I love bringing all the boxes marked “Christmas” up from our downstairs storage room and beginning to figure out what decorations will go where and what remains in the box this season. It’s almost like Christmas morning. Everything in each box is carefully wrapped in newspaper, so I’m never quite sure what each will unfold. As I unwrap, fond memories from past Christmases consume me like viewing an old photo album. The mermaid ornament from a good friend and the handmade angel ornament from another are just a few of the many ornaments I’ve collected over the years. Ornaments have the uncanny power of bringing back memories of good times. And ornaments can be very specific in their type and style. Do you have a friend that you don’t know what to give her for the holidays? Consider giving her an ornament. It will become a reminder of your friendship for years to come.

It only seemed fitting to have ornaments featured in this issue. And in order to pull that off, we had every kind of Christmas ornament you can imagine in every nook and cranny in our art department. And with dozens of possible November/December cover candidates hanging on the walls, it felt like the holiday season had officially arrived for us at the magazine. And if by chance the holiday bug hasn’t caught up with you yet, we are sure this issue will get you in the festive spirit real fast!

Mississippi Mud Coffee Roasters roast in the flavors and leave out the mud By Sylvia Forbes Photography by Colin Miller/Strauss Peyton
Everybody knows that smell—that flavorful, permeating, eye-opening aroma wafting through places as diverse as home kitchens, restaurants, cafés, potlucks and weddings. Yes, we're talking about coffee, that ubiquitous drink served at every occasion. But some coffee just tastes better than others. What's the difference? Master roasters Christopher Ruess and Shane Mosby share a few secrets. Chris took an international course in coffee roasting, learning every aspect from bean characteristics and types of roasters to roasting methods. With the new title of Master Roaster in hand, in 2004 he started Mississippi Mud Coffee Roasters. He won over St. Louisans with his great blends and expanded when Shane Mosby became a partner in 2008. Shane learned the roasting ropes from Chris, also became a master roaster and now does the roasting duties for the company. “There are three important aspects to making a great cup of coffee,” says Chris. “First is to use the best quality beans you can buy. The flavor of the beans varies with the soil, the altitude, how they're grown, how they're dried and many other aspects. We buy only top-market beans, because we want the best flavor. We cup each of them to determine their individual aromas and flavors. “Good roasting is the second aspect. That's where Shane steps in. Each bean has its own taste profile. We roast the beans to bring out their best flavor. Big companies roast about 500 pounds of coffee at a time. We roast in small batches of about 30 pounds, so we can control every aspect of the roast." The third aspect of roasting is freshness. “We roast and
deliver our beans to over 30 St. Louis area coffee houses, cafés, restaurants and Dierbergs Markets," Chris says. Mississippi Mud strives to roast within 24 hours of delivery, so that their customers are getting the freshest beans possible. “Making a great coffee is a lot like making wine,” explains Chris. “When you buy coffee, you buy 'the roaster and his palate.'" The biggest seller is the Mississippi Mud Coffee, a breakfast blend made of Guatemalan and Colombian beans. Another popular blend is the Up All Night coffee, which has a higher content of caffeine. Mocha Java is a blend that lots of roasters use. It must be made from Java beans, and the 'mocha' part of the title doesn't mean that it contains chocolate—it means that it is shipped from the port of Mocha, Indonesia. Their new coffee house recently opened at 1223 Pine St., in the former headquarters of the Missouri Pacific Railroad. They've partnered with Art Saint Louis to create a gallery/ café with changing art exhibitions and free wi-fi. They currently offer espresso drinks, coffee beans and pastries; plans include adding new menu items. This fall, customers will be able to order beans and coffee equipment online through their website www.mississippimudcoffee.com. Also, they're starting a program, called Community Beans, in which a portion of each retail sale will be earmarked for worthy local causes. SLHL: What are the advantages to a wood-burning fireplace? Austin: Wood burning is what most people expect in a fireplace. There are several types of wood-burning fireplaces. The first is pre-fab, which consists of a metal box with an air-cooled pipe and does not produce heat since it does not have a sealed combustion area. The other types are high-efficiency wood-burning fireplaces, which require a stainless insulated chimney pipe with sealed doors and blowers which provide a great heat output, and full-masonry custom built on site by a brick or stone mason. If you do not purchase a high-efficiency wood-burning fireplace, you will be losing more heat than you gain from the fireplace.

SLHL: What is the difference between a vented fireplace and a ventless? Austin: A vented fireplace vents to the outdoors, and ventless or vent-free is a unique burner system that does not require any venting to the outside due to the efficient clean-burning design. Both have been manufactured for years, and each has its place. Vent-free products operate at 99 percent efficiency, burn the cleanest of all and have the added safety feature of an ODS pilot system that is constantly monitoring the oxygen level in the room as it operates. SLHL: What do you recommend to update an existing fireplace? Austin: Several things can be done to update a wood-burning fireplace. Add new doors in a new finish such as oil-rubbed bronze, brushed nickel or classic black. Doors also come in a variety of styles and finishes: arched; rectangular; inside custom fit or overlap; mission; heavy iron, or combination finishes. Switch to gas if you’re tired of wood burning. Another option would be to add a gas glass burner system and select a complementary color of glass. We’ve done black reflective, bronzes, blues, icy white and platinum. When chef Cassy Vires and her husband Josh Renbarger opened Home Wine Kitchen--a Maplewood eatery dedicated to traditional, scratch-made cooking with local and artisanal ingredients--in 2011, they wanted to create an environment and experience for diners that brings out the best parts of food and drink in our lives. Miraculously, they’ve succeeded in doing just that on a daily basis. But for Cassy, the nearest and dearest of food memories revolve around Thanksgiving. This year’s Thanksgiving Dinner at Home Wine Kitchen features family-style dining with a cornucopia of beautiful and creative dishes. A breadbasket of bacon muffins, buttermilk cornbread and pumpkin loaf is accompanied with house-made spreads such as apple butter, jalapeno jelly and maple butter. Whether it was leaving cookies and milk for Santa, putting your favorite ornament on the prime spot on the tree or stringing popcorn for garland, some holiday traditions carry over from year to year. After moving into their new Frontenac home, the owner wanted to incorporate touches of her childhood Christmases into her

always know where each ornament or accent is going to go, she buys what she likes and finds a place for it. It is really all about playing around with the décor, she says. “I just keep adding until I feel there is enough to make the space look complete,” she explains, which is the hardest part.

Last year, the homeowner worked with a designer at Savvy Surrounding Style to bring in fresh ideas as well as new décor. Her ornaments are more customary, while fillers such as feathers and other accents bring a more contemporary feel. Basing her design on the traditional holiday scheme of red, green, silver and gold, she tried to keep each room in

ornaments. “The table is a hodgepodge of various elements,” she says. “My original plan was too sparse, so we added to it." With such a large table, the centerpiece needed to make a statement. Silver reindeer candleholders combine with silver-wrapped gifts, glistening red trees of varying heights and greenery. Black glitter placemats sit on top of the black runner custom made to fit the table. Mixing textures and heights gives the tablescape dimension. Across from the dining room, the entry seating area glistens in gold and platinum, which complement the room’s existing furnishings and décor. Highlights of the space include two gold reindeer from Savvy Surrounding Style sparkling in silver-lined niches, glittered cone-shaped trees and a grouping of gifts and ornaments on the glass table. The focal point of the space is a tree decked in shades of gold and silver ornaments with feathers and ribbon. “It is fun to bring in a lot of textures and varying sizes,” the homeowner says. The adjoining kitchen and family room blend red and gold, a color scheme the homeowner’s mother always had growing up and which was important to her to incorporate. In the kitchen, glass containers are filled with ornaments from years past. To add color against the dark counter, the homeowner added a swag of red fabric. On the kitchen table, more ornaments pair with ribbon and a gold spiral tree. Reindeer again make an appearance in the kitchen, as two stand tall on the dining table. The family room features a cheerful, friendly Santa purchased 10 years ago at Macy’s. “Santa has made an appearance somewhere in our home every year for the past 10 Christmases,” the homeowner says. On the tree, clusters of luminous ornaments in reds and golds vary in size as your eyes travel around the tree. Drawing on inspiration from childhood as well as holiday tradition, this Frontenac homeowner has created a contemporary holiday home filled with texture and shining with Christmas color. Holiday décor takes its cue from the Old World styling of this extraordinary custom home in Webster Groves. “Subtle and muted” aren’t words one typically associates with the colors of the holiday season. But that was this homeowner’s objective as she planned for Yuletide festivities in the spectacular custom home in Webster Groves that she and her family have enjoyed since its completion in May of 2011. Lavished with wood and stone, inside and out, the multi-level residence is a fashionable blend of French and Tuscan styling that evokes the Old World charm of a rustic European country manor. Set on 2.5 exquisitely landscaped acres, the home encompasses 5,700 square feet on the main and upper levels, another 1,100 square feet on the finished lower level and a spacious bonus area, used as a media room, above the garage. Decorating a home of this size for the holidays might seem a bit daunting, but the owner was excited by the prospect of “starting over with a new house.”“I wanted to complement the décor of each room, and it was a group effort,” she explains, crediting her landscape designers, Kim Kelce and Nancy Pedley of Kelce & Pedley Design, for their gifted assistance. Favorite ornaments saved from the family’s previous home were relegated to the Christmas tree in the lower-level activity area, and attention focused on creating a cohesive holiday theme for the primary entertainment/living spaces. Striking stone walls line the entry foyer, which showcases an antique French console inset with semi-precious gems, c. 1850, from Kyle Antiques in New Orleans. The holiday mood is immediately established by a collection of gold reindeer and tall gold candleholders, artfully grouped on the console. A swag of dried magnolia leaves drapes the large, gilt-framed mirror, fabricated by Frame of Mind, and an arrangement of magnolia leaves, dried hydrangea, red twigs and faux berries centers the foyer’s antique walnut pedestal table. Open to the foyer, the two-story great room is spanned by massive reclaimed timber beam trusses and dominated by a carved French limestone fireplace from Francois & Co., surmounted by a Venetian-style mirror from Restoration Hardware. Positioned in front of the great room windows is an annual family tradition – a fresh-cut Douglas fir, and the owner opted to design the trimmings for this year’s 10-foot version herself, noting, “I wanted a romantic look, in keeping with the room’s décor.” Simulating the soft blue-gray tones of the space, she chose French-style mercury glass ornaments, feathered birds and a large satin bow, accented with silver poinsettias and coppery pinecones.

Lining the mantel are remote-controlled, flickering LED candles in mercury glass holders, and a swag of fresh magnolia leaves, centered with another blue-gray bow and interwoven with glitter-encrusted pinecones, reinforces the romantic ambience. The home is ideal for large gatherings, prompting the owner to remark, “We can seat up to 50 guests for dinner.” And the formal dining room is a showstopper, starting with its imposing wood entry doors by Dave Dixon of Strange Imports in Colorado. Dixon purchases and restores antique furnishings from the Orient, as exemplified by these magnificent Asian courtyard doors, which harmonize beautifully with the reclaimed plank flooring that blankets much of the home’s main level. Making this architectural synergy even more unique, the flooring – installed with antique nails – was done by Sanford Headings, an Amish craftsman.
Brought from New Orleans, the inlaid “pedestal” dining table seats 10 and rests on a baluster salvaged from a 17th-century European building. A slub linen runner with a hint of gold stretches the full length of the table and is arrayed with traditional red poinsettias, crystal-encrusted pinecones and a matched pair of heavy-plated candlesticks. Suspended between the rustic wood beams overhead are stylized Restoration Hardware chandeliers, hand-crafted from French oak wine barrel staves and hoops, which draw attention to one of the most distinctive features of this home. The wine “cellar” is cleverly located on the main floor, adjacent to and accessible from the dining room. Two dramatic arches divide the dining room’s long, stone-faced wall; one encases the decorative entry door to this fully equipped, temperature-controlled storage area; the other is a muntin-style window offering guests a view of the owners’ extensive wine collection. Equally conducive to entertaining is the family dining area, which is open to the great room and stunning kitchen. Although modestly referred to by the owners as the “breakfast room,” this expansive space is more than adequate for a large Tuscan dining table from Restoration Hardware and a generously proportioned leather seating group arranged in front of the limestone fireplace. Acid-treated to achieve its aged, weathered look, the table can be extended from 7 to 10 feet in length and is surrounded by French oak chairs, upholstered in Belgian linen. Seasonal table ornaments include white poinsettias in a stone planter, glitter-frosted pinecone candles and two oversized hurricane candleholders. On the side wall, a rustic wood-framed mirror, also from Restoration Hardware, tops the antique console table, which displays mercury-glass ornaments set on mercury-glass candleholders and a majolica compote filled with a spray of greenery and faux silver foliage. Flanked by arched cabinetry, the floor-to-ceiling fireplace is Aux
Vases limestone from St. Genevieve. A rough-hewn beam serves as the mantel and provides the setting for fluted vases holding silvery sprays and pinecones, fresh soft greens and a faux boxwood garland interspersed with tiny lights. Powder rooms are an unlikely topic of social conversation but, in this case, guests probably can’t resist. The highlight of the powder room is a reproduction European fountain that has been retrofitted as a washbasin, and the privacy alcove features an ornate wrought-iron and marble console table topped by a French trumeau mirror. A faux grapevine with gold berries adds a holiday touch to the fountain. Understated yet elegant, the holiday décor of this gracious residence is beautifully integrated with its Old World styling, embellishing the architectural elements and furnishings without detracting from their inherent dramatic effect. Water, water everywhere Big or small, water features are popping up in landscapes all around the St. Louis area. By Lucyann Boston Photography by Kim Dillon
you are looking for that holiday gift for someone who has everything, you might think about picking up a pond. Whether it’s hardly bigger than a puddle or large enough to swim in, people who have added ponds or waterfalls to their landscapes are passionate about the way a simple little (or big) water feature has changed their lives. They use words like “tranquility” and “peace” and “world away” to
Living Wall and Waterfall
As a principal in family owned Bauer Falls LLC, Caleb Bauer spends his days creating fabulous water features in other people’s gardens. But the project that he calls his “ultimate playground” is the waterfall in his own backyard in west St. Louis County. Working in a fairly confined space, Caleb had created a lovely waterfall, but “it looked like it was coming out of a fence,” he explains, describing the topography between his and his neighbor’s yard. Two years ago to remedy the problem, Caleb experimented with what he calls “a living wall” between 5- and 7-feet tall varying with the slope of the land. Constructed using heavy wire cattle panels (a type of fencing used in feed lots) and wood beams, he filled the structure

describe coming home and simply sitting beside some bubbling water. For the adventuresome there are pond kits and pond stores that sell kits, pumps and can offer advice to do-it-yourselfers. For those who are less daring, pond and water feature contractors can provide the ideas and do the digging. No matter how small the space, adding a water feature to a landscape can have a major impact.
with soil until it was solid enough to walk on. He topped that structure with landscape fabric, cutting slits in the fabric to insert plants. He was inspired, he laughs, by listening to the Cardinals broadcasts during the 2011 World Series, adding a “Go Cards” sign to the construction site. Now in its second year, the living wall gets more spectacular with time as plants grow and fill in. "My neighbors love it so much they’ve told me I have their permission to extend the wall into their yards,” he adds, noting that “living walls” are an ideal way to create lush landscapes in small spaces. “You can do so much with a little area and it really makes you feel fantastic.”

Two Green Thumbs, One Spectacular Water Feature Dyann Dierkes and Mickey Reynolds are big fans of water features; each had a small one at previous homes. When they became engaged and moved into their current home in Fenton, it naturally followed that they would work together on a joint project. “We thought it would be fun to build one together,” says Mickey. They looked at the area and mapped out their ideas but also decided to get some professional help by way of Joe Summers and Chalily Ponds and Gardens in Manchester. “Joe came out and gave us some good hints. We bought a pond kit from him, and it just all progressed from there,” explains Dyann. The couple worked on the project for two months, adding plants, statuary and even an outdoor living room with speakers for the right mood music. That was just one year ago and already the project looks as if it had been in place for years. Agreeing that they both have green thumbs, they have nurtured both the plants and the fish now in their pond with attention, water and food. The sound of the waterfall, the beauty of the aquatic plants and the colors of the fish add to the lushness and tranquility of the setting. Their joint project is something both love 12 months a year. Even in winter they operate the pump, keep water flowing, and take pleasure in the sound and sight of their garden. “It’s absolutely beautiful with snow on it,” says Dyann.

Pond Paradise
Chuck Brust’s project began with a deck, a flat yard and a wish for a water feature “that sounded like a mountain stream.” He ended up with a room-sized, 18-by-15-foot pond fed by a 15-foot stream that’s transformed his backyard into a water wonderland. Caleb Bauer of Bauer Falls, who constructed the piece of paradise for plants, fish and humans alike, tucked the edge of the pond under the deck so that, as Caleb explains, “looking down from the deck all you see is the pond.” Excavating such a large space meant there was plenty of dirt available and Caleb used it combined with rock and boulders to create the elevated stream and 3-foot waterfall that flows into the pond. A stepping stone path leads to a stone

bridge spanning the stream and provides a handsome contrast to the grasses, mums, coreopsis and annuals that line the way and soften the hard edges of the stone. In addition Caleb constructed stone steps that allow Chuck, a hands-on Master Gardener, to walk directly into the pond and tend to the water lilies and other aquatic plants that flourish in its 3.5-foot depth. “They allow me to treat the pond like any other garden bed,” Chuck says. “I go in weekly to trim and deadhead just like I do in my terrestrial beds.” The project also included a ground-level patio, where Chuck is able to utilize a series of containers to grow and display a wide variety of tropical plants.

Whether traditional or exotic, selecting a theme adds continuity to holiday decor By Katie O’Connor Photograpy by Anne Matheis
‘Tis the season
for creating holiday magic by adding sparkle and spice all through the house. But decking the halls often relies on holiday décor collections built over many years, and making sense of all the mismatched pieces and disparate elements can sometimes make this annual ritual a bit of an overwhelming task. But it need not be, says Clarice Wheeler, owner of Imogene’s in Wildwood, who creatively outfits her home and shop in holiday finery from top to bottom every December. With a bit of know-how, she notes, holiday decorating can be an enjoyable creative moment, one that ultimately creates a warm environment for celebrating this special time of year. Clarice begins by choosing a theme, which helps to guide the process by suggesting colors and limiting which items in a collection to use. Last year, for example, she chose Africa as her theme, inspired by her love of and travels to the continent. Though unusual for the holidays, the concept allowed for the use of rich browns and warm tans that complement the season’s traditional reds, dark greens and glittery metallics, as well as the creative incorporation of sentimental items from both her holiday collection and her everyday life. Feathers and cheetah-print ribbon were tucked among the evergreen boughs of the foyer’s banister garland and the creamy white flowers in the dining room centerpiece, for example, while zebra ornaments hung alongside those with history on the great room’s Christmas tree.
“Your theme can include anything in your home that you truly love or that has great memories,” Clarice explains, noting that one of this year’s more than a dozen inspirational trees at Imogene’s will sport a Harley-Davidson theme. “Everybody has a lot of Christmas stuff they’ve collected over the years; as you sort through your holiday items, consider one theme and then pull out the good stuff [that relates] and use that.” Clarice suggests using one theme throughout the house, but even if you’re opting for multiple motifs, the key to keeping things cohesive is color. “If you choose a red and green Santa theme, use those same colors in all rooms,” she says. “Don’t use reds and greens in your great room and aqua and fuchsia in your foyer. [You want] your look to flow from room to room.” Several traditional elements make varying the theme even easier. “Green is a natural color, like grass and trees, so it goes with almost everything,” Clarice says. “Just be careful what you plop on top of it.” To that end, choose elements for trees and garlands with an eye toward texture. Nestling shiny metallic ornaments among rough-hewn pinecones, soft feathers and glittery spheres adds interest to arrangements. And don’t forget the lights, which add cheerful depth and a warm glow to even the most creative themes. “Lights are super important,” Clarice notes. “They make such a difference.” See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

Italy’s “Heel” Steps Up During the Holidays

Italy is probably the longest peninsula in the world and certain the only one shaped like a boot. The heel of the boot forms another much smaller and thinner peninsula of its own called the Salento. It is the southernmost part of Puglia, bordered by the Ionian Sea to the east and the Adriatic Sea to the west. While not as well-known to tourists as many other Italian regions, natives travel here for the most pristine, sandy beaches in Italy and for the dramatic landscapes found along the shore with amazing white limestone rock formations rising out of both seas and the remains of ancient coastal towers that were built in the 15th and 16th centuries as watchtowers against attack from the water. The Salento peninsula enjoys a Mediterranean climate, so in November and December the temperatures can be as warm as the mid-70s, a far cry from St. Louis, but nearly perfect for a holiday vacation. This less-traveled region also

lays claim to lush farmlands that yield some of the finest olive trees and grapesvines in the country. If you’re traveling along the olive tree-lined back roads of the Brindisi, in the heart of peninsula, you’ll likely drive past a 15th century castle called Serranova. You might even see the two Vallone sisters, Vittoria and Maria Teresa, whose family has owned the winery and vineyards since 1934, or famed consulting winemaker Graziana Grassini, out among their more than 600 hectares of farmland that belong to the family. During the holidays, the castle and its treasure trove of antiques are not adorned with the grander decorations found on and in American homes. It is much more likely that a wreath of olive branches or grape vines from the property, festooned with berries and even starfish or shells from the nearby beaches, will be hanging over the castle’s many fireplace mantels. Castle Serranova, like many large homes of the time period in predominantly Catholic Italy, has a beautifully restored private chapel where the Vallone family has celebrated many a Christmas Eve Mass followed by a holiday supper in the dining room. Like the holiday decorations, much of the holiday dinner’s bounty comes from the farm or the sea. Baccala alla Salentina is not the average dried cod served by most Italians on Christmas Eve, but a special recipe where the dried and salted cod is sprinkled with breadcrumb s, pecorino cheese and fresh tomato, then baked in the oven with potatoes to a golden crispiness. Another Salento delicacy is what they call milk lamb (baby lamb raised only on mother’s milk) that is very tender. The leg of this young lamb is marinated for 12 hours in dry white wine, together with herbs like laurel and myrtle (an ancient spice found in abundance in Mediterranean areas like the Salento peninsula – rosemary can be substituted if there is no myrtle available). It is then wrapped in caul fat, another ancient ingredient that is actually a thin membrane of fat from pigs or cows, which melts into the pink meat during 40 minutes of baking. Very thinly sliced strips of easier-to-find lardo will also work. Slices of this tender lamb are usually served with medium-sized potatoes cooked in ashes. Now practiced in some of the world’s top restaurant kitchens as a cutting-edge way of cooking whole, unpeeled potatoes, cooks on the Salento have been using for centuries the ashes from olive tree branches that are burned in the outdoor barbecue pits found in the yards of most homes in this region. A traditional pasta dish of region features the famous orcchiette ear-shaped pasta that was first made on the Salento. Usually combined with olive oil and garlic-sauteed broccoli rabe, or fresh tomatoes and ricotta cheese, these little cups of pasta are amazing with a simple broccoli and anchovy sauce, where small pieces of anchovy are sautéed in garlic-laced olive oil. The anchovies melt into the oil, leaving a delicate fish and salt flavor. Zeppoles, the addictive balls of fried dough that are ubiquitous at Italian street fairs in the U.S., also had its start in this region. Here, it is either fried or baked, and then the taster can personalize the sweet by filling it with cream or chocolate or both as a dessert treat. Wines from this region, like those the Vallone sisters are producing, are made with native Italian grapes like negromaro or montepulciano. Their Graticciaia is a spicy red wine made only from negromaro with dried fruit, tobacco and vanilla flavors that make it a perfect match for the baked baby lamb. As a prelude to the holidays, on November 11, the people on the Salento celebrate the end of the harvest with a feast called Vinello. The peninsula comes together to taste the fruits of their labors from this harvest’s wine – and to open bottles from the previous year. Like a real Salentino, the best way to work off all the feasting is to break into a Pizzica – the vigorous folk dancing of the region, similar to the Tarantella. When
two Frontenac homeowners added serious square footage to their estate, a crowded mudroom found new purpose as a handsome, centralized anteroom – both bar and Butler’s pantry – inspired by the rich feel of the old Westchester gentlemen’s clubs. Decorator Garison Salinas of Garrison, Ltd. dubs the room denim-and-diamonds dapper. “The homeowners don’t entertain black tie or even coat and tie all the time, so they were interested in a bar that was elegant but also warm,” he says of a space suitable for lavish soirees and family get-togethers alike. Whatever the occasion, entertaining is less taxing when the essentials are handy. “The original mudroom didn’t connect to the kitchen at all,” designer Keith Gegg of Gegg Design & Cabinetry clarifies. “So we created an opening to it, which makes the territory useful as both a bar and pantry.” Everything is readily accessible: Sub Zero icemaker, refrigerated drawers and a two-temperature zone wine cooler. “I simply set out glasses, lemons and limes and alcohol, and everybody helps themselves,” says the homeowner. If she serves in the dining room after cocktails, the bar becomes “the perfect pass-through area for setting food.” The room is stunning, true, but there’s nothing artificial or impracticable about it. The crown molding, for example, is for function as much as aesthetics. “Storage,” says Gegg, “goes all the way up the ten-foot ceilings with doors that flip.” Opening small spaces with height allows for the incorporation of dramatic details like the large-scale Schaub polished nickel pulls Salinas touts as “the David Yurman of hardware.” Here’s another secret: those attractive, skinny panels on either side of
the hand-hammered copper sink accommodate five-inch-wide narrow doors harboring wine bottles. Guests won’t detect any appliances other than the wine cooler though because everything is completely integrated. “We designed around the concept of the cabinetry,” says Salinas of Gegg’s custom work. Dark-stained walnut exteriors complement lighter lyptus interiors and a unique wooden backsplash. “Mixing painted wood with lighter stained wood,” explains Salinas, “is a simple way to give newer houses the feel of history. Anybody could have thrown in a stone backsplash, but carved wood panels – they’re so reminiscent of the beautiful Westchester tutors.” Glass shelves and interior lights are to thank for the glowing ambiance. Equally high-impact are textured German antique glass cabinets and a stunning etched-glass door leading to the homeowner’s office. “That door was a big deal,” she says bluntly. “We wanted lots of light entering the space, which is completely interior, but we also wanted the glass to be smoked so that nobody would notice if my office desk is cluttered.” Salinas himself designed the walnut door, which was custom made by Chesterfield-based The Scobis Company. The result, the Audrey Hepburn of home interiors, is as relaxed, timeless, and chic as the starlet’s iconic loafers. The St. Louis bred homeowners “love contemporary, but hate cold and austere,” Salinas says. “They’re all about warmth; in that way this very approachable space reflects their wonderful, welcoming personalities.” See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

Opened in April 2009, the Moonrise Hotel brings a unique hotel experience to the Delmar Loop neighborhood. The hotel is the creation of developer Joe Edwards as part of his vision to bring vibrancy to The Loop. “I brought the idea of a hotel to several hi rise owners in the Loop, but no one was interested in converting to a hotel,” Edwards says. “I thought it was important for the area to have a one-of-a-kind boutique hotel. Owner-operated businesses are what makes the Loop strong.” Blending modern design with quirky sophistication, the hotel features an iridescent lobby wall and open staircase with ever changing colors, lively artwork and display cases of collectibles that are lunar themed with items such as autographs of every person that has walked on the moon, ornaments, toys, etc. Driving down Delmar, you can spot it by looking up to the sky. Edwards created the one of the largest manmande moons in the world on the rooftop. The moon rotates throughout the day taking the scene from day to night. The rooftop bar is one of the hotel’s highlights with spectacular views of the neighborhood. In April 2013, the rooftop underwent a renovation to add on to the space. In addition to providing more room for guests to enjoy the outdoor views, the roof is the first restaurant roof in the U.S. to be made entirely of solar panels and was constructed by Microgrid Solar. The Moonrise Hotel is also one of the region’s leading green hotels. Stop in for a weekend stay, a drink at the rooftop bar or consider housing out-of-town guests at the Moonrise this holiday season.

Now an exhibition spread over two floors, the Atomium tells the history of this pavillion and how it became the symbol of the city of Brussels and of Belgium.
