2013 annual repor t
A MESSAGE FROM THE ARTISTIC D IRECTOR & BOARD CHAIR A year of great achievements, 2013 set the stage for what is to come. We like numbers. We love the data, and the strategy that comes from analysis. As a sector we are getting better at telling our story through numbers and quantifying our impact. We are, of course, always cognisant that numbers don’t tell the whole story. By every metric, 2013 was a successful year. The fact that 555 events were presented under the Soulpepper banner doesn’t convey the shivers that ran up everyone’s spine when Raquel Duffy descended from the heavens during Angels in America. That 4,827 youths were reached through our community programs this year doesn’t capture the pride that was felt when two of them shared their stories before an amazed crowd at Soulpepper At Play, our annual fundraising event. That Soulpepper reported another year “in the black”, speaks to the health of the organization, but the entrepreneurial spirit with which we approach our business goes beyond the bottom line. This annual report aims to share with you, our partners, some of the numbers and the stories that comprised Soulpepper’s 2013 season. Among the many highlights of the 2013 season were the ground-breaking marathon productions, Angels in America, and The Norman Conquests. Undertaking these massive projects is something Soulpepper couldn’t have done three years ago, and demonstrated a new level of artistic and organizational maturity. The result was critical, artistic, and financial success, and both productions returned as part of our 2014 season. Kim’s Convenience, by Soulpepper Academy graduate Ins Choi, began its national tour, and became the most widely seen new Canadian play of the year. The successful conflation of the Young Centre programming into the Soulpepper brand created opportunities to reach new audiences through multi-disciplinary programming, and the presence of this musical thread can already be felt reverberating throughout the company. We also welcomed the class of the 4th Soulpepper Academy, Canada’s only twoyear paid arts training program. In 2013, the Soulpepper Academy grew to 16 young professionals, offering for the first time independent streams
of study for directors, playwrights, designers, and producers, in addition to actors. This is an important evolution of the program as we nurture the next generation of Canadian theatre artists in all disciplines. 2013 also saw a significant amount of time strategizing around how we structure our organizational activity and articulate our mission to the public. Soulpepper has six interconnected platforms through which we realise our mission: In the Community (Youth Outreach and Audience Engagement); In The Future (the Soulpepper Academy); In the Pipeline (New Work Development); On the Stage (Plays, Presentations and Musical Events); On the Road (Touring); and On the Air (Multimedia). These platforms have been rooted in Soulpepper’s activity since its formation, and continue to challenge and inspire our company. Looking forward, we will be working with partners to explore new and meaningful creative opportunities in each of those areas. In 2013, audiences, peers, and critics sat up and took notice of what we have known all along, that clearly something special is happening at Soulpepper. To which we respond - just wait!

“For me, 2013 was all about gratitude. Gratitude that after 71 years there is a theatre company still asking me to “bare-all” on stage (perhaps too much so in Farther West). Gratitude for the opportunity to share the Soulpepper stages with new friends and old friends from seasons past. Gratitude that winning my first Dora Award was for Best Ensemble, which sums up what this company is all about. Gratitude for the many friends on stage, backstage, in the offices, in workshops, in our outreach programs, on our Board and in our audiences, who continue to feel like a family. Gratitude.” – william WEBSTER, Founding Member & resident artist PHOTO: N ATHAN KELLY

SUMMARIZED F INANCIAL STATEMENTS The summarized financial statements in this Annual Report present Soulpepper’s financial position as at December 31, 2013, and the results of its operations for the year then ended. The statements are derived from the audited financial statements of Soulpepper, prepared in accordance with Canadian accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations, and approved by the Board of Directors. Results for 2013 reflect increases in performance and other revenues and expenses netting to an operating surplus of $289,000, and increasing the accumulated surplus to $697,000. A number of factors contributed to these increases. Most significantly, on July 1, 2013, with the agreement of the boards of Soulpepper and the Young Centre for the Performing Arts and the applicable government funding agencies, sponsors and private donors, all Young Centre programming and artistic residencies were transferred to Soulpepper, including all applicable programming expenses and revenues, including fundraising and grants. This initiative has resulted in streamlined operations, cost efficiencies, and stronger branding in the marketplace. The successful national tour of Kim’s Convenience delivered Soulpepper’s largest box office from touring, contributing to the 11% growth in performance revenue. We are delighted that this tour continues with new cities in 2014.
[6
Distributions from a Soulpepper endowment managed by the Ontario Arts Foundation also increased by $116,000 and represented a 3.8% distribution; however these annual distributions are tied to market performance presenting a challenge for future planning. Endowment income was also received from the private giving foundation that controls and manages our third external endowment fund, the Baillie Artistic Fellowship Fund. At year end, the market value of Soulpepper’s externally held endowments totals $7.4 million, reflecting an increase of 9%. Expenses, including artistic and production, grew by 13%. The continued generosity of our individual, corporate and foundation donors gave us the means to expand our programming, investing more in artistic and production costs and in expanding the Soulpepper Academy. Almost $5.6 million of our 2013 operating budget provided employment to 223 artists and 64 full-time and part-time staff. Soulpepper, as a 50% joint venture partner in the Young Centre, together with George Brown College, is obligated to fund annual operating shortfalls. As at December 31, 2013, Soulpepper has contributed over $10.6 million to develop, start up and operate the Young Centre. Soulpepper accounts for its 50% investment in the Young Centre using the equity method, which results in a nil investment account.
With increased programming, an expanded Soulpepper Academy, and major touring commitments, 2013 was a year of significant positive change for Soulpepper. Achieving all this, as well as delivering an operating surplus, was not easy. Congratulations to the extraordinary efforts of the whole Soulpepper team to effect a year where revenues increased, costs were held in check and a surplus was achieved. Our goals for 2014 and beyond are ambitious. These initiatives will require continued growth in funding in order to be accomplished. We could not have achieved such a successful year or develop our plans to build on this platform in 2014 without the consistent dedication of our artists, staff, sponsors, donors, funders and patrons, and the considerable management and Board commitment during the year. Our deepest thanks to our many supporters.

STORIES FROM 2013: ON THE STAGE
“I feel so grateful to be part of a theatre company that is interested in my growth as an artist. Here I am, nearing 60 years old, given the opportunity to direct the best actors this country has to offer. And directing these thoroughbreds is a joy! Life in the deep end! Thrilling! Playing a rabbi, the oldest living Bolshevik, and Ethel Rosenberg in Angels in America, was a bit of good old fun for us all. But let’s face it, getting to act with my son for the first time was the best thrill a mother could have!” – Nancy Palk, Founding Member & resident artist
“Angels in America changed my life. I had to stretch myself further than I’ve ever stretched, to absorb the politics of the play, to try and understand the complete horror of the situation in which my character finds himself. I’ve never been more proud of a piece of work in my life. I’ve never been more proud of an ensemble of actors in my life. I’ve never been more delighted with the words I got to say. Professionally, it seems to have opened up a world of opportunities. And personally, it made me a better person, more compassionate, more engaged, more aware. A better citizen. Every day I walked into work at Soulpepper, I was aware how lucky we all were, and how we were striving to prove that we were worthy of such good fortune. Angels in America represents the ideal work experience for me, it represents the true and lasting power of theatre – the power to change the world one person at a time. I know this because it bettered me as an artist and as a person. It destroyed me, and it gave me joy. It woke me up. It made me grateful. I am not the same man I was.” – Damien Atkins, actor photos: Cylla von Tiedemann

IN THE FUTURE: THE 2013 – 2015 ACADEMY A fter a four-month national search process, the Soulpepper Academy welcomed 16 members into Canada’s only two-year paid theatre training program. “I realized a month into this awe-inspiring journey that work, work, work is the name of the game. The people are so diverse in their training background that it is sometimes challenging to find a familiar creative plane. But it is through collaborating with these diverse minds that I am able to gain access to a wider creative toolbox, and cultivate a personal relationship to an unfamiliar world. As with any training one expects to have a focused view of their discipline, but with the inclusion of other professional streams – directors, playwrights, designers and producers – in this year’s academy, I am confident to say I walked in as an actor and I’ll be walking out an artist.” – OYIN OLADEJO, SOULPEPPER ACADEMY

STORIES FROM 2013: IN THE COMMUNITY & ON THE ROAD Soulpepper continues to experience high demand for our youth outreach initiatives, including our newly established Ada Slaight Youth Link Program, which teams a group of our youth alumni with Soulpepper Resident Artists and a community organization. Together they lead a series of workshops for the youth at these organizations. While being mentored by Resident Artists, these young people (Youth Link Artists) serve as young facilitators and inspire other youth in the city to be passionate advocates for the arts. In 2013, Soulpepper launched a new partnership through our Ada Slaight Youth Link Program with CultureLink, an agency that helps new Canadians acclimatize to Toronto. One Soulpepper artist, one Youth Link Artist and nine young people, from diverse parts of the world, speaking different languages, with different experiences, were brought together for six weeks of workshops aimed at developing leadership, self-confidence, language skills, and creative expression. Theatre and performance became a level and unifying platform for these youth to experience, share and create together. On the final day, the youth came to Soulpepper and shared the work they collectively created, based on the stories of where they were from. They also had the opportunity to see a play on the Soulpepper stage and speak with actors in the cast. It was abundantly clear that where once a group of strangers stood, there now was a community.

The most-seen new play in Canada in 2013 was Kim’s Convenience by Soulpepper Academy graduate Ins Choi. “Whenever we arrive at a new theatre in a new city, there’s this excitement among our team of meeting the new audience. Like a first date, it is as if we’ve never done the show before. But once our first audience rises to their feet we feel as though we’ve arrived home. We’ve been falling in love with Canada, city by city, just as Canada has been falling in love with this play. Walking through the halls at the National Arts Centre, or the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre, London’s Grand, or Theatre Calgary, there’s a legacy of photos on their walls. Production shots of different shows in different theatres, many featuring the familiar faces of Nancy, Joe, Albert, Fiona, Stuart, Bill, Eric, etc. – all of the senior actors at Soulpepper over and over again. It is as if long ago they paved the road for us to travel on now. As if they’re saying, “it’s about time”. It’s humbling to know that one day, we’ll be on those walls to inspire other actors of colour on this journey.” – INS CHOI, ACADEMY GRADUATE & Resident artist

G IFTS THAT TRANSFORM Soulpepper is honoured to recognize the extraordinary commitment of our entire donor community to our mission and activity. In 2013, we celebrated three unique contributions that have ensured our organizational stability, our ability to innovate and develop new work, and the opportunity for meaningful employment for our artists. Soulpepper extends our sincere gratitude to Marilyn and Charles Baillie, Kevin and Roger Garland, and The Slaight Family for their leadership and imagination.
THE SLAIGHT FAMILY MUSIC PROGRAM In 2013, The Slaight Family made an extraordinary 5-year, $1.1 million contribution to Soulpepper to support our music initiatives. These initiatives will ensure the vitality of music at Soulpepper through the exploration and expansion of musical enrichment in all our programming. Led by the inaugural Slaight Family Director of Music, Mike Ross, the Slaight Family Music Program will engage some of Toronto’s most acclaimed musical talents in the expansion of Soulpepper’s use of music as a powerful storytelling device and as a central artistic presence in the work we produce. In addition, this gift will ensure that music is a key component of all our efforts in outreach, education, and community building for audiences of all ages.

THE BAILLIE ARTISTIC FELLOWSHIP In 2008, Marilyn and Charles Baillie generously donated $1 million to establish the Baillie Artistic Fellowship at Soulpepper. The role of the Baillie Fellow at Soulpepper is to fuel and maintain Soulpepper’s pursuit of excellence by providing residencies for artistic teachers of international caliber. In the years since the establishment of this fund we have been honoured to have Daniel Brooks, LászlÓ Marton, and currently Leah Cherniak, serve as our Baillie Fellow. In 2013, Leah continued to serve as Associate Director of the Soulpepper Academy, and was Director of The Barber of Seville, based on Theatre Columbus’s sensational adaptation.
Garland / Schultz funding allowed Soulpepper to commission Jason Sherman’s new adaptation of Arthur Schnitzler’s La Ronde, as well as the opportunity for the original creative team behind Theatre Columbus’s The Barber of Seville (Leah Cherniak, Michael O’Brien and John Millard) to reunite and revisit this classic production. The Garland / Schultz fund also made investments in the commissioning and development of Vern Thiessen’s adaptation of W. Somerset Maugham’s Of Human Bondage which will be included as a part of the 2014 season. Also supported were the workshops of three interdisciplinary pieces, The Lost Songs of Toronto, Dido and Aeneas, and The Judgement of Paris presented at the 2013 Global Cabaret Festival.
GARLAND / SCHULTZ ARTISTIC DEVELOPMENT FUND The Garland / Schultz Artistic Development Fund, established in 2007, provides the means for Soulpepper to invest in the areas of Artistic Engagement, New Creation, and Dissemination of Soulpepper productions. In 2013, the fund supported Soulpepper’s Artistic Residencies, including the positions of Resident Designer Lorenzo Savoini, and Resident Dramaturge Guillermo Verdecchia.
