The key to building YOUR DREAM HOME is preparedness
So you’ve been dreaming about your dream home, what are your top priorities?
Keeping in mind that there are multiple paths to creating your dream home, take your time and do your research. If you are building a custom home from the ground up, planning is the most important step. Do you buy the land and build a house on the property or do you first design the house and then find a property that would fit? Everything depends on what you are looking for.
Susan Bower, of Bower Leet Design, specifically designed a home for an elderly couple to age in place. Their priorities were straight-forward… low-maintenance, fully accessible and a design that melded the interior with the exterior. However, soon after their home was completed, the couple became ill and had to sell their custom-crafted home. A young couple bought it and couldn't be happier with the ramps that are great for baby strollers and the durable hard surfaces that make cleaning a breeze (pages 22-27).
It's no easy task, but you can also attain your dream home with cosmetic updates alone. No need to knock down walls, replace countertops or relocate spaces. Joni Spear, of Joni Spear Design did just that for homeowners Kenton and Donna Bruice. "Almost everything changed that wouldn't require a jackhammer"(pages 28-35).
If creating your Dream Home (pages 59-84) is on your bucket list, keep a visual or print image of your dream home, determine a budget, put together a professional team and communicate with your entire team as things progress. Each team member will be bringing a different perspective and an area of expertise to the project.
Whatever path you choose to attain your dream home, whether it's a new build, a total renovation or a cosmetic makeover, you'll be making lots of hard decisions that will be fun and well worth it upon completion.
Enjoy!

A Growing
CANVAS
Growing Greens gives us a closer look into the world of plantscapes and living wall systems. Plantings perfect for residential spaces, corporate offices, patios and more.
Edited by Maya Brenningmeyer
Plantscape vs. Living Wall System
A plantscape can be any level of planting from a color bowl on a reception desk to an office complex including atriums or a mass of freestanding planters. On the other hand, a living wall system is a system that is installed onto a wall surface that includes a means of supporting the plants with structure and water. It could be completely automated where the plants are on a watering schedule, which our team would monitor, or it could be on a wall where there is no access to water or a drain and the system is completely contained and dependent and maintained by our trained staff. Either way, we would design the system to work best for each client space.
Proactive Planting
During the initial process, our design team would assess the desired location for plantings and get to know the client’s space and how it will be used. We would make the recommendations based on our experience and knowledge and the needs of the client.
Every space is unique! Our goal is to solve the clients’ objectives so that they feel good about the investment and our relationship continues for many years. They may be resolving an issue with sound or creating visual barriers or wanting to add biophilic elements into their space for their staff and to create an inviting atmosphere for their guests.
One-of-One
The installations are completely unique to each client. We are looking at the amount of light each plant will receive, how much space the plant will have to grow. Does the space call for a tall plant or something that will remain compact? Will access be an issue, such as conference rooms or the president’s office? These are all things we take into consideration.
At-Home Haven
We also provide plantings and service in several residential environments. To care for these installations, we must be able to gain access to the space on a set schedule

whether it is indoors or outside. Living walls and moss walls are trending, even in residential settings. We also design and maintain creative outdoor spaces with our container programs on patios and around pools.
A Helping Hand
Living walls require some thought as to which wall system will work best for the space it is planned for. Some walls will be plumbed and the watering process will be on a timer, other systems require manual watering, which our staff is trained to do. All walls require expert care by someone who can manage the water needs of the wall. We use water sensors that connect to an app on our service supervisor’s phone so the current water content of the planting media can be monitored at all times and watering can be adjusted as needed. Our team also grooms the wall on a regular basis by pruning off any older leaves and stems, monitors fertilization needs and scouts and treats for pests.
Long-Lasting Leaves
Most of the plants that we use indoors are meant to be long-term plantings and many plants last for years in the indoor plantscape. Some plants last longer than others, this is why we have a built-in replacement program. If a plant starts to decline, we will replace it with the same plant to keep the plantscape looking fresh.
Changing with the Seasons
We offer seasonal plantings that change throughout the year to complement the current weather of St. Louis. In spring that means bulbs, pansies, pussy willow stems and all things spring. In the summer, these plantings transition to tropicals and flowering annuals such as palms, hibiscus, ferns, angelonia, lantana and more. In fall, the look changes to pumpkins, grasses, kale and mums. The winter look consists of mostly evergreens of different shapes, textures and sizes that coordinate with the size and look of the container.
Key to Success
Many factors come into play when planning for a new installation. Communication is key to success. We keep tabs on the space until it is complete and keep in communication with our contact person to ask a lot of questions to stay in the loop so we can plan accordingly. We always have a plan ahead of time, but have to be flexible!

This Land Is Our Land
Landscapes are some of the most beautiful works of art. When Jen Hahn of Jen Hahn Studio decides on a landscape view to paint “it’s usually because of the light,” she says. “Or the way it breaks through the clouds or changes the colors of the ground.” She sees her work in landscape art as an invitation to the viewer to share with her in noticing these details that make the landscape so beautiful in her eyes.
“See the shapes of the shadows here or how the trees reflect in the water there?,” she wants to ask the viewer. “For me, this noticing is a reminder that God made all this bold and intricate beauty, and He gives it to us to enjoy. I hope people can connect my paintings with their own experiences of awe and wonder.”
But Hahn didn’t start out as a painter of landscapes. She studied art and design at Webster University and worked as an illustrator and graphic designer for most of her career. “I only took one painting class in college
because I didn’t like the lack of control that I had over the paint in comparison to pencil or ink.” It was only after years of illustrating in a very meticulous way that she started to lean into the work of impressionist painters she so admired and their brushwork of imprecise figures. “I wanted to challenge myself to work more loosely, freely,” she recalls.
Flash forward to about seven years ago, and Hahn wanted to give painting another try. “Our family spends a lot of time hiking, and I love a good vista, so I started painting some of the overlooks and views I photographed on our hikes.” She began to teach herself to complete loose brush strokes, wiping away portions of painting where she got stuck on details instead of conveying the overall impression of the view. “I usually finish a painting by saying out loud, ‘Just stop. Walk away.’ Otherwise, I will overwork it.”
Hahn believes portraying the beauty of nature is important. “We are lucky to live in an

area that has made some of the most beautiful places accessible to the public,” she says, “but protecting our state parks, forests and waterways from harmful industries will be an ongoing battle in Missouri.”
For example, she once painted “Protect Pickle Creek” after a visit to Hawn State Park and seeing signs posted by residents all along the highway that read "We’re Worth More than Silica Sand.” “Some of the most beautiful parts of our state, and more importantly, the people that live there could be negatively impacted by planned silica sand mining in the area.” According to Hahn, art that reminds us of our own meaningful interactions with nature can encourage us to preserve it. “How sad would it be to see one of my paintings and think, ‘Missouri used to be so lovely?’”
Now, whenever she hikes, she’s always thinking of possible paintings. From family trips in Colorado to spots all around Missouri, she has a litany of forests and rivers to pick from. In Missouri, she likes to frequent the River Scene Trail at Castlewood State Park and the overlook at Bluff View Park in Wildwood, spots she hiked as a kid and now takes her own children to. “Connecting what I’m painting to a memory is important to me, and my very favorite thing is when someone else sees one of my paintings and says, ‘I think I’ve been there!’”
Find Hahn’s art through her website or at Union Studio in Webster Groves. She currently has work on display at SALONSalon in Ballwin. See stlouishomesmag.com for more photos and resources.

Ageless Beauty
Originally built for an elderly couple to age in place, this fully accessible, low-maintenance dwelling effortlessly morphed into the perfect home for a young family.
20 MAY 2024 STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM
Conceived as a whole, the exterior and interior of this striking property in Springfield, Illinois, create a harmonious balance with the natural landscape.

By Jeanne de Lathouder / Photography by Carmen Troesser / Architect Bower Leet Design / Builder Buraski Builders
The west façade of the property was designed to allow the main entrance to flow around an existing maple tree. Billowing prairie grasses soften the edges of the limestone-clad home.
It is often said that great design makes timeless design— and this custom-crafted home in Springfield, Illinois, tells a story illustrating that belief flawlessly. Dubbed the “Hand in Glove House” by architect and interior designer Susan Bower, founder of Bower Leet Design, the intentionally understated aesthetic melds interior with exterior “like a hand in a glove, so interwoven are the materials and space,” she says.
A member of the Amer ican Institute of Architects, Susan’s specialties include architectural services, interior design and exhibit design. After earning her Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Kentucky, the award-winning designer worked as an apprentice in New York City while acquiring her Master of Architecture degree at Princeton. She also taught at the prestigious Parsons School of Design before settling in St. Louis with her family, where she has lived for more than 20 years. Susan draws much of her inspiration from her childhood home on a Kentucky farm and has always had a natural curiosity for learning new things. During her 30 years of experience, she has earned numerous awards as well as an extensive client list that continues to grow.
Susan’s uniquely fluid approach appears in all her designs, including this exceptional Springfield property. Initially planned for an older couple to age in place comfortably, the home’s accessible design provides effortless, low-maintenance
living, with all essential spaces on one floor. However, soon after completion, the clients’ failing health forced them to sell the home.
“Surprisingly, a young couple planning their family bought the property and moved in,” says the designer, who partnered with Jason Buraski of Buraski Builders on the project. “They are delighted with the ramps—which will be great for children’s strollers—and the durable surfaces chosen for their easy cleanability, durability and maintenance.”
Situated on a wedge-shaped lot in a charming 1930s Springfield suburb, the 3,500 square-foot-dwelling was conceived as a whole, with the exterior and interior designed to flow together organically. The palette is intentionally calm and muted, with views of the exterior framed by stone, lending a rustic yet modern appeal. A public park lies to the north, and the west face features a side street with parking, making it ideal for the main entry to flow around an existing maple tree. The large lot incorporates two front yards with restrictive setbacks limiting the buildable area.
“ The house is divided into three fingers, each carrying different functions,” says Susan. “The most private—the ring finger—sits on the east and aligns with the neighboring house. The middle finger carries the owners’ suite and mudroom. The west wing—the index finger—faces the side street and carries the entry, living area, kitchen and outdoor terrace.”

The living spaces feature expansive windows, connecting the rooms to the beauty of the outdoor landscape. A natural wood ceiling cocoons the space in warmth with its honeyed patina.
The large thermal windows face north for consistent indirect light throughout the day.
Clad with Indiana limestone, the exterior emanates a natural elegance while honoring a native material used throughout the region for its splendor and accessibility. Planted prairie grasses sway in the breeze, contributing to the aesthetic and simplicity of the landscape. “The property as a whole creates a healthy environment on the outside by extending the adjacent park,” Susan explains. “It enhances the well-being of the neighborhood with greenery and tree maintenance. On the interior, it captures views of the park for the inhabitants, increasing their well-being. The entire home’s collective accessibility enables greater flexibility of use.”
The original clients requested durable, lowmaintenance materials that could be used both inside and out. A neutral palette throughout ensures a calming aura that blends with the surroundings. Combining architectural acumen with interior beauty, Susan’s material choices always consider form and function, fastidiously tailoring each project to the client’s specific needs. “Designed for eco-friendly sustainability, all systems in the house are energy efficient with excellent insulation values,” she adds. “The large thermal windows face north for consistent indirect light throughout the day.”
The living room’s expansive picture window gazes out to the park beyond, creating a spectacular panoramic view that’s also visible from the dining area and kitchen. A gorgeous stained-wood

ceiling with recessed lighting brings warmth to the room’s stone walls and the kitchen’s resilient hard surfaces. In the mudroom, the designer created a convenient built-in drop zone for keys, bags and other essentials. Additional custom features include a built-in library display cabinet for family albums and collectibles. The cabinet provides a buffer that screens the guest room and office from a cocooning media area designed for home entertainment and lounging. In the primary suite, a light-filled corner with a cozy club chair and ottoman forms a quiet nook for reading and relaxing, and a sleek state-of-the-art bathroom with a built-in bench, shelves and grab rails emits a serene spa-like ambiance.
“ This house delivers both beauty and performance achieved through an integrated and collaborative process with the owners and craftsmen,” Susan notes. “It connects with the suburban fabric by infilling an abandoned lot while also connecting beautifully to the history of the area by using regional materials beloved by this city. But best of all, it gracefully transitions to suit its young homeowners—like a hand in glove.” See stlouishomesmag.com for resources and additional photos.
The kitchen’s streamlined floor plan and sleek built-in cabinetry ensure optimal accessibility with plenty of prep space for multiple cooks. A zero-entry shower with built-in shelving gives the primary bathroom a modern spa-like feel.
Filled with natural light, the kitchen gleams with lustrous, durable finishes and flooring. The kitchen cabinetry from Bear Creek Cabinets all but makes appliances disappear.

Walls, woodwork and the fireplace are all bathed in a bold, peacock blue paint. Even though it’s an elegant room, it’s not too formal for family living, says designer Joni Spear. Rolled back lounge chairs, an English arm sofa and a pair of French Bergères chairs upholstered in a cut velvet ensure enough seating for everyone. “It’s truly a family room,” Joni says.
STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM MAY 2024 29
W“I grew this room from the ottoman fabric,” says designer Joni Spear. The cloverleaf ottoman is upholstered in a woven-zebra velvet. Four classic club chairs in deep blue nestle the ottoman. Overhead, the Hammerton chandelier juxtaposes organic and geometric designs. Windows are left uncovered to let in as much natural light as possible. In the adjacent breakfast area, the designer selected a marble bistro table and Riviera rattan dining chairs. “The open-cage pendant with four elegant floral blooms in an antique-burnished brash finish pairs well with pen and ink botanical prints,” says Joni.
hen your dream home is sold to someone else, what do you do to make the “second choice” house become “second to none?” One thing you can do is call Joni Spear Interior Design for Joni to work her magic, transforming a ho-hum, nearly characterless house into a glamourous yet comfortable home for a family of five.
The homeowners—Kenton and Donna Bruice—live primarily in Aspen, Colorado, but when their son began boarding school in St. Louis, the family began to consider a home in the Gateway City. “We were never a boarding school family,” says Donna, “but my son very quickly became a Midwestern boy.” She says a few years later they enrolled their daughters in private schools in St. Louis. “The great schools brought us here,” Donna says.
When their “dream home” was sold to another family, a process Donna calls “heart-wrenching,” she found a traditional two-story brick in Town and Country. “We’d heard of the neighborhood, and we liked the house’s proximity to the girls’ school and the kids’ activities,” says Donna. “It had a pool, and it had been renovated extensively a few years back, so it was a white-on-white canvas. But it was definitely not my dream house.”
To transform the lackluster abode into a dreamy vision, Donna searched for design professionals. “I found Joni on online,” Donna says. “I talked to other designers, but I couldn’t tear myself away from Joni’s visual aesthetic and her taste.” Joni says the home had very little natural light and was staged to sell when the Bruice family purchased it. “Everything was painted white, and it was so cold,” Joni recalls. The Bruices did not want any construction, so no walls would be moved, or countertops replaced. “She was very specific in that all our work would be cosmetic only,” says Joni.
Color, paint, wallpaper, window treatments, new lighting, new cabinet hardware and new furnishings were all utilized to update the home and meet Donna’s design style. “Almost everything changed that wouldn’t require a jackhammer,” Donna laughs.
She says other designers she interviewed said designer and client would shop together in Chicago or other major design-market cities.
“I heard that and just saw dollar signs,” says Donna. Joni, however, assured Donna they could work long-distance while the family was still living in Aspen. “She’d put together three vision boards for one room at a time and send those to me,” says Donna. “And each time,
30 MAY 2024 STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM
The designer says an early objective was the homeowner’s desire to transform the lackluster foyer into “an impressive appetizer” of things to come inside the home. To make a grand first impression, walls now feature a Phillip Jeffries dimensional covering with metallic leafing on horsehair panels. An oval SUNPAN console table with brass legs and a honed marble top softens the space’s boxy angles. Overhead, a Visual Comfort light fixture with cascading fluted glass tubes has an Art Deco vibe.
To avoid major construction per client instructions, the existing cabinetry was painted in Benjamin Moore Wedgewood Gray. “The cabinet hardware was replaced with French-inspired knobs and pulls,” says designer Joni Spear. Existing pendants were swapped for larger brass and white statement globes.
In the dining room, a cut velvet and metallic animal print wallpaper adds glamour to the traditionally minded dining table and chairs. Millwork is painted in a semi-gloss alabaster as a relief from the wallpaper and blush hue of the ceiling. The antique-inspired chandelier with draped crystal beading is from Visual Comfort. “This is one of my favorite rooms,” says the homeowner.
one of the boards was exactly spot on, where I loved everything on the page—the colors, the furniture, the lighting, fabrics, just everything. And she’d mail fabric swatches and wallpaper samples. It’s a very efficient way to work.”
“My objective was to ‘wow’ her because I knew she was not in love with the home,” says Joni. “I learned she loved color and brightness, so I tried to envelop the spaces in the home with saturated colors to give that feeling of warmth.”
Donna says she describes her aesthetic as “tradition meets glam,” or maybe “glam meets tradition.” “I’m not sure which way it should go, but I love, love, love traditional but with a very modern, hip flair, which I think Joni really brought to life, with color and mixing patterns and texture within a traditional framework,” Donna says.
Above: The owners brought their four-poster bed and burled wood console from their Aspen home and dressed the bed in their favorite Frette linens. “I sourced Sanderson’s “Riverside Damask” wallcovering to complement in dove and silver,” says Joni. Custom room-darkening drapery panels channel high-end hotel luxury. RIght: Maintaining the homeowners’ wishes to avoid construction, the primary bathroom received only paint and simple swap-outs for faucets, towel hooks, accessories and lighting. Joni notes the oversized art’s figural representations have a luxurious metal finish in hand-applied gold leaf, complementing the adjacent mirrors.

MY OFFICE IS ONE OF A KIND.
A beautiful example is the dining room. “We started with a very, very traditional table and chairs,” says Donna, which Joni notes resulted from a “highly juried online treasure hunt.” The pieces were refinished in a stain more reflective of the young homeowners, Joni says. Walls are clad in a Temperley London cut velvet and metallic animal print wallpaper, which provides a modern contrast to the traditional furnishings. The millwork was painted in a semi-gloss alabaster as a relief from the wallpaper and blush ceiling, and an opulent, antique-inspired chandelier with draped crystal beading provides a focal point. “It feels glam to me and unexpected,” says Donna. “This is one of my favorite rooms.”
Her office r eceived glam treatment as well, with a show-stopping ceiling of fuchsia and violet blossoms thanks to the Phillip Jeffries wallpaper. Dated wood shelves were painted pale pink, and the wall paint mimics grass cloth wallpaper, adding texture and interest. Feminine touches abound, from the desk’s fluted sides and tapered legs to the swirling orbs of the chandelier. “It’s all just unexpected,” says Donna. “My office is one of a kind.”
I n the family room, Joni selected a high-gloss, peacock blue paint to boldly elevate a once uninspired family room. Walls, woodwork and fireplace are all bathed in the peacock blue, with a pair of French Bergères chairs upholstered in a cut velvet of the same hue flanking the fireplace. Contrasting trim accentuates the lines of the English arm sofa with brass casters. “You are just drawn to it,” the designer says of the “magical” space. “It’s elegant but not too formal, and there’s enough seating for everyone. It’s truly a family room.”
With the family settled into their new home, Donna reflects that she has grown to love the traditional architecture prevalent throughout St. Louis. “It’s very much inspired me, and I feel the next home I design, I want to continue with the traditional style I’ve enjoyed seeing here,” says Donna. “And I want Joni to do my next home. Her taste is fabulous, yet she’s very price aware. She just made this whole process very easy.”
With the right designer mindfully choosing exceptional furnishings, statement light fixtures, bold colors and evocative wallpaper, an ugly duckling can change into a beautiful, graceful swan. “You can take a house that is so plain and simple, stripped of any character, and transform it into a castle without knocking down any walls,” says Joni. “My goal was for the house to be completed prior to the family’s arrival, but they became so excited about the dramatic transformation they couldn’t wait to move in.” See stlouishomesmag.com for resources.
A dark and dismal office was transformed into this glamorous, inviting sanctuary for Donna. A Phillip Jeffries wallpaper in fuchsia and violet outsized blossoms emboldens the ceiling, and dated wood shelves were painted a delicate pale pink. The fluted sides and tapered legs of the Global Views desk lend decidedly feminine flair to the space.

MARK OF A MASTER
Homeowners create 'garden rooms' to organize and elevate their city garden.
By Lucyann Boston Photography by Kim Dillon
MM ark Kalk and his partner Mark Lammert had a problem. More succinctly, it was a landscaping problem. They needed to fit a large garden full of native plants and flowing water into a much smaller space. The reason why goes back a few years.
In 2010, then living in Compton Heights, they assembled four adjacent parcels of land into a one-third-acre site in iconic Lafayette Square, where they had once lived and still had friends. On that lot, they built a large, red brick townhome.
At first glance, you might assume the residence, just off the square itself, was one of the hundreds of beautifully restored historic homes that fill the area. It features the arched windows and doorways and elaborate cornices that keynote the period. Judging from the façade, there is little to indicate it is a beautifully designed imposter.
M ark and Mark had called on custom-builder Jason Walters of
Stylecraft Homes and architect Jeff Day to take their ideas and turn them into a one-of-a-kind residence. Inside, the home artfully incorporates fine finishes with the latest in ecologically friendly construction and detailing. Outside, as well, the garden is ecologically friendly and unlike anything you would expect to see surrounding an historic townhouse.
Mark Kalk, a Master Gardener, who would go on to be named St. Louis Master Gardener of the year in 2014, envisioned and was instrumental in the construction of a pond and stream that wound through one of the empty parcels at the side of the house. Recently retired from the biology and life sciences department at Washington University, he landscaped the waterside garden space with approximately 100 different plant varieties, most of them Missouri natives that he explains “are adept at surviving in our nutty climate.”
38 MAY 2024 STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM
Just off the house, Mark and Mark worked with the builder to create a series of “garden rooms.” The largest, a stone-floored, window-filled conservatory, is modeled on the historic Linnean (green) House at the Missouri Botanical Garden. Open to the garden; filled with plants that can be moved outdoors in warm weather, and centered with a long dining table, it provides a perfect entertainment space 12 months a year.
There is a decidedly Mediterranean, Tuscan influence in two other outdoor, stucco-walled spaces. Accented with arched and shuttered recesses, both display influences drawn from the Temperate House at the Botanical Garden. One, just off the home’s living room, is designed for entertaining and outdoor dining. The other, off the library, contains a single chair and is meant for quiet contemplation. Both also incorporate small garden beds and flower-filled containers.
“ The big thing throughout the garden is flowers,” says Mark Kalk. “I
STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM MAY 2024 39
like different shaped flowers and different colors. I’ve added things that bring color from early spring through October, sometimes even into November. If you do that you are providing plants for pollinators because that is what flowers are all about.”
The beauty and imagination of the original garden, fully mature by 2017, made it a natural for the prestigious Missouri Botanical Garden Garden Tour that year.
I n 2019, Mark Kalk and Mark Lammert contemplated a move, along with family members, to Portland, Oregon. They bought a house in Portland, planning initially to divide their time between St. Louis and Portland. As time went on, they realized that if they were living in two places, they needed to downsize the St. Louis garden. When they were approached about selling off one of the parcels that made up their property, they agreed. The pond and the stream became the site for the new Lafayette Square townhome of their now next-door neighbors.
Dur ing this same time, the world was on COVID-19 lockdown. “Everybody got stuck,” Mark recalls. “Jobs changed, retirements changed. We were still early enough in the process to move everything back.” While a move to the Pacific Northwest may be in the future, Mark and Mark sold the Portland house and concentrated on living in St. Louis.

The entire process meant re-thinking their outdoor space and how to create a lush garden including the flowing water they had grown to love with approximately one-third of their lot missing. It was a big gardening problem.
Benches and pots went to friends and neighbors. So did clumps of native plants they had no space for. However, many such as purple and yellow coneflowers, native phlox, yarrow, Agastache/hyssop and Joe Pye weed found their way into the reduced garden.
Mark Kalk had personally dug out a great deal of the old water feature space himself, turning up vast amounts of old foundation stone, bricks, bottles, a car hood and amazingly a fully intact pack of cigarettes.
To design the new space Mark and Mark looked to Nature’s Re-Creations and Chris Siewing, whose work they had admired through magazine articles and during Pond-O-Rama water garden tours. They knew they needed help to transform the tight new space, just off the conservatory, into what they wanted.
“ They initially wanted a garden bed between the waterfall, pond and the conservatory,” Chris recalls. “But after taking measurements and photographs on site, I couldn’t see a way to make it happen in that restricted space.” The dramatic and stunning solution involved “bringing the water right up to the door (of the conservatory).” That meant that anyone stepping outside the conservatory is literally walking over water. Massive, closely spaced, flat stones in the stream provide firm footing across small expanses of water and into the garden beyond. “It is a unique design, and I am glad they trusted me enough to do it,” says Chris, who even managed to wedge in a shallow dog beach for Mark and Mark’s terrier Penny.
While it appears that the stream is lapping at the foundation of the house, it is actually contained within a liner, artfully concealed by Pennsylvania bluestone at the doorsill and below the waterline. The pond and stream are tilted slightly so that in heavy rains, excess water flows into a slightly depressed rain garden, planted with water-loving flowers and greenery.
Despite the small space and the amount of hardscape, the garden appears full and lush. “Through the years, I’ve learned about the technique of ‘over planting,’” explains Mark Kalk. “Not making a mess of things but putting plants closer together so you don’t have as much space between them. It’s an adaptation on natural planting.” He has found golden creeping jenny works well as a ground cover in any remaining bare spots.
For added color Mark fills pots with spider flowers, Mexican heather, geraniums and flowing blue evolvulus, all of which can be taken inside when the weather gets cold. To add height, he uses native, non-invasive yellow and coral honeysuckles on trellises. Despite its small footprint and city location, the number of native plants and amount of flowing water in the garden qualify it to be a Certified Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation
The corner lot allows visitors to the garden to enter through a back gate off the alley. It is the way Mark prefers. “What you see is the size of a typical yard for a city garden surrounding Lafayette Square,” he notes. But follow the mulched path and turn the corner and a water wonderland and trip to the Mediterranean provide a complete surprise. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources and additional photos.

Raised garden beds offer greater accessibility and an opportunity to add a fun architectural element to your garden.
By Maya Brenningmeyer
If you’re a gardener looking for a change, consider upgrading your garden with a raised bed. These above-ground planters help separate your garden from the rest of your yard and can add dimension to otherwise flat areas. Some standard items needed to start include soil, wood or the material you plan to use to create the raised bed, a shovel and a tiller.
Raised Ground Beds
The most basic of the raised bed styles, these beds only require additional soil and some manual labor. Start by piling soil on top of your predetermined area until it is about 6-8 inches high. From there, gently till the pile to combine the new dirt with the pre-existing soil, making sure to maintain the shape of the bed. Once you have everything where you like it, there’s no need to till again! Simply avoid stepping on the raised bed and make sure to keep the mound in-tact while gardening.

Containerized Raised Beds
For those living in high-traffic areas (near sidewalks, schools, close to neighbors, etc.), containerized beds offer convenience and protection. Typically made out of metal or wood and sitting 1-2 ft. off the ground. The additional height also offers additional accessibility making it easier for those requiring wheelchairs to reach their garden. An important item to remember when considering a containerized raised bed is that containers do require extra watering compared to other garden styles.
Supported Raised Beds
Supported raised beds take a little bit
Raised beds create a container for brining in clean, well-drained soil. So much of the soil around our homes is super compacted, stripped of fertile topsoil or may contain lead contamination. Raised beds create a container to bring in new fertile soil to mitigate those challenges.
Note: We advocate putting raised beds directly on the earth over containers, which have no contact with the earth. This allows for a much deeper root zone as well as biological contact with a myriad of beneficial microbes that live in the soil.
from both ground beds and containerized beds. These raised beds are typically on the ground, similar to ground beds, but are surrounded by an outer structure for support. These structures can be made from wood, metal, bricks or other materials found around the house. When creating these beds, determine where you’d like your garden to be and then pile your dirt into a mound shape. Then setup your frame and till the soil into place. One benefit of a supported raised bed is that the base of the bed can be wider than 5 ft., compared to ground beds that can’t exceed more than a 5 ft. width.
Elevated Planting
Once your raised beds are setup, it’s time to plant your garden! Most plants do well in this type of environment. Strawberries, lettuce, tomatoes and cucumbers are examples of plants that thrive in raised beds. If you’re planning on growing potatoes, broccoli, squash or blueberries, it’s best to avoid raised beds. This is because these fruits and vegetables either grow too large to be contained in a smaller space or grow best when planted in the ground.

Minty-Fresh Facade
Transformative siding project elevates a home’s charm and durability.
By Julie Brown Patton Photography by CanonShots Photography Remodeling contractor: Lakeside Renovation & Design
An enchanting “misty emerald” hue gave one house in Pacific, a minty-fresh look via a siding and exterior project completed by Chesterfield-based Lakeside Renovation & Design.
When the homeowner, Todd Woodall, decided to move away from a vinyl exterior used when the house was built in 1994, he wanted an appearance and design that “wasn’t like every other house.” That distinct look came from made-to-order James Hardie Dream Collection premium finish and lap siding. Based on Todd’s personal remodeling experience, he says it was equally important to upgrade to a superior exterior product.
“E very facet of this house’s exterior received thorough attention, including the installation of James Hardie select Cedarmill soffit and fascia, ensuring a cohesive and polished finish. To further enhance functionality and artistic appeal, we integrated pristine white gutters and downspouts, seamlessly blending with the newly rejuvenated exterior,” says Candice Davis, Lakeside Renovation director of marketing. She says this was the first time Lakeside Renovation had executed this exterior color, which gave the house a unique personality.

BEFORE & AFTER
Before
Todd also was interested in the longevity of his chosen creamy, surf-green exterior. “Vinyl can become brittle, faded, cracked or molded. Now, I’m likely looking at just a potential paint job in the future, if needed, not another vinyl replacement.”
I n fact, to fortify the home against weathering elements, Lakeside Renovation design consultant Andy Young says they prioritized quality and endurance by first installing James Hardie weather barrier as the foundational layer.
Attention to detail was paramount in every aspect of the project. In the dormer areas, Andy says they implemented bespoke craftsmanship with custom-cut Arctic White scalloped siding, adding a distinctive touch of sophistication. “Complementing the siding, we meticulously installed Arctic White James Hardie 4-inch trim and 6-inch corners, harmonizing seamlessly with the overall aesthetic,” he adds. Todd says he requested scallops in the gables to make the house appear more Victorian with a rich color palette, layered textiles and intricate accents.
O verall care within this project extended to the finer elements of the home, including new garage door jambs, shingle molding and gable vents. Andy says these additions not only enhanced the visual appeal of the home, they also reinforced the structural integrity of the house.
Achieving elevated outdoor living results is a highlight for Lakeside Renovation professionals. They also handle porch overhangs, basement build-outs and interior remodeling for kitchens and bathrooms, completed with the assistance of in-house architects and drafters.
“
We wanted to give the house character,” Todd shares. “Everyone ended up really liking its color and style. In the winter, it provides a brighter ambience. And in the summer, especially when flowers bloom, the house accentuates the other landscaping.” See stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

LAYERS OF
WHITE
A homeowner and designer work together to make mostly white spaces come to life with pops of color and cozy textures.
By Michelle Mastro Photography by Alise O’Brien Photograpy Interior Design by Castle Design
Creating a meticulously designed space from a blank canvas is a unique challenge. Looking for someone to take on the challenge, this new homeowner reached out to Morgan Brown of Castle Design after a neighbor’s home was transformed with Brown’s help. “She saw my work, and liked it, and so we went from there,” recalls Brown.
But what star ted out as a smaller project quickly grew into a larger endeavor. Brown was initially hired to help select furniture for the dining room. But it became clear these new dining and living room spaces needed a design refresh to create the monochronic look the homeowner craved.
“She didn’t want a lot of color, so what colors we chose came from the natural environment,” says Brown. Thus, the creamy whites and pops of black and gray in the dining and living rooms are balanced against a peppering of warm oak tones and greens, heralded in by wood furniture and houseplants. This balance of color offers an environment that doesn’t feel static, despite all the layers of white tones.
But perhaps the most important feature that breathes life into the home’s mostly white spaces is an abundant use of texture. “The homeowner loves textures,” says Brown. “So, I brought in velvet pillows, natural rugs and a unique wallpaper in the dining room that’s made of a handcrafted weave and gives a concrete, washy look. It was
52 MAY 2024 STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM SNAPSHOT slhl
really cool, and we wanted to work around this.”
While many homeowners like white spaces—the trendy all-white kitchen being one of them— Brown encouraged layers and textures to create a sense of movement. Were the homeowner less inclined to balance all the white shades, Brown worried the spaces would prove sterile and absent of life. “So, we used linens, velvet and textured wallpaper. When homeowners want all the white in their spaces, it requires a lot more layers than they think it does.”
And the homeowner was more than happy to have these elements weaved in. “It was an easy process and great results,” says the homeowner. “She understood what I was asking and looking for, especially with the wallpaper that she provided as an option. Texture was the biggest element that I wanted to introduce in the design, and she understood what I was asking.”
The collaboration between homeowner and designer proved of immense importance. This is because both the women were able to bounce ideas off each other to create the perfect look for the home’s spaces. “I think a good designer knows how to listen to their client and make their preferences work,” Brown explains. “But the homeowner should be open to doing something different to make it all work, and that’s what happened here.” See stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

Bringing fresh vitality to a venerable home always opens up new avenues. In this particular project, the designer introduced contemporary bookcase elements seamlessly into the original interiors. The grid pattern design effectively breaks up their bulk, creating a connection with the window muntins. Conversely, the display cabinets are tastefully inset into the walls, discreetly sheltering the showcased artifacts. This meticulous balance strikes the perfect chord between the timeless and the modern, capturing the essence of our desired fusion.

There was no need to be so literal in organizing by writer, etc., which allowed an additional dimensions and interest for this space.

Down to Earth
Architects at Hiroshi Nakamura & NAP create a library that blurs the line between architecture and nature.
By Maya Brenningmeyer
Architecture/Design: Hiroshi Nakamura & NAP
Photography by © Kohei Omachi and © Yuka Yanazume
Kurkku Fields, Japan
Tucked into a corner of Kurkku Fields sits a library built inside the earth. The fields were previously home to flat, dry land and construction debris. As the lush valley was restored, the architects believed the building should sit beneath the plants and microorganisms in the soil, allowing the cultivated soil layer to remain undisturbed. This idea led to the creation of the library, a "small cleft in the earth" where farmers could stop to rest.
Architects designed the library to seamlessly blend into the surrounding greenery. They followed the slope of the land and plowed out parts to create a water droplet shape. A set of stairs leads visitors down from the point of the droplet and into the library below. Eliminating beams and columns to make way for concrete slabs that form the outer retaining and wing walls. The outer elements, floor, walls and ceiling, are given an “earthen finish,” and the lawn continues up the vertical edge of the concrete slab. The smooth blend of architectural and natural elements allows the space to remain concealed under the valley. The vertical extension of the lawn also allows for irrigation and water retention, both of which can be adjusted based on the season.
86 MAY 2024 STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM CONNECT slhl
As the slope changes, so does the library’s ceiling. In some sections, the low ceilings allow for smaller hidden rooms for children. Deep within the library is a hall meant for storytelling - complete with stepped seats and built-in bookshelves. Most notable is the hall’s ceiling where thin vertical beams arrange themselves to support their neighbor, building up until they meet to form a circle. With the added support of the 40mm-thick vertical bookshelf frames, the unique design choice represents a “chain of reciprocal support” where “a social space arises that cannot be created by strong individuals alone.” The circle of light in the center symbolizes the agricultural community of Kurkku Fields and frames an earth covered in clouds.
Every element, from the exterior foundations to the book-shaped lights that line the corridor, has been carefully crafted to fit the architect's vision. Visitors can walk the main corridor and watch the day pass by from benches built into the surrounding bookshelves or enjoy quiet moments in the study, complete with a skylight capturing the sun and foliage under a kaleidoscope effect. As Hiroshi Nakamura & NAP describe, "It is a library that thinks of the earth while being embraced in the wisdom of the earth and human beings.” See stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

GEOMETRIC WALLPAPER adds a touch of structure to blank spaces.
Edited by Maya Brenningmeyer
CLASSIC
Geometric wallpaper is a classic for reasons we know to be true; that geometric patterns have been showing up in design for thousands of years. However, where it becomes trendy is in the "colors of the moment" color palettes. Color palettes come and go over time so, when selecting a geometric wallpaper, if you want it to stand the test of time, choose classic colors that never go out of style. However if you are all about color and trends, go for it! Just knowing you might want to reselect in a couple of years for the next "it" thing!
Kerry Staley, Hamtil Construction
Versailles
BOTH
Geometric wallpaper encompasses a wide range of designs, so it could be either. Wallcoverings that appear random or have multiple saturated colors can feel very trendy due to the instability of the pattern and can imbue a space with a sense of chaos. A classic choice would be a pattern with a smaller scale and repetition like David Hicks' Hexagon wallcovering. Keeping the wallcovering tonal with hints of color or metallics have a lasting style!
Molly Archeski, Srote & Co Architects
CRAZE
I think there are some timeless characteristics of geometric wallpaper, but wallpaper in general seems to really reflect trends and what's popular. It's a great way to incorporate a trend into a space. Kathleen Grim, Srote & Co Architects
Wallpaper has enjoyed a huge revival in the last few years, and geometric patterns have absolutely played a part in that. However, I would classify geometrics as more of a trend or craze. I'm sure they will always play a part in contemporary design, as well as "Mid-Century Modern,” but to truly stand the test of time, I'd stick with a trellis or "Tree-of-Life" design any day! Teddy Karl, The Great Cover-Up
Geometric wallpaper is craze worthy, albeit a nod to a fun, less fussy moment in time. Geometric motifs pay homage to its Mid-Century Modern roots of the 1950’s -1970’s. A more “classic” design harkens back to nature with depictions of birds, flowers, trees, leaves and fruit. Although modern, repeating patterns came out of nature's images as well, they’re often organic in shape and not quite as bold as their opposing geometric designs. All that being said, if your design style leans MCM, by all means go bold with a geometric wallpaper! If you’re worried about its lasting impression, try one accent wall with good quality peel-and-stick paper. Natalie Pinson, Creative Endeavors
