Leather
- The "It" Covering
Who doesn't love leather? The versatility of leather is amazing. We find the material in floor , tables, walls, furniture and lamps, plus there are abundant choices in texture, color, softness and grade. The sleek lines of a contemporary piece pair beautifully with the suppleness of leather. Distressed leather and nailhead hardware create a lodge-like feel, while a rich-looking leather takes center stage on a traditional wingback chair. Don't forget...with proper care a leather piece can last a long time. I recently handed down a 20-year-old leather sectional that I did nothing special caring for it besides not letting the pets on it. What an investment it turned out to be! While today's cowhide companies are developing more and more new designs that create faux exotic hides, real and faux leather continue to be timeless and classic along with animal prints (page 104). Did I mention that leather gets better with age? It also is dust repellant and never goes out of style? And, you can add a piece here and there throughout your home and not break the bank (page 18). Or you can break the bank, and purchase the most beautiful leather piece you've ever laid eyes on and admire it for a lifetime! The choice is yours! Enjoy, Suzie Suzie Osterloh Publisher/Owner

Building More Than Just Tables Barry Kraft doesn’t just tear down barns and build tables. He designs and crafts unique furniture pieces built from 100-year-old barns. BY SHANNON CRAIG PHOTOGRAPHY BY COLIN MILLER/STRAUSS PEYTON
If you haven’t heard of Barry Kraft, you might be hanging around the wrong crowd. Sure, one of his earliest memories is burning down a barn. But for the record, it was his barn. And as the owner and designer of Reclaim Renew – a custom-furniture workshop that uses only reclaimed and salvaged wood – it should be mentioned he’s devastated by that memory now. “I didn’t think it was tragic then,” Kraft says adjusting his baseball cap, “but now I’m like, ‘what was I doing?!’” After a few years of doing what he calls “just about everything,” Kraft began in 2011 designing and building furniture with reclaimed wood. Suddenly, a few pieces coming out of his garage evolved into Reclaim Renew, a full-fledged shop and showroom in Fenton with more than eight talented staff and builder .
24
“I got more clients than I could handle. It just snowballed from there,” Kraft says over the whirring, pounding and buzzing of a handful of machines, each one completing a part of the challenging process unique to preparing reclaimed wood for its new life. Nail holes are filled and smoothed and flat surfaces are then sanded and leveled. The finished product, something as small and intimate as a bedside table, or as large as – one of Kraft’s current projects – a wall of movable stations for a local salon, have earned him a notable reputation as the man to work with when it comes to barn wood. “Wood is so personal. Old wood already has so much character,” says Barry. “The reclaimed wood I use has a story, and by using it to make something else for a client’s home: we’re keeping that story going.”

Though Kraft is up for building just about anything for someone with a great idea, his way of doing business takes it a step further; he wants to build a relationship with that client first “The furniture we build? That’s cool,” Kraft says. “But for me it’s about the history of the wood and delivering on exactly what the client has in mind.” Kraft oversees each and every project taken on by Reclaim Renew from start to finish. He meets with people in their homes or in his workspace, sketches their ideas and turns those designs into beautiful, functional heirlooms. His ideal client is anyone with a good idea and an appreciation for old wood. “A huge part of this job is sitting down with a lady in her eighties
who has had this barn in her family for her entire life, and her saying that she knows the barn won’t be around for the next generation so she wants it to go to us,” Kraft explains. “It’s really special to be a part of that.” Ultimately, Kraft engrains every design – be it a pub table or plans to outfit your dream home in barn wood – with more than craftsman’s expertise and attention to clients’ details and needs. He ensures the continuation of a legacy centuries in the making. “We’re taking barns down that’ve been standing for 100 plus years, from wood that was growing 100 plus years before that, and we’re building a table that 100 years from now will be passed on to somebody else…That’s the real beauty of reclaimed wood.” See www.stlouishomesmag.com for more photos and resources. N’AWLINS, DAWLIN’S RIVERBEND SERVES UP CAJUN/CREOLE COMFORT BY BARBARA E. STEFANO PHOTOGRAPHY BY COLIN MILLER/STRAUSS PEYTON
Restaurateur Sam Kogos faithfully recreates the Cajun/Creole comfort food of his Louisiana upbringing at Riverbend Restaurant & Bar, right down to the Gulf Coast-sourced blue crab, shrimp and spice blend. Separated by nearly 700 miles, New Orleans and St. Louis are
28
nonetheless connected by their common French heritage and linked by life on the Mississippi River. An informal exchange has taken place between the two cities, with citizens and cuisine bridging the geographic divide. “I didn’t know when I came here that I’d run into so many people

with a Louisiana connection,” says Kogos, who married a Missourian and moved with her to her native St. Louis. Patrons at his family restaurant, likewise, are pleasantly surprised to get such a strong culinary expression of New Orleans so far from the Gulf. They stream into Riverbend for spicy classics like seafood gumbo, etouffee, Creole,
seafood po’boys and red beans and rice. “It’s a very traditional food – we’ve been cooking it that way for 30 years,” Kogos says. He leans heavily on time-tested staple recipes that have never failed to please. “We don’t stray too far from our theme. Most people come for the traditional dishes that come from New Orleans.”

Authenticity means forgoing seafood from Asia or New England in favor of ingredients that come right from the areas where Cajun/ Creole cooking was born. “It’s more expensive to get it from the Gulf than from Asia it’s supply and demand. There’s nothing wrong with all that stuff; it’s just not traditional to Louisiana food.” Kogos also sources Creole spices from his native Louisiana, going through about 50 pounds of the special blend every month. That, and an abundance of patience, are his secret ingredients to fl vor that is both straightforward and wholly complex. See www.stlouishomesmag.com for more information.

THE COOKING SCHOOL MENU PEEL-AND-EAT SHRIMP. This shrimp boil seems so simple, but Kogos soaks the shrimp to incorporate spices. He’s ready with tips on how to get the water to the perfect cooking temperature, as well as how to make a simple yet fl vorful remoulade for dipping. RED BEANS AND RICE. Kogos starts with hard beans, bay leaf, thyme, garlic, cayenne and a Creole spice blend that he has shipped from New Orleans. Tackle other tasks while it simmers. COMBO CREOLE. The fl vors of bell pepper, onion, tomato and creole spices marry in this dish, chock-full of gulf shrimp and crawfish. “Don’t rush it,” Kogos advises. “It’s got to cook down.” The spicy stew is served over white rice

Taking Their PLACE IN HISTORY Guarding the legacy of this century-old residence in the CWE, the owners have become part of its astonishing history.
Like many of St. Louis’ stately World’s Fair-era mansions, Patti and Kevin Short’s majestic three-story harbors a wealth of history between its walls. Fortunately, much of this landmark’s colorful story has been well documented over the years. It’s been a featured stop on the Central West End House Tour several times and even the subject of an HGTV episode. The Shorts have spent most of their 35-year marriage in the CWE – a convenient location for Kevin, CEO of Clayton Capital Partners and a civic philanthropist. The couple had fallen in love with the famed mansion and, when ready to move in 2001, were disappointed to learn that it wasn’t for sale. So, they settled for another home a few blocks away. But destiny called. Before they’d finished unpacking, the estate’s owner phoned to announce a change of plans and ask if they were still interested in purchasing. “It was easy,” Patti laughs. “We just moved our unopened boxes from one place to the other.” The next six months were spent refinishing the floor ,
upgrading the plumbing and electrical systems and installing central air. From the outset, however, “preservation” was Patti’s main objective. She diligently researched the home’s past and scoured antique stores and estate sales for authentic period furnishings. Designed and built by prominent St. Louis architect Jerome B. Legg from 1904-06, the styling of this 25-room, 11,000-square-foot residence has been variously described as Beaux Arts or Second Renaissance Revival. No expense was spared during construction, and it was undoubtedly the home’s sheer opulence that attracted its original owner, oil tycoon William Cullen McBride, known citywide for his extravagant social gatherings. In 1921, for example, McBride hosted a debutante ball for his daughter, Dorothy, and 500 guests, themed “A Night in Venice.” At an estimated cost of $2-$3 million in today’s dollars, a man-made moat was excavated on the property, and gondolas ferried party-goers across the water to a huge canvas structure erected for the festivities. Fast forward to the 1960s, when entertainment personality Stan Kann owned the property, comedienne Phyllis Diller was a frequent houseguest, and NBC asked Kann to host a cocktail party for The Tonight Show’s Johnny Carson and a “few of his friends” – a guest list that burgeoned to 400! Not long after becoming the estate’s newest owners, the Shorts met Kann at a social function. “That was my favorite house!” Kann exclaimed, and as the three exchanged memories, another sign of destiny emerged. Kann had once authorized a poster depicting the mansion with one of his numerous Pierce-Arrows parked in front and a caption reading, “My tastes are simple. I only like the best.” That same poster had hung in Kevin’s dorm room during his college years! Remarkably, most of the mansion’s lavish features have been faithfully preserved for more than a century, including the original oak floo ing, imported from Europe. Bordered with gold leaf, elaborate detailing and ornate plasterwork, the ceilings soar to 11 feet on the first and second floor , and pocket doors glide between 8-foot openings. Showcasing their original mantels, all nine fi eplaces were – and still are – fueled by gas. An exciting innovation at the time, the light fi tures were wired for electricity, with gas as a backup in the event of power failure. Off the vast columned foyer, the ladies’ parlor is often referred to as the “Wedgewood room,” due to its soft-blue walls and delicate white-plaster trim. Overhead, a circular Tiffa y oil painting in exquisite pastels dominates the ceiling and was commissioned specifically or this room. Opposite the ladies’ parlor is the music room, a bold contrast with its rich merlot and gold tones. In one corner is the Shorts’ family-owned Chickering piano, and flanking the elegant fireplace, a massive gilt-framed mirror balances French doors leading to the side porch. The merlot-and-gold color scheme is repeated in the striped wallpaper of the formal dining room, where the 12-foot mahogany table can easily seat ten. Patti notes that the massive antique crystal chandelier was a replacement for the original fi ture, but her 18 heirloom china settings have found their rightful place. Once belonging to her great-aunt, the French Haviland porcelain was fi ed in 1904, making it exactly the same age as the house. Although updated, the kitchen further demonstrates the Shorts’ commitment to preserving the home’s authenticity. Somewhat small by today’s standards, the kitchen’s dimensions weren’t altered, and the cabinetry was custom-designed for needed storage space, while accurately refle ting the style of the era. Once used exclusively for flower arranging, the adjacent room was converted to a cheerful breakfast room. The mansion’s grand staircase rises to an awe-inspiring solarium, where hand-blown lightbulbs are recessed into the 15-foot tray ceiling, prompting the owner to lament, “The bulbs are all original and can’t be reproduced.” Similarly irreplaceable, the solarium’s monumental radius windows are hand-painted with wisteria and separated by plaster columns and urns filled with plaster art leaves, a decorative motif fashionable in the

1920s. With justifiable pride, Patti mentioned that the leaves had been removed by a previous owner, but she managed to locate and reinstall them. Upstairs, it becomes evident that many of today’s “innovations” aren’t really new at all. Much like the modern loft, the expansive second-floor hall served as a “family room,” surrounded by the bedrooms. Formerly the McBrides’ master suite, the fi eside bedroom is now reserved for guests and features a hand-carved/painted frieze, the original electric sconces, even a laundry chute! Furnishings include a massive French bed from Louisiana, a gilt dressing table, and an inviting curved sofa in the sitting area. Totally original, the adjoining bath is a true eye-opener. The walls and ceiling are lined with marble; the radius windows are hand-painted; the tub is floo -mounted; and the pedestal sink is topped by a mirrored toiletry cabinet. And equipped with its own water heater, the separate shower enclosure is one of two in the home fit ed with full-body “needle” sprays and a rain shower head!

Bottom: Originally the McBrides’ master bedroom, this guest suite includes a sitting area furnished with a dazzling antique gilt dressing table.
Outside, the private drive passes under the porte-cochère to a 4,000-square-foot carriage house that once housed the McBrides’ coaches and stables (and later, Kann’s Pierce-Arrow collection). Part of the original estate grounds and currently occupied by a not-so-historic house, the adjacent property was also acquired by the Shorts, who
plan to convert the structure to a pool and guest house. Whether destiny, serendipity or merely coincidence, St. Louis is fortunate that this spectacular landmark is now home to a couple who genuinely treasure its historic significance and continue its legacy of gracious hospitality. MOVING back to St. Louis after living in Germany for several years, the Dubray family was ready to re-lay their roots in the Gateway to the West. With three boys, it was a top priority for Julie and Drew to design a home that was both elegant yet functional for their family. “We wanted our boys to want to be at home,” says Julie. With the help of interior designer Janice Rohan Hulse, Park Avenue Design, whom the homeowners met through a neighbor, their two-story Frontenac home is not only workable for all, but refle ts the worldly style they came to love. Janice was brought in at just the right time during the building process and helped with outlet placement, fabric choices and furniture purchasing and placement. Having previously lived in a ranch, the homeowners purchased mostly new furniture mixed with a few favorite old pieces. “Going from 8- to 10-foot ceilings, a lot of the existing furniture was too small for the new home,” Janice explains. To complement the new furnishings, artwork and accessories, a neutral palette was layered with color, especially subtle pops of aqua. The black-and-white flooring set on a diagonal creates a stunning effect in the dining room, where a six-foot, maple-topped round table with a spider-leg base can seat as many as 10. Another neutral aspect, the wallpaper is a charcoal tone-on-tone fili ree design. For a pop of color, Janice chose a vibrant multicolored fabric for the window treatments. “Her STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM

fabric choices are beautiful,” says Julie. In a house full of men, there isn’t much pink to be found anywhere. “This is where Julie could have her own touch of pink,” Janice says. In addition to incorporating pops of color, Janice also likes to juxtapose the finishes on furnishings and fi tures. For example, the console tables are made of rusty iron and topped with pieces of polished granite. “I like to contrast really finely finished pieces with crusty pieces of metal,” she says with a laugh.
46
In the kitchen, which connects to the dining room through a small bar area, Janice brings in the touch of roughness through the island and dining-area chandeliers. Their metal finish is a textural contrast to the sheer draperies, natural bleached-wood breakfast table and soapstone countertops with beautiful veining. The kitchen fi tures, as well as all the other light fi tures found throughout the home, were carefully selected to ensure continuity, yet each has its own differences to give the home a custom-selected look. For another custom look,

the kitchen cabinetry was custom-finished to fit the style of the home. Washed in an aqua-gray finish the cabinetry adds just a subtle touch of color in the otherwise natural, rustic space. Custom cabinetry also plays a major role in the décor in the great room, which features a stone fi eplace surrounded by custom-built bookshelves that house prized accessories from travel and family mementos. “Lots of attention was put into the finish to make sure it complemented the kitchen cabinetry,” Julie says.
A signature of Hennessy Construction, which built the home, the cathedral ceiling in the great room has a very German, warm feel. The real-wood ceiling complements the neutral furnishings and draperies. Janice zoned the space for a seating area with a separate confluence area for when the family entertains. The printed linen draperies set the tone for the color scheme as Janice pulled out neutrals to establish the wall color and fabric choices. A classic balloon chair is the statement piece in the seating area. The STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM

upholstered furniture is oversized because the large ceilings essentially makes the great room two stories, and “the room demanded and needed the extra weight,” Janice explains. A Turkish rug was a last-minute addition to the great room and was one of the pieces previously owned by the Dubrays. “Janice is great at building existing pieces into existing rooms,” Julie says. A study just off the great room is an ideal open space that can be used for entertaining or as a quiet spot to curl up with a good book. The fabric on the accent chairs and flora Designers Guild wallpaper speak to the conservatory feel of the space with the idea of bringing the outdoors in. The wallpaper has a Japanese-stencil look and picks up tones of aqua, gold and beige. The aqua tone is repeated in the finish of the hand-painted bookcases in the space. Janice also brought a touch of the outdoors into the master suite through the Designers Guild fabric on the window treatments. The soft floral print has touches of gray, lilac and lime green to freshen the bedroom. “The fabric was really the basis for the colors used in the bedroom and bathroom,” she says. Touches of lilac are found in the carpeting, bed linens and the wall color, which has a metallic finish. With all the subtle color in the space, Janice kept the furnishings more neutral. The natural headboard is raffia with nail head trim. Vaulted ceilings add spaciousness, and Janice worked in texture in the chandelier with its rusty, crusty washed-gold finish In the adjoining master bath, the lilac hue is repeated in the stone floo ing, wallcovering and wood trim, which has a lavender undertone. The freestanding acrylic tub looked a little too raw in the space. A custom-designed iron-framed bath canopy softens the tub. Playing with texture, color and size, designer Janice Rohan Hulse helped homeowners Julie and Drew Dubray create an elegant, sophisticated home that is still comfortable and liveable for their family of fi e. Inspired by their European travels, the grand residence is filled with ouches of panache. See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources and additional photos.

JUST APPROACHING DR. DEB CARLIN’S FRONT DOOR IS A TREAT. Stroll along the walk and you encounter a planter overfl wing with greenery that looks just like a red-rubber boot. Step a few more feet and encounter a colorful glass bauble refle ting light. In the autumn watch for pumpkins and squash tucked in among the plants. At the festive front porch seasonal ribbons twine their way through the wrought-iron railings and pumpkins, squash and mums cascade down the steps. “It is so interesting to sit back on the porch and watch people come up to the house,” Deb says. “I widened the sidewalk so two or three people can amble up together and look at things. By the time they get
52
to the front door, they are happy.” Deb Carlin is in the business of helping people get the most out of their lives. A psychologist, author and motivational speaker, her book “Build the Strength from Within” and subtitled “Create the Blueprint for Your Best Life Yet,” is written to help individuals find joy and be the best they can be in all phases of their lives. Her company Partners in Excellence works with businesses and organizations to help employees and members concentrate on their attitudes and perceptions to help them gain clarity and perform at their peak. An author who practices what she preaches, Deb uses her University City garden to build her own strength and find joy. It is hard for her to

remember a time when she wasn’t interested in gardening. Growing up in Chicago with parents who liked and appreciated being outside, she recalls lilacs and long lines of tulips welcoming spring and roses throughout the summer. In her own life, she sees gardening as a way of staying balanced. Noting that most of us today are insulated, isolated and “hermetically sealed in apartments, condos and homes,” gardening is “about being outdoors and getting sweaty and dirty,” she explains with a laugh. Her garden, she adds, “grounds me, and it is amazing how much joy it brings to other people. “Every month, every season, there is something to celebrate,” she emphasizes. Rather than looking at fall and the coming winter as
depressing, Deb sees “autumn as a beautiful change of color” as her garden shifts from the bright colors of summer to the muted orange and golds of fall. “I plant mums and bring in pumpkins and squash that are beautiful but also edible. It’s a time to harvest and dry herbs.” Rather than leaves falling, she likes to think of trees as “letting go of their leaves, standing tall and resting so they can replenish themselves in the quiet of winter and be productive in the next season." When winter comes officiall on Dec. 21, Deb celebrates the winter solstice by inviting friends to a luminaria with candles lighting her front walk. “When they get up to the front door, they see the (inside) staircase lit by candles and the 100 percent of the house lit by candles. They always STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM

come in and relax,” she says. Throughout the winter, garden pots and hanging baskets remain in place, filled with winter greens. Deb concentrates on appreciating the architecture of the trees and shrubs without their leaves. She also hides decorative touches around the garden in summer that can only be seen in winter when the plants lose their leaves. When she entertains, she still does it in her garden. “I have guest coats and guest blankets,” she explains. “We all go outside and sit around the fi e pit, talk and laugh and drink glogg, a Swedish spiced wine made from a family recipe. I have old-fashioned, speckled metal dinnerware I bring out for the winter.” When she moved into her house more than 20 years ago, Deb
54
recalls having an immediate vision of what the yard could become. “There was an old, plastic greenhouse and a barbeque pit that I got rid of,” she recalls. In place of those relics, she planted 47 trees, 11 of them dogwoods, that “provide shade, fl wers and fruit. In spring the garden looks like an Impressionist painting. “ In addition, she erected a wood privacy fence that she now uses as a “blank canvas” on which to hang a variety of decorative items. Particularly prominent is a large melon-colored door with mirrors where there would normally be glass. “Then you look at it, it appears to be a pathway to another garden…. and it is…a garden of the imagination,” Deb explains. Favorite plants include her big blue hostas with their fragrant blossoms and the sweet-

smelling Miss Kim lilac planted next to the deck. From the deck on the back of the house to the pathways and different seating areas throughout the garden, there are whimsical and beautiful objects to admire. “Some of the things have been with me my entire life,” she says. Many are gifts from friends; others are spur of the moment purchases. One of her favorite places to shop is Garden Heights nursery in Richmond Heights. “The joke there is how many things can I get in my car when I am ready to leave,” Deb says with a laugh. While Deb does much of the work in the garden herself, she also relies on Ron Goedeker of Landscape St. Louis for the literal heavy lifting. People look at her garden and are often overwhelmed at the work
it takes to keep it up, Deb notes. But she sees the work in terms of rewards….”watching the beautiful birds and talking to the crazy squirrels." “I like to sleep with the windows open because I love all the sounds in the garden,” she explains. “I love the beginning chirp of the birds in the pre-dawn. I like to be in the garden with night receding and the dawn presenting at the beginning of a new day. None of us know how many more days we will have. You can’t take a new day for granted. We need to celebrate the beauty of life. We only get one shot at it, and we better value it.” See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

PONYTAIL PALM OR ELEPHANT FOOT PALM
“Beaucarnea recurvata (Ponytail Palm or Elephant Foot Palm) is my favorite indoor plant. This unique plant gets both common names from its most distinguishing characteristics: the curled, bouncy foliage and the rough, bulbous base. As a succulent, it requires very little water and consistent sunlight to maintain a slow, but steady growth. Mine sits happily on the windowsill in my offic and gets watered once or twice a week.” Katy Molaskey, Green Guys.

The Climatron More than 2,800 plants grow inside the Climatron at the Missouri Botanical Garden. BY HOLLY BERTHOLD PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF MISSOURI BOTANICAL GARDEN
Treat out-of-town holiday guests to a walk through the Climatron速 at the Missouri Botanical Garden. The Climatron is the first geodesic dome to be used as a conservatory, incorporating the principles of R. Buckminster Fuller, inventor of the geodesic system. The Climatron opened to the public on October 1, 1960. The Climatron has no interior support and no columns from floor to ceiling, allowing more light and space per square foot for plants than conventional designs. It rises 70 feet in the center, spans 175 feet in diameter at the base, has 1.3 million cubic feet and encloses approximately 24,000 square feet. The interior of the Climatron is designed on a tropical-rainforest theme, highlighting diversity and ecology. Visitors enter and immediately experience the tropics: dense green foliage, a small native hut, sparkling waterfalls, rocky cliffs, a river aquarium with exotic fish and a bridge from which the forest canopy and associated plants can be viewed. More than 2,800 plants, including 1,400 different tropical species, grow inside the Climatron. They include banana, cacao, coffee, many wild-collected plants, colorful orchids and exotic, rare plants such as the double coconut, which produces the largest seed in the plant kingdom. A large collection of cycads, primitive gymnosperms with massive, divided leaves, are also on display. Several pools and waterfalls give a sense of lushness, as if visitors were within a true tropical rainforest. The Climatron is an ever-changing, impressive display all year long. Tending to the king of
ITALIAN WHITE GRAPE Pinot Grigio reigns supreme in Friuli-Venezia Giulia BY LORRAINE RAGUSEO PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF QUINTESSENTIAL WINES
Like the stylish “boot” that it is, Italy has long been in the vanguard of world wine production, with a storied history going back, no surprise, to ancient Rome. While red wines have dominated most of Italy’s top vineyards, a notable exception lies at the top of the boot, in or near the foothills of the Alps. The eastern part of Italy’s coolest region - closest to the borders with Austria and Slovenia - is known as Friuli-Venezia Giulia. It is a crossroads of people, cultures and history, with borders that have shifted back and forth over the centuries. In the 12th century, it was part of the Mediterranean spice route between Byzantium and Venice - throughout the Middle Ages, merchants brought grapevines from Macedonia and Anatolia. Later, it was part of the Hapsburg Empire, bringing French influences and varietals like Cabernet Sauvignon. In the 19th century, the region served as a major Mediterranean port for the Teutonic Austro-Hungarian Empire. Finally, in 1870 with the country’s unification, it became pa t of modern Italy.
62
White grapes reign here, with names like Friulano, Ribolla Gialla, Pinot Bianco. But, the undisputed king of this region is Italy’s most famous white grape - Pinot Grigio. Pinot Grigios, particularly from the sub-region of Collio Gorizia, are considered the ultimo among Italian white-wine connoisseurs. There are approximately 150 wineries of all sizes in Friuli-Venezia Giulia. The family-owned Ascevi Luwa is typical of the smaller, artisanal wineries found nestled among gently rolling hills covered with vineyards, cherry trees and acacia woods, very close to the Slovenian border. It is near the town of San Floriano del Collio that Mariano Pintar and his wife Loredana planted their first vineyard on a small plot of land in 1972. This was no easy task as the land, known by the old Italian name “Cerou,” was mostly forest that had to be cleared before the vines could be planted. The early 20th century history of the region was as tumultuous as past centuries. During World War I, these border lands were the scene

of many battles and was a major theater of operations during the Great War. More than 50 years later, when Mariano started excavating his land, he found old, unexploded bombs as well as bomb fragments and debris from homes, barns and cars destroyed during the war. Their removal was costly and time consuming. Mariano and Loredana persevered, resulting in what is today some of the most beautiful and highly rated vineyards in the region, covering over 30 hectares in the Collio DOC and Friuli Isonzo zones, traditional areas for fine wines. A large percentage of those vineyards produce a very high-quality Pinot Grigio named Cerou to root the wine in this special place. It boasts fruity and fl wery fl vors that are the true nature of Pinot Grigio – and too often lacking in Pinot Grigios produced in other parts of Italy, and around the world. Over the past few years, Luana and Walter, the owners' children, have taken up roles in the business to help Mariano and his wife on the family-run wine estate – in fact, the “Luwa” in the winery’s name is a
This unusual, sweet sauce is often paired with potato gnocchi or delicate fresh pasta cut into wide ribbons. FOR THE PASTA: • 2 tablespoons salt • 1 pound fresh egg tagliatelle or reginette FOR THE SAUCE: • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter • 2 ounces poppy seeds • 1/4 cup sugar Make the pasta: Bring 5 quarts of water to a boil. Add the salt and the pasta. Cook until al dente, then drain, reserving about 2 cups of the pasta cooking water. Meanwhile, make the sauce. Warm the butter in a small skillet over medium heat. Add the poppy seeds and warm through until aromatic, about 2 minutes. Keep warm. Transfer the drained pasta to a large serving platter and toss with the warm poppy seed butter. Add some of the reserved pasta cooking water as needed to thin out the sauce. It should coat the pasta nicely. Sprinkle with the sugar, and toss again. Serve hot.
combination of Luana and Walter’s first name . The region’s history also informs the traditional dishes that the Pintar family has long enjoyed...and that Luana and Walter were raised on. Slavic, Austrian and Hungarian influences are apparent in dishes like fresh pasta with poppy seeds and sugar, a sweet pasta recipe not found anywhere else in Italy that can be made either with potato gnocchi or long, wide tagliatelle noodles, or roasted savoy cabbage and crispy bacon. Featuring hot Hungarian paprika, it’s a dish that wouldn’t look out of place on a table in Budapest, except for the Italian bacon (Pancetta) and fine Northern Italian Ascevi Luwa Cerou Pinot Grigio in the glass next to it. These dishes make for a satisfying supper during a St. Louis October, as the weather turns cooler...and true Pinot Grigio fans know that they can enjoy the king of Italian white wines with such fare, all year long. Even the hippest bachelor pad needs a few soft touches!
Exposed brick, raw concrete walls, polyurethane subfloors and a steel door leading to nowhere – need we say more? It was the industrial look that drew Michael Henderson to his 3,000-square-foot home in an eight-story commercial-turned-residential building that opened as Sporting News back in 1923. There’s just one problem with the unrefined aesthetic: “My job,” explains Henderson, “is extremely stressful. I need warmth and serenity when I come home.” Henderson brought on designer Tamsin Mascetti of the award-winning Tamsin Design Group because, he says, “She has the ability to do traditional design in a very creative way.” The unpolished space turned out to be a perfect backdrop for a living-dining combo that’s both contemporary
66
and calming. “I wanted to create a chic look that blended my client’s modern tastes and eclectic style,” Mascetti elaborates. Off the bat, she traded the existing unit’s orange-and-beige hues for a cooler palette of rich blues, grays and cream designed to contrast with the floors and metal accents. The first design element Mascetti chose was that mod Louis Poulsen PH Artichoke Pendant hanging in the living room. The designer fi ture is always getting complements, with its wet, painted-white finish, feminine shape and unusual glow. “It demanded a masculine counterpart,” Mascetti says. Hence, the oversized leather sectional underneath, adorned with gray and cream geo pillows and two striped custom footrests that double as extra seating.

Now it was time to add some serious warmth – literally. Henderson says Mascetti gets the credit for what he calls his 100-foot fi eplace. “Everything I saw was small, and I wanted this ginormous fi eplace that we could put way up high,” Henderson elaborates. Underneath, a mocha credenza for dishes, blankets and photos amps up the comfort level; so does a custom gray silk-shag area rug. Large and funky Kellex chairs frame impressive 16-foot windows overlooking Schlafly Bottleworks. Creamy roller shades afford Henderson some privacy, while letting light in. Those rays fl w all the way into Henderson’s dining area, featuring an expanding dark walnut table and custom Kellex round-back chairs in a masculine stripe by Wolf Gordon that was inspired by the Ernest

Trova print hung behind them. For tactual interest, Mascetti put down an ABC Carpet & Home vintage patchwork rug sewn of various pieces of over-dyed kilim rugs. Henderson scooped his vintage bar himself from an antique store; along with a sheer-black pendant from Restoration Hardware, the piece establishes a sophisticated atmosphere. “I knew my client wanted a statement piece, so I searched for something as unique as his style,” says Mascetti. She nailed it with one amazing finishing touch: the original, vintage Warhol Chanel bottle poster, sourced through a dealer in Chicago. “With it's saturated blue-yellow colors, it was the perfect fit” Mascetti adds. Brilliantly Blue A SLEEK AND ELEGANT LOWER LEVEL IS DESIGNED WITH ADULTS AND KIDS IN MIND. BY MELISSA MAUZY PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANNE MATHEIS
72
It started the same way many renovation projects start… with a simple desire to switch up some accessories and freshen up the lower level. But this renovation story quickly took a different turn. “We started dreaming, and once we started dreaming it turned into a whole remodel,” says designer CJ Knapp, who recently formed her own interior design fi m Yours By Design. Knapp, in conjunction with Savvy Surrounding Style, worked with the homeowner to transform their dated lower level into a place for mom to enjoy with her teenage boys in mind. “The lower level originally was designed to withstand big groups of teenage boys,” the homeowner says. “It was boring and bland but indestructible. We wanted to make it a space that adults could hang out with a contemporary feel.”

BEFORE & AFTER_1015.indd 72
9/11/15 2:38 PM
The catalyst that set the direction of the design in motion was a deep Prussian blue-and-silver fabric the homeowner fell in love with. Paired with shades of gray, from flint to charcoal, and contrasted with silver accents, the color scheme is carried across the three spaces. In the two TV areas, carpet was replaced with walnut distressed wood. Different, but complementary, area rugs distinguish the spaces. The fireplace in the seating area is covered with slate and trimmed with amber glass tiles. The mantel was enlarged and topped with a custom glass sculpture from Savvy Surrounding Style. “The changes to the fi eplace really make the gold and slate pop, Knapp says. For seating, Knapp knew she needed chairs that were not only stylish and comfortable but also covered in fabrics that STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM OCTOBER 2015

teenagers couldn’t hurt. The four custom one-and-a-half chairs are upholstered in a rich blue fabric with silver leather on the outside for durability. Initially, the designer and homeowner were challenged by how to use the sitting area. “We had a hard time figu ing out what to do with that space,” the homeowner says. “I am very pleased with the arrangement CJ came up with. It looks great, and we use it all the time.” Sleek, oversized seating with contemporary lines makes the adjacent TV area chic and inviting. A silver leather ottoman is on wheels making it easy to move to create more seating. The bookcases flan ing the TV are original to the house and accessories were added to enhance what the homeowner already had. The media cabinet under the TV establishes a focal point in the space. Cast silver accent tree branches form the legs of the storage unit and tie in the silver found throughout.

In the pool-table area, a commercial-grade carpet was selected to withstand traffi fl wing into the lower level from the pool. A bistro table gives height. Knapp suggested the homeowner change the felt on the existing pool table to transform the look. “It is an easy way to give the area a new look,” she explains. Tying the entire space together are contemporary, bubble light fi tures and the repeated use of swirls and circles. Besides the sleek and elegant look of the new space, the best part about the lower-level remodel is that all the pieces work together and could be mixed in various ways if the homeowner ever moved. “I don’t like cookie-cutter rooms,” Knapps says. “I don’t think colors should match perfectly.” With shades of blue and gray, Knapp proves you can do a lot with paint, shapes and texture. Artfully Blending Old and New Today’s home design leans more towards the eclectic than ever before. Blending genres, periods, patterns and colors has become an art form, in and of itself. The objective is to create an art collection in which the individual pieces complement each other as opposed to fighting against each other. Though perhaps a bit more of a challenge, the result is a unique and sophisticated space and a collector who has broadened their knowledge and appreciation for various styles and periods. Stephanie Stokes, Gallery manager of the Kodner Gallery, sees many younger collectors who prefer modern and contemporary art and design inheriting traditional artwork and furnishings from family members. Since these are heirloom pieces, it is important for them to display them and successfully mix them into their decor. She also sees traditional-style homes in Clayton and University City, for example, being purchased by young families with a more modern and contemporary taste in art and design seeking guidance on preserving the charming elements of these homes, such as stained glass and ornate woodworking, while highlighting the homeowner’s personal and updated style. Mixing contemporary artwork with traditional furnishings, and vice
78
Create a collection with individual pieces that complement one another.
versa, requires a keen eye for complementary pieces. For example, a traditional upholstered chair can highlight a corresponding color in an abstract painting. Contrasting elements, such as hard with soft or square with round, help to keep a room balanced and comfortable. For example, traditional furniture tends to have a bolder look with deeper colors and ornate details, as compared to today's more minimal furnishings. These heavier pieces are balanced well by the flat, solid colors of abstra t paintings. Attention should also be paid to size, scale, shape and color so that one aspect of a room does not overwhelm the space. A focal point or statement piece in a room is great, but it shouldn’t be the only thing you notice. When done well, combining styles can bring out the best aspects of each piece. When investing in quality artwork and furnishings, it is important that both are highlighted equally. The result is a well-rounded space with a clean, yet cozy feeling, ideal for today’s young couples and families. See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

Treasure A HIDDEN
Escape the modern-day frenzy to the serene hills of the Great Smoky Mountains at Blackberry Farm, a luxurious resort with breathtaking scenery, gourmet cuisine and ample amenities.
BY GINA CHRISTMAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY BEALL+THOMAS PHOTOGRAPHY
True to its reputation, Blackberry Farm is a smart, polished big hitter with a surprisingly gentle soul. The resort is a continually evolving jewel where the perfectly pitched nature-nurture approach is considered the gold standard. Designed with the utmost respect and appreciation for the Tennessee foothills and its natural bounty, Blackberry Farm is authentic in every way. Guests are pampered, yes, but also invited to participate in the process if they so choose. They can spend time with the master gardener, learn the heritage, history and art of harvesting and seed saving, and even work the fields (which is known to enhance mental and emotional well-being, lower blood pressure and boost the immune system). There are also cooking classes, visits with the preservationist and beekeeper, and demonstrations of everything from pickling, to cheese making to charcuterie—all done on property. Within this gastro-centric paradise, the focus is on wellness. Fitting, then, that one year ago The Wellhouse Spa was conceived as the next step in proprietor and visionary Sam Beall’s plan to foster healthy lifestyles. The anchor for Beall’s philosophy is the resort’s restorative bounty, along with his conviction that wholesome choices make for a healthful and fulfilling life that balances physical, mental and social wellbeing. The Wellhouse at Blackberry Farm, now a year old, is in a forward lunge. The spa has found its natural rhythm in connecting itself to the surrounding land. The menu of treatments features locally sourced

products, along with healing plants and fl wers offered on a seasonal basis. “Our philosophy of wellness at Blackberry Farm is rooted in balance,” says director of wellness Amanda Anderson. “Our goal is to help guests relax and renew, while nurturing sustainable habits for a healthy lifestyle after their stay is over.” Guests come to The Wellhouse to relax, refresh, and learn to live and feel better. Choice is the guiding principle, with a wide range of programs and experiences designed to help guests become more aware of themselves and their surroundings. Here is a tiny sampling of what to expect: SMOKEY MOUNTAIN SKIN GLOW – sweet scrub and skin conditioning using a blend of pomegranate seed, orange peel powder and essential oils, followed by a private steam bath and full body massage with nutrient-rich body butter. CRUZE FARM BUTTERMILK AND LAVENDER-WILDFLOWER HONEY – manicure or pedicure that combines the benefits of amino acid-rich, locally sourced buttermilk with nature’s perfect humectant, honey, to soothe and soften hands and feet. NATURAL FARM-FRESH REFUVENATION FACIAL – uses Tata Harper’s 100% natural products featuring ingredients grown on her family farm and packed with botanical vitamins, minerals, omegas and antioxidants. Upgrade to a longer version that finishes with a Cruze Farm Buttermilk Mask. The Wellhouse offers regular strength and fitness options, too. Group

classes include zumba, barre, dance fusion, cardio-core circuit and more. One-on-one sessions feature personal training, private dance instruction, TRX and stretch and foam rolling release. Wellness activities extend beyond the spa. For best use of the fresh mountain air, head into the woods for yoga, meditation, EarthFit Endurance Hike or Run, or the Japanese-inspired forest bathing—quietly walking and exploring, with all senses open to every sound, scent, color and “feel” of the forest, buzzing in its bio-diversity. The goal is to “bathe” each physical cell in your body along with your entire psyche in the forest’s essence. For the sports-minded, there is fly fishin , mountain biking, tour kayaking, tennis, swimming and stand-up paddle boarding, to be followed by (of course) a Deep Woods Muscle Recovery Massage or an in-room couples massage, complete with Champagne, chocolate-covered strawberries and a drawn bath. As rustic and ruggedly unspoiled as the resort is, there is simply no escaping the luxury. See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

PLACES TO GO, THINGS TO DO AND SEE, AND PEOPLE WHO ARE LEAVING THEIR MARK ON THE WORLD OF STYLE. BY MELISSA MAUZY
Fusion Marketing PHOTOGRAPHY BY KIM DILLON
Fusion Marketing moved into its current location on Locust in 2012. Once the Missouri Light & Power building, the space is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. Paradowski Creative, the former occupants of the building, in conjunction with Nehring Design and HBD Contracting, took on the renovation ensuring special care was taken to follow historic rehabilitation and LEED guidelines. The result is a modern warehouse bursting with colors, textures and shapes. Many pieces of the original building were repurposed during the
construction process. Varying ceiling heights, colors and lighting divides the ground floor into multi-functioning spaces. In the main work area, iron posts frame individual cubes with hanging space dividers allowing the layout to continually change over time. A brick patio, accessible from the employee lunch room through an overhead door, was repurposed from bricks found in and around the building. A second-floor mezzanine houses more offic , work areas and meeting space.
Theatre for a New Audience at Polonsky Shakespeare Center, Brooklyn, NY PHOTOGRAPHY BY Š 2013 FRANCIS DZIKOWSKI/OTTO
The Theatre for a New Audience at Polonsky Shakespeare Center serves as a laboratory for modern theatrical interpretation of classical plays. The fi m H3 Hardy Collaboration Architecture served as the designer, and the new building brings a new presence to the Brooklyn Academy of Music Cultural District. The simple form of the building belies its structural complexity and intricate acoustical isolation from the city’s exterior and

subterranean noise. The exterior skin is covered in large gunmetal gray metal panels. The volume of the building projects outward from its site with the second-floor lobby dramatically cantilevering over the main entrance below. The 299-seat proscenium theater sets a stark contrast to the naturally lit lobby. The finishes and furniture in the theater are all black with no visual distraction from the activity on stage.

Danish National Maritime Museum PHOTOGRAPHY BY (SEE INDIVIDUAL PICTURES)
The Danish Maritime Museum is located between one of Denmark’s most important and famous buildings, the Kronborg Castle, and the Culture Yard, a new, ambitious cultural center. The fi m BIG proposed to place the museum underground just outside the wall of the dock in order to preserve the dock as an open outdoor display. The 60-year-old dock walls were left untouched, and the galleries are below ground and arranged in a continuous loop around the dock walls. There are a series
of three double-level bridges that span the dry dock and connect museum visitors to different sections of the museum. By placing the museum underground, it appears as part of the cultural environment associated with the Kronborg Castle and the Culture Yard, while also manifesting itself as an independent institution. The dock creates a museum space as a cohesive floor plan, which discreetly becomes lower and lower across the entire museum length. STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM OCTOBER 2015

IS IT A CLASSIC OR IS IT A CRAZE
CLASSIC “Classic. Whether it is a real or faux hide, I feel animal print brings nature, interest, pattern, and in some cases, texture, into most design styles. Usually a splash goes a long way. That being said, the print may not always be for everyone.” Pamela Calvert, ASID. “It is my opinion that the use of animal print in the home will always be a classic design statement. Both natural and faux animal skins have been incorporated into interior designs for centuries. They are exotic and add a touch of nature to almost any design style. However, a little goes a long way. A carpet, a pillow or a chair is enough to introduce the animal print into one's design." Tom Manche, Tom Manche Interiors. “I love a great cheetah-print pillow or zebra rug as an accent in designing a room. It’s defini ely a classic! The pattern in an animal print is a fun complement to any scheme. It adds a punch, but the coloration is neutral. My favorite is an antique dining-room chair fabricated with a hide seat. Red wine spills...no worries.” Lynn Eastin, Lynn Eastin Interiors.
ANNE MATHEIS PHOTOGRAPHY
For our October Design issue, we asked local interior designers if ANIMAL PRINT is a classic or a craze. Here’s what they had to say.
“Animal prints are classic! They've been around for a long time. I don't see them going away. They are always great for an accent piece like a pillow, ottoman or small armchair. Animal prints also work well to become either the focal point or background of a room when used as a rug. They give the right amount of ‘punch’ for added texture, pattern and luxury! Defini ely classic!” Teresa Drury, Textures Interior Design. “Animal prints can act as neutrals in almost any space, making them a truly classic design element. They are seasonless and will look fabulous when paired with just about anything. Animal prints are as timeless as the color black and can add a little edge to any design.” Mary Beth Leritz, LuLu Belles Fabrics. “Animal prints are a classic. When I was in Africa 20 years ago it was everywhere, and it is still around now. I thought maybe it would be a craze, but it is a classic. Though styles and furnishings have changed, animal prints in fabrics are still in. We sell a lot of animal print at Imogene's." Clarice Wheeler, Imogene's.
“Defini ely a classic. I am not the first person to say this and likely won't be the last, but every room should have a touch of animal print!” Joni Spear, Joni Spear Interior Design.
