Wallpaper: A Smart Choice
Photography by Colin Miller/Strauss Peyton
Wallpaper…the word alone brings up all sorts of memories for me from blissful to nightmarish. My first experience with that bewitching roll of paper was while I was still in grade school. My mom let me pick out the wall treatment for my room in our new home. I was in heaven. The entire process of selection and application is a blur, but at the end of the day, red-flocked paper graced all four of my bedroom walls! I remember feeling like a princess living inside a beautiful music box. Another memorable experience with wallpaper wasn’t quite so enjoyable. Perhaps the paper was made during medieval times or it wasn’t put up properly, but darn it anyway, that wallpaper REFUSED to come down! Sound familiar? It was a task even a professional paperhanger wasn’t fond of tackling! But those days are long behind us. The advantages of incorporating wallcoverings into your home are limitless. Not only does today’s wallpaper go up and come down with ease, it complements every design style. There are a variety of patterns, textures and colors to give your home the high-end, sophisticated or casual attitude you are seeking (page 16). Another plus is you probably won’t see your wallpaper in someone else’s home because there are just so many selections available. Give wallpaper another look if you haven’t checked it out lately. It’s amazing how it can transform a room!
Enjoy, Suzie Osterloh Publisher/Owner

Jeff day,
slhl STYLE MAKER
founding principal of
Jeff Day & Associates, LLC, shares the advantages of working with an architect.
Bringing a vision to life In business for more than seven years, Jeff Day & Associates, LLC, brings a collective 70 years of expertise to the table. Specializing in innovative, residential and commercial design, Jeff Day & Associates work in a variety of architectural styles producing projects that consistently and creatively satisfy each client’s needs. SLHL: Where in the process do you bring an architect on board – before you buy a piece of property? Or after? Jeff: In my opinion, it is best to have the architect on board to help you select the property. My company specializes in sustainable design, and in large part that includes passive solar orientation. If there are multiple lot options for the location of your home, it makes good sense to review all of your options and make sure that you find a good balance between livability and passive solar gain with the lot you select. This not only plays a role in energy costs, but just as important (or perhaps more importantly), it plays a role in the comfort and usability of your home. SLHL: Do you need an architect for a remodeling project? Jeff: This needs to be reviewed on a case-by -case basis. There are many projects that will require a licensed architect, typically dictated by the municipality the project is in. I recommend that homeowners contact their municipality and get a clear understanding of what projects do or do not require the seal of a licensed architect. Projects that do not “require” an architect’s seal might just as well deserve the eye of an architect due to challenges with the program, or perhaps the financial investment being made warrants a more creative approach than a homeowner or contractor might be able to provide.

SLHL: How would you approach updating the exterior front elevation? Jeff: We have completed several façade renovation projects in and around St. Louis. Our approach to most of these projects is simple. We take a photograph of the home, and typically while on site we discuss likes and dislikes with the client. We then use the photograph to create hand sketches on buff paper to discuss with the client. In some more challenging cases, we field measure the entire façade so that while in the design process, we can be sure that what the client and we envision can be accomplished. SLHL: What architectural elements, both inside and outside the home, make a design contemporary/modern? Jeff: From era to era, contemporary and modern have meant different things. Frank Lloyd Wright’s work was considered contemporary and modern, Walter Gropius’ and Mies Van de Rohe’s work (in the same era) was also considered modern. The 50’s (and late 20th century) offered what we now call “post modern” and the 80’s and 90’s brought the creativity of architects like Frank Gehry and Richard Meier to great popularity. As of recent, what is seen as “modern” architecture with our clients includes: “minimalism,” that is, very simple clean lines, a lack of ornamentation and perhaps a one or two color scheme for the interior. We have also designed “modern” homes that use traditional materials, yet in a simplified approach that reduces or removes ornamentation yet arrives at a pleasant design. See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

When John Beck couldn’t find an elevated dog feeder that would work for his American Boxer, Drama, he took matters into his own hands – literally. He searched and searched for just the right materials, as he often does, and made the feeder himself out of steel and porcelain bowls. The feeders are just some of the things he makes. He owns John Beck Paper and Steel in Edwardsville, Ill., where he constructs custom steel furniture, doors and lighting. To make the pieces, John and his team work with welding machines and saws, but most of their work is done with their hands. They clean, cut, weld, polish, sand and sometimes paint the steel. Or they will take a shotgun to it. Seriously! The shotgun pieces are his favorites, and the holes and indentations add character. Although some of his work can be found locally in a few places, such as Winslow’s on Delmar, most of his work lives on the East and West coasts and in Chicago and Texas. He has sold his pieces to places such as Facebook, Google, Starbucks and Under Armour. John’s interest in furniture making started about 20 years ago when he was looking at a Room & Board catalogue. John thought the furniture he saw in the catalogue was groundbreaking. Then he had another thought: He could make furniture like that. So he did. At the time, he was working in welding supply and has a degree in graphic design, so he learned the techniques by doing. He eventually left his job and opened a furniture shop downtown called Blend with his sister-in-law, who collected vintage farm furniture. The shop closed, and he opened his current business. His pieces are all about functionality. He isn’t into trendy, and he isn’t into fancy. If a part doesn’t serve a purpose, they don’t use it. And doodads? Forget about them. He’s not looking at what other furniture places are doing for inspiration. He doesn’t want to subliminally recreate something. He makes things, like the Drama feeder, that are necessary. “My inspiration is necessity,” he says. John will spend roughly eight to ten weeks on one project. When he does a project, he devotes time to really thinking about it and what things will make the piece unique. “I try to do some personal things,” he says. He’ll hide little surprises in his work. The pieces on his website are like starting points. Clients will see something online and will ask for customized versions of the pieces, like a painted top or longer sides. On his website, johnbecksteel.com, he encourages you to get in touch if you think “no interior is complete without a healthy dose of steel.” But he’s not looking to push this style of furniture on anyone. “If somebody’s into it, they’ll know,” he says. See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

Thanks to chef Ben Poremba, the intersection of Tower Grove and McRee avenues in Botanical Heights is one of the most delicious corners in town. Home to Elaia, a fine-dining restaurant; Olio, its more casual sibling and French bakery La Patisserie Chouquette, the adjacent corner spots are all owned by Poremba. He also co-owns Salume Beddu, an artisan sausage shop in Lindenwood Park. In addition, he’s opening a fried chicken restaurant in Botanical Heights and will lead the prepared-foods department at the upcoming Global Market in the Delmar Loop. Despite all of his ventures, Olio and Elaia are the core of his business,

Bengelina Hospitality Group. “They’re the heart of everything I do,” says Poremba. “Olio is more casual, rustic, with dishes to be shared,” he says. “Elaia is the sort of more sophisticated older sister.” He characterizes Olio as “fun, vibrant, European if you will.” The vibe is casual, the food is Mediterranean and the cocktails are classic. In December, the foodie website Eater National named Olio one of the nation’s 19 hottest wine bars. Elaia has the feel of a four-star restaurant. Diners can choose from an a la carte menu, a four-course prix fixe menu and a 10-course tasting menu. “We change the menu all the time – nightly, really,” Poremba
says, “but sometimes we come up with a marriage of flavors we like to play with.” Take his goat cheese mousse with Italian speck (smoked prosciutto) and toasted hazelnuts, a dish he will demonstrate at SLHL’s cooking school on Tuesday, March 4. “Those three things are really, really beautiful together,” Poremba says. Poached persimmons, dehydrated persimmon chips, crunchy meringues and a mustard-spiked cherry condiment called mostarda round out the plate. He’s paired the mousse with strawberries in the spring, with apples in the fall and with pears in early winter, swapping out the nuts and the seasonings to STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM MARCH 2014

accent the fruit of the moment. The restaurants’ food reflects Poremba’s heritage and experience. He’s a native Israeli, born to a mother who’s also a chef. He came to St. Louis as a high school senior and stayed for college. After college, he went home to Israel, studied cooking in Italy, then returned to St. Louis. Both Poremba’s restaurants are intimate and both settings are unusual. Olio is housed in a renovated 1930s-era Standard Oil station that stood empty and dilapidated for 25 years or so. It can seat about 40 in the dining room and bar. In the summer, a large patio beckons, and patrons can enjoy a leisurely meal as they watch movies projected on a large wall. An enclosed corridor connects Olio to Elaia. Elaia’s dining room holds about 30, and a private room offers seating for 12 with a view into the glass-enclosed wine cellar. The building was in complete disrepair and required a total rehab. “This was a very tough neighborhood,” Poremba says. Botanical Heights is now a weekend destination for foodies, and Olio and Elaia are weekday hangouts for the neighborhood thanks to new and renovated housing as well as Poremba’s culinary gems. Found by the wife at an estate sale, the Baroque-style sconces were painted red to complement the artwork. Designer Garison Salinas and his clients collaborate to create a highly versatile living environment. By Barb Wilson Photography by Anne Matheis
The Central West End had always held a special allure for these former suburbanites. “We came here constantly and thought it would be a great place to live,” says the husband. He and his wife had raised their family in a large West County home and quips, “The day after our youngest graduated from high school, the ‘For Sale’ sign went up in our front yard.” While that may be a slight exaggeration, the couple’s search for a vibrant downtown lifestyle began almost immediately, and two years ago they zeroed in on a classic urban townhouse set on a quiet street in the heart of the CWE. Originally a four-family residence, the building was constructed in 1905. Decades later, two of the units were purchased by the head of Washington University’s architecture department, who converted them to a single multi-level home with a distinctly modern flair.
Subsequent updates were made, as well, and a key attraction for the current owners was the townhome’s fenced backyard patio, which features a fountain and recumbent lion-with-ball sculpture – a prototype by St. Louis legend Bob Cassilly. Downsizing from a 4,500-square-foot family home to a 2,700-square-foot townhouse required considerable planning, and the couple decided to start from scratch, saving only a few special items from their previous residence. The choice of a designer was never in question, though. For several years, the husband had enjoyed a professional relationship with Garison Salinas, architectural design consultant and principal of Garrison Ltd. “Garison was involved from the beginning and provided the ideas,” he states. Thoroughly familiar with his clients’ multifaceted lifestyle and contemporary tastes, Salinas opted to create an environment that STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM MARCH 2014

would adapt easily to any activity, “from blue jeans to black tie.” He describes the décor as “California coastal,” indicating the main-level living room, which is designed for comfort – “cleanable, kid-friendly and more like a lounge area.” The uniquely angled fireplace was converted to gas by Gas Appliance Service, with flames emanating from a bed of crushed black glass. The brick surround was replaced with gleaming expanses of absolute black granite tile from Kirkwood Flooring, who also refinished the main level’s diagonally laid white oak floors and installed all-new flooring in other areas. Walls were mirrored by County Glass to enhance the space, and sleek leather couches and swivel chairs, all locally acquired, provide plenty of comfortable seating. Salinas and the wife collaborated in the choice of furnishings, many of which were selected online. “We wanted a high-end, quality look,” Salinas explains, “and using the Internet, clients can be in Milan or L.A. in seconds. Able to see concepts from around the world, they
feel more confident about pulling the trigger.” The formal dining room is a case in point. Found online by the wife, the expandable table has an easy-to-clean, inked oak matte finish and graceful, cabriole-style legs. With their classic shape and transparency, the acrylic dining chairs are reminiscent of the iconic Ghost chair and make the room appear larger, while soft-green ultrasuede host/hostess chairs add color and contrast. “The design gods worked with us in this space,” Salinas laughs, referring to the massive painting that set the tone for the dining room. An early find, the rich-hued abstract was a perfect fit for a structural bump-out that would otherwise have been visually distracting. On the opposing wall, Ralph Lauren-inspired metallic grasscloth from Reineke Decorating Center lends a subtle sheen, and a large mirror reflects the painting. Fully open to the living room, but on a lower level that accesses the patio, are the casual dining area and kitchen. Already equipped with STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM MARCH 2014

stainless appliances and stylish contemporary cabinetry, the kitchen required only a few modifications, including a glass tile backsplash installed vertically to emphasize height. A custom glass shelf was added to the existing work island, and an array of large glass serving pieces from Mexico, cleverly arranged on one wall, creates a dazzling splash of color. Informal meals are served on a streamlined table, topped with frosted glass and surrounded by another set of clear acrylic chairs. An abstract metal sculpture by Jay Behrle from the owners’ private collection is prominently displayed overhead. Blurring the distinction between interior and exterior spaces is a hallmark of Salinas’ design, as illustrated by the surface treatments in

this area of the townhome. The interior flooring, Centiva solid vinyl tile, merges seamlessly with the stamped concrete of the backyard patio, which was constructed by CLC Construction and features a heated walkway. A custom railing by Perpetua Ironworks accents the steps leading up to the living room, and absolute black granite blankets the half-wall, creating a smooth visual transition to the fireplace. Another custom rail and metallic grasscloth line the staircase to the second-floor privacy level, and an eye-catching framed scarf purchased by the owners on a trip to Amsterdam embellishes the landing. Lit by a huge skylight, the upstairs hall continues the industrial aesthetic with frosted glass doors, square stainless knobs, and Emtek lock and pulls.

Inspired by boutique hotels the owners enjoy when traveling, the master bedroom features a custom vinyl headboard with platinum python finish, low-profile nightstands, and a deep-pile New Zealand wool carpet. The modular chifforobe, from Resource Furniture in Manhattan, houses a coffee-making center.
Renovation of the master bedroom started with removal of the existing potbelly stove. Salinas chose to “neutralize” this entire wall with black paint, providing a bold background for the entertainment center and caviar-colored bookshelves that display the owners’ personal memorabilia. Similarly dramatic, the boutique-hotel-inspired bed has a one-of-a-kind headboard, more than five inches thick and covered in platinum vinyl with a python finish from LuLu Belles. The headboard’s silvery sheen is repeated in the geometric-patterned bedspread, and a classic orchid bench and pops of citron yellow in the occasional pillows add vivid color. Wonderfully tactile, the deep-pile carpet is cappuccino-colored spun New Zealand wool that literally massages bare feet. Completing
the look are low-profile nightstands, chrome reading lamps, and a modular chifforobe that disguises a complete coffee service center. The adjacent walk-in closet is European-styled and open-topped, with the wall stopping short of the ceiling. And in the master bath, glass tile surrounds the double-bowl vanity with its stylish Dornbracht fixtures. Fashionable and incredibly versatile, this contemporary townhouse is a prime example of Salinas’ ingenuity and design skills. For the homeowners, it’s an elegant urban sanctuary – the fulfillment of their long-held dream. See www.stlouishomesmag.com for more photography and resources.

Once an ultra modern home that is now classic contemporary, designer Caryn Burstein has had a design relationship with this Ladue residence for more than twenty years.

Every house has a story.
Some are short and sweet. Some span a hundred year history. And some have a story deeply rooted in the life of its designer/builder. Such is the story of an architectural accomplishment in Ladue that has been a cherished project of designer Caryn Burstein, Arcterior Design, since it was a hole in the ground more than twenty years ago. After being approached by a client in 1993 to build a modern home, Burstein has continued to be involved with the home’s design and layout with the next two homeowners. To say she knows the ins and outs of the home would be an understatement. Her relationship with the
42
home and her passion for its design is what drew the two additional homeowners to continue to keep her on as the home’s designer. Each of the homeowners was drawn to the home because of their adoration and appreciation for its straight and streamlined architectural style. As the home changed hands between owners, the interior design evolved to fit each family’s living style. “The first owners were very formal,” explains Burstein. “The second only lived in the home a short time, and the current owners have a more casual style.” The current owners fell in love with the bones of the home. While the husband has a more contemporary style, the wife is more

traditional. After meeting with Caryn and hearing her ideas to make the home a blend of the couple’s differing styles, the current owners knew she was the right fit. “Caryn is very tied to the home,” the wife says. “She came in with strong ideas from the beginning that we immediately liked, and we knew she could make this home a warm, contemporary style.” The simple, minimalist design allows the homeowner's art collection to shine, while plush fabrics and a variety of textures achieve the warmness they desired. The second owners removed many of the modern details of the home such as the marble flooring, which they
replaced with hardwood and further added to the warm feel the current owners wanted. While removing the detailing and materials was hard for Burstein as a designer, customizing the design to each client's style is always a challenge she is up for. The main floor was entirely redesigned. With an open flow, the home still has an intimate feel, and private spaces are kept separate from family living areas. A vast great room separates the private and communal spaces. Characterized by expansive floor-to-ceiling windows that allow natural light to stream through, the great room is cozy and inviting.

The simple, flat panel sheer window treatments lengthen the space. Burstein chose a cream and brown color scheme with accents of gold and brushed metals to keep the space from feeling too stark. The fabric choices are clean yet soft and plush. A cream seating area, including a Thayer Coggin sofa and Lee Industries chaise in tusk, contrasts against the dark woods of the rich chocolate coffee table and complementary end tables. The fireplace wall was previously just drywall, so Burstein came up with the idea to add a marble surround while changing out the traditional fireplace logs to a more contemporary insert. Above the
fireplace hangs the room’s dramatic statement piece, a vibrant work of art by Canadian artist James Verbicky. On the opposite wall, floating shelves display other prized pieces of artwork. Verbicky is a favorite artist of the couple, who have several of his other works throughout the home. His first painting they acquired, “Pressure IV,” is the focus in the dining room. “The whole idea of this space was to showcase the painting,” says the homeowner. An idea which Caryn suggested as the painting was previously located in the great room. "The painting was lost in the great room due to the proportion and scale," Caryn says. "It didn't shine as well as it does in
Below: Another James Verbicky painting, "Ressure IV" is the colorful focal point of the dining room. A simple and clean light fixture above the dining table was carefully selected to not impede the view of the painting. the dining room." Keeping the rest of the accessories low key and the walls a neutral gold allows the Verbicky painting to bring a vibrant pop of color into the space. The biggest challenge the designer faced in the dining room was finding the right light fixture to complement the painting. “We had to be selective in the light fixture we chose,” explains the homeowner. “We didn’t want anything that blocked the view of the art.” The solution was a clean fixture suspended from simple wires that virtually disappears as you enter the dining room. A Swaim table with stainless steel base seats eight and completes the space.
Off the dining room, the family room and kitchen is where the family of five spends the most time. Custom cabinetry designed by Arcterior and produced by Centorbi in honey tones provides ample storage, and an oversized granite island adds extra seating. With three children and a constant flow of friends and classmates visiting, the homeowners knew they needed a large dining table in the kitchen. So Caryn had a custom espresso-finished table built with benches on both sides for extra seating. In the adjacent family room, custom built-in shelves were designed around the fireplace, which was fitted in Navajo stack stone. A

Colors in the conjoined spaces flow into the color palette of the rest of the main floor. Just off the family room and connected to the great room is a main floor powder room that the designer describes as an amped up

version of the great room. Previously equipped with a glass vanity top, the powder room sink wasn’t conducive for a family of five. “This is the one bathroom on the main level, so it had to be functional for a lot of use while still looking nice,” says the homeowner. A floor-to-ceiling framed mirror opens up the space. The natural textured Phillip Jeffries granite stone wallcovering in liquid gold adds drama to the vanity wall. The only private space on the main floor is the couple’s master retreat. With a large walk-in closet, the homeowners knew they didn’t need a lot of furniture cluttering the space. “Because we weren’t going to have a lot of furniture, we needed to find other ways to make our

bedroom homey while still interesting,” the homeowner says. A custom upholstered wall headboard covered in faux leather immediately draws your attention. “Adding the leather headboard to the wall adds a bit of drama to the room while maintaining softness in the space,” says Caryn. The wall across from the bed was left plain, so Caryn dreamt up a solution – building out the wall and adding a fireplace. Warm and cozy, the master suite is private and personal for the owners. A favorite painting by local artist Marian Steen was given to the couple as a
wedding gift and is proudly displayed in their private sanctuary. With more than two decades vested in this contemporary Ladue residence, it is no wonder why the current owners chose to keep Caryn on board. With her creative solutions, contemporary stylings and eye for architecture, the homeowners knew Caryn was the right fit for making their home personal to their lifestyle. And Caryn is forever grateful to continue to be a part of a project that has been near and dear to her heart for most of her career. See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

Share in the enchantment of a Webster Groves garden that is a haven for hostas and the pride of homeowners Pat Payton and Jean Hudson. If you would ask gardening aficionados in the St. Louis area to name their favorite spots, chances are many would list this Webster Groves garden. Filling both front and back yards, the lush, peaceful space, filled with hostas, ferns, specimen plants and walkways, seems to beckon visitors to take a stroll and be refreshed. It is a garden that truly reflects the warm personalities and generosity of the two women who have created it and are more than happy to share their design with everyone from top garden experts to the occasional passersby. Featured on such prestigious garden tours as those sponsored by the Missouri Botanical Garden and the Nature Conservancy, Pat and Jean also regularly open the garden for Webster Groves High School fund raisers and local garden clubs. Neighbors out walking are invited to detour through the garden. “We maintain it for ourselves,” explains Jean, “but it’s also fun to share with other people.” The story of the garden began in 1976 when Pat purchased the Tudor-style stucco home complete with a deep narrow yard she termed a “euonymous paradise.”There was “euonymous ground cover, a large euonymous bush and a euonymous vine arching over the French doors.” Pat knew she wanted a garden. She had loved gardening and flowers since she was 9 or 10 years old and her great-grandmother, who lived in South St. Louis, would walk her around to the front of the house to admire the four o’clocks. “I saw all those colors and fell in love,” Pat recalls. Work to clear the property began slowly. In addition to the euonymous, weedy, scrub maple and mulberry trees abounded and needed to be eliminated. In those days, tending to just a small part of the yard was as much as she could manage. Fast forward to Pat’s retirement from Southwestern Bell in
50

1990. By then she had been joined by Jean Hudson, who also worked at Southwestern Bell. Jean’s love of the earth and gardening came directly from the farm near Nashville, TN, where she grew up. In the words of both women, it was in the 1990s that “the gardening got serious.” Pat had joined the Webster Groves Women’s Gardening Association. While setting up for the group’s annual plant sale, fellow member Joan Hummel introduced Pat to the joys of hosta. In 1993 Pat and Jean combined a visit with Jean’s sister in Atlanta with a trip to the American Hosta Society Convention, also in Atlanta, and were truly hooked. “We went to the national convention before we went to the local convention,” Pat says laughing. The charm of hosta, she adds, comes from the “beauty, variety, color, shape and size of the foliage. They are beautiful plants all season long; they are peaceful plants. They go well with ferns, which we love.” Hosta also allows their garden to be “triple planted,” Jean explains. The show begins in early spring with small bulbs and moves on to daffodils and tulips in later spring. Then, the hostas and ferns emerge to cover the bulb foliage. Bulb foliage, Pat notes, is “encouraged down,” rather than being tied down or cut off, to guarantee blooms in coming seasons. Recently, because they have run out of room in the garden, Pat and Jean have begun growing hostas in containers and have had spectacular results both in displaying more unusual species in the summer and over-wintering them in the same containers in the cold. Over the years, Pat and Jean have absorbed knowledge by talking with other gardeners, reading magazines and by trial and error. They are, in Jean’s words, “always challenging the zones” and trying plants that may or may not do well in either the cold or heat in St. Louis. Each day in the garden, she notes, is “a moment in time.” Gardens are continually changing and never

"Gardens are continually changing and never look exactly the same way twice."
look exactly the same way twice. While they love to garden, they also are continually looking for ways to make their chores less labor intensive, Pat notes. Here are some of their best tips: Pea gravel dug into the soil can work wonders. It discourages “chewing critters” who don’t like the sharp edges and loosens soil to allow plant roots to sink deeper and weeds to pull out more easily. It also allows water to perk down deeper, especially on slopes. Hostas can be cut down in mid to late fall to allow compost to be spread over garden beds. Mulching with compost cuts down on the need for fertilizer. Allowing flats of plants to soak for a short time in a solution of Epsom salts and liquid plant food before going into the ground eliminates transplant shock and gets small plants off to a good start. Dead-heading flowering plants regularly keeps gardens tidy and vigorous plants from actively re-seeding. Strips of old panty hose make great plant ties. They are elastic, an unobtrusive color and don’t rot. Use strips of old brown carpet, placed carpet-side down and covered with mulch, to create weed-free walkways. Large shrubs such as viburnum, crepe myrtle and button bush can be limbed up into small trees to provide an understory and shade for plants beneath. To eliminate weeding drudgery, seek out a hoe-length garden tool with a triangular head that easily flips weeds out of the ground. Jean and Pat’s warmth and generosity encompasses everything they do. Just as their gardening got serious, they also opened their arms and home to Jean’s grand nieces, then ages 2 and 5, so the sisters, in need of a stable environment, could be raised together. Jamie, 21, is now a junior in college and Marissa, 18, will be beginning a pre-med program in the fall. While both women had been divorced and never envisioned children in their lives, raising the two girls has been a joy, they both agree. And they are hoping that their love of gardening will eventually be passed on to a new generation. See www.stlouishomesmag.com for more information.

Stunning Succulents Beautiful and virtually indestructible, succulents are easy to care for and attractive. Defined as any plant with thick, fleshy water storage organs, succulents provide style when potted in a container or mixed in your landscape. SLHL asked local landscapers to share their favorite succulent and pot.

“Hen and Chick plants, Sempervivum, are an old-time favorite and are still as popular today as they were 100 years ago. Very easy to grow, they thrive in heat, humidity and drought. Growing well in all but deep shade, they make fantastic containers indoors and out.” Ann Lapides, Sugar Creek Gardens.
“This plant specifically is the Mother of Millions Kalanchoe daigremontiana. It has an almost prehistoric look and is great for indoor succulent gardens in sunny spots. All of the little baby plants on the leaf margins can be planted as well...hence the name!” Eric Ringhofer, Green Guys.
“If you have an old bird bath, unusual pot or even an interesting log or piece of driftwood, succulents can be added for an unusual garden piece of srt. This log is filled with varieties of Echeveria elegans, Aloe, Gastrolea Wonder and Sempervivum. Succulent planters require a sunny area and do not need too much water. Fertilize about every six months with a 20/20/20 fertilizer and enjoy these relatively care free plants in your landscape or in unique containers.” David Sherwood, Sherwood’s Forest.
“The succuulent in the teal pot is a Senecio Jacobsenii ‘weeping jade’. I love this plant because they can fool you. As this one shows, you think it's one thing, and surprise! It’s a Jade succulent.” Linda Coonrod, Chesterfield Valley Nursery.

Sprin} buds in Spain One of the most highly regarded wine regions in Spain, Rioja is home to the Murua family, which produces Bodegas Muriel, Vina Eguia and Marques d’Elciego wines. BY Lorraine Raguseo PhotographY COURTESY OF Quintessential Wines and Fernando Caballero
Spring officially begins on March 20. Depending on how brutal the winter has been, here in St. Louis there may be few signs of the season of renewal aside from the start of major league baseball. But, in Rioja, one of the best-known and most highly regarded wine regions in Spain, spring is quite evident in nature as the warmer climate sparks leaves peeking out from juniper bushes, almond and olive trees, and the first buds appearing on the grapevines that cover much of the valleys and hillsides in the northern part of the country. The prime sub-region for the best grapes is the Rioja Alavesa, which is closer to the Sierra de Cantabria mountain range and at a higher altitude than the rest of Rioja, with most of the vineyards lying north of the Ebro River. Some of the oldest and most respected bodegas (wineries) in Rioja are within the Alavesa, and the picturesque town of Elciego is considered the center of this sub-region. Naturally, when spring arrives and the vines start coming to life, it is time to celebrate and to make plans. Wine families from this region, such as the Murua family (producers of Bodegas Muriel, Vina Eguia and Marques d’Elciego wines), will bring
60
up a few of their older vintages from one of the oldest cellars in the Alavesa to enjoy over family meals with traditional Rioja dishes as they strategize how to move forward in the new season. While Spain produces some excellent, aromatic white wines, the backbone of the industry is red wine, and mostly from one particular variety – tempranillo. Barrel aging is the key to making great Rioja. It is so important that the Spanish government created the special designations of Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva, appearing only on those wine labels that are aged in oak a minimum of 12 months (Crianza), 15 months (Reserva) and 21 months (Gran Reserva). So, a wine like Bodegas Muriel Reserva 2008 spent the greater part of 2008, all of 2009 and some of 2010 resting in French and American oak barrels (a total of 24 months) and then an additional two years in its bottles. The wood gives the wine a distinctive vanilla and spice flavor that blends extremely well with the natural red fruit flavors of the fermented grape. It’s no surprise that a well-known Rioja dish like grilled baby lamb chops – cooked over a wood-burning fire and served

with red peppers cut into strips, tossed with garlic, parsley and Spanish olive oil and roasted in the oven until limp – are perfect with this wine. Spicy dishes also complement Rioja-style tempranillo. Another traditional recipe that is ideal for the Vina Eguia Crianza 2008 (a venerable old Rioja winery that the Murua family took over a few years ago) is potatoes Rioja style with chorizo. Garlic, onions and chorizo sausage are sautéed with potatoes and given a final “kick” with Spanish paprika. The dish contains all the ingredients for an amazing cold-weather side dish at dinner, or even a stomach-filling lunch, paired with a green salad, scallion ribbons, cherry tomatoes, large, pitted Spanish green olives and shavings of Spain’s famous Manchego cheese (even better if the cheese is aged seven months or more). Spanish foods with Rioja wines make for great meals any time of the year...when there’s still a chill in the Missouri air, or when the warmer winds of spring come calling. See www.stlouishomesmag.com for more recipes.

Bold and the Beautiful A quaint 1940s Clayton ranch with classic bones and some old-school charm gets a sophisticated interior facelift that is, perhaps, best exemplified by its bright, contemporary dining room. BY JAMIE SIEBRASE
PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANNE MATHEIS
Homeowner Allison Englander always adored the individuality associated with contemporary finishes – a far cry from that Pottery Barn brand of shabby-chic filling her previous home. So, when she purchased her current Clayton property, Englander wanted to update its traditional aesthetic, starting with the blond hardwood floors. But, Englander recalls, “The guys redoing my floor didn’t want to go dark because of the home’s age.” That was about the time Englander walked into Savvy Surrounding Style, where she met designer CJ
64
Knapp, who drove to the new pad that afternoon and happily sanctioned a dark-stained base. By now, as modern design sneaks its way into our everyday vernacular and favorite catalogues, it’s no secret that contemporary living needn’t mean barren rooms with off-white walls. Color, in fact, is an easy way to modernize without sterilizing. And, Englander wasn’t the least bit nervous about the room’s rich, navy hues. “Your first instinct in a small space is to go light,” says Knapp. “But we painted the room dark blue instead because blue recedes, especially when you do it on the wall.” Granny apple green – “the easiest color to live with,” according to Knapp – and silver and black complete the palette. “Black,” the designer adds, “is actually a complete neutral in design.” “With CJ,” says Englander, “You don’t have to say much because she is so experienced.” And, Englander adds, “If you have just half of a story, she can complete it.” Englander did have half of a story: The Zuo Modern dining table (pictured), with a dazzling silver base cast from an old tree trunk, was the synthesis for Englander’s vision. The original oval-shaped tabletop was traded for a hexagonal piece of glass with more contemporary angles – and, also, some space-saving magic. The geo edges define six seating areas, affording room for four everyday-use chairs and two Interlude metal side tables, cleverly used as stools. “This space,” Knapp explains, “is graphic and organic, all at the same time.” Clean lines found in the table, long drapes and purposefully placed mirrors and ottomans contrast beautifully with round features: that curvy cowhide rug, wall-mounted teardrop vases, a blown-glass bowl centerpiece, the Memphis-style console with its silver arced base – even an Egyptian cartouche made by Englander’s daughter, which integrates flawlessly. “Every wall has something interesting on top of it, so your eye moves around,” Knapp says. Up above, Englander is especially fond of the Currey & Company chandelier with its eye-catching, dangling globed tips. “CJ opened up my eyes to fixtures being accent pieces that you can weave into your furniture choices,” says Englander, who advises fellow homeowners: “Don’t be afraid to try contemporary in a traditional space.” This room was a huge success, though Englander admits, “to take a more traditional home and make it modern is a little scary. Unless,” she adds, “you have somebody like CJ who knows what they’re doing.” See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

A Central West End couple modernized their historic home to make it more functional for their family of six By Melissa Mauzy Photography by Anne Matheis
Situated along a quiet tree-lined street in a quaint Central West End neighborhood is an exquisite historic home. A home the Slentz family fell in love with after moving to St. Louis from Montréal, Quebec. Familiar with a city environment conducive to walking to shops, restaurants and parks, the family immediately fell in love with the area. The home itself accommodated the space the family of six required and had the open feel they were looking for, but some aspects weren’t functional. “Some parts of the home were very formal and fancy, but it was nothing that a change of furnishings and paint couldn’t take care of,” says Danielle Slentz. So the Slentzs set out to update the home with more contemporary furnishings and décor that would bring the formal, adult home into a family-friendly space. Walking into the grand entryway, the home is filled with beautiful, natural light with an open feeling and high ceilings. To the left of the entryway is the formal living room or salon. When the family purchased the home, the room was painted in tones of peach and yellow, and the columns were covered in faux marble. Paint colors were swapped out

for more soothing neutral tones in whites, grays and taupes. Behind the fireplace, the peach-painted imported 17th century French motifs were painted taupe to tone down the color. “I thought we’d get rid of the motifs until I found out they were historic, so we didn’t want to remove them,” Slentz says. Lighter and softer furnishings were incorporated to bring a contemporary flair to the space. A colorful rug from Halbert Rugs brings a punch of color under the otherwise neutral seating grouping. The original window treatments remain intact. The homeowners found that once they toned down the paint colors, the treatments really shine in the room. Now a space where the children practice piano and the family enjoys Christmas breakfast, the living room has become more useable and family friendly. Another space that the family modernized is the family room. Previously used as a men’s study, the room had heavy furniture and dark burgundy window treatments. By incorporating more comfortable furniture and swapping the dark treatments for blinds, the space is

now less of a library/men’s smoking room and more of a place for the family to hang out, do homework and watch TV. “We didn’t really want to purchase a home where we had to change too much structurally,” Slentz explains. “We liked this home for the way it was, we just needed to add a little paint.” Perhaps the largest transformation in the home was to the kitchen/ breakfast room. Once a small kitchen with an attached wine room, the homeowners found that it just wasn’t functional for a family of six to cook and eat. By converting the wine room into a breakfast area, the family now has a space to dine together or for the children to do homework while mom or dad cook dinner. In the kitchen, Markway Construction along with designer Fifi Lugo transformed the space with new white cabinets, floors and a stainless steel range hood. The simple cabinetry, hidden appliances and honed
marble countertops give the kitchen a historic feel. As construction got underway, the homeowners discovered that the ceiling in the wine room had been lowered and the full height of the window had been covered over to give the space a more authentic wine-room feel. By raising the ceilings and exposing the windows to their full height, the space is now flooded with natural light. Inspired by time spent living in Australia, bringing in light and opening the inside to the outside was important to the homeowners. Content in their modernly updated home, the homeowners now enjoy its beauty and functionality. “It used to be that the front of the home all flowed and was good for entertaining while the back of the home was only practical for preparing,” Slentz says, “Now the whole home is functional for our family.” See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

Create texture and drama in any space by exposing a brick wall. By Melissa Mauzy
Homeowners and designers everywhere are taking a modern approach to an age-old traditional trade by exposing and restoring brick accent walls in homes, condos, lofts and more. A brick accent walls add character to a space. The design element soared in popularity in the late 1900s, as it was less expensive to expose the brick than to repair or replace the wall. Today, the look is versatile with all design styles, whether traditional or contemporary, as well as in most spaces in your home from kitchens to bathrooms to living areas. Brick will blend with most color schemes, and exposing the brick on an accent wall adds texture. To get the look, try exposing only one wall or space in your home.
74
Too much brick can get overwhelming, but utilizing it as a focal point in a room will produce just enough interest. In many older homes, you can typically find brick underneath the plaster walls. Brick has a beautiful, natural quality to it, and while attractive, you don’t have to leave it natural. Most brick can be whitewashed, glazed or painted to better complement your existing décor, or try exposing part of the wall and painting the other two sides to give a striped effect. No matter the space or style, incorporating brick into your décor will add a fresh, attractive focal point to your home. See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

Greenberg Van Doren Gallery, Saint Louis, Missouri By Melissa Mauzy Photography by Jordi Miralles
An existing three-story building was renovated and converted to The Greenberg Van Doren Gallery, located at 3540 Washington Avenue, by Slade Architecture. The goal of the project was to provide gallery space, offices and storage for the art gallery. The ground floor serves as the public gallery and loading area. The floor and ceiling were kept rough. The second floor is divided into three separate spaces. The western zone is the library conference room and the private offices of the two partners. The eastern zone of the space is the support
space. It includes offices, copy/supply room, toilets, kitchenette, and stairway. The central zone serves as an informal gallery and the link between the east and west sides. A new double-height skylight and a 24-foot-tall display wall define it. At night the membrane that encloses the skylight opening glows with lighting concealed behind the membrane. The third floor is divided into a gallery space and support spaces for photography, a shop and art storage areas.
The Corner, Missoula, Montana By Caroline Michler Photography by Mark Bryant
Structural steel, 25,000-board feet of reclaimed African mahogany, fir, pine and a view of the mountains in the distance give the Corner Condominium its green feel. The architect and owner, Eric Hefty, used the materials to make cabinets, doors, flooring and trim. Hefty used every inch possible for the project. The space features high ceilings in the kitchen, living and dining rooms and low ceilings in the bedroom and bathrooms. To achieve the design, they used multiple
80
staggered floors with split levels. The Cor-ten steel will oxidize from exposure to the environment, especially in the arid climate of Montana, and its color will develop over time. The Corner sits at the end of a commercial area featuring a brewery, restaurants and locally owned shops known as the “Hip Strip and houses both residential and commercial units.

Old Jaffa, Tel Aviv, Israel By Samantha Hubbard, Photography by Amit Geron
Above the Old Jaffa harbor sits a 180-square-meter residential home that faces west, opening towards the expansive Mediterranean Sea. Once damaged from a past stretching over a century, Pitsou Kedem Architects and designers Pitsou Kedem, Raz Melamed and Irene Goldberg have renovated the palatial home to incorporate the historical asceticism with contemporary minimalism. Staying true to the founding structural characteristics, the renovators kept the arches, the stonewalls and the segmented ceilings. They also
revealed and preserved the original material of the building, a textured mixture of broken clay pottery and shell-filled beach sand. To adapt the home to the modern period, minimalistic elements such as stainless steel, iron, wire cables, Korean decoration and distinct glass windows in an array of sizes were added to the structure, as well as altering the internal flow to be more spacious, open and free. The mixture of styles comes together in a harmoniously balanced home that honors its historical values while staying relevant in the present day. STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM MARCH 2014

Is it a classic or is it a craze?
For our March Modern issue, we asked local design professionals about wallpaper. Here is what they had to say…
classic “Even though the popularity of wallpaper has waxed and waned over the years I believe that wallpaper is classic. It has withstood the test of time, it has been used in both contemporary and traditional environments and it has been the perfect solution for many design applications. Wallpaper will always be used as an element in design.” Davey Mayer, Davette J. Mayer, Designer L.L.C. “CLASSIC! Wallpaper has been an important design tool since the 15th century, and I don’t see it disappearing anytime soon. I love it in so many different applications: In a powder room or entryway, on the ceiling, as an accent wall, behind shelves for interest…. the list goes on. The patterns themselves have evolved with time and fashion from the earliest damasks and brocades, to chinoiserie, flocked, metallic, graphics, textures, etc., that now there is a wallpaper for every style of décor from the most traditional to the sleekest contemporary. Plus the paper itself has improved so that the application and removal processes are much easier and cleaner. This design element is here to stay!” Jenny Rapp, JCR Design.
“Classic, no question. It has adorned our walls for centuries, yet it keeps being reinvented with amazing patterns and textures. It can go from extremely traditional to ultra contemporary, intensely bold to remarkably subtle, and I can’t imagine design without it. Still, if you are nervous about filling your entire room, wallpapering the back of a bookcase is a great way to introduce interest without much commitment. “ Kimberly Kowalski, Savvy Surrounding Style “I think it is a classic because wallpaper has the advantage of adding pattern, texture or light reflective qualities unlike paint. It can give a boring powder room punch by applying a bold pattern wallpaper. A fabulous scenic paper in a dining room or an updated geometric print can make the room both cozy and interesting enhancing dining with friends and family. A simple grasscloth can add texture to a library or office. The creative qualities of wallpaper are endless.” Lynn Eastin, Lynn Eastin Interiors.
