slhl HELLO

It's not always

BLACK & WHITE Well, I did it again.

ne Matheis

Loving this graffit wall in The Grove off Manchester Road. Photography by Colin Miller/Strauss Peyton

10

I made a design decision my significant other Barney does not like. I've done it before with paint. This time, I did it with wallpaper. Before the holidays, I fell in love with a wallpaper that I know I have been looking for and dreaming of for years. You know that feeling when you know what you want, but you don't know what you want? Sounds crazy, but I know the majority of you know what I'm talking about. I had basically given up trying to figu e out a wallpaper I wanted. I had seen many patterns and color choices that were close to what I was seeking, but nothing nailed it until I laid my eyes on THE WALLPAPER. It had my name all over it. There was no doubt in my mind that this paper would take my kitchen to the next level. As each roll was applied to the wall, I swooned. Could it be more beautiful? I don't think so. Maybe wrap the entire space with it vs. papering just one wall? No, that would be just too much, besides I only ordered enough for the one wall. More than one wall would be overkill, and I don't want to put Barney over the edge! However, I do have the challenge of convincing Barney our kitchen is a knockout. Hmm...changing the paint color of the remaining wall might do it. Kitchen cabinets, doorways and millwork comprise the rest of the room, so it must be that adjacent wall that is throwing his eye. The painter is scheduled for tomorrow. Surely, there is a miracle in the making. Barney will see the light soon enough! Is black a color? Is white a color? Apparently it depends on who you ask. As long as it is a color in a crayon box, it's a color to me! But how many shades of white are there, anyway? I chose a cool white for my non-wallpapered wall in the kitchen and a contrasting white for all the doors and millwork. Did you know you can change the colors in a room by changing the light bulbs alone? I was well aware of the power of the light bulb but had never experienced the changes in my own home. So before you hire the painter and completely change the color of a room, first try changing your warm bulbs with cool ones or vice versa. Several of our local lighting stores have the color effect the different bulbs cast to a room on display. It's well worth the trip to investigate. Pantone, the universal authority on color, has deemed a yellow-green as the 2017 color of the year (page 14). Given the name, Greenery, it symbolizes new beginnings and is considered nature's neutral palette. It's no wonder then that springtime is such a visually beautiful season. Enjoy,

GREENING UP One of nature’s first clues that Spring is here, the color green evokes life into our worlds. Pantone, the color authority, deemed Greenery its 2017 color of the year. Symbolic of new beginnings, Greenery is a fresh and zesty yellow-green shade that is nature’s neutral. Bring a touch of nature into your home by incorporating pops of Greenery for a breath of fresh air.

She is all about making

furniture glamorized. SLHL: How did you get started painting furniture? Sucheta: Four years ago I bought an '80s, split-level house, and when it came down to furnishing it I was always drawn to vintage furniture shops and antique malls. A lovely cloverleaf table caught my eye for the reading nook in my living room, but while I loved the shape, the wood tone just wasn't going to work. Instead, I decided to paint it a glossy green and loved the result. After that, I painted a dresser for my bedroom, and at that point, I was addicted! It dawned on me that the only way to keep painting furniture was to sell painted furniture, and that's how it all started. SLHL: Where do you acquire the pieces you paint? Sucheta: I constantly browse Craigslist and estate sales, but lately local furniture resellers contact me and give me dibs on their pieces. Sometimes, clients will tip me off on pieces at resale shops like Miriam Switching Post or Goodwill. As for hard-to-find collectible pieces that may be located in another state, I use websites like Chairish or eBay, just to name a few. SLHL: Why high gloss? Sucheta: It is just the perfect finish for clean, modern decor. A glossy finish enhances the lovely design of vintage pieces, makes a bold statement and updates the piece, bringing it into the 21st century. We rescue so many pieces that were exiled to basement storage rooms for decades because they just didn't work with client's current decor. We update the pieces with a high-gloss finish and the exact color the client had in mind. Also, glossy finishes are not just pretty to look at; they are practical and durable. You can set a glass of cold water on a lacquered nightstand night after night and it won't leave a water ring. The finish will create a barrier that will protect the wood from bubbling up and continue to look glossy for years to come. SLHL: What colors do you think will be big for 2017? Sucheta: Green. Pantone announced Greenery as the color of 2017. I always thought green was a classic. As one of my clients once said, "Greens never clash in nature." It's all around us, all the time. My personal favorites are kelly and emerald greens. SLHL: Where do you get your inspiration? Sucheta: I follow a lot of talented people on Instagram that do amazing work. Pinterest, interior decor magazines and home decor blogs -- all are great places to browse for inspiration. Sometimes you just look at a piece of furniture and it screams the color it wants to be, other times you just end up copying someone you admire.

SLHL: Describe the transformation process. Sucheta: The process is quite challenging but very rewarding. We start by removing the original hardware. Then every inch of the piece is sanded to scuff it up so the primer can adhere to the surface. Glaring imperfections are filled with automotive filler . Then, the piece gets primed with primer that fills the wood grain. Then we sand the primer smooth. Oftentimes, this is followed with another round of filling and sanding. Like I said earlier, it's many many days of prep work. Once the prep work is over, everything has to be completely dust-free before we are ready to spray the final finish. Spraying the the lacquer is like a prize for days of hard work. Once the finish dries, which takes 24-48 hours, the hardware is attached back on. Every transformation causes a "WOW!" reaction amongst the team, even though we had been part of it all along. Absolutely never gets old. SLHL: Do you have to use special paint or brushes to achieve the look? Sucheta: We use oil enamel paint and lacquer for the glossy finishe . These materials need to be applied by experienced professionals using a compressor and a spray gun. Brush application is fine for a DIYer, but it will leave texture instead of the smooth, glossy finish our clients desi e. SLHL: How do you choose the hardware? What impact does it make? Sucheta: For a majority of the time, we reuse the original vintage hardware. We clean and polish the original hardware to match the new finish. If I decide to change the hardware, I tend to pick pulls that will complement and not compete with the design and finish. To me, hardware is to a dresser as jewelry is to a dress. A dresser with simple clean lines can handle bold floral medallion pulls. An ornate dresser needs simpler, cleaner pulls, just like a little black dress shows off the chunky necklace as the superstar of the outfit, but an elaborate frilly dress demands simple, understated jewelry. SLHL: Will painted furniture go with any design style? Sucheta: Yes, but to me it's not about “matchy matchy.” It's about putting things together and having fun while doing it. The whole idea is that you buy things you truly love and make them work. You can mix different colors, textures, fabrics and styles to give it that "curated, collected, eclectic" look that is current and here to stay. SLHL: Is a room limited to one high-gloss piece of furniture or could you have several? Sucheta: I think depending on the size and scale of the room you can easily do two to three pieces of high-gloss furniture in a room. A dresser and two matching nightstands? Totally. A china cabinet and a buffet both in high gloss in a large dining room? Why not! If gloss is not the preferred look, we also do satin and matte finishes as ell.

SLHL: What is most challenging in the painting process? Sucheta: Prep work is the most challenging and time-consuming part of the process. Glossy finishes are extremely unforgiving of surface imperfections. We spend many days, sometimes even weeks, sanding, fillin , priming, re-sanding and re-priming. Vintage furniture is sturdy, but sometimes it is riddled with dents and dings that just happen due to 50-60 years of usage. While it is impossible to get it to look like a brand new piece of furniture that came out of a factory, we do our best to get that glassy smooth surface. Photo courtesy of Sucheta.

COLOR BROUGHT TO LIFE LISA OBER CREATES PIECES TO TREASURE WITH OILS AND PASTELS.

“I color for a living,” says Lisa Ober, with a twinkle and a smile. Given her vast portfolio of portraits and still life compositions, it’s a charming understatement. “There’s a joy we all felt as children when we colored, and I can’t believe I get to feel it every day,” Ober effuse . Ober has painted her entire life, beginning as a child in her grandmother’s art studio. Portrait painting earned her extra money when she was in college at Washington University in St. Louis. And, aside from a misspent year working for a home improvement company, Ober has continued to support herself as a painter and painting workshop instructor. Ober enjoys international exposure, but is best known in St. Louis for her commissioned portraits. Her subjects vary from children to executives to cherished pets. “Everyone should have good original art, and that art should be of something that you love,” Ober explains. She paints in both oil and pastel, creating works of fine a t that are as realistic as photographs. When a work is commissioned, Ober snaps photos of her subject and shares the most flat ering ones with her client for their approval. Then she paints at night, often until fi e in the morning. It’s a habit she began years ago, when she worked while her two young children slept. A portrait takes several months to complete. “I save the eyes for last. When the eyes

show the person’s inner light, I know I’m finished with the portrait,” she says. Staring at someone’s features for weeks at a time is an intimate process. “I get attached. I feel like I know people after I’ve painted them,” Ober says. Ober teaches painting in workshops all over the United States, covering techniques in her preferred mediums. She is careful to also include instruction on the business end of being creative, including the importance of a having a navigable portfolio website, and everything from understanding tax implications to the importance of keeping good records. “I do it because I wish young people knew a little more about the work of being a working artist. They come out of school and have not a clue of how to run a small business,” she explains. Ober is accredited by two professional organizations. She is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America, and is a master circle member of the International Association of Pastel Societies. Prices and samples of Ober’s work are available on her website, lisaober.com. Her art is on display at the OA Gallery in Kirkwood, which Ober co-owns with three partners. Comfort

INNS The Inns at St. Albans Chef D. Scott Phillips serves up hearty American comfort foods in a rustic European setting on the Missouri River. The Inns at St. Albans is that rare little getaway city-dwellers can discover practically in their own backyards, the type that offers respite in a setting that might as well be half a world away. It’s a scenic spot for a bunk and a bite, so to speak, though it’s the eats that are keeping Chef D. Scott Phillips on the map. The bed-and-breakfast inns and events facilities lie in the village of St. Albans, MO, just a few minutes drive from Chesterfield on the Missouri River. The peaceful grounds are home to the Old Barn and the Studio Inn, built in 1843 and 1900, structures have served as a stopping point for travelers, as well as a couple of restaurants through the decades, most recently the Gardens at Malmaison. Today, the newly renovated buildings host private parties, catered events and overnight guests, eager to absorb the European-inspired elegance of a half-dozen well-appointed rooms. Manning the kitchen is D. Scott Phillips, a versatile chef who made his name at establishments such as Provisions Gourmet Market and Balaban’s. While catering for hungry crowds of various sizes and transporting food to outside venues present challenges, Chef Phillips offers a striking level of variety to his on- and off-si e diners. His custom menus accommodate a range of tastes, whether the customer’s keen on a brunch of egg stratas and pain perdu, or hankering for the kick of Cajun fare. “I tell people there’s nothing I can’t do, but I like to keep it simple,” he says. “Simple” means satisfying comfort foods like pot roast, meatloaf and Phillips’ fried chicken, which the chef proudly touts as the best around.

“I keep it at fi e ingredients. I think the Colonel (Sanders, of KFC fame) needs 13,” he says, chuckling. “I cook it at a lower temperatures—no high-pressure cookers—and I use a couple of unusual ingredients, I’ll put it that way.” While Phillips won’t completely divulge his own secret recipe, he did reveal the use of lemon juice. “We consciously try to hit all the fl vors, your entire tongue. People can’t quite put their finger on what’s different, but it’s a more rounded taste.” The popularity of the fried chicken inspired Phillips to introduce accompaniments that are familiar, yet deviate from the expected: French toast. “I thought it would be fun, since we see a lot of chicken and waffl ,” he says. “Everyone’s doing chicken and waffles.” Both sweet and savory French toast creations populate his guests’ menus, partnered with everything from roasted apples to braised ribs. One doesn’t need to cater an event to tuck into a hearty meal at the Inns at St. Albans; Phillips serves his Sunday Supper buffet of comfort food each week from 4-8 p.m. (think fried chicken, pot roast or meat loaf, for example, with sides like macaroni and cheese, green bean and whipped potatoes), all for a respectable $20 per person. Caramelized Leek Stuffed French Toast: For this savory French toast, Phillips drenches French bread in egg, cream and chives and stuffs it with creamy mascarpone, caramelized leek and onion. It’s served alongside a beef short rib that’s braised in a reduction of Missouri’s signature Norton wine. Wine pairing: Cachette Cotes du Rhone.

Buttermilk Pan-Fried Catfish Paired with a Chive French Toast: The same savory French toast describe above is piled with cornmeal-coated catfish. Phillips tops it with briny capers and olives, and flavors it all with chili, garlic, scallions and hot sauce. He completes the dish with a drizzle of spicy aioli. Wine pairing: Georges Duboeuf Macon-Villages Chardonnay. Cajun French Toast with Caramelized Fuji Apples and Caramel Sauce: Though this recipe starts traditional, it goes a step beyond with the addition of cayenne pepper and bourbon to the egg dip. Phillips tops the confection with caramelized Fuji apples and fresh-made caramel sauce. Wine pairing: Gustave Lorentz Brut Rosé.

FRENCH WINES

& FRENCH TOAST

Who knew the two could be such

T

he unique French toast offerings that are the hallmark of breakfasts at the historic Inns at St. Albans pose a very interesting challenge to wine-lovers. Most of the time, the simple egg-dipped bread fried in butter is the bastion of breakfast or brunch, meals where the drink of choice is more often a cocktail like a bloody mary or mimosa, or maybe a café au lait. Certainly the traditional French toast, or pain perdu as it is known in France and England, does not call to mind many wine partnerships. But, when it’s stuffed with caramelized leeks and topped with beef short ribs in a red-wine reduction, it breaks the barrier and enters the realm of wine-pairing nirvana. Going all French for these dishes, the aforementioned first recipe would work with a plethora of light- to medium-bodied red wines from grapes such as Pinot Noir. However, in honor of this unusual food-wine pairing, we are traveling to France’s Cotes du Rhone, where the predominant grape is Grenache, with Syrah also growing there. It is situated in the country’s southeast, with the southernmost part right next to Provence. There are quite a few Cotes du Rhone wines available in the United

34

States, but the best match would be the value-priced Cachette Cotes du Rhone. It is a blend of Grenache and Syrah, with some Cinsault and Carignan adding a spicy fruitiness that plays off the richness of the short ribs and the mild onion-like fl vor of the leeks. When French toast laced with chives is served with buttermilk-battered, pan-fried catfish, we’re pouring a white wine with body in our glass. The Maconnais region of Burgundy, lying just between Northern (the Cote d’Or) and Southern Burgundy (also known as Beaujolais) is a hotbed of Chardonnay vines. Almost all of the grapes grown here are Chardonnay. French Chardonnay wines are usually produced without oak, so the wines have a fresh bouquet and fl vor and show this white grape in its purest state. One of the most famous names in the region is Georges Duboeuf, who was born in the Maconnais, though he became a worldwide celebrity with his Beaujolais Nouveau. Les Vins Georges Duboeuf make some of the region’s finest wines…the Macon-Villages in his signature fl wer label, with its acacia fl wer, citrus and lemon peel fl vors, are a natural with fried fish and will pick up the chives in the French toast in such a way that the hint of anise on the finish becomes a bit more

pronounced – and that much more delicious. Like Belgian waffles, French toast can be a terrific base for sweet dessert toppings. Cajun French toast is a particularly spicy bottom layer for caramelized fuji apples and a drizzle of caramel sauce. Spicy…sweet…bubbly time! But, instead of reaching for the expected Champagne, we’re going to another eastern wine region of France, for an elegant and refreshing sparkling wine called Cremant, from the Alsace region. Alsace is one of the eastern borders with Germany, on the west bank of the Rhone River, so it should not be a surprise that its most famous grapes are all white – Riesling, Gewurztraminer and Pinot Gris – much the same grapes that reign in Mosel and other German wine regions. Alsace wines are known to be among the most food-friendly white wines. There’s only one red grape that has made headway in the Alsace – and that is Pinot Noir. A delicate grape, Pinot Noir flou ishes in cooler climates, which is where you find many of the best white grape vineyards. The Rosé version of Cremant from a centuries-old winery like Gustave Lorentz (still owned by the Lorentz family) is 100 percent Pinot Noir and produced in the Methode Champenoise, which is the traditional way Champagne is made. Between it bubbles and its fruit, Cremant Brut Rose turns down the heat of the Cajun spices, while waltzing with the caramel sweetness that suffuses the topping. French wines for French toast… surprising pairings that work with some surprising fare. See www.stlouishomesmag.com for more information.

An added "bonus" space, the designer and homeowner treated the outdoor patio as an extension of the interior living space by incorporating the same airy color scheme.

By Melissa Mauzy Photography by Anne Matheis

When East coast native Dorian Tomace had the opportunity to transfer to St. Louis for a job opportunity, she thought why not! A change in pace from the hustle and bustle of city living to the more relaxed lifestyle of the Midwest was appealing. After a home-finding visit where she had zeroed in on Chesterfiel , Clayton and the Central West End, Dorian fell in love with the urban vibe of the Cortex area on the eastern edge of the CWE. An up-and-coming hub of innovation, the Cortex area has already seen tremendous growth and development, luring many top-name companies to conduct business in the area. In the coming months and years another phase of development is planned to include hotels, retail, apartments

as well as a greenway corridor connecting to The Grove and City Foundry, an open-air public market. In addition to being drawn to the revitalization of the area, Dorian immediately fell in love with the West End Loft building. Built in 1914, the building was the first Ford Motor Co. auto plant in the St. Louis area and production continued there until the 1940s. Now a desirable loft building with amenities that include a pool, gym, gated parking, billiards room, hotel room and storage, the unit Dorian purchased in the building was also the right price. “There are not a lot of buildings in the Central West End with the amenities you can get here plus the amount of square footage and bonus outdoor space you get in this unit, STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM

APRIL 2017

Dorian explains. And because Dorian purchased her unit at such a great price, she was able to make it a “wow” in the design elements. Connecting with interior designer Candice Wideman of Youtopia Designs, the two started with a blank slate to transform the loft into a comfortable urban oasis that combined elements of New York and St. Louis. “I came from a very traditional and conservative home,” Dorian says. “This building has more of an urban feel, and I wanted the interior to also refle t that.” What Dorian didn’t want was for the space to feel too cold, especially with some of the industrial elements like the concrete pillars and ceilings. Candice helped Dorian to make her home warm and comfortable by blending the styles into one cohesive look. “Dorian basically brought nothing from her previous residence,” says Candice, who enjoyed getting creative to find the right pieces for each space. For Dorian, the draw of a loft is that it is very open; but she

40

also needed to have some sort of distinction among rooms. Candice brought it all together through the furniture choices and layout. A tile choice set the color scheme for the main living areas. The fi eplace, which Dorian loves, was simply a blank, beige wall. Candice envisioned the fi eplace as the focal point of the room, so she knew she needed something to guide your eye toward it. She found a great tile with a wood finish and hints of blue. She carried the serene shade throughout the open, airy space. Two sets of sliding doors with access to the outdoor patio were a challenge to the designer and homeowner when trying to decide where to place furniture. “We were very limited with where furniture could go,” Candice explains. “We knew we had to block one of the sliding doors and finally found the right arrangement that didn’t hinder Dorian’s view and still allowed her access to her outdoor space.” The configuration includes a gray L-shaped sofa and two accent

chairs that pick up the blue in the fi eplace tile. An abstract coffee table can be pulled out and twisted into different sizes and configura ions depending on Dorian’s needs. Dorian also needed a place to sit and eat, so a dining space was created in the living area. “I wanted a table large enough to be able to entertain,” says Dorian. The rustic wood table can be pulled out if needed and includes a mix of metal and leather chairs and a bench. To fill the blank space on the wall Candice found a large mirror, which keeps the space feeling open while also pulling in the design elements of the table and chairs. Many of the wood elements found throughout the open living space are carried into the guest bedroom, which also doubles as Dorian’s offic when she works from home. Because she needed the room to serve two purposes, the designer and homeowner settled on a Murphy bed that could be folded down when there were

out-of-town guests. The challenge the two faced was finding a bed that had a good-sized, functional desk on the other side. Another challenge in the guest space was a large access panel in the middle of one of the walls. There wasn’t really a good way to get around it. Dorian found a beautiful print of St. Louis that would cover the spot. To complete the wall, Candice painted a darker stripe to make it pop. The gallery wall is now a nod to the East coast and Midwest, and Dorian thinks it really makes her out-of-town guests feel welcome. While the rest of the loft has a more rustic, transitional look, the master bedroom is all about the glam. “It was fun to get to work with a single, female homeowner because it allowed me to be able to play up the feminine elements,” Candice says. Calling it Dorian’s private sanctuary, the master bedroom mixes drama, texture and sparkle. The grasscloth wallpaper accent wall was selected to add drama to STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM

A murphy bed was the ideal solution for the spare room, which functions as both a guest bedroom and home office. A gallery accent wall is another nod to the homeowner's love for St. Louis and New York City.

the room and accentuate the tall ceilings. “The wallpaper’s dark color closes in the space to make it feel more intimate,” explains Candice. And Dorian loves the little bit of texture it adds. Layered on top of the matte-finished wallpaper, the metallic prints add that touch of sparkle and shine. A variety of metals also glimmers in the master, including brass, pewter, gold and silver. Two layered mirrors, an application Candice loves to incorporate, pull together all the metals in the space. “I knew we needed two mirrors to create drama, and I thought the different heights and widths would complement each other," Candice explains. To complete the master retreat, the homeowner requested a sitting area. “They are so classic and romantic,” she says. An added “bonus” space, Candice and Dorian wanted

44

the outdoor patio to feel like another room of the house, so they incorporated the same airy color scheme into the furnishings. Dorian loves leaving the doors open on a nice day. “The patio really added overall living space to the smaller loft,” she says. Dorian has now called St. Louis home for a year and a half, and she loves showing off her beautiful loft (and new city) to family and friends who frequently visit. Blending the urban elements of the loft building with comfortable furnishings, her loft is light and airy…a warm design that will feel fresh for years to come. “FUN”!

Designer Laura Lee fulfilled he clients’ vision – and captured their sense of whimsy – in this fashionable country club residence. By Barb Wilson Photography by Alise O’Brien

It was the need for more space that prompted Melinda and John Ross to start looking for a “forever” home. They loved to entertain; their two children would soon be teenagers; and they wanted to stay in the immediate near-West County vicinity. Co-owner of a commercial real estate company, John was well attuned to available properties, and the couple eventually focused on an established neighborhood adjoining Bellerive Country Club, where they were members. They purchased a 1.7-acre lot that backed to the golf course, but was occupied by a 1973-vintage home. “We knew the yard would be great for the kids, and it was big enough for a pool,” John explains. The initial plan was to raze the existing house and rebuild. Working with architect Kelly Stockie, however, it was determined that the 3,500-square-foot ranch was a good candidate for renovation and addition. Expanding with each item on the family’s “wish list,” the final design enlarged the total living space to approximately 10,000 square feet and converted the in-grade lower level to a walk-out – a project that would involve extensive regrading of the yard. Construction began under the supervision of Steve Terbrock, president of Terbrock Luxury Homebuilders, and by April of 2015, framing was completed, the roof was on, and it was time to bring in an interior designer. As luck would have it, Terbrock and Stockie were simultaneously in the process of renovating the home of designer Laura Lee, owner of Laura Lee Home, and they recommended her to the Rosses. Laura quickly grasped her clients’ objectives. “This family is all about fun,” she says. “They favor traditional styling, but STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM

comfort, functionality and plenty of storage space were defini e priorities.” The designer’s challenge was to create a décor that was tasteful and elegant, yet refle tive of the family’s active lifestyle and vibrant personality. After suggesting a number of modifications to the floo plan, Laura supplied CAD drawings for layout of the kitchen and, as interior construction shifted into full gear, weekly meetings kept all of the participants synchronized. Flooring throughout the main level was replaced with marble tile and oak. Laura designed the entry arch and colonnade that separates the kitchen, breakfast room and formal dining room from the sunken, walnut-paneled living room. Meanwhile, countless fabric samples from KDR provided ideas for the color scheme. “Melinda prefers quiet blues and grays, but John is a huge fan of the musician Prince, so she wanted to include some purple,” Laura chuckles. Together, they developed a basic palette of light, neutral hues, with surprising pops of color to give each space its distinctive character. The emphasis on accent color is particularly evident in the open-concept kitchen. Surrounded by rich cream Amish cabinetry and a muted custom marble backsplash, Laura wanted the granite-topped, 6’-by-11’ island to “make a statement.” When she couldn’t find a blue stain that coordinated perfectly with the Blue Nile granite, she mixed the paint and glaze herself! An avid cook, Melinda was determined to have a specific storage space STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM

for everything in the kitchen. Laura responded by incorporating every imaginable convenience, from a Keurig cup drawer to spice-rack pullouts, double-decker cutlery storage and even a stepladder cabinet. In the bayed breakfast room, the sleek round pedestal table is highlighted by lattice-back CR Laine chairs in a cheerful light aqua. Anticipating the inevitable spills, the chairs are upholstered in an easy-care performance fabric and set on a durable indoor/ outdoor rug. John’s affin y for Prince was subtly acknowledged in the formal dining room, which is furnished with a mahogany Queen Anne dining ensemble that had been a gift from his parents. Thibaut wallcovering in a soft purple-and-metallic floral establishes an elegant, traditional ambience for the room, and embroidered linen host chairs were added for scale and a more transitional effect. Dominated by Melinda’s favorite blues and grays, the fi eside living room overlooks the patio and is ultra-comfy, with a contoured sofa in a woven linen blend, tufted swivel chairs, a laminated onyx coffee table on a plinth base and a nail head-trimmed wing chair in striated chenille. From the outset, expansion of the bedroom suites had been a primary objective, and Laura devoted special attention to the luxurious baths. A veritable spa, the master bath features an oversize, glass-enclosed shower separating the his/her vanity areas. Tiles resembling sea glass line the walls, complementing the Azul Aran granite that tops the espresso-stained Amish cabinetry. For her bath, the owners’ preteen daughter chose a lovely shade of seafoam, and Laura completed the design with fresh white cabinetry, a Fantasy Brown quartzite countertop, crystal knobs and charming sconce lighting. Feminine and sophisticated, it’s a private haven this youngster is sure to enjoy for years to come.

Renovating the home’s lower level was a major undertaking. Originally below ground, the space was dark and low-ceilinged, and the ultimate solution was to lower the rear yard, allowing for a walk-out and full-length windows. Ductwork was removed to raise the ceilings, resulting in a wonderfully voluminous space filled with natural light. In addition, the entire home was automated, with all of the systems and electronics operable from a smartphone and/or installed iPads.

There are two hallmarks that dominate the landscape in this stunning Ladue garden. One is a profusion of hydrangeas that fl w along walkways, drift through beds and even climb brick walls. The other is an immense, regal grandiflora magnolia that holds court against the back of the red brick house and makes a sweeping bow across the brick patio to embrace both hard structures and fold them into the beauty of the garden. The Georgian-style house, much of the landscaping and the many planters surrounding the home create a classical, formal impression. But that is tempered by the softly rounded, nodding hydrangea blossoms and graceful, curving magnolia branches, which project an air of warm, gracious, Southern hospitality. Both the shrubs and the tree are treasured by the homeowner, notes Rand Rosenthal of Rand Rosenthal Design Group, who tends the garden. “She loves the hydrangeas,” he says. “She loves to cut them and bring them into the house and to give bouquets to friends.” Rand has used a number of different hydrangeas so that one hydrangea or another will be blooming from early summer through fall. Because the blossoms stay on the plant and change color as they age, all have a

long season of interest. First to bloom are the "Annabelles" that thrive in a part-shade situation and feature large mops of white fl wers that droop on graceful stems. Close on their heels are the oakleaf hydrangeas with conical white blossoms that turn to pink. They will take full sun as well as part sun. In fall, the leaves turn a beautiful mahogany red. Climbing hydrangeas cover the shaded back wall of the brick garage. In the early summer, foliage, that from a distance appears to be dark-green ivy leaves, suddenly glows with hundreds of flat, sparkling-white saucers of tiny blossoms. In the winter, the bare branches create an interesting silhoutte on the flat garage wall. “It is beautiful when the snow falls on it,” Rand says. For color the homeowner and Rand love both "Nikko Blue" and "Endless Summer" hydrangeas. Sought out for its electric color, Nikko Blue can be a bit temperamental as it fl wers on old wood. A harsh winter or sudden cold snap in the spring can literally nip it in the bud. Hybridized to bloom on both old and new wood, Endless Summer does not have the brilliant blue color of Nikko Blue, but it will bloom reliably every summer and well into fall. Soil acidity affects the

color of both varieties. To ensure the best blue color, Rand increases acidity by treating the earth surrounding the shrubs with aluminum sulfate in early spring. In alkaline soil both varieties will bloom pink. Later in the summer "Tardiva" and "Limelight" hydrangeas shine out. Tardivas often resemble small trees with spears of conical white blossoms shooting outward and upward. Limelights look more like large shrubs with huge, cone-shaped, lime-green blossoms that change to white and then rose. The weight of the fl wers often causes the branches to arch. All hydrangeas can be cut as fresh fl wers and also dried. Both Tardiva and oakleaf hydrangea blossoms have a light, sweet scent, Rand notes. The other hallmark, the magnolia at the back of the house, is probably technically in the wrong place. Undoubtedly planted many, many years ago as a small sapling, the tree has thrived despite being surrounded on all sides by brick. Grown more beautiful each year, it has been allowed to branch naturally with limbs that curve and dip toward the ground. “I think the tree was there before she moved in,” Rand says. “She really babies it. She is very diligent; she has an arborist come out regularly and fertilize it and brace branches. Whenever we are working here, she has us put a soaker hose on it. She loves to cut the blossoms and float them in the fountain when she has parties. They have a light lemon scent.” The homeowner had a house in Naples, FL, as well as St. Louis, and she loves the tropical look of the foliage surrounding her Florida home. In summer, she brings that look to her patio up north. “The patio is the one place we have full sun,” Rand explains. “We put a lot of color in containers and use a lot of tropicals. She loves palms. We have bright hibiscus, both in tree form and tucked in with smaller plants. She loves the color of mandevilla vines.” Rand often trains the mandevillas to grow up through the palms. With a great deal of focus on the patio, where the homeowner loves to entertain, Rand changes out many containers four times a year. In fall and winter, the hallmark hydrangeas and magnolias do double duty with dried hydrangeas and magnolia foliage spilling over with seasonal interest.

If you have hydrangeas in your own garden and want to bring bouquets of those beautiful fl wers indoors, you often can have mixed results with some blossoms holding up well while others wilt within a day or two. Here are a few tips to keep all the blossoms you cut looking fresh: — In the garden, cut in the morning and select only the most mature blossoms. Clip the stem on a diagonal and while still in the garden, plunge the stem immediately into a container of tepid water. — Once you are in the house, strip off all the le ves. Leaving the leaves on shortens the life of the fl wers as the leaves compete with the fl wer for moisture. If you want hydrangea foliage, select a branch or two with no fl wers — Recut stems a second time to the length you want, cutting again on the diagonal and make a second vertical cut up the stem. The shorter the stem, the longer the fl wer will last. Place the stem for 30 seconds in a container of just boiled water to dissolve sap and allow the blossom to take up the maximum amount of water. — If you have some extra time, you can condition the blossoms by submerging the entire stem to just below the fl wer head in a container of lukewarm water immediately after you have recut the stems. Then cover the blossoms with a damp paper towel and move them to a cool location for several hours. You can also condition by submerging the entire blossom in a sink or bathtub of cool water for 20 minutes. — When arranging the fl wers, adding a floral p eservative to the water is always a good idea. Change water and recut stems regularly. — If after all that you still have a wilted blossom or two, try recutting the stems and plunging the entire wilted hydrangea into a sink of cool water for about an hour, making sure the stem is under the surface of the water. That may rehydrate the blossom and allow it to bounce back to its previous beauty. See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources and additional photos.

BURST OF

COLOR

Wow your neighbors with hyper-vivid fl wers sprouting in your garden this spring. Your garden will pop with bright shades of pink, orange and yellow against the greenery. Check out local landscapers' favorite varieties to plant for a vibrant garden glow. By Melissa Mauzy

“Conefl wer ‘Tomato Soup’ is a vibrant, low-maintenance perennial and is one of my favorites because it attracts an array of species including birds, butterflies and hummingbi ds. Its beautiful, fi e-inch scarlet blossoms are enjoyed from late spring through late summer and add a gorgeous pop of color amongst its other fl wer friends.” Bob Lovatto, Poynter Landscape, Architecture and Construction.

“Although not a fl wer, the Acorus minimus and Acorus 'Ogon' are defini ely hyper-vivid plants that can brighten the landscape. The vivid yellow of these grass-like perennials illuminate the garden with a glow, and when surrounding other plants of darker foliage, the contrast will make the landscape pop with color particularly on top of the popular dark mulches. Acorus (Sweet Flag) grows very well in those troublesome moist locations around sprinkler heads and run-off.” Julie Evans Straatmann, Passiglia's Nursery & Garden Center.

“Dianthus gratianopolitanus ‘Firewitch’ is a low-growing perennial that blooms a carpet of fuchsia pink/purple fl wers that will truly catch your eye. The smoky, blue foliage, in contrast with the almost neon pink blooms, is an amazing color combination that really makes a statement. Dianthus is one of my favorite go-to plants when I’m needing a pop of color within rock gardens, along borders and walkways.” Morgan McAdams, Chesterfield Valley Nursery.

“As if painted by the most gifted artist, each remarkable fl wer of the Queen of Hearts Petunia is kissed with yellow and marked with perfectly formed valentine red hearts. The plants exhibit unbelievable vigor, producing an abundance of large, colorful flowers. At times the precious flowers will completely smother the entire plant.” Ann Lapides, Sugar Creek Gardens.

“Lantana is one of my favorite vivid-colored annuals. Lantanas come in colors of pink, yellow, red, orange, purple and multicolored. This plant will bloom all summer through fall, and butterflies and pollinators love the nectar. It is an easy, drought-resistant must-have annual in the landscape.” David Sherwood, Sherwood’s Forest.

The Children’s Garden Kids can explore the interdependence of all nature in a variety of ecosystems. Edited by Melissa Mauzy Photography courtesy of Missouri Botanical Garden

Youngsters can go on a “Missouri adventure” in the Doris I. Schnuck Children’s Garden at the Missouri Botanical Garden. The Children’s Garden teaches kids 12 and under about the interdependence of all nature – humans, insects, animals and plants – in a variety of ecosystems. The Children’s Garden is an opportunity to experience wetlands, prairies, woodlands, ponds, rivers and caves along four paths. The Children’s Garden opens onto Adventurer’s Plaza where kids can explore the Adventurer's Path, Botanist's Path, Settler's Path and Discoverer's Path. Each path has unique activities for kids to play in. Kids can go spelunking in a cave, play in waterfalls and even climb into a tree house. Native Missouri wild ginger, golden Alexander and tall conefl wers can also be seen throughout the garden. The total two-acre site shows how early settlers depended on and interacted with plants and nature.

62

Younger children, ages 3 to 8, can also head to The Children’s Garden Nature Explore Classroom. The Nature Explore Classroom is an outdoor area that features hands-on natural materials in creative, unstructured play. Kids build “tree cookies” and blocks, make music with rain sticks, dance with colorful scarves or make art from plant material. Near the Children’s Garden is also a special place for nursing moms and children who need a quiet comfortable space. Moms can take their little ones to the Calming Room in the Brookings Exploration Center. The room has comfortable chairs, soft lighting and soothing music. Calming activities in the room include books, drawing supplies, tactile toys, and soft mats. See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

FLAVOR, FRAGRANCE

& FOOD Herbs are a most versatile plant best for their savory and aromatic properties.

If you want to know anything about growing herbs in the Midwest, talk with Mary Hammer. She’s a member of the St. Louis Herb Society and chairman of the group’s upcoming Herb Sale at the Missouri Botanical Garden April 27-29. The effervescent Mary can fill a book just off the top of her head when she taps into her knowledge of how to grow, use and harvest these stars of the garden, kitchen and even the medicine cabinet. Recently, she shared with us what she calls her “baker’s dozen” top culinary herbs: Basil (annual); salad burnet (perennial); onion chives (perennial); dill (annual); French tarragon (perennial); lavender (perennial); lemon verbena (perennial); spearmint mint (perennial); Italian flat leaf parsley (biennial); oregano (perennial); rosemary (tender perennial); thyme (perennial); sage (perennial). While cilantro/coriander may be the herb of the year selected by the International Herb Association, it is hard to grow in St. Louis, Mary says. “It doesn’t like to be cooler than 75 degrees and doesn’t like to be hotter than 80. Otherwise, it goes to seed. If you like cilantro, the easiest thing is to buy it in the grocery store.” For the best results, perennial herbs can be planted the last week in April, but annual herbs should not be planted until the second week in May. “They don’t like to be wet or cold,” she notes. Almost all herbs can be successfully grown in pots, Mary says. The one exception is basil. “The plants generally get so big; they do best in the ground.” But she cautions against putting a number of herbs in the same pot. “That generally doesn’t give any of the plants enough space to grow,” she points out. “It’s best to give each herb its own pot and then group the pots together for a nicer display.”

Mint, she emphasizes, should always be grown in a large pot because its spreading, invasive nature can overwhelm other garden plants. “The best time to harvest any herb is before it blooms,” Mary advises. “Once the energy of the plant has to go for fl wers, the leaves tend to get a little bitter. The best time of day to harvest is in the morning after the dew has dried. Dry the herbs between paper towels and make sure to label them so when they are dried, you know what plant those leaves are from. Store the leaves whole in labeled glass jars; don’t crumple them up until you are ready to use them. Keep the jars in a dark place.” How long can you keep dried herbs? “Rub them in your hand; you should still get a strong aroma. You can keep them as long as they give you some taste,” Mary says. For additional fun facts from Mary Hammer regarding growing herbs, visit the St. Louis Homes & Lifestyles website. More extensive information on growing herbs and great recipes are available on the St. Louis Herb Society website at www.stlouisherbsociety.org. There is also a list of the 120 new and hard-to-find varieties that will be available at the group’s herb sale at the Missouri Botanical Garden’s Orthwein Floral Display Hall in the Ridgway Visitor Center. Herb sale hours are April 27, 5-8 p.m. for Missouri Botanical Garden members only. April 28, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for everyone, and on April 29, 9 a.m. to noon only if there are plants remaining. Go Bold or

GO HOME

These two Creve Coeur residents weren’t afraid to break from the ubiquitous Scandinavian color trend — and the finished look is so refreshing it’ll have even the most steadfast homeowner reconsidering bold interiors. By Jamie Siebrase Photography by Anne Matheis

Designer Stacy Hillman’s motto is straightforward: “The more color you use, the easier it is to decorate,” she says. When her clients were ready to put the finishing touches on the 4,689-square-foot villa built in 2015 by Benton Homebuilders, Hillman incorporated Moroccan and Indonesian elements for a bold but sophisticated palette. When you’re using big colors, it pays to plan. “We spent a full week on paint color,” Hillman admits. She and the homeowners landed on two analogous Sherwin-Williams hues: Reynard and Torchlight — both of which are intense, but also warm enough for firs -floor fun tions: eating and entertaining. In the open-concept kitchen and dining space, sleek and modern additions – Slamp plastic and Swarovski crystal pendants, for example – are balanced with traditional finishes and a few antiques: a wood-top dining table and high-backs nestled below an heirloom chandelier. Meanwhile staggered Décor custom taupe cabinets supply rhythm and visual depth matching in vigor white granite countertops and the variegated engineered birch floo ing. Eye-catching aesthetic starts at the feet, and it doesn’t stop until it hits the chocolate brown ceilings. Don’t be fooled: “A dark ceiling looks easy, but it’s more involved than you’d think,” Hillman says, noting that homeowners interested in trying the look should budget in extra time and cash for a level 5 drywall finish plus th ee coats of paint. The ceiling color continues into the living room, where white box beams add definition and an impactful slate wall steals the show along with the breath of most guests! The devil’s also in the details: Recessed orange nooks add a subtle burst of color; back in the kitchen, diamond grout makes the backsplash sparkle, and glass outlet covers – scored at Susan Goldstick Decorative Hardware and Home Décor – add extra oomph.

slhl SMALL SCALE

The living room still manages to feel homey, despite its size. Hillman credits colorful accents: yellow walls, of course, along with blue carpeting, burnt-orange zebra print chairs (all fabrics were sourced through Nan Ruvel Interior Design) and a funky blown-glass lamp with an orange shade; there are even specks on green in black patterned wingbacks and floor plant . Upstairs, the master bathroom pays peaceful homage to utilitarian colors, but in a playful way. Warm gray walls, Pergaminho granite and white porcelain tile are the base for dark cabinets, a red vanity chair and a teal barrel vaulted ceiling. The lavatory sparkles, too, with stainless-steel outlet covers, diamond grout and crystal lighting. Take a look at that pocket door! Like other custom doors located throughout the home, it was hand-painted by artist Kelly Evans, who did a special mural in a bedroom designated for the homeowners’ grandchildren. A darling – and daring – space theme begins up top, where planets are laid out among a missile-shaped fan and shimmering, dangling stars from Metro Lighting. Color eases into clouds as the eye comes down to earth, where you’ll notice dual sets of tubular steel bunk beds. “The picture,” Hillman says, “doesn’t do the room justice.” There’s a lot going on, but it works because it’s done right — and that’s a theme Hillman carried throughout this fabulous villa. Lower-Level Lounge

By Barbara E. Stefàno Photography by Matthew Harrer

An Illinois couple transforms a traditional basement into a fabulous place to entertain. Christa and Dave Guilbeault’s home was roof-to-foundation traditional when mother-and-daughter design team Shirley Strom and Katie Marvin of S&K Interiors first set eyes on it last spring. And then the Glen Carbon, IL, couple proposed a lower-level redesign that was right up the designers’ alley. “Christa loves Hollywood glamour,” says Shirley. “When they moved in, they had decorated with a more traditional look, but they entertain a lot so they wanted something different for entertaining.” So she and Katie set about designing a home bar and lounge that hearkens back to the Golden Era of Hollywood with lush fabrics, bold color and plenty of sparkle. First on the agenda was opening up the approximately 1,500-square-foot space by removing a half-wall that closed off part of the main room. This opened up room for seating where guests could gather to watch sporting events on the big-screen TV. Next, Shirley and Katie used the turquoise from the Guilbeaults’ adjoining outdoor space as the main color for the basement walls, and bar and kitchen backsplashes, to create a unified look. It was the perfect palette for rich woods, metal, glass and fabric to mingle upon. “We like to push boundaries, so we work a lot with luxurious materials. We defini ely laid on the glamorous nightclub factor,” Shirley says. The aesthetic shows through in the large, stuffed sofas, padded booth and plush, royal-purple ottoman where guests can get comfortable while they gaze

at the wall fi eplace. The two designed several custom pieces for the space, including the ottoman in the lounge area, the mirrored dining table and bar stools; cabinetry in the bar area and separate kitchen is also custom. Recessed lighting provides baseline illumination, but it’s the shimmering chandeliers that bring out the lavish speakeasy character of the room. Placed on a dimmer, these lights can be adjusted to further enhance the intimacy of the space. “We wanted to amp up the nightclub feel, the bling, with a lot of crystal.” Shirley says the redesign, which was completed over a three-month period last summer, has inspired Christa and Dave to entertain more often, and it’s quite the conversation piece, too. “It surprises people. Everything else is so traditional, and then you enter this nightclub area and it’s ‘Wow!’ No one expects the glamor." See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

Incognito Entertaining The latest in technology has homeowners putting hidden screens and theater equipment in nearly any room in the house. By Shannon Craig

F

Following World War II, the television set procured a place of honor in most American family rooms. The original cathode ray tube (CRT) set, though luxuriously expensive enough to warrant a prime location in any den, was an eyesore of protruding antennae and exposed wire. And though TVs have certainly become sleeker—and for some, sexier—since then, the same in-your-face nature of the things still plague those wanting the focal point of their interiors to be something besides a hulking square of plastic, wire and glass. “Technology is always pushing forward and improving,” assures Aaron Walbrandt, of the eponymous Walbrandt Technologies in St. Louis. As more people rely on personal computers and cellphones for their moment-to-moment, day-to-day entertainment, some homeowners are upgrading their in-house systems to suit a more theater-style experience with ‘incognito entertainment.’

80

“It’s a totally different experience,” David Young of The Sound Room explains. With larger-than-life in-ceiling screens, 4K projectors and speakers that make the movie theater around the corner seem weak, the new home theater experience is entertainment without the décor blight, or the mysteriously sticky floors of the cinema. “Some people want the theater experience without having to dedicate a room in the basement solely for that purpose,” says Walbrandt. “With a well-placed, hidden drop-down screen, you put that theater experience where you will enjoy it the most.”…and free your mantel up for, you know, books and pictures of your family. Aesthetics aside, both Walbrandt and Young agree there are other benefits to going incognito, such as keeping expensive electronics away from rambunctious children. “[Walbrandt Technologies] did an installation recently in an attic-turned-rec-room where the kids played pretty

often.” The parents had considerably more peace of mind knowing that someone’s tiny head wasn’t going to annihilate a not-so-tiny entertainment investment. “Even if you don’t go for the home theater,” says Young, “there are options like TV lifts and drop-downs that can hide your flat screen in the ceiling, or the floo . There’s even a system that (electronically) lowers a canvas over your screen, so your television is literally art when it isn’t being used.” Like the latest-and-greatest TVs, a home theater setup requires a financial commitment. “The range in price can be staggering;” Walbrandt admits, “from a few thousand to several hundred thousand dollars. But going all out doesn’t mean you must take out a second mortgage. There are many products that produce fantastic results for a very reasonable price. But,” to understand the value, he adds, “it only takes watching one movie or the big game in 4K,

on a 135” screen, with the Dolby Atmos surround sound.” Furthermore, Young explains the new home theater simply as, “a sanctuary, a way to get away while never leaving your house.” Though incognito entertainment may not seem ideal for every room, Young and Walbrandt explain that with controllable lighting and black-out shades, in-ceiling or in-wall speakers and sub-woofers embedded in the floo , it’s possible for virtually any room to become a home theater. “People tell us they use it just as often as a traditional TV,” says Young of incognito theater options. “But it just isn’t like anything else out there. When you’re talking inches, you’re talking TV. When you’re talking FEET, now you’re talking home theater…and it all disappears at the push of a button.” See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources and additional photos.

Places to go, things to do and see, and people who are leaving their mark on the world of style. By Melissa Mauzy

St. Louis University School of Law, St. Louis, MO Photography by Sam Fentress

Saint Louis University’s new School of Law transformed a nondescript 1960s building into a contemporary, state-of-the-art landmark. Strategically located steps away from the City’s Civil Courts and Thomas F. Eagleton United States Courthouse in downtown St. Louis, the redevelopment takes advantage of the interaction between the law school and the downtown community. The 260,000-square-foot law school, designed by Lawrence Group, is a contemporary, student-centered facility with space for

clinics, classrooms accommodating 40 to 112 students, seminar rooms, dedicated jury and negotiations rooms, library and restaurant with outdoor seating. Generous space is also available for individual and group study with 18 study rooms, a two-floor large reading room and soft seating stacked to align with open stairwells spanning multiple floors. The addition of a 12th floor provides a 300-seat courtroom, pavilion and outdoor patio. Large windows across the top floor allow spectacular views of Downtown, as well as ample natural light.

Moderna Museet Malmö, Malmö, Sweden Photography by Åke E:son Lindman

Moderna Museet Malmö is a new branch of the Swedish Museum of Modern Art designed by Tham & Videgård Arkitekter. The former electricity station building dating back to 1900 has been refurbished to meet international museum standards. A new extension marks the new museum, which includes a new entrance and reception spaces as well as a cafeteria and upper gallery. On the exterior, a perforated orange façade connects to the existing brick and introduces a contemporary element. The perforated surface gives visual depth and is animated through shadow patterns. The inside of the building was spatially reconstructed. Two new staircases loop visitors between the grand turbine hall and upper exhibition rooms.

Located in the heart of The Gulch, the city’s most up-and-coming and vibrant neighborhood, Thompson Nashville rises 12 stories and includes 224 guest rooms. Designed by Hastings Architecture Associates, the building is intentionally set back off the street to allow the two-story Marsh House restaurant and cantilevered second-floor terrace to relate to the structures. The main building is a beautifully curved glass display.

CLASSIC OR CRAZE

TURNTABLES For our April color and technology issue, we asked local design and tech professionals their opinion on turntables. Do you still rock out to the old vinyls? Or are these age-old players a thing of the past?

Photography courtesy of Pro-Ject Audio Systems.

CLASSIC

“We’ve sold more turntables last year than in any prior year. Mostly to younger people!” David Young, The Sound Room. “People who have a real passion for music prefer the richer sound that a turntable provides over its more tinny, electronic cousin, the MP3. For the love of good music, I say turntables are a classic. They’re defini ely niche: not everybody will need, want or even see the purpose of having one. But for those who can truly hear the difference, a beautiful turntable defini ely has a place in design. Not to mention its folksy, retro vibe!” Dana King, NEXT Project Studio.

CRAZE

“I love seeing them come back into play. I think people love them for their nostalgic presence, conversation and entertainment, but I don't think they will be a go-to for music daily in a household. I think it's a craze.” Pamela Calvert, Pamela Calvert Interiors.

“Turntables have proven to be a classic. They remained in use despite the advent of digital music options like Spotify or iTunes and the invention of the compact disc. Many popular stores are selling turntables despite more convenient listening options. Given their history it’s safe to say that they will remain relevant to vintage lovers and music aficionados ali e.” Therese Diedrich, Savvy Surrounding Style.
