e do obsess over water. We either have too much, not enough or it’s misbehaving in the form of a thunderstorm or floodin . Regardless, water is our lifeline and essential to our survival. There is a lot of water to be seen in this issue from H2O in pedestal sinks (page 10) and wash basins (page 82) to a sky-high pool and hot tub (page 22). And what is instrumental in many landscapes? Moving water... whether a water garden (page 44) or water squirting out of a ladybug's mouth to the delight of children (page 86). Our Baths of the Year contest winners once again present a high level of creative excellence (page 32). Design with a twist, tile off the charts, tubs evoking relaxation and a broad use of white make this year's winners quite extraordinary. Get ready to be immersed in water...just in time to battle the August heat. Stay cool....Suzie

EDITED BY MELISSA MAUZY PHOTOGRAPHY BY COLIN MILLER/STRAUSS PEYTON
JENNIFER TRENTADUE, DESIGNER AT
HENRY PLUMBING, TALKS THE BEST IN BATHROOM DESIGN.
SLHL: What are the latest trends in bathroom design? Jennifer: No longer are bathrooms strictly utilitarian, but rather a place of luxury and convenience. Custom showers with steam, body sprays and rain heads have taken the place of the Whirlpool bath. Freestanding tubs, heated floors and crazy, fun new tile designs are the latest trends I see. SLHL: What is the best way to maximize space in a small bath? Jennifer: One of the best and simplest ways to maximize space in a small bathroom is to include recessed storage, in the form of niches, medicine cabinets, etc. Recessed storage allows for extra storage without reducing square footage. Tiled niches add flair without overwhelming the space. You even can get them with outlets, TVs or refrigerated storage for medication or skin care…all within your wall! SLHL: What are must-have features in a master bath? Jennifer: A large walk-in shower. The shower is the feature of the space. Design components such as tile design must refle t the homeowner and the theme of the space, making the homeowner’s everyday shower experience the peak of their day. Showers also can be combined with a whirlpool in the same room. This is called a wet room. It creates an area that is a walk-in shower without a door. The tub is then installed in the same room, creating an open feel and great look. SLHL: What do you need to consider when moving plumbing for a master-bath redesign? Jennifer: The main thing to consider when moving plumbing for a master-bath redesign is how it will affect the rest of the home. In some cases, moving the plumbing isn’t too big of a deal. However, some
16
scenarios, such as an upper-level bath redesign, will require construction through the lower levels and up through the ceiling. Another thing to consider when moving plumbing is the wall type in which you want to move to. Different wall types are more suitable for plumbing. I try to avoid moving any plumbing to an exterior wall so that the pipes don’t freeze in the winter. Knowing what is possible and what is not possible is key to making a design successful. SLHL: What is an open-plan bath? Are you seeing more designs like this? Jennifer: The open-plan bath is a design trend that really started in the hotel industry and is now moving into residential spaces. This type of bathroom has little or no separation between the master bedroom and the master bathroom. The idea is to seamlessly transition the rooms into each other and to open the space up and make it feel larger. Like I said earlier, bathrooms are a place of luxury; why hide it? I’ve seen many open-plan bathrooms in hotels, and I have seen the trend begin to take shape in the St. Louis area. It is a great design trend but has a rather specific market. A family with four kids might not find the open plan as useful. Mom might need a door to hide behind sometimes. SLHL: What is the most important feature to include in a guest bathroom? Jennifer: Storage! No one likes to travel somewhere only to have no place to put their Dopp kits and makeup bags with all of their toiletries. Also, easy access to towels and necessities is important. See www. stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

EMBRACING A
True Calling
AFTER FIVE DECADES, ARTIST TY DE LAVENTA REALIZED HIS TRUE CALLING AS A SCULPTOR AND ABSTRACT PAINTER.
BY KELLIE HYNES PHOTOGRAPHY BY COLIN MILLER/STRAUSS PEYTON
Ty de LaVenta’s story begins with the August 1949 issue of LIFE magazine, which profiled the life and works of Jackson Pollock. Nine-year-old de LaVenta was so enthralled with Pollock’s paintings that he was determined to become an artist himself. Unfortunately artist wasn’t a respected or viable career choice in his small farming community, so he channeled his creative energy into a construction business. De LaVenta’s dream remained unfulfilled until fi e decades later, when a spiritual experience at the Mayan ruins of Tulum compelled him to create his first sculpture. That sculpture was selected for a juried art exhibition by the St. Louis Artists’ Guild. Encouraged by the jury’s validation and his supportive wife, de LaVenta finally realized his true calling, first as a sculptor and then, at the age of 70, as an abstract painter. De LaVenta’s paintings are energetic and expansive. He works with acrylic on canvas, adding materials that he makes himself, like powdered nickel and bronze. Using the knowledge gained from his years in construction, he’s currently developing a new paint which he promises will “capture and move the light.” The process De LaVenta employs before he picks up a brush is even more intriguing than the materials. de LaVenta is a devoted practitioner of Vipassana Meditation, and meditates for up to two hours before he paints. “If I don’t get in that space, then I don’t paint. And I’m careful not to paint if there’s anything that upsets me. I don’t want that [negative emotion] in the studio or in the canvas,” he says. Once his mind is clear, de LaVenta paints with abandon. “I’m not aware of time when I’m in my studio. I just paint intuitively,” he explains. A conversation with de LaVenta about his own paintings doubles as a lesson in art history. He references master painters with knowledge and admiration usually reserved for one’s closest friends. He draws inspiration from Yves Klein, Mark Rothko and Diego Rivera (a.k.a. Mr. Frida Kahlo), among others. “Rivera is so bold with his colors.

7/13/15 12:17 PM
[His work] tells me to be bold, too,” de LaVenta says. Jackson Pollock, of course, is still ever present in de LaVenta’s consciousness. “Pollock brings emotions to the canvas. When you’re in front of his work, you experience him. You experience his emotion,” de LaVenta says. That same emotional connection is what de LaVenta hopes to evoke with his own work. John Camie of Creve Coeur purchased an original painting from de LaVenta, and responds to the painting on an visceral level, “My painting...is a stunning expression of emotional experience. It’s not passive. I encounter it every day as a new experience,” Camie says. For more information on commissioning an original piece, contact Ty at tdelaventa@gmail.com. Taking Luxury TO NEW HEIGHTS
Brilliantly designed, this sky-top condominium in the CWE capitalizes on its 360-degree views of the city.
urveying the landscape from his spectacular terrace, the owner of this high-rise condominium in Park East Tower quips, “It’s like having the ultimate model train set. Looking down, you can see everything in miniature.” Behind him, a fountain burbles softly and sunlight sparkles on the surface of his swimming pool… yes, a private pool, hundreds of feet in the air! A radiologist at Anderson Hospital in Maryville, IL, the owner considers the Central West End a “practical location” for his daily commute and had owned several other units in the eclectic downtown neighborhood. Park East caught his attention while the building was still in the planning stages, and he purchased an entire floor from the developer, Opus Northwest, during preconstruction. Working with Nathan Bavolek of Opus and longtime St. Louis builder Vern Hackett, he custom designed a unique L-shaped floo plan that
allows for panoramic views of the city in every direction. The finished layout provides nearly 4,000 square feet of interior space and another 1,600 square feet of outdoor living space, including three balconies and the massive terrace. The owner’s choice of Hackett was never in question. The two met in the early 1990s. Hackett worked on and built two of the owner’s former homes and, over the years, their respective families have become close friends. On hand for the tour, Hackett described his client as having “really good visions,” adding that much of the interior décor for the new condominium was designed to recreate the elegant traditional styling of the owner’s previous home in Ladue. As intended, the condominium’s ambience is dominated by its expansive window walls and breathtaking views. High ceilings enhance the sense of volume, and taupe-toned walls and quarter-sawn white-oak STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM AUGUST 2015

floo ing establish a neutral background for the dramatic architectural elements and the owner’s classic furnishings and original artwork. A box-beam ceiling with recessed lighting spans the vast living/ dining area, and Oriental silk rugs define the individual spaces. Designed and crafted by Hackett, the living room’s imposing fi eplace is embellished with a powerful seascape by Serbian-American artist Alexander Dzigurski. The Steinway grand piano is flan ed by an intimate seating arrangement – Christopher Guy chairs upholstered in a bold silk herringbone and a lacquer tray table – and a well-established ficus tree in a planter from Bowood Farms brings a touch of nature inside. The dining area showcases a large crystal pendant chandelier, suspended above an exquisite crotch-mahogany table from the Heritage Heirloom Collection. Inlaid with a border of ribbon-striped mahogany, the table is surrounded by hand-painted fruitwood dining chairs, and additional seascapes – two by the senior Dzigurski, another by his son, Alexander II – are displayed on the interior wall. Unique ceiling fi tures light an arched hallway leading to the sun-fille suite reserved for the owner’s mother, a spritely nonagenarian who thoroughly enjoys her magnificent view of the Arch to the east. The hall also illustrates Hackett’s ingenuity, with tall, picture-framed mirror
panels concealing access to the home’s mechanical equipment. Returning to the dining area, a short flight of steps leads up to the family-room level, where a curved floo -to-ceiling window wall integrates the space with the expansive open-air terrace. A compass symbol, embedded in the floo , is a reminder of the multidirectional views, and a saddle-colored leather sofa with curved back fits perfectly into the rounded nook. Set against one window is another clever Hackett innovation – a large, dual-screen TV lift cabinet, handsomely crafted and viewable from both the family room and the outdoor hot tub. Open to the family room, the spacious kitchen also exhibits the builder’s fine craftsmanship. Corbels carved with Corinthian acanthus leaves support the 15-foot island, and Junipero del Classico countertops from Brazil complement the cream-colored, umber-glazed cabinetry, Amerock brass hardware and custom range hood. Two dishwashers and an icemaker were of special importance to the owner, since he entertains frequently, and other state-of-the-art appliances include two Wolf ovens (one in the butler’s pantry) and a Sharp cabinet-drawer microwave. Adding a splash of color to this fabulous entertainment space are a vivid circular canvas and two additional paintings by Brazilian artist Romero Britto. Occupying a full wing of the condominium, the owner’s retreat features a Russian sleigh bed and matching chest, bench and dresser, all in pecan from Frank Patton Interiors. Seven ink-and-wash drawings by a Russian artist carry the theme from the master bedroom to the sumptuous bath, with its circular soffit oval island tub, sunken shower, oversized Crema Marfil floor tiles, Grohe fi tures and dual vanities with LEDs under-lighting the Emparador Light countertops. Although privacy is hardly an issue at this height, the bedroom windows, like all of the windows throughout the home, were fit ed with automated privacy shade systems by The Sound Room, who also installed the whole-house sound system. Always attentive to detail, Hackett concealed the shade tracks in the owner’s suite with classic columnar wood trim. The home’s pièce de résistance, however, is the massive, multilevel terrace overlooking Forest Park to the west. At the north end is a bilevel Dimension One swim spa and fountain, designed by Bavolek and encased in marble by Hackett. Splashing water into a subtly lit pool, the fountain is a charming bronze sculpture by Corinne Hartley. McKinnon and Harris outdoor furniture, upholstered in a Tommy Bahama fabric, an electric grill and two granite serving counters fill the center of the terrace, and at the far end is an Aspen Spas hot tub. Disco lighting creates an ever-changing display of color through the hot tub’s glass-block surround, and the deck is arrayed with automatically watered planters, lush with greenery and bright seasonal flowers. Brilliantly designed and masterfully crafted, this extraordinary residence is truly an architectural wonder – an urban haven in the sky, high above the hustle and bustle of the city streets. historically honored
When approaching the master-bath remodel of this historic St. Louis Tudor, Karr Bick Kitchen & Bath made certain the new design honored the original details found throughout the rest of the home. A Tudor arch window became the focal point of the room, so Karr Bick placed a freestanding tub beneath the window and lined the walls with custom wainscot furniture panels. A window bench was created in an unfinished floor ea discovered during demolition. A chandelier centered in the arch leads your eye that way. The previous bathroom closed off the shower into a corner. It did not fit the style of the house, so Karr Bick removed the walls surrounding it and replaced it with clear glass to enlarge the space, brighten it and highlight it with beautiful Calacatta marble tile walls. Cabinetry painted in a soft, fog gray with a caramel glaciered glaze has a built-in furniture look. To make the cabinetry and tub pop, a darker Greystone Marble porcelain floor tile was selected. The floo ing nicely contrasts with the time-worn look of the Bianco Imperial honed-stone countertops and classic marble shower tile. A built-in closet was removed to make more space for the second vanity. The renovated bathroom is now as regal as the rest of the grand, old home.
Why the judges love it:
This master-bath redo is very respectful of the Tudor era. The craftsmanship in the cabinetry and millwork is beautiful. We love how the designer captured the original arch. PHOTOGRAPHY BY STUDIO10SEVEN. STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM AUGUST 2015

classic comfort
The beautiful Calacatta marble that blankets this master bath was the basis of the design. Selected for its beautiful white tone and earthy veins that run through it, the 18”x18” marble tiles were hand selected and placed specifically by designer April Jensen, ADJ Interiors, and the tile installer. Chrome plumbing fi tures paired with the accessories add shine to the classic design style. The freestanding tub adds a modern sensibility to the space with its simple silhouette. The shower is curbless, creating a seamless transition between the master-bath area and shower. The vanity area is broken up into two sinks with a beautiful storage piece in between, which allows the vanity to have more dimension and feel more furniture-like. The custom-designed vanities highlight architectural staples such as pediments, crown and columns, giving a classic, stately feel.
Why the judges love it:
The effective use of marble in this master bath makes for a gorgeous end result. We like how the tub area is framed, even though it is part of the large space. The Roman shades are a beautiful, finishing touch. PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALISE O’BRIEN.

calming retreat
To escape the stresses of the day, the homeowners of this 123-square-foot quaint bath need not go far. From the gym, you approach a full glass wall that sets the stage for the entrance to this long and narrow bath designed by KBuild Design. Metal blinds partition the rooms. A glowing stacked-stone wall surrounds the vanity and is the dramatic focal point of the room. The stone is the perfect contrast to the smooth linen pattern on the tile floor. The furniture-style vanity features an open shelf on the bottom for storage of bathroom linens. The true escape in this bath is the steam shower. At the push of a button, you can melt into a soothing cloud of eucalyptus-scented steam. Covered in 78”x78” onyx tile, the shower is equipped with a 10” square rain showerhead, a handheld shower and body sprays for the ultimate relaxing experience.
Why the judges love it:
Unique and creative, this bathroom is calming and spa-like. The dry stacked-stone wall is a nice anchor for the space. The glass wall that separates the bathroom from the workout room makes the space feel expansive and is very cool! PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANNE MATHEIS.

marble masterpiece
A young family took their outdated master bathroom down to the studs and brought it back to a modern-day beauty with the help of Julie Baur, Baur Interiors. Their goal was to preserve the “old” feel and charm of their existing Central West End home, but bring the space to current times. The floo , walls and ceiling are richly covered in a classic white-and-gray marble. Even the crown mouldings are applied in marble. The curves of the freestanding tub mimic the arched alcove in which it is neatly tucked. A pedestal sink gives a touch of the old charm with exposed plumbing. As another nod to the previous era, the original shower door was remade to look exactly the same as the original. Modern day amenities paired with classic finishes bring this outdated bath into the present while retaining the feel of the past.
Why the judges love it:
Timeless and classic, the bath design stayed true to the architecture of the era and area. The arched tub alcove is beautifully tucked away. We love the juxtaposition of the larger marble tiles on the floor with the smaller tile on the walls of the tub area. PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALISE O’BRIEN.

On the wall behind the tub, rich, wood-look tile wraps up the wall and into the shower from floor to ceiling. The entrance to the shower is seamless with frameless shower glass. The designer created a nice contrast between the wood-look tile on the shower wall and the onyx on the shower floo . A Grohe rain showerhead enhances the sense of tranquility found in the space. The dark finish on the floating vanities is illuminated by the subtle glow of under-cabinet lights. Atop the vanity sits a large, round ceramic vessel bowl for contrast. To bring the master bath up to the level of quality of the rest of the home, brooksBerry combined high-contrast materials with a modern curve, creating a masculine retreat. The homeowners’ requests: a large shower, a double vanity and a soaking tub. brooksBerry designed the shower with graphic color blocks of charcoal in the floo ing and shower tile. At the end of the bathroom, a band of suede Brown Fossil stone was laid in a running-bond pattern, which sets the shower area apart from the rest of the bath. A matching custom-cut herringbone panel in the same stone was set on the back wall of the shower for a graphic punch. A large-scale antiqued marble was set in a herringbone pattern on the remaining floor and running bond in the shower. The alternating bond and herringbone patterns provide a textural experience. Blocked-out, open towel areas in the custom glossy-charcoal vanity provide storage, while the shape of the mirrors and oval tub bring a touch of feminine shapes to this otherwise masculine space.
Why the judges love it:

elegant escape
The homeowners of this 62-square-foot master bath had one simple request for designers Herzog Kitchen & Bath‌make it feel like a resort. Given the small square footage of the space, careful thought and planning went into transforming the space into an elegant escape. For the vanity area, Herzog wanted to create an inviting, clean look. Floor-to-ceiling glitzy mosaic tiles create the backdrop for the area. The textured foil vanity is hung on the wall to allow an open, airy feel. To enhance the glitz from the mosaic-tiled wall, transparent crystal glass vessel bowls were selected. In the shower, Herzog created the illusion of height by running the field tile vertically. A decorative strip of the mosaic tile ties the shower to the vanity area. To finish the space, the fi tures complement the soft, yet crisp tones in this elegant escape.
Why the judges love it:
The tile detail in this small master bath is outstanding. You can tell the designer and homeowners really thought through the functionality of the space for a well-planned design with lots of storage. Four years ago
when Mark Kalk set out to create the garden that would surround his Lafayette Square home, he found himself between a rock and a hard place. Literally. He and his partner Mark Lammert had just purchased four parcels of empty land grouped together to create a .3-acre site. On that space they planned to design and construct a new home in the style of the surrounding historic homes and a garden that would complement the beauty of the house. Following in the footsteps of both his father and grandfather, who were avid gardeners, the landscaping of the property fell to Mark Kalk. He recently had retired from the biology and life sciences department of Washington University
and was an active Master Gardener. Eager to get started, he began work on the garden while the home still was being built. The digging was not quite what he bargained for. “Years ago, when they demolished homes,” he explains, “they knocked down the walls and let everything fall into the middle. In time, weeds and vines grew over everything.” That meant every shovel that went into the ground brought out more pieces of old brick than decent soil. He also turned up lots of old bottles, the hood of a car, old pieces of clothing and, miraculously, a totally intact pack of cigarettes. Then, there were the huge foundation

stones that required a crowbar to wedge them out of the earth. He rolled those to a corner of the property to be repurposed and later line many garden pathways. Bringing in new soil and amending what soil remained became a top priority. Mark’s master plan included a stream and pond and numerous room-like garden spaces to provide different ways to enjoy the landscape. To enhance those spaces he hoped to concentrate on perennials, most of them Missouri natives that were adept at surviving in what Mark calls “our nutty climate. Those plans have mostly worked out,” he says. Several of the garden spaces became part of the home construction. The design of the greenhouse-like conservatory off the back of the

house, which also is set up with a large table to act as an extra dining room, was inspired by the historic Linnean (green) House at the Missouri Botanical Garden. A stucco-walled outdoor dining room, off of the living room, has the ambiance of a Spanish courtyard and was inspired somewhat by the Mediterranean garden in the Botanical Garden’s Temperate House. A small, walled, private space, directly off the home’s library, has only one chair and is meant for quiet contemplation. A shady, walled space on the opposite side of the house, accented with clematis vines and hostas, has been termed the “dog memorial garden” and includes plaques honoring much-loved pets. A curtained gazebo, just off the conservatory, offers a second outdoor

dining room and can be lit at night by a candle-filled chandelier. Then, there are the numerous spots around the pond for relaxing and looking at the water. Several beckon with colorful chairs and bright pots of fl wers and greenery. And finally, at the back of the property, raised beds offer up a collection of vegetables and herbs. Gravel and mulched paths provide navigation routes through the landscape and a way for a visitor to take it all in. Knowing his limits, Mark brought in a bulldozer to do the pond excavation and assist with the moving of the bolder-sized stones that became the footing for the bridges and waterfall. ‘’If the stones fell somewhere and were stable, it was great. We left them where they fell and worked with that,” Mark says with a laugh. The overall design and depth of the pond is tilted slightly to allow it to overfl w into a rain garden if the water in the pond gets too high. “We usually don’t have to water the rain garden until August,” he notes. While Mark was certain as to what he wanted in terms of garden rooms, he was open to a variety of natives and perennials. “I just

knew I wanted something tall here and a lot of color there,” he explains, motioning around the garden. “It took the first two to three years of the garden’s existence for the plants to become established,” he adds. He estimates that around 100 different plants are incorporated into the garden. Current favorite plants include spring-fl wering Baptesia australis with their tall, gray-green foliage and indigo, sweet pea-like blossoms; Joe Pye weed (Eutrochium) with tall, lance-leaf foliage and clusters

But that doesn’t mean the garden’s exuberance doesn’t spill outside to be shared with anyone walking or driving by. In front of the brick house, a series of

minutes to take in the expanse of plants and color. For Mark Lammert coming home and just looking at the pond and surrounding garden is a way of "relaxing right away." For Mark Kalk, it is a lush, living, technicolor embodiment of his hard work and planning. But no matter how lovely and relaxing, Mark Kalk is still the personification of the maxim "a gardener's work is never done." I always find something else I want to do," he says with a sllightly embarrassed smile. See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources. STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM

Butterflie , bees and hummingbirds aren’t just fun to see flut ering about your garden. They also serve as pollinators for plants and fl wers. SLHL asked local landscapers their favorite plantings to attract butterflies and bee . BY MELISSA MAUZY
“The perennial Professor Kippenburg Dwarf Aster is a great fl wering plant that blooms in late summer and early fall. This aster is drought and heat tolerant and will continue to bloom through early fall after other fl wers quit. Bees and butterflies are attracted to its bright, clear-blue, daisy-like fl wer. It's a great small border-type plant or for use in containers.” David Sherwood, Sherwood’s Forest.
“Lantana (Lantana camara) and Trailing Lantana (Lantana montevidensis) are a favorite of butterflies and hummingbi ds alike. Typically found as an annual specimen in our area, it is a low-maintenance plant and can survive intense heat and drought. They are one of the most colorful plants in the garden, available in a multitude of colors and multihued varieties.” Jim Graeler, Chesterfield alley Nursery.
“One of our favorite plants to attract butterflies is sclepias, also known as Butterfly Weed. This Missouri native has brilliant-orange fl wers from June through August. The fl wer nectar is great for attracting adult butterflie , while the leaves are an excellent food source for Monarch larvae.” Daniel Mee, Frisella Nursery.
“The Pink Micro Chip Butterfly Bush is small yet mighty! A mini Butterfly Bush, ink Micro Chip only grows 18-24" tall and wide. Abundant pink flower panicles appear nonstop from early summer into fall. Its diminutive size makes it ideal for small gardens, containers or as a ground cover or edger. Butterflie delight in its sweet nectar.” Ann Lapides, Sugar Creek Gardens.

Beautiful Boxwoods EDITED BY MELISSA MAUZY PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF MISSOURI BOTANICAL GARDEN
A visit to the Ruth Palmer Blanke Boxwood Garden virtually transports visitors to another time and place, as the meticulous plantings display the Missouri Botanical Garden’s outstanding collection of boxwood. There are 60 unique varieties of boxwood in the Boxwood Garden, which have the reputation of being difficul to grow in the Midwest. Boxwoods have been valued in gardens for thousands of years, from the “pleasure gardens” of ancient Persia and the landscapes of Greece and Rome, to the formal gardens of Europe. The elegant beauty of boxwood gives shape, structure and evergreen foliage to the garden setting. The Missouri Botanical Garden’s interest in boxwood stems from the work of the late Edgar Anderson, former director of the Garden and a distinguished member of its scientific staff for 40 years. In 1969, Dr. Anderson established a test program at the Garden to identify hardy strains of boxwood collected from Asia and the Balkans. The Edgar Anderson Boxwood Memorial Area, accessible by the steps on the east side of the Garden, showcases the Boxwood that Anderson obtained during his 1934 trip to the Balkans. As visitors follow the path, they arrive at a quiet pavilion resting on a rise and fin a quiet place to sit in the shade on a hot summer day. Here they’ll enjoy the view of the beautifully designed boxwood garden, as well as the surrounding grounds of the English Woodland Garden. See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

WHY IS THE TOP FLOOR OF MY HOUSE SO HOT AND WHAT CAN I DO ABOUT IT? ANSWER: The first step is to figure out the cause. Generally speaking, there are 4 main reasons why your top floor may be hard to cool…
— Air conditioning is all about airflow. Every room needs a certain
volume of air to be supplied in order to cool correctly. It is imperative that heating/cooling systems have been properly designed to supply enough air. — Hot air wants to rise. It is important that your system is designed to draw in the hottest air from the ceiling and return it to the air conditioner for cooling. Otherwise, the cold air supplied to the top floor will just run down the steps — The thermostat located on the main floor is unaware that it is hot upstairs. — Your attic is not well insulated. In many homes we find that more than one and possibly all of the above factors need improvement. — For supply air, we first calculate how much air the room needs to
DESIGN BUILD REMODEL
cool properly and compare that to the existing capacity. We then design a way to run larger or additional ducts to the area. — For return air, we install return ducts as high as possible on the top floor wall to bring the hot air back to the system. — We may consider installing a “Zone Control” system that includes a thermostat for independent control of top floor temperature. — We evaluate the existing insulation and install air sealing and insulation materials to keep the cool air where you want it. — If it is not practical to run additional ducts, we will sometimes recommend a “Mini Split” system to provide cool air to just the challenging areas. Fixing a top floor temperature problem requires analysis of causes and development of one or more engineered solutions. Contrary to popular belief, the fix almost never includes buying a larger air conditioner.

MASTER OF
A young scion of an Italian wine family adds some fun to the August heat.
BY LORRAINE RAGUSEO PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF QUINTESSENTIAL WINES
When it comes to wine, Italy’s Piedmont region – the charming, hilly terrain southwest of Milan – has two faces. The southwestern sector produces mostly big red wines made from the Nebbiolo grape that are generally very tannic and need time to mature before being consumed. The northeastern part, in close proximity to the River Tanaro, which imparts a slight marine influence that allows the grapes there to mature faster and produce less-harsh tannins, is better known for lighter, more modern-style wines, such as Barbera and Barbaresco. The northeastern part also produces white wines from native grapes Arneis and Cortese that showcase how refreshing and fun drinking Italian wines can be. It is also from this area that the white Moscato grape hails. Many believe that Moscato has the highest level of complex aromas of any Piedmont grape, with various fl wers, fruits and honey bursting from

the bottle when opened. At its best it is refreshing and sweet but not cloying and defini ely easy to enjoy. A young man, whose family’s history of growing grapes in this region goes back to the mid-1800s, is making the best Moscato d’Asti coming from Italy today. Luca Bosio, only 19 when he started making wines under his own name, embraced his family’s grape-growing and winemaking endeavors with a passion, intensity and vigor that is a product of his youth, his pride in his heritage and his training. After having been raised among the vines, Luca expanded on his native talents by studying oenology at the fabled University of Turin, where he received the Italian equivalent of a bachelors degree and furthering that education with a masters degree in oenology. Luca has brought a wave of freshness and novelty, both in the technological and commercial arenas, that led to great success during

the past eight years he has been in control of the winery his grandparents and father started in the 1960s. His timeline coincided with the explosion in Moscato popularity in the United States and around the world. Younger consumers have been more accepting of sweet wines such as Moscato, giving the best of them a place at the table like any other fine wine . The Luca Bosio vineyards and winery lie in a part of Italy long associated with bubbly wines – the Provence of Asti. With a bit of effervescence, his Moscato d’Asti is lighter and fresher tasting than most other Moscatos and even more fun. In August’s heat, it is ideal served chilled before dinner as an aperitif (the Italian way) or with desserts that feature coffee, chocolate or hazelnut fl vors, such as Italian gelatos, Tiramisu or Torta di Nocciole – Italian hazelnut cake that is very popular in the Piedmont. Luca also feels very strongly that other native Italian white grapes, especially Arneis (labeled as Roero Arneis since the vineyards are near the town of Roero) and Cortese (better known as Gavi and also named for the town near to the vineyards), can make fine dry white wines perfect for quaffin on their own, or at the summer dinner table. A light chicken salad or white-flesh fish, such as flounde , halibut or sole rubbed in extra-virgin Italian olive oil and delicate herbs like rosemary or thyme and then simply grilled, bring out both the fruity and floral characters of these whites. In fact, an entire summer meal can revolve solely around the wines from Luca’s part of the Piedmont, especially if you include a red like the Luca Bosio Barbera d’Asti. It is enjoyed by his family with light, spicy dishes such as pasta bolognese, with Italian or even some Spanish chorizo sausage added to the traditional meat mix. It’s young, talented winemakers and owners like Luca that are bringing the fun factor of Italian wines to St. Louis wine lovers, young and old. See www.stlouishomesmag.com for recipes. NOT YOUR TYPICAL
Bath Design BY MELISSA MAUZY PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANNE MATHEIS
Back-to-back vanities, a floating mir or and a meticulous flooring de ign transform a dated Wildwood bathroom into a fresh master retreat. Tired of their dated master bath, a Wildwood couple was ready to transform their space into an elegant retreat. Crisp, fresh and clean were all buzz words at the forefront of the new design. Keeping the overall footprint of the existing space, the homeowners worked with bath designer Paula Anane, Signature Kitchen and Bath, and their trusted contractor Kurt Weiss, Weiss Construction, to create the master bath of their dreams. A beautiful, white Victoria + Albert freestanding soaking tub centered in an alcove under a large arched window is the dramatic focal point of the bath. Flanking the tub on the left and right are tall, decorative linen cabinets for storage. To get away from the dated look of their former built-in Jacuzzi tub, the freestanding tub is lighter and opens up the space. “One of the goals of this project was to utilize the large space in a more effective way,” Anane says. Another area of the old bath that felt closed in was the shower.
76
Previously a small 5’x3’ fibe glass shower unit, the new design called for a large walk-in shower with a clear-glass panel that divides the shower from the room. Contractor Kurt Weiss designed a seamless infini y drain tucked under the plumbing wall in the shower, creating a zero-degree entrance which allowed the beautiful marble tile floor design to continue throughout the whole space. Now not only light and bright, the shower design also can accommodate the homeowners in the later years of their lives. Unique to the space, the his-and-her vanities were designed in a back-to-back application. Centered underneath an arched transom window, the design allows the homeowners to have their own private spaces customized to their individual needs. For the wife, pullout drawers with places to store her hair dryer and curling iron eliminate cords. In between the vanities are two tiled columns that anchor a double-sided suspended mirror. The floating mirror follows through

with the open-concept design. “The floating mirror is most unique,” says the homeowner. “It looks like you are looking straight through a window because the refle tion is the same as the other side.” Trying to avoid the typical double-bowl sink vanity with a middle make-up area, the homeowners came up with the idea for the back-to-back vanities but found many contractors unwilling to execute the design. “When we met Paula, she said ‘Yes! We do! We have done that before,’” the homeowner says. “She and I just hit it off.” In addition to the challenge of the floating mirror and vanities, the intricate floo ing design was a major undertaking for all. The homeowner saw the AKDO mosaic accent tile on Houzz, and it became the inspiration for the style of the entire bath. Instead of blanketing the entire floor in the tile, which would be a budget buster, the tile was used as an accent piece paired with a natural polished marble stone. Inset into the polished stone, the leaf pattern required meticulous
thought and planning on the part of Anane and Weiss. “The accent tile is actually a 12”x12” tile, and we needed to cut it down to 6-inch strips,” Anane explains. Each tile had to be calculated, hand cut and config red to ensure the pattern would continue to fl w as it had intended. “Weiss’ attention to detail and meticulous calculations resulted in an outstanding finished spac ,” she says. To complete the crisp, clean look, the walls were painted a neutral gray, which perfectly marries the accent tile in the flooring, the Carrera marble and the tile columns on the vanity and shower wall. The Cambria quartz countertops are snow white with reflective gem-like crystals, and paired with the chrome faucets, light fixtures and cabinetry hardware bring a touch of bling to the beautiful space. MEDICINE CABINET
Luxe BY SARA GRAHAM PHOTOGRAPHY BY KOHLER AND COURTESY OF PREMIER PLUMBING STUDIO
Bathroom storage solutions are more customized and functional than ever. The desire for more storage, technology and luxury in the bathroom has resulted in a new design aesthetic that offers a high level of customization, convenience and utility. “Homeowners have moved past plated glass mirrors that cover the entire wall, “ observes Amy Launius, Showroom Manager of Premier Plumbing Studio. Mirrors, lights and shelves now can be configu ed into almost unlimited arrangements that suit a variety of functional requirements and style preferences.
Function: New developments in space utilization and efficie y have significantly upgraded the functionality of bathroom design. • Small shelves and racks hold hard-to-store eyewear, razors, contact-lens cases and cosmetics. • Shelf-mounted magnetic strips allow users to keep track of small items like tweezers and nail clippers. • Automatic interior lights turn on when the door is opened and off when closed. • Cabinet-mounted magnifying mirrors extend on swinging arms at adjustable heights to cater to multiple users. • Vertically opening cabinet doors are optimal for small spaces and some feature shock absorbers that facilitate opening. • Locking cabinets store prescription medicines, razors and other potentially harmful materials away from children and guests.
Technology: Today’s innovative technology inspires an approach to home design that responds to the demand for uninterrupted access to information and data and the need to power and charge power multiple electrical and wireless devices. • Mirror-integrated TVs offer a high-tech option for news and entertainment. • Mirror-integrated LED lighting provides seamless and energy-efficien illumination. • Outlets mounted to cabinet interiors power frequently used corded items such as hair dryers, curling and flat irons, electric toothbrushes and electric razors at a convenient height. • USB ports charge mobile devices. • A timer-enabled electronic defogger eliminates steamy mirrors. • A refrigerator installed directly in the medicine cabinet keeps temperature-sensitive medications and products with a short shelf life cold, while also keeping beverages on hand.
Whether you are working with a small space, upgrading your home’s gadget capacity or creating a relaxing retreat, there is an exciting abundance of options available for a personalized solution. See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

If you are looking for a single focal-point sink that is big enough for multiple family members to share, consider a trough sink. BY MELISSA MAUZY

Hawaiian Haven BY BARBARA E. STEFANO PHOTOGRAPHY BY KIM DILLON

A St. Charles couple creates a slice of the tropics in their own backyard.
When husband and wife Patty and Tom of St. Charles put the fin shing touches on their Florida-style home two years ago, their focus quickly turned to creating an outdoor haven that was just as welcoming as the interior. “We have three children, and our oldest [son] has two kids and our daughter had our third grandchild,” explains Patty. “That’s how the whole [backyard project] got started. We wanted a space we could share with them.” Patty and Tom took inspiration for their tropic-themed outdoor space from wood plaques they brought home from a recent trip to Hawaii.
Marc Christian Fine Cabinetry incorporated the plaques into the bar front. The couple loved the openness of the Florida look, borrowing a house floorplan from a Florida designer and getting help from architect Donna Boxx to tweak the design to their tastes and bring the plan into compliance with Missouri building codes. “It’s kind of a unique home for St. Louis, I think because of the exterior, which is EFIS (exterior insulation and finish system),” says the couple of the stucco-like finish. At the back of the house is the lanai, complete with a mini kitchen and tropical bar, and a concrete floor beautifully stamped with tropical leaves. There, the family enjoys many meals STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM AUGUST 2015

together in full view of the wooded bluffs in their secluded area. Patty and Tom carried the theme into the rest of the 2 ½-acre property, hiring Baker Pool & Spa to install a pool with a children’s splash pad and a 4-inch-deep tanning shelf. It’s surrounded with a neutral stone retaining wall, bold deck chairs, wicker lounge furniture and – perhaps a bit surprising – faux palm trees and turf. “We didn’t want to have dirt by the pool and didn’t want grass shavings that would get in the pool. They make AstroTurf that is very, very realistic now,” explains Patty. “We didn’t want anything that was going to look fake. We feel it’s very colorful and comfortable. We love going to the beach, so we sort of have it now – our retreat.” While the grandkids are horsing around the splash pad, the adults can find amusement on the putting green or the sport court, complete with volleyball net, basketball hoop and batting cage. A built-in sound, lighting and media system by The Sound Room allows Patty and Tom to control all the electronics – stereo, television, fans, and yard and pool lights – via iPad. “Planning is very important. We did not rush into it,” says the couple. “And I guess it’s kind of good to get some kind of theme in your head. St. Louis isn’t the first place you think of when you think tropical, but it turned out very, very nice.” See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

IS IT A CLASSIC OR IS IT A CRAZE For our August bath issue, we asked local kitchen and bath professionals if freestanding tubs are a classic or a craze. Here’s what they had to say.
© Emotionart | Dreamstime.com
CLASSIC "I think the freestanding tub is a classic. From the early days of clawfoot tubs to the modern sleek versions today, no matter what design you choose it always becomes the focal point. They now have several types of freestanding tubs that offer different systems including jets and heated backrest. They also come in larger sizes, so they are more comfortable than their predecessors." Linda Thomas, Signature Kitchen & Bath. “No doubt, the freestanding tub is an enduring classic with no boundaries. Unencumbered by walls, they serve comfortably in the center of the room or snuggle to full-length windows as if floating in the trees and view. Contemporary or traditional, any style is at home with the freestanding tub. A freestanding tub allows easy adjustment of window treatments that other tubs require climbing and stretching for opening or closing.” Jane Ganz, Directions in Design, Inc. "Freestanding tubs are timeless and classic. Throughout history and the world they have stood the test of time. Styles range from the elegant, traditional clawfoot tub to something very sleek and contemporary. The freestanding tub design opens up space giving an airy feel and look to your bathroom, thus creating a spa‑like environment for soaking and relaxation. A variety of tub materials, such as acrylic, cast iron, copper, stainless steel and stone offer design opportunities to please any style." Ashleigh Schroeder, National Kitchen & Bath.
"Classic. A clawfoot tub is classic and has been around for years, yet the design and function has been improved tremendously. Plumbing manufacturers continue to appease the consumer with newer lines, curves and features in freestanding tubs. Some of these newer designs may be more contemporary but can be paired with more traditional cabinetry creating a timeless design. As long as consumers yearn for a relaxing, soothing bath, a freestanding tub will always be an option to consider." Jeanne Liston, Liston Construction Company. “Like most other trends, there are ways to interpret the freestanding tub to make it classic, and there are ways to overdo it and date yourself. Finding that balance is hard. I let the architecture of the home drive the bathroom design and if the tub harmonizes with the interior architecture, it still will feel fresh decades later.” Paige McClellan, Niche. “Classic! In the right space, you can create a focal point that is timeless, clean and elegant. Freestanding tubs have been around forever, but over the years have created more overall style choices of the tub by either using ball-and-claw feet, a pedestal or a smooth floo -mounted version. You can even paint the underneath sides to add a pop of color. Try one with an air-bath system to enhance the bathing experience with hydrotherapy." Anne Boedges, Anne Marie Design Studio.
