A MESSAGE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Dear Friends, I recently had the privilege of performing for you for the first time in two years. Every night for several weeks I was surrounded on all sides by full and extraordinarily generous audiences, some of whom had spent nine hours in a single day at the theatre watching all three of The Norman Conquests. I also heard from the company of Angels in America how, after ten hours of theatre in a single day, audiences had leapt to their feet before the curtain call lights had even come up. These are concrete reminders of how blessed we are at Soulpepper to have an audience like you. Now entering our 17th season we are reminded every day on the street, in the lobby, and from the audience, how grateful you are to have this company in this city. This gratitude means SO much to the artists of Soulpepper and, believe me, we echo it back to you. This is, after all, your company. In the 16 years since we began with two shows in a rented space, we have grown to become the city’s largest employer of theatre artists, the custodian of the city’s largest audience, and the builder of the finest and most intimate multi-venue theatre space in Toronto. In the Soulpepper Academy we have the country’s most enriched professional training institution for theatre artists, training actors, directors, designers, playwrights, producers and stage managers. We are also the country’s leading producer of classical translations and adaptations by Canadian writers (26 productions to date). Throughout the year the artists that you see on the stage are spending their days in classrooms and studios throughout the city enriching and inspiring the youth of our community. We think of ourselves as Toronto’s Civic Theatre. As such, we endeavor to make our home a place where the audiences and artists of our city – young and old – feel a powerful sense of belonging. Over the next year you will be welcomed into this home, which you have helped to build, to share many experiences with us and with each other. We can’t wait for your arrival! Yours,
