GRAY
My father’s side of the family never seemed to tire of the family names Joseph, Thomas and Patrick. The men in the family were aptly named Joseph Thomas, Thomas Patrick, Patrick Joseph, Joseph Patrick, Patrick Thomas or Thomas Joseph. My cousins, brother, uncle, grandpa and great uncle all wore their names proudly as did several of their children! Oh yes, there were many juniors and IIIs. What does that say about us? Simply, we love our family names and the comfort and joy they bring to family members. The same goes with the color gray. St. Louis homeowners and designers just can't seem to get enough of it. Every shade of gray is on display in the winning baths in our highly anticipated 2017 Baths of the Year contest. Gray cabinets are paired with white floors; gray floors with white cabinets; white cabinets with gray backsplashes; white countertops with gray walls, tiled or painted. Without a doubt, gray is the "IT" color of 2017 for bathrooms, large and small. While multiple contrasting gray tones can highlight the tranquility and beautiful design in each spa-like retreat, natural elements of wood and greenery add yet another layer of elegance taking these baths to a whole new level. If a spa experience is something you yearn for, check out the latest in gorgeous freestanding tubs (page 10). There are even infini y-edge tubs that resemble resort-style swimming pools available for the home. These beautiful tubs, stone vessel sinks (page 14) and mirrors that pack everything you could possibly want or need inside are to die for (page 68). Would any of us need a reason to spend hours in a spa-like retreat? I don't think so. Present to any mother a kitchen design that allows maximum natural light, classic white shaker cabinets, which collect little dust, soft gray backsplashes and walls, plus multipurpose cubbyholes and a full-size chalkboard barn door hiding the pantry, and one may fin her at days end singing her heart out in an infini y-edge tub! Lorrien Homes, in collaboration with the client/homeowner, designed and remodeled a kitchen that is hip, family friendly and beyond organized. Everything has its place, and the homeowner knows where to find it (page 72). Simplifying life was key, and they nailed it. Hopefully we will inspire you to consider updating a small or big corner of your home with this issue. If you need any professional help in accomplishing a project, look no further than SLHL's SourceBook. For your convenience, it is tucked inside this August issue (page 79 - 94) and is also online on our website all year long (stlouishomesmag.com)

Build a Bath Bubbling with Style and Functionality
Bob Burmeister, co-owner/principal designer at Marc Christian Fine Cabinetry, is a cabinetry connoisseur. He shares tips for making your bathroom into a luxurious sanctuary. SLHL: What are some creative ways homeowners can make their bathroom unique? Bob: New styles are calling for cleaner looks with freestanding pedestal tubs, oversized showers with multiple showerheads, body sprays and rain showers. SLHL: Should the cabinetry in each of your bathrooms match or complement one another? Bob: Every designer views that differently. I prefer each bathroom to take on its own identity. I tend to design styles that complement the users' wants and wishes, while still keeping them functional and aesthetically pleasing. SLHL: What should you think about when choosing your tile in relation to your cabinetry? Bob: Tile should be the first choice since there are often so many tiles in a bathroom. There is commonly tile on floor , showers, wainscot walls, base moldings and even window casings. I like to sketch up an initial look, and then consider tile colors and finishes such as glass, marble or porcelains. Once the tile is selected, I design a nice cabinet that complements the tile. Throw in the perfect quartz countertop, and your bathroom has a style of its own.
18
Edited by Melissa Mauzy Photography by Colin Miller/Strauss Peyton
SLHL: How do you decide between doors and drawers for bathroom cabinetry? Bob: I don’t think deciding between them is as important as what you’re going to store inside them. Some of the nicest bathrooms I’ve done lately just have wide, deep drawers capable of storing the largest of towels, hair dryers and curling irons, but I can also divide a top drawer into different levels to allow organization of make-up, dental hygiene and hair grooming items. And whether we choose doors or drawers, installing electrical outlets inside the cabinet eliminates all of those tangled electrical cords running across your vanity tops. SLHL: What should homeowners think about in terms of cabinetry design for aging in place? Bob: When designing for aging in place, I need to plan on wheelchair accessibility to sinks and showers, as well as turn-around floor space and reachable wall cabinet storage. We usually have limited base cabinetry in these designs. SLHL: Should handicap accessible be a priority when remodeling your bathroom for resale value? Bob: I think this is something that should be considered when looking at the entire layout of the home. If your house is a ranch with few or no steps, then accessibility may be something that would be wise to incorporate. SLHL: What is the coolest trend in bathrooms now? Bob: Defini ely the freestanding pedestal tubs. But follow that up with an oversized steam shower with a heated seat, and you have a winner.

PAINTING A STORY Artisan Mark Witzling’s contemporary abstract paintings tell a different story for each person who sees them. By Kellie Hynes Photography by Colin Miller/ Strauss Peyton
E
ach one of Mark Witzling’s oil and cold wax paintings tells a story. But the story is different for everyone who gazes at it. Where some see nature, others see religion. Or a still life. Or a figu e. This is the beauty, and the challenge, of contemporary abstract painting. As Witzling says, “with abstracts, you remove the literal constraints. You’re not grading it against another image.” Instead, his work explores color, shapes and lines that are juxtapositions of intricacy and simplicity. An accomplished marketer by day, Witzling taught himself how to paint after he was inspired by “art in the place that the artist meant the art to be” during a vacation to Italy. He credits American artist Rebecca Crowell for introducing him to the oil and cold wax medium. Before painting, he mixes cold bees wax, which has a soft, cake frosting-like texture, with oil paints. The wax adds texture and transparency to the oil paints, which are applied in layers to wood panels. There is
20
a surprising lack of paintbrushes on display in Witzling’s studio. Instead, he uses tools like steel wool, sticks and pastry cutters to dive through the layers and allow previously applied colors to peek through. It’s a technique Witzling describes as process painting. “You have to let yourself make the marks without being judgmental. Eventually the painting starts to speak to you, and interact with you.” The hardest part of painting, Witzling says, is knowing when a piece is finishe . So how does he know? “When the viewer can see a complexity of layers, but feel the unity of a piece, that’s when it’s done,” Witzling explains. Witzling’s paintings will be available for sale at the Midwest Salute to the Arts, August 25-27, at Moody Park in Fairview Heights. For more information, visit his website or instagram. he challenge in this new home’s 275-square-foot master bath was combining the materials and finishes to be consistent with the home’s architecture. Designed by Alspaugh Kitchen & Bath, the contemporary bath features a waterfall-style white marble vanity counter that drops inward towards the vanity, forming a water-resistant side splash. The floating vanity cabinets are faced with a soft-gray composite veneer slab and were made extra deep to provide space for a raised backsplash shelf. The soaking tub’s water line is flush to the top of the white marble stone bench to give the bathing area the quality of an outdoor infini y pool. Plank-style walnut benches have a water-resistant finish. The shower has a steam unit, two rain heads, two wall heads and two personal shower fi tures. The finish materials include a black marble floor, white marble mosaic walls with a vertical brown porcelain accent stripe and brown porcelain ceiling. A full glass wall overlooking a park-like setting truly transports you to the outdoors in this serene master bath. WHY THE JUDGES LOVE IT: This bath is very spa like. We love the infini y illusion of the tub area. The space has an overall soft feeling despite the heavier hues of black and brown. See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources. or a couple seeking an outside-the-box contemporary design for their new home’s master bathroom, Savvy Surrounding Style drew inspiration from fine hotels the homeowners visited in their travels. The resulting 200-square-foot retreat includes custom elements such as a beautiful, freestanding soaking tub, open, freeform shower with rainhead and glass wall and bench. Floating, underlit barnwood vanities with glass-bowl vessel sinks add a contrasting texture to the luxurious space. Lighting at the mirrors

enhances the floating effect of the vanities. Wood-look porcelain floor tile comple es the contemporary space. WHY THE JUDGES LOVE IT: The minimalistic design of this master bath has a museum quality and a high level of sophistication. The play on textures is outstanding, and the barnwood works well in the mix. See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources. Photography by Michael Jacob.

LESS THAN 100 SQUARE FEET
esigner ADJ Interiors was challenged in this 65-square-foot bath with creating space that could grow with a young girl from tween stage into young woman. Fun and youthful, but classic enough to carry into the teen years, the designer and homeowner came up with a bright pink-and-green color palette. The walls are washed in a pretty green with pops of pink incorporated in the custom-designed window shade and colorful artwork. The vanity was custom designed with ample storage and fantastic lighting mounted on the mirror for future endless hours of makeup experimentation. A Carrara marble top, classic polished nickel faucet and mirrored cabinet tower doors with a playful yet classic square
26
motif complete the vanity wall. The floor features an Ann Sacks Carrara in a cool hexagon mosaic. In the shower, the tile is an artisan platinum crackle that complements the marble. This youthful space gives a chic twist on a child’s bath that will grow with her for years to come. WHY THE JUDGES LOVE IT: This light and clean bath will grow with the client into her teens. We love the look of the mirrored cabinet door on the vanity. The crystal round knobs on the vanity and faucet are a nice touch. See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources. Photography by Anne Matheis.

he entry to the chic 30-square-foot powder room is through a flush L-shaped hidden pivot door made of white ash. The homeowner and designer played with the simple combinations of smooth and rough, heavy and light to create a room with visual surprises at each glance. The juxtaposition of the woven wall texture and smooth stone floo ing is further accentuated by a float ng plaster ceiling, which creates the space for the custom 6-foot amber glass Cascadian fi ture. The glass adds color while casting magical shadows against the textured tile walls and hangs over the floating stone-and-black-walnut console. The fi ture is immediately noticed through the upper clerestory in the powder room when entering
the 2,000-square-foot penthouse. The design was constrained by the fi ed perimeter wall and ceiling height as well as plumbing that could not be moved. WHY THE JUDGES LOVE IT: This powder room was so well thought out. Modern and cool, the space feels soft despite all of the hard surfaces within. We love the way the custom fi ture highlights the variety of textures in the bath. See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources. Photography by Anne Matheis.

MORE THAN 200 SQUARE FEET
ith a large, active family these homeowners sought a quiet oasis for their master suite. With ample room to create a luxurious retreat, designer Tamsin Design Group created the 400-square-foot clean and classic bath that would stand the test of time. The designer imparted custom detailing throughout with an original cabinet design and intricate tile work. The arabesque tile is a perfect backdrop to the floating soaking tub. For added comfort, a heated floor system was included with the honed limestone. Marble-like quartz countertops keep with the classic style the clients desired. The architect created a large walk-in shower with arched doorways

Custom hardware throughout adds a perfect finishing touch. WHY THE JUDGES LOVE IT: The tile detailing in this space is exquisite. We love the open shower and how it ties into the outdoor shower. oastal charm combined with plenty of space for guests was the request for this 166-square-foot guest bath designed by Amy Studebaker Design. A sofa table found during a buying trip down south inspired the bathroom’s overall design. Wanting to use a piece of furniture for the vanity to bring warmth and interest to the space, the designer was inspired to create a custom vanity reminiscent of old washstands. A simple, elegant top portion features corbels and a shelf. For added storage for towels and guests’ items, the designer created a built-in cabinet with chicken-wire door fronts, which brings a causal element while also adding texture. To achieve the casual, thrown-together look, smaller round mirrors and simple sconces mix with the larger, taller washstand. The coastal ambience is brought to life with the use of shiplap, round port-hole-like mirrors and a navy-and-white ticking stripe dhurrie rug. Other charming accents include a vintage green stool, collection of glass bottles with shells as toppers and, as with any true classic Nantucket space, a lantern hung from the ceiling to softly light the space. WHY THE JUDGES LOVE IT: This high-end, yet vintage-y space is bursting with texture and shape. The individual elements are so well thought out and combine to make the whole room feel warm and natural. See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources. Photography by Alise O’Brien.

esigned for her client’s two elementary-school-aged boys, this 60-square-foot bathroom by Joni Spear Interior Design needed to be masculine enough to take the boys well into their teenage years while having a modern, farmhouse feel. An unused closet was eliminated allowing the designer to include a double vanity so each child would have his own sink. The space is predominately covered with white tile in a larger size with dimensional waves to get away from the standard white subway tile. In the vanity area, a gray-and-brown granite countertop was chosen to hide dirt and spills the boys may incur. For interest, a glass mosaic tile provides a striking contrast between the counters, floo ing and white tiles. Used in an unconventional way, the designer created two vertical stripes form floor to ceiling, firs

separating the two sinks and second down the shower wall creating the illusion of a waterfall. Soft blue paint gives the space a more masculine feel. Custom mirrors were made locally from wooden pallets and were painted and stained to give a rough, yet polished feel. Lights with a dark bronze finish and Edison bulbs complete the rustic charm. WHY THE JUDGES LOVE IT: Handsome and classic, this space is functional for two young boys. The shelf on the bottom of the vanity is perfect for storage. The seamless glass in the shower makes the space feel bigger. See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources. Photography by Megan Thiele-Lorenz.

leader in the St. Louis home-building industry for more than six decades, Kemp Homes was founded by Fred M. Kemp, an architect with a vision. Today, thousands of quality-built homes in innovative neighborhoods throughout the metro region refle t his belief that homes should be “designed to fit the natural environment of the land, emphasizing indoor-outdoor relationships.” Continuing his late father’s legacy, Bill Kemp is co-principal of the legendary company and readily admits that he’s been immersed in home building since childhood. Bill’s specialty is Kemp Signature Homes, the firm’s design/build operation, assisting custom clients to create their finely crafted, one-of-a-kind homes. When designing his personal residence in 2015, however, Bill wanted to do something truly unique – “to build a home that exemplifies everything that we’re about.” He chose a 1.6-acre site at one of the highest points in St. Louis County, with wintertime views that stretch for miles to the south. Steeply sloped, the property would require extensive grading, but this was no problem for a company skilled in adapting to the “natural environment of the land.” Working with Robert Srote of Schaub+Srote Architects, Bill defined the parameters: An open layout, designed around a central grand salon and conducive to entertaining. Flowing seamlessly from outside to inside and level to level. As beautiful from the rear as the front. With attention to detail in every aspect. According to the youthful builder/owner, Srote’s design “hit the ball out of the park the first time around,” achieving all of his objectives. Completed in spring of 2016, the five-bedroom story-and-a-half is a magnificent example of Old World French Country styling, encompassing 5,000 square feet on the main levels and 2,200 on the lower entertainment level. Fully consistent from the exterior to the interior, the architectural features visually emphasize the plan’s flow. The elevation is a sophisticated blend of stone and stucco, with bronze trim, simulated slate shingles, arched dormers with copper roofs and a porte-cochère leading to the detached four-car garage. Inside, these classic Old World elements are repeated with Venetian plaster walls, arched openings, full masonry fi eplaces, wrought-iron lighting fi tures and dark-stained millwork, distressed beams, and wide-plank distressed oak floo ing. The foyer immediately reinforces the theme, with an arched entry door in glass and wrought iron and a groin vault that soars to 16 feet. Although most of the home is more relaxed and rustic, the study and dining room flanking the foyer retain a sense of formality. Rich wainscoting lines the study walls, and the ceiling beams are smooth, rather than distressed. An octagonal tray ceiling with 7-inch molding tops the dining room, and the

adjacent butler’s pantry is barrel-arched. Dominating the main level, the grand salon is a dramatic entertainment space, with 18-foot ceilings, distressed arched beams and a floo -to-ceiling Missouri limestone fi eplace. To one side, the ceiling drops to 10 feet, creating a convivial atmosphere for the bar area, which is delineated by a bi-level peninsula and features sueded granite countertops and provincial Beck/Allen cabinetry. Fully open to the grand salon, the kitchen revolves around a huge work island, surfaced in Delicatus Cream granite and inset with a farmhouse sink equipped with gantry faucets. A striking corbeled range hood, black countertops and rubbed bronze hardware

provide a handsome contrast to the distressed white cabinetry, and the decorative tile backsplash above the six-burner Wolf range is Kemp’s own design. Adjoining the kitchen, the breakfast room has French doors leading to the outdoor living area, and a separate entrance provides convenient access from the kitchen to the stepdown grilling station, which is thoughtfully positioned at the side of the home. Describing the transition from indoors to outdoors, Kemp explains, “I wanted to create an intimate outdoor space, without interrupting the fl w of the plan.” Double-vaulted, the open-air living room has a superbly crafted, distressed knotty pine ceiling, exposed aggregate

floo ing, a full-height brick-and-stone wood-burning fireplace, 65-inch flatscreen TV and a True kegerator for handy beverage service. Wrought-iron railings line the stairway to the expansive lower-level patio, beautifully landscaped by Baxter Gardens and centered by a freeform heated pool, with Pebble Sheen flooring and a cool deck system by Prestige Pools. Returning to the home’s main floor, the master retreat occupies nearly a third of this level and is a particular source of pride for the owner/builder. A 14-foot ceiling adds volume to the spacious bedroom, and an innovative “dressing” area, with

sink, undercounter refrigerator and coffee bar, separates the bedroom from the huge island closet and bath. Just steps away from that first cup of morning coffee, “This is a feature I suggest to all of my custom clients,” Kemp notes. Lavished with travertine and also designed by Kemp, the master bath is literally breathtaking. “There’s a lot of geometry going on in this space,” he says, indicating the peaked ceiling, distressed trusses and freestanding custom copper tub that backs to a room-size shower, with 10-foot seat, six body sprays, and two shower heads. Even more imaginative, controls just outside the enclosure convert it to a steam shower.
40
Further emphasizing the home’s architectural fl w, a switchback staircase with radius wall leads to the lower level, where the stepdown landing repeats the curve. Completely devoted to entertaining, this wonderfully open space duplicates the upstairs peninsula bar and showcases Venetian plaster ceilings, a temperature-controlled wine cellar, see-through fi eplace and reclaimed shutters bracketing the great room TV. Distressed beams define the billiard area and a theater room with 120-inch screen, and French doors open to the pool deck. A hidden sound room houses the AV components and home automation system, all of which can be controlled by a smartphone. If there were such a thing as an architectural “gene,” it’s evident that

Bill Kemp has inherited it. Meticulously crafted, this extraordinary residence is a tribute to his father’s vision – free-fl wing, faithful to its styling and a perfect merger of the living environment with its natural surroundings. Under Bill’s leadership, there can be no doubt that these design principles will continue to distinguish Kemp Signature Homes, satisfying yet another generation of St. Louis’ custom home buyers. you ever needed a testimonial to the fact that landscapes are continually changing and evolving, you would find it in this Huntleigh garden. Covering more than two acres, the homeowner has always been hands-on working with Sherwood’s Forest Nursery and landscape designer Bill Minford to keep a basic outdoor core continually fresh and new. Over the past 25-plus years, the homeowner has added a rustic stone, multi-level patio that complements the sandstone facing of their ranch-style home; a small water feature; large swimming pool; a huge natural cedar pool house with both indoor and covered outdoor spaces, and an outdoor kitchen that would make Food Network chefs sit up and take notice. But that was only the beginning. Before long a gurgling stream and a series of small waterfalls wound around the pool house deck and splashed into a restful koi pond. While those installations have a rustic, Colorado-style feel, the homeowner also has added two more formal
garden areas in which glittering streams of water pour forth from old-world-style fountains surrounded by manicured boxwood hedges. Each contains ample space for visitors to sit and relax alongside the splashing water. Native shade plants dominate the woodland walk at the rear of the property, and Bill and the homeowner are continually experimenting with species that will do well in the dry, shady conditions and hold the slightly sloping grade. It is, however, the series of plant islands dotting the spacious lawn that stand as a testimonial to the true evolution of the landscape. Each island began when a mature tree reached the end of its natural life. Rather than struggle to grind out a stump and try to grow grass on an area of lawn that would continually sink as the tree roots deteriorated, the homeowner saw an opportunity to create a new beautiful spot. Sometimes, the stump became a pedestal for a bird bath with fl wering shrubs accenting the surrounding space. Other times, he added columnar oaks to the side of a

former tree site. On another garden island, he installed a gazebo. “We tried grouping shrubs around the spots where the trees had been, then adding pops of color,” Minford explains. As plants matured and grew larger, so did the islands. Then, individual islands grew together to create larger plantscapes. “It’s always an evolving situation,” says Minford. In addition to being beautiful, the garden is designed to be used. “Every Saturday he (the homeowner) hosts a lunch for family and friends who have a standing invitation to drop by and enjoy the space,” Minford explains. Delightful sculptures of children fishing and romping on the lawn bring reminders of the hours his grandchildren have spent playing in the lovely garden. What makes this giant landscape work, Minford points out, is the fact that the homeowner is involved in every aspect of the process, hand-trimming the numerous boxwoods and the ivy that precisely drapes over the stone walls by the pool. “He chooses not to travel in the summer; he wants to be here to work on the yard and host his friends on Saturdays.” In the years they have worked together, there has been a pattern to transforming the landscape. “Usually he comes up with an idea,” Bills explains. “We discuss it, refine it and then do it” One of the more recent projects has been a leafy tunnel of burgundy-foliage Schubert cherry trees that arch over a shady path leading down a slight hill from
48

the house to the pool. “Just when I think we are done with the landscape, he comes up with a new idea,” Bill says with a laugh. The use of distinctive plants such as the Schubert cherries is typical of the shrubs and trees that are incorporated into the large landscape. Green foliage of the Schubert cherry emerges in the spring and serves as a backdrop for elongated clusters of white blossoms. The foliage turns burgundy/purple in summer. In many cases, Bill has massed shrubs to create a dramatic impact in the large landscape or used rows of plants to draw the eye through the garden. Particularly dramatic are hedges of mop head ‘Annabelle' and panicle oakleaf hydrangeas and curving golden lines of dwarf, droopy ‘Gold Mop’ cypress. Those contrast sharply with dark green rows of crisply pruned ‘Winter Gem’ and ‘Green Velvet’ boxwoods. Both the cypress and boxwood are evergreen providing structure to the garden in winter. He has made liberal use of Japanese lilac trees that bloom in mid-May and are best known for incredibly fragrant white blossoms and a lovely spreading habit. Long-blooming, red ‘Knock Out’ roses are spotted throughout the landscape to provide pops of color during the growing season as are re-blooming, golden ‘Stella D’Oro’ daylilies. Bill cannot begin to estimate the number of trees, shrubs, perennials and annuals that had been planted in the Huntleigh landscape throughout the years. “We have tried to incorporate a number of different textures and both informal and formal areas into the garden,” he says. No matter what size the landscape, when he is talking with new clients, Bill advises homeowners to start their landscaping plan by focusing on the front of the house. “That is the area that has the biggest impact,” he points out. “I like to sit down with the client, ask what they envision and pull together ideas based on their input. They can start with something simple that they can expand on in the future.” More and more clients, he notes, are interested in “landscaping with native plants and grasses. But it really has to do with the look of the house. Plants like that are more informal and you can’t really do an informal presentation with a Colonial house. The architecture of the house helps drive the situation.” See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources and additional photos. STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM

Compact selection is great for the front of borders and mixed containers.” David Sherwood, Sherwood’s Forest. 2. “The Dahlia bicolor rose has brilliant contrasts seen from when the bloom emerges as a deep magenta up to its full-bloom colors of white, yellow, and pink. Also, the size and texture of this fl wer make a beautifully dramatic, eye-catching addition to any landscape or container.” Andria Graeler, Chesterfield Valley Nursery. 3. "The sun-loving Malva sylbestris 'Zebrina' will dazzle you with satiny lavender and maroon striped blooms from July through September. They are great for cut fl wers and are known to attract butterflies and humming bi ds.” Sarah Riley, Bowood Farms. 4. “I love the striking white and red fl wers of Lil Kim, which have a long bloom period (June-Oct). This Rose of Sharon is tolerant of St. Louis' urban conditions; wet to dry, poor soil, hot and humid summers, and harsh winters.” Claire Weiss, Frisella Nursery. 5. “The bright leaves of Caladiums have various shapes, like hearts or arrows and come in color combinations of red, pink, rose, white, chartreuse and green. These easy plants provide easy color any gardener will love. ” Richard Poynter, Poynter Landscape & Architecture. 6. “Lantana is my favorite bicolor blooming annual. The bloom clusters come in a variety of combinations of red, orange, yellow, white, pink, and purple. They work great in pots on the porch or as a border along the front of a sunny planting bed.” Katy Molaskey, Green Guys. 7. “With a mature vine producing over 2,000 highly scented, vibrantly colored blossoms, 'Sweet Summer Love Clematis' entertains us for months mid-summer through fall. Enjoy beautiful fl wers, perennials and shrubs from the Rocky Mountains and alkaline environs in the Heckman Rock Garden. The rock garden shares a special space with the Kassabaum Dwarf Conifer Garden in front of the Shoenberg Temperate House. Garden-goers are greeted by the Don Wiegand statue, Cora. Cora was installed in November 1993 and depicts a three-year-old girl whose pose conveys youth, innocence and spirituality. Purple, pink, white and yellow fl wers and plants are sure to brighten the moods of guests. Visitors can enjoy classic plants such as purple sage and cheddar pink peeking through lush green plants along the stone patterns. The rock garden is also home to the United States’ rarest wildfl wers, the Tennessee conefl wer. The Tennessee conefl wer was one of the first species listed as endangered but was removed from the list in 2011 thanks to seed collecting. Although peak bloom is spring, the rock garden can be enjoyed year-round, with plants blooming in each season. See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

“Ever heard the song ‘Welcome to Boomtown? ’” Yolanda asks, organizing trays of gluten-free thumbprint cookies behind the counter at Sweetwater Harvest Kitchen. “Santa Fe is boomtown,” she says. Yolanda was born in New Mexico’s capitol 67 years ago, and raised two blocks from the farm-to-fork joint where she waitresses. She’ll bring you a Buddha bowl or the house-made buckwheat granola when your stomach needs a break from smothered enchiladas and burritos, and she might school you on local history, too. Before the art scene burst open in the middle of the last century Yolanda says, “This was a small town.” With a population of 84,099, Santa Fe’s still small by St. Louis standards. But "The City Different" packs tons of charisma – and more than a little magic – into its boot-shaped,
37.4-square-mile limits. The magic starts at dusk with a painted sky. Multiple factors contribute to Santa Fe’s dramatic sunsets: The lack of oxygen at 7,200 feet, along with local ordinances limiting light and environmental pollution and atmospheric volatility. The stargazing isn’t bad either, and the viewing’s prime at Cross of the Martyrs, a 25-foot, 76-ton reinforced concrete cross on the fringes of the city’s downtown district, where you can check into some of the town’s best hotels, including the historic La Fonda on the Plaza, Eldorado Hotel & Spa and, our pick, Rosewood Inn of the Anasazi. Commemorating the deaths of Franciscan friars and Spanish colonists, Cross of the Martyrs is a reminder that our nation’s second-oldest city is define , today, by its incongruities. collide in a community that melds traditional and contemporary art movements — even the food is a little complicated. Local grub is where your edification begins. We know it's only August, but when you’re seated at a round four-top in a drafty corner of the Shed, and your server leans over to ask the state question – “Red or green?” – “Christmas” is a smart answer. “We’re one of the rare places that has its own regional cuisine,” explains Cynthia Delgado, director of marketing for TOURISM Santa Fe. Founded on indigenous techniques and tweaked by Spanish colonists, Northern New Mexican fare gets its fl vor from the chile, which looks like a hot pepper and is refined into sauce — though nobody calls the sauce sauce. It’s just chile, and if you’re interested in learning more, sign up for a class at the Santa Fe School of Cooking. If you’re sensitive to spice there’s no shame in ordering your chile on the side when lunching at Tia Sophia’s, another legit, family-operated joint the locals love, and the place where the term “Christmas” was originally coined by waitress Martha Rotuno in the Eighties. Historical tidbits are hidden deep in the crevices of the city’s hallmark earth-colored adobes — but you’ll have to chat up the natives for the best stories. Start at the Palace of the Governors, the 400-year-old adobe on the Plaza, a designated National Historic Landmark and American Treasure housing New Mexico’s history museum. Indigenous craftsmen are stationed outside the building daily, hawking their silver, turquoise and beadwork via Santa Fe’s Palace Portal Program. You can also mingle with locals on Saturday mornings at the Santa Fe Farmer’s Market, located in Santa Fe’s hip Railyard, which is home to 13 contemporary galleries. “Our native communities have protected and maintained their ancestral homes, unlike other native communities in other parts of the country,” Delgado says. Your visit isn’t complete without a day trip to one of the area’s eight pueblos. Taos Pueblo is most popular, and we recommend visiting on a Feast Day for traditional dancing and cuisine. Northern

FAMILY ACT
A Realtor and her interior designer daughter-in-law work together to update a bathroom into a bright, airy retreat.
By Barbara E. Stefàno Photography by Anne Matheis
After more than a quarter century in their Webster Groves home, empty-nesters Anne and Karl Dunajcik were ready to freshen up spaces that had scarcely been altered since the Clinton Administration—a time when light, bright and airy weren’t necessarily high on the design aesthetics checklist. “The master bath had gone out of date for the 26 years while we were busy raising kids, putting them through college and everything,” says Anne, who, as the number one Realtor with Red Key Realty Leaders in Frontenac, knows all too well the value of kitchen and bath updates to resale value. “The bathroom was stuck in the ‘90s with brass fi tures, cultured marble, forest-green marble floor colored tile. We had a lot of space to work with, but everything was dated.” Enter Lindsey Dunajcik, Anne’s daughter-in-law, who went to work for RSI Kitchen and Bath just as Anne was readying for renovations. “She saw this as a great opportunity to expand my experience and take on her project," Lindsey says. "She had a vision, but we basically
60
started from scratch and began picking out the products.’” It would be Lindsey’s first bath remodel, and having been married to Anne’s son, Brad, for just two years, one of her first tests of in-law bonds. “It was a little more stressful at first because I know that having her in my life forever I want to make sure I make her happy. Fortunately, I know the products we have are fantastic quality.” The younger Dunajcik’s first contribution to the project was her idea to angle the shower, which sat right next to the room entry. Anne had planned to move it to where the windows sat, but the reconfiguration allowed her to keep the shower in its existing position, make it larger and still get it out of the way of the swinging door, another of Lindsey's ideas. The glass exterior keeps the sightline open, giving Anne a great view of the pebble surface of the shower floor and wall. Light tiles and white cabinetry brighten the space even further, making it feel larger, while a mirror across from the shower further enhances the illusion of an expanded space.

In step with Anne’s desire for a spa-like atmosphere, Lindsey incorporated heated floors and a rain shower head. The new tub, a BainUltra Essentia jet tub—Anne refers to as the “Ferrari” of bathtubs—includes chromatherapy lighting run by remote. Overhead, a chandelier sparkles, while a wood wall espalier provides a touch of warmth and place to stretch muscles tired from dancing. “It just feels like I’ve walked into a wonderful, relaxing, luxurious space again,” Anne says. “One of my favorite little things is pushing the button on the blinds after my shower and they automatically both go up… and I’m welcoming the day. In the end, Lindsey says, both Dunajciks came away with something they really wanted. “Through this project we actually got to know each other a lot better. Just building a better friendship with her was amazing, and helping her get the bathroom of her dreams, too.” See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

MIRROR, MIRROR The latest bathroom technology will light up your space. By Shannon Craig Photography courtesy of Robern
68
The fairest of them all, you ask? Thanks to the task mastering, all over flat ering, latest and greatest in bathroom mirror backlighting, the answer will always be “you.” Melding sleek and rustproof anodized aluminum and cool-toned, natural-light-mimicking LED, today’s backlit bathroom mirror isn’t just for hours of self-admiration. “It’s so practical,” says Premier Plumbing showroom manager, Betsy Hayden, of the powder-room innovation produced by industry leaders such as Robern and Kohler. “You have to have lighting anyway, and you have to have a mirror and somewhere for storage. If you’re going to have it all, why not combine all of those needs into one?” Typically, the phrase “all-in-one” is far from reductive. However, when a mirror storage unit can accommodate such an—honestly, startling—range of amenities and functions, all-in-one sounds a little lame. Ranging from a compact and standard 24” x 40” to the length of your bathroom or closet door, backlit mirrored cabinets from Robern can be outfit ed with a defogger, outlets for electric razors or toothbrushes, nightlight bulbs, and a removable magnifying mirror that magnetizes itself to the surface of the glass. “It can also come with Bluetooth…and speakers,” explains Jessica Krekeler, store manager of Kohler Signature Store by Crescent Supply. Impromptu shower jam sessions and morning pep talks accompanied by an epic soundtrack, “yeah,” Krekeler says. “It can do it all.”

Those familiar with Snow White’s fate already know that being the fairest of them all can come at a price, and for a quality backlit mirror that can be anything from $500 to $3,500 depending on its size and fun additions. “If you think about it though,” Hayden deduces, “you’re really paying for a quality mirror, lighting and a cabinet, which can even out if they were each purchased separately.” Aside from moonlighting as a John-side jukebox and making you look your best even on the worst of days, backlit mirrored cabinets also eliminate clutter, bringing space to even the smallest bathrooms. “Even sconces that hang on the wall next to the mirror can be tight for small bathrooms,” says Krekeler. “The LED in the cabinet solves that while providing natural, cooler light…literally. So you’re not sweating in front of hot lights getting ready in the morning.” Fellow bathroom goers, it’s time we face facts. Be it shadows or glares, pink-orange-yellow light casts or getting so close to the mirror that we’re doubling over to get a better angle: struggling with a traditional medicine cabinet is not a good look. Besides, as Hayden elaborates, investing in the irresistibly flat ering aura of a backlit mirrored cabinet not only boosts your confidence and straightens your spine, “It just makes sense,” she says. “There really is nothing easier.” Fair enough. M IDW EST MO DERN A floo -to-ceiling renovation brings light, function, openness and an East Coast contemporary sensibility to a young family’s outdated Chesterfield kitchen By Barbara E. Stefàno Photography by Anne Matheis
W
ith a toddler in tow and a penchant for the contemporary look of their East Coast roots, Kristin Santi and Matthew Diddy wanted a clean, bright and well-functioning kitchen in their Chesterfield home. Dana Dunbar of Lorrien Homes, the general contractor who spearheaded the young couple’s renovation, says the space felt slightly claustrophobic thanks to dim colors and its lack of light, natural and otherwise. “It was a very traditional look: dark paint colors, dark cabinet colors, only two windows in the corner over the sink. They came from Manhattan and were used to a contemporary look, so they wanted more light and cleaner lines,” says Dunbar. So, Dunbar focused on a configuration and colors that would open up the room both visually and in terms of functional storage and appliances. Neutral yet anything but bland, soft gray tones such as Monorail Silver and Gray Screen from Sherwin Williams enhanced the natural light. The pair of tiny corner windows became a larger bank of windows that dominate the wall over the sink, which he repositioned from the corner to the long end of the countertop. The couple chose classic white shaker cabinets, not only to allow maximum light to enter the room but for simple lines that look clean and collect little dust. In fact, there are relatively few wall cabinets, apart from unobtrusive upper units near the entry to the garage. For 3-year-old Miles, the full-sized chalkboard barn door in front of the pantry—one of Dunbar’s favorite features of the redesign—offers a welcome place to draw while the adults prepare dinner. An infusion of high-end kitchen appliances would stir envy

in even professional chefs, starting with that impressive 48-inch Sub-Zero refrigerator, artfully residing behind a set of white cabinet doors that match the rest of the room. Cater-cornered to it is the six-burner Wolf range, which faces a large center island with gorgeous, white waterfall granite. One of Dunbar’s favorite aspects of the finished design is the custom banquette table. “It acts as a nice line of demarcation between the kitchen and the family room,” he says. “There was a wall there, which we eliminated, then built the table and [booth] to provide dining space and still divide the room.” But, many of the most functional aspects of the kitchen are the features a visitor might not readily see: an “electronics garage” with USB charging ports, neatly tucked away into multipurpose cubbyholes; a touchless faucet; the microwave built into the island; and the custom-built walk-in pantry that sits just behind that spectacular barn door. “Originally, it wasn’t going to be a walk-in pantry; it was just going to be like a cabinet,” Kristin says. “But we talked to Dana every day and drew what we imagined it would look like. While the carpenter was there, we made changes along the way to make sure it was what we wanted.” Like everything else in the kitchen, the pantry is tailored to fit all the very specific purposes for which the family would be using it. Every jar, can, canister, basket and box has its place. “Now it functions beautifully. There’s a place for everything. Oven trays, muffi pans, cutting knives—if you’re an organized person it’s a dream kitchen,” Kristin Santi says of her renovated kitchen. “Or even if you’re not!” See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

FRISELLA NURSERY
Compliment your Frisella Nursery landscape with our collection of Bistro tables and chairs. These were originally developed in the late 1800’s France and can now be seen in places like Bryant Park in NYC. We love them for their range of colors and styles, simplicity, folding capability to store away and being light enough to carry easily, but not be blown away. 636-798-2555, frisellanursery.com.
PASSIGLIA’S NURSERY & GARDEN CENTER
This is the year to ‘think outside the box’ and plant on the wall! A living wall planter can transform a patio, front entry or even the kitchen wall into a unique garden space. Succulents, herbs and groundcovers are just of few of the types of plants easily grown outside on the wall. Tiny tropicals, such as air plants and miniature cacti, can bring the living wall indoors. Our showroom is brimming with beautiful and unusual planters and garden ornaments to create your one of a kind living wall or miniature garden. 636-458-9202, passiglia.com. The new Adam Aronson Fine Arts Center, designed by Trivers Associates, is sited in Laumeier Sculpture Park. The goal of the project was to create a controlled environment to display artwork year-round. The new gallery and event space is now one of the most prestigious open-air museums in the country. The building is sculptural in nature and rough in texture. The western red cedar siding introduces texture that is indicative of the surrounding trees as well as a refle tion of the contrast of hard-lined steel sculpture in the natural backdrops. As the wood progresses to the northeastern façade, sun studies dictated the appropriate placement and direction to impede sunlight from striking the gallery walls while still preserving views to the plaza and park.
Located on the edge of the St. Lawrence River, Laure Conan Library and City Hall in La Malbaie features contemporary architecture tying together the present city with the historical landscape. Contrasting outdoor materials (stone, glass, dark and light wood), visual openings and structural features creates a multipurpose building that is fully integrated into the cities urban landscape. The site’s highly sloping topography that reaches towards the St. Lawrence River is one of the bases of the architectural concept by ACDF Architecture. Two different entrance levels were created to access the building. The stone base positioned on the lower level hosts city hall, while the wooden clad box rests on top with the library. The project focuses on energy savings and local resources.

Lakewood Cemetery Garden Mausoleum, Minneapolis, MN Photography by Paul Crosby Photography
Lakewood Cemetery Garden Mausoleum is built into the hillside in Minneapolis. The elegant, simple design embraces the landscape while offering a contemplative interior experience. Joan Soranno, FAIA, of HGA Architects and Engineers, designed the 24,000-square-foot, two-level mausoleum. Clad in split-faced gray granite and white mosaic marble, the mausoleum unfolds horizontally on its site within three smaller pods. Inside, natural light floods the space through skylights and lantern windows mixed with materials such as mahogany, marble, onyx, bronze and glass. STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM AUGUST 2017

CLASSIC OR CRAZE
MEDITERRANEAN TILE For our August bath issue, we asked local design professionals if Mediterranean tiles in the bath are a classic or a craze. Here’s what they had to say. Photography courtsey of Walker Zanger
CLASSIC
“Mediterranean tile in a bathroom is classic! Dating back many years ago, decorative tiles with unique prints and patterns have been used in many areas of a home. Not only were these tiles used for aesthetic purposes, but they were used for the practical reason of keeping bare feet cool on a hot day in the warm climate in Spain and similar areas. There are many tile manufacturers that currently are creating tiles to mimic the authentic Mediterranean look and feel. This is a great way to achieve a vibrant and eclectic style!" Channing Glover and Maria Lesko, C and M Studio. “CLASSIC. The use of Mediterranean, or cement tile, dates back to the 8th century when the Moors invaded Spain, eventually creating the Moorish-Spanish culture and introducing this process of tile-making throughout Europe. The popularity of these tiles have come and gone over the centuries due to cultural/political changes and the introduction of mass-produced goods in the 1950’s. Recently we have seen a return in popularity due to the 'green' direction in design of sourcing authentic and sustainable materials. These tiles are a beautiful way to introduce an unexpected artistic element in any room that will truly stand the test of time.” Heather Helms, Interior designer, Schaub+Srote: Architects.
CRAZE
“As much as I LOVE the look of the Mediterranean tile, or 'encaustic tiles,' I feel like this is a craze. Everyone loves to have a space no one else has, which is why this is so appealing and current. But, that makes it trendy. Authentic encaustic tiles are made by hand, much thicker than standard porcelain/natural stone tiles, have a higher end price point, and require a highly skilled installer as they can be a little tricky. When I start seeing these products reproduced at volume retailers, at a discounted price point, the trend can be overdone – therefore losing classic characteristics. But it’s OK to love it right now!! Use it as an accent in a backsplash or a powder room bath!” Anne Marie Boedges, Anne Marie Design Studio. “Looking back in architecture and design history, Mediterranean tiles have been around for a very long time. It would appear as though they make their way in and out of style. Although I think of them as being bright and colorful there are many new tile designs introducing them in more muted color palettes in the distinctive tile patterns. Ultimately, I believe these are a craze of a classic design element.” Amena Zamora, Amena Zamora Designs. “I like a pop of color and bold pattern when designing a bathroom; however, I do feel the Mediterranean tile is a craze that will eventually fade away. So, when using a Mediterranean tile, I would use it in small doses, such as an accent tile or a tile border. This way, when the craze is over or you grow tired of it, it would be easy to replace with something new and fresh!” Barbara Collins, Barbara Collins Interior Design.
