HELLO
Gold has been recognized as a noble material since ancient times! There's no getting around it; the color gold is timeless. Sometimes it is considered trendy, but nevertheless, it's always at the forefront of design. What other color can make the most ordinary space shine with luxury and glamour? Ken Stuckenschneider, owner of Stuckenschneider Decoration & Design, used lots of gold accents in his before-and-after project to completely transform an outdated bathroom into an "All that Glitters" showpiece (page 68 ). Several of this year’s Baths of the Year winners (pages 16-23) also turned to gold accessories to take their winning spaces up a notch through the use of gold tile, trim, plumbing and lighting (page 12). Utilizing a modern twist on gold, Maggie Jewell, owner of MKS Designs, brings touches of gold throughout an entire home project. My favorite piece is a gorgeous settee covered in leopard print velvet Jewel placed at the end of the bed instead of a bed bench (page 26-33). Calm and relaxing living space is the ultimate goal for many of the homeowners featured in this issue. After the past 16 months, who wouldn't reap the benefits of a harmonious and serene home setting? Join us at our annual Island Hopping Kitchen Tour on Saturday, August 14 from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. as we raise money for Wings of Hope (page 59-65). You'll see the latest and greatest in St. Louis kitchen design. Hope to see you there! Enjoy,

White paint can be a tricky endeavor for most people as there are so many different shades to choose from. In making a selection, you will notice blue, pink, yellow, gray and even green undertones that may not be noticeable in the paint store but will become more visible depending on the lighting in your room. Anne Marie Boedges, Anne Marie Design Studio.
Chantilly Lace OC-65 by Benjamin Moore: The always-popular Chantilly Lace OC-65 is a go-to for a bright, fresh, white bathroom paint color. As one of the cleanest white paint colors, it’s extremely versatile and pairs well with many different materials and flooring. Flip the script and go for a softer trim option like Dove Wing OC-18, instead of the classic bright white trim.
Horseradish (PPG1086-1) by PPG: Horseradish is a creamy off-white. Its warm undertone will bring comfort and happiness to the space. Pair it with other shades of white and natural wood tones.
Seapearl OC-19 Benjamin Moore: Seapearl OC-19 is a softer off-white paint color with the slightest wink of gray. It pairs well with warm wood finishes and a crisp white trim and ceiling. For a more modern look, try bringing in a deep, black accent or paint color like Black Satin 2131-10.
Pure White SW 7005 by Sherwin Williams: Pure White has no undertones. It creates a softness that keeps spaces feeling bright without being stark. It reflects light well, making a space seem lighter and brighter.
Whenever I am asked what my favorite white is I reply, “It depends on the project.” The same color will look different on a front porch ceiling than it does in a west facing room. It also will appear different in different paint products from different manufacturers. It looks different in an eggshell or semi-gloss finish than it does in flat. How fine the titanium dioxide has been ground (which is the base for all paint) will also affect how the colorant reacts. I would advise you to seek an interior design professional’s help. The cost of the paint is small relative to paying a painter to paint and then repaint. C.J. Knapp, Yours By Design. Choose the paint color last and be open-minded. What’s right for your friend’s house may not be what’s right for yours. When selecting any paint color, particularly in a bathroom, there are three important factors to consider: lighting, lifestyle and the surrounding elements. Lighting impacts these undertones significantly, so it’s really important to observe whether there is more natural or artificial light and to watch how the color changes throughout the day. Lifestyle can impact what sheen/finish to choose. If you have an active household, you may want to consider a satin/eggshell finish for easy cleaning. A matte/flat finish can provide a soft look in a household that is calm and tidy. Lastly, the materials used in the bathroom will reflect in the paint color as well. After taking these factors into consideration and choosing the paint color last, the result will be a seamless and beautiful space. Kristie H. Clinard, Walnut Lily Co.

PLATINUM WINNER More than 200 square feet
Fratt & Bush Home The homeowners called on Fratt & Bush Home to create a master bath that would feel as if they had been transported on a vacation. The updated space includes a soaking tub, fireplace, double vanity, polished nickel fixtures and a rain shower head in an extra-wide shower that includes a marble bench. A separate water closet is covered in a whimsical wallpaper featuring Staffordshire dogs. The main bath area walls are covered in a beautiful yet smart vinyl wall covering that will withstand water and steam. A stunning mosaic in gorgeous shades of blue and white set the color scheme for the entire space. The mosaic has a center of mini bricks and is the piece de resistance of this luxurious master bath. Why the judges love it: The bench in the shower is so functional and beautiful. We love how the bathtub is placed in front of the fireplace. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources. C&M Interiors and Chouteau Building Group A constantly traveling professional wanted to transform his Clayton residence into a restful home. He worked with C&M Interiors and Chouteau Building Group to create an updated master bathroom to call his own. The main bathroom was originally laid out in an nonfunctional way with dated ‘90s décor. The designers were challenged by an unusually high ceiling and a wall of windows facing a busy street. By adding a charming barrel vault painted in Sherwin-Williams Black Fox, the space was transformed into a large, gallery style room with a stunning artistic chandelier to top it off. A custom high-lacquered vanity was specifically designed for the client and allows for light to bounce around the room. Neutral and textural tiles were selected to keep a masculine and tactile feel for this bachelor’s en suite. The main bathroom is now a comfortable inviting space that is both functional and high-end in appearance. Why the judges love it: The ceiling treatment is brilliant and enhances the height of the room. The colors were well chosen for a masculine feel. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources. Wolff Interiors The homeowner’s residence is overflowing with a collection of art that is daring and bold, and she wanted her powder room to feel like a piece of art. Wolff Interiors worked with the homeowner to update the bathroom from its generic feel. The designers chose a faux snakeskin wallpaper in an inky teal to base the design scheme around. The powder room is larger than a typical powder room, so the designers had to find pieces to fit the scale of the space. A large, white chandelier and oversized white plaster mirror are the perfect contrast to the dark walls. Gold accents in the space include a wall-mounted console table, sconces and hardware. To fill the large room, a custom vanity was designed with the beautiful hardware in mind. The countertop on the vanity has a laminated edge so that it wouldn’t get lost in the space. A simple silk Roman shade matched to the color of the wallpaper with inset trim gives texture and definition to the powder room. A piece of artwork from the client’s collection was selected to finish off this one-of-a-kind powder room that harmonizes with the artwork that fills the home surrounding it. Why the judges love it: We love the gold finishes mixed with the dark elements. The pendant fixture is the perfect choice for the space. The stone the designer selected is simply stunning! PLATINUM WINNER Under 40 square feet
ADJ Interiors ADJ Interiors had 39 square feet of space to work with to make their client’s powder room full of glam. The space was long and narrow which made it challenging to maximize storage and give the powder room a sense of flow. The designer added pops of gold in the leaves on the soft-gray wall treatment as well as in the faucet and fixtures, like the “rock candy” cabinet handles and gold-and-glass sconces. The nearly six-foot-long vanity was custom built to maximize the space, extending only 18” at its deepest. The vanity includes two large side drawers for built-in storage. Lighting under the vanity gives another layer of detail. The designer combined all elements in the space to create a showstopping powder room that is glamorous and full of function. Why the judges love it: This elegant bathroom has a good mix of materials. We love the under-vanity lighting. The backsplash material with the wallpaper is stunning. Alspaugh Kitchen & Bath A disastrous plumbing installation prompted a full master bathroom remodel. Alspaugh Kitchen & Bath led the renovation making the tub the star of the show. The homeowners fell in love with a matte black freestanding tub bedecked with strapping and rivets. Industrial-style fittings with matte black accents were selected for the faucets and tub filler to complement the cast-iron tub. The polished nickel finish on the fitting and sconces provide a punch of glam. The long vanity features double sinks with concealed medicine cabinets mounted flush inside framed mirrors. Two wall cabinet towers bookend the mirror frames to provide the owners with plenty of storage. Under-cabinet lighting beneath the vanity accentuates the extra tall toe space and tulip feet. The mosaic pattern of the tile floor resembles chain link, while the gray-and-white marble material amps up the luxury factor. White marble lines the walls in wainscot fashion contrasting with gray marble baseboard, chair rail and accent pencil trim. The marble wall continues into the shower, which is enclosed by a frameless low-iron glass door that has been coated to reduce water spotting. Industrial style and refined materials mix in this unique bath that is full of charm, luxury and comfort. Why the judges love it: This bathroom shows a good use of space. The medicine cabinets are nicely done, and we like the use of furniture legs on the vanity. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources. Photography by Anne Matheis.

Walnut Lily Designer Walnut Lily took on the challenge of creating a luxurious guest bath experience for their clients. The homeowners’ vision was to blend a moody, masculine vibe with a warm and welcoming feel in just under 100 square feet. The bathroom door is directly across from the lower-level entrance, so the bathroom needed to look like a work of art instead of a bathroom. The dramatic, rich blue tile on the shower wall is a show stopper. The frameless glass door and golden grout showcase the herringbone pattern of the tile and complement the brushed gold hardware. The designer continued the herringbone tile on the 9’ high wall behind the vanity, which features a matte gold framed mirror with a dimmable light and defogger. The handsome vanity is finished in an antique gray wood tone and has clean lines and brass trim. The vanity also features a built-in charging station, which is perfect for party guests. A privacy niche for the toilet area displays artwork from a local artist. Why the judges love it: The designers really took house guests into consideration with all of the added touches. The tile work is phenomenal, and the grout color really makes the blue pop. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources. Photography by Triple R Photography LLC.

ADJ Interiors The homeowners were seeking a dramatic look for their small powder room but didn’t want to overwhelm the room’s 25-square-foot layout. ADJ Interiors struck the perfect balance between size and style by pairing beautifully bold faux finish marble walls with a simple walnut vanity. The contrast of the two helps to create depth and drama while maintaining a sense of calm and tranquility. The vanity features slabbed doors and a quartzite counter. The floating mirror flanked with crystal sconces have a minimalist feel to complement the statement walls. Daring and timeless, the bathroom now packs a visual punch. Youtopia Designs and Home Maintenance Solutions This 30-square-foot powder room was in need of a refresh, and the family’s lively and colorful personalities provided plenty of inspiration for Youtopia Designs and Home Maintenance Solutions. The designers chose a matte porcelain tile that simulates Calacatta marble for the flooring, which helped neutralize the matte black picket tile that lines the bottom half of the walls. A sumptuous floral print wall mural covers the top half of the walls brightening up the small space. The mural serves as the statement piece and is accentuated by the lacquered turquoise vanity. There was no mirror prior to the renovation, so the designer placed a ceiling mounted mirror in front of the window, which still allowed for natural light to flow into the room. Textured glass pendants illuminate the vanity and light up the colorful aspects of the space. Why the judges love it: The placement of the mirror in front of the window was a smart design decision. THE THRILL OF THE HUNT Maggie Jewell, owner of MKS Designs, will go to any length to find the one-of-a-kind piece or element that perfects a space.
By Barb Wilson Photography Anne Matheis Interior Design MKS Designs Builder Brokaw Renovation, LLC
When asked to describe what distinguishes her approach to interior design, the first word that comes to Maggie Jewell’s mind is “originality.” “Obviously, my job is to determine the clients’ personal needs and style, then help to create the beautiful, functional space they’re looking for,” she says. “But every project is unique. I never design the same space twice and will often encourage the client to consider new ideas and options.” Ensuring that her designs are fresh, distinctive and original is actually a passion for Jewell. An ASID Industry Partner, she admits to being an inveterate shopper—a “finder of things”—and will scour countless local sources, websites and estate sales for the exact fabric, pattern, paint color or furniture piece that will fulfill her vision. “It’s the thrill of the hunt,” she laughs. “Sometimes, I even lie awake at night thinking about it.” In fact, creative design is probably in Jewell’s DNA. She worked for several years with her mom, Mary Stieven, the founder of MKS Designs, acquiring the company six years ago when Stieven retired. Interestingly, the homeowner of

this story had known Stieven long before meeting Maggie at a function in late 2018. Whether fate or karma, their encounter seems almost predestined. Both women are busy mothers—Maggie a well-known interior designer with four youngsters, including a set of triplets; the homeowner a mother of five, soon to be an empty-nester and in search of a designer to renovate the spacious residence in Town and County where her family had lived for 15 years. The two clicked immediately, and plans began for a complete refurbishment of the home’s main level. When purchased in 2003, the five-bedroom two-story had been professionally designed in the traditional décor of the time—rather ornate and featuring a warm gold/ green/brown palette. Over subsequent years, however, the homeowner had “restyled things” herself, adding new items and, at one point, “tons of large red pieces. It was making me anxious,” she confesses good-naturedly. “All I wanted now was calm—and no more red!” Working together to achieve a more serene ambience,
Opposite page: A bold abstract, commissioned specifically for its location above the updated fireplace, lends a modern touch to the great room’s traditional styling. Formerly a wet bar, the architectural alcove at the right was converted to a serving area with a vintage mahogany buffet. This page: To make the voluminous great room feel “cozy” and functional, Jewell chose a soothing palette of light neutrals with blue accents. The comfortable seating arrangement features the owners’ reupholstered sofas, new wingback chairs in a cut velvet pattern, floral ottomans and an antique coffee table in glass and gilded iron. Maggie and her client decided on a color scheme of creams, soft greiges and blues, with natural elements to reinforce the tranquil aesthetic. The basic styling would remain traditional, combining new pieces with existing furnishings and possibly considering a few modern or mid-century touches to reflect the owner’s personality. Major alterations included refinishing the oak floors in the kitchen and hearth room and replacing the rest of the main-level flooring with wide-plank wood. The great room fireplace was refaced with marble, the kitchen was completely renovated and beams were added to the hearth room ceiling. All surfaces were repainted, new rugs, wallcoverings, fabrics and light fixtures were selected and the window treatments were modified. “Maggie is a master at combining patterns and color, and nobody does lighting better than she does,” the owner remarks. Photos of the completed project illustrate Jewell’s remarkable ability to interpret her client’s objectives. The overall effect is harmonious, soothing and inviting— precisely what the owner had hoped for. But what makes this gracious residence so extraordinary is the designer’s creative ingenuity as she gave each space its own uniquely personalized character. For example, the office is open to the entry foyer and showcases a handsome antique partner’s desk. Although a favorite of the owners, it was never a good height for the husband, who is quite tall. Rather than eliminate the piece, Maggie called on Custom Furniture Works to raise it. Now a comfortable height, the desk is enhanced Top: The main staircase was repainted and the treads stained to match the new flooring. A distinctive leather strap chandelier and scenic antique prints contribute to the ambience of the adjoining office, where the vintage partner’s desk was raised to a comfortable height for the husband. Bottom: New host chairs and seat cushions in a Schumacher velvet print were added, complementing the owners’ refinished dining ensemble and antique English china cabinet.

by a masculine Ralph Lauren leather strap chandelier and six gold-framed antique prints of trees for a hint of nature. Across the foyer, the formal dining room is furnished with the owners’ antique English china cabinet and refinished dining ensemble, a 9-foot mahogany table with Chippendale-style chairs. Maggie added host chairs from Expressions, upholstered in a rich blue Schumacher velvet print, complemented by wallpaper and drapery fabric in Brunschwig & Fils’ “bird and thistle” pattern. Perhaps the room’s most intriguing element, however, is the ceiling, which is painted “haint” blue. Often used on porches in the South, this soft, water-like hue derives its name from folklore. Supposedly, haunts (or spirits) can’t cross water, and the color protects the occupants—in this case, the homeowners’ dinner guests—from misfortune. Dramatically lit by a bowed, floor-to-ceiling architectural window, the vast, box-beamed great room presented a challenge. “We wanted it to have a cozy feel,” Maggie explains, “a relaxing place for cocktails, conversation or just to read.” Reupholstered in creamy Jane Churchill fabrics, the owner’s traditional sofas are flanked by new wing back chairs in an elegant blue cut velvet pattern, with Schumacher floral ottomans and a vintage glass and gilded-iron coffee table completing the comfortable seating arrangement. Clearly a focal point, the wall above the newly refaced fireplace demanded special attention. Knowing her client was fond of a piece by St. Louis artist Mark Fetty, Maggie located the painter, who visited the house before creating the custom abstract now above the mantel. Formerly a bar area, the architectural alcove to the right of the fireplace was inset with a vintage Baker mahogany buffet and balanced on the left with a demilune cabinet and antique oil landscape. Fully remodeled by Beck/Allen Cabinetry, the kitchen revolves around a 10-foot work island with honed Santorini quartzite top, "Hague" navy cabinet base and a movable butcher block prep table at one end. The home’s overall décor theme was actually inspired by the Scalamandré fabric—an embroidered beige/ linen/navy/gold botanical print—on the swivel bar stools, and the pub-style lighting fixture was relocated from the lower-level pool table to the kitchen as another distinctive accent. The owners’ English trestle table and spindle-back chairs were refinished for the adjacent family dining area, which is backgrounded by textured faux bois wallcovering and two gold-framed reproductions of historical nature prints, supersized and hand-painted in navy, gold and silver. Serene in white and gold, the main-floor master bedroom was given classic French style by reupholstering the two Bergère chairs and ottoman in a soft blue, vintage silk and velvet damask. For a unique flourish, Maggie suggested embellishing the owner’s Empire four-poster with a traditional settee
in place of a bed bench, recovering the piece with a length of leopard print velvet her client had been saving for “just the right place” for years. Several Oriental foil landscapes emphasize the sense of calm, and a cloud-like John Richard ceiling fan encircled with gold ribbon is suspended from the deeply coffered ceiling. Thrilled with her home’s calming transformation, the homeowner enthuses, “Maggie is so much fun to work with! We really connected. And the only red left in my house is the dials on the kitchen range!” Resourceful, imaginative and attentive to every detail, Maggie Jewell definitely justifies her claim to “originality.” In her words, “When I revisit a home I’ve designed and it still feels wonderful, I know I’ve done the job right.” See stlouishomesmag.com for resources and additional photos.
Opposite page: When the owner requested a “French look” for the main-floor master, Maggie proved that serenity can still be glamorous. In place of a bed bench, she positioned a traditional settee in leopard print velvet at the foot of the owners’ Empire four-poster, adding a modern vibe with mirrored nightstands, Visual Comfort lamps and a cloud-like John Richard ceiling fan. Above: Une chambre très français! A pair of Bergere chairs, recovered in a soft blue silk and velvet damask pattern, the owner’s French bombé chest and a gold foil Oriental landscape complete the bedroom décor.

hen the Glynn family moved to the St. Louis area from Indiana nine years ago, they were drawn to the variety of design styles found in Kirkwood’s homes and neighborhoods. They purchased an existing two-story home, and the wife, Kim, set about making it their own. As the Glynns planned a dream home that would satisfy their desires for a fun, casual space where they and their teenage sons would enjoy entertaining friends, Kim “wanted to be super involved in everything,” she says. They found a lot within the Kirkwood city limits and engaged architect Darryl Labruyere, president of DL Design and builder Monte Herring of the Herring Design & Development team to bring their dreams to fruition.

"The homeowner knew she wanted the home to be a modern farmhouse style, so we began thinking of ideas based on that," says Darryl Labruyere. "There are many shapes, angles and slopes that work with farmhouse design, especially vertical lines on the exterior. All these aspects came together in this project to create both beautiful curb appeal and functional spaces." The homeowners wanted a home that embodied easy living with a seamless flow between indoor/outdoor spaces. “I’ve got a fun, kind of an eclectic personality, and I wanted the house to reflect that,” Kim explains. “I like the clean lines of a modern farmhouse, but I didn’t want it too modern or too ‘farmsy.’ I like a lot of different design styles and overall, I wanted to be creative and have something
different than everybody else.” They were also mindful of universal design so they could remain in the new home for many years to come. She drew inspiration “by following really, really good designers on Instagram who are fun and a little edgy. I feel we ended up with a home that reflects that but that’s also cozy and welcoming.” In the kitchen, Kim loves white and believes it’s a timeless choice for kitchen cabinetry and tile. She didn’t, however, want an all-white kitchen. Inspired by Instagram photos, three selections for cabinetry were made—the moody black (Benjamin Moore’s Soot) for cabinets along the sink wall, crisp white for cabinets on the opposite wall and a rift, cerused oak for the base of the island and a beam above the stove alcove. Walls are finished
Above: Benjamin Moore Soot paint provides the moody black for the cabinets on the sink wall, crisp white cabinets line the opposite wall, and a rift, cerused oak provides the base for the imposing (6 feet x 8 feet) island. Shiplap walls, an oak accent beam over the stove alcove, and distressed wood barstools with tan leather seats bring a rustic vibe. A walk-through pantry is located behind the wall housing the Wolf range. Right: This custom black-and-glass piece is the only upper cabinet in the entire kitchen. The cabinet’s convenient location close to the Sub-Zero wine storage was a must-have for the new home.

in white subway tile and white shiplap. "Windows and natural light were important to the homeowner and to this design," adds Darryl. "The windows in the kitchen as well as the dormer windows in the great room provide excellent lighting. And at night when the lights are on, the home is stunning from the street." The kitchen holds no upper cabinets except one, and that’s by design. “I really wanted to take advantage of the view outside, so almost 90 percent of the back of the house is windows and doors,” says Kim, noting windows compose almost the entire wall above the sink. On the opposite wall, she continued the airy, open feel by commissioning a custom blackmeatl and glass cabinet (the kitchen’s only upper) for the space near the Sub-Zero wine storage. Glassware for the bar area is stored on the lower shelf, and decorative pieces are displayed on upper shelves. A walk-through pantry is located behind the wall housing the Wolf range and provides substantial storage. One of the homeowners' favorite aspects of the home is the flow from the kitchen through the dining area into the great room, where they selected a porcelain tile to clad the 2-story fireplace. “I wanted hot rolled steel, but it was really hard to source,” says Kim. After considering several options, she stumbled upon the porcelain at The Tile Shop. A large area of the white shiplap wall underneath a steel railing proved to be a challenging space for choosing just the right artwork. “I wanted something unique here, because I like to be

The two-story great room with its 20-foot ceilings called for materials and furnishings with heft and substance. different,” says Kim. Inspired again by Instagram, she used rope and reclaimed wood to create a distinctive 7-foot x 6.5-foot “frame” to highlight a reproduction of Leonard Nones’ iconic, early 1960s photo of a man underwater. Some of the same mix of natural and industrial elements carried into the primary bath, where they also wanted both masculine and feminine aesthetics. The sink wall is charcoal marble tile, which lends a masculine air, while the white and gray marble floor features “flowers” of black marble hexagons placed in a random pattern. Striking Restoration Hardware light fixtures flank custom mirrors made by Nathan Hudspeth of Alliance Home Solutions. Rift, quarter-sawn white oak lends a rustic vibe to the vanity, topped with the same honed Danby marble in White Mountain used in the kitchen. Kim also brings her eclectic sensibility to the first-floor office. She says green was a popular color during their 2018 building process, and she hit upon Benjamin Moore Caribbean Teal, painting the walls, built-in cabinetry and the ceiling in the coastal hue. The Lucite desk, while ultra-modern, is perfect in the space and allows both the painted walls and indoor/outdoor black and white rug from Target to command attention. Kim loves mixing high-end/budget-friendly pieces, noting the Devon & Claire Avery hot pink armchair came from a big-box store. The outdoor spaces embody easy living as well. Grass surrounding the minimalist hardscaping and rectangular pool is inspired by California-style poolscapes, bringing a coastal vibe to the Glynns’ backyard. A fireplace, TV and several seating and dining areas provide multiple spaces for relaxation and entertaining friends. Selecting each design element—from drawer pulls to downspouts—was a painstaking process. “It was a ton of work, but I had a lot of fun doing it,” Kim comments “I would do it all again in a heartbeat.” Architect Darryl Labruyere agrees that the work was worth the final product. "Every time I drive by this home, I smile," he says. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources and additional photos.
Combining masculine and feminine touches in a minimalist, timeless primary bathroom was a priority. Charcoal marble wall tile provides visual substance to the room, while black marble hexagon “flowers” placed in a random pattern in the white and gray floor add a feminine touch. Striking Restoration Hardware light fixtures flank custom mirrors by Nathan Hudspeth of Alliance Home Solutions. Honed Danby marble tops the vanity constructed of rift white oak with a bit of cerusing, a wood finishing technique that adds contrast. Opposite page: In the primary bedroom, animal print pillows add fun and flair to the crisp white linens. A Wayfair leather bench sits at the foot of the canopy bed from One Kings Lane. Placing the primary bedroom on the first floor was a part of the homeowners’ long-term thinking of aging in place in this home, plus it provides extra privacy away from children and overnight guests.

VACATION VISION
By Lucyann Boston Photography by Kim Dillon
Working alongside a team of top-rate professionals, these homeowners created their Colorado dream vacation in their own back yard.
Landscape Design / Poynter Landscape Architecture & Construction Home Architecture / RiverFront Design & Sales, LLC Poolhouse Architecture / Jeff Day & Associates, LLC Builder / M. Simeone Contracting and Rader Construction
It all began with the land; a five-acre tract in Hillsboro, where Mary and Rich Patterson loved living and raising their two daughters, Sydney and Stella. The property encompassed a field and surrounding woods. When they first viewed it, Mary saw potential. Rich worried that it was too flat. The setting was important. The couple planned to build a dream house that reflected their love of ski trips to Keystone in Colorado and multi-generational family gatherings at Branson’s Big Cedar Lodge. They were not thinking small. They had in mind a massive project. It was important that it settle into the land and look like it belonged. Mary’s vision and confidence won out over Rich’s skepticism. They purchased the land in 2011. In the years they owned the land and waited for the right time to build, they thought on the stone and timbers they hoped to incorporate, the ample space they
needed as they welcomed their growing daughters’ friends into their home and their love of entertaining large gatherings of family and friends, particularly from their church. They wanted space both indoors and out. As plans for the house got actively underway three years ago, Rich turned to the internet to look for the right landscaper to incorporate the house with the land. The couple envisioned an outdoor space surrounding the house that would be in harmony with the Arts and Crafts style of the dwelling and encourage interaction with the outdoors. From the beginning, they wanted to surround their house with the natural, outdoor, mountain ambience that they loved in Colorado. “We wanted to do the outside at the same time we did the inside,” sums up Mary. After considering several options and looking over suggested designs, the couple felt that Poynter Landscape Architecture & Construction and designer Bob Wilhelm understood what they

wanted. It proved a choice with benefits well beyond a swimming pool and plants. First, Bob understood the scale and feel of the project. At the entrance to the home, he designed a mountain scene complete with an elevated hillside and rocky waterfall dotted with water-loving iris, black-eyed susans, orange butterflyweed and butterfly bushes. The pool he created is huge, holding a volume of water that triples that of most large backyard pools. “When I saw the preliminary drawing, the scale seemed all wrong,” recalls Drew McGrail, general manager at Poynter. “I was assured it was not. I actually went out and measured to make sure.” The scale was right. “We were building a resort,” Drew concluded. Yet, with undulating walls that look graceful rather than massive, it fits naturally into the landscape. Enhanced by plant-softened stone outcroppings that echo the curves of the pool and stone steps that alter elevations, it appears as a watery oasis in a woodland clearing. That feeling is augmented by the selection of plants that accent the garden beds surrounding the pool. In the spring cultivated red buds such as diminutive “Little Woody” and less familiar white blooming redbuds, accent the space and reflect the native redbuds dotting the woods. At Mary’s request, Bob created a design specifically incorporating a large dogwood that existed when the couple broke ground on the project. Golden black-eyed susans (Rudbeckia) “Goldsturm,” more disciplined cousins of the wild black-eyed susans that bloom naturally at the edge of the clearing, bring bright color to the summer landscape and tie the garden to the woods. Graceful grasses ripple in the wind from spring through fall and blend the pool area with the clearing. The Poynter landscape plan focused on plants that were reliable in St. Louis and having the garden surrounding the pool at its peak during the summer.

A high tech fire pit came into the mix with gas logs that can be turned on and off with a signal from either Rich or Mary’s phones. The overflow infinity lip of the swimming pool provides a waterfall-like view for guests gathered around the firepit. While they were comfortable with the pool and the landscaping, Mary and Rich were wrestling with the finishes for the interior of the house that would turn the stone and timbers into home. Bob suggested they talk with Kim Taylor-West, who heads the K Taylor Design Group in Frontenac. He had worked with Kim on other projects and thought she might have the vision the couple was looking for. There was instant rapport. “We had designed everything the way we wanted it,” says Mary. “Kim made it all look beautiful.” One project remained: the outdoor kitchen and pool house. “We were stuck on the outdoor kitchen,” Mary says. “We didn’t know what we wanted, how big we wanted it and how to finish it. We knew we didn’t want it outside the lower-level door. Bob said, ‘Why don’t we talk with (architect) Jeff Day’ and it all went perfectly from there.”

Jeff’s first step was to talk with the couple about how they wanted the backyard to function “and get those things designed in and from there make sure it was an attractive design with the timbering and stone to get the mountain home, Colorado resort feeling. The pool was large; the pool house had to be in balance.” The structure features three separate areas: a permanently roofed, open-air kitchen on one end and a living room-like space with a huge stone fireplace and large-screened TV on the other. The two are linked by an open-roofed dining room centered with a massive table created from beams left over from the pool house. Designed and constructed M. Simeone Contracting and Rader Construction, the table can easily seat 14 and handsomely reflects the Arts and Crafts detailing of the house. Walbrandt Technology added a sound system to allow music to flow through and unite all the outdoor spaces. Because the pool house is across the pool from the main house, it was important that the outdoor kitchen be self-sufficient. As well as a large grill, it includes a deep sink, dishwasher, refrigerator drawers and plenty of Beck Allen, all-weather cabinets well-stocked with everything needed to throw a dinner party. There is no need to make continual trips back and forth to the house. Kim suggested an island where Rich and Mary can pull up tall chairs “if it is just the two of them on a Wednesday night.” Constructed of Fantasy Brown Suede granite by SS Stone in Hillsboro, the stunning island includes a built-in trough sink that can be used for clean-up or food prep but also doubles as a place to ice-down drinks for large gatherings. While beautiful, “everything can be cleaned up with a hose,” Kim says. A lovely, large bathroom with detailed tile work that reminds the

Pattersons of vacations in Turks and Caicos adds to the resort-like feeling of the structure as does the natural looking outdoor shower. The shower, Mary laughs, was added when she ended up with an unused shower pan originally meant to be part of a dog-washing area in the house. With all the incredible design features in the landscaping and pool house, a small suggestion from Kim is one Mary is happy for nearly every day in the summer. “She said, ‘Mary, we need to put in a washer and dryer. You don’t want to be lugging armloads of towels back and forth to the house every day,’” Mary recalls gratefully. “I am a very practical designer,” Kim quips. Leafy meadow phlox is imperiled in the state of Missouri, as Missouri serves as the eastern-most range for this subspecies. This subspecies exhibits pyramidal-shaped, pinkish-purple flower panicles and blooms from August to October. In the wild, it typically grows in moist meadows, low woods and riverbanks. This attractive native species may also appeal to home gardeners. Meadow phlox
is an excellent summer-blooming plant for the perennial border, cottage garden, wildflower meadow or native plant garden. It is attractive to butterflies, birds and hummingbirds. Meadow phlox can be easily grown in moderately fertile, medium moisture, well-drained soil in full sun to light shade. It prefers moist, organically rich soils in full sun.

INSIDER
The Poolside EXPERIENCE With almost 30 years of industry experience, Ray Holt, President of Baker Pool Construction, gives us an insight into design both in and out of the water. Edited by Moe Godat Photography by PMP Images
Expert Consultations: We do our best to be a bit more of a consultative/educational sales process in lieu of trying to sell the benefits of any particular product, so clients can expect candor. This process is completely immersive. It takes time, effort, energy and money. It is our intent and purpose to best educate our clients so they may make the best decisions for the future use of their backyard. With marketing, advertising and a bit of spin, it can be difficult as a consumer to differentiate reality from painted reality. We do our very best to confront that. Shape and Size Considerations: The shape and size of a pool becomes a clear picture in time based on a plethora of inputs. Desired use will always carry the most weight, but beyond that there are a multitude of considerations. The architectural style of the
56
AUGUST 2021 STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM
home, the natural environment surrounding the home and the natural grades of land that exist in the yard all play a role in the ultimate shape and size. Fire and Water: Fire and water belong together, in the right circumstances. In a four-season environment, it can extend the enjoyment of an outdoor area by months. Adding a firepit near your pool area almost seems like a no-brainer. Soaking it Up: Hot tubs can be amazing, but the intricate understanding of all of the pros and cons is again highly important. Concrete hot tubs have become a main staple along with a concrete pool. Self-contained hot tubs have been in the industry for ages. This can be perhaps the singular hardest decision between form and function. Concrete hot
tubs are manufactured on site and can be stunning additions to a pool environment. They do give way slightly to the function of a self-contained hot tub, not only in its efficiency, but in its ergonomics. A self-contained hot tub, while slightly winning the race of efficiency and function, loses by a nose in the aesthetic environment. Dive In: In our own personal experience, a diving board was a great source of entertainment for our children and their friends with hours upon hours of use. However, a diving board requires certain elements of depth and dimension. It is important to remember the majority of the time most people spend in a pool is typically wading in the shallow end. As a result, in order to maintain an ample shallow area, diving pools by nature are considerably larger.
Adding Slides: There have been some newer options come to market over the last decade that lend themselves to a bit more appealing slide versus the traditional freestanding slides that were a staple for years. Most modern slides we install are to achieve a bit more of a built-in look. Outside Structures: Structures such as pool houses and pavilions can vary significantly in price. Some can be, perhaps, just a roof with a fireplace and television on one end with a seating area in the middle. Some can be versions of a small home with a kitchen, bathroom, living rooms, etc. Depending on the complexity of intended use, we provide the names of a few local architects. If/ when a second designer gets involved in the form of an architect, there can often be some back and forth between the architect and our company on final design. The single most important factor is the timing required to complete all of the initial design work. Setting the Landscape: I would certainly encourage homeowners to work with a professional landscape designer. Over the course of the last 15 years, we have developed our own landscape design and installation services in an attempt to keep the process as streamlined as possible. A landscape designer may have an amazing vision for an area of the pool decking that can completely enhance a project. Or vice versa, our design team may give some great insight into an area outside of the pool and deck that can be highly unique. Collaboration certainly achieves the very best results when the design professionals take pride in what they do. Taming Technology: I believe technology is a double-edged, very sharp sword. It has certainly had some positive influence in our industry. Automation, for instance, allows for calibrating the necessary run time to keep a pool clean and clear, saving a significant amount of energy if done appropriately, all while controlling your pool and features from your phone, which leads to the other side of the blade. The disposable psychology in which that device alone has influenced manufacturing in our culture is far from insignificant. I walked up on a 16-17-yearold pool just a couple of weeks back, and it was obvious to me the pool still had the original pump. Most appliances were built to last back then. Now, we consider ourselves quite lucky if we can get a seven year average for a pool pump. As a steward for our industry, our lives and our culture, I feel it would be remiss to avoid the truth of this. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

BEFORE & AFTER
ALL THAT GLITTERS Byzantine influences and old Hollywood glamour fuse in this luxurious bathroom made of precious metals and antique glass.

Styles come and go, but gold will always captivate, albeit through different shades, cuts or intensities. The precious metal has been around for ages and has symbolized everything from the mighty wealth of countries to an individual’s cultural influence. Designer, Ken Stuckenschneider, and owner of Stuckenschneider Decoration & Design tapped into the Midas touch to create an element of interest. But he also created a touch of novelty, casting the shiny and glistening material as the leading star of this old Hollywood-inspired bathroom.
The bathroom’s sparkle offers an emotional impact. Guests may want to linger longer and relax a while in this essential room to the household. Here, elaborate custom mosaic tile patterns of polished white and yellow onyx, Giallo de Sienna, and brilliant white Thassos marble adorn the walls. There is a cast iron tub incorporating the materials, too, while hand-hammered pewter and gilt faucets bolster a Byzantine meets old Hollywood allure. Ken added a large oculus window that looks out onto gorgeous gardens surrounding the
abode. But the window also beckons the viewer to peer inward to the house’s interior. “Architecture leads and design follows is my design mantra,” says Ken, who explains that rooms should have robust architecture structures first and afterward a layering in of designs can follow. “One of my specialties is finding a pathway in the house to decorating, making design choices feel purposeful and not random decoration.” The purpose behind this glittering bathroom is to highlight the overall aesthetic of the home. Look at the vaguely rounded tops of the bathroom doors, says Ken, and visitors can spot the subtle gestures to West Coast living. “Built in the 1940s, this house has a quality that brings to mind a mini version of the Beverly Hillbillies’ mansion. Because it was built after World War II, the home has this American glamour look to it popularized by Hollywood films during the period.” This, plus the homeowner always wanted to live in California, and reaching back to classic Hollywood makes the most design sense. “I take the best from every period to create something timeless with my designs,” he says, “I wanted to help the bathroom withstand the test of time.” Hence, Ken also explored antiquity for his muse. The mosaics may give away the Mediterranean influences the most, yet vintage Italian hand-blown light sconces also point to the Classical periods captured. Nearby an onyx wall night-light recessed into the sides of the bath likewise enhances the glitter and glow of the bathroom. Centered in the vaulted mosaic-covered ceiling is a shower steam room interior with a cold-water plunge shower, a special feature rarely found in domestic bathrooms.
Balancing out the splendor of the surroundings, antique glass is layered among regular mirrors to cut done on the sheen, so the eye isn’t completely overwhelmed. Today, gold is highly prized for its ability to withstand the ravages of time—gold maintains its finish well. Nevertheless, perhaps the quiet grandeur, offset through moments of release and a relaxed kind of style, will make this St. Louis bathroom not only the most gorgeous but the most everlastingly beautiful. BRIGHT IDEA
Playful and PRACTICAL
Designing a bathroom space just for the kids will let your creativity shine. Bright colors and fun patterns combine with functional storage solutions to create a bath your kids will go crazy for! By Melissa Mauzy

3 1. Bold Black and White By Colordrunk Designs. This bathroom was designed as a Jack-and-Jill bath for two young girls. The designer went bold with the pink vanity (Benjamin Moore Pink Ladies). To break up the bold color, the designer chose a feminine Quadrille wallpaper custom colored in black and white. 2. Sense of Fun By Studio 511. This children's bathroom has playful wallpaper and a custom designed vanity that integrates into the wainscot around the room. Located in the Rosario Candela Building on Park Avenue, the children's spaces required efficient, age-appropriate design—without neglecting a sense of fun. 3. Sparkle and Fun By Chambless Hall Design Build. This little girl’s bathroom is filled with sparkle and fun. The designer used her favorite colors, pink and purple, combined with feminine shapes and details to make her bathroom feel special and unique to her. The quartz countertop has small crystal flecks in it to play off of the crystals on the wall sconces.

4. Nautical Style By D’Asign Source. Located adjacent to a bunk room, this nautical bath appeals to kids and adults alike. Beadboard wainscoting, a custom painted Kohler Brockway 36” trough sink, and rope mirror complement the Ralph Lauren sailboat wallpaper in the bunk bath. The floor is a timeless white porcelain hexagon tile, and the sconces are a nautical boat theme style. 5 Fun and Functional By Love Your Room. The homeowner has three young girls, and they all share this bathroom. The designer wanted to make it a fun whimsical room for them without being overly themed so they would not outgrow it quickly. The Brewster Buttercup Turquoise Flower wallpaper brought in a beautiful punch of color, coordinating well with the soft white touches and polished nickel finishes; a little playfulness to put the "fun"back in functional!

6. Pretty in Pink By Delpino Custom Homes. This "pretty in pink" little girls bathroom was such a fun space to create for the homeowners daughters. The double vanity features brushed brass fixtures, Little Palms Wallpaper by The Blush Label, pink floral vanity mirrors and pink honeycomb vanity knobs. With plenty of storage and countertop space, this bathroom is the perfect area for the girls to primp and play. 7. Crazy for Color By Christie May, Rockwell Interiors. This space was created for brother and sister, who wanted a fun bathroom that was gender neutral. The client wasn’t afraid of color, so the designer painted the vanity a happy Kelly green, which pops off the black-and-white star patterned Japanese made floor tile. Details include modern fixtures and whimsical art as well as a recessed medicine cabinets for additional storage for each child. 8. Playful Design By Phillip Smith General Contractor. When the homeowners were building their vacation home, they wanted to create a space for everyone. Designed for the grandchildren, this playful bathroom has double, vintage-inspired wall-mounted sinks with a colorful red exterior. A tile border adds playfulness with a handpainted fish border.

A Harmonious Home Balancing out the asymmetry in a master bedroom led to the creation of this jewel box of a sitting room.
By Michelle Mastro Photography by Megan Lorenz
Apart perhaps from the carnival funhouse, homes should avoid lopsided surfaces, slanted walls and other oddities that throw off the equilibrium of any given space. Laura Lee, owner and lead designer of Laura Lee Home, found herself nurturing the design balance of a home whose master bedroom had needed an update. “We wanted to elevate the sophistication of the master bedroom, making it more sophisticated and a space that was ours,” recalls homeowner Susan Brown. But what started out as a simple refresh and renew project morphed into evening out the architectural features that threw off the room’s symmetry. Tending to this project became of utmost paramount. In fact, without proper balance, a room can make inhabitants

feel unwelcomed. “The bedroom was so asymmetrical that you walked in and you just wanted to leave. The bed was crammed on one side of the room. It just didn’t feel right,” explains Laura. To usher in balance, they thought to add another window. Unfortunately, their room’s window had been discontinued. Undeterred, Laura turned to the sitting room when the husband, Roger, realized a copy of the window existed there. “It was a crime of opportunity,” she jokes. This space, however, was also asymmetrical. So, she and the homeowners had the bright idea of not only removing the window in the sitting room but allowing this new vacant space to afford an opportunity to insert additional evenness. Thus, Laura would work her magic to transform two uneven rooms into delicately balanced retreats.

“The homeowners had the bookcases made in the sitting room so that we had two bookcases flanking the fireplace. This covered the absence of the window,” she says. The couple liked the idea of using navy blue paint and other dramatic touches. “The inspiration for the color palette— Susan has really good taste—were the fabrics used in the room.” The pillows are silk fabric with shades resembling watercolors. Laura added blue drapery and modern wing chairs upholstered in green velvet to add a dash of modern charm to the space’s rather traditional tone. “We layered the lighting by adding a trio of sparkling crystal sphere light fixtures and brass picture lights over the bookcases—all on dimmers. Upholstered ottomans tuck under the console turned bar. To add dimension, we suspended black and white framed birch trees from polished nickel chains.” Varieties of blues and greens intermingle here, while elsewhere in the house saturated oranges pair nicely with the cooler tones. The bathroom’s wallpaper is a vibrant orange with white floral details. “Orange and blue are opposites on the color wheel, so they balance each other really well.” But Laura’s quick to add that not everything in the home is perfectly even. Laura loves mixing different hardware finishes to offer a unique look. “I really like a mix of things. We kept the couple’s existing chrome faucet in the master bathroom, for example, and then we just did a little acrylic and chrome pull. The chrome vanity was warmed up with brass and glass pendant lights and the gold-leafed mirror. When you mix things like that, it just looks like the style is more evolved and feels collected.” Sometimes, building harmony in the home means understanding when to strike a balance and when to celebrate a contrast. CLASSIC OR CRAZE
Are Bidets Better? Bidets have long been a staple overseas, but they’ve gained popularity in the States since the toilet paper shortage of 2020. As the pandemic (hopefully) draws to a close, will bidets remain or be flushed away? Edited by Moe Godat Photography courtesy of Henry Kitchen & Bath
Classic
I believe that bidets are a classic in design. They have been a standard in Europe for many, many years and should be a standard in the United States as well. They are quite refreshing and so easy to use. Tom Manche, Tom Manche Interiors, LLC. While bidets have long been popular in other countries in the world, they never quite caught on here in the United States. That all changed with the great toilet paper shortage of 2020! A bidet seat is a great addition to any bathroom because they reduce the amount of toilet paper used, which is great for the environment and your wallet! We love bidets, and they are definitely not a craze! Julie Cullmann, Anne Marie Design Studio, LLC. Bidets are classic, but today it's not so much about the bidet as it is about the washlet. They are also easy to install and have many extra features that a standard bidet does not. Health-wise, they are great for reduced mobility individuals, pregnant women or others with health issues. Also, they take 1/8 gallon to clean you whereas it takes 37 gallons of water to make just one roll of toilet paper. Fun fact: bidet installations have been mandatory in Italy since 1975. Jamison Boyd, Henry Kitchen & Bath.

AUGUST 2021 STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM
Standalone bidets are not a new concept, but they have long been considered a luxury item as it's an extra expense and requires additional space. However, now that smart toilets and integrated bidets such as the Toto Washlet are being accepted as the norm, I can easily see them becoming a long term staple of even our more affordable bathrooms. Allison Dozier, Allison Dozier Interiors. They’re cleansing and comfortable for everyone at any age. Europe has been using the bidet for years, and it is a basic component to every bathroom. Go ahead and give it a try, I think you’ll agree that it’s cleansing, comfortable. Diane Rosen, Diane Rosen Interiors LLC. In new construction, I've had several clients incorporate integrated bidets into the main bathroom. A smart idea, whether new construction or a remodel, is to make sure you have an outlet installed by the toilet. That way, if you decide you want the features a bidet toilet offers, the outlet will make the installation much easier. An affordable option for the kids bathroom is to change the seat to a bidet seat. Gigi Lombrano, Gigi Lombrano Interiors.
Craze
What’s not to love about being pampered? We are putting them in high-end bathrooms, but also adding a GFI outlet for a future bidet seat in most of our remodels at all price points. Do I think it's the next must-have for every bathroom? No, but it is a nice luxury upgrade for any bathroom. CJ Knapp, Yours by Design. With so much square footage being designated to bathrooms these days, it was inevitable that bidets would make a comeback! Today's homeowner is looking for every luxury available, and why not a bidet? Just like enormous garden tubs, some will love them and others will find they go unused. The bidet will be one more thing to maintain and repair or replace if something goes wrong with it. I will call it a craze! Teddy Karl, The Great Cover Up. In my opinion, this is a pandemic-induced craze for Americans. I think the uptick in bidet purchases is a response to both the scarcity of toiletry supplies as well as people's increased awareness of personal hygiene needs. I have supplied more bidet seats in the last year than I have in the last decade. Mary Signorelli, Le Coeur Design.
