Don’t Stand Still

Photography by Colin Miller/Strauss Peyton

When it comes to any aspect of home design, imagine if we weren’t constrained by what we did or how we did it. Imagine thinking imaginatively using new ideas instead of traditional or expected ideas. Looking for solutions from another perspective can open our eyes to new and out-of-the-ordinary possibilities, which is exactly what the talented winners of our 2014 Baths of the Year competition accomplished (page 26). For myself, I love being around unique people even if they don’t talk back, like the Tile Lady I ran into at Henry Kitchen & Bath! She is something that you would never think to find in a showroom, but by thinking differently, mixing it up and taking a chance, anyone can stand out and make a statement. Whether you are choosing tile for a new dress (haha) or selecting tile for a new or bath remodel, there is so much fun to be had. Fortunately, the diversity in tile is almost limitless from size to finish to ceramic to glass. No doubt you can go crazy. Whatever styles you are seeking, take a risk, stretch outside your comfort zone and get creative with the many tile combinations at your fingertips. Then move on to the plumbing and lighting choices! Stay cool… Suzie Osterloh Publisher/Owner

Living amongst aRt The St. Louis area arguably has one of the most substantial collections of venerable buildings of any large metropolitan area in the United States. The immense variety of architectural styles displayed by these older buildings in our vicinity enrich all our lives and the vitality of our city in so many ways. St. Louis has one of the most iconic and beautiful skylines of any American city. The Gateway Arch certainly separates our skyline from all others, but alluring skylines across the country are always punctuated by both old and new buildings. Older buildings display craftsmanship in their details that cannot be duplicated for any price we would ever be willing to pay. We have these buildings now. They are living examples of how our ordinary ancestors such as bricklayers and stone masons worked to create unique artwork every day of their working lives. The patience and creativity they put into each stone or brick enlightens us that work need not be useless drudgery. Just as when we take time to gaze at the stars, the grandeur of buildings of a former period can also be transformative. We transcend our everyday problems when we take the time to notice their beauty and detail. We are inspired by the care taken to create such extravagant or simple yet powerful forms. To live in an historic building, whether it be a single-family residence, or an older apartment building, or a large warehouse that has been thoughtfully converted to living space, is a wonderful way to experience works of art in our everyday life. To own and care for an older building is an honor. To live in one an adventure. St. Louis neighborhoods of an earlier time display diversity of architecture and particular details on each and every building. Any building is a solitary individual with their own traits and personality. Walking through these neighborhoods affords us the opportunity for day trips without ever leaving town. There is at all times some detail on an older building that we hadn’t noticed before. Faithfully caring for our elder neighborhoods and homes takes patience and thought but St. Louis is so culturally rich because we have. Old buildings stand as sentries guarding history and tell stories about that past. Stories help us pass our culture and values from generation to generation. Just as we would not be as culturally wealthy without a written language to document our past and the loss of written documents is guarded against in order that that history is complete, aged buildings replete the storyline of our region.

slhl STYLE MAKER

owner of

Philip Slein Gallery, displays beautiful artwork at his CWE gallery. He is sharing all you need to know about contemporary art.

SLHL: Should a piece of contemporary art be the focal point in a room? Why or why not? Philip: The art should always be the most important and expensive thing in the room. The best new trend in my opinion is for your home to be "collected" not decorated. Collected interiors are always far more interesting than a decorated one and much more of a personal reflection on you the individual. SLHL: How do you mix contemporary art with traditional artwork or furniture? Philip: Mixing contemporary and modern art with antiques is my favorite environment. As a species, we have been making wonderful things for thousands of years and the ability to mix them together can make a very powerful and dramatic statement. For example, in my loft I have a wonderful mid-century painting by Maurice Freedman hanging over a heavily carved and pierced Anglo Indian cabinet from 1870. The mix is unexpected and delightful. Don't be afraid to take chances or be daring with mixing things up, you can always move things back. Creating an exciting environment takes some experimentation and creativity, so have fun!

edited BY MELISSA MAUZY Photography BY Colin Miller/Strauss Peyton

Contemporar© Collection SLHL: What classifies art as “contemporary”? (Is it the colors? Styles? Etc.) Philip: Contemporary art is usually considered art that is created from 1960 to the present. Contemporary art is the art being made today in all styles, colors etc. Some contemporary art looks like older art, and some contemporary art looks like things we have never seen before. SLHL: What is typically the subject matter in contemporary art? Philip: Contemporary art of today has no limitations on subject matter. The art of today covers the wide range of topics as of anytime prior, nothing is off of the table! SLHL: How do you know a piece of contemporary art is “good art?” Philip: Sometimes you just know when you see it, but usually it takes years of study and looking at great art in museums etc. to hone your eye. This is why it's very important to do your homework, see gallery shows and work with a knowledgeable dealer.

20

SLHL: Are there certain frames that better complement contemporary artwork? Philip: Many contemporary painters do use frames and they don't need frames. However, some use simple frames with clean lines. That said, some artist put heavy gold frames on their work. There are no rules. If it works, it's good; if it doesn't, it's bad! SLHL: What advice would you give to a homeowner that is beginning to update their collection and in the past had mostly purchased traditional artwork, but wants to incorporate a more contemporary piece? Philip: Contemporary painting works wonderfully with antiques. It's a very hot look currently to mix periods. I would advise a client to bring one piece of contemporary art into a room and start slowly. Most galleries will let a client try a piece out in their home before purchase, which is something I highly recommend. At my gallery, I also happily give my design opinion! SLHL: What trends are you seeing in contemporary art? Philip: Abstract painting is hot and so is portrait painting. There are often multiple trends that are hot simultaneously, which is great for collectors because personal tastes can vary so much. I would encourage people to try and be as "broad base" as possible in their taste and constantly try to keep an open mind about contemporary art because there are amazing artists working in many different styles and you don't want to be closed off to anything or miss a rising star. FRACTAL forces

slhl ARTIST

Helene Slavin combines contemporary action painting and classicism, guided by the forces of fractal geometry.

By Samantha Hubbard Photography by Colin Miller/Strauss Peyton

22

Like so many ingenious ideas in this world, fractal painting originated by accident. Helene Slavin compares her discovery to the story of toasted ravioli in St. Louis, when ravioli pasta was mistakenly boiled in oil, creating the crunchy, browned noodle, at Angelo Oldani’s on the Hill in the 1950s. Slavin was mixing blue paint when it splattered. She noticed how the forces of nature spread it into a pattern of its own across the white lid of the paint can. “That changed my creative life, seeing that,” says Slavin about the formation that she would soon identify as a fractal, or a repeated pattern at varying degrees of magnification that was first defined in geometry by Benoit Mandelbrot in 1987. She experimented with her discovery by putting paint on the edges of a lid and observing it slide over the rim and down the side. It was then that she decided to try a completely new path and process with her painting. Using the basic forces of gravity, pressure, heat and friction, she departed from the landscapes and figurative pieces that encompassed her past works. Slavin created her first composition using her fractal painting process in 2010. Walter Metcalfe purchased Wilde Bloemen. “I wanted to create this beautiful negative and positive

AUGUST 2014 STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM

ARTIST_0814.indd 24

7/11/14 3:41:12 PM

composition, so I looked at a Rembrandt landscape, and I cut out the Rembrandt shape, and I threw the paint through the open shape,” Slavin says. Ever since then she has been exploring, studying and developing fractal geometry with acrylic paint. In her white-walled backyard studio, scattered with painting supplies and splatters, sits a composition she is working on for her upcoming show. Slavin began with a sketch of a tornado she had seen in a photograph and set up a base that was particularly shaped with bumps and indents for the fractals to follow and form on the Plexiglas. Then, she threw the paint, using a method that she prefers to keep secret. “Things are moving very quickly,” Slavin says. “The fractals are forming and I’m trying to catch up with them. I think of it as me channeling the forces of fractal geometry. They’re working through me.” Slavin sometimes incorporates painting tools such as combs and brushes to release fractal passages that have become too heavy. She guides her paintings with the abstract shapes of Rembrandt landscapes, having traveled to Paris and Holland on over 20 different occasions to study the Dutch masters of the Renaissance. “After visiting these Rembrandt’s and Vermeer’s for as many times as I have, they’ve very slowly unveiled some secrets to me,” she says. “And that has informed my color theory.” Her color theory focuses on a classical color palette. “I have a core color, which is this amazing gold, and it’s tied to all other colors that I use,” Slavin says. She ties complimentary colors to each other to make the color unified and luminous. Luminosity is something that Slavin has been uncovering and expanding in her works for her upcoming show at the Philip Slein Gallery. “As long as the paintings are luminous, they speak of references to nature because the contours of nature control fractals, both microscopically and macroscopically,” she says. “So, whether it be under a microscope, you can see fractals, and also, when you turn to the galaxy it’s all fractal. We are very much fractal, our brains, our circulatory systems, are entirely fractal.” To see the fractal formations in Slavin’s new compositions, visit her exhibit at the Philip Slein Gallery on Aug. 8. More than 250 square feet

marble masterpiece

This 270-square-foot master bathroom is lavish with a blend of marble coverings. As the bathroom is primarily covered in marble, coordinating each element was a challenge for designers at K-Build Design. It took approximately six months of searching suppliers and waiting for new marble lots to arrive and be approved to finalize all of the selections. But it was worth the wait! A total of 670 square feet of 18x18 Venatino marble tiles and hundreds of AKDO Carerra marble trim pieces were used and hand-selected to achieve a flawless image of grace and function. Your eye is drawn to the arched door casings that are detailed with keystones as well as the window casings, vanity tops and tub deck. The three slabs of Calcutta Oro add movement and interest. The weathered slate stain on the vanities provides a beautiful contrasting element to the marble and evokes balance and harmony. As you step into the double-entry shower, three insets draw your attention. Adorned with a mosaic overlay and a basket weave mosaic inside the inlays, the insets are the perfect place for storing shower essentials. To complete the elegant look, fine crystal detail on the plumbing and lighting fixtures create a beautiful illuminated radiance.

Why the judges love it:

The marble work in this bathroom is outstanding! The space is very symmetrical and balanced. The window in the shower provides needed natural light. Photography by Anne Matheis.

relaxing retreat

Choosing to make the shower and tub the focal point of their master bath, the homeowners of this 138-square-foot space were looking for a place to relax and retreat that was unique to their style and taste. Liston Construction created a custom space that was just what their clients were looking for. They faced the challenge of working with the existing windows and confines of the master bath footprint. Taking space from the large master bedroom and reworking the master closet, the toilet was able to be relocated, enclosing the water closet and incorporating the window that once was centered on their vanity. An oval freestanding tub and floor-mounted filler make a statement in front of the corner windows, and the curbless, tiled floor-to-ceiling shower was expanded. The shower creates a continuous and seamless look that draws your eye as you enter the bath. The porcelain floor tile sets the tone for the greige color palette combining the soft, muted shades of gray and beige. The muted palette in the tile is offset by the rich, merlot-and-black glazed inset cabinetry, which create a custom look. Finish details of the cabinetry are highlighted by the use of moldings and custom-framed mirrors. Interest is created by the use of different size tiles in the shower while keeping the overall feel of the space monochromatic and clean.

Why the judges love it:

The designer was smart in the use of floor space to include a good-sized shower and tub. The corner oval tub has a cool look and the natural light from the corner windows makes the space feel bright and open. This space has the right amount of open storage and a nice aesthetic. Dashing Design by Elizabeth Kavlok

Less than 125 square feet

bright, clean and simple

With their 30-year-old master bath in desperate need of an update, these homeowners turned to Elizabeth Kavlok, Dashing Design, to bring the 116-square-foot space into the modern world. First on the agenda was relocating the toilet and bidet, which were both seen from the entrance to the bath. By mirroring their location, the toilet and bidet are now out of sight from most any angle when viewing the bath and are in their own roomy, private niche. The homeowners also chose to remove the tub, as other bathrooms in the home have the option of a tub. The focus then turned to the shower. The open shower is surrounded by glass with sandblasted panels for tasteful privacy. Entry into the shower is easy with zero transition, and hooks for towels and robes make it practical. Metal strips jazz up the length of the shower, while a mother-of-pearl decorative tile adds interest on the plumbing wall and continues into the shower niche. The oval shower seat drove the all-around design of the master bath. Because the tub was removed, Kavlok needed to come up with a replacement seating area for her client to sit and brush her teeth in the morning. The multifunctional seat extends into the shower area. The seat’s design defies much of the rest of the bath’s design by introducing a completely curved element to the otherwise straight-line driven design. The vanity counsel is the ultimate his-and-hers setup. Each has their own large and tall linen cabinet with a pull-out hamper. A light, airy feel was achieved with the built-in vanity counsel by opening up the area below the Kohler sinks. Tones of white and gray give this functional and attractive master bath a bright, clean and simple look.

Why the judges love it:

This master bath was extremely well thought out. The shower seat is outstanding. While the majority of the space is very linear, the little bit of round in the seat brings in a nice contrast. Photography by Switzer Film.

serenity spa

The owners of this single-story contemporary home were seeking a private oasis in their master bath. Mitchell Wall Architecture + Design redesigned the existing space and added an additional 400 square feet to create a serene and luxurious master bathroom. With their spectacular pool and landscaped garden just steps outside of the master bath, the homeowners knew they had to take advantage of their backyard getaway just feet away. The soaking tub provides lovely views to their garden. Pebbles inlaid into the stone floor mimic and repeat the pebbles leading to the swimming pool. Mitchell Wall kept the color palette neutral and used timeless materials such as honed travertine stone finishes. The his-and-hers floating vanities are across from one another, which allow for different height requirements. Down the hall and out of view are separate closets, a vanity area for makeup and a gorgeous shower room. With a picturesque view and soothing bath, the homeowners never want to leave their bathroom retreat.

Why the judges love it:

The floor plan in this master bath is great. Offsetting the vanity/sink location was a smart choice. The low wall near the soaking tub allows abundant amounts of natural light to spill over the partition. Photography by Alise O’Brien.

elegant escape

Soothing, tranquil and elegant perfectly describe this 144-square-foot master bath. Going for a modern take on vintage, the homeowner, along with Mitchell Wall Architecture + Design, created the ultimate oasis. After falling in love with the Waterworks bathtub, it became the focal point of the room and the basis for many of the design decisions. The curvature of the tub is replicated in all aspects of the bathroom including the cabinetry, tile and cabinetry hardware. The marble tile inset repeats the curved design. After the design on the floor was laid, there was leftover tile. On a whim, the homeowner came up with the idea to use the tile at the surrounding base of the shower. The minty-green cabinetry is a shaker style, but the overlay on top is curved to mimic the tub and add a more modern touch. For a soothing effect, the walls are painted a soft mint that becomes a neutral without being too overwhelming. The showpiece of the master bath is the collection of original Marcel Vertes watercolors the homeowner had framed in multiples. The paintings are a series of nine dancers, and again, the movement in the piece reflects the curvature in the tub.

Why the judges love it:

This master bath really achieves the look of old Charleston with its soft and elegant aesthetic. What great tile work! The way the tile radius matches the tub radius is well thought out and brilliant. Photography by Alise O’Brien.

modern elegance

Achieving balance in a small space was the challenge for this 50-square-foot bathroom by Herzog Kitchen & Bath. To give the appearance of more space, 12” x 24” marble tile was used in the shower as well as the clear, frameless, 3/8” thick glass shower enclosure. The intricate tile work makes the bathroom unique. Marble, mosaic glass and natural stone blend together seamlessly and coordinate with the marble vanity top. Warm taupe tones and soft white Kohler fixtures give the space a comfortable yet modern flare. Modern, brushed nickel fixtures complement the other design elements.

Why the judges love it: This bathroom looks bigger than 50 square feet, so the designers were successful in opening up the space. The tone-on-tone tile gives the space a three-dimensional look. Very inspiring for a smaller bath. Photography by Bolla Photography. STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM AUGUST 2011

A refreshing approach to

Inspired by nature, designer Megan Clinton encourages clients to express their individuality.

By Barb Wilson Photography by Anne Matheis

Opposite page: Table settings in the formal dining room emphasize a variety of textures and elements drawn from nature. This page: Reflected in the dining room’s antique-mirrored wall, an ornate walnut-&-burlwood sideboard is uniquely juxtaposed with an 8-foot steel panel by pop artist David Buckingham.

Megan Clinton is many things…a uniquely creative and resourceful designer; a Master Gardener; a devoted wife and mom to three preteen boys; a frequent hostess, known for her “fun bashes”; and quite possibly the least pretentious design professional you’ll ever encounter. Fulfilling a lifelong passion, Megan launched her 15-year career by apprenticing with designer Gail Rowland, then struck out on her own as MC Design. Resistant to faddish trends and clichés, she puts her clients at ease, encouraging them to “be true to yourself, and make it a journey. A little light-heartedness and whimsy are perfectly acceptable. Fine antiques and great art don’t necessarily say it all, but good design is attainable by all.” The Clintons’ personal residence in Clayton is clear evidence of Megan’s philosophy. Having outgrown their previous home in Kirkwood, she and husband Brian purchased this stunning European-styled two-story nearly three years ago while it was still under construction. Richly clad in brick and stone, the home has a finished lower level and plenty of space for the boys to “hang out.” Relaxing in the outdoor hearth room over glasses of cardamom ice tea and homemade plum tart, Megan recalls, “The asymmetrical features of this house spoke to me, and the timing was right because we wanted to finish the interior ourselves.” She gestures to the immaculately groomed courtyard and covered casual dining area that connects the house and detached 3-car garage, adding, “I’m a very tactile person. I love texture and a natural, uncontrived look. When it comes to color, proportion, scale and negative space, Mother Nature gives us the cues.” In fact, every plant in this exquisite outdoor space was specifically chosen for its texture and color – an astonishing variety that ranges from false yew, espalier magnolia, wisteria and dwarf oakleaf hydrangea to black mondo grass bordering the courtyard’s crushed gravel surface. Moving indoors, the tour begins in the foyer, which showcases a Gothic-arched entry door, onion-shaped STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM

chandelier and an Italian bent glass étagère. French doors open to the formal dining room where, as in most rooms of the home, each piece has a story. A ‘50s-vintage Venini blown glass chandelier is suspended from the diagonally coffered ceiling. Antiqued mirrors blanket one wall, and the remaining walls are a deep chocolate hue, lacquered for a reflective quality. Purchased at an estate sale, the walnut-and-burlwood sideboard and dining table were originally a matched set, but the sideboard was refinished and glazed for an antique, patinaed look. French-style

leather dining chairs from Louis J. Solomon surround the table. Much of the home’s artwork comes from the William Shearburn Gallery and represents anniversary gifts from Brian to Megan. Above the sideboard is his most recent gift, an eight-foot welded steel panel by pop artist David Buckingham that reads, “Me Love You Long Time.” Directly across the foyer, the two-story fireside sitting room is fairly formal, but has a soothing ambience and is used regularly. Megan’s objective for the décor was “classic, yet cool,” and she chose a palette of silvery blues with gold overtones and silver highlights, upholstering

the walls below the chair rail in a Scalamandre fabric that establishes the color scheme. Proving that “formal” can also be “whimsical,” the space is filled with an intriguing assortment of furnishings, most notably a comfortable chocolate-colored mohair sofa and yak hide footstool, a ceiling medallion from a Chicago cathedral over the fireplace, ginger jars on the mantel, a Shaker rocker in lizard-patterned leather, an acrylic glass-topped table, a Don Wiegand bronze “Madonna” (8th anniversary gift) and a Turkish ottoman. Drapes in a gold silk Schumacher fabric are

backed by sheers from the couple’s former home. The formal living room overlooks the outdoor hearth room, and Megan notes that her design concept was inspired by the gold starburst chandelier. Reupholstered in gold silk velvet, the walnut-backed sofa came from their previous home. The walnut is repeated on the fireplace paneling, which displays “Calla Lily,” a Tom Baril photogravure on paper and Brian’s first-anniversary gift to Megan, who carried a bridal bouquet of calla lilies. Complementing the main seating area are an Amy Howard antique-mirrored coffee table, antique side chairs and a 1970s floor STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM

Other special favorites in the living room are a kidney-shaped ottoman “rescued from curbside and given new life” with an Osborne & Little fabric, a burlwood secretary that was a housewarming gift from Brian’s mother, and a 12th-anniversary gift, Richard Estes’ 110-layer silkscreen titled “Kentucky Fried Chicken.” Now an investor, Brian was formerly a restaurateur and the kitchen is as much his domain as Megan’s. Fully open to the coffered breakfast/family area, the kitchen features a large island topped with honed marble,

Adjoining the kitchen is a butler’s pantry with a Carrara marble countertop, mother-of-pearl backsplash and cabinets by Robin Bretz, currently co-owner of The Jeweled Cottage, that are backed with iridescent mirrors. wood bench and lit by an artistic metal chandelier from Julie Neill Designs in New Orleans. Beyond the dining area is a sun-splashed sitting area, wallpapered in a horizontal “beadboard” pattern and furnished with a linen-upholstered sofa, faux tortoiseshell floor lamp, a wingback chair and a British Colonial leather chair, mirrored walnut side table, and a gilt wall mirror. “It’s the symbiotic relationship of these diverse elements that make the room work,” Megan explains. The tour concludes in the main-floor master suite, which is dominated by a Louis J. Solomon bed in walnut, with nail head-trimmed, ivory-leather

head and footboards. Accent pieces include elegant bamboo chairs in a Scalamandre fabric; a ‘70s-vintage mirror in a goatskin-finished frame; a tub chair, inherited from Megan’s mother and reupholstered in a bold stripe and a handsomely carved highboy. Delighted by texture, color, nature, and the pleasure of giving salvaged furniture new life, Megan’s styling reflects her irrepressible joie de vivre and free-spirited approach to design. Perhaps Brian describes her best when he says, “Some people visit beautiful places; other people make places beautiful.” See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources. STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM

Garden for Guests

Blending a variety of characteristics makes this garden paradise perfect for family and friends.

Big pops of color, easy maintenance, while also comfortable and relaxing…could all three of these goals be combined in one landscape? When they moved into their brand new home in Wildwood 15 years ago, these homeowners hoped they weren’t asking for the impossible. They had just purchased three acres of property, and they needed to be practical. With four children under the age of 10, they knew they had no time to manicure a landscape. Yet, this was their “forever” home. They wanted it, and the grounds around it, to be inviting; a place where their family and friends wanted to come and relax. Even more, as the children grew up, the couple wanted their home to be a gathering place for their children and their children’s friends.

To accomplish this seemingly impossible task they turned to Chris Passiglia, whose family has been in the nursery/landscaping business since 1950, first on Broadway in the city of St. Louis and more recently in west St. Louis County. Together with Chris, they began slowly, first simply landscaping the area at the front of the traditional, European, two-story house with its brick and stone facade. Three years later, they added a swimming pool, waterfall and hot tub in the back yard. Five years ago, working with Chris and Passiglia’s Nursery garden designer Christine Knoernschild, they finished the patio area by adding an outdoor fireplace. A majestic line of evergreens also was planted along the perimeter of the STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM AUGUST 2014

7/14/14 11:40:55 AM

Working with Chris Passiglia, whose family has been in the landscaping business for over 60 years, the couple planned their planting and hardscape over the past 15 with the emphasis on selecting trees and shrubs with color in mind. Beginning at the front of the three-acre property, the couple added the pool and hot tub 12 years ago. The outdoor fireplace and surrounding patio are the most recent additions to the property. Favorite shrubs include Japanese maples with red foliage and evergreens with either a gold or blue gray cast. Bright red mandevilla vines in pots accent many spaces.

woods at the back of the property. “There’s a wonderful flow from the pool to the hot tub to the fireplace,” the homeowner notes. From the very beginning of the project, Chris and the homeowners looked to trees and shrubs to make the garden magic happen. They spent hours walking though the nursery, discussing plants and picking out favorites. Ultimately, they selected conifers with strong blue-green or yellow-green needles and interesting sculptural forms. Silvery "Blue Atlas" cedars and golden yellow "Skylands" spruces are two favorites. Tapping into the wealth of exciting plants that hybridizers are constantly turning out, Chris and the homeowners opted for variegated

46

boxwoods and hollies rather than those with solid green leaves. Japanese maples with either strong red or yellow-green foliage helped anchor the landscape. Two standouts are "Crimson Queen" with a weeping habit and vibrant red color and sculptural "Viridis," with lacy foliage that emerges as a light orange, turns vibrant green as summer progresses and finishes off in fall as a dark red. For even more “wow” factor, they tapped into new versions of standard plants that have interesting leaf color as an added bonus. Rather than an ordinary redbud, they selected "Rising Sun," a stunning new variety featuring bright apricot to yellow leaves at the tip of every branch.

AUGUST 2014 STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM

OUTDOOR_0814.indd 46

7/14/14 11:41:42 AM

Rather than the common white-flowered, spring-blooming deutzia, they opted for deutzia "Chardonnay Pearls" with golden foliage that simply glows when backed by a large blue spruce. Bloom-A-Thon azaleas that bloom in spring and repeatedly flower in summer and fall provide almost continual impact. Even perennials pop with colored leaves. Heuchera "Plumb Pudding," as purple as the name implies, is planted near Heurchera "Caramel" with apricot-colored foliage. Long-blooming knautia, "Thunder and Lightning" with nodding, red violet flowers features soft-green leaves edged in white.

While an innovative and knowledgeable selection of trees and shrubs is a great way to cut down on garden maintenance, it does not eliminate all upkeep, particularly with the tricks that weather can play. This past winter weather was a case in point. Like many St. Louisans, these homeowners lost plants, most likely due to the continued duration of the cold. Particularly hard hit were plants that are marginal in this geographic region, such as crape myrtle, and broadleaf evergreens, including boxwoods, hollies and rhododendrons. Should this next winter turn out to be as severe as the winter of 2013/14, there are steps that homeowners can take to protect STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM AUGUST 2014

A butterfly perches on a blue-gray stone and blends perfectly with the weeping 'Blue Atlas' cedar, gold 'Tiger Eye' sumac and fern-like astilbe with its bright purple flowers. Annuals with bright foliage such as purple-leaved Rex begonias and coleus also play an important part in the landscape.

plants, particularly newly planted shrubs, Chris notes. In addition to planting shrubs such as crape myrtle in protected areas, homeowners can also spray the leaves of boxwood, hollies and rhododendrons with an anti-dessicant such as Wilt Pruf in late fall and again over the winter. Evergreen foliage continues to lose moisture even when frozen. Anti-dessicants slow the release of moisture and help the plants survive. While all gardens require some care, this lower maintenance landscape has allowed the homeowners to open their home as a gathering place while their children grew up. “All of our kids were

48

swimmers, and we had before-meet pasta parties, after-state parties and graduation parties,” the homeowner recalls. Now that their children have grown up, the tradition continues. “This year, the night after our youngest came home from college for the summer, I looked out the window at 10:30 p.m. and saw a parade of headlights coming up the street,” she says, delighted that their home is still a gathering place. With two of their children now engaged to be married, the homeowners are planning even more future family celebrations. See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

Container Combos Dress up your deck or patio with colorful container plantings. Containers allow you to mix and match varietals while also being able to move the container to any desired location. Local landscapers share their favorite container combos. By Melissa Mauzy

“For an easy combination that creates a delightful cottage-garden look, we mix pink Petunias, yellow Millionbells and blue Lobelia. Having been bred to take the heat and humidity and to be self cleaning, these beauties always look fresh.” Ann Lapides, Sugar Creek Gardens.

“In this raised planting bed, we incorporated some of my favorite annuals/tropicals for a great pop of color and numerous contrasting textures. Included from rear to front are pink Mandevilla, pink Hibiscus, purple Fountain Grasses, Dragon Wing Begonia, Evita Rose Lantana, purple Scaevola and Silver Falls Dichondra (trailing). Any combination of these will make for a great container planting. As with all annuals/tropicals, daily watering is a must.” Brian Haley, Green Guys.

52

“One of my favorite combinations that does well through the summer months is Mandevilla with strawberry sizzle geranium and euphorbia, plus a splash of scaevola, a grass for texture and potato vine spilling over the edge. I like to top it off with the backdrop of the banana tree with its large foliage.” Jim Graeler, Chesterfield Valley Nursery.

“For spectacular summer color, my favorite planter combination is Diplidenia, Lantana and Scaevola with a fun, tall-foliage plant for center height. Dead-heading is unnecessary with this trio making it an easy choice for long-lasting blooming color. Lantana and Diplidenia come in various colors to suit your theme of either hot summer colors or soft and pretty pastels. Diplidenia and Lantana are also great deer-resistant selections. Plant this trio in full sun.” Christine Knoernschild, Passiglia’s Nursery & Garden Center.

"A moss hanging basket container filled with trailing golden Lysimachia Aurea, New Guinea Sun Impatiens and purple Moses in a Boat are easy to care for and provide great color all summer long.” David Sherwood, Sherwood’s Forest.

Summer Whites from

Red Wine Country

Sierra de Cantabria Mountains. istock photo By Lorraine Raguseo Photography courtesy of Quintessential Wines

Spain is hot, especially in August! Like St. Louis, temperatures can rise as high as 100 degrees. Despite the heat, Spain is best known for the production of red wines, largely because of the hardy Tempranillo grape, which is widely planted all over the country and used in the vast majority of Spanish red wines. In the past few years, there has been a growing awareness and appreciation of the aromatic and “food-friendly” white wines produced in Spain from grapes with names like Viura (also known as Macabeo), Verdejo, Parellada and Xarel-lo (pronounced “shar-lo”). While they are not exactly common white grape names that American consumers are used to seeing, these grapes are well worth seeking out for their compatibility with many summer dishes and how affordable they generally are. Viura, as it is known in Spain’s famed Rioja region (where it makes up 90 percent of the region’s white wine production and is the most popular grape in Northern Spain), is a hearty variety that grows very well in hot and dry regions and buds late, which makes it less likely to be harmed by frost. Viura wines from Rioja are characterized by bright citrus and tropical fruit flavors, softened slightly by white flower notes,

54

but with higher acidity than the examples from other parts of Spain. Balance and freshness are noticeable in the best Viura wines, such as wines from the Rioja Alavesa, the subregion just north of the Ebro River, with vineyards dotting the foothills of the Sierra de Cantabria Mountains. Bodegas Muriel Blanco, which is 100 percent Viura, is a great example of the white wines coming from Rioja Alavesa, at less than $15. In other parts of Spain, the same grape is called Macabeo, which is actually the original ancient Moorish name for this versatile, Spanish native grape. In the arid La Mancha region (the largest grape-growing region in the world, where one of the world’s most famous fictional characters, Don Quixote, “did battle” with the region’s ubiquitous windmills), the grape takes on even more citrusy flavors, making the wines ideal for shellfish dishes, such as a mango-laced cold shrimp salad or Gambas a la Plancha (pan-grilled shrimp). The Verdejo grape originated in North Africa and was brought to Spain around the 11th century, migrating northward to regions like Rueda and La Tierra de Castilla, in the aforementioned La Mancha region. In these regions, the Verdejo grape often is harvested at night, going into the wineries at much lower temperatures than during the daytime

Mango, Avocado Shrimp Salad (Serves 6) Ingredients: dressing 3 tablespoons fresh lime juice 2 tablespoons canola oil 1 tablespoon sugar salad 2 large firm-ripe mangoes, peeled, seeded and cut into 3/4 inch cubes (2 lbs. total) 2 medium firm-ripe avocados, peeled, seeded, and cut into 3/4 inch cubes (1 lb. total) 2/3 cup thinly sliced green onion 2/3 cup chopped cilantro leaf 1 tablespoon minced fresh hot chili pepper (or 1/2 tsp. dried red chili flakes) 1 lb. peeled, cooked small shrimp, chopped Directions: 1. Whisk together all dressing ingredients in a large bowl. 2. Add all salad ingredients and gently toss to combine. 3. Serve immediately, or cover and chill up to 1 hour.

when temperatures in September’s harvest season are still hovering around 90 to 100 degrees. This way, the winemakers can keep oxidation (or browning) of the juice to a minimum, and the resultant wine is full-bodied, yet soft. Verdejo has a distinctive nose, redolent of fennel and sagebrush, often blending with tropical fruit and citrus flavors, as well as a slight bitterness that is also characteristic of the grape. At about $10, the Real Compania label has both a Macebeo (in its Blanco wine) and Verdejo from Spain’s North Central plains. Just south of Barcelona, in Penedes on Spain’s east coast, Macabeo is blended with other native Spanish grapes Parellada and Xarel-lo to make Spain’s great sparkling wines, known as Cava. They are made in what is known as “method traditional,” going through a second fermentation to make the bubbles exactly in the same way that France’s Champagnes are created. They are the perfect sipping wines to cool things down on a hot summer day and work extremely well with all kinds of foods, especially those with a bit of

spice. Cava, most of which is in the Brut category, costs around $20. You cannot go wrong with any from the DO (Denominacion de Origin) of Penedes. Vallformosa Origen Brut Cava comes from a family whose roots in Spanish wine go back to the 1860s, not long after the first Cava was produced. A great twist on the traditional cocktail party, especially during a sultry summer, is tapas and Spanish whites. Serve myriad Spanish finger foods like foie toast with jamon Iberico (the extraordinary ham of the Iberico region is now available in many U.S. gourmet shops and through the internet) or spiced clams (with Arabic spicing to create a hot sauce), alongside chilled bottles of the above Spanish whites. Sit back and enjoy watching your guests’ pleasure in discovering their new favorite white wines. See www.stlouishomesmag.com for more recipes.

Sensible

Strategy A wet area solves two challenges in a St. Louis Hills master bathroom. By Melissa Mauzy Photography by Anne Matheis

BEFORE

As many homeowners gracefully age, their focus begins to turn from their current living situation to where they will live in the later years of their lives. For many, staying in their own homes is important. The ability to “age in place and enjoy the comforts of their surroundings has many homeowners rethinking the current state of their homes and making modifications to accommodate life changes in the future so that they can live independently in their own home and community. One such homeowner is Marcia Daab. After years of living in Arnold, she yearned to live in the city, where she would be close to parks, downtown, restaurants and more. When she found the perfect ranch in the St. Louis Hills neighborhood, she, along with her brother Rick Daab and his friend Danny Daenzer, rehabbed the home to accommodate her needs as she grows older. Modifications included widening doorways, updating

the kitchen and completely renovating her 80-square-foot master bathroom. Not just small, but also outdated, the previous master bathroom could be summed up as pink! A corner pink tub, pink sink and pink toilet were removed, and the bath was gutted to the studs. With a fresh palette to work with, Marcia called in experienced architect and friend Donna Boxx, Donna F. Boxx Architect, to help her configure her new retreat. “My goal was to create a bathroom that would be large and accessible enough to accommodate a wheelchair if need be,” Marcia explains. She presented Donna with her list of “wants” for her new master bath, which included a tub, shower, vanity, toilet and linen closet. “I think I said, ‘All in this space?’” Boxx laughs. To maximize space while including all of Marcia’s requirements, she created a wet area from the tub to the shower, which allowed her to pull the two functions into a smaller space. “I really tried to include all the basics,” Boxx explains. “The only way to do a tub was for it to be freestanding because building it in would look too bulky.” The tub/shower combo with a low-profile entry is enclosed behind floor-to-ceiling glass from Kirkwood Glass, which keeps the space feeling open while also keeping all of the water contained in one area. Instead of a regular, freestanding tub, Marcia went with a walk-in tub from Henry Kitchen & Bath that is not only easy to get in and out, but is also a bit smaller than a standard tub. The original glass-block window with stained-glass insert had to be raised in order for the tub to fit under the sill. A furniture-style vanity from Modern Kitchens & Baths is stained dark to contrast with the white and gray tile. Marcia chose gray as a neutral base so that she can change out the towels, accessories and wall color over time. Minimalist and classic, Marcia’s new master bath will be a serene retreat for years to come. Smart design has proven that age doesn’t have to hinder your ability to live where you love in style. “It is possible to have the beauty of the things we love with the accessibility of aging in place,” Boxx says. under-feet Heat By Sara Graham

Turn cold into cozy with the easy installation of a DITRA-HEAT flooring system. Photography courtesy of Schluter Systems. Radiant-heat flooring is rapidly becoming a popular choice for home remodelers. When compared with a traditional forced-air system, it requires no visible heating units and distributes heat evenly, all while being quieter and often more energy efficient. Radiant heat is not new technology. Radiators filled with heated water have been used to heat buildings for more than a century. Moving the heating element to the floor is even more efficient because the warm air rises naturally and circulates throughout a room due to convection. For homes already equipped with forced-air heating, a supplementary electric radiant floor is a more economical solution than installing a whole-house hydro-radiant system, especially when heating small spaces such as a bathroom or bedroom. The DITRA-HEAT system by Schluter Systems uses an uncoupled plastic and fabric “waffled” membrane instead of sand and cement or concrete board, which effectively separates the floor from the structure, allowing independent movement between the substrate and the floor. This prevents stress on the tile and eliminates any chance of cracking. It

64

also produces a much lighter load for a housing structure and is the lightest underlayment in the industry at 2 ounces per square foot. Since the tile is installed directly over wiring, heat transfer is maximized and installation is quick and simple. The wire is installed directly into a channel in the middle of the membrane, affording precise fitting and providing structural warranty. This also offers a high degree of control over how much space is heated by creating customized heating zones. A programmable, digital thermostat controls the temperature. The DITRA-HEAT system is also waterproof, allowing worry-free installation in showers, bathrooms and kitchens. “The experience of heated tile is similar to that of heated seats in a car,” says Mitch Tully with Trends in Tile. “Before you try them, it's a luxury you’ve likely never considered, but once you’ve tried them, you'll never give them up.” The DITRA-HEAT system can be found locally at Sunderland Brothers Company, Henry Kitchen & Bath and Trends in Tile. Places to go, things to do and see, and people who are leaving their mark on the world of style. By Samantha Hubbard

Old Post Office Plaza, St. Louis, MO Photography by Sam Fentress

The winning entry of the invited architectural competition for the renovation of Old Post Office Plaza channels Daedalus, a figure in Grecian mythology who is known for morphing public space and art into one, in its design concept. From elevated positions on ramps and platforms, the design is seen as an artistic composition, but once inside the plaza, guests actively become a part of the piece by utilizing the public space. A perforated stainless steel screen shades the cascade while functioning as a surface for projections. Daedalus, as the myth goes, built the Labyrinth of Knossos for the Cretan Minotaur to get lost in. A maze-like design represents the story, laden with American Beech trees and filled with a multitude of benches, stretches across the square. Igor Mitoraj’s sculpture of Daedalus’ son, “Torso di Ikaro,” or the torso of Icarus, blends into an extensive water feature. Architect Barry Sampson with Baird Sampson Neuert Architects transformed the once parking lot with the help of project coordinator Mauro Carreño, Blackwell Bowick Partnership Ltd., Optimal Engineering Solutions Inc., EDM Incorporated, Arcturis Quantity, Vermeulens Cost Consultants, Kozeny-Wagner, Inc. and Water Architecture.

U.K. Pavilion, Shanghai Expo 2010, China Photography by Iwan Baan

Heatherwick Studio designed the U.K. Pavilion that would represent the country among more than 200 others in the 2010 World Expo, located in Shanghai, China. Named the Seed Cathedral, 60,000 identical 7.5-meters-long rods of clear acrylic burst outward to create a box spanning 15 meters high and 10 meters tall. A total of 250,000 seeds were implanted into the tips of the rods. The purpose was to follow a theme of nature and cities, with the building branching out to merge as one with the sky and the

66

seeds symbolizing the potential and promise of the future. A large carpeting of silvery-gray Astroturf sat underneath the pavilion, angled into a form resembling wrapping paper as a sign that the building was a gift to China from the U.K. Troika designed a series of artistic installations for the landscape’s ramps into the pavilion, while structural engineer Adams Kara Taylor helped with the pavilion’s geometrical setup.

The Battery, San Francisco, CA Photography by David + Esther

The three-story Musto building, which once housed a candy store and a crating company, now provides San Francisco’s inquisitive intellectuals with an exclusive experience in the financial district’s Jackson Square. Michael and Xochi Birch dreamt of a members-only club comprised of a diverse group of bright minds. They purchased and renovated the historic 1907 building, originally designed by architect William Mooser II, turning their dreams of the club into reality. BCCI Construction Company led the renovation with FME Architecture

and Design, interior architect Ken Fulk, structural engineer Holmes Culley and landscape architect MPA Design. The 57,000-square-foot building needed mandatory seismic upgrades and restoration work that required a skillful overcoming of numerous design and technical barriers. Expansions, including the addition of a glass-enclosed fourth-floor penthouse, provided approximately 16,000 square feet of more usable space. The club contains numerous bars, hospitality suites and conference facilities, as well as a library, restaurant, pool, spa and gym. STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM AUGUST 2014

Precision Wood Restoration

855-367-7967 www.precisionwoodrestoration.com A precision repair is a virtually invisible fix of a damaged spot that leaves the rest of the piece undisturbed. Often, damage to fine furniture is limited to one or two small sites on the piece. Less sophisticated methods strip the entire piece, destroying the patina that makes heirloom furniture so beautiful. PWR combines traditional methods of craftsmanship with the latest in modern materials to repair only the spot that is damaged. Precision repairs also can be performed on doors, windows and architectural molding and woodwork. Such repairs restore the beauty of the wood without the time and expense associated with more common removal and replacement.

Is it a classic or is it a craze?

For our AUGUST issue, we asked local home and design professionals about wall-mounted faucets. Here is what they had to say…

classic “Anything that can solve a problem can have staying power. Wall-mounted faucets always work well in a tight space when a vanity has to be less than the standard 21 inches deep, or when a freestanding bathtub has to be placed against a wall. It is not always feasible to do a wall-mounted faucet for budget or structural reasons, so they are not ubiquitous and are a special and unexpected element in a space. My bet is they will remain a popular option, but appear in new styles and applications.” Dana King, Next Project Studio. “CLASSIC. They create more room in a small sink area. In a larger vanity area, they keep the sink area less cluttered. Wall-mounted faucets are a great application for vessel bowls and add an artistic look for any vanity or tub.” Pamela Calvert, Pamela Calvert Design. “Wall-mounted faucets are classic! They have been around longer than countertop-mounted faucets. Think of faucets on those big, old wall-mounted kitchen sinks with built-in drain boards and claw-foot tubs with faucets attached to the inside walls of the basin. They're very practical – drips drop into the basin!” Chris Berry, brooksBerry Kitchens and Baths. “To me they are a classic! The first indoor plumbing was basically a utilitarian faucet attached to a pipe inside (or even outside of ) the wall. I see this movement as an artistic reinterpretation of going back to those humble beginnings. Their popularity may wax and wane, but I think there always will be a need to get the faucet up and off the counter, such as in a small bathroom, or for an odd-height vessel bowl.” Cindy Kistner, G. M. Doveikis and Associates, Inc.

“Wall-mounted faucets – a design that works for both kitchen and bath – are going to be around for quite a while. When in the bath, a wall-mounted faucet becomes a striking piece of art above a beautiful vessel bowl. I think the option to create stunning rooms with these faucets will be around for many years to come.” Laureen Wilder, Laureen Wilder Designs, LLC. “I think this idea is a classic! In fact, the old cast-iron tubs all had this type of installation. Also, they are much easier to keep clean.” Jeannie Brendel, Brendel Architects. “I believe that a wall-mounted faucet is a classic for the contemporary and transitional home. It is a streamlined fixture that accompanies a streamlined bath. When I design a contemporary bathroom, I tend to use simple, straight-lined cabinetry; neutral tile, and a shower with a solid glass door without metal trim. A wall-mounted faucet fixture works perfectly with this style of bathroom.” Tom Manche, Tom Manche Interiors. “I think wall-mounted faucets are here to stay. They are a great way to make a design statement in a bath and are great in compact spaces where there might not be enough depth on a vanity. As with most things, what will make this a classic vs. a craze is the way it is incorporated into a bathroom design. Simple always equals classic, elegant and timeless!” Andy Villasana, Andy Villasana Design.
