slhl HELLO

Don't paint a wall a color you wouldn't wear! Color is a personal choice that can evoke feelings and memories. The color red might elicit memories of the dress you wore on your first date with your husband. Green was the color of the outfit you brought your first child home from the hospital in. Blue was the color of your first car. Draw inspiration from colors that give you a warm and happy feeling when it comes to the interiors of your home. If you would never wear a particular color, don't paint a wall that color. With a rainbow of options, color can sometimes just be overwhelming! How can I have too much color? How do I know if a color is right in a particular space? Below are a few tips that I have picked up from designers, books or magazines to use as a guide. But your best bet in getting color right is to hire a professional designer and get it right the first time. • Colors don't need to be bright or bold to make a big impact in a space. • Too many colors can make a room look busy or cluttered. • Limit the number of colors in a room to no more than three or four. • Add color to liven things up; subtract it to calm things down. • Bright graphic artwork will make a statement in any room. • Paint one wall a color and leave the others white. • Color packs an extra punch when used against white walls. • Change the color scheme of a room by simply swapping out the accessories. • Classic black-and-white area rugs and artwork can ensure that color doesn't overwhelm. • Black is best used as an accent.

Photography by Colin Miller/Strauss Peyton

Get ready to be overwhelmed by the power of color in this issue! From simple splashes to total saturation, color is everywhere and all around interiors in St. Louis.

slhl STYLE MAKER

Tamsin Mascetti, owner and designer at

Color Connoisseur

Tamsin Design Group, shows you how incorporating color can be fun and stimulating to any space.

edited BY MELISSA MAUZY Photography BY colin miller/strauss peyton

Tamsin has a B.S. in Interior Design and nearly 20 years of design expertise and knowledge. Her firm specializes in residential and commercial interior design. Tamsin is an award-winning designer in Chicago and the St. Louis area and has had several projects published. SLHL: What is the biggest mistake homeowners make with color? Tamsin: Homeowners are often not gutsy enough with color. Even though they may love a certain color, they are reluctant to introduce it to their living spaces. It is a fact that you’re happier and more productive when you are surrounded by colors that resonate with you. So introduce that fuchsia, emerald green or tangerine – whatever makes you happy! SLHL: What do you suggest to a homeowner who is scared of too much color? Tamsin: Paint is a relatively cheap fix. Pick a new shade for an accent wall. Paint a bedside table or accent chair. Or buy fresh pillows, kitchen accessories or window treatments to bring in color in small doses. SLHL: What are your thoughts on colored furniture? How can you make a piece work? Tamsin: Painted furniture is a fresh look that adds personality to any room. A piece of painted furniture helps give a room a gradually collected appearance rather than the matchy-match look that is so outdated.

30

SLHL: What is the latest design craze for 2014? Tamsin: What I love about 2014 is that anything goes! I don't think you will look back at this time period and find it to be as easily identifiable as say the 70s, 80s or 90s. It's not about putting styles in fixed categories like traditional, rustic, modern or bohemian. This year will represent an eclectic mix of styles and influences. Find pieces that speak to you, and have fun! SLHL: What tips do you have for the homeowner who likes to constantly change things up? Tamsin: Why not? Change is fun and stimulating. If you can afford it, go all out and express yourself! If you’re more budget-challenged, select smaller, more inexpensive changes to fulfill your yearning for the new and original. SLHL: What trends are you seeing in color? Tamsin: The color of the year is orchid, and there will be beaucoup accessories in the stores. Orchid is a great, fresh color that can trend warm or cool, but if it’s not your style go to your heart’s desire. Navy lue is also trending because of its versatility to blend with other colors and styles. It's a classic look that can serve as the backdrop to almost anything. Also hot: cayenne, sand, mint green and pale blue. See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

slhl ARTIST

Reinvented Regionalism

Speaking for nature one brush stroke at a time.

By Samantha Hubbard

Photography by Colin Miller/Strauss Peyton

With simple acrylics and an open canvas, Bryan Haynes paints life into Missouri landscapes, awakening an interpretation rooted in both the past and present. After years of travel and education, Haynes moved back to his home state of Missouri and settled in an area surrounded by towering trees in lush forests and an endless stretch of rolling plains. Inspiration beamed through every window and burst through every open door. A mastery of the tools and techniques of paint allowed Haynes to create deeper meaning in his art, and soon, his paintings began to echo the style of 1930s Regionalism. “It really wasn’t on purpose, it just kind of percolated over the years,” says Haynes. “It’s almost as if the Missouri landscape

suggests forms for a representational artist to include in his or her work.” Understanding what the Regionalist artists of the 1930s saw in this rural landscape has spiraled Haynes into a revitalized style of his own. Also doubling as the title for his recent book, Haynes’“New Regionalism” style resonates with most because it speaks of memories uncluttered by technology. “We all desire to look back a little bit and feel something familiar and handmade,” says Haynes. In his art, he lets the sweeping landscapes set the stage for the figures that belong there. Each piece is unique in its message to the viewer because the interpretation is combined with personal experience.

As Haynes understands and develops his style, he has realized that it fits in with an even larger movement of this generation. His New Regionalism art style parallels common trends in current society, such as the locavore food movement, the slow food movement, farmers markets and the resurgence of handcrafted items, says Haynes. As technology advances and the digital world becomes more prominent, there is an equally prevalent need for local community and a presence with nature. Nestled in nature and true to his technique, Haynes still could not ignore the looming technological boom. Digital illustrators popped up with every new generation. As his traditional illustration continued to advance, he also

taught himself from scratch how to bring his style onto the illuminated computer screen. Yet every illustration Haynes completes, traditional or digital, begins with a hand-drawn sketch. “The computer is such a powerful tool that you can let it take over with really fancy effects and so forth,” says Haynes. “But you have to keep your idea in mind and not stray from your basic, simple concept.” The digital canvas comes with thousands of colors and a tool for every texture, but a handmade traditional illustration made from simple colors, acrylic paint and the movement of a brush on a canvas is timeless. Tagliatelle Bolognese

Carrying on the culinary tradition their parents started in 1989, the Pietoso brothers along with childhood friend and chef Jon Berger are dishing up house-made pastas at Town & Country’s Napoli 2. Ande and Tye Pietoso were born into the restaurant business. Jon Berger arrived as a young teenager and never left. The Pietosos’ parents, Tony and Kathy, opened Cafe Napoli in Clayton in 1989, when Ande was 8 years old and Tye was 6. “We’d fall asleep under the booths and wake up in our beds,” Ande Pietoso says. As the boys got older, they began to help out at the restaurant. “Our friends – they knew if they wanted to be our closest friends, if an employee didn’t show up one day, they were going to be there busing or washing dishes,” Pietoso says. Berger was Tye’s friend, and he answered the call for help. “I started as a dishwasher,” he says. “We were probably in 8th grade.” His occasional shift as a dishwasher evolved into a career, and he’s been cooking at the Pietosos’ restaurants ever since. He’s now executive chef at Napoli 2, which opened in 2008 in Town and Country. “Jon, he’s so well rounded,” says Ande, Napoli 2’s general manager. “In Clayton, he managed the bar, bused, waited tables, cooked, everything.” Berger also is a certified sommelier, one of three on staff at Napoli 2. Tye Pietoso runs Cafe Napoli. The family also owns Bar Napoli, which opened in 2003. Napoli 2’s menu changes with the seasons, and all the pastas are made in-house. Lasagna is one of the most popular dishes, Berger says, even though

it’s only on the menu during the cold months. Year round, however, if a diner with a craving for lasagna requests it in advance, Berger will prepare it as that day’s special. Berger enjoys crafting menus and developing recipes. One of Napoli 2’s regulars is a businessman who likes to arrange dinners featuring a surprise ingredient, which Berger uses throughout a five- or six-course

dinner. The featured ingredients have ranged from bacon to octopus to lotus root. Berger learned on the job, and he scours cookbooks, magazines and YouTube for inspiration. “The best thing about Jon, it’s not like it’s a job for him; it’s a passion,” Pietoso says. “That makes it fun for us here.” See www.stlouishomesmag.com for more information.

A love of color set the tone for this dynamic residence in Soulard where contemporary and historic stylings combine.

The

instant you meet homeowners Eric and Leah Sutphen, their colorful personalities and warm spirits immediately light up the room. So it is no surprise that their Soulard residence is bursting with that same color and character. Not afraid to let their love of vibrant tones shine, their three-story home is an eclectic mix of historic

46

and contemporary. When the couple began their search for a home, there was no question the area they would look. “Eric and I met in Soulard, and it's where we gravitated towards,” says Leah. The walkability of the neighborhood was also a big plus. "Soulard is the land of Bohemia," quips Eric. "Live blues music, great food, charming historic architecture, art galleries, night life and so much more." With Leah relocating from Paducah, KY, and Eric from West County, the city lifestyle was one the couple both desired. Built sometime during the pre-Civil War/Civil War era, the couple knew this house was the one the instant they walked in. “At one point, Leah and I looked at each other and it was electric. We both said at the

same time, 'This is it.'" Eric exclaims. The main floor had an open concept and a natural flow, while the two upper levels gave them the space they needed to accommodate their children when they came to visit. At one point, the home had been converted to a multifamily unit with at least three separate residences. Rehabbed in 2002 by City Lights Design, the home was updated with modern conveniences while retaining its historic charm. Both Leah and Eric appreciated the historic detailing of the home, but they knew they would have to make it work with their more contemporary aesthetic and lots of color. "We wanted to maintain the historic aspects of the home yet jazz it up," Eric says. "I like the contrast

between restoration and industrial with a formal, elegant look." When they bought the house it was painted in shades of tans and taupes, but Leah and Eric are color people. “Luckily, the first time I walked into Eric’s previous home he had lots of color, so I knew it would work,” Leah laughs. To help the couple blend their style and colors, they enlisted Leah’s friend and interior designer from Paducah, Kenn Gray. “We really depended on Kenn to help mix our contemporary style with the historic home,” Leah explains. Starting with a palette of oranges, greens, reds and grays – colors Leah always loved – the design began to take shape. Kenn was inspired by STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM APRIL 2014

nature and took a very organic approach in the color and design. “I love it when a client isn’t afraid of color,” he explains. “But your eye needs to be able to move about the space in a flowing fashion.” To keep the home from feeling too oversaturated, Kenn stuck with the same hues, but used softer versions in certain spaces. As soon as you walk through the front door, you are surrounded by a cheerful pop of pale yellow in the foyer. Leah and Eric aimed to recreate the feeling they felt the first time they walked into the home and wanted this space to set the tone for the rest of the home’s design. Paintable wallpaper in rich butter adorns the staircase wall and extends up to the second floor. The paper’s motif is a contemporary version of a historic theme. The yellow is repeated in the ceiling color in the foyer as well as the adjacent living room and dining room. With so much color in many of the spaces, painting the ceilings the same hue brings consistency and ties the rooms together. In the living room, shades of green are accented by orange and

yellow. “The living room is the heart of the home and was on the small side, so furniture placement was key,” Leah explains. Instead of bringing in color via the walls, Kenn created a pear-hued seating area with two Ethan Allen Turner swivel chairs in a Westerly pear fabric and an Ethan Allen sofa in chartreuse green with cream welting. The biggest challenge the designer faced was the window treatments. Because the home had been divided into multiple units, the front façade had off-center windows and old doorways that had been closed off. From the inside the living room and dining room windows weren’t symmetrical. To mask the asymmetrical look, Kenn created a window

treatment in chartreuse green silk that extends all the way across the wall. The use of a bright lemon sheer lining sewn to the ends of the larger panels gives a contemporary effect. A similar window treatment is used in the conjoining dining room. The focal point of the space is the faux Venetian plaster wallpaper in a rouge red. “This is one of the ways I hearkened back to the history of the property while creating an opportunity for a more contemporary pattern and texture,” Kenn explains. The wall serves as the backdrop for family gatherings around the Ethan Allen dining table. which is a real nod to the past with its design evoking an Art Nouveau motif. The kitchen was one of the only spaces the homeowners did not change. Already updated with modern conveniences, the space only needed a touch of their style to make it complete. A round breakfast room table that belonged to Leah’s mother was made more contemporary by painting the top black. Vibrantly patterned sorbet slipcovers in a modern Moroccan motif were placed over the chairs to complement the color schemes in the dining room and living room.

On the second floor, the homeowners wanted their master suite to feel like a retreat, a place where they could escape to relax. When Kenn suggested a blue/gray for the basis of the color scheme, Leah and Eric were a bit hesitant, but in the end the couple really love the look. “The rest of the home is so colorful,” Kenn explains. “We needed the bedroom to be a bit more tranquil and more spa-like.” The entrance to the room includes a cozy reading nook where Leah loves to curl up with a good book. The original light fixtures were kept intact and Kenn mimicked the fixture's scroll in the wallpaper. The

flocked paper has the feel of an older era, but it is more contemporary with the metallic finish and sand instead of velvet – just another way Kenn juxtaposes a contemporary atmosphere in a historic space. In the bedroom, a brilliant and bright pop of orange satisfies Eric and Leah’s desire for color. Two antique chairs placed in front of the fireplace were Leah’s great-grandparents' and came from her place in Paducah. “I knew I wanted to incorporate them in this home,” Leah says. She loves how Kenn worked them into the color palette in the bedroom, while the color also ties in with the main level of the home.

Creating a home that truly reflects their personalities and style, Leah and Eric, along with their designer Kenn Gray, were careful to not negate the historical nature of the home but add a contemporary look to it. The result is a lively dose of color and sophistication in their dynamic Soulard residence. See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

LIVING IN “TECHNO”

Web browsing made it easy for the designer and homeowner to coordinate their visions for this color-filled Clayton residence. By Barb Wilson Photography by Anne Matheis

Internet technology has virtually revolutionized the interior design industry over the past decade. In fact, a recent ASID (American Society of Interior Designers) study determined that more than 90 percent of designers use the Web regularly to research the latest trends, products and resources. For designer Kimberly Kowalski, now with Savvy Surrounding Style, and homeowner Anne Marie Abdulrauf, comparing the furnishings and concepts they found on local vendors' websites not only simplified the process, but “built trust and was great fun.” Formerly from Manhattan, Anne Marie is a speech-language pathologist, currently working with toddlers. Husband Saleem is an internationally renowned neurosurgeon, chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at Saint Louis University and developer of the lifesaving brain bypass technique named for him. The couple purchased their fashionable mid-rise in downtown Clayton two years ago, and it showcases their zest for color, treasures acquired during their worldwide travels and their vibrant cosmopolitan lifestyle. Brought together by their respective careers, the Abdulraufs are wonderfully warm and energetic. They entertain frequently – up to 80 guests at a time, and it was the need for more entertainment space that prompted their move to the 4,000-square-foot two-story. “And we both love the Clayton environment, particularly all the parks and restaurants,” Anne Marie adds. With its soaring ceilings, arched windows, elaborate woodwork and three balconies, the Abdulraufs’ newly acquired home required no structural changes, but the interior décor presented a “color issue.” “We’d already decided to purchase all-new furnishings, and we wanted something contemporary, glamorous, bright and fun – a home that reflects our tastes,” Anne Marie explains. A friend referred her to Kimberly, who instantly determined that the new décor would have to be “very current, as stylish as her clients.” First on the list was a fresh STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM APRIL 2014

color for the living room walls, which were a conservative mushroom hue. It was Saleem who suggested Tiffany blue, a choice that inspired the flair now evident throughout the home. Noting that she tries to “design through the eyes of guests, creating nooks that make people feel comfortable,” Kimberly separated the living room’s elongated dimensions into two seating areas. Boldly contemporary, the larger area is furnished with a bone

leather sofa and settees, set on a Safavieh wool rug with a near-Tiffany blue background and ivory medallions. Suspended above the hexagonal chrome-and-glass coffee table, a massive, 4-foot chrome chandelier from Metro Lighting is the focal point for this space and, in Kimberly’s words, “makes the room feel more intimate and grounded.” Other key pieces include a mahogany/ rosewood entertainment center and matching console with silver-leaf

The smaller area is arranged around the living room’s marble-tiled, see-through fireplace and features a chaise longue upholstered in a silvery taupe, nailhead-trimmed side chairs in lemon-yellow and silver-gray damask, a marble-topped coffee table and a Surya rug in a textured, tone-on-tone ivory animal print.

Adding visual interest to this cozy conversation nook are an African feather headdress, centered above the fireplace, and a vivid Peacock Throne wall hanging from India, hand-embroidered and set with semiprecious stones. “Saleem and I convinced a jewelry store owner in Agra to sell it to us,” Anne Marie remembers, with a secretive smile. Color abounds in the adjacent library/sitting room as well, with its Surya wool rug in an over-scale contemporary paisley, Chesterfield STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM APRIL 2014

In the dining room, rich brick-red walls provide a dramatic background for the espresso-stained mahogany pedestal table, sleek dining chairs in tufted oyster velvet and a classic buffet and china cabinet. Mementos from the owners’ travels, accent pieces include a table runner from Bali; an ebony and mother-of-pearl centerpiece, crafted by artisans whose ancestors inlaid the Taj Mahal; a framed embroidered silk from Beijing, and a hand-painted tea service from Romania. Few changes were necessary in the island kitchen, which has mahogany cabinetry, deluxe appliances, a built-in china hutch and a fresh-air balcony the owners use for grilling. Carved, high-back bar stools were chosen for the island overhang, and a marble-topped bistro set creates the perfect spot for quick snacks or morning coffee. Somewhat more traditional, the guest bedroom displays a Caribbean-inspired wrought-iron bedframe, a classic Ralph Lauren spread in a coral print and a 70-year-old inlaid cedar chest that belonged to Anne Marie’s grandmother. Tucked into the room’s architectural alcove is an additional twin bed, topped with two floral quilts, one from Sundance, the other handmade by a relative.

Doubling as Anne Marie’s office and extra guest space, the barrel-vaulted loft has two intriguing structural elements – a huge demilune window offering a fabulous view of downtown Clayton and a ledge sizable enough to accommodate a futon with chocolate bedding and kiwi-colored pillows for a splash of color. It’s been said that “color is the purest form of expression.” And although Internet technology has significantly broadened the scope and dimension of the interior design field, this ultra-chic residence proves that it still takes the skill of a designer like Kimberly to capture and express the owners’ unique character. Layers of

Labor & Love Unwind and escape the everyday in the series of breathtaking spaces created by horticulturist and garden designer Chuck Beard.

By Lucyann Boston Photography by Kim Dillon

Chuck Beard is a man who practices what he preaches. A horticulturist and garden designer, he has spent nearly 27 years creating beautiful gardens throughout St. Louis. But perhaps the most beautiful testimonial to his talent has been in his own yard. Featured in numerous national publications and on prestigious garden tours, the Webster Groves home and landscape he shared with his longtime partner the late Charles Parrish, and then Adrian Keys, moves visitors through a series of breathtakingly beautiful spaces and pathways different in style, yet cohesive in flow. A shady walkway from the front yard leads to an arbor gate. Open the gate and you are in a fountain-centered, brick courtyard with a New Orleans ambiance. Go through an arbor on the opposite side of the courtyard and you step into a Japanese garden, complete with a crooked bridge, koi pond and waterfall. From there, stroll through a sidewalk café set with a table and chairs for a bite to eat, move on to a rustic walk through the back of the yard. Eventually, find your way to a tropical paradise, where lush foliage surrounds a saltwater, free-form pool with the azure hue of a natural pond. His theory of garden design, Chuck explains, “is to create spaces where people can go, dream and escape their regular lives. Everyday life is hectic, and the stress can overcome you. If you can find a little corner to sit and watch the birds, soak up a bit of sun or enjoy a cocktail in the shade, you can get away from the stress. I want people to be able to get away from what is bothering them, maybe get their hands dirty if they enjoy gardening, relax and dream.”

Chuck Beard's Webster Groves garden is made up of numerous beautiful spaces that flow together as one. Step through an arbor in the side garden and emerge into a Japanese landscape complete with a crooked bridge, koi pond and waterfall. Moss covered concrete balls provide a stark contrast to the lacy foliage of a Japanese maple and punctuate a shady stroll through the back of the garden.

The sound of splashing water is a key element in any garden he designs, Chuck adds. “I like to use water because the minute you hear the sound your stress level goes down. The splashing masks the sounds of everyday life and transports you to another world.” His years creating gardens for others and for himself have led him to feature plants that serve more than one purpose. “For a plant to make it into the garden palate, it has to have several seasons of interest,” Chuck emphasizes. “Evergreen foliage, blossoms and then berries, fragrance…they have to perform throughout the seasons…for several seasons. To make the grade, a plant has to be able to handle the worst that St. Louis can throw at it, both summer and winter, and still look good.” Some of his favorites include: false cypress (Chamaecyparis) evergreens for the fernlike foliage and wide variety of shapes, colors and textures; boxwoods, which in addition to being evergreen have a small flower in early spring with a lovely fragrance; azaleas for their spring flowers, fall color and winter foliage; aucubas for their evergreen tropical-like foliage and adaptability to everything but soggy conditions, and nandinas for their lacy, evergreen foliage, showy white blossoms and red fall color and berries. Two particular evergreen shrub favorites are "Green Giant" arborvitaes and smaller "Graham Blandy" boxwoods. Both are hardy in the St. Louis climate and have narrow, vertical growth patterns that work well in many landscaping situations. Chuck’s design philosophy centers on the use of interesting shrubs and trees and annuals for shots of color. “Perennials are nice,” he notes, “but they take up valuable real estate and they only bloom for a short time.” He also points out the importance of creating beautiful garden views from every window in a home. “You have to think how a garden looks from inside a house, not just how it looks outside. There should be something beautiful to look at in each season of the year.” One of the biggest gardening mistakes, he believes, is not paying attention to size and scale; “planting a hemlock tree two feet from a foundation, ” he illustrates. Homeowners should “pay attention to the mature size of the plant.” Another common mistake, he notes, is not paying attention to the cultural requirements and trying to grow a sun-loving plant in the shade. “Pay attention to the plant tag,” Chuck stresses. With a solid career as a garden designer behind him, Chuck is planning to take the next logical step and pursue a degree in landscape architecture in the coming months, “because my back can’t handle the heavy work anymore,” he

frankly admits. With no local school offering a landscape architecture degree, Chuck and Adrian are relocating to Florida, where they already own a condo. “My biggest worry in moving was finding someone who would appreciate the garden and keep it up,” he admits. That worry was eased when Lynn and Alex Hromockyj came through the house last September, just after it had gone on the market. With a background in and love of gardening, Lynn had such an emotional reaction to the house and the garden, she admits being almost teary eyed after her first tour of the property. “The whole process (of seeing and buying the house) was so strange and magical,” she recalls. “Every single day when I sit in what is now our house and look out the windows I am so in awe of what Chuck has done in every inch of the garden. Alex and I feel we have a huge responsibility to maintain his beautiful plantings. Living here makes me feel as if I’m on vacation every day of the week.” See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

VegiBee

Since 2006, the United States honeybee population has drastically declined due to the overuse of chemicals, mites and environmental issues. Honeybees pollinate 30 percent of all flowering vegetables and fruits. St. Louisan Bill Whaley created the VegiBee pollinators to assist food gardeners struggling with their yield. The VegiBee allows the gardener to manually extract and collect the excess pollen from the flower, which is then used to manually pollinate all of the flowers on the plant.

Transitional Teal A colorful Clayton bathroom becomes fit for its tween occupants.

Before

before

By Jamie Siebrase Photography by Anne Matheis

When two Clayton homeowners broke ground on a major addition in the early 2000s, they left the original master bathroom untouched, repurposing it into a children’s Jack-and-Jill. But a decade later, as the room’s young occupants approached tween-hood, it was time to bring a dull, outdated space into the colorful 21st century. When Dana Dunbar of Lorrien Homes came to the scene, he wasn’t the least bit deterred by the room’s archaic archtops, plaster walls, tired fixtures and ancient plumbing – the seasoned builder is familiar with “the typical 85-year-old home in Clayton,” he says. So, Dunbar “took the place down to the studs,” adding modern wiring, plumbing, exhaust fans and a second sink for shared space comfort, connected to the first by a limestone countertop. And, while function took precedent, the homeowner happily notes, “We were still able to weave in fun and unique elements.” Most fun: the unexpected, vibrant palette. Dunbar credits the original builders for that because the entire color scheme was built around a beautiful stained-glass window thoughtfully preserved through construction. Designer Tom Manche of Tom Manche Interiors took a bold Sherwin Williams teal to the wall, then suggested lime green for an accent, which appears in painted cabinets and interchangeable décor. Given the ages and gender of the homeowners’ children, the lively

68

combination, which is bright without being overbearing, works. Adds Dunbar’s wife and business partner Diana, “The great thing about these colors is that they will remain relevant, even as the girls get older.” To balance daring hues and add texture, Dunbar incorporated geometric charcoal tile, and lined the custom-poured shower floor with gray pebbles. Frameless glass was non-negotiable. “You don’t want shower walls to enclose a small space,” says Dunbar. “When you walk into the bathroom, you want to look right through the shower to the other side of the room -- that makes the room feel longer.” Storage, too, helps maximize space. Some of the charming, original built-ins were preserved, and to create extra storage, Dunbar added clear-finish custom maple cabinetry by Duane’s Cabinets Inc. Recessed bins with curio shelving freed floor space and became a design element when Manche proposed painting the overhead structures lime. For convenient sink-side cabinets, Dunbar borrowed from kitchen design, using drawers that pull out at a 45-degree angle for discrete, small item storage. Finishing touches like the satin-nickel knobs and pulls give the overall look a transitional feel likely to stand the test of time. “Today,” the homeowner says, “This is definitely the nicest bath in the house.” See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

Gold Can Still be Found in California’s Sierra Foothills

The Kautz family strikes gold with their Ironstone Winery and Entertainment Complex. By Lorraine Raguseo Photography courtesy of Ironstone Winery

One of the most mineral-rich areas in the United States is California’s Sierra Foothills. It’s no wonder that it was ground zero for the fabled California Gold Rush of the mid-1800s. This fertile region, east and slightly north of Stockton, is home to a second gold rush of sorts that also springs from the earth. This time, the nuggets are bottles of wine. In recent years, the land comprising the Sierra Foothills have become home to vineyards yielding high-quality grapes of all varieties, from the stalwart Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, to more unique, indigenous American grapes like the white Symphony and the better-known red Zinfandel. Among the pioneers of grape-growing in the Sierra Foothills is the Kautz family, whose ancestors were German farmers who bought farmland in California in the early 1900s with a U.S. land grant. Their son, John, not only followed in his father’s farming footsteps but, through land his wife Gail’s family owned in the Sierra Foothills, started planting grapevines there in the late 1960s. By the 1990s, John had become one of the top 10 wine-grape growers in California. With three sons and one daughter coming of age to work in the family business, the Kautz family started making wines on their own in the late 1980s, under the Ironstone label. The name references the large amounts of ironstones (stones with deposits of iron running through them) found throughout the foothills.

Banitsa Ingredients: 6 – 8 eggs • 1 – 1 ½ lb Feta cheese • 1 stick of butter • Phyllo dough Directions: In a large bowl, whisk the eggs slightly. Fold the feta cheese into the whisked eggs. In a small saucepan, melt 1 stick of butter; set aside. Butter a 9 x 13 pan. Lay two sheets of phyllo dough in bottom of pan. Brush a few tablespoons of melted butter on phyllo dough. Layer 5 – 6 tablespoons of the egg/cheese mixture. Repeat layers of dough, butter and egg/cheese mixture until finished. Top with 2 – 3 sheets of phyllo dough and brush with remaining melted butter. Bake at 350° for 35-40 minutes or until golden brown and a toothpick comes out clean.

Ironstone’s fame was assured with the opening of the Ironstone Winery and Entertainment Complex in 1990. Built from scratch, it includes wine-aging caverns, a tasting room, winery and entertainment facilities that have grown to become the largest winery entertainment complex in California. All the winery's facilities were created in 1890s period style, with the winery and tasting room in the shape of a gold stamp mill. They host a variety of events, from cooking classes to an annual Concours d’Elegance car show, to art exhibits and competitions, to a summer concert series in a 7,000-seat amphitheater that has featured some of the biggest names in classic rock and country music. Recipes that Ironstone’s Executive Chef Robby Christie creates for the cooking classes and myriad events held at the winery run the cuisine gamut from Belgian endive stuffed with braised beef and roasted-garlic truffle goat cheese (French), to fried duck wontons (Chinese), to Banitsa from Bulgaria (phyllo dough filled with eggs scrambled with feta cheese). These, and all the dishes Chef Rob makes, are designed to work with the many Ironstone wines in the family’s portfolio. That strong mineral streak that especially runs through the winery’s Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon and Reserve Zinfandel informs much of his cooking. The Kautz family has truly struck gold in the Sierra Foothills...and this time, it’s a bonanza we all can enjoy. See www.stlouishomesmag.com for more recipes. STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM APRIL 2014

Senior Support

Specialized sensors give you peace of mind while keeping an eye on elderly loved ones.

By Melissa Mauzy

Imagine

being able to know what your senior mother or father is doing and if they are safe even when you are hundreds or thousands of miles away. Did they get out of bed today? Did they leave the stove on? Is their smoke detector going off? Have they eaten? SmartCare Consultants, a second business started by the owners of The SOHO Shop, has developed a series of unobtrusive sensors to be placed in a senior’s room within an elderly community or residential home that will give you and family peace of mind. The concept came after founder Bryan Jefferson’s own father became ill and Bryan lived 2,000 miles away. His father slowly became depressed and lethargic. Bryan had the idea to remotely monitor his father’s daily activities by placing monitors throughout his home. He and his family were shocked by what they found. “By knowing what activity was happening in his home, we quickly realized how much TV was being watched, how long he was sleeping and that he really had timed his life around us being home,” Bryan says. “Now armed with that data, we could begin putting things in place to break these patterns and pull him out of his depression and get him active again.” Jefferson and his partners Scott Mosher and Mike Dolan began

74

developing technology that would meet the community’s needs to provide an improved level of care for the senior population. They hope their SmartCare technology will reduce guilt and provide peace of mind for families of seniors. “Families find a comfort in knowing something is being done to help improve care and to help protect their loved ones,” says Bryan. The sensors track the daily living activities of seniors and allow family members and caregivers access to the real-time data. Family members can log in, and through a customizable interface they are able to check on their loved one anytime from anywhere. Alerts also can be set up to notify the family if an anomaly occurs. A passive tracking system also can be included. The system allows family members and caregivers the ability to know exactly where their senior is at all times. The technology includes their velocity in order to immediately know if they fall, get stuck on the toilet or leave the building - all things a family wants to know in regards to their senior. “We need to care for our sick and loved ones the way we want to be cared for,” he says. “These advances today will directly impact our quality of life in the years to come.” See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

Modern

Masculine With the help of S&K Interiors, a historic home on Pestalozzi blends the old with the new. By Sara Graham Photography by Matthew Harrer Photography

A brilliant blue sofa is the focal point in the living room. The sofa defined the palette for the rest of the home.

New homeowner Jeff Hughes had followed a job opportunity from New Jersey to St. Louis. He wanted to relocate to a diverse and growing neighborhood with the “old, yet modern feel” he had grown to love in New Jersey. He knew right away that the house on Pestalozzi was the one. It was located in the heart of the city in an area currently undergoing a significant amount of renovation and was close to a beautiful park and a local bus route. Built in 1910, the home was about to undergo a complete renovation by California-based Askins Development Group, providing the perfect opportunity for Hughes to create a custom home that reflected his personal style. The renovation took just over four months to complete. Prior to that,

80

the house had not been updated for over 40 years. The original hardwood floors and stained-glass windows were preserved while new drywall, electric wiring, plumbing, heating, cooling and windows were installed. Shirley Strom and Katie Marvin, the mother and daughter design team of S&K Interiors, were eager to help Hughes grow his vision of “old blended with new,” staying true to the history of the neighborhood and St. Louis. Hughes' ultimate goal was to achieve an eclectic look mixed with modern and antique pieces. In the living room, Hughes wanted the focal point to be the sofa, and the brilliant blue defined the palette for the rest of space’s playful, yet sophisticated pieces. Complementary colors of black,

white, red and gray create a bright and welcoming space, while the sofa’s clean lines, the heft of the buffed concrete table and the studded leather wingback chairs provide masculine tones. The dining room is all about the striking table. The top consists of pounded metal pieces nailed together and finished smooth. Originally gray, the table's legs were spray-painted a glossy black to give the piece a more modern look. Paired with acrylic “moon chairs” and upholstered gray end chairs, the overall effect is urban and contemporary. Tabletop art pieces, rather than traditional candles, provide a masculine element. All interior walls surrounding the kitchen were removed, providing

a bright and open space. Colorful stools, lighting and art installations carry the design theme seamlessly into this room. During the renovation, the master suite was moved to the front of the house and a new master bath built en suite. Designed exclusively by Marvin, the space retains the desired masculine look, but is afforded a bit of softness by a looped rug and ambient task lighting. Not just a residence, the home is also used as Hughes’ home office and for social gatherings, proving this historical redesign is truly versatile and a modern-day success. Places to go, things to do and see and people who are leaving their mark on the world of style.

Yurbuds, St. Louis, Missouri Photography courtesy of Shelley Satke Niemeier, SPACE Architecture + Design

Two local companies joined forces to create a contemporary new office space in the renovated Cupples 9 building downtown. Yurbuds, a homegrown company that designs sport earphones, asked SPACE Architecture + Design to create an office of their dreams. In order to accommodate a variety of work areas, SPACE created collaboration areas,

one-person soundproof rooms and bullpen-style seating for salespeople. As a company that frequently entertains, Yurbuds also requested SPACE to design spaces that would allow entertaining. A kitchen, adjacent lounge area and conference room with pivoting, stacking glass walls overlook Busch Stadium, providing the perfect entertainment environment.

Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital, Chicago, Illinois Photography by Nick Merrick © Hedrich Blessing 2012

At 23 stories high, the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital was designed with kids in mind. Bright colors and plenty of light stream in to raise the spirits of patients and families being treated at the hospital, which was designed by architects ZGF (Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Architects LLP), Anderson Mikos and Solomon Cordwell Buenz. Themed floors provide entertainment and make the experience more child friendly. Local area museums and cultural organizations donated items, art and objects that are displayed on themed floors. For example, the ground lobby features a life-size replica of a mother whale and her calf that is suspended 24 feet in

88

the air. The aquatic theme continues with a coral reef and aquarium on the second floor. The Crown Sky Garden is located on the 11th floor. Designed by award-winning landscape architect Mikyoung Kim, the 5,000-square-foot garden has bamboo trees and vistas of the city and is a respite for patients, families and staff. The 12th floor features both a transparent tree house, where patients and their families can view the garden from above, and a real fire truck from Pierce Manufacturing equipped with sirens and lights. While no child wishes to be in the hospital, Lurie Children’s Hospital is making the experience a little less frightening.

Statoil Regional and International Offices, Fornebu, Norway After winning an open contest in 2009, Norwegian architects a-lab, a young international architecture office involved in a variety of innovative and experimental projects with global character, conceptualized the new regional and international offices for Statoil, a Norwegian energy producer. Built on land that formerly was home to the airport’s multistory car park, a large part of the site has been transformed into a publicly accessible park. The office structure consists of five similar office modules stacked on top of

each other. Each module is oriented differently to optimize internal daylight conditions and views of the landscape. The modules form an atrium and multipurpose space on the ground level. The idea for stacking the modules was to reduce the environmental footprint of the building. The offices were awarded at the 2009 World Architecture Festival Awards before completion and the 2012 World Architecture News Awards after completion.

Is it a classic or is it a craze?

For our March Modern issue, we asked local design professionals about Smart TVs. Here is what they had to say…

An Evolving

Classic

classic “Definitely a classic. I think this is just the beginning and they are going to evolve to control more and more things in your home.” Jeannie Brendel, Brendel Architects, LLC. “Smart televisions will be a classic, but it won’t necessarily be the TV that’s smart, it will most likely be the way we interface with the screen. Television manufacturers have to do a better job of communicating their ease of use, like the Apple TVs and Chromecasts have done. Consumers need ease of use and simplicity in set up, as well as to be able to better understand the benefits in order to overcome their fear of technology and television merging. Manufacturers must make it clear that utilizing smart TV technology is a safe, long-term investment that will work in a landscape of changing technologies and content services.” Scott Mosher, The SOHO Shop. “I believe that smart TVs and media streaming are here to stay. They offer an easy gateway to your favorite apps or media streaming services like Netflix, Vudu and Pandora. Gone are the days of your TV just receiving broadcast or hooking up to the cable box. We now have new and exciting options for our entertainment pleasure!” Greg Dabler, Audio Video Lifestyles.

Craze “I definitely believe that smart TVs will be a craze! Anything to do with technology changes with the times. Having a smart TV seems great, but you can’t travel with it and you can only use it in one location of that room. Not to mention, are we using the TV as a computer or to watch a movie with the family? Are we bringing our families together or pushing us apart?” Caryn L. Burstein (Babich), Arcterior Design, LLC. “Craze!!! In recent years, consumers worldwide have been yearning for a different, more interactive way to access content when entertaining themselves. TV manufacturers were definitely one of the first to jump on the opportunity, but doing more so I think because it was a quick and cheap way to add items to the “features” column, thus forgetting the “benefits” side of the equation. The “Smart TV” has however opened up the new era of devices we will see more and more of… the Internet of things!” Mike Dolan, The SOHO Shop.
