It doesn't matter how excellent the food and wine may be. If I'm sitting in a lousy chair at dinner I start to get restless as soon as the meal is over. And why? My bottom hurts. I pace myself through dinner and I have room for dessert but I hear myself saying, "I'll try some pecan pie later if that's alright." Darn it...if only I was sitting in a comfy chair! My favorite restaurants have comfy chairs. My favorite hotels have comfy beds (page 68). With comfort taking the forefront, it only makes sense then to include comfy seating options in our dining rooms and kitchens at home. By combining different chair styles or adding a bench to our dining ensemble, we are incorporating a super hot trend right now (page 16). Not only does this style mixing add interest to the dining area, but it quickly updates your space in time for the holidays. And who doesn't love to decorate for the holidays? “It’s so easy to do too much, but I have to be selective with the glitter. Just a highlight,” explains Susan Medart, owner of Knollwood Lane. And just like that, with a gentle stroke of glue and sprinkle of fine indigo glitter, a delicate shimmer is added to the manger scene on one of her vintage-inspired Christmas cards. In an era of mass-produced holiday cards, where personalization means a preprinted family photo and a hasty signature, Knollwood Lane’s handmade Christmas cards are a breath of fresh air. Medart finds images on old wrapping paper, antique greeting cards and flea-market treasures. She transfers the pictures to high-quality notepaper, and then brightens them with a smidge of sparkle. Each glitter-adorned card is

sold individually. “We have people who collect them and buy them by the dozens. Our customers just love that they’re unique – you can’t find them in a big box store,” says Angie Mathey, owner of The White Rabbit boutique, where the cards are sold exclusively. Medart works with two other women, designer Julie Frizzell and photographer Crystal Lindsey, to create and sell the one-of-a-kind décor, accessories and children’s apparel for which Knollwood Lane is known. The items are always vintage-inspired and handmade, but vary according to the treasures that the women discover. Pieces of wood become banners, monogrammed table chargers and wedding guest books. tags are reborn as bracelets. “We’ll see something and think, that’s so cool. We create around the special things that we find,” Frizzell explains. The women work closely together, bonding over their love of country music and peanut M&Ms. They’re also united by their deep Christian faith. “We believe that God put us together. It’s what leads us, and why we make sure our [creations] are good,” Medart says. In fact, Medart credits faith for the next chapter in Knollwood Lane’s story. “Every time we pray about our business, we get a wholesale order. And that’s what has led our business to [selling] wholesale,” she says. Knollwood Lane has shipped as far away as Brazil and Australia. SLHL: Do you provide the lights for homeowners or can they use their own? Mark: We do provide the lights, but if the customer would like to use their own then we will work with them on a time-and-material basis. SLHL: When is the best time to call to set up an appointment for holiday lighting? Mark: When thinking about holiday lighting, it best to call late September to mid-October to ensure your lights are up in time to enjoy them throughout the holiday season. SLHL: What is the difference between the lights you use and lights you buy at the store? Do you offer LED lighting? Mark: The lights we use are a commercial grade and can be easily customized for your home. We offer both LED and incandescent lighting strands and bulbs. There is a misconception with regards to the color for the white LED lights. They now come in warm white and white. The colored LED bulbs are much more brilliant than the incandescent lights. I like to use only LED lights on the roofline to cut back on callbacks to have to change a bulb out during the season. Trees can be done by spiral wraps or trunk and limb wraps. If we are doing trunk and limb wraps, we typically use incandescent lights to save the customer on cost of product and labor to take down. Gamlin Whiskey House combines the best of two worlds: It’s a bar offering about 300 whiskeys and a Southern-inspired steakhouse. “We always had a dream of opening a whiskey restaurant, and we just went for it,” says Lucas Gamlin, who owns the restaurant in the Central West End with his brother Derek. They also own SubZero Vodka Bar in the Central West End, and Tahaá Twisted Tiki Bar in the Grove. “Whiskey is really my passion, and I think yours as well, Lucas?” Derek says. “Definitely,” Lucas answers. They visit the distillery to pick out barrels of Knob Creek, their most popular brand, and have it bottled for them. The oak barrels – six and counting, plus one from Old Forester – become part of the décor, set into the walls and on the dining-room floor.

Although the Whiskey House opened just a year ago, it’s already expanded into the space next door, allowing the Gamlins to build a second bar and creating a spot for private parties. Choosing from hundreds of whiskeys can be a challenge, so a whiskey sommelier is on staff. Gamlin’s serves 1½- and 2½-ounce pours and offers 20 whiskey flights, each comprised of three 1½-ounce pours. A lengthy cocktail list ranges from the classics to inventive signature drinks. The “Champiskey” selections – such as Whiskey in the Morning, a blend of Seagram’s Seven Crown, orange liqueur, orange juice, lemon and champagne – are perfect for brunch, and dessert drinks hit the sweet spot. Cooks also reach for whiskey when appropriate, brining chicken drummettes in bourbon and tossing them in a sweet bourbon sauce, for example, and accompanying seared salmon with bourbon-pineapple chutney. Santa will have a new name on his list
when he visits the home of Jassen Johnson and Sarah Kramer this year. Baby Windsor arrived in September and will be celebrating her first Christmas with her parents and two siblings, Hartman, age 3½, and Sloan, 2½, in their beautifully renovated residence in the Central West End. Jassen holds a degree in architecture and business from the University of Illinois and is the founder of Renaissance Development Associates, a real-estate development and consulting firm that specializes in complex mixed-used redevelopment projects. With a modest smile, he translates, saying, “That means I’m very pro-St. Louis and like to build cool stuff in the city.” Similarly civic-minded, Sarah is currently on maternity leave, but plans to resume her responsibilities as director of community relations for Peabody Energy shortly. Married for five years, this dynamic couple has created a household full of love, joy, fun and enthusiasm for the arts. Needing more space for a growing family, the couple purchased their 6,650-square-foot, Italianate three-story in 2012. At the time, however, the building was in foreclosure and uninhabitable. To most, the task ahead would have been daunting, but the house met their basic parameters: a historic home with “great bones” inside the city limits. So, they leased their downtown loft and temporarily leased a small apartment. Assisted by family members from their respective hometowns in Illinois and Iowa, Jassen and Sarah managed to make the house livable in just two months, then moved in to complete the renovation. Built in 1898, the home includes seven bedrooms and a sleeping porch, six baths and a four-car carriage house with an upstairs apartment. Renewal efforts started with the kitchen and installation of a high-efficiency boiler system, six air handlers (two per floor) and air conditioning. The lower stories are radiator-heated, and a heat strip on the third floor supplements the warm air rising from below. “This system keeps our utility bills in check,” Jassen explains. The only structural modifications made to the original floorplan were on the main level, where the butler’s pantry was converted to a shotgun kitchen with open STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM

breakfast/family dining area and adjacent laundry room, and on the top floor, which was reconfigured into a spectacular master retreat. All of the lighting and windows, except those with leaded glass, were replaced, but most of the floors were in reasonable condition, having been refurbished with dark-stained maple during an earlier renovation. Design of the interior also required some serious planning. While owners of historic homes typically fill their rooms with valuable antiques, this is a family with small children. In Jassen’s words, though, “It’s not impossible to have nice things when you have kids. You just have to be smart about what you’re doing.” Another consideration was that Jassen favors traditional styling,

and Sarah’s tastes tend to be more modern. By juxtaposing elements of both styles in each space, adding an occasional Asian accent and focusing on durable, easy-to-clean materials, they’ve achieved a look that respects the home’s classic character, yet adapts to the family’s active, contemporary lifestyle. Amazingly, in a mere two years, the once-derelict residence has been transformed into one of the finest in the neighborhood. Decorated for the holidays, it’s greeting-card perfect – inside and out. Designed by Jassen, the elaborate seasonal décor is further evidence of his artistry and takes nearly a week to install. Garlands trimmed with white lights and red ribbon festoon the arched-entry porch

and balconies. Fresh miniature Christmas trees fill the planters, and the burled-oak entry door issues a welcome to Santa. A row of grapevine-and-berry topiaries and a large grapevine wreath, wrapped with burlap, establish a stylish theme that is carried through to the interior. Open to the third floor, the foyer’s majestic staircase is draped with burlap-wound garland. A wreath of poinsettias adds color to the glass-topped center table, which has an ornate gilt-painted base, and poinsettia topiaries lend a contemporary touch. Like most of the furnishings in the home, those in the library came from the owners’ previous loft and are proportionally well-suited to the
large, high-ceilinged rooms. The library floor had not been replaced, and Jassen chose to preserve the distinctive pattern of diagonals and insets, refinishing the wood and applying an ebony stain. Boldly contemporary, the walls and ceiling are painted metallic silver, softly reflecting light from the antique chandelier, salvaged from an old downtown clothing store. The library’s nostalgic Christmas tree showcases treasured family ornaments and a pintuck silk garland made from the 90-foot runner that had adorned the head table at the couple’s wedding reception. table with a vintage “reclaimed” look and natural finish, an Asian sideboard from Suttonwood Antiques, streamlined dining chairs in a linen/velvet damask pattern, one of several abstracts painted by Jassen and contemporary suspended Edison-bulb lights from CENTRO. Holiday trimmings in this room emphasize a color scheme of eggplant, white and silver. Filled with photographic records of the children, the solarium is the hub of family activity and has abundant windows, cheerful yellow walls, a baby grand piano and the one original fireplace still in operation. Christmas stockings are hung from the mantel, and Jassen opted for a holiday palette of citrus colors, incorporating fresh limes and lemons and yellow-stained burlap into the garland. Off the kitchen, most family meals are enjoyed in the breakfast room, where a comfortable banquette provides seating for the oversized 8-by-9-foot black-granite island. At Christmastime, a miniature train
chugs around the island, entertaining the youngsters, while an audio book of the Christmas story plays again and again. A pass-through permits service from the kitchen to the spacious family room (and allows mom to keep an eye on the children). Rich gray walls give the room a cozy feel, and the “reading-nook” alcove provides the ideal location for another tree, positioned above the reach of tiny fingers and decorated with kid-friendly ornaments and Christmas cards. Virtually indestructible, the room’s generous sofa is covered in textured leather, and a metal steamer trunk serves as a coffee table. It’s unlikely that baby Windsor will understand the excitement as her brother and sister tear into their gifts on Christmas morning. But there’s no doubt that Sarah and Jassen will be giving thanks for their lovely home – and these three most precious gifts of all – on Christmas and every day of the year. Family is the focus when it comes to decorating this exquisite West County residence.
Still stuffed from the previous evening’s feast, a West County family spends the day following Thanksgiving decking their house in holiday décor. Cozy in their pajamas as a fire crackles in the background, it’s a family affair, says the wife, who heads the decorating duties. By the Monday following the autumn holiday, their traditional, French-country two story is transformed from everyday into a magical holiday wonderland. Organized with an eye for design, the wife takes snapshots of each year’s décor and saves them in a special scrapbook. When it is time to decorate again, she pulls out her handy resource and knows exactly where she wants to put things. “Once you do it once and take pictures, it helps to make things go quickly,” she explains. The photos also help her tweak her looks from year to year. Family is the focus of much of the décor. Ornaments made in school by the kids, stockings that have been hung over the chimney for decades and other special mementos mix with the traditional garland
and ribbon. For the family, it is fun opening the boxes of decorations each season and finding ornaments they had forgotten about. Each year brings back a flood of happy nostalgia. Striving for a comfortable balance between homey and subtle, the decorations reflect the warmth and love of this family. This year, they will spend their eighth Christmas in their home, which was built by St. Albans Construction and designed by Dick Busch Architects. Seeking a completely open concept, the homeowners opted to exclude a living room/great room instead, designing a large kitchen which opens to the family room. The natural gathering place for family and friends, the kitchen is used a lot, the wife laughs. A family full of cooks, you can bet you will find several members of the family gathered around the granite island prepping an appetizer or dessert for a holiday get-together. “We built our kitchen with a second island close to the family room so guests could still be a part of the space without getting in the way of the STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2014

Soft, fluffy “snow” brings texture to the scenic village. A set of windows in the breakfast room gives the family a scenic view of their beautiful backyard landscape and the Missouri River. The view is just too good to miss out on even in the winter months, so the
family will gather up the heavy blankets, grab a mug of hot cocoa and snuggle close to the outdoor stone fireplace. The crisp smell of burning wood, the sounds of the crackling of the fire and the serene view would put any visitor in the holiday spirit. Back inside, the family room offers access to the outdoor patio and also includes a floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace. Stockings are hung on the mantel, which is decked in swags of garland and topped with an exquisite wreath adorned in festive red, white and black adornments. The wife’s favorite part of the holidays? “I love our real tree,” she says. “I couldn’t imagine not having one.” SummerWinds Nursery delivers the tree the day after Thanksgiving each year. Positioned on an angle, the rectangular wood table seats eight. “We upholstered the chairs since we weren’t putting down an area rug,” the wife explains. Neutral side chairs mixed with red-and-gold patterned head chairs provide softness and texture against the wood floor and table. Atop the table, a long mirror reflects the shimmer and sparkle of the season. Silver-and-gold reindeer, berries and pinecones and candles ramp up the holiday décor. This charming garden began as a personal, then family, project that the parents and also their children now wish to share with a wider audience. You can read more about the family’s gardening adventures, accompanied by beautiful photography, at www.spygarden.com. “Let me show you our garden,” the wavy-haired 3-year-old offered just seconds after I stepped out of my car. She grabbed my hand and purposefully marched me down the slightly sloping side yard of her
Wildwood home. We headed toward a large, colorful enclosure filled with plants. Around it, light but sturdy wire fencing kept the garden inside safe from deer living in the nearby woods. Her 8-year-old brother plus Mom and Dad trailed behind us. Once inside, we settled on comfortable, handmade wooden chairs, a refreshing pitcher of ice water not far away, and the tale of how the undulating vista before us took shape. It began in 2010, well before the 3-year-old came into the world, when multi-talented Mom, an English and art history major, who also holds a nursing degree, looked at her yard and saw an art project. From the very beginning, the kids have been instrumental in planning and caring for the garden. The 8-year-old came up with the unusual name: “Spy Garden,” at the garden’s inception. “We planted tall plants like corn and sunflowers around the outside of the garden to frame it,” Mom explains. “He said we should call it ‘Spy Garden’ because we could be inside the garden and ‘spy’ on the outside world.”

Each year the garden grows with the addition of different beds and shapes and the positioning of plants for their beauty as well as their use. A teepee-shaped trellis provides a form for squash vines, including an heirloom variety with orange, potato-like flesh known as an “upper ground sweet potato.” Thomas Jefferson is known to have sent seeds to a friend calling it a “potatoe-pumpkin.” Bright-red ‘Rouge Vif D’Etampes’ pumpkins dangle from a lattice arbor that also frames a garden vista centered with gray-green eucalyptus and frothy asparagus foliage. The decorative and highly edible squash were the most popular pumpkins in the Central Market in Paris in the 1880s and were used as the model for Cinderella’s coach. Mom crocheted string supports to help carry the pumpkins’ weight and keep them attached to the stem and the arbor. “I love heirloom varieties. The more unusual and the more weird-looking the better,” she says. “I’m growing a flower in my garden called love-in-a-mist from seed that dates back to a monastery garden in the 1300s. I look through seed catalogs for plants that are different, rare or have an interesting history. I love to try new things. “I have great luck with French varieties but not everything grows the same way each year,” she points out, noting the differences in temperatures, rainfall and other factors. “Some

years the eggplant is good; other years it’s the squash that’s great.” A favorite catalog for interesting varieties and heirlooms is from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds in Mansfield, MO. Because they encourage the children to eat the vegetables right from the garden, Mom and Dad garden without pesticides, relying on strong scented plants such as marigolds, mint and a number of herbs to deter pests. The kids, Dad notes happily, are not picky and will eat all the vegetables they watch grow and ripen. Everyone has their favorite plants. The 3-year-old favors cucumbers. For the 8-year-old it’s pumpkins, particularly an "Atlantic Giant" that Dad estimates could weigh 80-90 pounds. Dad loves the berry bushes. Mom is fascinated with amaranth, a little known but all-around good plant (resembling a giant celosia), which can be grown as a grain but also has edible leaves and stems and is closely related to beets, Swiss chard and spinach. Dad initially wasn’t sure about the continuing garden expansion and the swirls of artistic expression, “I just wanted to cut the grass,” he quips. He is now 100 percent behind all the efforts. “I love it,” he adds. “It’s really good for the kids.” The parents estimate that the entire family spends at least an hour every evening working in the garden. “Garden walks are mandatory,” the parents agree and the kids affirm. The entire family relishes the chance to survey the results of their hard work and watch nutritious and beautiful food taking shape right before their eyes. “Often we just walk around and look at the plants,” Mom says. “You can learn a lot just by looking.” See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

For happening holiday wines, look to the South (Africa)

Every November, it’s the same question. What to serve with the traditional Thanksgiving feast? When you have such dispirit flavors as lemon-dilled Brussels sprouts, green peas a la Francaise and apricot-glazed sweet potatoes, not to mention a turkey that could be roasted, braised, baked or grilled, your wine choices can be just as varied. American-produced Zinfandels from California and Pinot Noirs from all over the West Coast are the usual red choices. And, most holiday tables look towards the stalwart Chardonnay grape (with oak, or not) to handle the white wine duties. But one country has a surprising number of wines that are the perfect pairing for most of the dishes that grace the holiday table. South Africa, particularly in the south and eastern parts of the country, have been producing wine for centuries all the way back to the mid 1600s when the Dutch first colonized the country. In the 1950s and 60s,

regions such as Stellenbosch (just outside Cape Town), Franschook and Paarl became the areas best known for the finest grape cultivation and wine production. The grapes that flourished and are today considered the country’s signature white and red varietals are Chenin Blanc (famous from France’s Loire Valley) and a unique viticultural cross called Pinotage created in Stellenbosch in the 1920s as a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault known, at that time, as Hermitage, which accounts for the grape’s name. It is grown only in South Africa and has become the backbone of the red-wine industry there, coming to market as a varietal, in blends and even as a sparkling wine. Both the above wines work with nearly every food on our Thanksgiving tables. South African Chenin Blancs, such as those made by the Malan

Lemon-Dilled Brussels sprouts (makes 4-6 servings) Ingredients 1-1/2 pounds fresh Brussels sprouts • 1/3 cup butter • 2 tablespoons lemon juice • 1 teaspoon dill weed 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1/8 teaspoon pepper • 2 tablespoons finely chopped walnuts Directions: In a large saucepan, bring 1 in. of water and Brussels sprouts to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 8-10 minutes or until tender. Meanwhile, in another large saucepan, melt butter. Stir in the lemon juice, dill, salt and pepper; cook and stir for 1 minute. Drain sprouts; add to butter mixture and toss to coat. Sprinkle with walnuts.
family (wine pioneers in the Stellenbosch region whose French Huguenot ancestors go back nearly as far as the Dutch), have tropical fruit-forward aromas and flavors, as well as acacia flower, giving this dry wine a hint of sweetness. The aforementioned peas, any seafood dishes and almost any preparation of sweet potatoes will find a ready partner in Simonsig Chenin Blanc. Simonsig is the name of the Malan family’s wines, as the vineyards and winery sit near the foothills of the Simonsberg Mountains. Like its parent Pinot Noir, Pinotage has light fruit characteristics and enough tannic structure, whether it spends time in oak or not, to complement the unique taste of turkey meat, especially if the turkey is brined in, or rubbed with, herbs and spices. The best Pinotages, like Simonsig’s, have a wonderful earthiness and smokiness that comes from the terroir of the region. This characteristic opens up the wine to any dish
that is rich or aromatic, which is certainly the case with much of what is found on the table at Thanksgiving. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the beginning of democratic rule in South Africa and the end of world-wide trade sanctions that made it impossible for South African wines to be sold in the United States and many other countries. Great strides in the wines (not only Chenin Blanc and Pinotage, but also world-class Sauvignon Blancs, Cabernet Sauvignons and Syrahs) and their distribution worldwide, many at value prices between $10 and $20, certainly prompt me to give thanks when I’m sipping these food-friendly gems, during the holidays and all year round. Escape to
Tropical Paradise

Ah, winter is soon upon us. The dramatic leaves of fall are turning a crispy brown and drifting to the ground. What a perfect time to slide your feet into some slippers, grab a mug of hot chocolate and start planning a wintertime escape! Sure we love the seasons changing, but do you ever close your eyes and dream of being whisked away to a tropical paradise? I decided to make that dream come true with a weekend trip to Florida’s sunny Palm Beach and The Breakers Palm Beach. If you’ve ever wanted to live like a queen (or a king), then I’m fairly certain I’ve found the exact spot. In fact, Princess Diana has even visited The Breakers Palm Beach, and it feels like a castle by the sea. Packed full of history and gorgeous architecture, this legendary resort sits right on the beach of the Atlantic Ocean and offers basically anything and everything you’d want out of a vacation experience and then some. With only four short days to explore, I made the most of my time at

The Breakers. Since construction of The Breakers in 1896 by railroad tycoon Henry Flagler, the building itself has suffered two major fires. It has maintained its historical elegance with barrel vaulted, hand-painted ceilings and carefully hand-restored antique tapestries, which are displayed throughout the main hall. I had the opportunity to set foot in the many ballrooms, from the Mediterranean Ballroom with its frescoed ceilings and Venetian-style chandeliers to the Circle Ballroom with its soaring, 30-foot domed ceiling and oval murals. My favorite part of mornings at The Breakers was breakfast at the Beach Club. After one such delightful breakfast, our waitress, Deirdre, pointed us in the direction of the resort’s bike rentals. My travel companion and I took off gleefully dinging our bike’s bells, alerting any bird, bystander or golf cart, “Watch out, here we come!” The trail

meandered along the island’s western shoreline through mansion country and also cruised past the Whitehall, Henry Flagler's Gilded Age estate, now-turned museum. Though my favorite part was dorkily ringing my bike bell, it was a lovely way to take in the island, work up a sweat and feel the ocean breeze through my hair. Another great way to check out all Palm Beach had to offer was a driving tour around town. After freshening up at The Breakers, I headed to the courtyard where Deborah Hutchison, a family friend and founder of Gutsy Gals Inspire Me, was waiting to take me on a tour of the mega-mansions of Palm Beach Island. Priced up to $74 million, some have a more modern look but many were built in the 1920s in the Mediterranean-revival style — a Palm Beach hallmark mix of stucco walls, Spanish red-tile roofs, Italianate towers, Moorish-Gothic carvings and the uniquely Floridian use of coquina, a grayish porous limestone made of coral rock with fossil-like imprints of shells. Two words: huge and beautiful. If relaxing on a beautiful beach, enjoying four gorgeous pools, playing golf and gazing at the stars in a hot tub isn’t enough excitement, consider taking a flying trapeze class at the Aerial Trapeze Academy in Royal Palms. Yes, I tried the flying trapeze. I stepped into a harness, climbed the tall ladder and found myself standing at the edge of a very tall platform holding onto a trapeze bar about to jump off. Before I could chicken out, I heard the word “Hep,” which means it was my turn to jump and soar through the air, let go of the bar and be caught by another trapeze artist. No worries, not only was there a net below, but I was also harnessed in so it’s safe for people of all ages, shapes and sizes! Feeling triumphant, I decide to celebrate the flying-trapeze success with
an evening at the HMF, The Breakers’ hip and glamorous establishment for classic cocktails and delectable tapas. Set in the historical Florentine Room, I dined and sipped while tapping my toes to the music and taking in the vibe of yesteryear. Before heading to the airport my last day, I did some last-minute shopping. There are more than 10 shops at The Breakers including Lily Pulitzer and Ralph Lauren. While one could easily go a whole trip and never leave The Breakers, it was finally time to depart. On our way out of town, my traveling companion and I decided to stop in and check out some of the upscale shopping on Worth Avenue, including Gucci, Giorgio Armani, Louis Vuitton and Cartier. We grabbed one last bite to eat at Cafe Via Flora. We sat back in our chairs and reflected on some of our favorite moments: the craft cocktails and mouthwatering meals, lounging by the pools, flying through the air on the trapeze, laughing as we rang our bike bells along the mansion trail and enjoying the breathtaking grandiosity of The Breakers resort. Imaginations can run wild in a lower-level playroom designed with grandkids in mind.
In the lower level of the beautiful Town and Country residence of Jim and Karen Castellano, after you pass through Jim’s extensive sports memorabilia collection, you will wander into a sweet little “town” designed for their six grandchildren. Natural light floods the lower level of the home thanks to a wall of windows into the backyard, offering a bright, clean, organized playroom filled with everything an imaginative kid could want; a theater space with a dressing room that includes a chandelier, vanity and red velvet curtains; musical instruments and a microphone. “Their favorite thing to do is put on

plays,” says Karen. “They love getting dressed up in their costumes and singing and dancing!” Also featured is a library; a museum wall; a school room; a sweet pink kitchen from PB Kids and a sidewalk café. “We wanted to bring a bit of the outside indoors for the kids,” says Karen, and occasionally as the children sit enjoying “tea” at their sidewalk cafe, they may see a family of deer or wild turkeys wander by, creating an incredibly magical moment. “We designed the playroom to be next to my sewing room, so they could play while I sew,” says Karen, a talented seamstress. She found leaf fabric

for the cafe windows and added climbing vines to them to create Roman shades. Deep red velvet curtains from World Market were adorned with gold fringe and a tasseled gold cord for the dressing room area. The old-fashioned desk in the school area has a lovely family history. Karen, her father and her grandfather all attended St. Aloysius Gonzaga School on Magnolia Avenue in south St. Louis. Her father was able to procure the desks when the school was being demolished, and he refinished them and gave them to Karen for her girls when they were young. Now the fifth generation of the family sits in those seats learning their school lessons. Lee Halliburton, formerly of St. Louis, painted the space in two days incorporating a palette of soft pastels, leaning mostly towards pinks
and greens. A whimsical nod to the family’s love of Yorkie dogs is evident in the cafe, as well as some other sweet fuzzy friends: a bunny in the classroom, and a kitten in the kitchen window. Colorful family handprints accented with bric-a-brac adorn the wall over the school’s chalkboard. The museum is a large framed board covered with cloth that leans against the wall displaying the latest artistic renderings of the children. Ionic columns and some ivy offer a bit of gravitas. The dressing room, designed by New Space, offers plenty of storage for costumes, games and dolls. Karen and Jim's grandkids look forward to trips to grandma and grandpa's house where they can get lost in their imagination in their amazing playroom. See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources. I’ve never thought of that.’” Now, every holiday season, Davis and her team maintain a stacked schedule, creating mindfully designed homescapes for clients who enlist her expertise year after year. “A lot of our clients have some [decorations] that we will use, but we also use our professional judgment to tweak what they already have and add new things to give the design a fresh start,” says Davis. “We’re the experts, so we know how to get the right look for your budget.” Davis adds that decorating your mailbox for the holidays is an excellent way to take the spirit of the season to the street while staying within any price range. I think it can be as simple as just wrapping garland around with a beautiful pinecone and ribbon. We can decorate using your own items, but we do like to add new ribbons or garland because items get tired.” By adding fresh details such as berries and sticks, Davis allows her personal aesthetic to add natural aspects to her mailboxes. She claims that embracing the season, not pressuring yourself with perfection and decorating your home or mailbox with the things you love are the key elements of making any design successful.

Built for her grandfather Ralph Moberly in 1906, the vintage sleigh is the first and most stunning holiday decoration you see when entering Susan Medart’s home. Positioned proudly on a table in her front hall along with vintage family photos and trinkets, each year the sleigh drums up nostalgic memories of the past. Susan’s great-grandmother was a descendent of the Moon Car Company and had the sleigh made for her son to use in the snow. After her grandmother died, the sleigh came

Rustic with a Touch of Modern By The White Rabbit Rustic yet chic best describes the festive sleigh display by The White Rabbit. The designers went the rustic route to match the vintage feel of the sleigh, but they wanted to add a few modern elements. Santa, in a plaid suit, is the star as he leads his glittered reindeer through the winter night. A silvery beaded swag brings in a modern touch. The designers mixed the natural elements of the greenery, pinecones and berries with softer textures such as the gray knit throw. A reindeer, burlap runner underneath the sleigh adds more texture and further enhances the rustic feel.

Playing a horn and clothed in a rich, burgundy velvet, the cherub sets the tone of rustic elegance. Soft, flickering candles bring an additional layer of style and sophistication to the design. Preserved greens and feathers bring in the rustic element. By Marketplace at The Abbey The designers at Marketplace at The Abbey take you on an old-fashioned sleigh ride through Christmases past. Vintage-inspired signs and black-and-white ribbon spread cheery wishes of Merry Christmas. The designers wanted to play up the Old World style of the sleigh. A gray-and-brown plaid tree skirt with leather embellishments drapes the inside of the sleigh. Evergreens and red berries bring texture against the soft fabric of the tree skirt and linen, machine-washable pillows. A burlap snowman is tucked into the seat of the sleigh, while a cardinal perches in a tree overhead. And what sleigh would be complete without a string of Santa’s bells?

Old Hollywood elegance precedes the revival of formal entertaining in a 1930s Webster home. “I can never just cook a simple meal,” gushes homeowner and bona fide foodie Allison Gulbrandsen. Apparently her culinary exuberance slipped into interiors, too, because what began as a simple nursery project quickly enveloped Gulbrandsen’s entire residence, ending with the dramatic reimagining of an outdated Chinese-toile papered dining room. As for the new digs, they’re anything but commonplace -- A result designer Joni Spear of Joni Spear Interior Design accomplished with romantic, crisp Old Hollywood glitz that jives with Gulbrandsen’s affinity for that lost art of entertaining. Most homeowners, we know, are knocking down walls and opening up floor plans. Gulbrandsen doesn’t mind her home’s original layout. In fact, she likes how it follows the natural progression of a formal soiree,

beginning with a sit-down dinner, moving to the living room first and then outdoors. Last month, the soiree was a gourmet Giada cocktail party. Gulbrandsen served Hawaiian meatballs with homemade flatbreads, she says, before listing off a slew of mouthwatering ingredients that paired nicely with live jazz. For gatherings like this, the space matters. Gulbrandsen gave Spear carte blanche in the dining room and one guiding cue: elegance. Knowing the room’s bay window would dictate the furnishings Spear went ground up, choosing a custom Stark octagon rug for its angular practicality. Seating came next, and boy was that a challenge. “It’s an old house, and the rooms are small,” explains Spear. Fine for family-of-four weeknight dinners, but Gulbrandsen wanted the option of 12 place settings.

BEFORE Trompe-l'œil! Spear used an optical illusion: “You'd think larger furniture would close in a small space, but sometimes you can use bigger pieces and less of ‘em to fool the eye,” she says. Black and white stripes add movement to welcoming chenille chairs; an over-scale table -- discontinued, from Century -- is chic despite its natural hue. At this point, Spear was maxed out on furniture, but the room needed architecture. The mirrors came to her in a dream; when Spear awoke, she sprinted to the antique store and bought ten mirrors on the spot! The crowing achievement -- that glimmering Swarovski black glass chandelier -- was “a disaster,” Gulbrandsen sighs, laughing about how the original chandelier Spear found in Key West arrived in a million pieces… right before then-pregnant Gulbrandsen’s due date! (The antique dealer
eventually located another one in Manhattan.) The gold ceiling it hangs from, a specialty finish by Sherwin Williams, adds surprise and is edgy in a very unconventional way, Spear adds. Antiques offer the authentic, one-of-a-kind flavor Gulbrandsen covets. Spear gradually collected the rest of her dining collection: an incredible gold-and-white china set, gold silverware, and an interiorly-lit, old world china cabinet from a local antique store, milk-painted white then given a charcoal interior to match the room’s walls. Gulbrandsen didn’t want her home to look like everybody else’s. By teaming up with Spear, she got a unique look that’s just right for old-school entertaining. The Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis was constructed between 1907-1914. Designated a Basilica in 1997 during Pope John Paul II's historic trip to St. Louis, the Cathedral celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2014. The architecture is characterized by a combination of Romanesque and Byzantine influences. On the interior, over 83,000 square feet of mosaics
cover the walls. Designed by various artists, the design and installation took 80 years. More than 41 million glass pieces were used in 8,000 colors. Masses are offered every day of the week, and tours are available as either self-guided or docent-led.

Built between 1902 and 1906, the Morgan Library and Museum boasts one of the world’s greatest treasuries of artistic, literary, musical and historical works. Originally the private collection of famed financier Pierpont Morgan, the collection was given to the public in 1924. The complex of buildings spans over half a city block and first started as an intimate palazzo-like structure. Through the years, several additions were necessary to accommodate the expanding collection. In 1928, an annex was created

on the site of Morgan’s home. In 1988, the home of J.P. Morgan Jr. was added to the complex, and then in 1991 a garden court was built to unite all three buildings. A century after the building was originally completed, an expansion and renovation was done as the library again outgrew its space. Architect Renzo Piano integrated the three landmark buildings with three new pavilions constructed of steel-and-glass panels.

Tucked just outside a 1950s terraced house in St. John’s Wood is a garden pavilion containing a small office alongside garden storage space. Called Shoffice because it is a shed and an office, this sculptural object flows beautifully into the garden space. Formed by two steel ring beams, timber ribs and stressed plywood skin, the lightweight structure sits on top of a
minimal pad foundation. The Shoffice was a collaborative effort between architect Platform 5 Architects, structural engineer Morph Structures and contractor Millimetre. The office space is nestled into an extruded timber elliptical shell, which curls over itself and forms a small terrace in the lawn. The interior is oak lined and fitted with storage and a cantilevered desk.

Is it a classic or is it a craze?
For the November/December issue, we asked local design professionals about mismatched dining chairs. Are homeowners mixing and matching their chair sets, or is it smarter to stick to one style?

classic “Classic – mismatched chairs are indicative of the ‘not too matchy matchy’ style of decorating, which is definitely a classic look. I personally love the more laid-back feel of coordinating pieces with different woods, from different vendors, antique and new. A room has much more interest, personality and possibly drama with this approach.” Marcia Moore, Marcia Moore Design. “Many young families are discovering treasures in flea markets or resale shops and are bringing those great finds back to life. Upcycling mismatched chairs and adding unexpected color brings a lighthearted feel to dining. Even though some may prefer the formal dining room, I believe most people with busy lifestyles have moved toward creating a more easy, comfortable and casual dining experience. Craze “Just as the average homeowner is afraid of color, I feel he/she is also uncomfortable with mixed chairs at a dining table. Symmetry is much more comfortable to the eye for most people. Therefore I would say that mixing dining chairs is a craze.” Tom Manche, Thomas Manche Interiors. “This attempt at ‘shabby chic’ is a craze and falls short of classic as four to eight different style chairs are forced to reside in harmony. After you get over this craze you may be able to repurpose a chair for a desk, a guest room, entry or two chairs for an impromptu café table. A better effort to attain that edgy feel would be to use a contemporary table with classic host chairs and the side chairs in a compatible style.” Jane Ganz, Directions in Design.
“I think it will last as it gives people freedom to do whatever they want and enjoy doing it! This is a great style for ones on a budget.” Susan Block, The Designing Block. “CLASSIC! Mismatched chairs add a creative, sometimes unexpected touch to a dining or breakfast room table depending on the application. For example, in a more dressy dining room, replacing the host chairs with a different style, stain or paint color and fabric add interest.
