I hope you made it to KDR when the Thayer Coggin Road Tour came through St. Louis in July. Here I am in their Feelin' Groovy swivel chair from 1967. Behind me is a photo of Thayer Coggin's modern design revolutionary Milo Baughman.

nbeknownst to Milo Baughman, Jr. many of his peers thought him to be an avant-garde icon. Today, 60 years later, his design sensibility is considered classic and one that many tried to emulate. Milo’s creations from his first design for Thayer Coggin at age 29 to his last at 79 were sheer genius in style and comfort and very innovative at the time. While our goal is to always bring you innovative and cutting edge design, we go a step further this issue to include a little avant-garde inspiration that could also be described as a bit ahead of the times or outside the box. Durable, comfortable and most importantly fashionable, Gersemi is changing the way women look at equestrian clothing. With twice yearly collections (a spring/summer collection driven by the sport and an autumn/winter collection that is more serious and functional), Maricela Alexandersson, along with her husband Jan, are combining quality fabrics with a luxurious feel to create a beautiful line of clothing for every woman. SLHL: How did Gersemi come about, and what has your involvement been? Maricela: My husband Jan Alexandersson started the company over 30 years ago as an equestrian wholesale company. After 10 years, he decided to focus only on equestrian apparel with a brand he built known as Kyra K. In 2009, he decided to launch a new brand, Gersemi, with its heritage from Scandinavian mythology. Gersemi represents beauty and treasure. I got involved in the design process in 2010, and I completely took over the designing for Gersemi with the Spring 2011 collection. SLHL: While your clothes are geared towards equestrians, can your pieces be worn by anyone? Maricela: Yes! I brought a completely different approach to what Gersemi had been offering in the past. The brand has crossed over more into fashion. I see equestrian clothes as something that can easily be worn outside the barn. I wanted the Gersemi girl to feel fashionable as well as comfortable in her clothes.

SLHL: What makes your line unique to other leisurewear lines? Maricela: The large array of detail that goes in to the designing of the brand is palpable when our customers spend almost as much time admiring the inside of the garments as they do the outside. To me, that is a true measure of our success. From the velvet ribbon applied to our neck seams, to the luxurious lining fabrics, the soft lining on pockets and the cell phone pockets on most of our jackets, these are all details that I feel are neglected in today’s mass produced fashion. SLHL: How do you mix fashion with functionality? Maricela: My husband’s expertise in how fabric performance affects the purpose of the garment with my need for luxurious feeling fabrics creates a line of clothing that is not only fashionable, but also performs in the harshest of weather conditions. When we label an item waterproof, it means that each seam is carefully taped on the inside to prevent leakage through the seams. For us, it is important that the clothes we put on the market are not only fashionable, but also durable, comfortable, functional and with great ease of care. All of our products are machine washable. SLHL: What is new in your autumn/winter collection for 2013? Maricela: Our autumn/winter collection is currently in stores. You will find an Old English-inspired line with gorgeous plaid fabrics that mix beautifully with tweeds in muted tones of moss, Bordeaux, blue stone and graphite. Imagine steam engines in an old English train station. One of my favorite pieces is the Isabella double-breasted long coat. It has oversized buttons and faux leather trim throughout. The backside is very unique in that it has three separate panels. Two of them come together at the center with a third one right at the center allowing for maximum ease of movement. Everyone wants to be clean, but what soap should you choose? The answer doesn't matter at Herbaria, because all their handmade soaps are people friendly. Customers hop from one bar to another, to try out all the wonderful herbal scents. The Herbaria soapmakers leave out the artificial fragrances, colors and harsh detergents, and instead include nourishing natural oils and healing herbal essential oils to produce soaps beneficial to the skin. The company has its origins in 2002, when Ken Gilberg's wife, LaRee DeFreece, didn't like the soaps that were available in stores, with labels listing unpronounceable artificial ingredients. Taking action, she bought some books, experimented and learned to make her own soap. She gave away extras to friends, who loved the bars. Encouraged, she made more, and sold her soaps at the annual Best of Missouri Market. Soon after, she started a new job, so Ken took over making the soap in the basement of their Kirkwood home. With lively online sales, Herbaria expanded at a fast pace. They now ship to every state and a number

of foreign countries. In 2009, they moved to a storefront on The Hill, at 2016 Marconi Ave. Herbaria offers a dazzling array of over 50 soaps, as well as beauty masks, scrubs and moisturizers, bath bombs and salts, natural insect repellents, laundry and shaving soaps, pet products and even deodorant. For those who have a hard time deciding, they sell sampler stacks, which include six different scented soaps. For Ken, the most important part of the business is using natural ingredients. “We're all about the plants. We use the real thing, and your body knows it. Artificial fragrance oils are the number one cause of skin irritation,” he notes. “So many people have eczema, or are allergic to synthetic chemicals.” He researches the properties of each plant before using it as an ingredient, to make sure it is beneficial to the skin, and comes up with some creative blends. Tomato Surprise soap includes dried tomato because the lycopene in tomato is a powerful antioxidant. Spearmint Orange is a natural tension relaxer due to the menthol

contained in the spearmint; an added benefit is that it helps open the sinuses. Pink Grapefruit includes the skin-toning benefits of real grapefruit. Their best-selling soap, Lavender Oatmeal, is prized not only for its wonderful scent, but also for its antibacterial and exfoliating properties. Their website, www.herbariasoap.com, lists the ingredients in each bar so customers know exactly what they're getting. Customers often like to share their love of these natural soaps by giving them as gifts for special occasions, such as weddings and baby showers. To help them celebrate, Herbaria has developed special half-bars, along with custom labeling, For Ken, Herbaria has turned out to be the perfect job. “I love going to work every day,” he says with a smile. “It's the people you meet, and the people you work with, that make it worthwhile. ucked into a discreet, alley-like street in downtown St. Louis is one of the city's most exclusive eateries, Blood and Sand. This unassuming location is the perfect home for the only private restaurant in town. You don't need a secret password to get in, but you do need a membership. Blood and Sand is a testament to the saying, “Membership has its privileges.” Top among them being the culinary stylings of chef Chris Bork. Young and oh-so hip, his creative and memorable dishes make him a chef whose star is on the rise. About his cooking style, he says, “That is a question I get asked all the time, and I always have trouble giving a straight answer. I'm French trained, I’m from the south, I love using Asian ingredients, etc. But I guess what's most important is cooking seasonally. Using ingredients that are local and in season. When they go out of season, we move to the next thing.” Utilizing fresh, seasonal ingredients is key to creating an exciting menu that is constantly evolving. This month you'll see locally grown apples, Brussels sprouts, cauliﬂower, celery root, garlic, grapes, melons, parsnips, pears, squash and turnips worked seamlessly into everything from beautifully constructed salads to hearty entrees to delicate desserts. Though Bork excels at highly concepted cuisine, its not the only thing coming out of his kitchen. “We try to have a balance of food that is approachable and food that might be considered a little different to

some,” says Bork. “We are a members' club, and I have to be very conscious of that. Sometimes our members just want a cheeseburger or they want to try something new and creative. We try to offer both of those things.” Though the restaurant is private, the food is within reach. Grilled Lamb with Rhubarb Gremolata and Ricotta

b© Chef Chris Bork of Blood and Sand will demonstrate these three dishes. A taste of the cooking school Menu  Chilled english peas with buttermilk granita, mint and chamomile: "We don't have a salad section on the Blood and Sand menu," says Bork, "So in order to fill that void, we do cold vegetable dishes." This innovative combination is a play on the classic pairing of peas and mint, given a twist with the addition of chamomile. "I wanted to experiment with a frozen dressing, so I made the buttermilk granita," says Bork. He found that by itself, it was too tart, so he added coconut to tame the tartness and found that the mint and chamomile in the peas also helped with this effort. The melange of flavors leads to a rich yet fresh dish.  Grilled lamb with rhubarb gremolata and ricotta: Thinly sliced layers of lamb heart are grilled and served with the classic pairing of gremolata. Bork makes this gremolata with rhubarb, however, and includes ricotta made with plenty of lemon juice, both accompaniments providing acidity to cut the richness of the lamb. "Lamb heart has a very intense lamb flavor," says Bork. "But don't think I mean gamey. High-quality lamb is not gamey, but rather beautiful and full-flavored."  Roasted beets with raw milk yogurt, dark chocolate, bacon fat, popcorn and vanilla bean-citrus vinaigrette: Beets and chocolate are a classic dessert combo. Think red velvet cake. Bork creates a modern take on the marriage by roasting beets to sweet perfection, and then adding creamy yogurt and crunchy popcorn to the mix for a textural delight. You are sitting in a glistening stainless steel and white-tiled kitchen, watching a Portuguese woman in what could best be described as 19th Century kitchen garb, including a white linen cap that is the much more stylish precursor to the kitchen hair net, stirring a black cauldron over an open flame in the nearly floor-to-ceiling burnished red brick fireplace that takes up an entire wall. In that antique pot is Caldo Verde, the traditional potato-based soup, filled with cabbage, onions and Linguica (Portuguese dried sausage), made exactly the same way it has been for centuries in the Douro Valley, the famous, picturesque wine region an hour’s drive east of the city of Oporto. From the kitchen’s many large windows, you can see steeply terraced vineyards rising up from the Douro River’s banks to the high hills on both sides of it. This is the view that Joao Ferreira Ribeiro Alvares and his family (the sixth and seventh generation of the Ferreira family) enjoy while dining on one of the terraces at Quinta do Vallado, the most historic wine property in this area, which was the first demarcated wine region in the world. It is the same magnificent view of the river and surrounding hills that his most famous relative, Dona Antonia Adelaide Ferreira, saw for most of the 85 years she lived in the vast, burnt-orange stucco and stone “great house” that still stands nestled in the hillside. It serves as both a guest house and the site of Ferreira family dinners, meetings and other significant events. Widowed at the age of 33 in the mid-1800s, she was the first woman to helm a wine company in Portugal, and possibly the world. While the Douro Valley is known as the birthplace of sweet (Port) wines, Joao and his two cousins, winery manager Francisco Ferreira and winemaker Francisco Olazabal, have become trailblazers, much like their famous ancestress and the original Ferreiras, who first planted grapes there in the early 1700s, by producing dry red and white wines that are excellent accompaniments to the menus their chef prepares. A traditional

Portuguese red blend like Quinta do Vallado’s Douro Red – a premium, yet affordable, five-grape wine that is typical of the hearty, yet smooth, dry wines the region produces – works well with the pork, onions and spices that show off the meatiness of the clams. Desserts include eggs in some amazing preparations, from Pasteis de Nata (egg custard tarts) to “Spun” egg pastries, or sweet fruit creations, like “Laminated Oranges” with Port wine a key ingredient. Joao serves this dessert with the modern winery’s first Vintage Port, fittingly named “Adelaide” – in honor of the “Doyen of the Douro” as Dona Antonia Adelaide Ferreira was known. Soup – CALDO VERDE

Ingredients: O 2 1/4 c Couve Galega (Galician Cabbage); O 2 c of potatoes; O 1 onion; O 1 tbsp of salt O 3/4 c olive oil; O 1 chouriço or dry meat sausage; Preparation: Boil a pan with water and salt. Add the peeled potatoes and chopped onion. Once cooked, blend the potatoes and onions and simmer for 5 mins. Cut the cabbage as thin as possible with a knife, and add to the pot. Boil for 2 or 3 min. add the olive oil. On a side Pan, boil the chouriço or sausage only with salt. Cut the Couriço or Sausage into thin slices and add to the Caldo Verde before you serve. After years of living in the Bankers Lofts downtown, Brad Fratello and Doug Moore sought out a new home that would allow them to step out their back door and enjoy a pool and patio, something they were missing with loft living. They began their search with two things in mind… remaining in the city and having a pool to enjoy the colors and sounds of the water. Searching high and low, they explored countless options before narrowing in on the Grove, a growing and vibrant neighborhood in Forest Park southeast that is easily walkable. Unusual in shape and size, two abandon trapezoid-shaped lots slightly wider than normal were the perfect location for their future contemporary home. With the initial idea to build a pre-fabricated home on the lot, Brad and Doug met with Brent Crittendon and Sarah Gibson of UIC (Urban Improvement Company) before making any final decisions. “Brent and Sarah presented their own ideas, and they were able to offer us something way better than we could have imagined,” Brad says. Centered on a private courtyard and a close indoor/outdoor relationship, UIC’s design highlighted Brad and Doug’s desire for a pool while maintaining privacy. The home was custom built to fit the lot. The garage is tipped at an angle and the pool and patio mirror the trapezoid shape of the lot. With no alley behind the lots, an old factory wall -- a feature Brad and Doug love -- closes off the space. “Our goal was to have the home have a St. Louis feel,” says Doug. “The factory wall screams St. Louis.” Incorporating the factory wall into their space played a major role in interior as well as exterior material selections. Brad, Doug and the UIC team took careful consideration to ensure the home fit with the surroundings of the neighborhood. “We wanted our home to feel contextual to the neighborhood, and we achieved this by using the same frontage as well as keeping our home the same height as other homes in the neighborhood,” Doug explains. Drawing on colors from buildings on each side, the home’s design reflects its surroundings. Lighter-toned bricks correspond with the homes to the east, while darker colors are matched to the buildings to the west. Additionally, a recessed entryway masks the drive-through courtyard to the home’s garage. “The pass through to the garage was the biggest creative solution to make the home fit into the neighborhood,”

says Brent. “The recessed entry helps to respect the neighboring property lines.” Opening the garage door and driving through the entryway, you are immediately enveloped in the outdoor space. “Our idea was to create an outdoor area as a room in itself,” Brad says. A wooden canopy connected to the home aids in the transition from indoor to outdoor. The trapezoid-shaped pool is framed by concrete cinder blocks filled with sedums and succulents that will continue to fill in and grow. All of the main rooms of the home face into the private courtyard, providing a picturesque view from any place in the house. Transitioning from outdoors to indoors at Brad and Doug’s is a breeze with the addition of a garage door that opens from the living

room to the outdoor space. When the door is pulled up, it completely disappears. “When we open the door it increases the square footage of our home,” Doug explains. “We built our home around the indoor/ outdoor concept.” The metal frame of the garage ties in with the industrial elements of the outdoor space. Highly polished poured concrete floors further exemplify the industrial look Brad and Doug desired. To keep the living room from feeling too cold, a stain on the floor warms the space, as well as a brightly patterned traditional area rug. Sitting on the seafoam blue couch, the homeowners as well as guests face directly to the outdoor area. Chosen to reflect the blue hues of the pool, the couch is topped by dual abstract paintings by local artist Peter Manion III.

A deep blue accent wall frames the master bedroom. The only wall in the home not competing with other spaces, the accent wall's bold color choice reflects the blues of the home's pool, which is visible from the master bedroom.

Laid out in a loft-like fashion, Brad and Doug’s home is open and airy. There is only one door on the main level, which leads to the powder room. “Doors seem like barriers to design and living,” Brad says. “They block out light and flow.” Directly off the living room, a hallway filled with cheerful artwork by local artists Mark Weber and Jeff Kapfer lead to the serene master bedroom. Each morning, Brad and Doug wake to the soothing sounds of water and the beautiful colors reflecting off the water from the pool. Two Edison bulb bedside lamps bring a touch of industrial into the space. For a punch of color, two canvas paintings by Julie Malone frame the wall above the bed. For additional color, a deep blue accent wall stands out to the otherwise neutral walls. Most of the home’s walls are

kept neutral due to the open feel, but the bedroom wall was the only room on the main level that did not have to respond to other spaces, so Brad and Doug thought why not go for the bold color. Heading back in to the main living area, a kitchen just a step up from the living room is laid out in a similar fashion to their previous home. Dark cabinetry is accented with stainless steel hardware and fixtures. Brad and Doug decided on dark cabinetry and the dark bamboo flooring in the space because of all of the windows in the surrounding rooms, which provide plenty of natural light. The poured concrete sink countertop incorporates the industrial look found throughout the indoor and outdoor spaces. An architecturally detailed bookshelf built specifically for the space further divides the rooms without closing it in. “We wanted the materials we used in the home to almost disappear to ensure the open feeling we desired,” Doug says. The most striking piece in the dining room is the eclectic bookshelf from Hammer & Hand Imports. Made from an old door in Calcutta, the

piece brings a unique touch to the space. Lighting in the dining room, as well as the entire home, was chosen not to distract from the space. Letting their love of natural light and contemporary design guide them, Brad and Doug’s home is an eclectic mix of furnishings and artwork that reflect their personalities and travels. a Town & Country couple set out to build their third custom home just over two years ago, they found that pictures were indeed worth 1,000 words – and the key to streamlining their vision into a picture-perfect reality in just 13 months. Such a timeline is rare for a process as large and involved as building a home from the ground up, one that can be overwhelming and fraught with delays. It helped, of course, that the couple was clear about their big picture. “Our old house was very traditional, and I didn’t want that any more,” says the homeowner. “I wanted something where, if you

chipped the paint, it didn’t matter.” With that philosophy as her foundation, she turned to visuals to flesh out her vision. “I got all my ideas from magazines. I gave the architect and the contractors the pictures, and they figured out how to build it.” Designed by William Cover of William D. Cover Architects and built by Bozich Construction, the result is a one-of-a-kind 11,430-square-foot home that eschews polished marble and high-gloss trim in favor of matte stone and dark-stained wood to create a warm, rustic space. Almost every room in the house is topped with a notable treatment, such as the foyer/great room’s spectacular vaulted cathedral ceiling (opposite page) and the dining room’s inventive curved box beams, suspended below the flat ceiling (above).

23-foot-high cathedral ceiling, and the use of stone by Caswell Brickwork as well as faux-painted on the walls of the dining room, master bath and bar area evoke the look and feel of a medieval castle—albeit one outfitted with elements for a comfortable modern life, like the temperature-controlled wine cellar built behind the dining room fireplace and the custom kitchen island with dining space for five. Details only enhance the house’s unique character and rustic feel, while simultaneously adding interest and contrast. Hardwood floors feature planks of varying width, for example, and the bar’s granite countertop boasts a sueded finish. The polished surface of the kitchen counters brings out the soapstone’s striking striations and unusual

rough-hewn edges add texture. Arches throughout—above the kitchen range, the open fretwork design of the dining room ceiling beams, the barrel ceilings in the master bedroom and bath—add graceful counterpoints to the more rugged nature of the house’s building materials. The high-quality workmanship and level of detail make it even more remarkable that the house was completed in such seamless fashion, a feat builder Kenny LeMay chalks up to good communication and decisiveness on the part of the homeowners. “Here, the architect drew something, like the ceiling beams; we would provide several wood samples; and the homeowners made a decision quickly. It made things

go really smoothly,“ says LeMay. The contractors direct you very well; they were really easy to work with,” agrees the homeowner. “So there really weren’t any big challenges.” The homeowners were just as decisive when furnishing the new house, selecting dark wood and muted-color or neutral-toned pieces on a trip to Hemispheres in Dallas, the same journey that netted the 600-pound iron chandeliers in the great room. The Texas finds were rounded out with selections from local shops Ooh La La and Three

French Hens, while Mary Stevens of MKS oversaw window treatments and other finishing touches. Hunters in the family provided the elk and deer heads mounted in the bar and family room, lending personalized family history to the new space. Now the setting for relaxed family suppers and milestone birthday celebrations, the new house is rapidly gaining a history as unique as its Old World looks—all part of the homeowner’s big picture. A decade

old wonder

Creating a variety of garden vignettes, Chip and Muffy Matthews’ backyard oasis feeds the imagination. By Lucyann Boston Photography by Kim Dillon

St. Louis Homes & Lifestyles Garden of the Year. Although an honor, the words hardly do justice to Muffy and Chip's horticultural masterpiece. Those who have been lucky enough to stroll the couple’s two-acre, Olivette landscape might easily term it a garden for the decades or a wonder of the suburban world. While others marvel, to Muffy and Chip the garden has become the rhythm of their lives. In the 10 years it has graced their property, the splashes of the waterfalls, the flow of the streams, the reflection of the sun and the moon off the water, the power of the boulders and the peace and joy of the plants has woven its way into their hearts and minds. They listen to it, relish it and find peace in it. The garden encompasses a huge, lake-like swimming pool, both small and large waterfalls, a meandering stream, a cattail and-water lily-filled pond, multiple pathways leading through sun and shade gardens, a charming guest cottage complete with kitchen and bar area and a variety of landscaped patio spaces to simply sit, relax and absorb it all. “It is a garden of different vignettes,” Muffy explains in summation. The vignettes, in fact the entire landscape, are truly of the Matthews' making. Once a tennis court for their game-loving daughter Marka, the space suffered once she left for college. Muffy allowed it to languish for a year, mulling over whether it was time for a change and what the change would be. When she reached a decision, it was absolutely earthmoving. “I wanted an ocean,” she says with a laugh. “I wanted as much water as we could fit in the backyard.” It was a project, she freely admits, that had to be planned and designed in phases. “It was too much for my mind to encompass

at one time; it had to be phased in. We almost had to do everything backwards.” Rather than designing a pool and a waterfall and a guest house, then fitting a garden around it, the Matthews began with rocks. “I’m such a rock hound,” she admits. “I just love rocks.” The rest of us would term Muffy’s rocks boulders, and she has lovingly selected them herself. One of her favorites “Big Red,” appropriately named for its sheen, weighed in at 7,500 pounds. It now dominates one side of the salt water pool. Another boulder ripples with streaks of white. Still another bears spike-shaped vertical markings created by the metal rods pounded into the boulders to free them during the quarrying process. “When I picked it they said, ‘You don’t want that one; it has the

rod markings,’” she recalls. “I said, ‘Yes I do. It shows how it was quarried. It’s interesting. It tells a story.’” The rocks came first, Muffy explains, because the water had to balance the weight of the rocks to make the landscape fit seamlessly into the space. One of her favorite stories of the building of the garden was working with Free Form Pools on the size and shape of the pool. There was good news and bad news when working with the shape, she recounts. “The good news was that we finally had the shape right; the bad news was that we had to dig out an extra foot all the way around to make it big enough.” Chip’s design and engineering expertise came to the fore in the creation of the waterfall that splashes into the stream and pond

surrounding the guest house. The height and the amount and force of the water were all important to make the manmade structure appear natural. Throughout the project, Chip noted three goals that were all important to him. “I wanted the garden to look like God had put it here; I wanted it to look lush, and I wanted color throughout the growing season,” he says. The couple easily achieved those goals and have augmented them during the past 10 years. Muffy delights in adding small, whimsical ornaments to the garden, what she calls “little things placed here and there to make you smile.” A large wrought-iron ant crawls beside a garden pathway, a ceramic turtle suns itself on a stream-side rock; a whimsical frog appears ready to dive into the pool. “I don’t want things to be too obvious,” she says. “I want to create a series of surprises.” She has also fashioned the garden to be “happy and joyful” and at the same time “serene.” “We’ve tried to use shapes and varieties of plants that will allow people to use their imagination; to let their mind wander, pretend, dream and soar,” she explains. Not only do the Matthews relish the time they spend in their garden, they have been generous about sharing it with friends, charitable groups and allowing it to be on numerous garden tours. They’ve even added an extra set of brick steps from the upper terrace to the water features to provide additional access to the spots everyone wants to stroll. “I’m always being asked if I can host an event in the garden,” Muffy says. steps to prepare for a remodel What can a homeowner do to prepare for a remodel? NARI provides a top 10 list of steps homeowners should take before breaking ground on their next remodel.

» Research your project. Taking time to research projects on the Internet and NARI.org will provide a good sense of what is involved such as price, scope of work, return on investment and new product/ material options. Also, research property values in your neighborhood to make sure your project is in line with other homes in the area.

» Plan project around the long-term. How long do you plan to stay in your home? How might your family structure change over time? Life can change quickly—these questions should be answered early on to ensure your project will fit your lifestyle long after it’s complete.

» Set your budget. Deciding on a realistic budget and arranging finances to support your project are essential. This number needs to include everything—the project, products, contingencies, etc. Don’t be afraid to share this with your remodeler; professionals are respectful of a client’s budget and will create a plan around it, not over it.

» Use advanced search for professionals. The online world makes

It must take tremendous confidence to say to your builder, “surprise us!” But that’s exactly what this couple did when choosing Lorrien Homes to build out the lower level of their nine-year-old story-and-a-half in Chesterfield. Lorrien Homes’ Diana and Dana Dunbar are quick to point out that the overall project was very much a “collaborative effort” with the owners – with one exception. Their design/build assignment was to transform the unfinished, 1,500-square-foot basement into an entertainment center that would include a home theater, kitchen/bar area, fireside lounge, pool table room and ping pong/shuffleboard room. Left to Dana’s ingenuity, however, was the “surprise element” – a space that would be specifically created for the homeowners’ three young boys.

The Dunbars use Houzz.com, an online database for remodeling and design that has proved to be an extremely effective tool for helping the firm’s clients to explore their options, convey their ideas and ultimately record their final design selections. “We focus on communication with the client,” says Dana, adding that he is onsite daily to personally supervise the construction process. Dana’s first priority was to ensure that “the lower level would feel like it was part of the original home,” which has a clean, contemporary décor. Soft cool colors, archways trimmed with fluted columns and rosettes and vast expanses of blond maple plank flooring, cabinetry and paneling reflect the home’s established theme, and stainless steel inlays are a repeated motif throughout the entertainment area, linking

the various spaces. “Consistency of materials and design elements creates a more fluid space,” Dana explains. Varied ceiling heights are another of the builder’s favorite design techniques, in this case both functional and visually appealing. For example, the theater ceiling is dropped and coffered to create a more intimate “cinema” atmosphere. In the kitchen/bar, an octagonal tray added spatial volume while circumventing a problematic I-beam, and a simple tray ceiling provided necessary height in the ping pong room. Planning ahead, the theater’s 80-inch LCD screen allows extra space for installation of larger screens when they become available, and the owners’ reluctance to let their boys use this high-tech equipment for video gaming became the impetus for the “surprise element.”

Dana designed the youngsters’ space as a video room, cleverly hiding the entry behind a “secret” wall panel. Having worked with a company that did similar fiber optics for Disney, he also installed a “starry night” ceiling that the boys can operate with a remote control, much to their delight. Lorrien Homes takes great pride in construction timeliness, and the entire project took just 12 weeks from start to completion of construction. Forget everything

you thought you knew about retirement center aesthetic and that dull, one-room ubiquity the phrase conjures up. Taking cues from the avant-garde tradition of experimental design, local interior designer Holly Blumeyer of Holly Blumeyer Interior Design Group pushed the boundaries when she converted two adjacent rooms at the Mari de Villa Retirement Center into an unexpected suite brimming with custom design and a whole lot of class. “The place is darling,” says Blumeyer who, years ago, had custom designed a Clayton condo for her client. Assisted living was the next step, one Blumeyer happily assisted. You see, even at 90, some things – style and comfort – can’t be compromised. Drawing on European culture and urban dwelling

concepts, the designer concocted something “more like a pied-à-terre.” The retirement center was supportive as their philosophy is to make their residents feel they are living in their own homes. “The key,” says Blumeyer, “was to create several distinct living areas to provide a change in scenery for my client throughout the day.” The first living space was made into a sitting room suitable for taking meals or entertaining friends by adding a game table and comfortable chairs. Additionally, Blumeyer recovered a love seat with a classic Brunschwig & Fils leaf pattern, and the two chairs are in a Robert Allen fabric. “I used lots of fabric so things would be cozy,” she says. “We carried the color scheme throughout the suite, which is something you have

to do in small spaces. ” The basis for the color palette – raspberries, roses, grassy greens – was a discontinued Rose Cumming fabric Blumeyer had used in her client’s previous home. She got the last 10 yards of it and re-made window curtains, top treatments for the French doors and pillows with custom trim. To hide an additional door which opens to the outside hall, Blumeyer cleverly sheared silk across the wall behind the bed. In the bedroom space, the client’s favorite chair and ottoman as well as her antique desk are positioned near French doors leading to a charming lanai, which includes custom cushions and pillows made to coordinate with the her indoor furnishings. Holly repurposed three rugs that had been custom-made for her client’s former residence.

Geometric patterns add interest to the bedroom and sitting area; a floral rug in the dressing room, which connects the bedroom with the sitting area, brings everything together. To maintain her client’s most cherished possessions, Blumeyer filled a console with pictures. A custom painted bookcase holds esteemed literature, heirlooms and objet d’art. Prized artwork invigorates the suite. Collaborating with Jeff Day, of Jeff Day Architects, the team created a non-traditional residence for homeowner Sue Cejka, whose love for gardening was incorporated through a U-shaped design where each room has a spectacular view of her garden courtyard. “I love light and I am a gardener, so I wanted a home where every room was completely open to my garden,” Cejka explains. Floor-to-ceiling windows flank the U-shape of the rear of the home, allowing an ideal view into the colorfully planted courtyard as well as plenty of natural light to spill into the main living areas. A 10-foot wall extends across the back of the property for privacy, which was important to Cejka. For further privacy, the front of the home does not include any windows. To allow for natural light in the home without adding windows to the front, clerestory windows around the top perimeter provide all-day lighting from all four sides of the house in the primary living space. Architecturally, Jeff Day altered some of the homes initial plans in order to better achieve the look Cejka was after. “I pushed the garage from the rear of the property to the front yard,” Day explains. “This allowed me to make the well-landscaped rear yard a feature that all of the rooms could enjoy.” While architecturally innovative in design, the home is also forward thinking in the green aspects that were incorporated. Blue Brick first

approached Cejka with the idea to build an energy-efficient home by integrating green aspects into the build, an idea she agreed to. “Going green really changes a homeowners entire lifestyle,” says Brad Roell, owner of Blue Brick. “Being green is an epidemic that grows.” The team has built a super-efficient home, which recently received 31 out of 100 on the Home Energy Star rating system (HERS), which means it is 70% more efficient than other new homes. The lower the score, the more energy efficient the home is. Hollywood Glamour

A St. Louis designer indulges her powder room in Old Hollywood glam fit for The Blonde Bombshell.

Local designer Pamela Calvert has a knack for getting inside her client’s minds. “Once I understand what my client wants, I fine tune their look by giving it an ‘outside the box’ approach.” But when it comes to her own home, there is only one agenda she needs to follow—her own. Pamela describes her home's upper level as eclectic, with a mix of old and new. However, she allows more personality to show through her jazz-themed lower level. The Beatles and The Three Stooges are just some of the characters that bring life to her entertaining area. But camouflaged amongst three decorative niches is a hidden door, designed and built by her husband, which leads to the glamorous powder room with a mural that embodies Hollywood glam—Marilyn Monroe. Monroe is portrayed in life-size form behind the door, looking out at the stylish room overflowing with sophistication. The three other walls are covered in black slate tiles. The ceiling matches with granite tiles. When designing for a small space, the old rule of thumb is to shy away from dark colors, but Pamela chose to decorate purely in black, silver or white to allow specific elements to shine through. “By making everything black slate, I was able to make the floor the focal point,” Calvert said. The spiral floor motif, which covers the 5-foot-by-5-foot space, was done entirely with single mosaic tiles. At the core of the tiles sits a modern pedestal sink that draws on the spiral influences. Anchoring the mirror above the sink are two crystal chandeliers. Pamela has received nothing but positive responses from guests. “People come to my house just to see the bathroom,” Pamela expresses. “You can’t even tell it is a bathroom. Opened in September 2003, the Contemporary Art Museum is the premier museum in St. Louis for contemporary art. Celebrating its 10th anniversary this fall, the museum consists of non-collecting exhibitions, education and event space and is intended not to preserve, but provoke. The two-story, 27,000-square-foot museum emphasizes transparency at its ground level while providing open and flexible space for exhibitions and programs. Two

intersecting ribbons of concrete and stainless steel mesh that weave and overlap form the building. A series of interconnecting galleries are created by the lower walls, which alternately delineate the site boundaries and fold inwards.
