St. Louis is fortunate to have the Frank Lloyd Wright House in Ebsworth Park in Kirkwood, MO. Experience the genius of the renowned architect by touring the extraordinary residence.

FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT, master architect living from 1867-1959, was a true visionary who was well ahead of his time. He stood for clean lines and simplicity in the field of architecture and held the belief that buildings made from the land benefit the land and the human soul. So it is no surprise that past and current residents of Wright’s homes all express a feeling of mindfulness and being present in the moment while living under his roofs, as the structures truly become one with nature. Wright’s homes are recognizable by their low-pitched roofs, overhanging eaves, horizontal lines, central chimney, open floor plans and clerestory windows. Wright was a prolifi , controversial and inspiring architect during his lifetime and lucky for us his unique and enduring style is still followed and revered today. Frank Lloyd Wright has been quoted as saying, “Study nature, love nature, stay close to nature. It will never fail you.” Throughout this issue we share just how important nature is to all of us living in the greater St. Louis area. Dick Busch, Dick Busch Architects, and Dean Teiber of Teiber Construction Company work in conjunction with a West County couple to give birth to a beautiful Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired home in Wildwood on pages 34 –43. I think Wright would be proud. A few of Frank Lloyd Wright's quotes for your own inspiration… “The good building is not one that hurts the landscape, but one which makes the landscape more beautiful than it was before the building was built.” “A building is not just a place to be but a way to be.” “The best friend on earth of man is the tree: When we use the tree respectfully and economically, we have one of the greatest resources of the earth.” “If you wisely invest in beauty, it will remain with you all the days of your life.” Enjoy! slhl STYLE MAKER

Anne Boedges, PRESIDENT AND DESIGNER OF

Anne Marie Design Studio, IS BRIMMING WITH BATH KNOWLEDGE.

THE LOWDOWN ON BATHROOM REMODELING SLHL: How do you help homeowners come up with a bath design they are seeking? Anne: First, I learn about the client and who is using the space. Then, I genuinely listen to them… their dream spaces, their “Pinterests,” what they envision and I ask what functionality is missing for them in the space. I try to drive each project by the client’s needs. SLHL: When doing a complete remodel, what selections does a homeowner need to make first Anne: The most important portion of this process is the layout. Once that’s determined, we review and select which cabinetry works best for the project with regards to budget, color, available storage and sizes, quality level and lead time. Next, we select tile/floo ing materials and countertops, as well as the metal finishe . SLHL: Before starting construction, is it a requirement to have all selections made and purchased? Anne: Absolutely, 100 percent, yes! It makes everyone’s job SO much easier. However, I’m not impossible to work with, and I realize that paint color and cabinet hardware could wait just a hair and are a little more personal choices for the client that can’t be made until they are in the space. So, those are about the only two items I will be lenient with if it works. SLHL: What is an unexpected expense you can run into when remodeling a bathroom? Anne: The most common unexpected costs we’ve run into would be mold that was hidden, not having appropriate insulation in the walls and having to replace a rotted subfloo . These are all labor expenses. If we only had x-ray vision, we could foresee so much more!

18

EDITED BY MELISSA MAUZY PHOTOGRAPHY BY COLIN MILLER/STRAUSS PEYTON

SLHL: What are alternatives to glass doors in a shower or tub? Anne: I recently have had more clients asking for walk-in showers and bathtubs with shower curtains to add a pop of color or pattern. What I like about the shower curtains is that it does make a bathroom look softer and have fewer echoes. If you like the look of custom glass and seeing the gorgeous tiled designs in your shower, there is an option for clients to get an EnduroShield treatment applied to glass at the factory. It acts as a wax filling in pores on the glass surface, making it much easier to keep clean. Plus it has a 10-year warranty on it. SLHL: How do you determine what kind of lighting and how many lights you need in a bathroom? Anne: You can’t have too much lighting! I like using a “5-inch recessed can light spaced every 5 feet on an 8-foot ceiling” method. It gives great overhead and task lighting. I always light a shower or bathtub using a water-safe recessed can light. Recently, I’ve been using the new can light/exhaust fan product by Broan. Then comes the ambient lighting. I love wall sconces! If there is room along the length of the vanity, I will put recessed canned lights over the sinks, and put wall sconces on each side of the mirrors. If not, I will put a two-or three-light fi ture over the mirror. SLHL: What trends are you seeing in sinks? Anne: Hammered stainless steel has become very popular recently. It goes great with the gray and white trend, as well as other tones. It complements a lot of faucet styles and finishe , and it adds another jewelry element. Plus, it doesn’t tarnish like polished or hammered nickel may do.

slhl ARTIST

IN OPEN AIR En plein air artist Shawn Cornell paints beautiful landscapes completely on location. BY TYLER BIERMAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY COLIN MILLER/STRAUSS PEYTON

20

There's a saying that local en plein air artist Shawn Cornell has coined as a way of explaining his craft and it goes like this, “If you see snow in the painting, it means the artist was standing in snow. If you see rain in the painting, it means the artist was getting very wet.” That's the medium of en plein air in a nutshell. It's the process of painting your subject on location in the open air, whether it's rain or shine or even snow. Traditionally, up to 75 percent of a painting must be completed outdoors to be considered, but Cornell takes that tradition a step further by completing his work 100 percent on location. So, how did Cornell become such an artistic purist? The answer to that question begins way back in childhood with the help of his father. “When he came home from work he would paint and—as a way to get us interested— he would draw a little character or something and we would try to duplicate it,” Cornell explains. Since then, Cornell has always been an artist—first striving to receive a higher education in fine art, then pursuing a career in graphic design, all

AUGUST 2016 STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM

ARTIST_0816.indd 20

7/12/16 11:20 AM

the way up to the year 2000 when he finally picked up a paint brush. A couple of years later, he knew for sure that this was his calling and what his next step had to be. “In 2002, I gave my employers at Paradowski Creative a fi e-year notice. From then on, I would go to art fairs and workshops, constantly honing my skills. Then finally in 2007—right on schedule—I took the leap to become a full-time artist,” he says. Nowadays when he's not working art fairs and exhibitions, he still finds time to bond with his father over art. “Every Sunday I'm still out painting with my dad,” Cornell says. As for Cornell's process, it's actually rather simple. “I go out and find something that inspires me,” he says. “I do a quick sketch on the canvas and then I paint. They say painting is all about putting the color in the right place, so that's what I try to do.” And that's indeed what he does. Each brush stroke is a mixture of precision and spontaneity. Then there's his distinct dedication to 100 percent completion on

location. Some might call it obsessive, but Cornell assures us it's all about the challenge. “It's really something that I want to see that I can do. To take a raw piece of whatever, go outside and come back in with a finished piece of a twork,” he says. Another defining factor about Cornell is his affin y for painting the wide-open landscapes and industrial history of the Midwest. “My wife and I head out to Colorado to paint the mountains, rivers and pine trees, but after two weeks it all looks the same to me and I'm itching to get back to St. Louis. There's a lot of people that think to find beautiful landscapes you have to look on the coasts and there's nothing in between, which is unbelievable to me,” Cornell explains. The best way to keep up with Cornell's appearances and exhibitions is to keep an eye on his website. See www.stlouishomesmag.com for more photos and resources.

The Design Source More than 200 square feet

HEAD-TO-TOE REDESIGN

An outdated bath needed a head-to-toe redesign, and The Design Source was just the fi m to update this luxurious space. Top priority to the homeowners was removing an expansive built-in tub and tub surround along with large columns. Adding an oversized steam shower, freestanding tub and double vanity with a highly functional custom makeup vanity and stunning glass-door cabinets complete the transformation. The custom cabinetry is totally tricked out with practical and impressive storage inside. In the glass cabinets flan ing the freestanding tub, the client displays one-of-a-kind treasures. Designed to frame the lemon-slice window, the cabinetry creates a design detail that was once outdated in the original bath. Honed marble counters, porcelain vessel sinks and brushed bronze plumbing fin shes complement the existing ceiling fixture while adding a chic flair to the space. This bath is a little bohemian with touches of contemporary panache set free by custom cabinetry that is so gorgeous it defies desc iption.

Why the judges love it:

This doesn’t feel like a bathroom. It has such style. The storage cabinet is heaven! The bath has a custom feel, and the floo plan is fantastic. PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANNE MATHEIS.

ELEGANT, TIMELESS DESIGN

With visions of a luxury master bathroom that was also executed with occupant health in mind, the homeowners turned to designer David Schneider of Schneider Kennedy to complete the project. Along with indoor air quality and health concerns, the homeowners’ list of wants included a freestanding tub, large shower, separate water closet and respect to the original architecture of the home. The biggest challenges were building a bathroom in a 112-year-old home where one had never existed as well as finding a contractor that could follow the regulations, laws and protocols to protect human health. All the materials in the home are vetted, and protocols were created to meet and exceed guidelines for hazards such as lead paint and asbestos. The tile is all porcelain to avoid the need for sealing. The cabinetry was locally built and finished with low-emitting materials, and all the sealants, adhesives and caulks used were low or no VOCs as were primers and paints. Aesthetically, the bathroom integrates the iconic St. Louis Fleur de lis.

Why the judges love it:

This beautifully designed bathroom is not over the top. We love the curved cabinetry and curved wainscoting panel. The tile detail is great, especially the way the designer incorporated the fleur de li . The little pop of dark in the light floor tile ca ries the detail throughout the space. MASTERING THE DETAILS

The entire master bathroom remodel was designed to the detail by Castle Design to be both functional and beautiful. The challenge the designer faced was that the size and shape of the space of the bath in the historic Clayton residence couldn’t be modifie . Thoughtful and creative planning transformed the space into a more functional master bath. The designer removed the unused tub allowing ample space to create the ideal luxury shower, which features marble finishes and state-of-the-art fi tures. Taking full advantage of every square inch, a custom built-in linen cabinet adds much needed storage. The vanity is a stunning showpiece with its custom mirrored front. Polished fi tures and hardware add a bit of sparkle. On the floo , Thassos, a pure white marble, is paired with iridescent Rivershell in a hand-laid basket weave. Classic clean lines and symmetry make this marble-lined master bath in perfect harmony.

Why the judges love it:

All elements of this bath design are pulled through nicely. It is so simple yet sophisticated, sleek and clean. We love how the splash of blue tile in the shower matches the wall color. The stone shower bench is beautiful and functional. PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALISE O’BRIEN.

LUMINOUS POWDER ROOM

This small powder room can’t help but catch your eye. The luminous radiance makes a small space sparkle. The refle tion of the tile wall and the antiqued mirrors on the vanity drawers give depth to the space, while the wood floor and vanity add textural contrast. A touch of glimmer comes from the metallic silver paint on the wooden mullions on the mirrored vanity drawer fronts as well as the border on the top and bottom of the vanity. To highlight each detail of the small powder room, designers K-Build Design selected lighting that provides sparkling illumination. Three-piece crown molding was used to soften the feel and add a tone of elegance.

Why the judges love it:

The designers of this powder room packed a lot of sparking in a little space. So glam! The rustic feel of the wood floor against the spa kle of the tile is a great balance. PHOTOGRAPHY BY WIDE EYE PHOTOGRAPHY.

PEACEFUL RETREAT

After 25 years in their home, the owners decided to gut their master suite. Desiring a clean, peaceful space to retreat, they worked with designer Nancy Barrett, Beautiful Rooms, LLC, to create the space of their dreams. A fresh, patterned fabric set the natural color palette of gold, white and gray. For a more open look, the wall that enclosed the commode was removed and a wall-hung vanity was specifie . Multiple tile choices, in shades of gray, were applied to the floor and shower pan to create stripes on the shower walls and tub splash. The variety of tile and quartz surfaces make the monochromatic bones of the room interesting while keeping a clean look. Sparkle was added in the light fixtures and crystal embedded wallcovering on the vanity wall. Accent towels and accessories in gold complete the look.

Why the judges love it:

RUSTIC RETREAT

Located in a rustic area, this master bath captures the natural setting while providing all the modern comforts. Designer Mark Dysart, Marc Christian Fine Cabinetry, added wood paneling and beams to warm up the visual look of the space, while heated flooring enhances physical comfort. The vanity mirrors were built by first building 3 deep framework. LED lighting tape was applied to the frame, then the stacked stone tile backsplash was installed. The mirrors were overlaid on the stone to look as if they are floatin . Flat mosaic pebble tiles are on the shower floor and around the tub, and round pebble tile accents the shower detail. Alder cabinetry was used for the vanities. A freestanding, customized linen cabinet provides ample storage. The freestanding tub sits in front of large, wood-framed windows for the ultimate outdoor viewing. The main shower was created out of a previous closet area with a main showerhead and hand shower added and placed to be accessible from the built-in seat. The master bath is warm, rich and comfortable in the surrounding environment.

Why the judges love it:

We can picture ourselves taking a bath in this space and relaxing. The beams the designer added are so cool, and the stacked stone is gorgeous. We love how the mirrors are hung on the stacked stone. PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANNE MATHEIS.

Dashing Design by Elizabeth Kavlok More than 200 square feet

SEPARATE, BUT TOGETHER

With 260 square feet to work with, this couple had plenty of space to create a master bath with separate spaces while still being together. Designer Elizabeth Kavlok, Dashing Design, created a shower for two, a tub for two and a vanity for two to give the couple exactly what they desired. Access to the master bath through the walk-in closet allows for everyday grooming and day prep to be done within their own spaces. The husband has his own private water closet, while the wife has an extensive makeup dressing vanity. Straight lines and dark features give a masculine feel, while soft waves and curves and shiny accents brings in a touch of glam. The vanity island is a unique approach with one long bowl and two separate faucets as well as a double-sided mirror and pendant lights. Dimensional tile both inside and outside the bath makes an impression on the plumbing wall. The shower seat extends from the shower to outside for extra space.

ative grasses line the winding drive and sway in the near-three-digit heat. A sunburst of black-eyed Susan daisies backs to the dense forest encircling the residence. With its low profil , all-stone exterior, gently sloping rooflines and cantilevered terraces, the 7,200-square-foot structure harmonizes beautifully with its glorious setting. An unobtrusive walkway leads to the recessed entrance, which is marked by a massive cut-limestone lintel and a spectacular art glass window – instantly recognizable as Frank Lloyd Wright’s renowned Lake Geneva Tulip pattern. Stepping through the “hidden” entry door, there’s virtually no sense of transition, except for the now-pleasant temperature. Vast banks of windows bathe the spaces in natural light and blur the distinction between indoors and outdoors. Twelve-foot ceilings, raised still higher in certain areas, enhance the spatial volume. Interior walls are blanketed with the same natural Missouri limestone as the exterior, and rich-hued white oak floo ing and millwork provide a warm contrast. This seamless organic effect is precisely what the homeowners and architect Dick Busch set out to achieve when designing this extraordinary Wright-inspired haven, situated on seven heavily wooded acres in Wildwood.

36

Now retired, the husband is the former executive of a consumer packaged goods company. “For some time, we’d been looking for a secluded, natural setting – a place where we could retreat with family and friends,” he explains. The “boundary-less” property, surrounded by hundreds of acres of wooded parkland, proved ideal and was purchased in 2008. There was never any question about the architectural styling of the couple’s future sanctuary either. Married for 43 years, they’d lived in fi e states and raised their family in a variety of traditional homes. “But both of us have always loved the clean, uncluttered lines of Wright’s designs and his use of glass, wood and stone,” says the wife. Over the years, they’d toured and photographed the legendary architect’s residential projects throughout the Midwest, researching and

assembling a comprehensive list of their favorite elements, which they humorously refer to as “the best of Frank Lloyd Wright.” Similar care went into the owners’ choice of a local architect. After interviewing several, they chose Busch in 2012, and the design process was completed in just four months. With scrupulous attention to preserving the gorgeous terrain, a minimal amount of land was cleared, and the foundation was dug in early 2013. (An interesting side note, 800 truckloads of the rock and dirt removed were transported to the Chesterfield site where the Premium Outlet Mall was under construction.) Twelve wells, each 180 feet deep, were bored for installation of the three geothermal systems and, under the watchful eye of custom builder Dean Teiber, Teiber Construction Co., the owners’ vision was transformed into reality. “We enjoyed

working with Dean on this project," the husband says. "He and his team's work are outstanding. Plus, the workmen loved the serenity here, and they hated to leave.” But by July of 2014, the home was ready for move-in. Although fully open, the main-level activity areas are well-defined and fl w artfully from one to another. Wright’s design principles dominate the interior, with finely crafted banding and clerestory windows emphasizing the horizontal lines and natural materials establishing continuity. Through walls of glass, every space provides a different view, and the built-in custom cabinetry designed by Teiber, shelving and trimwork are all quarter-sawn or rift-cut white oak, often laid in distinctive geometric patterns. Seven imposing fi eplaces, all variations of Wright designs, are located in various areas throughout the home. The pièce de résistance, however, is a see-through fireplace set in the freestanding limestone wall that anchors and separates the living and dining rooms. Surmounting the living room mantel is a dazzling, semi-circular, 400-pound bronze sculpture, derived from Wright’s iconic fi eplace in the Hotel Geneva and superbly fabricated by Eureka Forge. Open to the living/dining area, the spacious island kitchen — a 2016 Platinum award winner by Gegg Design & Cabinetry, featured in SLHL’s January issue — is the one notable departure from typical Wright floor plans. “Wright's designs didn’t focus on kitchens,” the husband quips. “In his era, kitchens weren’t as important as they are today, and he focused more on the dining rooms.” Nevertheless, this kitchen incorporates the same authentic Prairie-style design elements and natural materials as the rest of

Plants flou ish in the light-filled sunroom, which features a unique “layered” wood ceiling that Teiber designed in collaboration with the homeowners, limestone walls and textured stone floor tiles. Highlighted by a geometric pattern in wood, the majestic stone fireplace is actually two-sided, gas fueled in the sunroom and wood-burning in the adjacent, open-air patio room. In spite of the heat, a tour of the patio room is irresistible. Overlooking the expansive pool deck, this outdoor entertainment space is as luxurious as the interior, with an oak plank ceiling, decorative concrete floo ing and streamlined

Brazilian ipe wood furniture. Returning to the foyer, the vestibule soars dramatically to 30 feet, with classic 9-lite windows lighting the clerestory. Off the foyer, the library showcases another full-height limestone fireplace and the only two pieces of representational art in the home. Both are commissioned paintings – deer and a red fox by wildlife artist Ryan Kirby – again, bringing the outdoors inside. Or for a breath of fresh air, a cantilevered terrace is accessible from the library and offers spectacular treetop views of the surrounding landscape. The owners’ privacy suite is also located in this wing; a guest suite in the opposing wing completes the main-floor layout; and two additional bedrooms are provided on the finished lower level.

Consistent with Wright’s interior design philosophy, all of the furnishings were acquired specifically for this home and are clean-lined, predominantly earth-toned and meticulously chosen to complement and focus attention on the architectural aesthetics. Similarly authentic, Oakbrook Esser Studios, working in partnership with the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, was licensed to reproduce the Tulip pattern featured in the art glass entry window, kitchen, and stately entrance gates. Subtle yet sensational, this brilliantly designed residence is as integral to its environment as the towering trees and lush foliage – a sublime refuge for the owners and a worthy tribute to one of America’s most influential architects. ou’ve seen his talents at The Muny and at Straub’s grocery stores, and he’s all over the Warson Woods Antique Mall. But Rand Rosenthal’s talents have nothing to do with song and dance or promoting a tasty morsel or two. As head of the Rand Rosenthal Design Group, Rand creates beautiful horticultural accents and gardens both for public spaces and in countless front and back yards throughout St. Louis. He also sells both plants and antiques at the Warson Woods site. When he returns home to his own garden, which he shares with his wife Karen, he looks for peace, tranquility and being “as close to nature as possible.” Tucked in a quiet corner of Webster Groves, Rand had his eye on the home and garden long before it came on the market. The dry-stacked stone wall that surrounds the 1/3-acre lot and the charming, cottage-style home appealed to his love of rustic antiques. Rand also took in the good bones provided by the natural slope of the property, interior stone work and pathways and the remnants of interesting plant material left by a former horticulturist homeowner, even though most of it was covered by weedy honeysuckle, mulberry and junk trees. In the 16 years Rand has owned the property, he has not only cleared the land, but he has created two streams and three ponds, all separate from each other, and surrounded them with what he calls “a melting pot of a garden” that is as fluid as the st eams that connect the outdoor spaces. His most recent addition is the third large pond just off the front porch that allows him and Karen to actually view the water from the house as well as hearing the sound of the stream. Five years ago, he created what he calls a “landing area” beside another pond just inside the home’s side gate. It’s a relaxing space filled with outdoor easy chairs and couches and a fi e pit created from a huge Polynesian, wok-style caldron originally used for stir-frying large amounts of food. With an old, exotic packing crate used as an end table, the seating area refle ts Rand's love of vintage furniture and accessories and his talent for repurposing antique items in unusual ways. Garden basics include reliables such as oak leaf hydrangeas, which he loves for the scent as well as the fl wers and fall color; native "Annabelle" hydrangeas; late-fl wering "Tardiva" hydrangeas, and winterberry for its bright fruit, which adds winter color. He’s also partial to big-leaved hostas, such as flo escent green "Guacamole" and the monstrously large, moss-green, circular leaves of the gunnera that was on the property when he arrived.

But nothing is static. “I change the garden every year,” he notes. “Things are moved around and re-arranged.” In addition, a healthy dose of tropical plants keeps everything looking fresh and can bring a new look to the garden from year to year. This year’s favorite tropicals include an upright, narrow-leaved croton with strong fuchsia tones, called "Mammy;" hot pink cordyline or Hawaiian ti plant; a multicolored hibiscus (featured at Straub’s stores); a green-and-purple-speckled elephant ear, and a bold Chinese fan palm. He considers them landscape “thrillers” because of their bold colors and architectural shapes. He also loves succulents for their durability, easy care and the additional dimensions of unusual shapes and interesting textures they bring to the garden. He tucks them into a variety of unexpected places from the ends of dead logs to rusty lanterns. When his daughter Lindsay, who is being married in August, asked to use the garden as the venue for a bridal shower, Rand created table centerpieces filled with a variety of succulents. “We pulled out all the stops,” he says, beaming like a proud dad. “I like to think outside the box,” when it comes to plant material, he adds, noting that he has contacts with growers in Florida and California and makes regular trips with an empty truck that he drives back to St. Louis filled with new and different plant introductions to the delight of his customers. “At The Muny, I always try to do something that is unusual; that will open people’s eyes up to what is out there. I love it when people touch the foxtail fern or take pictures of the plantings.” When it comes to decorating his garden with things other than plant material, Rand also likes to think outside the box. “I like objects worn with time,” he says. That’s why there is a small windmill rising from a garden border. “I love the movement when there is a breeze,” he explains. He also has incorporated a well-worn oxen yoke, an old soil tiller and stone boudoir-style chairs from a St. Louis estate into the landscape and

created a garden shed from old barn wood. He has been known to design plantings around an old bicycle and to “upholster” a dilapidated couch with succulents and pumpkins. Weathered wood in the form of old tree trumps and fallen logs become planters and architectural objects. “I love to add pieces of wood to the garden because I want everything to look as natural as possible,” he explains. When he begins a landscape, “I always like to have a painter’s palette of plants,” Rand says. “It could be tropicals, succulents, die-hard perennials and interesting annuals. I like to have everything at my disposal. Then, I can play with them and see how they work together.” Just as he “likes to think outside the box” Rand urges home gardeners to do the same. “We have wonderful, independent nurseries here with great and unusual plant material. They can provide good advice to gardeners and show them interesting things.” He also urges homeowners to “read up” on what they are planting and pay attention to sun, shade and moisture requirements. For additional inspiration, he suggests simply strolling through the Missouri Botanical Garden. “It’s a great outlet for learning,” he says. ROCK

“Bring bright color to your landscapes with Lime Twister Stonecrop, Sedum. A compact grower, its apple-green foliage is edged in creamy white. Hot-pink flowers appear in late summer and fall. Wonderful in masses or groups, and as a weed-smothering ground cover, Lime Twister resists deer and rabbits and thrives in hot, sunny, dry areas.” Ann Lapides, Sugar Creek Gardens.

If you’re tired of watering the lawn, switch up grass for rocks with a modern rock garden. Appreciate their natural, rugged beauty, plus they are low maintenance. SLHL asked local landscapers to share their favorite plants for rock gardens.

BY MELISSA MAUZY

“My favorite rock garden plant is Talinum calycinum, or Rock Pink. It is a Missouri native that only grows 6-12" tall and 12" wide. It has hot-pink fl wers that bloom all summer. It will also seed itself to form small colonies.” Cathy Pauley, Papillon Perennials.

54

“Rock gardens call for some sort of creeping or spreading plant to cascade and meander through the boulders. A low-maintenance option is also key in a rock garden so the caretaker does not need to clamber around the boulders to prune and care for the plants. My favorite plant to use in a rock garden is Ajuga. Not only does it allow the boulders to stand out against the dark foliage, but there also is a great contrast between the structure of the boulders and the soft texture of the plant material.” Katy Molaskey, Green Guys.

“Chamaecyparis is a versatile plant that lends itself to a rock garden for multiple reasons. From a health standpoint, the Chamaecyparis doesn’t require a significant amount of water, thus doing well in rock gardens, which can be a dryer environment where root systems tend to be warmer. When tucked against a boulder or planted in a rock garden, it creates soft lines in the landscape creating balance and visual interest.” Jim Graeler, Chesterfield Valley Nursery.

“Sedum plants rock my rock-garden world any day of the week. With seemingly endless varieties to choose from, interesting leaf and flower colors and amazing texture, how can you go wrong with these succulents? For some red-leaf color try ‘Dazzleberry’ Sedum. For a hardy reliability try Packy Sedum ‘Kamtschaticum’. For a taller Sedum try ‘Frosty Morn’ or ‘Autumn Joy’. Whatever you choose, you will get an interesting, water-wise plant!” Christine Knoernschild, Passiglia’s Nursery.

TOWER GROVE HOUSE

The Tower Grove House, Garden founder Henry Shaw’s restored country residence, is located in the Lichtenstein Victorian District. After an extremely successful business venture, Shaw retired and made several trips back to Europe. After his first trip, he was inspired to make St. Louis his permanent home. In 1849, he commissioned George I. Barnett, an English-born architect and friend, to design the Tower Grove House. The building is Barnett’s first design with an Italianate influenc , a style popular among Americans who traveled to Europe in the Victorian era. The name Tower Grove House was inspired by the house’s significant tower, which overlooks a grove of oak and sassafras trees. Inspired by his last trip in 1851, Shaw decided to build a garden around his country estate, later becoming the Missouri Botanical Garden. See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

BY LORRAINE RAGUSEO PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF QUINTESSENTIAL WINES

Nature’s Way It

was once common that the majority of smaller vintners were farmers whose grape vines shared acreage with orchards, olive groves and even fields with corn, wheat and vegetables. Horses, cows, pigs and chickens might be roaming the grounds. In other words, a working farm. As winemaking became big business, the vines took precedence, and the vast majority of multi-crop farms disappeared, especially in the major wine regions of the world. Today, with the increasing popularity of the farm-to-table movement among restaurants and chefs, and the increasingly common conversion of land to organic and sustainable farming practices, some wineries are returning to their farm roots, especially in less well-known wine regions. Nowhere is that more evident than in the Alentejo – a region between Lisbon and the southern coast in Southeast Portugal – that is considered the hottest part of Europe, with summer temperatures often exceeding 100 degrees and the climate varying from hot-summer Mediterranean to semi-arid. Long known as Portugal’s bread basket, it has vast open countrysides with undulating plains and rich, fertile soil. With very few exceptions, all the major towns are mainly reliant on agriculture, livestock and forestry. Many of the properties in this region are called herdades – homestead or large farm in English. Vines are an increasingly common site in the most fertile parts of

the region, mainly in Redondo (near the foothills of the Serra D’Ossa Mountains, in a southwestern section of the Alentejo) and Evora, which is largely flat plains. This region is also home to an ancillary, but key ingredient in wine production – vast cork tree forests, many of which have been growing in the area for over 300 years. It is the combination of vast cork forests and vineyards that brought people with farming backgrounds to this region. Among them, in 1977, was Alexandre and Cristina Relvas. Cristina’s family has a viticultural background going back three generations – her grandfather was one of the most famous viticulturists in the Beira region of Northern Portugal. Alexandre’s family were farmers, also for three generations, cultivating mostly wheat and raising chickens for sale, in Angola, the African nation that was a Portuguese colony until 1975. The young couple had lived in Lisbon for a number of years, but long wanted to return to their shared agricultural heritages, as well as have a second home where they could plant some vineyards to make top-quality wines and start a forest of cork trees. They bought land in the Redondo area that was already called Herdade Sao Miguel. The trees came first in the late 1990s and then, in 2001, the Relvas planted vineyards (mostly with the traditional red Portuguese grape varieties such as Aragones, Alicante Bouschet, Touriga Nacional and Trincadeira, and

some white grapes like Antao Vaz, Arinto and Verdelho). A state-of-the-art winery followed in 2003, with the first bottles of Herdade Sao Miguel Red Wine coming to market in 2004. In less than 20 years, Alexandre and Cristina created a successful cork business, now with over 247 acres of cork trees they own, and another 1,850 acres of cork and pine forests they manage, vineyards and a winery producing the award-winning and highly-rated labels Herdade Sao Miguel and Herdade de Pimenta. If that weren’t enough, they also own approximately 400 female sheep used for breeding purposes. Both of their sons are working with them on the winemaking side – Alexandre Relvas, Jr. as chief winemaker, and his younger brother Antonio. Like many of their neighbors, who are making fin , artisanal wines alongside other specialized agricultural pursuits such as raising prized Portuguese blackfooted pigs or special breeds of cattle that are revered for their tender meat, the Relvas family approaches everything they do with a great respect for the natural way. That extends to their table, which is often laden with the gourmet bounty of their own land and that of the surrounding farms, as well as fresh fish from the long Atlantic Ocean coast into which the Alentejo’s Western border spills. Here, the real meaning of farm-to-table is evident in the cheeses and chorizo sausages made down the road, the breads baked daily in

the local town’s bakery, the olive oil and honey that doesn’t travel more than a few kilometers from the Relvas dining-room table. While cod, in all its variations (salted, stewed, grilled), is Portugal’s national fish, farmers in the Alentejo favor local seafood stews cooked in a Cataplana, a unique clam-like pot. Traditionally, local fishes are combined with saff on, sorrel and, sometimes, white wine or vermouth. The cover is not removed until the pan reaches the table, emitting intensely fragrant aromas that are nearly as satisfying as the first fork-and-spoon full. If making this dish at home here in St. Louis, an array of clams, shrimp and other shellfish, as well as fi m-fleshed fish like monkfish or sea bass, can be added. While a bit harder to fill one’s table with local bounty when that table is in a large city, the number of farmer’s markets (especially in summer) and gourmet shops bringing local agricultural products to city-dwellers, is growing. And the city’s wine merchants, carrying exquisite wines such as those made by the Relvas family from up-and-coming wine regions like Portugal’s Alentejo, make it easier to enjoy the farm-to-table experience here at home. BY BARBARA E. STEFÀNO PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALISE O’BRIEN

Town & Country Style Scenery, serenity and seamless function feature prominently in this St. Louis County home. To the husband and wife, the master bathroom in their Town and Country home was uninspired and sometimes even unfriendly, lacking privacy and functionality for them, their four children and occasional visitors. It’s a large space, but it had no enclosure for the toilet. Two tub-side columns, while attractive, blocked a beautiful outdoor view and made the room feel close. And the overall design didn’t address potential changes in mobility. So, the couple worked closely with bath designer/general contractor Dana Dunbar of Lorrien Homes, interior designer Tom Manche of Tom Manche Interiors and architect Donna Boxx to rejuvenate what

the wife describes as a “tired-looking” room. Dana’s first task was to open up the area, both physically and visually. The columns came out. The shower expanded. Two small closets became one big one, thanks to the sacrifice of an adjacent bar that got more use as vacuum cleaner storage than a social hub. “We found that we were doing all our entertaining in the kitchen and not really getting a lot of use out of [the bar],” says the wife. “We don’t even miss it.” Using principles of universal design, Dana reconfigu ed the space for easier maneuverability, concentrating storage lower on the wall to make it more accessible. Grab bars and handle pulls are in easy reach, and a larger door eases the transition into the room, whether by foot or wheelchair. Tom updated the existing blue-green walls and white cabinetry with a pale blue-and-white scheme. A contrasting lime green ottoman adds a pop of warmth in the center of the room. “I love the freshness

64

of the space. It beckons you,” he says. “I love the shower with a focal tile feature running down the center of the back wall and the patterned glass door. The large window is magnificent and treated with a blue fabric that frames the trees and lawns beyond.” Also integral to the look is thoughtful, “layered” lighting on dimmers. After making way for ambient light from a large window by the soaker tub, Dana added “work area” lighting in places like the shower and mirrors to facilitate daily tasks. The finishing lighting touches came in the form of decorative chandeliers that hang on the apex beam and over the tub. The wife admits to spending more time these days luxuriating in the master bath, enjoying the natural light, heated tub, spacious shower and ample storage. “The heated tile, that’s probably our favorite thing. The bathroom could get cold in the winter, but I didn’t even realize how much I was going to appreciate it.” See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

ou’re familiar with the whirlpool tub – the Jacuzzi – of course, and you might be privy to air baths, too. Allow us to introduce you to the next big thing in bathing: developed by Georgia-based MTI Baths, Stream Bath invites users to experience a soak in the great outdoors — without ever leaving home. As its name suggests, Stream Bath mimics the relaxing feeling of wading into placid waters, with vent-propelled currents that look, sound and

AUGUST 2016 STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM

feel every bit as soothing as a forest stream. “The Stream Bath is as nature intended – thoughtful and awakening to the senses, yet gentle and relaxing,” explains Russell Adams, president of MTI Baths, an award-winning, employee-owned company making handcrafted products right here in America. Stream Bath seems straightforward, but the concept represents a big move for the industry, Adams continues. It’s Stream Bath’s vents – distinct from jets – that deliver an unparalleled soaking experience. Outlets located at the ends of the tub subtly push water toward bathers, while angled and rotatable side vents allow for a customizable soak with unique fl w patterns that can be guided toward areas of focus. The tub has been popular with aging clients, true; it’s also appropriate for anyone with circulation issues, and folks looking for general pain relief, explains Erin Sweeney, showroom designer at Crescent Plumbing Supply Co., currently the sole St. Louis supplier of MTI’s Stream Bath. Air doesn’t mix with water released from the bath’s vents; as a result directional currents emerge, then, without turbulence or bubbles – though, bathers looking for a more effervescent experience can simply point the side vents upward. “I find that the Stream Bath is quieter than other therapy tubs,” Sweeney says, pointing to a pump that’s intentionally muted to enhance an overall rejuvenating, spa-like ambiance. An optional inline heater maintains water temperature at 104 degrees for long-term bathing. MTI’s latest line of therapy products proves functionality and performance needn’t compromise style. Stream Bath comes in traditional, transitional and contemporary models in multiple shapes and sizes, making it versatile and compatible with most existing bathrooms. The tub can be used in either a drop-in or under-mount installation; the latter, Sweeney notes, is becoming increasingly popular for its ease of entry. Speaking of practical, cleaning the Stream Bath is a breeze given its gravity-fed plumbing system. “It’s a very low maintenance product,” Sweeney says. “Pricewise,” she adds, “Stream Baths are comparable to a whirlpool or air bath, and they aren’t any more expensive to install.” MTI Director of Marketing Michael Kornowa clarifie , “We have it priced at approximately the same cost as our standard whirlpool. What we wanted to do was create the ultimate soaking tub, and price it attractively.” Mission accomplished. See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

HOMETOWN HIDEAWAY RELAXING AT THIS WELDON SPRING POOL HOUSE IS LIKE TAKING A TRIP TO A RUSTIC RETREAT. BY LAUREN ST. JOHN PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALISE O’BRIEN

When you step foot into Jeff and Reagan Parrish’s back yard, you are transported out of the local landscape and into a family-friendly, lodge-like oasis. Natural stone steps on either side of a man-made stream lead to a picturesque pool, which serves as the backdrop for a two-story pool house that has become a hometown hideaway for the avid entertainers and their growing brood. With convenience and functionality in mind, the homeowners teamed up with Lori Olsen McElvain of Castle Design to create the 1,664-square-foot alfresco retreat. “We wanted a space that would allow us and our guests to enjoy the outdoors and have access to the amenities that you would usually find indoors,” says Jeff. Massive folding glass doors span the width of three of the pool house’s four sides, extending the social hotspot’s usability to seasons far beyond summer while showcasing the details and comforts inside. The other wall makes just as grand of a statement with a kitchen perfect for a master chef, which is fittin , as Jeff is the owner of Quintessential Dining and Night Life. An outdoor grill, a must-have for the food-loving family, sits underneath a 110-inch copper mantel hood that was exclusively designed for the space. A wood-fi e pizza oven, flat op griddle and spacious refrigerator help to make the sophisticated sanctuary feel like a true extension of the Parrish’s home. “The custom metal and woodwork by Next Level Metal is what really gives the pool house a unique, rustic edge,” mentions Lori. Solid Douglas Fur ceiling rafters are accented with handmade steel rivets to complement the casual light fixtures, including a wine barrel STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM AUGUST 2016

stave chandelier, that shine light on the versatile seating and bar area. A dining table made from reclaimed wood pairs effortlessly with a weather-resistant, restaurant-style booth, which stands up to post-swimming snacking. “We added a 120-inch movie screen to one of the residence's basement windows, so it was challenging to figu e out how to incorporate ample seating into the upper level of the pool house while being careful to not obstruct anyone’s view,” Lori explains. Pebble and stone playfully cover the floors and walls, while slate and speckled-gray granite make an appearance on the bar, helping the cozy cabin-inspired space to be resilient to wear and tear. A steel, spiral staircase, clad in artful metal flourishes, extends past a stunning bathroom and deck into the lower level, which boasts a movie theater, wine cellar and additional room for storage and hosting friends and family. “There’s nothing more comfortable than being at home, so why not have your own back yard be your favorite travel destination,” laughs Jeff. Mixing neutral colors, masculine metals and a laid-back design style, hanging out at the Parrish pool house is the epitome of a sublime staycation. See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

Located near Paso Robles, CA, Law Winery sits on 55 acres with full panorama views of the estate hilltop, Paso Robles and the coastal ridge. The floor plan supports the small-lot production and experimentation with non-traditional varietals of an anticipated 10,000 cases of wine. To make visiting the winery an extraordinary experience, the design team at Bar Architects studied the property’s slopes and ridge line to take advantage of the indoor/outdoor spaces, barrel caves and views.

IS IT A CLASSIC OR IS IT A CRAZE? SHOWER BODY SPRAYS For our August Bath issue, we asked local design professionals their opinion on SHOWER BODY SPRAYS. Are homeowners still opting for the luxury bath experience? Or is all the extra water just washing down the drain? BY MELISSA MAUZY

CLASSIC

“Shower body sprays are a fading classic. They certainly aren’t going anywhere, and the plumbing manufacturers still offer them and are even offering new improvements to them. However, they are not nearly requested for as they once were. Years ago they were almost expected to consider any shower a “custom” shower. Now homeowners want simplicity – in regards to both aesthetics and performance. Also, with the millennial movement, homeowners are more conscious of their water intake and are less wasteful in general. We have also noticed that homeowners are more open to spending their shower budgets on other spa-like features, for example, steam and music.” Betsy Hayden, Premier Plumbing Studio. “I have been designing with body sprays for well over 20 years, so I would not consider it a craze. If a client has legitimate back or muscle issues, they can be well worth the investment. I describe it then as a vertical whirlpool. Placement is crucial. I will keep selling them for any client who needs the therapy.” Jennifer Trentadue, Henry Plumbing Kitchen and Bath Gallery. “In response to new trends in bathroom design, shower body sprays are a classic. The newest progression is multi-body spray shower systems, which are quickly becoming all the rave. Those with demanding lifestyles are looking for sanctuaries, a spa like environment for therapeutic relaxation and rejuvenation. I believe the spa bathroom is here to stay.” Karen Smith, Savvy Surrounding Style.

Brizo® body spray system

“In the realm of showering today, homeowners are looking for a more innovative way to experience that spa-like atmosphere at home. Body sprays are a classic option in the shower, but are also all the craze right now! As more homeowners decide to remove their old whirlpool tub, we are seeing more and more use of body sprays in the shower. The typical homeowner never has enough time in one day but still looks for that relaxing and invigorating showering experience. As for the homeowner that’s worried about resale, if removing the tub, they shouldn’t. Installing body sprays has become the expected alternative in the shower in lieu of the whirlpool tub for the prospective buyer.” Deanna Bert, Kohler Signature Store by Crescent Supply.

“I feel this is on it's way to being a classic. Although they are somewhat new in shower design, I feel as if they are more readily available as well as affordable in recent times. Once homeowners are exposed to the various health benefits that are available in body sprays, I am sure they will become that one essential item they can't live without in a shower.” Amena Zamora, Amena Zamora Designs. “All luxury plumbing fi tures will follow the demand for upgraded spa showers. Sleek versions of body sprays, flush with the wall, are the preferred spray styles of the moment. The horizontal jet-action sprays have a very practical function. They are ideal if you want to shower without getting your hair wet. And they have a therapeutic value providing a concentrated spray on the chest, back or thighs. Body sprays work best in large showers to contain the overspray.” Dana King, NEXT Project Studio.

CRAZE

“I think it’s a craze. I feel people won’t use body sprays as much as they think they will. The spray is very powerful and has minimal control compared to a shower wand. We recommend careful placement of body sprays to be sure the powerful spray is not directed toward the shower door. This is a special consideration if you want to eliminate vinyl sweeps for a cleaner look. Vinyl sweeps assist in containing water, but they are not the best look. We recommend you consult the glass installer in the design process, along with the plumber and tile installer, to achieve the best finish and performance.” George Manlove, MOD Glass.
