The intent here was to capture the volume and stance of the existing 917 to reinterpret for the future while keeping the essence.

The Design was purpose built for racing for the factory team and any customisation meant purpose built dies and custom fitment issues limiting body shape and aerodynamic variations

p r o g r e s s

The 1st phase of sketching was mostly about trying capture the volume and extrapolating it into something new

In the 2nd phase of sketching i tried to concentrate on details and resolving the design to take it further into photoshop

In this phase i tried to resolve the design mostly on side views for quicker results before moving onto perpspective views. I did many variations and tried lot of techniques to finally freeze something that i liked.

MINIMAL, FUNCTIONAL, and UTILITARIAN. The aim was to redesign the truck as a workhorse for the logistics and construction sector while making it socially acceptable and inviting for others on the roads. The vehicle is positioned as a city truck with short regional trip

capability. Being confined to city limits permits the possibility of an all electric drive train which could be charged at loading and storage bays and overnight.

Air is directed from the air collector at the climbing board in the cabin through channels inside the load baywalls to create a air screen at the back to This deflects dust and debris from the load area and prevents from falling onto oncoming traffic The ergonomics of entry and exit have been taken care of with a novel door opening system in which the door slides down as well dispenses small climbing ledges stowed away in the door panel The cabin has an extendable flexible canopy to accomodate more occupants when the truck is being used for other diverse purposes. The load carrier is a modular with elements whic can be removed to juggle between the extendable cabin space and load carry-

MODEL MAKING DIGITAL / PHYSICAL

In this phase i tried to resolve the design further and build a CAD Model in ALIAS followed by a physical model made in MDF. The pphysical model was not milled instead it was made by building in sections and the hand sanding which presented several challengesto achieve radiuses and profiles.

INTERIOR MOTIVES 2014 SHORTLIST

B E YO N D AUTONOMOUS DURATION : 8 WEEKS

BEYOND AUTONOMOUS

A journey into the ways of nature and natural systems. TESLA builds a Vehicle that revolves around this philosophy and breaks away from tradition completely. Life Can be broken down to a Pneumatic Structure. The Moment when a single cell multiplies into 2 cells exemplifies it in the best way possible. The Single Pneumatic cover ( The CELL Membrane) stretches just like a baloon and then finally divides into two small pneumatic systems.

PNEU How do you create shape then with a pneumatic structure and get to the million forms life manifests itself in starting from tissues to organs to full bodied organisms.

By Creating hard points on the mebrane as directed by the nucleus the membrane manifests numerous shapes

The Protein Hole in the cell membrane facilitates all exchanges between the environment and the cell and is formed at different points on the cell membrane when there is a need for material exchange.

The mebrane controls wheel movement and acts as a suspension and forms the tread pattern as well

As the user places the key the nuclei releases ions and forms the appropritate seating according to the information stored in the key. The ear piece gives information about critical size parameters about the user’s body to the nuclei according to which it modifies softness and rigidity of different parts of the membrane

The Tesla globe at the rear is coated with photosynthetic nano structure and is capable of hovering with the help of a stowed away extra robocoptor and harness solar energy when not in use

MEMBRANE

THE MEMBRANE SENSES THE OCCUPANTS VITAL BODY POINTS AND RECONFIGURES THE SHAPE ON THE FLY TO SUIT THE USER

The Central core beneath the membrane is the brain bhind the intelligent interior. The core controls the mebrane and even connects to the wheel system as well as forming a closed covering when needed for the user.

The mebrane takes the shape of the occupant and releases steering controls, harnesses and foot controls ( if the user wants to drive). The mebrane can accomodate infinite number of body shapes and sizes.

DIFFERENT DRIVINGMODES

The membrane passes into the wheels through the front module and then into the bio-coptor wheels. The mebrane controls suspension by limiting vertical movement of wheel unit and forms different tread patterns for different terrain

RACE MODE THE MEMBRANE CANOPY ASSUMES A RACING SILHOUETTE BY RECONFIGURING THE SHAPE MEMORY ALLOY METAL STRIPS WHICH EXPAND THE MEBRANE. THE MEMBRANE ALSO CHANGES TRANSPARENCY

In the Future Our consumption and requirement of Energy for everyday sustenance would increase many folds. This obviously would lead to independence from fossil fuels and start a quest for a cleaner and more abundant form of energy. Looking at present alternative sources of energy the only thing we find common between all of them is practicality, availability and low energy density which doesn’t make them a viable route to go through. Instead to solve our energy needs in the futureHumans look upon to our fundamental Energy warehouse “The Sun”. Due to a thick atmosphere and constant climatic changes the amount of solar energy we are able

SBSE : SPACE BASED SOLAR ENERGY

to harness is minimal and subject to numerous fluctuations due to local weather conditions and light availability. This would obviously be solved if we started to harness solar energy in space outside our atmosphere and beam it back to earth wirelessly with advanced technologies. This energy would be received by everyone just like we receive satellite television through our DTH receptors. Based on your subscription you would receive your share of energy every month anywhere anytime. With time the energy would become cheaper and cheaper as the project costs hit break even. This clean and abundant energy will help solve all energy crises in 3rd world countries which can receive the same amount of energy as other nations without being crippled by localised infrastructure deficiencies.

MantaRay

The Process

The Journey from the initial inspiration till the final automotive form in clay was quite exciting, challenging and satisfying. The creature Manta Ray is so astoundingly beautiful that I never fell short of inspiration throughout the course. The creature exhibits beautiful flowing lines both in its form and its movements which were my primary inspirations to start with and hopefully this inspiration has found its way into the final form in Clay.
