Global Cabaret Festival “One of the best things to happen in Toronto all year! A joyous celebration of the incredible t alent in this city” – Toronto star
October 1 2 – 14
The Global Cabaret Festival Fifth Anniversary Weekend
offers the best in dance, music,
and theatrical cabaret under one roof, for one weekend only. The entire Young Centre is transformed into a Cabaret venue, where over 100 of Canada’s leading performing artists collaborate to create over 20 original one-hour cabarets.
Albert Schultz & Friends – Young at Heart: A cool little concert for your inner child!
Brent Carver: The Tony Award-winning actor and singer performs an original cabaret.
Antônio Carlos Jobim Songbook: A celebration of Brazil’s master of bossa nova.
Heather Bambrick – Broadsway: Heather Bambrick, Julie Michels, and Diane Leah present an eclectic show of fun and frivolity – from Sondheim to Gershwin, Rossini to Lady Gaga, and everything in between.
Barbershop Cabaret: Step into the Festival’s barbershop for music and story-telling and perhaps to have your hair cut by an on-site barber! Bohemians in Brooklyn: A juicy cabaret by Tom Allen based on a group of artists (including W.H. Auden, Benjamin Britten and Gypsy Rose Lee) who lived in February House in Brooklyn in the early 1940s.
Dennis Lee’s Toronto: Dennis Lee and special guests present a musical journey through traditional songs of Toronto’s past, composed in our time. A tuneful new take on the city’s vibrant 200-year history.
2
Elvis Songbook: Young Centre Resident Artist Mike Ross directs a cabaret of classics from The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. Jackie & Kim Richardson – A Family Affair: Canada’s legendary Jackie Richardson shares the stage with her daughter Kim for a show of classic gospel, jazz and blues standards.
A Night at the Popera: A cabaret of the best and most beloved music from the world of opera. Oliver! A Cabaret: Be transported to a Dickensian pub as this cabaret brings new life to the songs of Lionel Bart’s Oliver!
Jean Stilwell & Patti Loach – What Was I Saying?: In their newest show pianist Patti Loach and Canada’s most famous “Carmen” Jean Stilwell - step once again into the intimacy of a cabaret room with all of their usual elegance, wit and aplomb. Judith Lander: Lander sings Weill, Brel and Sondheim in an hour of powerful interpretations of some of the world’s most brilliant theatrical composers and songwriters.
Patricia O’Callaghan’s Heart of the Song: Follow a musical path from Ireland and its folksongs, through the salons of Europe, all the way to today’s Canada. ProArteDanza’s Fellini Cabaret: The brilliant team of ProArteDanza reimagine the celebrated world of Federico Fellini in music, word, and dance. Retrocity – I-AM-CAN-80-AN: Popular Canadian 80s tunes done in Retrocity’s signature a cappella style.
Leonard Cohen Songbook: Young Centre Resident Artist Waleed Abdulhamid brings a fresh, worldbeat feel to the songs of Canada’s master troubadour. Michael Hughes – Mickey & Judy: A hilarious pseudo-memoir, chronicling Hughes’ childhood obsession with musicals and his journey from the psychiatric ward to Off-Broadway with a musical score that borrows from Broadway classics and the Judy Garland songbook.
Sophie Milman: The Canadian jazz sensation brings her unique musicality to the songs she loves in an intimate cabaret of voice and guitar. Spoon River Cabaret: An original musical interpretation of Edgar Lee Masters’ seminal 1915 collection of haunting poems from the grave. Whirl, The Dance Cabaret: Curated by Young Centre Resident Artists Roberto Campanella and Andrea Nann, the Young Centre Dance Award nominees take the stage to showcase their individual styles. 3
