Greenification

Thanks to Bommarito for the Chevy Volt
Sustainable living…simply put, it’s the attempt to reduce an individual’s or society’s use of the earth’s natural resources. And if we concentrate on the five essential ingredients to a sustainable lifestyle and take a personal inventory of each, our children’s children will enjoy the same beautiful environment we inherited from our ancestors and probably not be burdened with the high energy costs we have today. Shelter, power, food, transportation and water are the five necessities dominating our daily lives, and in this issue we address aspects of each. While some of the sustainable essentials are easier to incorporate than others, seeking the guidance of the experts is key in constructing and maintaining a greener lifestyle. Matt Belcher’s life has been immersed in eco-building practices since he was knee-high to a grasshopper. As every aspect of the sustainable lifestyle continues to evolve, Matt graciously navigates us through the ins and outs of incorporating “green” products into a new or existing home (page 18). How cool would it be to have your own charging station in your garage like we did for this hybrid Chevy Volt?
page 71
While on the topic of charging up, Jeannie Brendel, Brendel Architects, and Chris Pagano, Pagano Development, “charge up” a turn-of-the century industrial space with the largest solar farm in Missouri (page 62) and fifth largest in the United States. The Lawrence Group makes the news with the first historic building to receive LEED Silver certification (page 71) in Missouri and HOK was awarded the world’s largest LEED Platinum project (page 70). Our St. Louis architects are charged up in more ways than one! Honored for their architectural ingenuity and integrity and overall aesthetic appeal, seven sensational St. Louis design projects have been singled out for SLHL’s second annual Architectural Finesse Awards (page 33). From phenomenal lower levels to an elegant mudroom, the magic of our winning architects and design teams are sure to inspire you. With all the talent we have here in St. Louis, is there any reason to reach outside our area? I don’t think so. Stay tuned because you will discover more and more talent in upcoming issues!
Take care,

Matt Belcher,
green
president of Verdatek Solutions, shares his
eco-building expertise.
Building Guru
Growing up in the building business, Matt Belcher has been surrounded by the idea of good design, high quality and energy efficiency nearly his whole life. As a green builder, he long practiced many of the green building guidelines in place today. Edited by Melissa Mauzy
SLHL: Why build green? Or why consider green when remodeling or upgrading your home? Matt: Pure and simple: It makes economic sense. We also have a keen focus on the comfort of the occupants. A home or major remodel is about the largest investment people will make. We focus on the cost to operate and maintain that home including utilities, which is about 60% of most homeowners’ monthly budgets. The investment (initial cost) amount will be pretty similar, but if we can shrink that 60% by at least half that is a real economic savings not just for the life of the mortgage but the life of the building! SLHL: How can a homeowner incorporate green building concepts into their existing home? Matt: It is so much easier now than just a few years ago because of the products you can buy at a competitive cost. Energy is always the low hanging fruit. The best first step is to take stock in what you have and are doing now. An energy audit is a great investment and can provide a homeowner with an itemized to-do list. You do not have to necessarily do everything at once, but each step will pay for itself many times over. Don’t forget about water. Twenty five percent of household energy use is from the treatment, delivery and heating/use of water.
18
Charging the Chevy Volt Hybrid, courtesy of Bommarito, at the Active House USA in Webster Groves. The first of it's kind in North America, the Active House is a sustainable home built by Hibbs Homes, Verdatek Solutions and architect Jeff Day.
SLHL: What is the first step toward building a green residence? Matt: PLANNING! It all starts with a good, experienced team: client, builder and design professional (architect). Every client has a bottom line. Through good design and best combination of building materials and equipment, it’s amazing what we accomplish on limited budgets. As we progress through the planning stage we bring in our trade partners as they bring their experience and cost-effective suggestions, plus as the project proceeds they are already familiar with the project, which makes the construction process more efficient. SLHL: Does it cost more to build with green materials/products? Matt: We have always used quality products to build with that cost a little more than the alternative, but quality is well worth it! Again, it is much easier to get “greener” materials now than just years ago and completion has brought costs in line with those alternatives. Normally, our largest project-cost increases by a large margin are the selection of high-end finish materials (tile, etc.) by the client. But we work with each client to manage each budget line item to get the best return on investment at every step.

STYLEMAKER_0513.indd 22
4/14/13 4:14:58 PM
SLHL: What is the latest in green homes? Matt: On the energy side; L.E.D. lighting due to its durability (long life) and energy performance and even lighting color selection. We just completed a project incorporating daylight as part of our energy budget. That technology is only starting to make its way in to commercial standards. Cool stuff! SLHL: What are the different green certifications? Matt: There are quite a few. The better-known ones are LEED, which started as a commercial standard, and ANSI ICC-700, or the national green building standard. Both contain “holistic” criteria including site development and stormwater runoff all the way through energy and occupant comfort. There are a few focused primarily on energy: Energy Star, Passive House, D.O.E.’s Challenge Home Program and even EPA has a water sense and indoor air program. Since we usually meet the marks in multiple criteria we usually go ahead and certify to those also. It provides us a better level of performance and quality.
SLHL: What special voltage or requirements are needed to charge an electric car in your garage? Matt: There are different voltage requirements depending on car manufacturer, however a 100 amp subpanel usually does the trick. In addition, we can run piping to a garage to allow for the addition of a compressed natural gas (CNG) car charging station. Right now CNG for residential is around $1 a gallon comparatively. Matt Belcher is on the board of directors for the National Association of Home Builders. He also serves as chairman of the National Association of Home Builders Green Building sub-committee. He serves on the code development committee for the International Code Council and the board of the Green Building Initiative. A member of Active House Alliance, Matt was also recently appointed as director of the high performance building research center, which is part of the Midwest Energy Efficiency Consortium at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Mike Kinnikin and his team at Eureka Forge shape customers’ metalwork dreams into reality BY SYLVIA FORBES Photography by Colin Miller/Strauss Peyton

“Everything here is either hot, sharp or dirty,” jokes Mike Kinnikin, describing his 12,000-square-foot metalwork shop, Eureka Forge. Mike, along with 11 other guys, spend their days at the shop creating one-of-a-kind artworks out of steel, bronze, copper, brass, aluminum and other metals. “My dad started this business, and I learned from him. I grew up with it,” Mike says. Eureka Forge has built an international reputation for their design and quality in producing custom architectural metalwork, winning top awards from both the American Institute of Architects and the National Ornamental and Miscellaneous Metals Association. They've become well known for their elegant, tight-curved, sweeping staircase railings. “They're difficult, but we've made so many, we've gotten quite good at them,” says Mike. “We like the challenge.” They tackle both indoor and outdoor metalwork projects of all kinds, making gates, fences, furniture and even sculpture. Much of their work blends decorative elements such as vines, scrolls, flowers and birds with the functional aspects, resulting in spectacular finished pieces. “Artistic design, architectural design and engineering design all go into each piece,” Mike says. “In designing a piece, we listen to what the customer wants, but we also look at the space where it will be installed and try to create something that fits in with the surroundings.” Fabricating the pieces is a collaboration among everyone at the shop. Each person specializes in one or more areas of the process. The shop is arranged in a rotation, starting with a raw materials area, then moving to a cutting area, forging, assembly and finishing areas. “We try to fuse old world techniques with modern technology to be more affordable,” says Mike. “Today, we use computer-aided drafting software to design a piece. We have a programmable cutting machine that can take the raw materials and cut all the pieces to the right size. We utilize power hammers to expedite the forging process,” he explains. They also use modern welding technology, in addition to the old “heat and hammer” method blacksmiths used in the 19th century and before. While the majority of their work is installed in private homes, Eureka Forge also does commercial work. At the Missouri Botanical Garden, their work is spread out all over the garden, from the entrance gates to the guardrails by the koi pond in the Japanese garden, to the gazebo. They redesigned an entry gate at the Frank Lloyd Wright home in Kirkwood because the gate had to be updated to modern code requirements and made bigger to accommodate fire trucks. Mike enjoys his work at Eureka Forge. “I like to work with metals. I like the feel of it, the strength of it, and the ability to heat it up and shape it relatively easily,” he says. “I like to blend the mechanical with the ornamental, such as a gate that works, but is covered with ivy.” He enjoys taking a customer's idea, and with the help of everyone at Eureka Forge, bringing it to life. Perhaps that's why their tag line is “From your imagination, we forge reality.” See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

EdgeWild Restaurant and Winery blends inspiring dishes with their EdgeWild labeled wines.

Thin Mint Gooey Butter Cake
EdgeWild Restaurant and Winery chef Aaron Baggett was cooking at a Chinese restaurant and studying to be an architect when his sister convinced him that he belonged in culinary school. “I went from building buildings to building plates,” says Baggett, a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y. EdgeWild’s most popular dish is an appetizer, Pistachio-Crusted Herbed Goat Cheese topped with white wine-quince syrup. It’s also the first recipe Baggett created for EdgeWild, which opened a year and a half ago. “We want to be wine-oriented and infuse things with wine,” he explains. “We try to bring wine to the party.” EdgeWild is a bonded winery, aging 10 barrels at a time in a small dining room. Co-owner Dee Dee Kohn is a master sommelier who travels regularly to California and buys fine wine in bulk from wineries that produce more than they need, then bottles it under EdgeWild’s label.

“Being a winery allowed us to take that California-vineyard style of food,” Baggett says. “We evolved it to fit St. Louis.” The menu suggests wine pairings for each dish. EdgeWild also offers more than a dozen craft beers. Baggett enjoys finding unusual twists for familiar foods, making meatloaf out of bison and wrapping it in pancetta, for example, and cooking salmon on an applewood plank instead of the more commonly used cedar. “People love the idea that you can get something you know, but not the same way you get it in every other restaurant,” he says. The menu is large, as is the restaurant, which can seat about 420 guests. Stone-fired pizzas, low-calorie entrées and gluten-free dishes are among the offerings. “We try to accommodate all people,” Baggett says. “We have a lot of things going on.” See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

b© St. Louis Homes & Lifestyles Chef Baggett of EdgeWild will demonstrate these three dishes. A taste of the cooking school Menu • Blood Orange Ceviche: Baggett marinates bay scallops and calamari in blood orange juice and lime juice, which firms and “cooks” the seafood. Diced jicama adds crunch, and cilantro, scallions, poblanos and red bell peppers add flavor. • Banana Leaf-Wrapped Snapper: Baggett sprinkles the fish with salt and pepper, wraps it in a banana leaf and cooks it in a bamboo steamer. He tops it with a jerk sauce made with creamy coconut milk and a spicy paste of scotch bonnet peppers, thyme, onions, rum and garlic, then serves the fish with mango-lemongrass basmati rice pilaf and kale braised in dark rum.

Outstanding design deserves recognition, and seven sensational St. Louis design projects have been singled out for our second annual Architectural Finesse Awards. Evaluated by a distinguished panel of Kansas City architects, Scott Bickford, Ron Stallbaumer and Wolfgang Trost, the winning entries include a unique variety of newly built and remodeled living spaces, honored for their architectural ingenuity and integrity and overall aesthetic appeal. And the winners are… the Exterior (page 34), the Mud Room (page 35), the Before & After (page 36), the Lower Level/Bar (page 38), the Library (page 39), the Exterior Elevation (page 40), and the Outdoor Living Area (page 41). Jeff Day & Associates While challenged with a site that lacked inspiration and was void of natural surroundings, Jeff Day & Associates had the freedom to design a home that would make a strong statement. Contributing to the strong statement are the home’s roofline, windows, exquisite woodworking and stonework. The majority of the home’s second floor is built into the roof structure. Recessed dormers provide natural light into the workstations of the loft space. Above the garage, custom designed windows along the north and south sides of the house allow natural light to stream into the two private bedroom suites. Beautifully designed, the home is also very energy efficient. Highlights include a geothermal HVAC system, 2x6 exterior frame walls with spray foam insulation and a super-insulated roof structure. The foundation is a pre-fabricated concrete panel system insulated to R38.
Why the judges love it:
Unique and whimsical in composition, the exterior of this home demonstrates excellent workmanship and detail. The consistent use of unifying design elements give the home a strong and inviting look. Photography courtesy of Jeff Day & Associates

the MUD
ROOM
A place for everything, and everything in its place… thanks to Mitchell Wall Architecture and Design. The firm designed a mud room/family center for an active family to better accommodate their busy lifestyle. The challenge was to design a room that complemented and blended with the surrounding rooms. With cubbies for each family member and a center island work station with additional cubbies for storing hobbies, gifts and wrapping paper, the family is able to stay organized. The island also has built-in docking stations for electronics. Built-in benches make removing or changing shoes easy. A unique feature is the doggy bath. While used to hose down the family pup, the shower has also come in handy for the homeowner, who is an avid gardener. It’s been a great place for her to remove her dirty garden shoes or hose off one of the kids after a tough day of play.
Why the judges love it:
The space created is comfortable and inviting while still elegant. The mud room looks like it functions well and is accessible for the family. Photography by Alise O’Brien

SPACE, LLC. With the challenge of gut-renovating a 100-year-old home, Space, LLC and their client worked closely to transform the dated century home into a more functional layout for the family of five. Removing walls and installing new structure achieved an open, cheerful flow. The main thrust of the design removed an existing narrow staircase only accessible through a bedroom on the main floor. A new stairway was designed and placed in the center of the house forming a central focus for a new modern open floor plan radiating out from the stairs. The architects detailed the stairs to highlight the end grain of the riser and side-exposed treads, mitering all connections to create a monolithic wood appearance. The staircase is grounded by a custom designed and fabricated steel handrail. Natural light flows into the center of the home through a new skylight positioned above the stairs.
Why the judges love it:
The stair addition is a well-designed transformation of the space. The space has an effective handling of natural and fixture lighting. The consistent and even-handed selection of materials and furnishings creates a modern open floor plan. The non-code railing is very cool! Photography by Anne Matheis

the lower
level/bar
Directions in Design, Inc. Architect: John Peckham, AIA Transforming an unfinished room in their basement into a bar area, Direction in Design, Inc. created a space that is an extension of their client’s lower level family room. The back of the bar is placed between two closet doors, which were removed and replaced with lighted drywall niches displaying six vibrant hand blown glass pieces. Between the niches, the back bar is tiled in a horizontal glass tile in tones of taupe, beige and brown. A lighted mirror over the tile illuminates the bar. Stacked wenge wood blocks with lighted glass shelves highlight the back bar. Stained in the same dark wenge finish as the back bar, the front bar has three-dimensional panels that create a wave look. For visual interest, a band of horizontal glass tile around the taupe and brown granite countertop contains accent fiber optic lights that change color and create visual interest in the space. The lower level family room is an extension of the bar and has an octagonal wall that features custom painted textured artwork and a custom designed bench with wedge back pillows.
Why the judges love it:
Everything about the bar is awesome – material selection, scale of elements, layout, lighting, artwork and furnishings. The result is an elegant yet casual space. Photography by Alise O’Brien

the LIBRARY
Directions in Design, Inc. Architect: John Peckham, AIA Directions in Design started with a clean palette when designing the library in a high rise condo, with the goal of designing a warm, inviting, relaxing yet functional space that was rich in architectural detail. Custom leaded and beveled glass doors lead into the library. The walnut wood ceiling features a detailed crossbeam layout, which allowed down lights to be nestled into the beams. All the millwork in the library is walnut. Two custom desks were created for each homeowner to accommodate their storage, filing and computer wiring needs. The shelves have a moulded detail on the front edge that frames glass inserts so light can shine through the unit. Special granite, “Blue Jeans,” was found in Florida and surrounds the fireplace. The flat screen TV was built into the upper structure with crown moulding and fluted pilasters.
Why the judges love it:

Elevation
Bozich Construction Architect: William Cover
Rustic, mountain-themed landscaping and cobblestone laid pavers leading you from the street to the entry of the home add to the drama and grandeur of the exterior elevation of this home built by Bozich Construction. The exterior is done in true stucco with hand glazing. The entry is constructed of cut aux vases limestone and balustrade from Earthworks. The steps and porch are also made from the same materials. The Porte cochere is done in a radius construction and features a compound arch. Significant engineering was needed to form the arch so that it is supportive of the structure. The stone pieces were laid first with a wood template to ensure consistent mortar joints so there is no fanning of the joints. Stones were hand cut to shape to form consistent pieces. The center stone is 33 tall and weighs over 200 pounds.
Why the judges love it:
The classic nature of the varied forms has a consistency that keeps them cohesive. You can tell this space was thoroughly designed from floor to ceiling. The masonry work is beautifully executed. Photography by Michael Jacobs

living AREA
Bozich Construction Architect: William Cover
Elements such as full stonewalls, railings and flagstone paving give this outdoor living space, created by Bozich Construction, a natural feeling with all the comforts of home. Rustic timber beams that carry out from the home’s interior hearth room create a framed roof look while protecting the space from the outdoor elements. The ceiling is hand scraped and hewn with tongue-and-grooved construction. An outdoor kitchen is equipped for entertaining with a grill and refrigerator. The homeowners and their guests can pull up a seat around the kitchen island, made from three-inch-thick, non-lamintated sandstone. A cozy seating area is positioned around the stone fireplace making this spot functional for all seasons. The rustic mantel is constructed from reclaimed wood. The flagstone paving carries from the covered living area to the pool area.
Why the judges love it:
This outdoor living area is well designed all around. The material selection is spot on for the look they were trying to achieve. The end result is a warm and inviting room that is a great social space. Photography by Michael Jacobs

the 18th century, British statesman Edmund Burke theorized that for men to love their country, their country should be lovely. Burke’s constituents in the British Isles took him at his word. In what has been called “the Golden Age of Gardening,” kings, queens and commoners alike had a passion for plants. As explorers roamed the oceans and investigated new lands, they brought home new specimens, seeds and bulbs, particularly for fruits and flowers. Gardens that had once been a collection of green hedges, accented with a few flowering native species, suddenly began overflowing with color. In Colonial Virginia plants from both the Old World and the New flourished in the gentle climate and gardens took on a uniquely American appearance. George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, in addition to being Founding Fathers, were amateur botanists and avid gardeners. English formality remained in neatly clipped hedges and geometric patterns, but those regular lines were softened by flowering vines, fruit bearing trees and flowers from around the world. Reproductions of these gardens can be seen at Mount Vernon, Monticello and in Colonial Williamsburg, where even small gardens beckon visitors with easy swinging entry gates, inviting archways and crushed shell or pink brick walks. Benches to sit, rest and enjoy are an important aspect of garden architecture. Growing up in Tidewater, Va., Debby Robins absorbed all these gardening principles. When she and her husband Steve purchased their Frontenac residence 22 years ago, no doubt attracted by the Colonial-style, story-and-half architecture, she began working to create around their home a quintessential English/American garden with a little dash of Missouri. “One of the first things I did was put a line of dogwoods and redbuds along the back of the property line because they reminded me of home,” Debby recalls. Happily both Virginia and Missouri share the dogwood as a state tree and her selections flourished. Her other visions were to have a different view of the garden from each window of her home and to create for her grandchildren “unexpected delights” in their grandmother’s garden. Both Debby and Steve actively planted the shady areas of their new garden with layers of hostas and feather-flowered astilbes in every color, along with traditional Virginia boxwoods. They also created a multifaceted sun garden with succulents, topiary and a koi pond. “We went to the (Missouri) Botanical Garden and researched plants that would attract birds and butterflies,” Debby explains. “We made sure to have seed so the birds came back every year, and we also had a water feature so they had something to drink in the summer. We’ve cultivated quite a flock of hummingbirds.” Little by little, they added a stone pathway so they could walk entirely around the house and go from area to area, visiting different types of gardens in each. In 2005, they made major renovations to both ends of their home and added a swimming pool, two-car garage and circular drive in front. With many existing garden areas torn up and plants needing relocation, Debby decided to bring in professional help enlisting Ron Goedeker of Landscape St. Louis. "We entered the picture after the remodel had already devastated the landscape, so our goal and challenge was to help the Robins restore the grandeur of their gardens by working with the architecture of their home and listening closely to their vision," Ron says.
A lush lawn panel-lined with redbud, serviceberry, boxwood, hosta, epimedium, liriope, daylily and seasonal colors sweeps toward the backyard pool area.

Working together the Robins added layers of vegetation that would bloom in sequence beginning with azaleas and hydrangeas and using small flowering trees as a backdrop. Tidewater native Virginia sweetspire figures prominently in the new landscape for its lovely tassel-like early summer flowers, brilliant fall color and interesting branching in the winter landscape. “Ron introduced me to (Missouri native) red twig dogwood that adds so much color and interest to the landscape during the winter,” Debby notes. Charming colonial railings now accent the lovely brick walk that leads from the driveway to the front door of the Robins’s home. Flowers spill over the flagstone retaining walls that line the walkway and white benches invite visitors to stop, rest and take in the landscape. Color is everywhere thanks to an artful mix of perennials and annuals. Each window in the home has a picture perfect view. Truly appreciative of the gorgeous and welcoming English/American country garden that surrounds their home, Debby and Steve do take time to smell the flowers. They walk around their home via the garden pathway several times each day, Debby says. Two wrought iron chairs
48
and a small table next to the koi pond provide the perfect spot for a glass of wine when the day is done. Debby is never far from her mission to create unexpected garden delights for her grandchildren. The koi pond is always a fascination. Several of the koi have become old friends. “In the winter I put wire mesh over the pond to catch the debris and place a pipe in the pond so air can get down to the bottom if the surface freezes and the koi are there the next summer,” Debby explains. She also created a fairy garden filled with child-sized features and plants that particularly appeal to her younger grandchildren who live in Los Angeles. “I added a toad house that was made by an artist in the Shenandoah Valley,” Debby says. “The 5-year-old told his mother he couldn’t wait to get back to St. Louis to see the toad house. Shortly before his next visit we were out gardening and found a real toad. When he walked into our house, we told him we had a toad for his toad house. Those are the kind of memories I want to create for my grandchildren.” See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

Brought toLife Living retaining walls breathe life into your yard By Melissa Mauzy Your garden no longer has to be restricted to a horizontal layout. Vertical gardens in the form of living retaining walls are an ideal way to manage grade changes on your property. Other benefits include storm water management, air quality improvement, energy savings and noise reduction. “You can plant your entire garden within the pockets of the wall,” says Mark Woolbright, owner and founder of The Living Wall Co. “Even vegetation can grow on your wall.” With the correct planting selections, your living retaining wall will thrive. Ivy, vines, grasses and droughttolerant plantings such as succulents are ideal for living retaining walls. Several local landscapers give the following suggestions for living walls.
Ann Lapides, Sugar Creek Gardens
"A new variety of Sedums, Cherry Tart, are ideal selections for living walls. This new cultivar offers never-before-seen cherry-red foliage and a short, compact mounded habit. It holds its red foliage color from spring through fall. Large clusters of pink flowers top the colorful leaves."
52
Richard Poynter, Poynter Landscaping
"This photo is of a granite boulder lean wall with “Sedum Kamtschaticum” growing between the boulders. The roots spread well, but below ground, so it fills in without climbing on other plants. It is very tolerant of St. Louis weather extremes, and flowers yellow in spring and again in late summer. It stays short at 4 -6”."
Eric Ringhofer, Green Guys
"In terms of planting, the plants need to match the environment--shady, full sun, partial sun, etc. I like to mix flowering perennials with more structural plants that help retain. I also utilize some plant specimens to draw the eye to specific points of interest. Japanese maples and a weeping atlas blue cedar are the specimens. I utilized a variety of junipers, sumac, ivy, potato vines and numerous flowering perennials to fill the gaps. Along the same lines, in this case, we built a cascading waterfall that is the showcase of this wall."

Natural Beauty Organic elements infuse a tiny home with warmth By Katie O’Connor Photography by Anne Matheis
When it comes to decorating small spaces, many believe in the “less is more” tack. But Nick Decker favors the opposite approach. His Lafayette Square townhouse, just 1,200 square feet, is practically stuffed to the gills. That doesn’t mean things are just strewn about or packed in without care—no, the trick to Nick’s approach is careful selection and placement of furniture and accessories. The living room’s seating arrangement, featuring a cushy loveseat piled with plump pillows and two occasional chairs, is close-set and angled to focus on the fireplace. A large round table perfectly fills the small dining area, while upstairs, a folding screen
delineates the sleeping and dressing areas of the bedroom and a desk fitted into a nook serves as a small office. Dotted about are cabinets and armoires for storage, and carefully placed side tables display artfully arranged accessories. The result is a tidy, pleasing coziness, which is exactly the effect he was after. “I wanted it to be warm and cozy, like a little retreat,” he explains about his home’s décor. “So I approached it like decorating a cottage. I was influenced by a trip to Savannah, Ga.; they have these tiny gardens that are just loaded up with plants.” Plants play a big role in the townhome’s décor. Nick, following in his STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM MAY 2013

parents’ footsteps, is a florist with Ken Meisner Florist, and unsurprisingly, he has a deep-seated appreciation for the beauty of nature. Flowers, branches, pinecones, leaves and other natural elements figure prominently in every room. Dried vines climb up a corner and dangle over the edge of a tall bookshelf; bamboo shoots glued to the wall cleverly hide a painting mishap; branches dramatically fill the vertical space above the fireplace, and a striking horizontal arrangement featuring dried pomegranates, branches and pheasant feathers fills out the sofa table with color and texture. “My goal was to bring nature indoors,” Nick says. “I love being around things that are natural and organic. They look like they have some age to them.” That natural theme is carried through to other elements of the home. The dining room’s chairs, though painted olive green, are wicker, as are
58
the baskets supporting the coffee table’s glass top; tables and armoires feature natural wood. Even Nick’s color choices—a neutral tan, a brick red, a comforting deep blue—were “all about reflecting nature,” he says. Nick has personalized the home even further by placing objects with history throughout the space, such as the pottery pieces he made in college and an artful porcelain bowl that belonged to his parents, as well as touches that express a playful side, like the stone gargoyle above the living room’s sideboard that sports a pair of sunglasses. And of course, photos of family and friends are found everywhere. “I think it makes a world of difference in a home,” he says. See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

Listening to the Land
The Shirvington family individually crafts each grape in their South Australian vineyard.
BY Lorraine Raguseo PhotographY COURTESY OF Quintessential Wines and David Bryant, Wilunga, South Australia

When spring finally blossoms in Missouri, especially after what seems like an endless winter of gray skies, snow and cold, one cannot help but notice the renewal of nature, from the budding of the trees and shrubs with new leaves to the first flowers of the season poking their way up through the no-longer-frozen earth, and blossoming into colorful bouquets. Of course, those who work with the land are even more attuned to the change of seasons than we city-dwellers and suburbanites. Vineyard owners that take a hands-on interest in their vines’ health and well-being are often rewarded with the kind of grapes that most often find their way into some of the best wines on the market. For instance, Shirvington is the name of a small-production wine that has enjoyed some of the highest ratings ever awarded to Australian wines by the famed critic Robert M. Parker. Only two varietals are planted in the Shirvington vineyards‌Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, the signature red grape of Australia. When the second vintage of Shirvington wines were released (the 2001vintage), the Shiraz was awarded an almost unprecedented 99 points, with the Cabernet from that year close behind with a 96 rating. Since then, every vintage of Shirvington has been rated above 90 points.

Bottom right Carla Castro, Mark Shirvington, Lynne and Paul Shirvington.
Paul Shirvington and his wife Lynne (with their sons Mark and Tony) have been close to the land since they purchased a small parcel of prime land, called Redwind, in the McLaren Vale region of South Australia in 1996. With careful vineyard management, they feel they are individually crafting each and every grape from this vineyard. This is most evident in their soon-to-be-released 2010 Shiraz that has been chosen to be part of the McLaren Vale “Scarce Earth” Project, which is a celebration of McLaren Vale's best Shiraz vineyards reaching their fullest expression through wines from a single block in the vineyards. And, this homage to the land extends to the fresh, natural and healthy foods they eat at home on a regular basis. While enjoying blazing red sunsets from her large kitchen windows looking out onto the vineyards, Lynne might be tossing together a fresh spring vegetable salad that has a just-picked spinach base and whatever vegetables are ready in the garden at the time. One very popular McLaren Vale dish is the Middle Eastern Dukkah…a healthy blend of nuts (shelled and roasted pistachio nuts and almonds), seeds (coriander, fennel, cumin and sesame) and spices (crushed red pepper flakes, smoked Spanish paprika, coarse sea salt and crushed black
peppercorns). You dunk a piece of crusty, warm homemade bread into extra-virgin olive oil and then into the Dukkah for an addictive appetizer, or sprinkle the Dukkah over Lynne’s fresh vegetable salad. Shirvington’s robust yet elegant wines are best served with a wide variety of meats. Australian lamb is the most famous pairing with most Shirazes, but these reds also shine with Lynne’s special beef casserole, which is a blend of the finest Australian tenderloin, diced and combined in a pressure cooker with fresh carrots, onions and her secret ingredient – a bit more than a splash of Shiraz. Like winemaking, cooking runs in the Shirvington family. Son Mark also has a signature dish – Beef Espadada. In his version of the Portuguese recipe, Mark marinates the beef in Shiraz prior to roasting it to perfection on an outdoor spit over wood. When you add one of the hand-crafted Shirvington Shirazes or Cabs to Lynne’s Dukkah, vegetable salad and beef casserole, or Mark’s Espadada, you have an amazing way to celebrate the season of renewal. Architectural details give way to a Turn-of-the-century Industrial home By Melissa Mauzy Photography courtesy of Brendel Architects
A 20,000-square-foot, turn-of-the-century industrial space would be any architect's dream project. For Jeannie Brendel, Brendel Architects, this dream home has been a collaborative project for more than 10 years. Now nearly complete, the architecturally savvy elements are shining. Working with builder Chris Pagano, Pagano Development, as well as countless talented craftsmen, the homeowner and Jeannie have created a turn-of-the-century industrial space sure to inspire. Detailed elements include ornamental ironwork custom designed by Eureka Forge. Here are some of the exceptional architectural features in the modern masterpiece. Left: Exterior at rear. Looking up towards the tower from the rear of the home provides a dramatic view. The tower sits 24’ above the main-level floor and 36’ above the grade. Temperature- and moisture-activated radiant floor systems were installed to control snow. A dumb waiter runs from the lower level all the way up to the tower. An automatic screen system can close off the tower for all-weather use.

Clockwise: Master bath grotto. The master bath is the ultimate place for relaxation. A 16’ wide octagonal grotto features a faux stone waterfall, five copper lion head fountains and a 4’ tall skylight at the peak supported by a mahogany truss system. The heated tub has adjustable water levels and contains jets on the sides and bubblers on the floor. Ductwork for the Desert Aire HVAC system is hidden in columns and arches above the windows. Supply air grills direct air flow across the windows to control condensation. Rear foyer. Custom interior doors with mahogany stiles and rails with cherry panels lead the way to the garage. Stainless-steel appliqué with gold plating adorns the rear entry doors. The ceiling has a recessed tray with mahogany trim. Bethel white granite floor tiles with Labordorite green accents contrast the rich wood doors. Milk glass rose carving. Abraham Mohler created the custom carving with innovative material and technique. Cut from 1 ¼” milk glass, the carving is sandblasted and sculpted with diamond abrasives. The glass piece is strategically placed at the rear wall of the stairwell and is also visible from the foyer. Opposite page: Stairwell. The custom-crafted stairwell runs from the lower level to the third-floor tower. Standing 34’ tall, the stairwell contains four fluted steel columns for support. The eight stair runs, which include the risers and railings, are made from 100 percent recycled ornamental iron custom designed by Eureka Forge. Granite stair treads and landings are polished on the top and bottom and are 1 ¼” thick.

Sustainability shines at a solar farm in Eureka
By Melissa Mauzy Photography courtesy of Jeannie Brendel, Brendel Architects
Just 30 miles from downtown St. Louis resides the Midwest’s largest private residential solar farm at the time of its installation. One of the top five nationally, the photo voltaic system was installed by Bates Electric to power the approximate 20,000 square-foot, turn-of-the-century industrial space designed by Jeannie Brendel, Brendel Architects, and built by Chris Pagano, Pagano Development. (Also featured on page 55 of this issue). The farm, which is adjacent to the home, produces approximately 40 kilowatts of energy per hour when running at maximum capacity. The system is designed to provide up to 39,360 watts of electricity during optimal sunlight hours. It offsets the usage from the power company and in certain circumstances could allow the homeowner to be able to sell his electricity back to the power company. A total of 192 Evergreen 205 watt panels cover both slopes of the structure’s roof. Solar energy is converted and transferred to the home through four Fronius IG Plus 10 kW inverters that are each fed from three series strings of 16 modules. A solar roof can be an effective energy alternative when replacing your current roof or when building a new home. “Solar panels are primarily made of silicon, which has electrons that become energized as they are exposed to the sun,” says Andrew Bates, vice president and
68
chief operating officer of Bates Electric. “The energy is stored and then released through the electrical circuits going from the solar arrays and into the home. While it is possible to have enough solar panels to operate your entire house, most homeowners are looking to supplement their utility bills.” According to the Solar Energy Industries Association, solar panel installations grew by 76 percent in the U.S. in 2012. The Missouri Department of Natural Resources offers several incentives to homeowners who install solar panels. Currently, a 30 percent federal tax credit is offered. Ameren Missouri also offers a $2 per watt-installed rebate for systems up to 25kW. Visit the Department of Natural Resources website for more information. If you are interested in solar energy panels, contact a local provider for an energy audit. The most effective location for panels is a direct southern view of the sun to capture the most energy possible. However, panels can be mounted in any direction but will function at a diminished capacity. Many other factors also must be investigated: pitch of the roof, type of shingles, spacing of joist, items penetrating the roof such as vents, flues, etc. Not only could you be saving money on your monthly energy bills, but also you can be sustaining the environment at the same time. Cape Wind is the name of what will be America’s first offshore wind farm located off the coast of Cape Cod, Mass. Cape Wind has secured all of its federal and state permits and its commercial lease and is now in its financing phase to secure the capital required to begin construction. Cape Wind’s 130 offshore wind turbines will supply 75 percent of the electricity used on Cape Cod and the Islands of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket, creating jobs, producing clean energy and helping to build a new offshore clean energy industry in the United States.

Security Building, St. Louis, Mo. The Security Building is the first historic building in Missouri to receive LEED Silver certification. Originally designed by the renowned firm of Peabody, Stearns and Furber, the 117,000-square-foot structure was renovated by The Lawrence Group. The Lawrence Group provided architectural, interior design and development and construction services. The six-level atrium addition above the domed lobby entrance was the centerpiece of the building. The
Lawrence Group saved energy by creating an atrium within the natural space formed by the U-shaped building, making interior walls of the buildings’ original exterior. The Lawrence Group removed years of thick black coating on a dramatic glass dome ceiling in the lobby, creating a skylight above the atrium that lets natural light spill into the lobby.
