Taking it
This year, I bought myself a gardening stool. The little guy is pretty ingenious. He rolls sideways on all surfaces, the seat can tilt in every direction without sending me tumbling into the garden face first and the height is adjustable! Sounds perfect, except I can’t seem to keep myself on it. The doc tells me I have to cut down on the up-and-down gardening squat because I sprained my knee gardening earlier this spring and it is taking forever to heal. So,I am trying to change a lifelong gardening habit by convincing myself that I should havebeen utilizing the stool long ago. Weeding is now a piece of cake with my pal, the stool. No more backaches the next morning from bending over to pull those little, and sometimes big,intruders. I just roll right along and eliminate the invaders 1-2-3. I'm confident I'll soon master my new gardening practices because the alternative of messing up my knee really cramps my style. I like to get where I'm going and accomplish what I'm doing quickly and limping tends to get in the way! Especially with the summer season upon us, quality outdoor living and entertaining is on everyone's agenda. With the wide range of choices in outdoor furniture andaccessories (page 12) as well as fabrics (page 62), the decorating experience can be full of possibilities. Investing in fade-resistant products may cost a little more,but in the long run, they last longer and you won't need to replace each year. A rule of thumb while making your outdoor design choices: your outdoor space is an extension of your indoor spaces. Carry the color scheme and style outdoors. Not enough chairs for an outdoor dinner party? By sticking to the indoor/outdoor rule, you can now mix in your dining room chairs. It will look fabulous. Refresh your outdoor space with pops of color. Plant as many containers as you possibly can and strategically place them on your patio or deck making sure they are overflowing with beautiful flowers or veggies. As the summer progresses, you can always move them as the sun changes it's course through the sky. If you're feeling overwhelmed, hire one of the many experienced professionals our city has to offer. Marci Davis transforms rebar, steel and concrete into natural pieces of furniture that are more than meets the eye.

It’s a bright, breezy day, but the chickens are nervous. A hawk’s screech is stressing them out, far more so than the blowtorch roar or cement mixer growl that usually booms from Marci Davis’ workshop. We drop everything to guide the hens to safety, and I can’t help but notice the metaphor. Whether we’re talking about her unique art medium, “Ferrocement Faux Bois” or her agitated poultry, Davis is singularly, fiercely focused on preserving nature’s beauty. Davis is a rocailleur, a sculptor who transforms rebar, steel lathe and concrete into objects that appear to be crafted from wood. Her pieces are “functional outdoor sculptures,” like Adirondack chairs, tables and garden benches. If you see one in a garden, you’ll swear it’s made out of branches and lumber. Only the concrete’s telltale weight gives it away.

Working with real timber certainly would be easier. Each custom-designed piece takes a minimum of a month to complete. First, Davis creates a frame out of rust-inhibited rebar and wraps it with steel lathe. She uses safety twist pliers to clamp the mesh to the rebar. The pliers whirl wire easily, as if it were cotton candy, which just might be the coolest part of the whole process. Then Davis adds several layers of concrete to the steel frame. Each one is hand-mixed with varying amounts of fiber and ash, in order to make the concrete even stronger. Lastly, she sculpts the final layer of concrete, giving it wood-like knots and a grain. She makes her own sculpting tools, using everything from wood sticks to dog-grooming brushes. While it’s a labor of love, it is hard labor. A bag of cement alone weighs

94 pounds. And then there’s the heavy burden of time management. When Davis is working with the wet concrete, she only has a little time to sculpt before it becomes solid. If it’s a sculpting day, she is tied to the workshop for eight or more hours. “It’s an unrelenting medium, and it can be hard for people to understand that I can’t leave the workshop sometimes. I never could have done this when I had small children,” Davis says. Even so, she is passionate about her work. “I love every bit, even cutting the rebar,” she says. “I put a little ‘bluebird of happiness’ on all my pieces because this makes me so happy.” You can see the bluebirds and examples of Marci Davis’ work on her blog site. SLHL: Is there a limit to the number of colors or materials you should use? Eric: Yes, there is a limit, but it takes an experienced eye to truly know when enough is enough. As a general rule of thumb, simple is better. Adding too many textures and colors to a space via the hardscape can create a busy, chaotic space. The hardscape is an important piece of the landscape, but it needs to work in conjunction with the plant material and existing residence.
SLHL: What kind of maintenance is required for a stone or paver patio? Eric: It depends on the material. SLHL: What are the advantages of using pavers for a patio as opposed to concrete? Eric: In my opinion, pavers have a nicer look, adding a more authentic texture and color to the landscape. Pavers are also a great choice in St. Louis because they can adjust to the freeze-thaw cycle without cracking. If an individual paver is damaged, it easily can be repaired as good as new.
SLHL: Why are stone and paver patios considered green? Eric: There are some paver systems on the market that have been designed to allow water to percolate through the patio versus running off and into the storm-water sewer system. If the amount of impervious surface can be lessened it greatly reduces runoff, thereby decreasing the strain on natural water systems.
SLHL: There are so many colors and styles from which to choose. What is the key to mixing colors and materials in your outdoor living space for a beautiful outcome? Eric: It is important to take in to account the surrounding context— the house color/material, any adjacent structures, and keeping in mind the overall desired aesthetic. It is important for the space to be in harmony with the existing conditions versus picking a paver you love by itself that does not fit the context.
SLHL: Can you add pavers over an existing concrete patio? Eric: Yes and no. If an existing concrete patio is in good shape – meaning, no substantial cracks or shifting – you could "dry-lay" pavers on top for a quick transformation. The downside is that if the concrete substrate cracks or shifts, you will find yourself needing to pick up the pavers and start over at some point. It is up to an experienced installer to assess the situation and give the homeowner the pros and cons to an overlay application. See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

And much of the time, he sources all the tomatoes and other foods he needs for his restaurants straight from the farmers. Yet, when the need arises, he’ll hit a local growers’ market and stand in line with the rest of us. or panzanella. He feels bad about what he’s about to do. And then he asks for every last tomato. That’s because The Block, his restaurants in the Central West End and Webster Groves, are built on a foundation of fresh, local food. “Our restaurants are mostly about the best seasonal products that we can get,” says Del Pietro, who co-owns the restaurants with his brother-in-law and co-chef Brian Doherty. “We’re letting the seasons and the ingredients
dictate the menu.” Their commitment to local, seasonal foods extends to meat, which is a focal point of the restaurants. In fact, the Webster Groves location includes a butcher shop. Space precluded putting a shop in the Central West End restaurant, but cuts of beef are available for sale there as well. to see the operations,” he says. “It’s a lot of fun.” Buying directly from farmers also has helped moderate the soaring cost of meat. “It helps us out tremendously that we cut out the middlemen and buy directly from the farmers.” In addition to selling meat, both restaurants have bottled seasoning

the cooking school Menu Pork and Dumplings • The chefs braise a pork shoulder with fennel, fennel fronds, oranges, tomatoes and white wine. They make ricotta-Parmesan dumplings, similar to gnocchi, and sauté them in olive oil and butter. When the pork is perfectly tender, they pull it into strands and serve it with the dumplings, moistening the dish with the intensely flavored braising liquid and topping it with lemon-herb-citrus gremolata. Burger • “We grind up this really, really good meat,” Del Pietro says, using trimmings that might include sirloin, petite fillet, rib-eye, New York strip, flank steak and short ribs. They serve the burgers on a brioche bun, topped with a fried farm-fresh egg – “with an almost neon yolk,” Del Pietro notes – and of course house-made pickles and pickled onions. “It’s just a burger, but a lot more goes into it.” Flash-Fried Brussels Sprouts • House-smoked bacon, caramelized onions, lemon aioli and a generous sprinkling of almond add layers of flavors to bright-green Brussels sprouts.

Authentically restored, this classic St. Louis residence suits its owners to a tee. Set on nearly two acres that were once part of the World’s Fair site, the majestic, all-brick multistory was built in 1925 and already had undergone several renovations before attracting the attention of Steve Katz six years ago. Steve is a St. Louis attorney, born and raised in Belleville. His wife Bonnie’s retail career brought her to St. Louis from Virginia in 1989, and their 22-year marriage has been characterized by extensive international travel, a zest for entertaining and a fascinating variety of mutual and individual interests. Although the couple maintained a condo in the Central West End, they were spending most of their time in their vacation home in northwestern Michigan. Tired of the lengthy commute, Steve began looking for a more convenient primary residence. “This house was ‘uniquely St. Louis’ and had great potential,” he remembers. “I wanted to bring it back to life.” Bonnie, however, had serious reservations. Once a Saint Louis Symphony Showhouse, the rooms were an eclectic mix of decors, and refurbishing the structure would require extensive work. Equally daunting was the challenge of being “faithful to the style of the house,” while adapting it to their personal taste and contemporary lifestyle. In fact, the renovation process took a full year. Plans were drawn and redrawn; plumbing, electrical and HVAC systems were updated,
and every surface of the 9,000-square-foot residence was refinished and/or painted. Crumbling decorative moldings were restored to their original beauty. (“The painter became obsessed with them,” the owners quip.) French casement doors were again made operable; layers of paint were stripped to reveal the rich walnut underneath; the kitchen was gutted; the screened porch was enclosed for a sunroom and upstairs, storm windows were added to protect and insulate the 90-year-old glass panes. While Steve supervised the construction efforts, Bonnie applied her considerable artistic talent to selecting the furnishings, assisted by Jane Ganz of Directions In Design. Their goal was a tasteful blend of antiques and contemporary pieces “with a heavy French influence.” The three fireplaces were preserved, as were the main level’s original chandeliers, trimwork and black-and-white foyer floor tiles. Fine cherry and walnut cabinetry was custom-crafted by Victor Hill of V3 Studios, who also designed the master closet systems. Jon Paul Designs proved an excellent source for gold-leaf mirrors and light fixtures of the period and several antique occasional tables, and several of the area rugs throughout the home were obtained from Halbert Rugs in the Central West End. Bonnie chose neutral tones for the vast living room. Grouped

around the marble fireplace, the main seating area features a sofa upholstered in soft gold velvet, flanked by settees in slate and gold damask. At the far end of the room, slate-blue club chairs create a more intimate conversation area, and a graceful chaise (Bonnie loves chaises!) provides additional seating. For a splash of color, she added two vivid landscapes by St. Louis artist Ahzad Bogosian. Open to the living room, the former music room was converted to a library/TV room, and beyond the library, the newly enclosed sunroom overlooks the patio and still has its rustic tile floor. In contrast to the living room’s muted hues, the formal dining room glows with warm color. Dominating the space are a stunning EJ Victor dining table and inlaid sideboard in mahogany; 12 tufted, nailhead-trimmed dining chairs, and an 18th-century Louis XV walnut armoire from Provence that stores Bonnie’s prized collection of table linens. Masterfully carved with fleurs-de-lis and medallions, the ceiling was previously a riot of colors. Now painted stark white, it’s an elegant counterpoint to the lush red and gold wall coverings. Although a complete departure from its origins, the renovated kitchen is a genuine showplace. Both avid cooks, Steve and Bonnie had “definite ideas” about their culinary workspace, which was configured by a Michigan design firm. The spatial footprint was retained, but the entire kitchen was redesigned around its restaurant-quality BlueStar appliances, including an eight-burner range and grill, nine-foot range hood, two wall ovens, a Salamander Broiler, warming drawer and an industrial microwave.
Suspended above a granite-topped island, the focal point is a pot rack arrayed with gleaming copper cookware. Beams add visual interest to the ceiling, and an oversize farmhouse sink with subway tile backsplash lends a traditional touch. The varied surface materials blend beautifully, and all serve a purpose. For example, the stainless-capped half-wall is hung with warming lights; the butcher-block counter has a built-in knife block, and the marble pastry counter is positioned at a lower level for kneading. When purchased, the home included seven bedrooms, three in the original portion of the house and four in a later addition. Lavishly furnished, the master bedroom has velvet-paneled walls and an adjacent sitting room, which probably served as a sleeping porch in an earlier era. Three of the addition’s bedrooms have been converted to studios, including Bonnie’s professionally equipped jewelry studio, where the owners pursue their creative passions. The fourth bedroom suite provides a wonderful private retreat for houseguests. True oenophiles, the owners transformed the basement into an atmospheric haven for wine tasting. Faux-textured walls line the staircase to the softly lit tasting room, where the walls were sandblasted to expose the original limestone. Antique chairs

surround a huge English farmhouse table, and the adjacent wine cellar houses their impressive collection of fine vintages. For entertainment, the third-floor theater boasts a 100-inch screen and 10 plush velvet seats reclaimed from Radio City Music Hall. Outdoors, the spectacular yard is still “a work in progress,” according to the owners. Screened by a row of trees, the pool house has been enlarged and redesigned to reflect the architectural styling of the
house. Two charming water features embellish the patio and pool area, and future plans call for significant modifications to the pool and deck. Brilliantly renovated, this magnificent home reflects the warmth and vitality of its multitalented owners to perfection. Traditional A Clayton teardown is restyled into an eclectic two-story that is the epitome of comfortable elegance.

any homeowners don’t dare tackle the planning and research required when purchasing a teardown, but a St. Louis couple knew a teardown was just what they were looking for as they made the move from central St. Louis County to the hub of the city in Clayton. Previous residents of University City and Creve Coeur, Clayton appealed to them for its proximity to the Metrolink, restaurants and retail. After searching for the right property with no success, the couple turned to architect Lauren Strutman. “Lauren suggested looking for a home with the back facing south,” the homeowner explains. “At her recommendation, we explored this orientation and found our home.” The property was perfect. The back faced south, and the home had an alley in back, so they were able to use the whole lot. The existing Cape Cod was also on an ideal street. The homeowner drew an initial layout and also compiled a folder of tear-out sheets from magazines, as well as photographs that she and her husband had taken of other homes they liked. They handed the folder over to Strutman, who turned their ideas into an initial draft. “It was a great decision to hire Lauren,” the homeowner says. “She and her staff are very familiar with the Clayton area, and her ideas really fit with what we were looking for.” Architecturally a turn-of-the-century Edwardian style home, the homeowners then brought in trusted interior designer Janice Rohan of Park Avenue Design, who they worked with in the past, to assist with the interior styling. “Janice helped determine the direction the interior of our home was going to take,” the homeowner notes. “She was great in making us edit our ideas to come together into a cohesive look.” Classic and traditional with comfortable antiques and lush fabrics, the home is warm and welcoming. “We focused a lot on the finishes in the home,” Rohan explains. “The combinations and layers in the finishes take the home from super traditional to a more eclectic traditional.” Rohan was also instrumental in ensuring the millwork fit with the period of other homes in the area. She was so successful that many visitors don’t realize the home is a teardown. “It happens all the time,” the homeowner says. “I wanted people to come into our home and not know how old it is.” One aspect of the design that was important to both the homeowners and Rohan was repurposing furnishings from the couple’s previous home. Using furnishings in new ways and in new spaces brings a fresh feel to the home. An intricate tile motif greets your feet in the entryway.

Designed on the smaller side with no room for furniture, the homeowners and designer knew the entry needed a design element to add interest to the space. Instead of a rug, a classic, North star motif, comprised of contrasting dark and light cut tiles, creates just the right amount of pizzazz. “We like to travel, and the motif resembles a compass rose,” the homeowner adds. “In fact, it almost exactly lines up with the orientation of the home.” Just to the right of the entry, the dining room’s hand-painted wallpaper is a showstopper. The organic print reflects the homeowner’s love of gardening and nature, while the subdued colors pop against the soft, streaked glaze of the woodwork and trim. An antique chest from Clark Graves Antiques is nestled between two windows letting in abundant amounts of natural light. Lush, silk draperies perfectly complement the exquisite wallpaper. Purchased in New Orleans, the antique 1800s French walnut dining table can open up to seat large parties or be closed in for more intimate gatherings. The frames of the Oly Studio chairs, covered in woven raffia, reflect a similar finish to the woodwork. A black opaline fixture from notable St. Louis artisan Bud Lewin lights the space and illuminates the delicate ceiling treatment, which is an applied silver leaf that is glazed for a burnished appearance. Across the entry from the dining room is the library, which was inspired by a red room the homeowner saw in a magazine. “Janice helped me to find the inspiration from the room in the magazine and bring it to life in this space,” the homeowner says. The red walls are done in a Venetian plaster treatment and have a soft sheen against the rustic finish of the painted molding. A wool, needlepoint rug from the homeowner’s previous home pulls in all the right colors – camel, black, cream and green. Rugs and fabrics were the basis for many of the room designs. "The homeowners both love fabric as much as I do," Rohan laughs. Woven, wool paisley window treatments dress up the windows in the library. In front of the windows, an antique sofa and matching chair found in St. Charles by the homeowner have been recovered. “I love buying antiques, but not the kind that are so precious that you can’t sit in them and enjoy them,” she notes. The two accent chairs placed between the built-in bookcases were lightly recovered in black and camel crewel embroidery done by hand on the back, as well as a cream and camel houndstooth fabric on the seat. A smartly placed dry bar connects the library to the living room and provides a nice flow to the home when entertaining. Hand-trowelled plaster walls, a travertine floor and dark-stained ceiling beams enhance the Old World ambience of the living room. proportions. Two antique candlesticks decommissioned from a church in Europe and purchased in New Orleans sit atop the mantel. Also brought from the owners’ previous home, two sofas covered in a crisp cotton rayon face one another. “The texture on the sofas is beautiful and elegant against the texture on the needlepoint rug,” Rohan points out. Other special pieces in the space include three Spanish leather panels that were once a large screen, as well as a Kentucky maple chest with an antique pitcher and bowl. While elegant and stylish for entertaining, the living room is all about bringing the outdoors in through two sets of French doors that lead to the covered patio and courtyard. Designed for all-season use, the covered back patio is accessible from the living room or the breakfast room. Off the patio, steps lead to the picturesque, quaint courtyard that is masterfully planted and maintained by the husband. A custom iron trellis and archway by Perpetua Iron add interest to the space in the winter months when the garden is bare and can be perfectly viewed from the breakfast-room windows. The breakfast room is a versatile space for both family dining and entertaining. Sheer drapes let in light from the courtyard. “The draperies add softness to the breakfast room and kitchen,” explains Rohan. “I think they also help to raise the style in the space to another level.” Neutral finishes in the adjoining kitchen provide a calming effect. The gray-washed wood cabinetry complements the beautiful quartzite island top and hand-glazed, crackled porcelain splash tiles. A salvaged barn-wood countertop from St. Joseph, MO, brings in an element of texture. Access to the second story is just off the kitchen. French doors lead to the peaceful master suite. The Oriental rug was the basis for the room’s design and is from the dining room in the owners’ previous residence. Two-toned silk draperies are a lush contrast to the neutral grasscloth wallpaper. An octagonal dressing and closet area with gray-mirrored walls connects the bedroom to the master bath. Silk draperies, a black and pewter soaking tub and antique mirrors amp up the glamour in the feminine master bath. “I like to mix masculine and feminine aspects into all the home’s I design,” Rohan notes. "Part of the aesthetic of eclectic design is that you can marry different design elements even if you are not sure they mix well. It takes the experience of a designer to do it successfully." Using their previous furnishings in new applications as well as mixing in new pieces, the owners of this classic Clayton residence were smart in their design. And after years of careful planning and construction, they couldn’t be more pleased with the final result. “This home truly exemplifies a successful collaboration between all parties,” the homeowner says. Spectacularly planted containers, a sparkling blue pool and a classic black-and-white color scheme combine in this lush Mediterranean-style landscape in Ladue.
Ten years ago, when they built their stately, brick, European-style home, the owners of this Ladue residence may not have moved heaven, but they certainly moved a lot of earth to do so. A backyard pool and a large space to entertain family and friends was a priority. “We had a long, sloping yard, and we had to push back a hillside to create a flat space,� the homeowner explains. While the effort may have been arduous, the effect is spectacular. A finely crafted, intricate stone retaining wall, constructed to hold back part of the earth, has morphed into a lengthy, spouting, three-part waterfall. From it, waves of water slide into the cool, cerulean-blue pool. The extensive use of lilac flagstone for the pool deck and surrounding patio adds to the serene, classic appearance of the setting. Moving all that earth did more than create a level place for the pool. As viewed from the balustrade-lined terrace off the main level of the house, the pool, patio and surrounding plantings appear to be an incredibly beautiful sunken garden. The stage is set on the fern-filled upper terrace itself. Black-wicker furniture, covered in black-and-white upholstery; black patio umbrellas, and bright-red pillows and accessories fill the space. From the terrace, a stately, curved staircase descends into a lush, Mediterranean-style courtyard reminiscent of Cannes and Monte Carlo. Classical, footed urns overflowing with tall palms inundate the space. Here, too, black furniture, this time in wrought-iron and softened by black-and-white cushions upholstered in a variety of stripes and prints, dot the area. Bright-red pillows and containers overflowing with red and white flowers provide a punch of color.

On the same level as the pool, a series of brick archways mark the entrance to a covered terrace, which provides a second area for entertaining, and leads into the lower level of the home. Like the other spaces, it echoes the black, white and red color scheme that unites the entire outdoor area. At the back of the covered terrace, wide French doors provide access to the house for guests who might want a respite from the sun or summer heat. The homeowners recently put the

finishing touches on that interior space, which includes a large comfortable seating area with a stone fireplace and huge, flat-screen TV; a vintage Brunswick billiard table from the 1920s; a walk-behind wet bar; a full kitchen, and a wine cellar. “My husband tells his friends that this is his wife’s idea of a man cave,” she says with a laugh. The black, white and red color scheme surrounding the pool and on the terraces is one the homeowners have maintained throughout the

years. “To me that’s classic,” she says. “No matter what trends are in or out, black and white is always good.” There is some permanent planting around the pool. A bed of perennial dianthus complements a series of lilacs near the house. Repeat-blooming Stella D’Oro daylilies top the fountain-filled retaining wall. Two Japanese maples mark the entrance to the lower terrace, and a living wall of evergreen viburnums helps screen the pool area from
neighbors. While that planting is lovely, it is the 16 palm-filled containers and baskets of ferns and flowers that set the stage and steal the show in this garden. The homeowners have transformed the use of containers into a highly skilled art. When she first began using palm-filled containers, it was an arduous cycle; buy small palms in the spring, haul them home, plant

both palms and flowers in the containers and toss out the frost-killed palms and flowers in the fall, she recounts. “I use 16 majesty palms. Replanting them every year was so labor intensive, plus they always started out small. One year I had enough. I got on the phone and started calling until I found Walter Knoll (Florists) who would pick them up in the fall, store them through the winter and bring them back in the spring.

“The cost of doing that, compared to buying everything new in the spring, is pretty much a wash, and they are tall and beautiful when they arrive back in May. All I have to do is plant flowers around them. They are in footed, lightweight, composite containers that I can move around by myself,” she explains. The multiple containers of ferns also are a movable feast for the eye. Day by day, they enhance the yard; when company comes, they go on

plant stands already positioned on the terraces. While the homeowners only have been in their current home for 10 years, many of the wicker furniture pieces are treasured friends from previous settings. “We’ve had some of the wicker furniture for 25 years,” she estimates. “I’ve looked for deals and collected it from various places. I’ve had replacement cushions made and resprayed it to keep it looking fresh."
Her knack for combining a variety of prints, accessories and both treasured and new furniture, she modestly calls “a hobby.” As to the stately home she also has decorated: “It’s my little dollhouse,” she says. See www.stlouishomesmag.com for more information.

The Lencastre family is of royal Portuguese lineage – descended from Antonio Pinot Garces Mandureira, who was named the First Barão da Varzea do Douro by Portugal’s Queen Maria II on July 16, 1846. The family’s royal residence is Vila Nova, near the town of Penafiel and close to the eastern border in Portugal’s Vinho Verde wine region – about a 30-minute drive east from Oporto. The land has been in the family since the 12th century, and the only remnant of that time is an ivy-covered stone tower, now totally surrounded by Vila Nova, that was built in the 1700s. Over the centuries, additions were made to the original Vila Nova, and it is now a sprawling grand home and filled with antique pieces, like a covered red-velvet “sedan” chair from the 1700s that graces the front room, that speak to the family’s history and heritage down through the centuries. Like most of the Portuguese villas of that time, it also boasts a highly decorated family chapel where the Catholic Lencastre family has worshiped since it was added to the house in the early 1800s. In the late 1970s, the family planted white grape vines over 29 acres,

mostly the native Portuguese varietals that are most often used in Vinho Verde wines – Loureiro, Arinto, Avesso and Trajudura – but they did not make wines under their own label. In 2003, Bernardo Lencastre, who will be the Fifth Baron in the family, took over the property with his siblings. Bernardo revitalized the vineyards and started making Vinho Verde under the Casa de Vila Nova label. He also spearheaded efforts to make Vila Nova the showplace it is today. Among the renovations, the tower was turned into the house’s kitchen, with modern appliances hidden away behind wooden cabinets that evoke what a Portuguese kitchen would have looked like in the late 1800s. Portuguese china, in a delicate blue floral pattern made especially for the family, fill the mid-19th century china cabinet, while silver serving platters with the Lencastre family crest are displayed on the mantel over the stone fireplace in the formal dining room. There is even an old-fashioned den, much as it was in the early 20th century when the Third Baron, Bernardo’s grandfather, lived there. His vast collection of hunting rifles fills the room.

With summertime here, the go-to wine in Portugal is Vinho Verde. Its light, crisp, somewhat mineral bouquet and palate, often exhibiting peach and orange flavors, is perfect to accompany the many dishes prepared with cod fish, which is a staple in this country with a long coast along the Atlantic Ocean. At Vila Nova, their longtime cook prepares Bacalhau Assado O Forno (cod, baked in the oven), with onions and garlic, served with roasted small potatoes and sautéed kale, which is another staple of Portuguese cuisine that predates by centuries the new-found popularity of this vitamin and antioxidant-rich vegetable. The Vinho Verde in the Casa de Vila Nova label, which is a blend of Loureiro, Azal and Avesso grapes, holds its own beautifully with this and many others of the seafood-based dishes served at Vila Nova, but it would be equally delicious with summer salads and various chicken recipes that find their way to U.S. tables during the hot summer months. Bacalhau Assado o Forno (cod, baked in the oven) Ingredients: 3 eggs, scrambled 2 pounds codfish, cut into chunks 3 onions, sliced into rings 1 clove garlic, smashed and pressed 1 cup extra-virgin olive oil ½ cup fine breadcrumbs Directions: Scramble the 3 eggs in a medium bowl. On a baking sheet, spread out the breadcrumbs. Dip the cod chunks into the egg and then coat with the breadcrumbs. Preheat the oven to 250 degrees. In an oven-proof baking dish, lay the onion rings to cover the bottom. Add the garlic. Place the cod chunks on top of the onions and garlic. Add the extra-virgin olive oil. Bake in preheated oven for approximately 45 minutes. Remove from heat and serve with small, oven-roasted potatoes and sautéed kale or spinach. STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM JUNE/JULY 2014

These Wildwood homeowners need not travel far to reach their own Outdoor Oasis. Meander back to Jim and Kristie Dean’s unparalleled pool, and you’ll find it’s perpetually island time, thanks to an endless amount of resort-inspired features granting the sort of serenity you’d (usually) be hard-pressed to find this side of the Equator. Lifestyles designer John M. Gergel of JMG Design calls it “upscale tropical” – the inspiration being “more British Colonial than Polynesian and tiki,” he says. It’s an elegance that suits the Deans' traditional Wildwood teardown resting on a plump 10 acres. “We wanted something natural because it is so natural out here,” explains Kristie Dean, who wasn’t content toting jars of seashells back from treasured family vacations in Turks and Cacaos and Barbados. When designing the backyard, the Deans incorporated smart tropical touches grounded in nature in order to really bring paradise home. It’s the landscape that steals the show. Gergel does the whole gamut,

but, he says, “specializes in unusual gardens.” It’s a specialty that came in handy when attempting a tropical garden in a Midwestern climate that sees sub-zero temperatures in winter months. “Obviously, we couldn’t use many true tropical plantings,” Gergel says. Instead of palms, he picked trees and shrubs that mirrored a lusher, jungle-like look. Wider-leafed English Sorrels, which grow well in Missouri but aren’t common, provide a sweeping, green canvas. Next, Gergel added flowering plants – hardy hibiscuses alongside lilies and other perennials – then augmented with annuals – mostly Mexican petunias and oleanders – for “a more true tropical flare,” he says. But, it’s container plants (tropical hibiscus, palms) that deliver resort chicness to River Town. Instead of mulch, which isn’t used much in the Caribbean, Gergel purchased natural stone from local vendors like Kirkwood Material Supply: fieldstone and tumbled river rock for larger features within the

landscape, flagstone for pathways. In fact, Baker Pool Construction’s Rob Warren only poured concrete where necessary. “Plants look a lot better than patio,” he says. A polished concrete slide offers another nature-inspired touch, and timeless Amini’s wrought iron is a welcome – and welcoming – addition. “Have you seen the waterfall?” asks Gergel. Rushing water coupled with a series of hidden fire pots create post-dusk drama meant to “echo a volcanic feel,” Gergel says. Pool lights give the Deans flexibility when creating evening ambience. “Not only does it change colors, but it also has color patterns so they can have a color show,” says Warren. The pool’s free-form kidney shape was driven by the need for accommodating various uses and an overarching goal of evoking nature – and also as the sun’s natural trajectory. “This shape made the most sense for optimizing light,” Gergel explains. Because this is primarily an
entertainment pool, Warren recommended a larger shell to accommodate poolside lounging and childhood play. “The benefit of a concrete pool versus fiberglass or vinyl,” Warren says, “Is that we aren’t limited to any templates.” Just beyond the pool you’ll stumble upon a covered patio cabana designed by DL Design encased with natural stone, enlivened by seashell tables and coral finishes. “There’s even one of those tropical banana fans with a little monkey on top,” Dean adds. While the Deans might not be able to spend every week of summer vacation in the tropics, they’ve succeeded in creating a personal escape that competes with the most lavish hotels and spas. A cozy pool house is the ultimate place for all-season entertaining. When a Town and Country couple purchased a teardown in 2005, they knew part of their rebuild would include an exquisite backyard landscape featuring a pool house for year-round entertaining. “We wanted a space where we could entertain outside of the home,” the homeowner explains. “Something intimate and cozy.” Working with Dick Busch Architects, the couple dreamt up an inviting pool house. Busch was able to translate the homeowners’ folder of ideas into a bonus space featuring an open living room, bathroom, kitchen and indoor/outdoor serving area. Rustic with French and cowboy flair, the pool house is the gathering place for summer evenings around the pool and even chilly winter dinner parties. Connected to the home by a covered walkway, the brick exterior seamlessly blends with the home. Inside the pool house, a reclaimed wood panel wall mixes with horns, hooves and hides. The homeowner wasn’t quite sure the

direction the interior design of the space would take, but after acquiring cabinets from a home built in the 1800s, as well as salvaged barn siding found in Cuba, MO, the style began to take shape. “I knew I was looking for something old,” the homeowner says of the kitchen cabinetry. The pool house kitchen is equipped with a refrigerator, dishwashers and a farmhouse sink, salvaged from the same home as the kitchen cabinetry. The custom concrete counters are stamped with deer-hoof prints for a unique, added touch. A small, sliding door can be lifted and closed to create a serving area to the outdoor pool patio. In the summer, the serving door is an easy way for the homeowners and guests to grab cold lemonade or a frosty beer. In the main living area, the stone fireplace and reclaimed wood mantel sit below a massive bull’s head. At 6’ tall, the bull’s head wasn’t something the homeowner anticipated in the space. “Initially, I didn’t want any animal heads mounted in the pool house,” she says. “But when I saw the bull I knew it was the perfect fit for above the mantel. It is the best part of the room.” Other stylish furnishings include a cowhide sofa, antique coffee and end tables and a comfy leather chair embellished with a horn

pattern on the sides and studded detailing. Behind the fireplace seating area, an antique game table belonging to the husband’s grandmother and set in front of the reclaimed wood wall is a sweet spot for a quick game of Scrabble when you need to get out of the summer’s heat. To enhance the rustic feel of the pool house, reclaimed wood was used for the trim around doors and windows. Additionally, the window and door frames were hand-scraped to match the texture of the wood. For additional seating, a beautiful, high-top table made of a vintage wine barrel from Napa Valley adds to the rustic, French charm. Two rustic, antler chandeliers light the main living area. The homeowner dressed each fixture by adding greenery, honeysuckle, hydrangea and hanging crystals for a whimsical, playful touch. French double doors open to the pool patio, making the room pleasant for year-round entertaining. In 1962, notable architect Gyo Obata, cofounder of HOK architectural firm, which was established in St. Louis, completed the design of the Priory Chapel in Creve Coeur. Two sets of thin concrete parabolic shells on two levels set in 20 identical bays taper toward the center of the circular plan, giving the chapel a distinctive flower-shaped appearance. Three symmetrical tiers of whitewashed concrete are filled with Kalwall,
a translucent fiberglass material, which appears black from the outside and has the transparency of alabaster on the inside. Obata limited the design to a few simple, but strong materials. Italian architect and engineer Pier Luigi Nervi consulted with Obata on the project, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in April 2012.

Often referred to as “The British Library of Secondhand Bookshops,” Barter Books houses a vast array of written works. Missouri native Mary Manley opened the bookshop in 1991, in partnership with her husband Stuart, with an idea based on the swap system. Customers can turn in old books for credit to purchase new. The store is located in Alnwick’s magnificent old Victorian railway

station that was designed by William Bell in 1887. Mary and Stuart have restored and enhanced many features of the original building. An old canopy outside has been re-exposed. The fireplaces have been put back in working order. In addition, a missing skylight has been glassed in, and rooms have been replastered and repainted. Over time, Mary and Stuart hope to restore the entire glass roof.

At just 140 square feet, Chris and Malissa Tack’s home in Snohomish, WA, might just be one of the tiniest out there. Built on top of a trailer, the home includes an office, kitchen, bathroom and sleeping loft. The couple focused on using natural materials and carefully planned every inch of the home’s design. With 10 windows and a large skylight, the home beams with natural light. Tongue-and-groove pine wood was used on the interior sidings and
walling. For insulation, sheep wool was placed between the double walling. The floor in the living room and kitchen is mounted with engineered bamboo flooring. Solar panels provide electricity. A sleeping loft on the second floor is cozy but not cramped because of the cathedral ceilings. Used as an office or quiet escape for the couple, the tiny home also doubles as a place for visiting guests.

Is it a classic or is it a craze?
For our JUNE/JULY issue, we asked local home and design professionals about Grassless Backyards. Utilizing stone, water features, gravel, plantings and more to create a lush landscape without grass cuts down on maintenance and mowing. Here is what they had to say…
classic “Grassless backyards have been around for quite awhile. We lived in Arizona, and most of the yards have no grass. The landscaping is done primarily with rock and other materials. I don't think it was ever a craze. There are even some places in California, such as Palm Springs, that do the same thing. It is cheaper in the long run, and the water bills wouldn't be as high, plus you aren't supposed to use as much water in the desert areas.” Nancy Minkus, An Eye for Color and Design. “CLASSIC. A backyard doesn't need grass to be beautiful, functional or inviting. Landscaping with plants, flowers, ground cover, stones, edging and walkways creates color, texture and focal points. Whether you are relaxing, barbecuing, entertaining or viewing your backyard through your living-room window, landscaping can be a serene picturesque view.” Pamela Calvert, Pamela Calvert Design. “I think it is going to be a ‘new classic.’ As people downsize and want to simplify their lifestyles, the less maintenance the better. Craze “Grassless backyards without plants were a craze. All rock, concrete designs went out of style once everyone realized they were downright ugly. For no mowing and little maintenance, try the shade lovers Packysandra, Hostas, ferns and Creeping Jenny. Easy-care selections for sunny areas can include the long-blooming Coreopsis and low spreading Catmint. Sedums are a top choice for exceptional texture and color along with low-water needs.” Ann Lapides, Sugar Creek Gardens.

“As a native St. Louisan, I'll be honest, I never have given much thought to grassless backyards. When I think of St. Louis springs and summers, I immediately picture lush green yards, bright, colorful flowers and the sprinklers going nonstop. It seems hard to imagine grassless yards becoming a staple here. I would have to say it's a trend- for now. However, I think the weather is the biggest determining factor of whether grassless yards, or Xeriscaping, will move from being a trend to becoming a necessity. If droughts become more frequent in the future, Xeriscaping would likely catch on here, in an effort to conserve water.” Emily Koch, JCR Design Group.
