slhl HELLO
It is easy to spend hours at Sunderland Brothers putting together beautiful combinations of tile when updating your bathroom or kitchen!
Be Cool…. When it came to choosing the top bathroom designs of 2013 in our Baths of the Year contest, you wouldn’t believe how hard it was for the St. Louis design professionals judging to narrow the field first to the top four baths in each category, and then further to the top two. Making the task especially challenging this year was the sheer number of entries! Melissa Mauzy, SLHL managing editor, and I were mere bystanders throughout the judging session, privy to what is sensational and why, while keeping the judges on track. Yes…it gets a little crazy at times. Creativity in design layout, product selection and cohesiveness are the ultimate qualities shining in the seven winning baths. Freestanding tubs from uber contemporary to Old World dominate this year making it apparent that homeowners are

willing to knock down walls to make room for one! Sink faucets coming out of the wall, shower water cascading from the ceiling and vanities resembling furniture are a few trends that we are seeing in many of the bath remodels. Craftsmen also are installing beautiful tile as a horizontal, vertical or diagonal design, or incorporating all three directions in the bath area. Bathrooms of today are no longer just a room of necessity but also an expression of art. It is crystal clear that while St. Louis homeowners are remodeling and updating their living spaces, the key element for a sucuessful summer project is keeping cool. Keep your design sensibility set on LIGHT, and set that home thermostat on CHILL.
Enjoy,
Suzie Osterloh Publisher/Owner

It’s all done with smoke and mirrors – minus the smoke BY SYLVIA FORBES Photography by Colin Miller/Strauss Peyton

Ready to boggle your mind? The new showroom of Barron Mirror Glass & Door encourages possibility thinking with all the many displays and choices for home renovators. “This year, in January, we moved our showroom to Chesterfield, at 125 Chesterfield Industrial Boulevard, and it is drop-dead gorgeous. We were the largest showroom in St. Louis before, and now we’re twice as big. We have huge displays that give customers lots of ideas of what they can do in their homes,” says Tom Barron, owner, who designs most of the custom pieces they produce. “I love to challenge myself to design something that nobody else does. I can go into a room and visualize the possibilities. When I lay it out to a customer, I love it when their eyes get big, and they realize that an area of their home can be a highlight, where before they didn’t know what to do with it,” he says. Tom has lots of ideas. He’s designed everything from glass staircases, floors and handrails to mirrored bars, fireplaces, furniture and even abstract art. Barron has added painted glass to kitchens as backsplashes and sandblasted company logos on glass for lobbies. They’ve created reception desks using frosted glass, and installed a mirrored powder room with Venetian accents of rosettes, scallops and intricate edging on the mirrors. Their list of projects goes on to include glass fencing around a pool, a mirrored grand piano, a mirrored ceiling medallion in a hotel lobby, as well as a glass floor installed at a restaurant in Clayton, which allows customers to look into the wine cellar. “Lately,” says Tom, “the shower door industry has really taken off due to the heavy, frameless durable glass now available. This is the biggest part of what I do today.” Installing shower doors is more than just putting in the glass. Today, customers may want designs etched or sandblasted into the glass, beveled edges and other custom touches to make each door a personal reflection of the owner’s taste. Barron also works commercially installing shower doors at the Ritz Carlton, Moonrise Hotel, Cheshire Inn and other area hotels. Tom realizes that he couldn’t have built his company to the success it is without a great staff. “I have awesome employees,” he says. “Out of 15, seven have been with me over 20 years, and four more have worked here more than 10 years. That’s where I really shine—I’ve got talented employees in every position. They have input in each project.” Robby Dirkers, who has been with Barron for more than 25 years, is a key to their success. “Everything we do here is a group effort,” explains Robby, the installation manager. “Tom is incredible—he thinks outside the box. I like being outside the box and doing something that is a challenge, or doing something that other companies say they don’t do. We excel in custom work—we’re not afraid to take that extra step. The best thing in my job every day is seeing one-of-a-kind completed projects that are the end result of a collaboration of the customer’s and our ideas.” “We love what we do, and that’s why we’ve been in business 37 years,” says Tom. “And that’s why our tag line is: ‘Creativity unlimited, Quality unsurpassed.’” See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources. Amy Studebaker Design More than 250 square feet
old world charm
When pulling this project together, Amy Studebaker of Amy Studebaker Design made sure the master bath was not only functional but unique, with an Old World Tuscan feel. To enhance that feel, architectural details such as beams on the ceiling with carved supports as well as a beam extending from the wall to enclose the shower head were added. Concrete pavers set with wide mortar joints also set the feel for Old World charm. Challenged to keep the space unique, Amy opted for antique/vintage pieces for both vanities. The wife’s vanity is a wonderful shade of blue enhanced with a deep cocoa-bean glaze topped off with an antique mirror. A Sherle Wagner cherub faucet sits atop the travertine counter. On the husband’s side, an antique serving piece with dolphin handles gives the space a distinctly different feel from his wife’s side. Given its own niche, the stone tub adds textures and interest to the bath. To add warmth and a bit of drama, creamy white silk damask drapes frame the entry to the tub space. Melding today’s modern luxuries with unique pieces created an old world ambiance.
Why the judges love it:
Elegant creativity is abounding in this master bath. The ceiling beams are beautiful. In the bath area, the drapes framing the tub are a nice touch as is the small table next to the tub. You feel the luxury of the space, sometimes forgetting you are in a bathroom. Photography by Alise O’Brien.
Mike Beck, Beck/Allen Cabinetry
Over 15 years ago, armed with their extensive knowledge of the design and construction process, Mike Beck and business partner Lee Allen opened Beck/Allen Cabinetry. Today, with over 20 employees, Mike leads a team of designers and operates two showrooms while remaining a full-time designer serving homeowners, remodelers and homebuilders. *Mike did not judge category 4, more than 250 sq. feet, because he provided the cabinetry for one of the submissions.
Robin Bretz, The Jeweled Cottage
Robin Bretz is the owner of The Jeweled Cottage in Glendale. She has been a kitchen and bath designer for 11 years. A member of the National Kitchen and Bath Association, Robin believes that design is all about the details. In addition to designing kitchens and baths, Robin also designs home offices, closets, wet bars, butler’s pantries and more. Gegg Design & Cabinetry 180-250 square feet
open and understated
As part of a full-scale remodel, the homeowners of this 4,500-square-foot home needed a master bath that was efficient and functional. Working with Gegg Design & Cabinetry, the new master bath gives the visual sense of one large space while being divided into four zones: vanities; bath; shower; and water closet. A sleek, freestanding tub opened up the space, while an arched ceiling added over the tub defines the zone. Open shelving was incorporated at one end of the tub for functional towel storage. A tall cabinet was added outside of the arched tub area for closed tall storage. The shower in the center of the room is the shining star of the master retreat. To keep the shower open yet still have a sense of privacy, Gegg incorporated glass into two walls forming the outer walls of the shower. On the wall facing the bath entry, a vertical wall, which does not go to the ceiling, splits the glass wall into two narrow sections. The result is visibility, glass and light without giving up privacy. Freestanding and furniture-like vanities pull the room together.
Why the judges love it:
Classic and beautiful, this bathroom is simple and clean. The floor choice is stunning and shines against the white fixtures and cabinetry. An instant dressing area is created with the mirrored armoire. Photography courtesy of Gegg Design & Cabinetry.

Joni Spear Interior Design Less than 180 square feet
contemporary yet historical
With the goal to honor the era of the home while being historically correct, the homeowners of this fabulous master bath enlisted the help of Joni Spear, Joni Spear Interior Design, when adding a three-story addition on their University City home. The new bath addition allowed for a spacious master bath, thanks to the help of the architect and engineer who crafted the floor plans. The Ann Sacks honed marble floor in Asher Gray immediately draws one into the space. Each tile had to be hand cut and configured into the herringbone pattern. The result is a dramatic punch to the serene space. A Toulouse Victoria and Albert Soaking tub sits under a large window. A contemporary floor mounted tub fill by Jado is affixed to the right of the tub. Grohe fittings, Ginger accessories and Robern medicine cabinets complete the look.
Why the judges love it: This bath perfectly fits the period of the home with a splash of contemporary. The sliding doors, floor tile and tub make for a dramatic entrance. The dark contrast of the vanities with the all white is nice and gives the space a handsome feel. Photography by Matthew Harrer Photography.

K-Build Design POWDER ROOMS
masterful mosaic
Stepping in to the 30-square-foot powder room, your eye is immediately drawn to the dramatic platinum tile mosaic. K-Build Design conceptualized and executed this stunning bath. Bordered in a deep-gray marble to coordinate with the Martha Stewart paint collection Thundercloud on the floating vanity and trim, the tiled wall adds a unique art element to the small space. The veined-marble floor climbs up the wall and frames the mosaic piece. The custom vanity allows for plenty of storage. The powder room is lit by a combination of a Eurofase sconce with soft LED lights under the vanity and one 4-inch LED can light on separate switches. Platinum accessories complete the polished look.
Why the judges love it:
This powder room is tasteful and sophisticated while also functional. The floating vanity really opens up the space. The tiled mosaic adds an artistic element reminiscent of a waterfall with no water. Photography by Anne Matheis.

comfort with privacy
Marc Christian Fine Cabinetry was tasked with creating a spacious and luxurious bathroom with a feel of comfort and privacy in this 331-square-foot bath. The bathroom includes private his-and-her vanity/dressings areas each with its own whirlpool tub. A large, oversized walk-in shower is shared between the two tubs. The cabinetry was designed and handcrafted by Marc Christian Fine Cabinetry with an antiqued French dĂŠcor in mind. The tile throughout the bath was hand selected and designed to fit the space. The tub decks and vanity tops are a creamy Calcutta gold marble and contrast nicely with the finish of the cabinetry. The mixture of Calcutta honed marble and 2x12 tumbled marble that make up the mosaic surrounding the tub adds elegant interest.
Why the judges love it:
The designers nailed the French inspiration in this bathroom. It is very romantic and soft. The two tubs allow each homeowner their desired privacy. Photography by Anne Matheis.

In this sophisticated master suite addition, the homeowners were looking for a space to call their own. In need of more space, their previous bathroom lacked storage space, countertop space and flow. On the homeowners’ wish list for their new bath was a freestanding soaking tub and a large tiled shower with multiple showerheads and body sprays, in addition to more space and better lighting. Liston created an exquisite entrance to the master bath with 8’ tall knotty-alder sliding wood doors that frame the Aquatic floor-mounted soaking tub. Resembling rustic, distressed wood, the plank tile flooring adds a causal element to the subdued color palette. Complementing the flooring, maple species painted and glazed cabinetry in a rich angora finish blends traditional and transitional elements. The shower was tiled to resemble Carrera Marble, and the Cambria quartz countertops in New Quay finish unify the space. Polished nickel faucets, lighting and bath accessories finish the space.
Why the judges love it:
This bathroom is timeless. The color selection of the wood is great. Allowing the mirrors to be adjustable makes the vanity space so practical. The mixing of materials gives the space interest. Overall, the bathroom has a classic style and a dressing room-like feel. Photography by Anne Matheis.

contemporary calm When the homeowners had utilized their master bath beyond capacity, brooksBerry Kitchens & Baths was called in to open up their space and provide more storage. Eliminating cabinets and replacing them with more efficient closets, the homeowners gained more storage and a sleek, minimalist master bath. The modern, peaceful aesthetic is highlighted by the organically shaped aromatherapy soaking tub, which floats between the wall of windows and a linear wet/dry bench seat. Behind the tub, a beautiful wall of undulating lozenge-like, penny-round metal and glass mosaic tiles provides an artistic element. A glass cube steam shower is equipped with hand and body sprays. The wood-look tiled floor seamlessly continues into the shower. brooksBerry created a sense of lightness in the space with multiple layers of controllable illumination,
indirect under-cabinet/under-bench lighting, makeup/shaving lights and recessed general lighting with an emphasis on natural light from the windows. The Parsons table-inspired vanities feature an uplift door medicine cabinet, and an alternating sandblasted/clear glass mirrored wall diffuses sconce light. This master bath is the ultimate in relaxation.
Why the judges love it:
The space in this bathroom was used wisely. The tub and toilet selections are excellent. Hung independently, the decorative wall pieces are like mini sculptures, not just one piece of art. Arranged around the floor-to-ceiling limestone fireplace is a varied assembly of comfortable seating, one-of-a-kind furnishings, and personal accessories that make this the owners’ favorite place to relax. Atop the inlaid dining table is a mixture of antique and contemporary glassware, and the crystal chandelier was chosen by the husband for this space.
“ Traditional with a twist.” That’s the owner’s description of the spectacular residence she and her family have enjoyed for the past 10 years. Custom-built and tucked into a lushly wooded cul-de-sac in Ladue, the 10,000-square-foot twostory is a showstopper – uniquely personal and reflective of the family’s many interests and multi-faceted lifestyle. Now empty nesters, the owners are longtime St. Louisans and the parents of three grown children. The husband is a physician, and the wife’s former career in real estate is evidenced by her passion for design. Bustling with activity, the home continues to evolve on a near-daily basis, and a swarm of workmen is currently finishing off the lower-level entertainment area. When preparing to build, the couple loved the location and wanted plenty of living space, but didn’t want to appear “pretentious.” As a result,
the expansive residence is set well back from the street and thoroughly screened by trees. Architecturally, the central foyer plan offered a “comfortable flow” for entertaining, and the hearth room, kitchen and master suite were the owners’ priorities. Beyond its functional, free-flowing spatial arrangement, there’s a reason this exquisite home has such a distinctive ambience. Every feature of every room has been meticulously selected by the wife, in collaboration with Susan Block of The Designing Block, interior designer John Moore and Gringo Jones’ Rod Nelson, who provides flowers and seasonal decorations. (She also credits her mom, an award-winning Georgia artist, for plenty of advice and shopping companionship.) While it might be technically accurate to characterize the décor as eclectic, that would hardly do it justice. Acquisitions chosen for this STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM AUGUST 2013

home – many from the showrooms of North Carolina – are artfully blended with treasured pieces from former homes and an occasional item that simply caught the owner’s eye. “It’s a little contemporary here and a little 18th-century there,” she says, with a casual sweep of her hand. “If I see something I like and it will look good in the space, I’ll use it.” Far from a mélange of disparate elements, however, each furnishing, every detail, fabric and color, contributes to the home’s remarkably harmonious effect. For example, the step-down, two-story hearth room (“the room we live in,” according to the owner) was designed around its Oriental

rug, one of several favorite pieces from a previous home, including the Widdicomb coffee and library tables. In spite of its voluminous dimensions, massive limestone fireplace and soaring coffered ceiling, the space has a warm cozy feel, an atmosphere achieved with rich burgundy wallcoverings, plenty of comfy seating, wide-plank Brazilian cherry flooring and a writing desk and drum table from Maitland-Smith. Open to the hearth room, the kitchen showcases vast expanses of custom Downsview cabinetry, traditionally styled and finished in a glazed buttercream tone. for quick snacks. Integrated Sub-Zero and Viking appliances emphasize the streamlined, uncluttered look, and a built-in Miele coffeemaker complies with the owner’s preference for “nothing on the counters.” The adjacent breakfast area overlooks the outdoor entertainment/pool complex, and casual meals are served on a white marble table – the first piece ever purchased by the owners. A full wet bar with Black Galaxy granite countertops links the family spaces with the light-filled, two-story great room, where the sophisticated gold-and-silver color scheme was inspired by renowned jeweler David Yurman. The deep gold, hand-painted faux wall treatment
continues into the ceiling coffers, and a soft metallic sheen adds interest to the upholstery of the sofa and diamond-patterned side chairs. Among the wife’s many intriguing “finds,” an accent table at one end of the sofa is draped in gold leather. Flanked by large signed Chagall prints, the imposing fireplace is finished in black with bronze accents, and a massive mirror extends to the ceiling. In striking counterpoint, the opposing wall is blanketed with an array of traditional oil paintings, and a Maitland-Smith breakfront displays a collection of Kentucky Derby glasses dating back to the 1940s. accented in cocoa, and silk moiré walls create an elegant setting for the formal dining room. The owners’ second acquisition as a young couple, all of the major pieces are Henredon, including the buffet, inlaid dining table which seats 10 and the china cabinet set in a specially built alcove. Contemporary urns perched on black granite pedestals and a mixture of antique and contemporary glassware further illustrate the wife’s knack for combining period styles. The third “priority” space, the lavish main-floor master retreat occupies a full wing of the home. Hummus-toned walls establish a

serene background for the gold silk balloon drapes and valances; Maitland-Smith bed, commode table and chest; antique French prints; and Fine Arts chandelier and sconces. The surprising twist comes when the owner clicks a remote, transforming the gilt-framed, two-way mirror above the fireplace to a large-screen TV! Spacious his-and-her closets flank the barrel-vaulted hall to the master bath, which revolves around a columned, step-up Roman tub that backs to a huge walk-through glass shower enclosure. The cream, white and gold French provincial décor is the wife’s tribute to a fondly

remembered stay in the Paris Ritz-Carlton. “I wanted to feel like I was in the Ritz-Carlton every day of my life,” she says with a smile. On the home’s upper level, the secondary bedrooms are all en suite and more evidence of her aesthetic flair, particularly in the striking black, white and silver palette of the bedroom depicted. The black leather Ralph Lauren sleigh bed is complemented by a candy-apple green settee, 1960s-vintage stainless floor lamp, contemporary acrylic ceiling fan and the bold-yet-traditional pattern of the custom bedding and window treatments.
Beyond its sheer beauty, what makes this residence so extraordinary is the astonishing amount of time, care and creativity that has been devoted to every detail. Refined yet comfortable, the owner’s tasteful synthesis of long-cherished furnishings and artwork with au-courant styling is a dazzling salute to her family’s individuality. Designing their garden to complement the Old World style of their home, these Webster Groves homeowners make a new garden look old. By Lucyann Boston Photography by Kim Dillon
When Jen and Cap Grossman designed and built their new home in an established neighborhood in Webster Groves, they knew the look they wanted. “The architecture has a French Country/Old World feel to it, but there’s a little bit of Tuscan feeling too,” Jen explains. As they began planning their interiors, they also considered the home’s exterior surroundings and the two-acre lot that needed a total overhaul if the house and grounds were to complement each other. Very early in the project, they turned to Kim Kelce and Nancy Pedley, who for 22 years as the firm of Kelce & Pedley, have specialized in fine residential garden design. “We were incredibly lucky to be involved with the project, which is
just around the corner from where I live,” says Nancy. “We went through a lot of designs and schemes, and we consulted with a landscape architect because there were severe grade changes in the yard. We needed to deal with that in the best way possible.” Another issue involved drainage and water that during construction flowed into neighboring yards. Solving those problems involved some very unglamorous grading work and the installation of an underground water storage tank now camouflaged by lovely white pines. Kelce & Pedley turned to Meyer Landscaping and Charles Stevenson for the earth moving and the truly heavy lifting on the project. Those efforts transformed necessary STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM AUGUST 2013

retaining walls into a series of beautiful terraces framed by stacked walls of creamy EW Gold limestone quarried in Ste. Genevieve, MO. Meyer Landscaping also amended and prepared the soil to provide the best possible medium for the trees and shrubs that were to come. All parties also worked to protect mature trees on the property during construction. As for prettying up the hardscape with plants, Jen had some guidelines for Nancy and Kim. She wanted the Old World look of the house to be reflected in the plants themselves, and “I wanted the garden to be as low maintenance as possible because we do a lot of traveling,” she emphasizes. “I wanted lavender somewhere in the landscaping and muted colors; not a lot of brights.” Making a new garden look old and at the same time be low maintenance was a challenge the team of Kelce & Pedley accepted. They drew on their experience gained in personally viewing true Old World gardens in France
and Italy. They also drew on their contacts to procure mature plants that did not require several years to grow into their role, even working with a plant broker to obtain the best available specimens. One of their biggest finds was a group of mature "green giant" arborvitae to screen the swimming pool on the east side of the house and provide privacy year around. They also made use of large numbers of boxwoods and hollies for rich green color 12 months a year. In keeping with country gardens in France and Italy, which make liberal use of gravel pathways, garden walks were constructed using decomposed granite, produced by Kafka Granite of Stratford, WI, a substance that packs well for a firm surface but still allows water to penetrate. Along with the evergreen shrubs, Kelce & Pedley added shrub roses and numerous hydrangeas to the terraces leading down to the pool. “The whole idea was to create an elegant but casual setting,” Nancy explains. Right: A French wire planter brimming with begonias and kalanchoe bring the garden into the upper terrace dining area. Opposite page: A vintage finished, concrete-topped table fills the smaller dining terrace off of the kitchen.
“We also wanted to make sure the shrubs on the terraces didn’t get too big. We chose ‘little lime’ hydrangeas rather than the larger ‘limelight’ and smaller (flower) carpet roses rather than larger varieties." All areas off the back of the house encompass lovely views of the two-acre property, accented with mature trees and grass. A shady center island planted with dogwoods, azaleas, hydrangeas, hosta and edged in sunny spots with peonies, draws the eye through the grounds. Whenever possible, the designers used old wood in place of new. Recycled timbers from a barn in Virginia top a wisteria-covered pergola off the kitchen. Also noteworthy in the pergola is a vintage-finished concrete table from Exceptional Outdoor Furnishings with a copper trough down the middle that can hold flowers or iced champagne. It is the Grossmans' dining spot of choice for a small dinner party. In addition to the small dining area off the kitchen, recycled wood
42
from a tobacco barn in Kentucky frames a large entertainment space off the dining room and living room. A glass-topped dining table, comfortable outdoor couches and chairs and a huge stone fireplace provide plenty of space for guests. Flower-filled stone containers and a trough-like provincial fountain accent a large courtyard immediately adjacent to the covered area. “I wanted most of the flowers in pots that can be watered several times a week,” Jen notes. A hallmark of all the outdoor entertaining spaces is the amazing number of candle-filled chandeliers and lanterns that after dark come alive with softly flickering light. “We’re still working out the best places to entertain when we have groups over,” Jen says. “The adults seem to favor the upper terrace while our ninth grade son’s friends head for the pool.” See

By now most of us are sick of the sticky, humid summer heat, especially plants and flowers. If your landscape is baking in the sun, consider adding plants and flowers that are heat and drought tolerant. Local landscapers share their top picks. By Melissa Mauzy
'Ascot Rainbow' Euphorbia
Helleborus Ivory Prince
Lantana
“When you really need to pull out all the stops — phenomenal foliage and flowers that demand all eyes — your choice must be 'Ascot Rainbow' Euphorbia. Highly ornamental gray leaves have a striking yellow edge. Clusters of flowers with variegated cream, lime and red appear in spring and last well into fall. In the cooler months, the foliage at the ends of the stems becomes flushed with shades of red, pink and orange. The Euphorbia is fantastic in containers or where high impact color is needed and grows 20" wide and tall.” Ann Lapides, Sugar Creek Gardens.
“Helleborus Ivory Prince is a shade-loving perennial, deer resistant and also prefers to be somewhat on the dry side in between waterings.” David Sherwood, Sherwood Forest.
“Even though we treat Lantana as an annual here in the St. Louis area, I can't think of a better attention getter that loves the sun more. Lantana is great for patio containers or massed for color in sunny annual beds. Hummingbirds and butterflies will flock to the eye-catching bloom. The Lantana is a must for most of my clients.” Jason Todd, Landscape St. Louis.
May Night Salvia
Pink Velour
Calgary Carpet Junipers
“In general, stick to natives for the best chance of surviving an area's typical heat/water patterns. Specifically, in this case, the May Night Salvia is tried and true. It is a nice, long blooming purple perennial that can take the heat.” Eric Ringhofer, Green Guys. Photo courtesy of Missouri Botanical Garden PlantFinder John Smelser.
“Pink Velour is one of our favorite crapemyrtle. It has wonderful crimson buds that open to burgundy-wine foliage that turns purple-green to green at maturity before giving way to bright pink blooms from July to September. Pink Velour also features great fall color.” Daniel Mee, Frisella Nursery.
“Calgary Carpet Junipers, as a drought tolerant planting, are a great low-growing evergreen for that low look that fronts other deciduous or even other taller evergreen plants. They are a great plant for those out of the way areas where watering or irrigation is not always available such as subdivision cul-de-sacs, hillsides, etc.” Bob Graeler, Chesterfield Valley Nursery.

Pop to the Pub
A Chesterfield lower level recreates the look and feel of a Soulard classic

Catching up over a pint, a game of darts, enjoying a nibble in a casual, cozy atmosphere—who doesn’t love an evening at the pub? For one Chesterfield family, there’s no need to leave home for a such a night; Tom and Laura Polcyn need only head to their lower level, where brick arches, a dark wood bar and built-in banquettes around a fireplace evoke the look and feel of Soulard’s classic McGurk’s Irish Pub. That’s no accident, although it took an extensive renovation to get This striking to horizontal arrangement there.page: “We’dAwanted do the basement for years,” Laura explains. “But featuring dried pomegranates, branches and we couldn’t agree on what to do. designer Jonathan Carson of Kitchen Liberty. It was when they tried to explain their vision for the space that the pub concept popped up. “My husband wanted a bar, and he was adamant that it would not be just a counter; he wanted to tie it into the ceiling,” Laura says. “When we were trying to relay this concept, Tom mentioned McGurk’s, and John and Jonathan ran with it, and what they came up with, we loved!” The design managed to create the cozy pub atmosphere Tom wanted while keeping the open feel that Laura was after—as well as address the space’s challenges. Large brick archways built by Pupillo creates long sight lines for an open feel while simultaneously separating sections of the lower level into distinct areas: a wood-paneled seating area around the fireplace, the bar area and a home theater. A tiny bathroom was moved and enlarged, and a soothing neutral paint

color was used throughout to disguise differing ceiling heights. Adding a sense of age—a key visual component to a pub-like look—to a newer home was another carefully considered challenge. Details were the solution: The warm tones of the brick, richly colored but slightly faded fabrics and a dark Coca-Cola stain on the wood trim. “If you use hickory and use the right stain,” Jonathan explains, “you can get the look and feel of old-growth oak from 100 years ago.” A wood ceiling above the bar, carefully painted to add patina, mimics the old exposed subflooring found in lofts in century-old buildings. A custom-built trestle table designed by Jonathan adds a bit of Old English design to the seating area. While it might look old, the space boasts plenty of thoroughly modern amenities, including the bar’s two beverage centers, dishwasher and ice maker; a home gym; and a terraced home theater area that seats 13 – or 21, if you count the seats at the bar, whose back cabinets were custom-crafted in order to preserve the view of the screen. “Getting the details right just makes such a difference,” Jonathan says. “I enjoy doing those little elements, they let people immerse themselves in the experience.” See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

When bringing an inefficient kitchen up-to-date, it’s all about innovative thinking, clever space planning and attention to detail. By Jamie Siebrase Phtography by Anne Matheis Styling by Niche
Faced with the task of updating the charming but outdated kitchen in their century-old Georgian-style Central West End home, Greg and Kim Minana made some dramatic changes. Envisioning a welcoming space, the Minanas melded modern amenities with classic finishes to retain the allure of their 100-year-old home. “Contemporary décor wasn’t right,” says Kim. “But, the functionality is still contemporary.” Typical of an older home, there were lots of inefficiencies in the original kitchen: five doorways, a second anterior stairwell, a butler’s pantry and lots of closets. “Once we got going, we began looking at the project on a larger scale,” Greg recalls. Contractor Mark Kohnen of Kohnen Craftsmanship brought the kitchen from its original 8-by-10 measurements to about 28-by-20 including the eat-in bar. What’s more, he flawlessly removed the back staircase, dropped the front one and added custom mahogany trim. Brazilian cherry hardwood, with its complex array of shades and texture, replaced the original gray speckled laminate flooring. This soft wood adds warmth, and its forgivable nature makes it easier to maintain
52
than tile, which must be re-grouted regularly. “If the hardwood gets a dent that adds to the character,” Greg says. When it comes to functionality, the devil’s in the detail. A Dacor dual range stove in sleek stainless steel blends nicely with standard cherry cabinetry. No, you aren’t seeing double. There are two stainless Sharp drawer microwaves and two Fisher & Paykel drawer dishwashers for this family of six. Opposite the range, a built-in cherry fridge and onyx sink counterbalance the metal. So does the sandwich bar, located next to the sink and counter, which is constructed of three giant slabs of locally-sourced granite. For interest, Kim incorporated stained-glass pendants over the antique-inspired Z Gallerie table. Today, the kitchen is a gathering place where kids congregate and the family watches important Cardinals games. “We’ve even had Thanksgiving here,” says Kim, who wouldn’t change a thing about the room. Spain Sparkles in Summer As the family’s first winemaker, Don Jose Oriol Domenech Vidal of Vallformosa, is an expert in Spanish Cava. BY Lorraine Raguseo Photography courtesy of Quintessential Wines and Masia Vallformosa
When the temperatures soar into the 90s (or higher) and St. Louis’ humidity makes a hot day even more oppressive, a glass of cold, refreshing sparkling wine really helps a body cool down. The sparklers that are having a breakout moment this summer come from a country that knows all about hot weather – Spanish Cavas. The Spanish have been making sparkling wine for centuries, largely from the Penedes region, which is west of Barcelona, in Northern Spain. Brut Cavas are made with native Spanish white grapes with such distinctive names as Macabeo, Xarel-lo or Parallada, while the Roses usually come from the better known Pinot Noir, Garnacha and Monastrell red grape varieties. The Domenech family has long been associated with the region and its wines, with references to the family appearing in local history as far back as the 10th Century. Don Francisco Jose Domenech planted vines on land in 1865, which became the basis for the family’s holdings. Through many trials and tribulations over the centuries, including
56
the Phylloxera epidemic when insects wiped out most of Spain’s and Europe’s vineyards in the 1880s, and the Spanish Civil War in the late 1930s when Masia Vallformosa, as the winery is called, was partially destroyed, the Domenech family has persevered. It was at the end of the Civil War, around 1940, when the Domenech family returned to The Masia that Don Jose Domenech Torne (the son of Don Francisco) produced the first three bottles of Vallformosa Cava. Today, the fifth generation of the Domenech family presides over Vallformosa, led by the charismatic, multi-talented Don Jose Oriol Domenech Vidal, grandson of Don Jose. Oriol, as he is known, is the family’s first accredited winemaker and considered one of the foremost experts on Spanish Cava production, having written a number of tracts, magazine articles and books on the subject. Additionally, Oriol is a gourmet chef, known for his special touch with traditional Spanish fare like Paella, the hearty seafood stew over rice that Oriol ladens with various shellfish. He sautes the onions in pure

Spanish olive oil, garlic and parsley, then he adds saffron threads, fish stock, calamari, green and red peppers and finally tomato sauce, more saffron and the rest of the seafood (shrimp, prawns, mussels, scallops). All of this simmers over an open fire in a traditional Spanish grill house. Aside from the ingredients, the unique taste of his paella comes from the sweet smoke of the grape vine branches Oriol uses to make the fire. When he adds the Catalan regional dishes of Xato Salad (filled with salt-based ingredients like fresh anchovies, olives, tuna and dried cod over escarole greens, and finished with a spicy, garlicky tomato-based sauce), the famous Pan Con Tomate (toasted bread rubbed with fresh garlic and ripe tomato, then drizzled with olive oil and a bit of salt and topped with a slice of Spain’s sublime Serrano or Iberico hams – both of which are now available in gourmet stores in the U.S.), and a flute of ice-cold cava like the Vallformsa Clasic Brut, Oriol has created a perfect summer repast that tastes equally delicious in his picturesque Catalan back yard – and in yours! See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

Toledo Metro Art Station, Naples, Italy Courtesy of Bisazza, photgraphy by Andrea resmini
Located approximately 164 feet below the Via Toledo, one of Naples main shopping streets, the Toledo Metro Art station in Naples is one of the most stunning public transportation stations in the world. As part of a larger ongoing project to have architects, designers and artists contribute to station design, Spanish architect Oscar Tusquets Blanca designed the Toledo station with the theme of water and light. Part of the station extends below sea level inspiring the water theme. Varying blue vitreous mosaic tiles create the feeling of being under water. Softly illuminated by lighting, the sea’s waves move subtly as the traveler walks along the gallery. Robert Wilson, a U.S. artist, contributed his Light Panels to the project.

Standing 82 stories into the Chicago skyline, the Aqua Tower is a unique, mixed-use high-rise. Designed by Studio Gang Architects, Aqua Tower’s outdoor terraces differ in shape from floor to floor. While each varies in size, the spectacular view provides a strong connection to the outdoors

and the city. Inspired by Lake Michigan and the Chicago River, the undulating terraces appear as if water is running down the building’s face. The curves don’t just give the space a visual appeal; they also help shade the glass and protect the building from the force of wind.

St. Louis Public Library, St. Louis, MO Photography by Timothy Hursley Photography
The St. Louis Public Library closed its doors in 2010 for a two-year restoration and renewal of the historic 1912 Cass Gilbert-designed building lead by Cannon Design. The transformative project increases public access, modernizes the library for the 21st century and enhances the building's stature as a cultural treasure. The North Wing truly ushers in the 21st century with the removal of old book stacks and the insertion of a newly constructed "building
within the building." A three-story multistory public atrium creates an accessible and welcoming entry, with new public spaces that include a 250-seat theater and teen rooms. In total, the project has created more than 40,000 sf of new public space in the library. The building's Great Hall and four public wings are restored and revitalized to their turn-of-the-century splendor.
