A Happy Place
Meet our esteemed panel of Baths of the Year judges
Once our daughter Sadye started dressing herself, even as a toddler, she always had her own sense of fashion. As far as she was concerned, if she liked it, she wore it. It made no difference if she was mixing plaids with polka dots, her reflection in the mirror told her she looked fabulous! Little did we know she was onto something. Fast forward to the present, current fashion and interior design trends are telling us to go with whatever makes you happy! Imagine waking up in the morning and you are surrounded by objects that you love. Some people would call this instant happiness. Once out of bed, a big decision awaits, what to wear. No worries, as far as dopamine fashion goes, put on whatever makes you happy with no regard to any kind of fashion rules. It’s all cool. It’s called the dopamine factor. Fashion was first to embrace this new trend with interior design hot on its heels. Dopamine is a chemical released in the brain that makes us feel good. So it only makes sense to jump on the dopamine train with the many homeowners featured in this issue. Our winning Baths of the Year are beyond dreamy (pages 18-28). Spa-like in every way, merely stepping into a steam shower or luxurious tub filled with rose petals would be enough to put your dopamine levels off the charts. Ever wonder why shopping is so much fun? Blame it on your brain because the shopping experience triggers the brain to release the feel good chemical dopamine. Included in this issue is our annual Source Book. Beware though, it may have you calling a St. Louis professional to help you with a new project raising your happiness level up a notch or two.
This year’s award-winning baths prove that design doesn’t have to compromise functionally to let personal style shine.
Enjoy, Suzie

Set In STONE Glenda Henneboehle of Stone Fabricators gives us insight into the use of stone and how it can be used to upgrade any bathroom. Edited by Maya Brenningmeyer Portrait photography by Colin Miller/Strauss Peyton Photography courtesy of Anne Matheis, Ben Vens, Alise O'Brien and John Skaggs
Endless Possibilities Stone Fabricators is a custom stone fabrication shop. We provide our residential and commercial clients with endless possibilities for all of their countertop needs. Even though countertops are our most popular service, we also provide customers with custom fireplace surrounds, shower walls, tub decks, wall cladding, furniture tops, tables and more. Taking the First Step When a client decides to use stone for their upcoming project, they will submit their drawings/plans to our salespeople for a preliminary quote. If the customer has not already selected their material, they may ask for a quote simply using budget numbers. However, our clients visit our showroom or one of our supplier's showrooms to search for the perfect material for their upcoming project. Once they have made their material selections they will then ask for a quote. When the quote is approved, we will turn the job in to our production team and we will template once everything is ready. Mix and Match There are so many different stone patterns and textures available. While it is quite common to mix textures, mixing different stones in one space can be challenging. We tell clients that it is up to their designer or their own personal preference when it comes to mixing different stones. Photography by Anne Matheis
Cutting Edge A mitered edge or eased edge, which offers a thicker look, is typically selected for the modern, clean-line bathroom design. Whereas, bathrooms with a traditional or timeless look often use an ogee edge which features concave and convex arches. Creativity in Small Spaces Bathrooms can showcase some very creative, beautiful stonework. If you can dream it, we can certainly do our best to make that idea come to fruition. We have extremely skilled craftsmen in our shop that put some of the most exquisite details on vanities, moldings, sculpted backsplashes, window casings and mirror picture frames. We hand-craft custom vanity sinks on a regular basis in our shop.
Photography by Spinbliss Photography
Conscious Combinations When selecting stone for your bathroom, it is important to be cognizant of the weight of the material. For this reason, it is most common to use the same material on the shower, vanity and backsplashes, but simply use tile in the same color for the flooring. The most common combination is using the same stone slab material for the vanity, backsplash, tub deck and shower pieces (jambs, curbs, bench and niches), however the possibilities are endless. PLATINUM WINNER Powder Rooms
Castle Design & WiseWorks Why the judges love it: This powder room is so elegant with tasteful colors. The space has great craftsmanship and the design is a unique play on the space.
In need of an update to match the timeless qualities of the Richmond Heights home, this formal powder room was given a fresh flair. The washstand vanity acts as the centerpiece of the powder room while providing style and function in the space. The vanity was enhanced with a natural marble top with a sculpted valance to tie into the curvilinear base and shelf on the vanity. A major change to the space, the detailed applied molding on all the walls is painted a beautiful blue. The two-leveled paneling was created between designer Castle Design and contractor WiseWorks. Paneling gives the room a calm appeal. An oversized frame mirror allows the sconces and chandelier to provide impactful light. The layered design elements provide a time-honored look and feel. PLATINUM WINNER Under 100 square feet
Chelsea Design Company
Why the judges love it: The designer was thorough when redesigning this space making inspirational and creative changes.
WINNER
Chelsea Design Company widened a small bathroom in the client’s 1940s farmhouse by 8” to make it more functional for the homeowners’ five grandchildren to use. The space was designed with ease of cleanability in mind using a hand-textured and glazed subway tile to wrap the entire bathroom including the tub walls and two accented marble niches. A playful polka dot patterned black-and-white penny hex tile was selected for the floor with dark gray marble skirting to accent the countertops, niches and trim pieces. The vanity allows for additional towel storage and features metal legs and oversized satin nickel ring pulls to make it feel like a piece of furniture. The designer extended the Calacatta marble countertop over the top of the toilet for more surface area to set items. A large medicine mirror was inset and framed in marble to allow more hidden storage. The vanity, crown molding and entry door are all painted Sherwin-Williams Rock Garden to keep the look cohesive and timeless. Finally, green crown molding encases a whimsical wall covering on the ceiling that resembles a childlike drawing. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources. Photography by Alise O’Brien Photography.

PLATINUM WINNER 100-130 square feet
Chelsea Design Company Why the judges love it: This primary bath flows so well, and the designer showcased true craftsmanship and warmth. We love the zero-entry shower and the framing around the shower doorway.
Serving as “his” bathroom in the primary suite of a 1940s farmhouse, the 104-square-foot bath was to be masculine and timeless while adding the ease of aging in place. A Victoria & Albert freestanding tub greets you as you enter the space designed by Chelsea Design Company. The tub is surrounded by wood board-and-baton walls painted in a Sherwin-Williams Foggy Gray to bring out the gray and blue undertones of the marble, and sits on an African marble basketweave tile floor for slip resistance. Wood plantation shutters in a walnut finish increase privacy in the tub area while matching other walnut elements in the room. Considering the potential need for a wheelchair in the future, the designer chose a custom floating walnut vanity. An adjustable chain was added to a treasured Phoenix mirror and mounted from the ceiling in front of an inset mirror that spans from backsplash to molding to reflect natural light. To increase storage, two medicine mirrors flank each side of the Phoenix mirror. Staying within ADA guidelines, the zero-entry shower showcases a Calacatta marble-wrapped glass shower door that transitions down to the marble skirting surrounding the rest of the room. An overhead rain-head and hand shower in addition to a wall-mounted shower head allow for maximum water coverage in ease of rinsing off. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources. PLATINUM WINNER 136-250 square feet
ADJ Interiors Why the judges love it: This bathroom is stunning. We appreciate all of the detail in the mill work and ceiling. We love the designer’s choice for the shower tile.
The goal for designer ADJ Interiors was to create a bathroom as glam and stunning as the homeowner herself. The starting point for the design was the Carrara marble floor tile and coordinating mosaic that the designer used to wrap the inside and outside of the large shower. The custom vanities by Centorbi Cabinetry are topped with shaped Carrara marble countertops and backsplashes using moldings to accentuate the mirrors and ceiling details. Flush mount ceiling fixtures on either end of the long, narrow space complement the large crystal chandeliers in the dressing rooms off of the bathroom. Polished nickel is carried throughout the space, including in the show-stopping tub and crystal sconces as well as a powered Roman shade in a silver shimmery fabric installed by Fusion Media Systems, who also installed lighting control throughout the bath. PLATINUM WINNER More than 250 square feet
K Taylor Design Group LLC & Bower Leet Design Why the judges love it: This is such a creative space, and we love the use of the unique, organic wood. The lighter floors balance out the rich finishes.
The primary bath designed by K Taylor Design Group and Bower Leet Design is one of the signature rooms in this new, custom modern home. The layout was designed to provide two large vanities with towers, a large shower and a spa-inspired ambiance. Mid-century-modern-inspired matte glass tiles extend 10 feet in the shower and frame the freestanding tub. The shower is flanked by a cosmetics vanity and built-in bench. Custom matching vanities are made with quartered figured Mozambique natural wood. The illuminated mirrors are mounted above a small elevated platform behind the faucets and feature defrost. The platform allows for discreet outlets and additional storage. Each floating vanity has a heated towel rack, sconces and floor illumination. The elliptical lines of the shower tile are repeated in the shape of the tub and faucet handles. Luxury details include polished nickel fixtures, heated floors and hidden pocket shades. GOLD WINNER Powder Room
Castle Design and Mitchell Wall Architecture and Design Why the judges love it: We love this fun and unique play on neutrals. The symmetry in this powder room is outstanding. The homeowners desired a powder room design that would “wow” guests and make them feel special. Castle Design layered neutral elements to keep with the understated color palette throughout the rest of the room. The “Drop System” sconces by Lindsay Adelman Studio add a bold statement and a little fun and whimsy. The dramatic gray and gold veins of the Neolith Calacatta Luxe Sintered stone material elevates the neutral-colored room and marries the finishes of the fixtures. An undermount white sink features a wall-mount faucet in brushed bronze. The aged brass and antique bronze mirror is the perfect mix of metals to complement the scheme, and the rounded edges offer curvilinearity to soften the space. The entire powder room is covered in a Phillip Jeffries Japanese paper weave giving warmth and texture. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources. Photography by Alise O’Brien Photography.
TIE GOLD WINNER Powder Room
Castle Design
Why the judges love it: The wall-mounted faucet is a unique touch in the powder room. We love the color combination in this tasteful, clean design.
Castle Design paid homage to the golden days of Hollywood in this glamorous powder room. A beautiful marble basketweave mosaic floor is complemented by black textured wall tiles and topped with a deco-inspired wallcovering. The elegant brass sink console is a centerpiece worthy of everyone’s attention. A striking brass floor length mirror reflects the dramatic space. The vanity mirror features a hand-forged metal frame finished in a lightly antiqued gold leaf. The scalloped edge design of the mirror is a focal point adding depth to the space. Brass accents, like the wall-mounted faucet, pair beautifully with the gold legs of the sink console. Visual Comfort sconces have a soft brass finish and clear textured glass putting the finishing touches on the sophisticated powder room. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources. GOLD WINNER Less than 100 square feet
Castle Design Why the judges love it: The designer nailed the look for a little girl’s bathroom, really thinking outside the box. The finishes make the space.
24 AUGUST 2023 STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM
The homeowners are tickled pink in this whimsical children’s bathroom. Castle Design set out to create a space that is both playful and chic relying on graphic patterns to infuse the small space with a big impact. The iconic Cole & Sons “Flamingoes” wallpaper steals the show. The cheerful pink print covers the walls while a scalloped brass mirror hangs over the soft pink vanity. Brass and acrylic hardware accent the space. A beautiful honed hexagon marble tile was installed on the floor to anchor the space and also is slip resistant. Soft white and gold sconces flank the oversized mirror creating a girly vignette. Timeless, feminine and stylish, this children’s bath will remain fresh and young for years to come. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources. Photography by Alise O’Brien Photography.
GOLD WINNER 100-130 square feet

Dashing Design by Elizabeth Why the judges love it: The designer did a great job of rearranging the space. The wet room concept is thoughtfully done.
Dashing Design by Elizabeth solved a space issue for these homeowners by extending their primary bath into their oversized bedroom allowing needed square footage for their dream wet room, hidden toilet space and double-bowl vanity. The total square footage increased from 69 square feet to 130 square feet. A custom lockable barn door with herringbone slats complements the herringbone on the feature wall and shower base. The blue herringbone was the basis for the overall design as the homeowners love the color blue. Each tile was hand laid. A transom window was added in the wet room and an existing window between the vanity was altered to allow more light. Custom cabinetry includes a custom raised height to accommodate the homeowners’ taller stature and by using an all-drawer approach the designer was able to maximize storage. The wife’s center drawer is equipped with electrical and compartments for storing hair tools. Recessed medicine cabinets also add quick storage. The two-person shower and soaking tub set-up is the homeowners’ ultimate luxury. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources. Photography by Anne Matheis.

Accent on Cabinets & Jeffrey Homes Why the judges love it: This bath is so beautifully and tastefully done. We love the undermount tub with the decking surface.
The homeowner desired lots of natural light in a timeless design. Accent on Cabinets and Jeffrey Homes took on the challenge to make sure all the elements of a luxury bath were part of the design while keeping the size modest. A galley bath layout was chosen to give the homeowners their wish to have a large shower and a soaking tub separate from the vanity. Using the same wood floor in the bathroom but setting it in a herringbone fashion adds a classic and elegant detail. The wood floor is also water resistant making it a unique choice for the bathroom. JCR Design Group
Why the judges love it: What a flawless design! The inlaid tile detail is exquisite.
Glass block walls and an awkward floor plan were a few items that needed to be addressed in this primary bath remodel. Designer JCR Design Group worked to give the homeowners a more efficiently designed and aesthetically pleasing space with ample storage and a larger shower. Relocating the vanities and reconfiguring and enlarging the shower allowed space for a large water closet, linen closet and laundry room. The large, pale aqua-blue-painted double vanity with a center tower was designed as a focal point opposite the French entry doors. A new freestanding tub is positioned under the arch window and vaulted ceiling. Wainscoting was added to decorate the tub space. A dated and leaky stained glass window in the shower was replaced with a clear glass window for another source of natural light. The large Carrara marble floor tiles accentuate the inset hexagon bordered “rug”, which takes center stage in the room. The shower walls coordinate with the marble floor, while the shower floor features a spliced pebble stone mosaic in darker shades of gray. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources. Mitchell Wall Architecture and Design & Castle Design Why the judges love it: This bathroom really meets the client’s needs with a forward-thinking approach. The mix of wood and tile is beautifully done.
The homeowner originally wanted to have two separate bathrooms, but as the design came together Mitchell Wall Architecture and Castle Design used the 275 square feet of space for the two baths to become one. The challenge was creating a shared bath that also allowed separation between users. Back-to-back vanities gave the client the division they desired while using the space effectively. The vanities were stained to match the wood flooring. The homeowner also wanted a large steam shower, soaking tub and plenty of natural light. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources. 32 AUGUST 2023 STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM
Furnishings and styling epitomize “our version of modern,” designer Kevin Grace says of the living room. he impact of COVID-19 motivated many of us to reassess our priorities. For Julie, a young wife and mother living in Chicago diagnosed with cancer during the pandemic, family became even more important. Considering their young family’s needs during Julie’s illness and with no immediate family in Chicago, Julie and husband Chris decided to move to St. Louis where Julie’s dad and stepmother reside. The decision has turned out well for the family, which includes two young children. Their first home, located in Creve Coeur, wasn’t ideal, however. Although large, it lacked character. “Everything in that house was so spread out, we joked we could never find our little guy,” Julie laughs, referring to their son. “In Chicago we lived in a threebedroom condo downtown, so we were very close to each other in the physical space. We missed having that closeness.” To help add some personality to the home, the couple called upon a longtime friend, designer Kevin Grace, to “zhuzh it up.”

A Chicago native, Kevin is now based in Los Angeles as the creative director for “The Kelly Clarkson Show,” where he helps create and design the look and feel of the Emmy Award-winning talk show. Kevin also maintains an active interior design firm and has created interiors for Clarkson’s personal home and other high-profile clients. Kevin first helped Julie and Chris with design for their cabin in Wisconsin years ago, so he knows their style. Kevin determined new furniture and window treatments would be the smartest use of budget for the St. Louis home. As the family waited for some items because of pandemic-related delays, Chris and Julie decided to build a new home. The new space would be smaller in footprint, allowing for the close proximity they yearned for, but incorporate the style of places they love—their Wisconsin cabin, Chicago’s energy and architecture, and the laid-back, Cali-cool vibe of the West Coast.
Designer Kevin Grace asked builder Doug Cohen to remove two walls originally flanking the stove so a stone wall could serve as the focal point for the kitchen. Kevin whitewashed the stone himself to tone it down and added open shelving. The rivets on the three metal pendants over the island reminded Kevin of the “L,” Chicago’s elevated train system, and provided a nod to the couple’s love of the Windy City. Counters are topped in Bianco Aspen quartz.

The cabinetry hides not only the refrigerator, but a walk-in pantry concealed by narrow French doors. “This is one of the design features that really makes this home stand out,” says builder Doug Cohen, who plans to incorporate the ‘cabinetry as entrance’ to the pantry in future building projects. Douglas Properties already had a home under construction in Creve Coeur about a mile from the couple’s first house. The two-story floor plan, with all the family bedrooms on the second floor, had been designed for the home’s corner lot, says Douglas Properties owner Doug Cohen. In addition, Doug says his firm, which has been involved in acquisition, renovation and construction of luxury homes and condominiums for decades, believes the key to a successful floor plan is to have two main-floor living areas, such as a living room and a hearth room. “We feel a nice-sized hearth room is an integral part of our designs,” he explains. “Generally, that’s adjacent to the kitchen and has a 12-foot-high or vaulted ceiling, lots of windows and a fireplace that make the room very inviting.” The open floor plan, with kitchen, hearth room and living room flowing together, was appealing to the couple, Chris says. “When you walked in the front door of our condo in Chicago, you turned and you could see all the rooms, living, dining, kitchen all in one,” he says. “The openness of this house reminds me of our condo.” An Emmy winner himself, Kevin brought his bold creativity to the project, immediately suggesting removing two windows flanking the stove in the kitchen. “There was already so much natural light coming into the room that we could lose those windows and do a wall of whitewashed stone with some open shelving, which gives the space a California beach vibe,” explains Kevin. “That wall was our jumping off point.”

Left: “We aged it up a bit,” Kevin says of his vision for the daughter’s bedroom. She is nine years old and loves art. “We did this fun, graffitied chevron wallpaper that looks like dripping paint,” Kevin explains. On the opposite wall, just visible in the mirror, Kevin and mom Julie affixed hexagon-shaped felt wall tiles around the room in an ombre pattern of blue, the daughter’s favorite color. Beloved stuffed animals are kept safe and snug in oversized baskets tucked under the bed. Bottom: For a five-year-old boy who loves the woods, the son’s bedroom features bunk beds perfect for building forts. On an opposite wall (not pictured) Kevin commissioned artist Debbie Standley to handpaint a section of wall to look like wood.
He utilized the same stone for the hearth room’s fireplace but left it in its natural state rather than whitewashing it. “The warm tones of the furniture in this room give a country cottage feel,” says Kevin. For the living room fireplace, however, Kevin specified a Spanish-influenced fireplace design which he finished in a cream stucco. The same stucco treatment was used for a boxy overlay to the kitchen’s vent hood. One of the kitchen’s most unique features is the opening to the pantry. “It looks like a solid wall of cabinets, but French doors open into a walk-in pantry and it’s like a whole other little world inside there,” says Kevin. Doug notes that the door design makes the pantry almost disappear. “That’s a feature that really makes this home stand out,” he says. An avid cook, Chris appreciates the large island topped in Bianco Aspen quartz. “I love being in the kitchen,” he says. One of Julie’s must-haves for the new home was an ‘amazing’ primary bathroom. “I wanted something very bright, clean, almost like a spa feel to it,” she says. Several iterations of bleaching the wood cabinets resulted in a lovely ‘his-and-hers’ feel for the bathroom. “The bleached wood felt a little more masculine for Chris, but the beautiful sconces and the rounded mirrors lean a little more feminine,” says Kevin. The designer selected an octagon-shaped tile for the bathroom’s floor and carried it into the shower floor. Subway

“We wanted to play off the beachy-type wood of the bed in the adjoining primary bedroom,” Kevin says of the decision to ‘bleach’ the cabinets crafted by Markus Cabinet. “I like to make spaces connect.” Julie specified a space for applying cosmetics: a trio of mirrors and ghost chair make her morning routine convenient. The Crate & Barrel floor mirror is the ‘big brother’ to the arched mirrors over the vanity.

Bottom: The subway tile extends from the shower past the glass doors to the wall behind the freestanding tub. “There was something industrial about this tile, but it also felt clean and cool,” says Kevin. “It also has a green tone to it which connects to the primary bedroom.” He dislikes using too many different types of tile in bathrooms and tends to select a few well-chosen designs and extend them across spaces. “I like to simplify tile and let the beauty and glam come out in other ways,” Kevin explains. Opposite page: Kevin says the design of the primary bedroom started in the couple’s first St. Louis home. “The windows in that primary were offset, so we made a whole wall of drapery panels to hide it,” Kevin says. In thinking of the design for the new primary bedroom, Kevin utilized the same green velvet drapery panels hung traditionally. “You really see the lushness of the green velvet in this room,” he says, and explains the brass cabinetry and lighter wood tones of the new four-poster bed were “no brainers in beaching it up a little.” A sculpted rug adds additional warmth and texture.
tile clads the wall inside the glass shower and extends to the wall behind the soaking tub. “Sometimes there is too much going on in bathrooms as far as tile goes,” says Kevin. “I like to simplify tile and let the beauty and glam come out in other ways.” Now healthy, Julie glows with pride walking visitors and guests through the home she and her family have created, with help from Kevin, Doug and the many talented artisans contributing to the home’s design, construction and finishes. Chris also loves its quiet peacefulness. “Everything is so chaotic in life, and this is our retreat,” he says. “As much as I love Chicago, there’s something to be said for the peacefulness here. Instead of sirens and horns, you hear the birds chirping.” “We are setting roots down,” Julie notes. “We wrote our names on the beams before they put up the drywall, and each of the kids got to pick out things for their rooms. After everything we’ve been through, having a place we all love has been really therapeutic.” See stlouishomesmag.com for resources and additional photos.

erhaps best known for Ted Drewes in the summer and the holiday lights of Candy Cane Lane in the winter, the community of St. Louis Hills offers one of the city’s most charming and desirable neighborhoods. Dotted with an eclectic mix of gingerbread-style homes from the 1930s to the 1950s, the quaint town centers around the beauty of Francis Park, an especially appealing attraction for families with kids. After moving to the area in 2006, Emily and Patrick McGinnis bought one of the last undeveloped lots in the neighborhood in 2018 so they could put down roots and raise their three children here. “When we built the house, our intention was to have our home look like it had always been part of the neighborhood from the outside, but with more modern interiors,” says Emily. “Our community is so special—it is a bit of a throwback. Our kids walk to school, grab lunch and snacks at LeGrand's and play in the park.” Interestingly, there was a bit of intrigue behind the location of the McGinnis home, with many neighborhood rumors as to why the land had never been developed, most of which revolved around the idea that there was a cave or bedrock underneath. “The rumors even caused us to hire an engineering firm to dispel that nothing was there,” Patrick says, “but the real reason was that, up until 2005, the property was owned by the house next door.” STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM AUGUST 2023

When the 5,200-square-foot build was complete, the couple enlisted interior designer Sara Weller, owner of Sara Weller Design, to begin working on the home’s four bedrooms, followed by the living room, a mudroom/laundry area and a basement that includes a family room, bar/game room, an office, a reading nook, a full bath, a home gym and storage space galore. “With three children in grade school, family is very much the center of this home,” says Sara. “So, I focused on identifying choices to establish a core design that would allow the homeowners to curate and add additional accessories and art over time that were meaningful to them as a family. As a result, the children’s artwork is embraced throughout the home alongside professional pieces.” The couple’s posh, hip personal style and love of color are reflected throughout the design. The designer and homeowners share an appreciation for bold prints and high-contrast colors—especially green—which led to a truly collaborative design process. “I love color, and working with Sara was so fun,” says Emily. “She got my passion for color and was able to integrate it into our home in an intentional way—playful and refined all at the same time.” With three kids, ages 14, 11 and 10—and an Aussie Doodle named Ginger—it was essential to create open spaces for people to hang out and a dining room to host big groups of friends and family. “When designing for an active family, the balance of form and function is always paramount,” says Sara. “Everything selected needed to withstand the demands of a young family but with a chic flair.”
In the foyer, a green Roger Oats herringbone wool runner imported from London creates an exciting first moment that welcomes you into the home and sets the tone for the design to come. “The statement is clear,” says Sara. “Color is at home here, and the conversation continues as you head into the living room, where a showpiece striped rug with a kaleidoscope of colors generates a major impact in the sitting area.” Building off this focal point, Sara’s space-planning strategy included a cozy conversation area with custom Chaddock loveseats upholstered in a chunky bouclé Pindler fabric accented with bright yellow Thibaut pillows. A whimsical pair of emerald geometric Fabricut ottomans at the fireplace complements the palette. “I love pattern and color,” says Emily. “I wanted a home with purposeful spaces that reflected who we are as a family— comfortable, fun, and welcoming. The rug in the living room was super fun to create in partnership with Sara.” Located on the main floor and off the covered deck, the connected mudroom and laundry area needed improved functionality and an upgraded personality that incorporated the spaces into the rest of the home. The mudroom was commonly used as the family’s primary entrance and required a landing space and additional refrigeration for the kids. The area also had to accommodate the family’s Aussie doodle, who needed a comfortable spot she could call her own. Emily, a life coach, wanted a dedicated office with an attractive backdrop for Zoom calls and virtual groups for her clients. STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM AUGUST 2023

With functionality requirements established, the form and personality came to life in many exciting ways. A new built-in dry bar featuring St. Louis-based True Refrigeration with matte black and gold accent drawer coolers brings stylish contrast to the locally made butcher block countertops, and a custom built-in doggie crate provides a conversation piece for the owners and a private den for the doodle. “Perhaps one of my favorite rooms in the entire house is Emily’s new workspace,” says Sara. “It brings a new spin on the adage that all work and no playful design makes for a boring home office. Harlequin wallpaper and a Nikki Chu area rug are gorgeous and powerfully feminine. Modern business demands a striking background for Zoom meetings—and this wallpaper delivers and establishes a clear visual tone.” Colors from the In the master bedroom, a dynamic Kelly Wearstler gold wall covering nods to Art Deco excess yet is counterbalanced with a folk art–inspired textured cotton chenille rug from Villa Nova. wallpaper are echoed in the bookcase, custom chair and ottoman, and sheer draperies with polka dots invite plenty of natural light without sacrificing style. “One of my favorite things about my office is all of the personal touches—kids’ art, some family pictures, books that have had an impact, the rainbow basket my mom made,” Emily adds. “It is definitely a fun place to work!” The unfinished basement involved a complete transformation that now includes a reading nook under the stairs with full-size bunk beds that are backlit and have hidden bookcases tucked inside. “It’s a pretty magical place to hang out and the first thing you see as you come down the staircase,” says Sara. Mirroring the initiation to the home’s main level, the entrance into the basement family room welcomes the children and their friends and establishes a space that can work for both adult and teen entertaining. Warm, gray-stained concrete throughout creates a modern feel that is brightened by a multi-colored rug to cozy up the main seating area. A large-scale contemporary chandelier makes a statement above the seating area, and matching wooden grid walls were added behind the TV area and at the side of the bar to add dimension to the massive space. “We wanted to build a house our kids enjoyed spending time in and inviting their friends to,” says Patrick. “It was also important to create spaces that would bring us together but also allow everyone to have their own space when needed.” “I enjoy how our family’s personality is evident in our choices,” says Emily. “It took a team effort to get it right, and we are so happy with the result. hen Phyllis Weidman arrived in St. Louis 30 years ago from Columbus, Ohio, she brought along a house full of furniture and a number of small green friends. They had names like “Paul’s Glory” and “Edge of Night” and they were tucked in a U-Haul truck of special possessions she and her husband Jim drove to their new home in Kirkwood. The move to St. Louis came about when the St. Louis Art Museum hired Jim as its new development officer. And Jim, who loved hostas and gardening almost as much as Phyllis, was more than happy to have them on board. Phyllis began her fascination with what is probably America’s favorite foliage plant when she joined a garden club in Columbus. A woman named Nancy Gill also was a member of the club. Nancy, who raised hostas, had a large hosta with rounded blue-green leaves, named after her. She introduced Phyllis to another friend, Handy Hatfield, who it turns out had a medium-sized, lime green hosta edged in chartreuse named after him. Phyllis was hooked.

The back yard of their new home, which covered a shady hillside, offered the perfect location to relocate their rooted friends. But it wasn’t easy. The rocky ground made digging a challenge. But rather than discarding the rocks they encountered, Phyllis and Jim saved them and incorporated them into garden beds. Little by little they claimed the ground and added retaining walls and pathway platforms where necessary. The couple also joined the St. Louis Hosta Society. “We got to know other people and see their gardens. You can go kind of crazy,” Phyllis says with a laugh. “You think, ‘Oh, I have to have that one’ and then you have to make the garden bigger. It can get out of control really quickly.” As Phyllis and Jim amassed their collection of approximately 300 hostas, they also developed long-term friendships. “We were both interested,” she explains. “We went places to see hostas and had couples from all over the country that we knew. I had a husband who would travel at the drop of a hat.” Phyllis has been a volunteer at the Missouri Botanical Garden for 26 years and was working in the Chinese Garden when the Garden’s hosta area began to undergo renovation. “They asked me to come down and take a

She has been using her volunteer talents with the Garden’s hostas ever since. Jim Weidman passed away three years ago, and Phyllis has decided that her garden is at its maximum capacity. But her interest in the shade-loving plants that come in every hue and pattern of green imaginable and range in size from shrub to miniature is on-going. She is currently president of the St. Louis Hosta Society and vice-presidentmember services of the American Hosta Society. “They (hostas) are always surprising you,” she notes. “One year, a plant will be big and glorious, and you will be amazed by it. The next year, the earth changes and it is not so big and glorious. You coddle it along. It is intriguing to me. Learning about hostas and how they grow has become a vocation for me.” Her secret to successfully growing beautiful hostas? “Good soil and lots and lots of water,” she advises. IMPROVING FUNCTION Redesign of 1920s home blends historic original with artistic new elements.
By Gina Parsons Photography by Karen Palmer Interior Design by Megan Temple Design Builder/Remodeler STL Property Pros
60 AUGUST 2023 STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM
Homeowners Casey Davison and Chris Jennewein wanted to use more of the space in their 1920s downtown Kirkwood home, while retaining the house’s historic charm. “In the old configuration we'd spend almost all our time in the family room/kitchen side of the house,” Chris explains. “By designating each half of the first floor to a single purpose, we felt we could make the home feel larger, and more comfortably host friends and family.” The couple began renting the home in 2014 and bought it in March 2019. When they decided to remodel, they hired designer Megan Temple to create and oversee the design. The project was completed in November 2022, Chris says. Before the remodel, the front of the house had been used as a dining room and office, Megan says. The redesign reimagined that area for relaxing and entertaining. From the front door, you enter a lounge, with a leather sofa and two leather chairs. Built-in storage and a window seat make it a combined sitting room and mudroom. A graceful ceiling arch that is original to the house separates the lounge from the living room. Versatile furniture that can be
easily moved allow the two rooms to serve as one when entertaining. At the back of the house, they removed a kitchen peninsula to open up the space, Megan says. They built kitchen cabinetry along the full back wall of the house. They also created a bar area, and transformed the former pantry into a coffee nook. A support pillar in the kitchen couldn’t be removed, so they integrated it into the design of a new kitchen island, Megan says. Reclaim Renew, of Kirkwood, wrapped the pillar in reclaimed wood. The island provides kitchen work space, and a place for people to stand during parties. They were able to use much of the original hardwood floors. “In the kitchen, part of the flooring is new, but in the rest of the house is the original hardwood that we sanded and refinished,” Megan says. They also kept the original stained glass windows in the living room. “They loved them, we loved them,” Megan says. “We were just keeping as much of the original details as possible.” A whimsical portrait of the couple’s cats on display in the bathroom was a one-year anniversary gift from

Casey to Chris. The portrait makes them smile and goes well with the fun geometric design mural on the bathroom wall, Casey says. The homeowners are enjoying their remodeled home. “First, the function has improved dramatically,” Casey says. “We've already hosted large family dinners and cocktail parties with ease - something we would strain to pull off before. Second is the complete transformation the design gave to the feel of our home. Working with a designer and trusting the process paid off in a big way. We've never seen anything like it before and somehow it's everything we've ever wanted.” With a smile he adds, “Also, the coffee nook.” See stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

Life in the Tropics A couple wanted their home to feel like a private paradise. By Michelle Mastro Photography by Karen Palmer Photography Builder Consort Homes Interior design Marcia Moore Design
64 AUGUST 2023 STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM
Locales like California and Florida harbor tropical climes nearly all year-round. But the Midwest of course has no such luck. Principal designer and creative director Marcia Moore of Marcia Moore Design was hired to transform a new St Louis build into a tropical paradise that reflects the vibes and feel of an island resort. The homeowner wanted a resort-style interior because when traveling before Covid, they always enjoyed staying at resorts. “We loved how 5-star resorts made us feel,” says the homeowner. “We thought it would be great if we could feel the resort experience every day without having to leave our home.” They had just built the house and were coming from a small apartment with very little furniture. “This was basically our starting point,” says Moore. Everything was white or beige, and one of the first things Moore wanted to do was amp up the color. She leaned tropical with vibrant hues and gentle allusions to the tropics. “They wanted more Caribbean or British West Indies as opposed to Polynesian or Hawaiian,” explains Moore. The couple also wanted to honor their African and Egyptian heritages with professional art by artists from those regions. “So, I found a wonderful Egyptian artist who created the pieces in the front entry, library and living room.” Although Moore had been asked to make homes feel like vacation getaways before, she’d never worked on anything quite like this. “Usually, a client might want a coastal theme—think seashells in glass jars and signs that read ‘This Way to the Beach.’” But Moore was up to the challenge of creating what the couple wanted, a resort with a high-end feel.

The couple works from home full-time, so they wanted every day to feel like a day in paradise. Moore helped transform the formal living room into the wife’s office. There, the soft sage green accent wall with a triptych painting was created specifically as a backdrop for Zoom meetings. “The wall to the left of the desk is a painted whiteboard for sketching out ideas and concepts,” Moore says. She added in a divan, the perfect spot to lounge between Zoom calls. “It was important to keep this room feminine and soothing to alleviate the stress of a high-pressure job.” Across from the office is the library. Using custom Ikea cabinets, Moore was able to transform the formal dining room into a unique and colorful reading space. Another means of relaxation is a former walk-in closet. “Behind the door seen in the workout room is the meditation room,” Moore says. Perhaps the biggest change in this room was making it feel cozy. Moore added in vibrant green tile to one wall, so the space didn’t feel like a closet anymore. A fountain hangs on the wall with shelves made with live-edge wood. Here perch florals, crystals and succulents that boost a feeling of tranquility. “But to me the primary bedroom is the epitome of a resort,” Moore says. “The woven wallpaper looks like waves paired against misty sky.” Easy chairs sit nearby, and a giant pendant lamp hangs overhead, resembling a jellyfish or floppy beach umbrella. And then there’s the breakfast nook. “We added a tropical mural to one wall so now it feels like you are eating on a terrace overlooking the ocean.” “Your home is your safe haven,” says the homeowner. So why not make your home reflect how you want to feel? And so the home feels like the couple are living in the lap of resort-style luxury. By Design Me by Mahlah. The theme for this La Selva Beach, California bathroom is Coastal Americana. The clients wanted a classic design that incorporated color, a coastal feel and a little whimsy. The designer maximized the tall sloped ceiling behind the freestanding bathtub with this gorgeous hexagon glass mosaic tile by Oceanside Tile. A simple sandblasted "wave" glass panel separates the wet area. Shiplap walls, satin bronze fixtures, a Hale Navy blue vanity and wood details add to the beachy feel. By Mercury Mosaics. The stunning shower wall features Moroccan Fish Scales in 1017E Sea Mist. The tile is a truly unique blue-green, jewel-toned glaze with a glossy finish and high variation, which gives the tile incredible depth and character. Every piece of tile is carefully crafted by hand in Minnesota by a team of skilled artisans.
By Fireclay Tile and designer Claire Thomas. The designer covered this bathroom's walls and floors in 2x6 tiles in Fireclay Tile's Evergreen, in a straight set pattern that pays homage to the home's mid-century roots. Pulling inspiration straight from the view out of the large bathroom windows, this rich shade of green mirrors nature outside while providing a striking complement to the copper soaking tub inside. slhl CLASSIC OR CRAZE
Photography courtesy of Tiles of Distinction
Against the Grain
Textured tile is a great way to add dimension to a space. We’ve asked local design professionals if this design trend is here to stay or if it’s just a craze. Edited by Maya Brenningmeyer Background tile, Leaf Lux tile available at Henry Kitchen & Bath
CLASSIC
As designers, we constantly strive to incorporate various layers of texture into our designs. Texture is a crucial element that keeps the eyes engaged and moving throughout the space. However, adding texture can be a tricky task, as it can easily lead to a cluttered and overwhelming space. This is where textured tile comes in as a perfect solution. It adds a subtle yet impactful aspect to the space without the need for extra components. Textured tile may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it has become a trend turned classic that is here to stay. Savannah Sells / Interior Designer, Youtopia Designs I love textured and dimensional tile and I feel it is here to stay! It adds character to an otherwise flat wall. When used on an all-white wall or any solid color surface it bounces the light off of the irregular surfaces creating interest. It’s a classic! CJ Knapp, Yours by Design, ASID Tile is always evolving. New patterns and textures will always create a unique look. Tile itself is classic in most kitchens, baths and outdoor settings. Textured tile adds another layer when combining with flat or glazed tiles. It also is put to good use in outdoor settings, to prevent a surface from getting slippery, as the roughness will generate traction. Georgine O’Donnell, O’DESIGNS
It is timeless! The opportunities with textured tile are endless. It is a simple way to create a "personality" for your floors and walls without overwhelming the space or to easily enliven a neutral tile design. Using textured tile for a backsplash or wall adds visual interest to a room, and is a functional choice for floors as they are more durable and slip resistant, making them ideal for outdoor spaces and bathrooms. Julie Abner, Julie Abner Interiors
BOTH I would say both as it really depends on the tile. While textured dimensional tile creates excitement and visual interest in a room, it is a craze in that it will call attention to the time period it was installed. However, handmade textured tile like Zellige is a timeless material that adds an artisanal appeal that works in any style home and is therefore a true classic. Janice Bohn, Anne Marie Design Studio
