footprint, the designer selected

clean-lined Kohler Loure towel bars, which provide a simpler and more compact solution to the typical wall-mounted towel bar. The bathroom is flanked by two reclaimed wood doors that offer breathtaking views of the home’s gardens. The landscape views inspired the unique mix of nature-inspired materials and modern elements. The designer says, “This thoughtfully designed bath proves that architecture is at its best when in harmonious, close contact with nature -- a cornerstone of Balinese design.” Why the judges love it: This is one of the most impressive Jack-and-Jill baths we have ever seen. The mix of the wall covering and sconces on the vanity wall is everything! Separating the shower and sinks is so functional. We love the Balinese influence! See stlouishomesmag.com for resources. Castle Design PLATINUM WINNER Under 55 square feet

I

nspired by Schumacher’s Queen of Spain wallpaper, which was introduced in 1963 when it was featured in an iconic black-and-white photo of Mick Jagger, Castle Design created a hip-traditional powder room for their clients. The designer created a scheme that blended traditional elements found in the home with modern details to create a space fit for the trendsetting wallcovering the homeowners requested. Brass elements, such as the angular sconces and delicate framed mirror, pop against the organically patterned wallpaper. The Kohler Purist faucet is a modern twist on a vintage cross-handle design. The room’s petite footprint of only four feet was a challenge, but the designer embraced the small square footage by designing tailored elements like the custom-made floating vanity to

fit perfectly into the floor plan. The homeowners have three young children, so functionality was also key. Castle Design incorporated a vanity backsplash and solid wood chair rail with panel molding to ensure durability and easy clean up. This small space is now elevated with style and a little rockstar swagger. Why the judges love it: We love the rockstar approach the designer brought to the space. The wainscoting is beautiful. pdating a tired, builder-grade material bathroom into a glamorous spa-like retreat was the priority for the homeowner and task for a designer at Marcia Moore Design. While the space they had to work with was grand, the products were drab. One of the client’s must-haves was a freestanding tub with bubble jets as well as a floating vanity. The designer removed the drop-in tub, tub surround and large pillars to immediately open up the space. The first material chosen was an iridescent accent tile. Cascading sconces complement and draw attention to the waterfall feel of the accent tile. The cabinets are custom made and include custom inserts that store and organize the homeowner’s items at their exact specifications. Under-cabinet lighting adds a soft glow. Shining chrome fixtures and additional chrome accents heighten the spa feel. The bathroom now not only looks stunning, but functions exactly as the homeowner wants. Why the judges love it: The new design now is so open, clean, fresh, sleek and sophisticated. We love the detail on the vanities and under-cabinet lighting. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

fter 18 years of using her master bath, the client was ready to breathe some fresh air into the outdated bath construction with builder-grade materials. She was seeking a relaxing space where she could get ready for work each morning and unwind after a long day. Design firm, Youtopia Designs, along with Berkley Construction focused on making the new design fresh and modern. A freestanding tub was also a must for the homeowner. As the designers got to know their client, they gained further insight into her African heritage and decided to incorporate aspects of her culture into the overall design. The first thing they did was flip the original tub and shower locations for better circulation in the room. A small, white rhombus mosaic tile was used on the shower floor, which leads your eye to the tiled, curved wall. Adjacent to the rhombus tile is an oversized wall tile that incorporates various earth tones and creates asymmetrical balance in the room. The designers interpretation of African influence is characterized with ethnic patterns on the throw pillows and rugs. They also incorporated an abstract painting featuring a woman wearing traditional accessories harkening back to the client’s heritage. Why the judges love it: We like how the designers changed the tub and shower location to create a wet area. The curved wall behind the tub is an unexpected design detail. The use of color is very effective in the space. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

he lack of a powder room on the first floor prompted this bathroom design by Marcia Moore Design. What was once a coat closet became the spot for the new powder room. At only 24 inches deep, the designer also stole some space from the large front entry to allow for a small-scale toilet and vanity in the new powder room. A pocket door was added to enhance the usability of the space. The homeowner loves saturated color and bold design and was not afraid to take a risk on the daring Cole & Son wallpaper. The console sink with brass stand and exposed plumbing is appropriate for the time period of the home, which was built in the 1920s. The Waterworks faucet also honors the aesthetic. The ribbed texture in the Visual Comfort light fixtures complements the coral design on the wallpaper. The mirror was painted black to match the wallpaper and baseboards for an overall cohesive design. Why the judges love it: The design did a great job of honoring the historic aspect of the home. The vanity perfectly fits the 1920s style. We love the choice of wallpaper. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources. Photography by Karen Palmer

acing a bathroom that had not been touched since the home had been built in the 1950s, Marcia Moore Design brought the space up to the times while honoring the Mid-Century Modern style of the 50s. The previous bath was small with only one sink, a small shower and a soffit that closed in the bathroom. A hall linen closet abutted the shower wall, so the designer stole space from the hall closet to expand the bathroom to include two sinks and a larger shower. They also removed the soffit to visually expand the space. To achieve the Mid-Century Modern styling, material selections were extremely important. The warm, natural color and graining of the solid walnut cabinetry led the way. The homeowners loved the contrast between the warm wood tones and the black, white and brass color palette. A hexagon shape on the floor played well with the square wall tile. The Mid-Century Modern style is also emphasized in the simple, streamlined materials like the Kohler Purist faucet. Why the judges love it: What a transformation! This bathroom has a great Mid-Century Modern feel. We love the variation in the graining of the wood cabinetry. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources. uring her three-decade career in the industry, award-winning designer Gigi Lombrano has assembled an impressive list of clients who wouldn’t dream of working with anyone else. These owners, first discovered her talents 20 years ago and, even when relocating to other cities, called on her to personalize their homes. Returning to the St. Louis area in 2006, the couple purchased this traditionally styled, 8,000-square-foot residence in Frontenac, where they raised their twin sons. When the boys left home, Lombrano and the wife joined forces to create a new look for their empty-nester lifestyle. By this time, what had begun as a designer/ client relationship had evolved into a close friendship. “Gigi is a great listener, and she knows me like the back of her hand,” says the wife. To which Lombrano responds, “We collaborate on everything; nothing intimidates her, and we never tire of each other.” Last spring, with houseguests scheduled to arrive for the PGA Championship in August, the creative duo seized the opportunity to give the home another complete makeover. Describing her client as “very tailored and couture, but loving details,” Lombrano suggested a “neo-glam” aesthetic, stylish and sophisticated with a bit of “flash.” The décor would focus on beautiful shapes and lines, intriguing textures and patterns, meticulous detailing and a dignified palette of gray, blue, silver and black. For “flash,” they decided on fuchsia, one of the owner’s favorite hues. The challenge for Lombrano was to incorporate this bold color choice — and other surprising elements — into each space so seamlessly that they would complement, rather than detract from, the elegant ambience. With only five months to achieve their goal, the redesign was a major undertaking. “Friends and family are everything to us, and we entertain a lot,” the wife explains, “so I wanted the spaces to flow together.” Starting at the front entrance, the exterior was accented with limestone, and a custom, dark mahogany entry door with a neo-classic X motif detailing that would be repeated elsewhere in the home. Inside, the main-level oak flooring was stained and refinished to match the entry door. Open to the foyer, the formal dining room is a perfect illustration of their collaborative ingenuity. An alcove on the back wall was eliminated and rebuilt as a full-wall refrigerated wine cooler with a 498-bottle capacity. The remaining walls were covered in metallic grasscloth, accentuating the high-gloss, dark-toned furnishings, which include the owners’ original dining table and chairs, reupholstered in a Kate Spade silk with striped velvet backs and metallic trim. candlesticks and a mid-1800s clock from Paris add simple elegance, and the silk-and-wool rug hints at things to come with its deconstructed fuchsia pattern. Overhead, the rich gray ceiling introduces a surprising touch of glam, shimmering subtly with what homeowner refers to as “pixie dust.” Transitioning from the foyer to the living room, the fireplace surround was faux painted to resemble the foyer’s marble flooring, and the decorative firescreen repeats the decorative X motif pattern of the entry door. Demonstrating her own artistic skill, the owner refinished each button on the firescreen by hand for a similar metallic finish. The living room ceiling soars to 18 feet, and to create a more intimate atmosphere for this expansive gathering space, the original two sofas were replaced with a Baker loveseat in a tone-on-tone Manuel Canovas satin stripe and four sleek, contemporary klismos chairs in textured silk. The denouement arrives in the activity areas, where the cool, serene ambience is transformed by a vivid burst of fuchsia. In the casual dining area, a classic, dark-toned harbor pedestal table is surrounded by contemporary Vanguard wing chairs that blend fuchsia faux leather with an eye-catching fuchsia-and-gray houndstooth fabric.

Similarly dramatic, the adjacent hearth room was furnished with new sofas in a neutral Manuel Canovas windowpane fabric, arranged around an oversize, custom-built ottoman. Pre-owned and a longtime family “essential,” the ottoman was reupholstered for the third time in a fuchsia-and-gray Romo fabric with faux leather sides. Granite was installed on the fireplace surround and the firescreen has an X motif pattern; the wallpaper resembles grasscloth and the windows are lined with drapes in a simple polka dot design. A soothing blue-gray was chosen for the exquisite main-floor master retreat, where the attention to detail literally becomes an art form. The clean-lined canopy bed is swathed in silk Beacon Hill bedding, trimmed with Houlès beaded tassels. Above the bed hangs a stunning cartouche from a church in Italy, and when this piece failed to adequately fill the space, Melodie Shocklee was engaged to paint a trompe l’oeil frame, cleverly ornamented with his/her crowns in Swarovski crystals. Reupholstered in a lush Scalamandré fabric, the bench at the foot of the bed features beaded trim and Houlès rosettes. The theme is repeated in Clarence House drapes, accented with Houlès braid to which Lombrano added rosettes. Still more detailing is evident in the récamier chaise, covered in Osborne & Little cut velvet with a combination of Houlès braid and metallic fringe. Top: Accented with a dramatic cartouche from a church in Italy, the master suite’s canopy bed is sumptuously detailed in silk, beaded Houlès tassels, and Swarovski crystals. The fuchsia-&-gray color scheme reappears in the floral duvet on the Universal bed, contrasted with a Manuel Canovas stripe on the footstools. Overhead, a crystal-beaded cage chandelier provides another glamorous touch.

On the lower level, the fuchsia-and-gray color scheme makes its reappearance in the entertainment area, but each of the three guest suites has been given its own unique décor. The “black-and-white” bedroom showcases a Barbara Barry duvet and bedding, florals and polka dots and another cartouche, this one acquired in Memphis. A second bedroom has a Tyrolean theme with an FFDM bed and side tables, a crewelwork-covered loveseat, framed antique needlepoint and gold-finished Louis XVI chairs “rusticated” with potato sack burlap and upholstery tacks. The third bedroom emphasizes pattern, texture and metallics with a Universal bed, beaded crystal cage chandelier and a fuchsia-and-gray duvet contrasted with footstools in a Clarke & Clarke stripe. The epitome of “neo-glam,” this extraordinary residence proves several things: handled skillfully, bold design choices can be both tasteful and spectacular. Meticulous detailing adds excitement — and a whole new dimension — to the décor of a luxury home. And, in a highly competitive field, Gigi Lombrano’s unique ability to interpret her clients’ lifestyle and vision is clearly the reason for her enduring success. “I look at every loss and mourn; then I look at that loss and see it as an opportunity to try something new.”True to her word, it was the loss of two huge oak trees 10 years ago that transformed Martha LaFata’s Webster Groves garden into the lush, green showplace it is today. Spreading over an entire acre, the primarily shaded landscape appears as a verdant ocean animated by wave after wave of undulating beds filled with over 300 varieties of hosta, untold astilbes, numerous ferns, delicate Japanese maples and finely-textured conifers. With multiple aspects to explore, the garden seems to go on forever and has become a garden tour Mecca for local visitors, including members of the Missouri Botanical Garden and national gardening organizations meeting in St. Louis. When those trees had to be taken down, Martha had already been gardening on her one-acre property for 30 years. From the start it was an adventure. Thickets of honeysuckle and nondescript shrubs surrounded her 100-year-old home. “It was totally overgrown,” she recalls. “You couldn’t see the house from the road.” As she cleared the land, she uncovered horticultural treasures. “The house had been owned by a botanist, but she had been in poor health. There were many nice old plants — things you couldn’t find in nurseries at that time. I used a Wayside Garden catalogue as a guide to try to figure out what things were. There were a lot of bulbs and spring ephemerals (which die back in hot weather) in the garden. I discovered epimedium (a delicate, shade-loving ground cover with the common name

“bishop’s hat” from the shape of its leaves), which is more common now than it was then. It was exciting.” Included in Martha’s discoveries was the revelation that what she considered an ugly, euonymous-covered hillside in the backyard had once been a terraced garden. The loss of the trees transformed the yard in more ways than one. The heavy equipment needed to cut up and discard the trees destroyed the courtyard area between the house and the garage. Different spaces opened in the back of the yard and Martha knew she needed additional plants. “It was a good excuse to start something new. I started getting involved with the Hosta Society, and I met two gardeners who lived nearby,” she recounts. The gardeners turned out to be Jean Hudson and Pat Payton, whose beautiful, hosta-filled Webster Groves garden is an institution. Living up to their notorious generosity, they took Martha under their wing. “So many plants in my garden came from them,” she says. “I bet half of my hostas were first theirs.” As well as plants, the two gardeners contributed inspiration. Jean was at the house one day when Martha was complaining about all the maintenance involved in reining in the euonymous hillside, which she considered ugly. Jean suggested getting rid of it. When Martha protested, citing all the work involved, Jean countered, “How hard can it be?” Martha recalls, “She went and got a shovel and started digging. The two of us tore out the first part.”

“ I like to play more with The shady half of the hillside now has giant hostas. On the sunny half of the hillside, Martha planted different combinations of dwarf conifers, lace-leaved Japanese maples and lots of peonies. She cites fellow Hosta Society member Bruce Buehrig as helping to inspire her with his expertise in small conifers. “I like to play more with color and texture than with flowers,” she says. Her degree in art, expertise in photography and innate sense of design has allowed her to instinctively integrate foliage colors and textures into her lovely, flowing landscapes. She also has taken numerous classes at the Missouri Botanical Garden. “It’s basically using the principles of good design,” she says. “It’s sort of paving with plants, plus I can always pick things up and move them if they don’t work out. “I have always loved almost anything Japanese,” Martha adds. “I made a trip to Japan about eight or nine years ago with one of my daughters, and I went to as many gardens as I could. I like to think that my garden has a little Japanese influence.” She also tours as many local gardens as possible, laughing that garden tours “can be dangerous” in terms of wanting to do new things in your own garden. She is particularly fond of “Full Moon,” a small Japanese maple featuring leaves with rounded centers circled by radiating points which emerge gold, then turn chartreuse in

summer and red and orange in fall. She also is partial to low-growing, shade-tolerant Japanese forest grass, which comes in gold, variegated and green varieties. Favorite local nurseries she visits to add to her plant collection include Timberwinds Nursery, Greenscape Gardens, Rolling Ridge, Garden Heights Nursery and Maypop Garden Shop. In addition, she occasionally travels to Springfield, Illinois, to a nursery specializing in Japanese maples. Martha does 99 percent of the work in the garden herself. While her husband Paul occasionally helps with the heavy lifting, “he is a golfer and I prefer he saves his back for golf,” she says with a laugh. “I used to play a fair amount of golf, but I would rather do this,” she says with a wave of her hand toward the garden. In the spring and early summer, she can spend as much

as 40 hours a week in her yard. “I don’t want to feel like I coulda’, woulda’, shoulda’,” she explains. She is generally up between 5:30 and 6 a.m., when it is light enough to take her Norwich Terrier Pippa for a walk. “Then, I get to it. The garden is never finished. There is always something that I am trying to get right; spaces I am trying to fill in when something dies, or something that gets twice as big as expected.” To keep weeds down, she uses a lot of mulch along with a lot of hand weeding as well as amending her soil with homemade compost. Her reward is seeing the beauty she has created but also in sharing what she has created with others. “You don’t want to do all this in a vacuum,” she emphasizes. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources and additional photos.

THE DIRT

WATER LOVERS

As summer draws to a close, be sure to make the best of your pond-side oasis. Here are some local landscapers' favorite water-lovers that can live in or around your pond. Edited by Moe Godat

VICTORIA WATER LILY Also know as

VICTORIA AMAZONICA AND VICTORIA CRUZIANA GIANT WATER LILY Information provided by Josh Bauer, Bauer Falls

WATER TEMPERATURE 75 degrees.

LOCATION + LIGHT Thrive in ponds exposed to afternoon sun.

FERTILIZER Mix in 10-10-10 fertilizer in with the dirt at the bottom of a large lily pot.

BLOOM TIME Bloom at night with white flowers that last until early morning. The white flowers then take a pink hue and sink under the water’s surface.

The Victoria Amazonica, commonly called a Giant Water Lily, has vertical rims that are 2 to 3 inches high. The underside of the leaf is purple. The Victoria Cruziana has vertical rims that are 3 to 4 inches high, and the underside of the leaves are green. Both varieties produce leaves 2 to 4 feet in diameter in our pond. The rim and underside of the leaves on both varieties have large thorns. We have Koi, and they have never been scratched by the thorns. It has been our experience that if planted too early, and if there is a cold snap, they do not recover. Although they are grown from seeds, we do not have the facilities to grow them ourselves, so we purchase plants that have been started in nurseries. They can be purchased at the better plant stores or online. Once home, mix 1 1⁄2 cups of 10-10-10 fertilizer with the dirt in bottom of a large lily

pot and form a cone. Next, spread the roots out around the cone, cover with dirt and top with a 1⁄2 inch of pea gravel. Be sure to cover the pot with a couple pieces of slate to stop the Koi from digging in it. Weekly, cut off the older leaves and spent flowers at the same time you clean up our other lily varieties. Cutting them back to three leaves will yield five leaves within one week. This is all the leaf coverage that our pond can handle. I add 5 fertilizer tablets every two weeks. Like all tropical water lilies, their bloom time is in the hottest part of the summer. They are prettiest from mid-July to early September. We grow them because they are beautiful, unique and a source of pride when they do well. Night bloomers in general are our favorites because we can enjoy the blooms later in the evening and through midmorning when we are most likely to sit outside.

Iris sibirica “Caesar’s Brother” is our favorite water-loving perennial. These irises perform well in summer sun or partial shade but will thrive best around ponds or water features where they stabilize the soil from erosion. In late May, their elegant purple blooms will appear atop slender, green foliage and peak blooming will continue into June. A great plant for rain gardens! Sarah Riley, Bowood Farms.

A sought after perennial by many customers, the hardy hibiscus plant has so many wonderful qualities. First, it performs wonderfully in wet or waterlogged soils, yet it is also drought tolerant. It can handle a range of sunlight conditions, from part shade to full sun. Its versatility helps it thrive in those hard to grow spots. Hardy hibiscus produces stunning dinner-plate sized blooms all summer long and although perennial to this area, the exotic flowers can add a touch of the tropics to the Midwest garden. The list goes on, but one notable feature is that the young leaves, flowers and shoots are edible and can be used in a variety of culinary applications! Hillary Fitz, Greenscape Gardens.

The “Lion King” Japanese Iris is absolutely fabulous! Nothing less could describe the incredible show this Japanese Iris puts on. Planted in ideally moist conditions, these majestic plants grow to a tall, stately height of 4 feet and will be covered with gigantic 7 to 8 inch flowers that are fully double with standards and fall much larger than the species. Japanese Iris is naturally at home next to ponds or streams where they benefit from the moist soil. Ann Lapides, Sugar Creek Nursery.

Water Snowball is one of the absolute best choices for attracting Monarch butterflies to the garden! This water plant produces clusters of fragrant white blooms all summer through fall. The team at Chalily Ponds & Gardens.

The Baldcypress tree has a good growth habit and its red bark creates nice winter interest. It's an amazingly adaptable plant, tolerating both dry conditions and even some standing water. Its tolerance for wet areas makes it a great tree for planting in or around a pond. Justin Verbryck, Frisella Nursery.

SMALL SCALE

Just for Her

By Kim Hill

Havens for busy women, she sheds serve as more than just a pretty place. Just ask gardener Jan Braswell. First, there were man caves. Then, busy women decided they needed spaces to call their own where they could retreat from the world. We’ve started calling these spaces "she sheds." These backyard retreats are just that — retreats. Beyond that, hard-and-fast rules and definitions fly out the window. She sheds can be anything you want: a cozy spot for reading or napping, a place to display prized collections, a haven for serious crafters or a home office that doubles as a guest house. Scroll through Pinterest or Houzz for 30 seconds, and you’ll have more ideas for she sheds than you have acreage. Jan Braswell of Wildwood chuckles when visitors to her home “ooh” and “ahh” over her delightful she shed. That’s because Jan designed the structure about 10 years ago, long before the term “she shed” entered our lexicon. An avid gardener, Jan wanted a space for the tools she needed to maintain her large perennial beds and other areas of their three-acre property. “My garage is underneath the house, so it’s not convenient at all to get tools in and out of it,” Jan explains. “My little spot is really a working garden shed.” No matter what you call it, the building serves its purpose with charm. For the design, Jan first sketched her ideas; her husband, an architect who works in construction and development, reworked the plans for the shed. The prefab framing was done offsite, and workers with Jan’s interior design firm, Color Concepts, finished the construction.

58

AUGUST 2019 STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM

Jan designed the structure to reflect the architectural lines and color scheme of her home. The exterior is fiber cement siding; the roof is DaVinci synthetic shake. The green door adds a pop of color, while the planked landing provides space for a porch swing. “It’s a good little spot for sitting on the porch,” Jan says. “My grandkids enjoy the swing, too.” To up the charm factor even more, Jan added a planter box from Hooks & Lattice and an address plaque. “I’d ordered the house numbers years ago from Vietri, but I could never really find a place where they fit on my house,” she says. “But I just loved them, so I put them on the garden shed.” The shed’s interior measures 8 feet by 10 feet. Inside, deep wire shelving holds pots, birdseed and hand tools. Hoes, rakes and shovels hang from hooks, and a ceiling fan helps circulate air as the interior isn’t heated or cooled. For a convenient workspace, Jan installed a countertop left over from their kitchen remodel. Jan Braswell’s shed may not be a retreat itself, but its functionality allows her to do what one of the things she loves most — gardening. “Although I do get help with the big clean-up chores, I find getting out in the garden, designing and planting is a great stress reliever,” she says. “And I do love my garden shed. It not only adds character to my garden, it’s functional as well.” See stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

Kirkwood residents Chris and Melissa Fox had built their home nearly a decade ago. Even though it was relatively new they weren’t happy. While the vessel sinks provided visual eye candy they weren’t very functional; water splashed all over the countertops, the room was dark, and the built-in corner Jacuzzi tub was cumbersome. “Their dislike for the brown cabinetry finally made them decide to do something,” says designer Leah Jerrell, owner of LJ Interior Designs. A friend of a friend had referred Jarrell to the couple. She reminisced about their first meeting. “We paged through some of Chris and Melissa’s inspirations pictures. Sometimes people like the essence of a photograph but need someone to hone in on what they really like so they don’t go barking up the wrong tree. We immediately clicked.” It didn’t take long for them to make a plan. Her clients wanted a clean, bright, timeless look and that translated into an all-white bathroom. Fortunately, the size of the bathroom was not a problem. Leah was able to use the same footprint. Both of the old brown cabinets were swapped out for new white vanities with more user-friendly undermount sinks with Corian Quartz countertops. “Some people want more storage, but Melissa liked having a place to sit down to put her makeup on or just take a moment to focus on herself. So, we decided to keep the same basic cabinet designs.” Once the Jacuzzi tub was removed, the space was perfect for an esthetically pleasing freestanding tub by Wildon Homes. Even though Jarrell went with Moen chrome faucets she chose a stunning antique brass finish chandelier to hang over the tub. “I love mixing finishes. It just makes the space so much more interesting." Leah wanted to bring in some texture to the all-white room, so she suggested using shiplap on the walls painted Sherwin Williams Pure White. She understood her clients liked the idea of a hardwood floor but also knew it would be a tough mission to maintain. They have two very active young daughters. It was easy to achieve the same look with a look-alike wood tile Leah found at The Tile Shop in Brentwood. Last, but not least, it was time to tackle the problematic shower. Leah was quick to defend her choice of white subway tile, a traditional favorite. “I wanted to keep a classic look but not be boring. So I changed it up and used bigger 4x12 tiles.” The size of the shower was more than ample, big enough to add his-and-hers shower heads and individual thermostat controls. Canine lovers will appreciate the hand-held shower centered on the wall. It was added for a special member of the family, the adorable pooch, Bodie. All tails were wagging as accent mirrors and soothing artwork completed this Kirkwood bathroom makeover. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources and additional photos.

BEFORE & AFTER

FOREST CHIC By Melissa Mauzy Photographie By Li

Contractor: John Kichter Designer: Rebekah Murphy, Karr Bick Kitchen & Bath

AUGUST 2019 STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM

A kitchen tucked away in the woods goes from immense to intimate.

After purchasing a ranch on nearly three wooded acres outside the city, the new homeowners quickly made plans to renovate the vast kitchen. Having renovated four kitchens in past homes, they were familiar with undertaking such a major project. But this time, they chose to work with a professional to make the process easier and stress free. The couple was introduced to Rebekah Murphy, designer at Karr Bick Kitchen & Bath, by their realtor. “We clicked right away,” says the homeowner. “She understood my design aesthetic and made everything so seamless.” The home’s exterior had a lodge feel, but the interior was Tuscan. The homeowner really wanted the kitchen to match the feel of the home’s exterior. She describes her vision as “Forest Chic,” meaning neutral colors that mix well with the greens and browns she sees from her window: simple, clean lines and elements of visual interest with a rustic touch. Rebekah says that from their initial meeting, her client was ready to hit the ground running. “She was someone who really helped the project move quickly by making decisions on materials and layout,” Rebekah says. Rebekah created three to four different layouts for the space as a starting point for the design. She says the biggest challenge

Cabinetry by Mouser Cabinetry.

of the project was the large amount of space they had to work with, nearly 600 square feet. The old kitchen layout didn’t function right, and the work area was scrunched together. The new design called for the area to breathe with a more large-scale layout. To fill the square footage, Rebekah incorporated two islands into the kitchen. In one area, a massive island with a wood top was made to feel more like a table than an island. With chairs on all sides, it is a great place for the homeowners and guests to sit during meals or entertaining. The second island is the husband’s spot because he is the cook in the family. There is no lack of storage in the new design with tons of pull out drawers for pots and pans. A coffee bar behind the oven wall includes doors to conceal appliances. With the layout challenge solved, the next obstacle to tackle was ensuring the space was balanced. “We had to figure out how to embrace the rustic qualities the homeowner wanted while also marrying it to an industrial edge with touches of feminine charm,” Rebekah explains. For cabinetry, the designer encouraged the homeowner to think beyond stark white. The tungsten perimeter cabinets are not white or gray but somewhere softly in between. They are finished with contrasting dark hardware. The dark gray island cabinetry has hints of distressing to soften the look and bring in rustic qualities. Dark wood beams channel the rustic roots of the home and it's rural location; however, they were almost left out of the project due to placement issues. “The overall look wouldn’t be the same without the beams,” says Rebekah. Also complementing the rustic feel of the home, the dark, herringbone floor tile has hints of wood tones that echo the wood beams on the ceiling. The designer laid it in a herringbone pattern for a softer foundation against the rest of the kitchen elements. The stainless steel appliances have an industrial vibe and bring in a more contemporary edge. For the feminine flair, the homeowner fell in love with the show-stopping backsplash mosaic tile that has hints of flower designs in contrasting dark colors that pick up on reflective mirror tones. They sparkle every so slightly in certain light to complement the stainless appliances. “The mosaic is so unique, and pictures don’t do it justice,” Rebekah says. The backsplash is a favorite aspect of the design for both homeowner and designer, but Rebekah also loves the amount of natural light that spills into the space, and the view into the backyard is breathtaking. “You feel really serene and calm in this kitchen,” she says. “I am proud of how it reflects the homeowner’s taste and how proud she is of this space.” As for the homeowner, she says picking a favorite part is tough. Beyond the backsplash, she also loves the “beautiful combination of different materials” in the space. “Functionally, I love the amount of cabinet space that Rebekah worked into the design,” she adds. “For once, we have plenty of room to store everything!” See stlouishomesmag.com for resources and additional photos.

SPOTLIGHT

Eames Chair

EVOLUTION Though still recognizable at first glance, the iconic Eames chair is changing to fit every home and style. By Moe Godat Photography provided by Herman Miller Furniture.

When the Eames couple first began designing chairs for Herman Miller Furniture in the late 1940s, they focused their designs on comfort, fashion and affordability. However, the married couple’s most famous innovation centered around luxury for then-modern homes, leading to its inevitable placement in museums all over the world. As a piece created after WWII, the Eames chair reflects a time of “waste not, want not” while still adding flair and style to any room. Charles Eames and his wife, Ray, wanted to create a chair that had “the warm, receptive look of a well-used first baseman’s mitt. ”To achieve this, the pair used fine leather for the seat cushions, backrest and ottoman. These cushions, instead of being stapled or nailed down, are attached to the curved wood by a zipper that adheres to a stiff plastic backing. The Eames chair has three curved plywood shells that make up the headrest, backrest and seat base. When production first began in 1956, a veneer of Brazilian rosewood covered the five pressed layers of plywood to give the chair the air of luxury; now, due to accessibility, the veneer is primarily finished with cherry, walnut or Palisander rosewood. “This handsome chair is immediately recognizable by anyone with an eye for contemporary furniture,” says Dana Romeis of Castle Design. The Eames chair has stood the test of time with its timeless look and maximum comfort, acting as a centerpiece for homes and offices for the past 60 years. You may even recognize the Eames chair from its countless appearances in movies and television shows. But recently, the Eames chair has been going through some changes to make it fit more comfortably in a modern home. “Historically, its appeal is in its classic masculine form, finishes and feet-up comfort,” Romeis comments. “The recent addition of a pale ash frame with ivory leather rather than walnut and black leather makes it instantly more feminine. This softer feel can slide right into a lighter, airy room.” With so many options available today, design connoisseurs and relaxation-lovers alike can find the perfect Eames chair for their space. By Miun Gleeson Photography by Rebecca Wilson/Adjustable Focus Photography

An open-concept home offers scenic views from both front and back.

88

AUGUST 2019 STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM

Try finding a bad view when your home is located in between Lincoln Greens Golf Course in the front and Lake Springfield in the back. In addition to the prime location, the homeowner was drawn to the home’s modern contemporary feel and open floor plan. “It reminded me a lot of a California home,” he says. And he would know, having relocated from the West Coast before moving into the home in Springfield, Illinois. Trading the beach for a lake, his home showcases elevated modern design in the Midwest — and three times more space. Recently renovated, the home had a brand new base and was also a blank slate. Interior designer Dana Glover was brought in to leverage the open layout that also embraced the great outdoor views. “My concept was to create a sophisticated lake house that had to respond to the Midwest,” says Glover. At over 4,000 square feet, the home’s spacious floor plan offered unique design opportunities. Glover sought to “create meaningful areas” that had interest and personality. She was mindful of establishing room perimeters that were distinctive but didn’t feel boxed in. Glover used strategic furniture placement to create a conversation area in the living room, which features a lounge arrangement of a relaxing womb chair, sectional and side tables that are unified in their shared mid-century design. A room divider screen located behind a sofa creates a boundary between the living room and kitchen. Made of cerused teak wood, the divider does its job of being a barrier without completely breaking the flow.

The infusion of color in the home reflects the function of each space. The master bedroom features slate gray walls to achieve a masculine and urban feel. While the muted tone fosters the intimate space of a private bedroom, Glover injects inviting tones into common areas such as the warm terra cotta color in the basement living space. The dining room is the homeowner’s favorite space and most effectively features Glover’s intent to strike a unique design balance. “My goal was to create a design that was modern but comfortable, luxurious but casual,” she says. Grounded by a geometric wool area rug, the room is anchored by a narrow, walnut table that elongates the room. The multi-armed, antique brass chandelier captures the contemporary spirit of the space. Glover knew it was important to provide some visual relief from the clean lines and squares that are standard in modern design. Her efforts to add geometric variety throughout the home are evident in the curvature of the round living room coffee tables, globes in the dining room chandelier and even the undulating wave design of a credenza. Such elevated design touches give his home an urban and modern feel that almost makes you forget the scenic views outside. Almost. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

Escaping in Style: Spas

By Julia Johns

Places to go, things to do and see and people who are leaving their mark on the world of style.

The Spa at Four Seasons Hotel St. Louis, St. Louis, Missouri Photography courtesy of Four Seasons

When escaping to this Four Seasons Spa, it is impossible for guests to forget they are in St. Louis. Marnell Architecture, a Las Vegas firm also credited with the Mirage and Bellagio, recognized the grandeur of the city’s focal points and incorporated them in their design. Brett Ewing, president of Marnell Architecture, explained that the Gateway Arch is “a magnificent sculptural expression on an urban scale.” Thus, the Four Seasons was crafted to complement the Arch’s geometry in a contemporary fashion: the finished product is an oasis of light. To flood the building with natural light, the architects utilized two separate curtain wall technologies of glass and steel construction on its exterior. Similarly, the cantilevered, three-story Grand Stair is

Lake Austin Spa Resort, Austin, Texas Photography courtesy of Lake Austin Spa Resort

Adorned with decor that is one-of-a-kind and displaying art and antiques that are stunning, Lake Austin Spa Resort shows that beauty is essential to relaxation. Nestled in the Texas Hill Country, this paradise is the fruit of co-owner Michael W. McAdams’ s labor. In 1997, he and business partner Billy Rucks purchased the spa and began its reimagining. McAdams, who spent 13 years with Trammel Crow Design Centers cultivating an extensive knowledge of real estate and architectural design, built a truly unique getaway by working with craftsmen and artists from around the world. At the resort, guests will take a stroll from one of the 40 guest rooms on their way to the spa. First, this walk leads along a garden path exhibiting more than 300 species of plants. Then, guests will pass by the Pool Barn that houses a crystal-clear, 25-meter lap pool. Finally, they will reach the spa that boasts a façade of Austin stone that was carefully selected by McAdams for the artistic standard it set for the rest of the building. Equally as impressive is the spa’s interior that McAdams spent thousands of hours shopping for from California to Europe, New York to small towns. Lake Austin Spa Resort also takes care to incorporate the area’s local history of handicrafts. There is a display of quilts made by Joyce Massey, tapestries made by Denyse Schmidt, and handcrafted, circular light fixtures of spring green from David Jones. And once all treatments are complete, guests can retire to a state of complete serenity in the 1,000-square-foot quiet area known as the Blue Room.

another light-infused, glass structure; the connection of the event spaces, spa and lobby with transparent materials and unobstructed sightlines imparts upon guests the illusion of floating above the surrounding buildings. The 12,000-square-foot glass building frames the surrounding sights: the glistening Arch and sparkling Mississippi river. Once inside, guests will discover 12 treatment rooms including a couple's suite, heat experiential room, relaxation lounges, indoor water features and steam rooms — many of which have floor-to-ceiling windows. Ultimately, the hotel’s elements coalesce into a pillar of serenity and a dazzling beacon of light among the St. Louis skyline.

Bad Ragaz Spa, Bad Ragaz, Switzerland Photography courtesy of the Bad Ragaz Spa

The pride of the Bad Ragaz is its healing waters. Discovered almost 800 years ago gushing from the Tamina Gorge, this water runs at 97.7ºF and has been renowned for centuries. In 1535, the physician, naturalist and philosopher Paracelsus provided the first proof of this life-giving liquid’s healing properties. This moment marked the birth of spa tourism, but it was remarkably different than what we are familiar with today. At that time, visitors were lowered down on ropes into the gorge where they luxuriated for hours at a time. Since 1840, however, the water has been channeled over two and a half miles to the Bad Ragaz. Guests can now delight in the precious waters while relaxing in the pinnacle of modern opulence. The water is considered therapeutic

because it regenerates and strengthens the body; the body-temperature water embraces tired muscles and joints while guests relax their minds for a holistic experience. The Bad Ragaz has many different amenities, so guests can personalize their stay. From the historic Helenabad pool, sports pools and garden pools to the Sauna Landscape and Family Spa, there are options for all. Or for a truly extravagant experience, guests can have their every wish fulfilled at the Private Spa at Grand Resort Bad Ragaz. Featuring a whirlpool tub, steam bath, adventure shower, relaxation lounge, home cinema, garden terrace, sauna with a champagne cooler and private treatment and dining area, this option is the ultimate luxury. CLASSIC or CRAZE

FLOATING VANITIES Are you considering a bold vanity change in your home? Floating vanities are huge today, but these design professionals are telling us whether they think floating vanities are just a fad or if they’re here to stay. Edited by Moe Godat Photography by Anne Matheis

CLASSIC

Floating vanities used to be synonymous with contemporary bathroom design. We have more recently seen the floating vanity evolve to be incorporated in all different design styles and not only found in a modern interior. This versatility along with its ability to create more open visual space is the reason why we see this trend staying! Diane Mantovani Fogerty and Brett Clark, SAVVY Design Group. They are not for every bathroom. If what you have to work with is a small hall bath, there probably isn't enough space to create the visual impact we are all looking for. If the bathroom is of medium to generous size, what you give up in storage you pick up in a more spacious-feeling bathroom. Rather than the floor being "overlooked," it can become a statement. A floating vanity creates a number of opportunities that you can't get with a floor-mounted one. Is it a trend? Sure, but soon to become a classic. Jeffrey Hochman, Choteau Building Group. I think floating vanities have been around for a long time, but they’ve become more front and center now that the St. Louis style is making more of a clean line transformation. Added benefits to floating vanities are the ability to add indirect soft lighting below. Also, they create the illusion of more space by extending your flooring wall to the wall under a floating vanity. Bathrooms can tend to have more water on tile floors, so keeping cabinetry off the floor makes them last longer and stay looking new. Bob Burmeister, Marc Christian Fine Cabinetry. We love floating vanities in bathrooms and consider them the new look for traditional. A floating cabinet gives a feeing of airiness to the room. For a more contemporary look, we use a flat-panel door and hidden hardware. Then, we light the cabinet underneath. Doing this gives the family a night light in the room. C.J. Knapp, Yours By Design.

CRAZE

I think this is a trend, but while that may be, floating vanities cover many styles; modern, minimalist and transitional. They have been a refreshing change that complements a broad range of design. The open floor space adds to the room's spacial feel and from a practical sense the vanity contents are closer at hand. Keith Gegg, Gegg Design & Cabinetry. We appreciate the design and look for a sleeker space and it does free up some visual space and can look amazing. However, our gut tends to think it’s more of a fad than a classic! Jennifer Suydam, Ladd Suydam Contracting. Bathrooms are a place in the home where fad items seem to remain present for far longer than other areas. In our opinion, the floating vanity is a perfect example of this. From our customer experience, we have observed that the floating vanity, while looking clean and exciting, simply put does not fit into most customers style. Moreover, as customers transform their bathroom, they are looking to capitalize on space and functionality, which is something that floating vanities simply do not have a lot to offer. So as much as we love the look of a floating vanity, this leads us to have to label it a fad. Candice Davis, Lakeside Exteriors. A floating vanity has a sleek and modern look, but it might not be the best choice for all bathrooms. A floating vanity is a great cabinet choice if you want to make a small bathroom appear larger than it really is, or if you have a stylish floor that you want to see more of, or if a space with “easy-cleaning” is a must have. In certain instances, there are several benefits in using a floating vanity, but I feel like it is more of a trendy design element that does not have real staying power. Barbara Collins, Barbara Collins Interior Design. A floating vanity is first and foremost, I believe, an acquired taste. It won't fit in just anyone's home. It lends itself to a more contemporary manner for its clean, minimalistic appearance. When a design feature has stood the test of time and has been considered to be of high quality, then it earns the term CLASSIC. So for now, a floating vanity is a FAD. Mary Robinson, Home Elements.

BOTH

Floating vanities are a trendy element in residential design. Currently a popular choice for those who prefer a more contemporary look in their home, their clean, minimalist look is perfect for small-scale rooms where space is a premium. Because of their sleek lines, floating vanities do not fit well with more traditional styling giving them less broad-spectrum appeal. They are a classic feature, however, in commercial design, where they are often used in hospitality settings such as hotels and restaurants, they are standing the test of time. Lara Pennington, Directions in Design.
