slhl HELLO

Is everyone wearing marsala-colored lipstick? PHOTOGRAPHY BY COLIN MILLER/STRAUSS PEYTON

I was at the cosmetic counter purchasing some eyeliner when the saleswoman complimented me on my skirt. "It’s marsala, and thanks," I replied. I shared with her that I was on my way to get my picture taken for the color issue, and I was out of eyeliner. Our conversation fl wed to how the Pantone color of the year, marsala, extends beyond the home into the fashion and makeup industry. She asked if I wanted to see the marsala lipstick because it would be perfect for the photo shoot. I replied, "Okay. I like it. I'll get some... they're sold out! What?" Normally every year I quickly take to the Pantone color of the year. This year, it has taken me a bit longer to embrace marsala, the brownish-red color of 2015. I've learned along the way, though, that by incorporating the color of the year into any project it immediately adds a little pizazz and trendiness to a home (page 12). Besides the addition of a sole marsala pillow, I'm painting one wall of my dining room marsala. I think I have the spring-cleaning bug. After attending the Design & Garden Bloggers Conference in Atlanta, GA, last month and listening to Nate Berkus, international designer and TV design star, and Bunny Williams, renowned interior designer, I became so inspired that I went home and rearranged my living room much to my husband’s chagrin. We repositioned all but one furniture piece, turned end tables the opposite way, removed accessories and brought in pieces from other rooms. I feel like I have a whole new room. Layering is the key. By incorporating meaningful items of different colors, shapes and textures into your room the end result evolves into a well-designed space. And what works to everyone's advantage are the mixing rules of what goes with what have been thrown out the window! If the room now brings you joy...you've nailed it. Each featured homeowner in this issue brings color into their homes with their own unique style. The urban home of John and Laurie LeBoeuf takes full advantage mixing shapes and textures producing an interior that screams, “I'm small and beautiful!” (page 38). From the small makeovers to major life changes, we share the impactful role color has on our everyday life. Whether the influ nce of color is discrete or bold, it can quite often make our day. Spring is finally here, making the long-anticipated outdoor color explosion well worth the wait!

ANNE TIPTON, OWNER OF

Conquering Color

Locally owned for 27 years, the Expressions custom options offer styles, fabrics and expertise to help you express yourself! Design consultants work with you to identify your distinct style. The showroom offers furniture, fabrics and accessories celebrating design and color. Stop in to sit, touch and experience the variety of possibilities the store offers to create a home uniquely yours. SLHL: How do you establish a color palette? Anne: Many clients visit Expressions with a favorite color in mind, often inspired by a pillow, art, rug, magazine clipping or Pinterest. Others are looking for that inspiration! We delve into the intended “feel” of the room, which often provides direction for color and content. Our team listens to our customers in order to identify needs and provide options. We pride ourselves on our amazing fabrics, hues, textures and custom finishe , and design a plan just for them. SLHL: What tips do you have for mixing various colors and fabric patterns? Anne: Mixing allows the homeowner to express their personality. Don’t be intimidated! Florals, stripes, plaids, solids and paisleys can be combined to create a fresh, fun look. Scale and proportion are the secret to pattern harmony – we marry fabric to the size of the frame. The easiest way to mix patterns is to start with a solid or neutral base and add flair f om there.

20

EXPRESSIONS FURNITURE, SHARES TIPS TO BRING COLOR INTO HOME FURNISHINGS. EDITED BY MELISSA MAUZY PHOTOGRAPHY BY COLIN MILLER/STRAUSS PEYTON

SLHL: What advice do you give to a customer who is afraid of color or looking to make a bold color statement? Anne: Orange is the new black, and color is the new neutral! Start small — add colorful pieces to your existing room like a lemon leather chair, a floral ottoman or an orange lamp. If you’re ready to take the plunge, a red leather sectional or a vintage purple rug adds a sophisticated “wow” factor and a pop of personality. SLHL: Do you follow color trends? Anne: Yes and no! Today’s runway looks are refle ted in tomorrow’s fabric selections. We constantly update our offerings to refle t what’s happening now in color, texture and fashion. We’re knowledgeable about trends, but we realize trends come and go. This philosophy sets us apart from national chains whose catalogs and retail stores only cater to “what’s now.” Expressions’ customers appreciate our combination of “fashion forward” and timeless furniture. We know great style lasts forever and are dedicated to helping you find ours! SLHL: How does your showroom differ from others? Anne: There’s no other store in St. Louis that is like Expressions! We truly have something for everyone. Celebrating color, our showroom allows our customers to immerse themselves in comfort and creativity. Our displays show how you can mix and match style, texture and finishings to create a room, and a home, that celebrates you. See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

EXPLORATION PAINT AND SCULPTURE INTERSECT IN BRANDON ANSCHULTZ’S COLORFUL CREATIONS. BY KELLIE HYNES PHOTOGRAPHY BY COLIN MILLER/STRAUSS PEYTON

The framed picture sits on Brandon Anschultz’s desk. It is a small abstract drawing, featuring neatly outlined, colorful globes. Anschultz created it when he was 5 or 6 years old, an age when most budding artists are in their Scribble Period. “You can’t get away from yourself when you’re doing artwork. You always fall back to what you do. I’m still doing the same things as an artist that I was doing when I was that little kid,” Anschultz laughs. Well, not exactly. While Anschultz continues to explore color and color theory, he has left the crayons behind. When he is not working as the director of the Des Lee Gallery, which is Washington University’s student and alumni gallery, Anschultz is creating art in his bright

22

Lafayette Square studio. The sculptures at the heart of the studio immediately capture your eye. There are at least 40 of them, dangling from wires, waiting to be dunked into vats of latex paint. Anschultz begins each sculpture with a core, which can be anything from a dowel rod to a ball of faux fur. (Laumeier Sculpture Park recently gave Anschultz some pieces of stair railings, which are now at the center of some of his newer sculptures.) He dips the core into the paint, and allows it to dry. Each sculpture is dunked hundreds of times over the course of a year. When Anschultz decides the sculpture is finishe , he breaks it open, exposing rings of paint that resemble the cross section of a vibrant tree. Anschultz

APRIL 2015 STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM

ARTIST_0415.indd 22

showed his sculptures at The Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis last year, displaying them on intricate wooden pedestals that he also personally crafted. Dozens of Anschultz’s paintings hang on the north wall of his studio. Like the sculptures, the paintings are also three-dimensional works in progress. “They’re accumulations. They’re about adding and adding,” Anschultz says. While the colors in his sculptures are layered, the colors on his paintings are each placed in full view, to be studied as they relate to each other. “Some of these colors are beautiful, and others thump you in the eye. The colors that aren’t quite complementary, they really vibrate,” Anschultz explains.

When asked about the most challenging aspect of his work, Anschultz says, “The hardest part is making it financially sustainable. It’s not a cheap endeavor. After the financial meltdown, which was also an art meltdown, it was a lot more difficult I had to keep three side jobs, along with my regular job, for several years. But it comes and goes. Last year was a great year for me.” No doubt 2015 also will be a positive year. Anschultz currently is preparing his paintings and sculptures for a show at Chicago’s Regards Gallery, June 20th-August 1st. Show details can be found at regardsgallery.com See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

From the outside, the Cheshire looks like an inn transported from an English village to a busy stretch of Clayton Road. Open the door to The Restaurant, though, and you’ll find far mo e than typical English fare. The décor and the food both draw from old and new. In the dining room, stained-glass windows and a wood-burning fireplace are original to the building, which dates to the 1930s. Updated touches include a floo -to-ceiling, climate-controlled glass wine wall and pleated, red light shades that were installed during a renovation two years ago. “What the menu has become is an amalgam of traditional American foods, new American foods and traditional English foods,” says Rex Hale, corporate executive chef for LHM International, which

bought the Cheshire in 2010. You might find spit-roasted chicken, pork belly with white cheddar grits and fish and chips on the menu. Grilled prime rib with Yorkshire pudding is a longtime favorite, but today the beef is locally raised, from Rain Crow Ranch near Doniphan, MO. “We do farm-to-table, seasonal food,” says Hale, who serves as executive chef of the Cheshire complex, overseeing The Restaurant along with Basso, a subterranean, Italian-accented gastro pub, and Fox and Hounds tavern. Serving local foods is easier in some seasons than others, of course, but even in the dead of winter he sources tomatoes that are grown in a local greenhouse and greens from EarthDance Farms in Ferguson.

Another constant on the menu is the Cheshire’s original steak butter, a unique blend fl vored with grated onion and horseradish. “I still have people call me to buy the steak butter,” he says. “When somebody calls you – they want to buy the steak butter when they’re in from Chicago, to buy 5 pounds – it obviously had an impact.” See www.stlouishomesmag.com for more information.

Not afraid to embrace color, Richmond Heights homeowners mix soft grays and blues with brighter, bold pops. Walking into Laurie and John LeBoeuf’s Richmond Heights home, you quickly find that color abounds in the 11/2-story charmer. Serene shades of blue and gray provide a base while bold pops of color add a fun twist in various spaces. John and Laurie purchased the property in 2012, and after a few updates, they have made the house a home for their family of three. Already familiar with the area – Laurie lived on the same street before marrying John – the couple loved the look and feel of the neighborhood. So when they were looking for a home, it was no question Richmond Heights would be a great place to put down roots. “Looking at the home for the first time, we just loved it,” Laurie says. Previous owners had made many renovations to update the property, but there was still an opportunity for John and Laurie to add their own touch. STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM APRIL 2015

One major change the couple was adamant on making was opening up the main floor to include a casual family room. By eliminating one of two bedrooms on the main level and removing a wall between the bedroom and kitchen, the couple now has an open kitchen-living area perfect for entertaining or quiet nights at home with their new baby girl. “Once we got the go-ahead on taking the wall down, we knew this was our house,” Laurie explains. In fact, the day they closed on the property, the wall came down! Laurie drew up the elevation for the new space, and their families helped with the dirty work. Since the wall was load bearing, it wasn’t just a simple tear down, but the end result was an opened-up space with interesting details. Columns were added on each side to match the style of the home, while the curved entry and cutouts add interest. Calling their style transitional with a blend of traditional and contemporary furniture, finishes, fabrics and lighting, Laurie and John have incorporated a variety of accent pieces and accessories that fuse the old with the new. A local interior designer in the hospitality industry for the past eight years, Laurie loves combining pieces that have sentimental value from the couple’s travels with great finds from local antique shops. “I don’t like to buy anything as a set,” Laurie explains. “We like to find pieces that work well together and complement one another for a less-matchy feel.” An oversized custom floral by Twigs & Moss is displayed in an intricate

vase as you enter the home. The goal of the entry was to create a dramatic yet cozy and intimate feel. The floral brings a bright pop of color to the entry, which transitions to a neutral warm and cool palette in the more formal living room. Muted blue tones and warm gold hues juxtapose in the living room to establish the cozy feel the homeowners desired. The space showcases many of the great accent pieces the homeowners have collected over the years, including a blue and green bowl on the coffee table they purchased on their honeymoon in Hawaii. Adjacent to the living room, the dining room connects the front of the home to the combined kitchen/family room and guest bedroom. Because the space is small, the couple went for a more dramatic and distinct feel to distinguish it as a dining room and not just a pass-through to the back of the home. A prime example of blending old and new, a bold metallic Schumacher wallcovering in an organic print brings a contemporary feel, while the Stanley Furniture dining table, which belonged to Laurie’s parents, is a nod to the past. New, upholstered dining chairs were added to update the dining table and give it a more modern feel. Just beyond the dining room is a firs -floor guest bedroom where Laurie and John brought in a splash of color. Bold and bright, yet calming and inspirational, the purple tones complement the blues and grays found in the main level. The headboard wall is painted a deep plum, while the remaining walls are coated in a lighter lavender hue. Because

The melon, chevron wallcovering and Schumacher butterfly draperies set the tone for the bright and playful nursery. John and Laurie pulled items from a variety of resources for an overall look that complements the color scheme.

the space is small and closed off from the main living area, the homeowners were comfortable going with a bolder color choice in the bedroom. A piece of coral and a sea fan the couple bought on their honeymoon in Hawaii sit on the white-mirrored storage pieces that serve as nightstands. On the wall hang three vintage Barbie prints, which hold sentimental value to Laurie who has collected Barbies and Barbie ornaments since she was a child. The second floor was another area of the home that required updating. Previously unused attic space, the HVAC units needed updating and two rooms were converted to the master bedroom and nursery. In the master bedroom, the roof was opened up to allow the bedroom to be the full width of the house. Laurie and her father-in-law drew up plans and then worked with Brewer Contracting to achieve the final design, which includes a walk-in closet and built-in storage niche by California Closets. Soft grays with light and dark blue accents create a more neutral color palette in the sophisticated master bedroom. A painting the couple purchased from Cape Cod artist Tom Stringe in Brewster, MA, inspired the palette. After visiting Cape Cod three years in a row, they fell in love with the small-town charm and beautiful landscape and used the soft tones to inspire their bedroom. A ROMO chevron fabric on the bolster pillow as well as the ROMO wallcovering behind the headboard further bring the palette alive.

Just down the hall from the master is the nursery. An existing melon-colored, chevron wallcovering that was installed prior to becoming pregnant sparked the nursery design. Unsure if the color scheme was the direction they wanted to go for a nursery, Laurie came across the Schumacher butterfly fabric and thought it would be perfect for draperies. The wallcovering paired with the fabric inspired the creation of a fun, bright and playful nursery that their little one can grow into over time. White wood paneling was added to break up the bright wall color. Pulling items from a variety of resources, the space came together into a room fit for a princess. “I didn’t want a theme,” Laurie explains. “Instead I chose to stick within the color scheme and find unique pieces that complement the overall look.” Abstract artwork by Britt Bass complements the color scheme and will not become obsolete as their daughter grows. By not limiting themselves to choosing fabrics or items from just once place, the homeowners truly have created a unique place to play or cozy up in the rocker and read stories. By embracing color and mixing old and new furnishings accented with sentimental pieces, Laurie and John LeBoeuf have successfully crafted their Richmond Heights home into a space that is not only comfortable and cozy, but also refle tive of their family and personality. outside the lines BY BARB WILSON PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANNE MATHEIS

Color abounds in this West County home, reflecting the distinctive personalities of its owners.

Serene and stately from the curb, this lovely residence in Town & Country conceals the beehive of energy and creativity continually taking place inside. Owners Karen and Jim Castellano have a multitude of personal interests, and the 8,000-square-foot 1 1/2-story custom home built, by Bruning Homes, was tailored to their vibrant, active lifestyle. On this particular day, Jim is at the offi , where he is an accountant with a prominent national accounting/consulting fi m. Karen is busily packing for a trip to Florida, while simultaneously helping to fabricate 200 huge paper fl wers for an event being hosted by one of the couple’s two grown daughters. Unruffled by SLHL’s intrusion on her hectic schedule, Karen explained that she already had specific plans for the home’s interior décor when the architectural plans were still on the drawing boards nine years ago. The predominant color scheme throughout the main level would be red, green and gold, incorporating a number of the couple’s previously owned furnishings. The kitchen would be black and white, with distressed white cabinetry, and new acquisitions would be skillfully upholstered in hand-selected fabrics. Karen’s focus on color and craftsmanship is hardly surprising, since she holds a degree in fashion merchandising from Fontbonne University, where she also taught apparel construction. Her early career included positions with several well-known fabric stores and, later, her own business, cleverly named “Seams to Me.” Yet another asset, the owner’s sister, Kathleen Clark, is an interior designer and was happy to help Karen realize her vision. “Kathleen knows what I like,” Karen emphasizes – an important factor, since the Castellanos were less concerned with the latest fashion trends and more interested in creating a sophisticated-yet-relaxed living environment that would refle t their personal taste.

Awash with color and natural light, the two-story living room is comfortably furnished with a soft fern-green sofas; two French-style side chairs in a pale-gold damask; an eye-catching leopard-print ottoman and tray coffee table.

Bottom: A grandfather clock sits in the open entry foyer leading to the master bedroom. Opposite page: The husband's study is paneled in rich wood with two club chairs in a gold/beige herringbone weave.

Characterized by elaborate woodwork, high ceilings and expansive windows, the home’s main level fl ws smoothly from one space to another and is well suited to entertaining. The red/green/gold theme first was established in the hearth room and, although Karen had no particular style in mind when starting the process, she describes the ultimate décor as “eclectic and kind of Country French.” Awash with color and natural light, the two-story living room is comfortably furnished with a pair of soft fern-green sofas, preowned but relatively new when brought to this house; two French-style side chairs in a pale-gold damask; an eye-catching leopard-print ottoman and tray coffee table, both from KDR, and two additional side chairs, upholstered by Struckhoff in a red/green/gold stripe that reinforces the palette. The hand-woven and embroidered living room rug was a special find and exactly what Karen was looking for, with its French-influenced medallion desi n and complementary hues. Displayed in this room and throughout the home is a varied collection of original paintings. “Jim is an art lover and travels a lot on business,” Karen notes. “We enjoy visiting art fairs, and he’s brought back pieces from around the world, places like Bangkok and South America.” Fully visible from the hearth room and casual dining area is a fabulous covered veranda, where the color scheme was modified somewhat, transitioning to gold, turquoise and deep coral for a more “tropical” effect. Two benches, covered in an embroidered indoor/outdoor fabric, and a vivid all-weather rug establish the tricolor theme. Comfy wicker chairs, cushioned in turquoise, are grouped around a steel-mesh coffee table, and three separate dining arrangements provide seating for two, four or six. Bright-yellow planters, turquoise garden stools and throw pillows made by Karen lend colorful accents. Completing the main level are the formal dining room, luxurious master retreat and Jim’s richly paneled, fireside study, with its two-sided oval desk from Horchow, burgundy executive chair and club chairs in a gold/beige herringbone weave. According to Karen, “Jim considers area rugs art, so the hand-knotted wool rug was the basis for his study’s décor.” In the dining room, stark-black walls contrast dramatically with the all-white woodwork and picture-frame chair rail. “This was an ‘experiment’ that Kathleen talked me into,” says Karen, “and I really like it, since it makes a nice transition from the black-and-white kitchen.” Set on a richly hued floral rug are a Thomasville inlaid-mahogany dining table and mahogany chairs upholstered by Karen – the host/ hostess chairs in an elegant paisley, the side chairs in a complementary ribbed plaid. A majestic curved staircase leads from the foyer to the upstairs privacy level and continues its graceful curve to the lower level, which might best be described as “family central.” The vast entertainment area is lined with Jim’s huge collection of sports memorabilia. Karen’s base of operations, her spacious, sunny sewing room, adjoins a

phenomenal playroom, designed and decorated to specification for the Castellanos’ six grandchildren, with a miniature café, schoolroom, museum, theater and offstage dressing room. On the upper level, Karen’s flair for color – and her sense of humor – are evident in the guest suites, which most frequently are occupied by the grandkids who range in age from 10 to 9 months. With an impish smile, she identifies each bedroom and its adjacent bath by the décor. For example, the whimsical “dog room” illustrates the family’s love for animals, particularly their favorite pet Yorkshire Terriers. Amusing dog “portraits” top the wicker headboard, and a Ballard Design étagère showcases additional canine objets d’art. Maintaining a sense of decorum, however, the bedding is a traditional Ralph Lauren design in a deep-red cotton flora . The “black-and-white room” features a trundle daybed in creamy white; an armchair and ottoman, copied from MacKenzie-Childs, in a bold black-and-white stripe by Struckhoff Upholstery; and for a touch of color, a Picasso print. Reserved for the youngest offspring, the “pink-green-and-yellow room” is bathed in fresh pastels and furnished with crisp white wicker. Moving from room to room, Karen runs her finge tips affectionately over the multitextured fabrics, heirloom treasures made by family members and various items she personally has created, upholstered, painted or embroidered. In every space, it is clear that she has achieved her original goal. The Castellano residence is aesthetically pleasing, wonderfully functional and as creative and colorful as its owners. See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

Inspired by the Bernoudy style of their contemporary home, Creve Coeur residents use native plantings to create one of the best landscapes in the city.

Sharon Buchanan gardens on two acres that she and her husband Larry are transforming from an out-of-control wilderness into a native Missouri showplace. Her efforts already are getting attention. Last December, Creve Coeur recognized the Buchanan garden as the best in the city. That type of recognition should be no surprise when you learn a bit more about Sharon, who cannot remember a time when she did not love being outdoors. The love of the natural world led her to pursue a career in forestry at the University of Georgia, where her family lived at that time. “I could just see myself in a national park riding around in a Jeep and listening to John Denver sing ‘Rocky Mountain High,’” she quips. But halfway through college, a reality check caused her to switch majors. “There weren’t any jobs available in forestry, even if you were willing

60

to work for nothing,” she says. “I began looking around and saw that a lot of my credits would transfer into agriculture. After I finished my bachelors, I stayed at Georgia and got my masters.” Her strategic career switch paid off. After graduation Sharon accepted a position as a sales representative for Monsanto and moved to South Carolina, where she worked with farmers who grew everything from cotton and tobacco to watermelons and Christmas trees. She moved to the home offic in St. Louis in 1985, and one of her first projects was introducing the weed killer Roundup to the nonagricultural market. Then it was off to Atlanta as the Southeast sales manager and back to St. Louis in 1991. In 1992, she married Larry Buchanan, who also worked for Monsanto. When her now college-aged children arrived, Sharon left her fulltime employment with Monsanto but continued her association with the

company in customer engagement, helping customers and the general public better understand what Monsanto does. What almost could be called a second career began in 2009, when the Buchanan family, looking for a bit more space, discovered a contemporary house for sale very near the Creve Coeur location where they already lived. It was in the same grade-school district as their current home and came with two acres of property that included a creek. In addition, both the front porch and sunroom of the home, built in the 1950s, had been designed by famed St. Louis architect William Bernoudy, who had studied and worked with Frank Lloyd Wright. Wright, famous for the Prairie School of architecture, created homes and commercial buildings with strong horizontal lines that blended into the environment. He attempted to bring the outdoors inside through the use of multiple windows and natural building

materials. Bernoudy employed the same design principles, a huge plus for Sharon. But there was a defini e downside. The house and adjoining land were almost totally obscured by dead trees, bush honeysuckle and euonymus. The Buchanan family was undaunted. They bought the house and for two years Sharon and Larry saved the mature trees they could, cleared out what was dead and cut down honeysuckle, spraying the fresh-cut stumps with‌you guessed it‌Roundup to prevent regrowth. The woody euonymus had to be pulled by hand. Meanwhile, Sharon made plans for the time when the two acres could be replanted. She updated her knowledge, with an eye toward residential landscaping, by taking the Master Gardener class offered by the University of Missouri Extension Service through the Missouri Botanical Garden. She also became a Master Naturalist by taking classes STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM

offered by the Extension Service at various locations surrounding St. Louis. While the Buchanans did what they could themselves, they turned to Frisella Nursery and Tony Frisella Jr. for the truly heavy lifting. Two things were of prime importance to Sharon, Tony relates. She wanted everything to look as natural as possible, and she wanted all the plantings to be in harmony with the Bernoudy architecture. Up close to the house, that meant addressing a swimming pool that, as Tony explains, “looked like it was sitting in a hole” and three separate patio areas. To bring the pool into the landscape, Tony suggested removing the existing solid-wood fence and replacing it with more open wrought-iron fencing that eventually could blend into the planting. In addition, they removed 10 feet of driveway to surround the pool with green space on all sides.

62

Old, broken, moss-covered flagstones were repurposed and incorporated into a charming, scented, secret garden outside the Buchanans’ daughter’s room. The real breakthrough came with the creation of a gently curved, stair-step walkway that unites all three patios. “Before you had to go through the house to get from one patio to another,” Tony explains. The stone selected for new construction refle ted the earthy colors of the stone used in the construction of the original house. The crown jewel of the project is the parilla, a huge, outdoor meat-roasting oven modeled on the ovens used in Argentina, where Larry Buchanan often travels on business. The overall transformation of the property also involved terracing the long, steep driveway leading up to the house and preventing further erosion by creating natural run-off areas into a creek at the bottom of

APRIL 2015 STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM

OUTDOOR_0415.indd 62

3/11/15 9:51 AM

the two hilly acres. With the hardscape completed, the Buchanans began the planting phase of their exterior decoration. Larry took over the task of digging a stream bed that edges the patios, bringing the splashing of recirculated water to the outdoor areas and transmitting the relaxing sound through large windows into the sunroom and master bedroom. Sharon began to select the plants to create a native paradise. Dogwoods, azaleas, native hydrangeas, beautyberry and winterberry line the long driveway up to the house. Oak, hickory, persimmon, apple, peach and pear trees went into appropriate sites. “I went through a phase where if it didn’t produce food, I wouldn’t plant it,” Sharon recalls. She is continuing to add small trees and shrubs such as serviceberries, witch hazels, red horse chestnuts, fothergillas, elderberries and sumacs to the landscape. In keeping with the Prairie School architecture of the porch and

sunroom, native prairie plants such as conefl wers, amsonia, Joe-Pye weed, yarrow and milkweed populate the sunny areas near the house. Fragrant viburnums and summersweet surround the Bernoudy front porch. In addition to the ornamental areas, Sharon tends a vegetable garden with crops that rotate as the growing season progresses. That area also contains blackberry and raspberry bushes, as well as fruit-bearing trees. What keeps her going is the “joy of being outdoors and seeing the results of what we have done.” She has some words of advice for fellow gardeners: “Try to grow something you can eat. Use native plants whenever you can and make sure what you plant provides food for someone. Look at gardening as a joy. Otherwise it is way too much work.” See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources. Embracing technology, even in your garden, can simplify your life. Check out these great garden gadgets local landscapers love. BY MELISSA MAUZY

“A web-based irrigation controller is great to have in the garden. We like the Irrigation Caddy. It has an app for irrigation instead of going to the control box all the time. You can use any web browser or the app to fully control your irrigation system no matter where you are.” Bob Graeler, Chesterfield Valley Nursery.

“Our customers enjoy using the LusterLeaf Digital Plus moisture meter to help them take the guesswork out of watering their plants. Correct soil moisture is extremely important to successful plant care, and Digital Plus can read your soil moisture in seconds! The Digital Plus has both a basic mode to quickly read the soil moisture and also a favorites mode that allows you to build a list of plants you check frequently. You can choose from a list of over 150 indoor and outdoor plants with plant moistures preferences already built in.” Christine Knoernschild, Passiglia’s Nursery & Garden Center.

“The Rapitest Digital Soil Test and the Electronic Soil tester check pH, nitrogen, phosphorus and potash levels. The Rapitest light and moisture meter lets you know when to water and how much light your plants are receiving.” David Sherwood, Sherwood’s Forest.

“Our potting soil, Black Gold, has "Resilience" included in its ingredients. A patented-technology and organic, Resilience will help the gardener grow a stronger, lusher plant with more blooms. Here’s how it works…Once taken up by the plant, Resilience accumulates in the cell walls and strengthens the plant tissue. This creates stronger tissues that prevent and reduce disease and insect damage. Stronger stems often result in compact and sturdier plants. Resilience also polymerizes and turns into a gel, reducing water loss.” Ann Lapides, Sugar Creek Gardens.

Knowledge EDITED BY MELISSA MAUZY PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF MISSOURI BOTANICAL GARDEN

To spend time with Melanie Fathman, longtime Garden member and volunteer, is a delightful experience to say the least. Her vast knowledge and long history is admirable and has inspired many throughout the years to become a part of the Garden family – that is, its members. Melanie began volunteering at the Garden hosting children’s birthday parties in 1969. She served on the Friends Board and was a founding member of the Boxwood Society. Her work in the Herb Society resulted in thousands of propagated herbs for annual herb sales throughout the years and brought about a book she coauthored with Barbara Reber Ottolini, “It’s All in the Name - A Guide to the Botanical Names of Some Herbs and Useful Plants,” a reference that is widely used by both new and experienced gardeners. When asked what first comes to mind of all her experiences at the Garden she was quick to reply, “People here are so giving of their knowledge; they genuinely want to share what they themselves have learned. It’s not like that everywhere. I assume the beauty of this place puts people in a generous mood." Melanie is particularly fond of the Shoenberg Temperate House. "The Temperate House looks alive with scents and color all seasons of the year! I love Mediterranean Gardens very much because of all the associations we all have about the culture, climate and memories from that part of the world!” See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

WHEN THE WORLD comes to your doorstep BY LORRAINE RAGUSEO PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF QUINTESSENTIAL WINES

ADRIANA ASTORGA’S WORKING LIFE FOR THE PAST 20 YEARS HAS EXCEEDED HER CHILDHOOD DREAMS.

BORN AND RAISED IN SAN RAFAEL, a small city in the southern part of the Mendoza region of Argentina, Adriana Astorga always hoped that she would travel the world, meeting people from cultures far removed from her own. Adriana prepared for this life by studying international business and marketing, graduating from the local university with a degree in foreign trade. During her senior year, she worked as an assistant to a customs broker in the area. Right after Adriana graduated, a position opened up at one of the most interesting companies in San Rafael, especially for someone with her ambitions – Bodega Valentin Bianchi. In 1928, Italian immigrant Valentin Bianchi started a small winery among the vineyards that he and his wife Elsa, cultivated. Today, the winery stands as one of the oldest still family-owned and operated wineries in Argentina. Its many fine wines, from a highly rated super-premium red Bordeaux blend called Enzo (named after Valentin’s son, who was Bianchi’s winemaker for 50 years) to the value-priced, perennial best-buy Elsa line of Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Torrontes and other popular varietals, are among the best-known Argentine labels in its own country and around the world. Valentin Bianchi also makes the number one Argentine white wine sold in the United States – New Age. It was into this venerable and exciting environment that Adriana found herself assisting a Bianchi family member with his duties as export

70

manager at the time. Very quickly she was dealing with the technical issues of sending wine to Latin and South America, North America and Europe (now expanded to China and Africa). She was instrumental in moving wine around the globe and became entrenched as a crucial member of Bianchi’s logistics team. Because of her fluen y in English, as well as a smattering of other languages, not to mention her native Spanish, Adriana was drafted into the sales and promotional side of the wine business, traveling most of Latin America and even Canada, representing the winery and helping abroad with sales and marketing support. After a few years, as Valentin Bianchi (and her own family with husband Javier) grew, business travel lost a little bit of its luster. Given her expertise in so many areas of the company, she was allowed to curtail that portion of her working life to oversee a staff handling export logistics from the San Rafael headquarters. Still, Adriana was able to continue interacting, face to face, with people of many nationalities as the coordinator for all winery visits by importers, distributors, sommeliers, restaurant and retail owners and wine buyers. You can see her in numerous photos taken by those she successfully has escorted through the winery and vineyards, as well as on various tours of the region, often including a visit to the nearby Valle Grande outdoor recreational area. It is here, in a mini version of our Grand Canyon, that Adriana has

donned bathing suit and water helmet and taken up oars alongside many a wary winery guest to brave the rapids of the Atuel River, or hiked up and down the foothills of the Andes Mountains, or slid and shimmied along ropes on a challenging zip-line/obstacle course. She has been the go-to person with the answers to all travel problems or questions for the international wine business coterie who visit Valentin Bianchi, which is one of Argentina’s top tourist attractions. With all the above, she still makes time to raise her two daughters, who are now nearly teenagers, stay active with tennis and continue to travel “anywhere and everywhere,” but now mostly with her family. On the rare occasions that she has time to make more than a simple meal, she will prepare a traditional dish from the San Rafael region called Carne a la Masa (beef on bread dough), which requires marinating

overnight strips of Argentine beef and cut carrots, peppers and onions, along with garlic, rosemary and chili powder, in red wine. The next day, the mixture is poured over raw bread dough that lines an oven-proof dish. It is baked for two hours at around 350 degrees, until the dough is golden and the filling bubbling. Of course, it is served with Argentina’s signature red grape, Malbec (such as Valentin Bianchi’s Famiglia Bianchi Malbec that was named best red wine in a prestigious French wine competition last year). Adriana has created a balanced life of work and family and also been able to satisfy her passion for travel and contact with the world beyond San Rafael...her childhood dreams truly have come true! Orange You Blue? BY BARBARA E. STEFÀNO PHOTOGRAPHY BY MATTHEW HARRER PHOTOGRAPHY

Pale, dreamy blue with dramatic pops of orange warm up a jewel-box Rock Hill bungalow.

Moving

from a 3,500-square-foot home in St. Louis Hills to an 888-square-foot Rock Hill bungalow was a lifestyle shock for Corina Taylor. The mother of a 17-year-old son and 13-year-old daughter, Taylor settled into the cozy, jewel-box home a year and a half or so ago and quickly realized the tiny space would need big changes to become more functional – and more inviting. “I didn’t feel I had enough space [before],” Taylor says. “Now, the bungalow, it’s very small. It’s just a rectangle house and very narrow. … It

76

had a more modern, stark feel to it. I wanted something more comfortable and cozy.” When a blue-and-orange room caught her eye on Pinterest, Taylor took the image to local designer Suzanne Tullock to inspire a total redesign of the open living room/kitchen area. “I was really excited that she wanted to do that because you get to do something different, and she was willing to take a little risk with the color scheme,” Tullock says. The trick to pulling it off was layering the colors onto a neutral palate,

and Taylor’s medium-wood floors and pale-taupe walls served as the ideal backdrop. The family’s off white sofa stayed, but Tullock replaced a second couch with an orange chair and matching footrest, freeing up floor space in the tight room. She tucked the TV inside a mirrored, dark-wood entertainment center, and in lieu of a space-eating coffee table, placed a small, six-sided table in deep azure near the sofa, providing just enough surface area for writing or resting beverages. The most dramatic focal points lie at opposite ends of the open

space – one in the living room and one in the kitchen. Bright-orange, high-end Robert Abbey lamps pop atop the off white tables at either end of the sofa. Tullock pitted a custom white window treatment with a bold orange hem against rows of pale-blue ceramic plates mounted on the walls on either side. She further punctuated the room with accent pillows and accessories in various shades of orange and blue and tied it together with a rug that incorporated all the elemental colors in the scheme. I love it because it’s just so cozy!

At the opposite end, in the kitchen, sits an ornate, wooden buffet, which Tullock bought at The Green Shag Market on Manchester for just $50 and had professionally painted in a delicate, robin’s-egg blue. She scattered the top with a pair of sunny vases, bottles of orange drink and glass jars filled with snacks in various shades of the color (most playful is the glass fish-shaped dish stocked with Goldfish crackers, easily obtained with a quick swipe into the gaping mouth). The entire space is easily visible from the family dinner table, a glass-top

78

round table covered in a white-and-orange patterned cloth and surrounded by pale-blue chairs. The overall effect is what Tullock calls “a happy place” that is refined yet fun, livable and inviting; one that is neither dated nor coldly modern. “She put all these little pieces together that you wouldn’t think would work – things you would never think to do yourself,” Taylor says. “I love it because it’s just so cozy!” See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

slhl BEFORE & AFTER

Understated & Elegant BY JAMIE SIEBRASE PHOTOGRAPHY BY RYAN ARCHER

From flo al to fab, a few thoughtful, eco-conscious updates transformed this typical ‘80s living room into a cheerful space boasting understated elegance that jives perfectly with the surrounding Illinois countryside.

Sometimes all you need to make a big statement is the right color palette, plenty of sunlight and thoughtful staging. For this particular European-style property – a two-story home set alongside rural terrain and a clear, blue lake – country French hues gave way to the lighter, airier look two Belleville homeowners were after. The husband-and-wife duo had built their house in 1988 and had it professionally decorated then. “I loved it for years,” one homeowner explains, “but there was so much going on, and I’d grown tired of the previous look.” When designer Caryn Burstein Babich of Arcterior Design came on board, the homeowners showed her a picture of a bright room with soft,

80

elegant finishes and blue tones. Problem was, the original space was “dark and on the heavy side,” as Babich puts it. The designer knew she needed more light, so she played with color and contrast. Initially, the room had achromatic walls and colorful, albeit faded, furniture. “I reversed that, adding color to the walls and making the furniture more mild,” Babich says, pointing to the Benjamin Moore shaker beige paint, which softens the space as creamy, off white accents add depth without any of the sterility you might get from a starker white. “The room had great bones and great window space, but it was covered by heavy window treatments,” Babich continues. The next step

RE BEFO

was removing the curtains and sheers and tinting the windows, which offered an al-fresco ambience while protecting interior fabrics; new blue-silk drapes surround the windows without hiding them. As a finish ng touch, Babich recommended can lighting and purchased the homeowners' favorite illuminated addition: a blue lamp from Brody’s. The original floral sofas were dated, true, but the craftsmanship was top-notch. That’s why the homeowners reupholstered them, opting for a solid, off white fabric with the intention of adding flair via simple throw pillows. Another eco-smart, budget-friendly idea was revitalizing the old Ethan Allen cabinet with some fresh paint.

Salvaging furniture is all well and good, but it is also fun to splurge. With the goal of keeping things airy, Babich added a wrought-iron and glass coffee table that’s interesting but doesn’t overpower the built-in bookcases – a new addition functioning as a focal point and offering an organized, more finished loo . When the furniture was ready, Babich rearranged it into a more welcoming configuration that supports the new space’s open vibe. The homeowners were reserved throughout the design process and thoughtful about changes. “And that’s so great because I knew they’d love the end result,” says Babich. slhl SPOT LIGHT

Sound Not Sight FILL YOUR HOME WITH AMBIENT SOUND WITHOUT EVER SEEING A SPEAKER.

BY SHANNON CRAIG PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF SONANCE

As we transform into a society of techies, we are becoming more aware of the fact that we have not seen it all. From the phones we carry in our pockets, to the laptops on our desks, the cars we drive, even the way we listen to music, the digital landscape surrounding us changes constantly, ushering collective “oohs” and “aahhs” whenever something new is brought to the table for us to ogle. But for the latest and greatest in speakers, the sight to behold cannot be seen as at all. In fact, Sonance, the manufacturer of the invisible speaker, boasts that its most distinct contribution to the digital landscape is a speaker that leaves “no visible footprint” whatsoever. Kevin Burnley, president and CEO of Creative Audio Visual and Automation in St. Louis, sees their point. “These are completely invisible. That’s their primary selling point,” Burnley says, sitting at the breakfast bar in his smart home that also serves as his showroom for the Sonace Invisible Series system. From his mobile phone, tablet, a handheld remote or a postcard-sized touchscreen keypad on the wall, he controls every aspect of his AV integrated home. Too warm? Too loud? Too bright? “There’s an app for that.” Burnley has installed speakers for the last 20 years and has served in his capacity with Creative Audio Visual and Automation for the last four years, only a little longer than he has been introducing the invisible speaker to St. Louis customers. “Most people don’t know these exist,” Burnley says, explaining that the Sonance is installed along with the

84

drywall and then is covered up. “When we sell these, we make it a presentation. It’s not really well known that they are available yet. People don’t expect that option when they think of a typical in-wall speaker.” Or any speaker, for most of us. Not long ago, speakers were seen stacked around televisions and climbing toward living-room ceilings, a tangled mess of cords hanging from all angles like some slick-skinned willow. They were hot, they were temperamental and more often than not they were also an eyesore. Not anymore. Standing in Burnley’s east hallway, “I Can’t Go for That” by Hall and Oates plays as crisply and clearly as it would were they standing in front of me. But of course, I was facing a wall. “It’s not there. Or there. Or there,” Burnley answered as I continued to incorrectly guess where the system could be. Although some of the low-end frequency capabilities of the speaker may be lost due to its physical size, the tradeoff of having the freedom of decorating however you would like, minus the assortment of “neutral colored” plastic boxes all over your home, very well may be worth the investment. “We take clients downstairs and they ask where the sound is coming from,” Burnley illustrates as the moment when most people decide to purchase the Sonance invisible speaker. “We just hold our hands out to the wall.” You don’t have to see it to believe it. I can go for that. See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

PLACES TO GO, THINGS TO DO AND SEE, AND PEOPLE WHO ARE LEAVING THEIR MARK ON THE WORLD OF STYLE. BY MELISSA MAUZY

Architextures, St. Louis, MO PHOTOGRAPHY BY JEFF WELLMAN PHOTOGRAPHY

The color orange is symbolic of strength and endurance, and is represented well at the offic of Architextures, a full-scope architecture and interior design fi m in St. Louis. Architextures was recently awarded the “Award of Excellence for Architecture" by the City of Webster Groves for the renovation of their 1940s building purchased for their new office in Webster Groves. Owner Christi Johaningmeyer explains that orange is the perfect color to depict the strength and creativity of the fi m. “From the orange powder-coated steel panels and aluminum sun shades on the

façade, to the interior shades of tangerine, citrus yellow and light melon, these colors help to create an energizing and dynamic offic environment for my team and clients," Johaningmeyer says. Along with 12-foot ceilings, modular walls and unique sculptural glass artwork by local artists hanging on their walls, Architextures has a commanding feel, and no doubt will lead the industry in architecture and design for years to come.

JetBlue T5 Terminal at JFK, New York, NY PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF JETBLUE

Travelers can wait to arrive and depart in style at JetBlue’s T5 terminal at New York’s JFK airport. Completed in 2008, the terminal houses 35 shops as well as 38 food and beverage outlets. With nontraditional offerings, travelers can grab a great meal while waiting for their flight to depart. New York design fi m ICRAVE designed six of the bold restaurants featuring

fun splashes of color as a way to depart from the traditional airport restaurant designs. Deep Blue gives off the feeling of being in a water world with modern, clean aesthetics. The overall terminal design focuses on simple materials such as exposed steel, metal and glass.

IS IT A CLASSIC OR IS IT A CRAZE

CLASSIC “We are selling more dedicated home theaters this year than we ever have. A dedicated home theater uses a projection television and screen as opposed to a big tv. The screen and projector need to be in their own room so you can control light and contain sound, plus they’re fun for people to design. When you’re in a dedicated theater room, the whole idea is that you want to escape reality for two hours. You want to feel like you’ve gone out without leaving your home. In luxury homes, people are including a dedicated room because they have the extra real estate. In other homes, we are seeing more media rooms that are more multipurpose with fla -panel display, nice surround sound, streaming and gaming options.” David Young, The Sound Room. “I’m noticing a continuing trend for enclosed theater rooms. However, I see more flexible seating options as opposed to single seat theater configuration . My clients are showing a trend of reclining sectionals and more casual areas to lay down and watch movies, rather than the theater chairs that sit singularly. Many homeowners that have teenagers and use their lower levels for casual movie watching want areas that can accommodate large groups, rather than the singular benefit of a chair recliner with cup holders and LED lighting for example. Overall, I think the idea of the closed theater room is still alive and well for the next few years. As we see in rooms with new concepts, it takes a few years for us to get it right for true functional comfort.” Krista Howard, Krista Howard Interiors. “With the growing popularity of open-concept floor plans, the enclosed theater room still remains a classic. The primary purpose of a theater room has been to darken and soundproof the space, creating the ultimate movie-theater experience and also insulating the sound from the rest of the home. Today however, thanks to our always-evolving technology, there are so many options and gadgets available to increase the enjoyment and use of the space that the enclosed media room is becoming more popular than ever! Think surround sound, mood lighting, fibe -optic ceiling lights, etc., all with a touch of the iPad, plus 3D movies and virtual-reality gaming without leaving the comforts of home!” Jennifer Rapp and Emily Koch, JCR Design Group.

For our April color and technology issue, we asked local designers and tech gurus if enclosed theater rooms are a classic or a craze.

“Theater rooms, whether open concept or closed, are a craze. No matter the amount of square footage my client's have available, they are realizing that they want rooms that can be multipurpose. Instead of just having a theater room, they want to utilize the space as a family/entertaining area as well.” Amy Studebaker, Amy Studebaker Design. “At the SOHO Shop we now create more open entertainment spaces than theater rooms. On some of our larger home projects we still see the architect and homeowners calling for enclosed theather rooms, but this is just a small percentage. For the last fi e years, the trend has been to design a spacious, open entertainment space, which fl ws into an area with a large screen and seating area, generally on the home's lower level. We find that our client's use the theater system more often with this open configuration. This design also allows families to more easily supervise what their children are watching or playing.” Dennis Hickman, The SOHO Shop.
