Momentum 2016 Programme

Page 1

We’re thrilled to have you with us here at the Stafford Showground and we hope you love our new home as much as we do! We’ve got loads planned for these five days but as you know the main reason we’re all here is to meet with Jesus. We’ll be making loads of space to worship God, to hear from his word, and to pray for one another that we might be changed into his likeness. We’ll be tackling all sorts of subjects in our main meetings and seminars to help us live for God in every area of our lives including what it means to live naturally supernatural lives, leadership, politics, singleness and marriage, healing from past hurts, comparison, preparing and delivering great talks, finding hope, practising persistence, mission styles, depression, and self-control. We want to make loads of space for everyone to hang out, have fun and get to know one another so we’ve got lots of socials planned (see page 24) including Coffee for Six, an ice rink in our sports venue, a drive-in movie night and a huge pulled-pork picnic on Day 3.

Next summer we’re starting a new adventure with a Naturally Supernatural summer event and we invite you to join us! We desperately want to see the whole church equipped to move in the ministry and power of the Holy Spirit and we’re longing to be changed by spending time in God’s presence and be equipped and empowered to live in his power in our everyday lives. Our prayer is that we’ll leave Naturally Supernatural with both the passion and the power to proclaim him in word and deed.

That means that, sadly, this will be our last Momentum summer event. We have absolutely loved journeying with you guys over these last years and our hope and prayer is that you will continue to journey with us at Naturally Supernatural in 2017 and beyond. Please do book on and tell your friends and family – there will be something for everyone, of all ages and life-stages. We’ll be filling you in during the main meetings and you can turn to page 66 for more info too. But first things first! We’ve got five days ahead of us to spend with Jesus so let’s focus on him and make space for him to do all that he wants to so we return home challenged, refreshed, encouraged and looking more like our amazing God. Love from Mike PAGE 1

MOMENTUM 2016 / MAIN MEETINGS

m a i n m e e t i n g s WORSHIP

TIMES: DAY 1: 7PM, DAYS 2-4: 11AM & 7PM DAY 5: 10AM FOR COMMUNION & 7PM We all get together twice a day for the main meetings hosted by Mike Pilavachi, Ali Martin and Andy Croft. These meetings are our favourite part of the week as it’s so encouraging to be together to spend time praising God, hearing from his word and waiting on his Spirit. Here’s a little more information on what that looks like…

We believe we can worship God through the way we live our everyday lives, but we also love to spend time singing songs of worship to God. This is an opportunity to focus on God and tell him how much we love him, as well as providing the space for him to meet with us. These times will generally be led by our band from the stage and the words to the songs will be on the screens. Feel free to stand, sit or dance; whatever helps you worship and engage with God.

MOMENTUM 2016 / MAIN MEETINGS

TEACHING We love getting stuck into the Bible, discovering its lifechanging truths and finding out more about how God wants us to live our lives so we’ll make space in each meeting to do just that! One of the things we’ll be looking at is how we can live naturally supernatural lives as we’re passionate about knowing more of God’s presence in our lives and living in his power.

MINISTRY As Christians we believe the Holy Spirit is always with us but during the main meetings we make space to ask God to increase his presence in us. This may be to heal us physically or emotionally, to give us a deeper understanding of God’s love for us or to empower and equip us to show that love to the world around us. We’re careful not to hype anything up and Mike and the team will explain what they think God may be doing from the front. This is a great time to be open to what God wants to do in you and to pray for others. If you’d like to know more, we’ve put together some prayer ministry guidelines on page 70.

COMMUNION DAY 5: 10AM On our last morning together, we celebrate all that God has done during the week and, most of all, what he did for us on the cross by sharing Communion together and reflecting on the good news of Jesus’ death and resurrection.

PHOTOGRAPHY AND VIDEOGRAPHY We have a couple of official photographers and videographers taking photos and footage this week that we may use on social media and for fun/promotional purposes. Rest assured that no photos are taken and no film shot during ministry times so that you can feel totally relaxed as you meet with God.

MOMENTUM CAFé BEFORE THE MAIN MEETINGS We’ll be opening up the Momentum Café in the ToolShed before the main meetings so it’s the ideal place to meet your mates and can grab a hot drink and a pastry.

s o u l ac tion c a f é DAY 1: 9.15PM – MIDNIGHT DAYS 2-5: 1PM – 5.30PM (IN BETWEEN SEMINARS) & 9.30PM – MIDNIGHT Fancy a delicious caffeine-infused bev served with a tasty treat, safe in the knowledge that it’s Fairtrade guaranteed? Come along to the Soul Action Café. As the name suggests, this is the place to find out more about Soul Action, our partnership with Tearfund (a brilliant relief and development organisation). Feel free to ask one of the team about our new Gamechangers campaign. As you’ll see from the part-construction part-classroom theme, we’re supporting education initiatives this year. Education can be the key to unlocking potential, leading to greater opportunities, skills and safety yet many around the world are denied access. We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to get a good quality education so let’s work together to make this a reality. If you’re interested in the Soul Action seminars, David Westlake will be speaking at 4pm on Day 2 and 2.30pm on Day 3.

If you’re looking for a relaxed spot to catch up with a friend or enjoy some speciality coffee in between seminars, this is the place for you. The night time is most definitely the right time in Grounds! From 9.30pm this is the ideal place to grab a drink from the bar and enjoy some brilliant live music. There will also be an opportunity on night 2 for you to wow the crowd at our open-mic night.

NIGHT 1: JOEL BAKER Joel brings his own flavour with relatable songs influenced by hip hop and bluesy folk. He's had his music played on Radio 1, performed at the likes of Reading and Leeds festivals and appeared in a top ten viral chart on Spotify. NIGHT 2: OPEN MIC It's your time to shine! If you’d like to get involved, speak to the venue host at the bar on the first evening.

NIGHT 3: JOHN NICHOLAS John Nicholas is a Bridgend-born folk singer, ready to soothere your ears with his acoustic sound. NIGHT 4: RICHARD JAMES Richard James is a London-based singer songwriter from Devon; come and enjoy his infectious, soulful and acoustic sounds. Aged 18-30? Wondering what God is calling you to? The Church of England Ministry Experience Scheme (CEMES)

offers the chance to experience ministry first hand and explore if this is for you. The Church of England Ministry Experience Scheme offers placements in churches around the country for those aged 18 to 30 who wish to explore their calling. Based in parishes, you will be with a group of similar young adults, providing plenty of opportunity to share your experiences and learn together. The scheme includes practical experience of ministry, personal reflection and theological learning at a level suitable for each individual. We welcome all enquirers and are particularly keen to attract Black, Asian and minority ethnic people, young women and people from diverse social and cultural backgrounds as these groups are under-represented. Applications for placements starting in September 2016 are open. Placements are applied for separately in each diocese. Practical arrangements vary and the schemes aim to make generous provision for accommodation, food and expenses.

Visit www.callwaiting.org.uk/cemes/ for information on each diocesan scheme

This year, Uno comes with a brightly-coloured-block twist with its LEGO theme. So come, head back to your childhood, build a Stealth Starfighter or your own city, le’go of your worries and enjoy. BY

Weather permitting, we’ll be doing things a little differently this year by switching the setting each night. Listen out during the notices in the main meetings for more info.

PAGE 14

The Chat Room is, well, a room to chat. We’ve found some of the kindest and wisest people we know who’d love to meet you, listen to what you have to say and pray with you if you’d like. No question is too big or too small, just pop in.

STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS (12)

Night 2 A feel-good real-life story that will make you care about the success of a mop business against all odds! Jennifer Laurence leads a strong cast playing an eccentric family plagued by troubles as she tries to find a way out of the mess they’ve found themselves in. Laugh, cry and cheer as you’re inspired about what can be achieved with sheer grit and determination.

THE REVENANT (15)

Night 3 We had to wait a long, long time to find out what happened to our friends who live in a galaxy far, far away but this film was definitely worth the wait. Thirty years after the fall of the Empire, there’s a new threat rising in the form of the evil First Order. Our awesome new heroes Rey and Finn must join forces to try and restore peace, meeting up with some of our old friends along the way, and desperately searching for the last Jedi: Luke Skywalker.

Don ’t m is driv e-in s our mov ie: GRE ASE ! Day 4 at 10p m.

Night 5 After a brutal attack by a bear, frontiersman Hugh Glass is left for dead by his own hunting team. Despite his injuries Glass refuses to give up. Driven by his love for his Native American wife and son and set on finding the man who betrayed him, he undertakes a 200-mile journey through the vast and untamed West. His quest for revenge becomes a heroic saga of survival and transformation that shows off DiCaprio’s acting skills to their finest against a backdrop of stunning cinematography.

too l shed DAY 1: 9.15PM – MIDNIGHT DAYS 2-5: 1PM – 5.30PM & 9.30PM – MIDNIGHT London. New York. Paris. Hong Kong. They’ve all tried and failed to create a venue with the buzz of the ToolShed. This giant treasure trove is filled with organisations keen to make a difference in the world and help resource you in your walk with Jesus. It’s also home to the lovely Momentum Café.

PAGE 20

S UE N VE

MOMENTUM 2016 / toolshed

MOMENTUM CAFÉ Take some time out to enjoy a hot drink, a slice of rocky road cheesecake and a very warm welcome. This cafe is also open before the main meetings.

THE STAND Right in the middle of the ToolShed you’ll find The Stand. This is the place to pre-order our latest live album or a nice new hoodie as well as find some great resources that we think will encourage you in your faith. Come along, chat to our friendly team and find out more about what we’ll be getting up to throughout the year too.

HERE ARE A COUPLE OF THINGS WE’D LIKE YOU TO KNOW ABOUT THE TOOLSHED, THAT WE’RE PRETTY SERIOUS ABOUT: All the stands and organisations are here to equip you in your relationship with Jesus. That means none of them should be getting upset if you don’t agree with their theological angle on things. If you feel like you’ve been accosted by an over-zealous exhibitor, then pop into Info and let one of our team know.

Most of the items that are sold in the ToolShed are either resources or a way of generating money to support the work of a charitable trust. We know lots of you like having a browse but the absolute last thing we want is for anyone to feel pressured to spend any cash. We’re not trying to make money out of you.

From time to time Mike, Ali or Andy might mention a book, CD or DVD on mainstage. Just so you know, there are no marketing deals going on – if they say they like it and think you will too, then they mean they like it and think you will too (not that someone is paying them to say it’s brilliant).

Basically what this boils down to is the fact we like you, we think you’re pretty special, and we don’t want you to feel like you’re having lots of stuff pushed at you. We want you to be able to relax and have a good time at Momentum.

Perfectionism vs the gospel Andy Croft

2:30PM-3:30PM Rescued, restored and raised to be released Tich Smith

You can get there from here: How to harness hope Dr Roger Bretherton Hopeful people believe that the future will be better than the present and that they have a part to play in bringing it about. How can we become people who carry hope, for ourselves and for our communities, especially when we’ve been disappointed or disillusioned? In this practical workshop, Roger will use psychological science and biblical principles to show how we can begin to weave hope into our everyday lives and share it where it is needed most. Soul Action Café, 16M004

When we feel like we’ve fallen into a miry pit, Jesus is right there to journey alongside us, walking with us through each valley. Come and be inspired by Tich’s story of how God rescued him from crippling addictions and restored, raised and released him to love and serve orphans and vulnerable children in South Africa. Café Uno, 16M005

The comparison trap: Killing the cycle of comparison

Perfectionism is something many of us struggle with; we can have unrealistic expectations of ourselves or others. Our selfworth can easily become tied up with how we perform. If this is a struggle you’re familiar with, you'll know that receiving unconditional love and living in grace can be a challenge. Come and learn how to let go and enjoy the freedom of the gospel. Grounds, 16M007

Happily ever after Open Doors When you decided to follow Jesus, life was meant to be rosy, right? But you still haven’t found ‘the one’, you didn’t land that dream job, and you’re not sure what you’re doing with your life. Jesus never promised following him would be easy, and millions of your church family around the world experience the cost of following him every day. Come and hear some incredible and inspiring stories to help you stick with Jesus when life doesn’t turn out how you wanted it to. Late Night Worship, 16M008

You don’t have to be perfect, hugely talented or highly trained to change the world with God’s love, you just need to allow him to work through you. Come and be inspired to follow wherever God may lead and let his grace work in and through you. Soul Action Café, 16M009

Come along to this series looking at how we can develop our gifts so we can be the best communicators we can be. In the first session Ali will look at how to prepare a talk, how to use the Bible well, and how to find (and stick to) a main focus. Café Uno, 16M010

Partial fulfIlment Rob Wall How do we bridge the gap between Paul’s statement that every promise of God is, in Jesus, 'yes and amen' (2 Corinthians 1:20) and the fact that we read in Hebrews 11 that the patriarchs died not having seen the promises that were given to them? Rob will look at biblical examples to help us explore what we do when we don’t see God’s promises totally fulfilled in our lives. Main venue, 16M011

Do you have to go to church to be a Christian?

Violence against women: Where their suffering and your calling meet David Westlake Violence against women is a worldwide problem with a third of women around the world experiencing violence in their lifetime. Here in the UK 44% of women have experienced physical or sexual violence since the age of 15 and approximately 233 women are raped each day. These statistics are horrific. Ali Martin and David Westlake

James Grier

We’re passionate about men and women leading alongside each other but for many within the church there is still some confusion about what the Bible has to say about this. Ali and David will be tackling some of those tricky Bible passages that have caused debate to help us explore what God’s word has to say about women in leadership. Café Uno, 16M014

Surely the loving and forgiving God we worship doesn't require the death of an innocent man before he will forgive us. So why did Jesus have to die? Grounds, 16M015

The Bethel song ‘No longer slaves’ is loved by many but what if you feel like a total slave to fear? Does that mean you’re not a child of God? In this seminar we will look at the freedom and hope God offers and how we can begin to live in it. D A Y FOUR MONDAY 25TH JULY

9:30AM-10:30AM Transforming culture Freddie Pimm

Keep on keeping on: How to practice persistence

Loud and clear part 3 Ali Martin

Dr Roger Bretherton Our culture, and especially our generation, are actively rejecting the Christian faith and its way of life with many now declaring Britain a Post-Christian nation. Freddie will explore how we as a church can deal with this rejection and, rather than being pushed aside, act to actively transform and shape our culture in the name of Christ. Café Uno, 16M024

Persistence turns potential into reality and when it comes to changing the world, persistence is more important than talent. The ability to keep going, to bounce back after failure and maintain passion in the face of opposition, are essential qualities for those who want to make an impact. The good news is they can all be learned. In this practical workshop Roger will use state-of-the-art psychology and theology to encourage persistent pursuit of God’s calling. Grounds, 16M025

Transformation?

Tetanus, tsunamis and tarantulas – why are they in God’s good world? Michael Lloyd The problem of evil is one of the key questions of life – personally, pastorally, apologetically. When we become Christians we’re born again but many of us find ourselves frustrated at how slowly we’re changing ‘from one degree of glory to another’. Sometimes it feels like we’re going backwards! So how does spiritual transformation actually happen? What is God’s responsibility and what habits can we cultivate to help us grow? This is a practical guide to becoming more like Jesus. Main venue, 16M029

Free people, free people Simon Holley Jesus told us that we were to preach the gospel, heal the sick and set free the oppressed. How do we live out this command in today’s world? Simon will unpack the foundations necessary to living free and setting others free wherever we go. Grounds, 16M030

Late Night Worship, 16M032

If, who and when should I get married? Ness Wilson The first most important decision for us all is to choose to follow Christ. The second is if or who to marry as our life partners have more influence on our lives and destiny than anyone else. Ness will tackle some key questions: Can I be single and fulfilled? Can I be sure I’ve found the ‘right one’ for me? Can I ever know I’m ready to commit? How can I find and become the right partner? Soul Action Café, 16M033

What does God want to do with my life? Derek Walmsley

4:00PM-5:00PM Help my unbelief Simon Holley

Enjoying the fatherhood of God Fiona Gibson The story of our loving adoption as sons and daughters of a perfect Father is at the heart of our faith yet for many of us the idea of a dad brings up a whole host of horrible associations and memories. Talk of God as Father can be complicated at best and frightening at worst. Drawing on personal experience Fiona will help us explore how those of us who struggle to relate to God as Father can be helped to grow in love, trust, and enjoyment of this extraordinary and special relationship. Grounds, 16M041

Staying focused: How to strengthen self-control Dr Roger Bretherton

How do we get God’s guidance and find out what our vocation should be? How can the Bible help us navigate all the choices available to us? We’ll look at Jesus as the ultimate example of what it means to follow your calling, and look at what God is calling us to as a community of believers as well as individuals. Late Night Worship, 16M043

On fIre or just burning out? Kate Middleton

We admire heroes of old with great faith but wonder if we could ever be like them. We all want to grow in faith but sometimes feel overwhelmed with the unbelief we find in our hearts. In this seminar Simon will outline the journey of the Kings Arms church as they’ve learned to deal with unbelief and grow in faith. Café Uno, 16M045

When Jeremiah 29:11 doesn't deliver Miriam Swaffield

How do we get the balance right when there are so many things we’re passionate about and we have to fit them in around a working week and all of life’s responsibilities? What do we do when the demands of life are leaving us feeling more worn out than all out for God? Come along to explore how we can fulfil our potential without burning out along the way. Soul Action Café, 16M044

Self-control is the ability to stay focused while avoiding distraction and temptation. People with high self-control form good habits and avoid many of the problems associated with over-indulgence. In this practical workshop, Roger will examine the surprising importance of selfcontrol throughout the Bible and offers insights from contemporary psychology on strengthening the ability to maintain undistracted focus and craft healthy habits. If I say I am without emotion?

WHAT’S HAPPENING TODAY? 10am: We’ll be kicking off the main meeting a little earlier this morning to make plenty of space to take communion and to reflect on all that God has done this week. Don’t forget to pick up some resources to take home from the ToolShed, grab one more hot chocolate mountain, have another go on the ice in sports or just chill out with your mates in the afternoon sunshine.

Kate Middleton Emotions are part of life, but they can be inconvenient. We see so many examples of how emotions can lead people astray, and read biblical warnings about the power of some emotions - would we be better off without them? How are emotions part of the brain and body God designed, and why do they so often cause such problems? This seminar will help reframe our view of our emotions and explain, far from being a sign of weakness, how they could be our greatest asset. Soul Action Café, 16M049

LIV CHOIR We’re thrilled to have the amazing LIV Choir here with us from South Africa to tell the amazing story of LIV Village (that was started by Tich & Joan Smith) through song and dance. They’ll be making an appearance in our main meetings as well as performing one afternoon – don’t miss them!

MICHAEL LLOYD Michael is Principal of Wycliffe Hall, and author of Cafe Theology, a popular-level look at Christian theology. He is a contributor to a theological podcast called The Godpod, though most of his jokes have to be edited out. A friend once said of him that he has the unique ability to simultaneously raise and lower the tone of any conversation.

ALI MARTIN Ali is part of the Leadership Team at Soul Survivor and our associated church Soul Survivor Watford. Her great loves in life include Aussie husband Joel, their two kids Will and Esther, pick ‘n’ mix, and disaster movies. She’s the author of the book ‘Loud & Clear’, loves to whip up a feast for her friends and – despite her love of make-up – is pretty sure she could last 18 years in the wilderness Bear Grylls style.

KATE MIDDLETON Kate Middleton isn’t married to royalty but she is a psychologist and church leader with a medical background, and a passion for applying psychology and faith to real life. She speaks across the UK on a variety of topics, has authored several books, and is one of the leaders of ‘Mind and Soul’ (a national organisation exploring Christianity and mental health).

PAGE 43

JO MOODY Jo is a licensed minister through the Apostolic Network of Global Awakening and a Christian Life Coach. She leads healing teams, teaches, speaks, trains and equips leaders and laypeople nationally and internationally in all types of ministry venues. Jo lives in Rocklin, California, is married to Mike and mum to Kian.

OPEN DOORS Open Doors have been working with persecuted Christians for 60 years since Brother Andrew first smuggled Bibles in Communist Europe. They now work in over 50 countries providing Bibles, Christian materials, and training, as well as doing advocacy work to help those who suffer because they follow Jesus.

MIKE PILAVACHI Mike heads up Soul Survivor and our associated church Soul Survivor Watford. He loves beating* Andy at squash (*he may have a different definition of ‘beating’ than the rest of us), growing grape vines, and telling terrible jokes such as: ‘I stayed up all night to see where the sun went. And then it dawned on me…’

T H I N G S T O KNOW INFO

FREE PHONE CHARGING

Our Info team will be ready to greet you from 8am until midnight each day. Pop in and say hi if you have any queries on your booking, need an extra day pass or programme, have broken your wristband, have spotted something that needs fixing around the showground, or have baked us a cake. If you prefer to phone, you can call us on 0303 333 1333.

If you’re not testing out your ability to fast from technology this week you’ll probably be desperately in need of a plug point at some point to get your mobile topped up. To help you out we’ll have charging points in each of our cafés so you can sit and chat with your mates while topping up your juice. Charging is, of course, free, but you’ll need to stay with your phone in case someone else takes a shine to it.

We have some large banners around the showground with huge maps and we also post lots of info on the screens in the main meetings so keep an eye out for those.

FREE WIFI To keep you connected we’ve got wifi through the main areas of the showground. It’s free, so just check out the notices for details of how to access it.

FACILITIES FOR HEARING IMPAIRED

APP All of the info in this programme is available on our free handy app. Search for the Soul Survivor app in your app store, and then download the Momentum programme from there.

CASH POINT Unfortunately there’s no cash point on the showground but there’s one at the Asda supermarket which is just a five minute drive away. Turn right out of the car park, head towards the town centre and you’ll pick up the superstore signs. Alternatively stick ST16 3TA in your sat nav and be kept up to date with how many yards it is before you need to turn left.

WRISTBANDS Your wristband will be your constant companion during Momentum, helping you get into all the venues and following you wherever you go. If yours finds itself in pieces (which is pretty tough as they are very sturdy) bring it along to Info and we’ll get you a new one for £1. If you manage to lose yours you’ll need to pay £40 to replace it so try and hang on to it!

We have a loop system in the main meeting venue and those meetings will also be signed. There’s an allocated seating area to get the best view; ask one of the stewards to show you if it’s not clear where to head.

SPECIAL NEEDS There is a space towards the front of the main meeting venue for anyone in a wheelchair and we also have some seating for those who can’t sit on the floor. If you have any special needs that you think we can help with please do come and chat with us in Info.

LOST PROPERTY Been separated from your Bible/ left wellie/favourite pair of stripy socks? Pop along to Info and we’ll see if we can reunite you. If you get home and realise you’ve left something behind, do get in touch (info@soulsurvivor.com). We’ll be here in Stafford for five days after Momentum (during Soul Survivor A) and then we’ll take all valuables back to our office in Watford where we’ll have a Hunger Games style event to see who gets to keep them. All non-valuables will be donated to a local charity before we leave so do try and check you’ve got everything before you go home.

MOMENTUM 2016 / THINGS TO KNOW

COME TO MOMENTUM ON YOUR OWN? If you’d like to get to know a few people say hi to your village host and they will introduce you to others on your village, plus you can sign up for Coffee for Six so you can meet with different people throughout the week.

VILLAGE HOSTS We have gathered some of the friendliest people in all the land to look after you in your village! Like all good hosts they are there to make your stay as brilliant as possible and they should be your first port of call if you have any questions or need any help. Not only will they lend you a mallet if you’ve forgotten yours and are having trouble with your tent pegs, they may well make you a brew while they’re at it. What a lovely bunch!

STEWARDS Standing proudly on the door of every venue are our elite stewards. They are here to keep us all safe* and to check your wristbands (*be warned, they are super strong and will fling you into the next field if they find out you’re not legit so best to stay on the right side of them). Please do follow any instructions they give you in venues and around the site as they have your best interests at heart.

MOMENTUM 2016 / FOOD

food All of our cafés serve up delicious cakes but if you’re in need of a hot meal and don’t fancy cooking, head to the glorious food vans where you’ll find fish and chips, gourmet burgers, Thai, woodfired pizzas, Mexican street food, crepes and more. Unfortunately we don’t control the prices of the food vans but if you’d like to find some cheaper options check out the info below.

SUPERMARKET

FOOD COLLECTION

In need of supplies? There’s a mammoth Asda just a five minute drive away from the showground and it sells everything you could ever possibly want. Ever. Turn right out of the car park, towards the town centre and you’ll soon pick up the superstore signs. Or if you prefer the fully guided experience, pop ST16 3TA into your sat nav.

Brought too many beans?! We’ll take them and any unwanted, unopened and non-perishable food items off your hands on the afternoon of Day 5 or the morning of Day 6. Bring them along to Info and we’ll make sure they go to a local charity who will make good use of them.

Asda will also happily deliver your goods to the showground which is handy. Give them the address below and arrange to meet them at the main gate as unfortunately we’re not able to accept shopping on your behalf (we can’t be trusted not to steal your sweets).

GAS AND CAMPING SUPPLIES Running out of gas? Lost your tent pegs? Fear not; there’s a little shop selling camping related items in the ToolShed.

Your village (e.g. Green 1) c/o Soul Survivor, Stafford Showground, Weston Road, Stafford, ST18 0BD.

ICE PACKS

ONSITE SHOP If you’re just after a few essentials or little treats, head to the onsite shop. They stock milk, bread, pasta and toiletries as well as the most amazing ice cream and pick ‘n’ mix. Opening times will be displayed outside the shop (which is on the side of the main meeting venue).

Want to keep your milk cool? Head to Stores to swap your warm ice/slush packs for cold ones. You can also buy new ice packs for £2.

We know the world has gone a bit health and safety mad but we promise not to enforce safety goggles and high-vis jackets on you, these are just a few useful bits of info and sensible suggestions…

IN AN EMERGENCY

FIRST AID

Please don’t call 999 yourself as this will actually delay help getting through. Instead call the number printed on your wristband – 0300 302 0330 – and we will get the right emergency service to you. Alternatively you can pop into Info or get someone with a radio to call us.

We have a great team of doctors and nurses on standby should anyone need them this week. The first aid room is open from 9am until midnight but if you need help outside of those times please contact Comms who will arrange help for you. If you have an ongoing medical condition that may require attention during Momentum do pop in and let the first aid team know so they can give you the best and quickest care when you need it. They are also happy to store any medication for you if that would be helpful.

FIRE REGS

SICKNESS

We’re sure the local fire brigade are a lovely bunch but we’d rather they didn’t come to Momentum for the wrong reasons. Please don’t cook inside your tent – it always seems like a good idea if it’s a bit cold or wet outside but it really, really isn’t!

You can’t beat a bit of good old fashioned soap and water to keep the germs at bay (although a bit of anti-bac hand gel probably wouldn’t go a miss either) but if you do get a sudden high temperature or meet D&V (diarrhoea and vomiting) please stay in your tent to stop the spread of infection and get a friend to contact the first aid team on your behalf.

t h e o f f e r i n g On night 4 we will be taking up a collection to go towards the work of Soul Action, to support our friends in the persecuted church, and to help us raise up young leaders. There is no pressure to give but if you would like to just follow the directions given in the main meeting. There will also be Gift Aid declaration forms for those of you who are fortunate enough to pay tax. You can also drop any gifts into Info during the week.

SOUL ACTION

YOUNG LEADERS

PERSECUTED CHURCH

Soul Action is a partnership between Soul Survivor and Tearfund that is all about empowering young people to get involved in issues of poverty and injustice. This year Soul Action is running a Gamechangers campaign to raise money for access to education. Find out how to get involved on page 57.

One of our passions is raising up young leaders who will love and serve the Church so we run a leadership course called Soul61 every year. We are always looking for ways to invest in the church leaders/ planters, worship leaders, speakers and youth workers of tomorrow.

Many Christians around the world suffer for their faith. They may be beaten, tortured, imprisoned or even killed for owning a Bible, meeting with other Christians, or just for loving Jesus. We work closely with friends in Central Asia who are persecuted as we want to encourage, resource, support, equip and strengthen them in their faith.

SUPPORT S O U L S U R V I V O R We love working with you guys and with teenagers but we need your help to do what we do! We’re a small charity and we want to keep our event prices as low as possible to make sure they are as accessible to as many people as possible. We also love being able to give stuff away for free like our teaching (which is available online) and our Bible in One Year app. Because of all of this, we rely on the help of generous people like you to help support us in a number of ways:

SHOP If you like shopping online, head to www.easyfundraising.co.uk and select Soul Survivor as your chosen charity. There are loads of retailers who will then donate money to us every time you shop! You can also grab the Charitable Bookings app and when you eat at selected restaurants we receive a donation.

GIVE

PRAY

Whether you’re in the fortunate position to be able to set up a monthly standing order, or can give us a one-off gift, every pound and penny helps. If you are lucky enough to pay tax, then gift aiding your donation gives us an extra 25% from the government at no extra cost to you.

We hugely appreciate anyone who prays for us as we seek to follow God and be led by him in all we do. We’d also love for you to pray for the people who come to our events, that they would continue to develop their relationship with Jesus and be encouraged and equipped by him in all they do.

DO If you’re short on cash but could hold a fundraising event for us that would be amazing!

BRING If you know some young people who would benefit from meeting with Jesus at Soul Survivor, how about being their responsible adult and bringing them along this summer or next? Every over 18 can bring up to six teenagers and there’s loads of info on our website to help make planning as easy as possible for you.

SERVE We need you! Our events are run by an army of volunteers who bring all sorts of skills to the table as they get stuck in and make things happen. They do everything from filming the pop up events to serving cups of tea in cafés. Find out more on page 59 and at: www.soulsurvivor.com/team

The more the merrier at our events so please do tell your friends and family if you’ve had a good time and encourage them to check out Soul Survivor or Naturally Supernatural!

CHURCH OFFERING If Soul Survivor and Momentum has been a blessing to people in your church, we’d love for you to consider taking up a one-off offering for us.

You can find out more about ways to give at www.soulsurvivor.com/give.

MOMENTUM 2016 / soul action

S O U L action SEXUAL ABUSE SURVEY RESULTS

42% have been pressured to perform sexual acts they did not want to by a partner.

93% have received unwanted comments about their physical appearance; 40% said this happened ‘frequently’.

SOME OF THE THINGS WE FOUND WERE*: •

44% of responders said they have been touched sexually by someone they don’t know; over half have been touched sexually by someone they didn't want to be touched by.

30% said that they ‘agreed’ or ‘strongly agreed’ that they had experienced fear of their partner in a relationship.

Almost half (48%) said they had been subjected to sexual comments that made them feel uncomfortable on public transport. 75% had experienced this in other public spaces such as shops and streets.

Over two thirds of people have had sexual comments made about them by someone they know which have made them feel uncomfortable.

22% of people have experienced violence from a member of the opposite sex.

This is clearly not OK. If this is what people who come to Momentum have answered, it is obvious that there is a real problem in our society as to how we treat each other. We believe in a culture of honour where everyone is treated equally and shown the respect and love that God has for them by everyone they interact with. We must stand up for Kingdom values and play an active role in changing the situation.

If you would like to unpack these issues more, go to David Westlake’s seminars ‘Violence against women: Where their suffering and your calling meet’ (Day 2, 4pm) and ‘Man Up! Godly Masculinity' (Day 3, 2:30pm) in the Soul Action Café. Also check out the Soul Action stand, and our friends Restore and Just Love, who are also exhibiting in the ToolShed.

Soul Action is the bit of Soul Survivor that exists to help us all do something about issues of injustice and poverty. Come and visit us in the ToolShed and have a drink at the Soul Action Café, which is stocked full of Fairtrade treats. www.soulsurvivor.com/soulaction

PAGE 56

Facebook Twitter Instagram @soulactionuk

*Most of the questions which received these responses were answered by over 300 people; all received at least 245 responses.

At Momentum last year Soul Action conducted a survey about issues of sexual abuse and the results were shocking. There were several stories shared by Momentum attendees who had experienced sexual discrimination, sexual abuse and rape. If you would like to find out more about the research, or would like to share your own experiences, please come and chat to our team at the Soul Action stand.

“I believed a lie for many years that I had to do things for guys. It was my job to please them and if they were upset it was my fault.”

WE WANT TO SEE A GENERATION OF GAME CHANGERS RISING UP, WHO ARE TAKING AN ACTIVE ROLE IN FOLLOWING GOD’S CALL AND HELPING TO RESTORE HIS JUSTICE AND BRING HIS LOVE TO A BROKEN WORLD. We believe that every individual has the ability to make a difference. We want to see God-given potential realised in both ourselves and in others around the world who don’t currently have the opportunities we do. Education is key to unlocking potential and so this year Soul Action are supporting educational projects in South Africa where many children currently miss out on learning because of their race, wealth or location. We invite you to join with us, to dream big and to be a game changer! Come and find out more on the Soul Action stand and be sure to get your wristband.

b e o n t e a m We love our team members! Each summer thousands of lovely people give their time and energy to serve the young people who come to Soul Survivor events by being on team. We have roles that cover all sorts of skills and interests from bandaging knees in first aid to refereeing the five-a-side footie tournament. It’s loads of fun getting stuck in behind the scenes; here’s what some of last year’s team members said about their experiences: "We met some amazing people through being Village Hosts at Momentum and it was a real privilege to help and serve them. We were able to pray with and for our villagers and made some awesome new friends. It was also a real time of feeding on God for me and being renewed and sent out again. Both my husband and I came away feeling so excited for the future even though we have no idea what we are doing or where we are going! We do know that God is in it and we trust him." "Being on team was such a good bonding experience with other people fully invested in God and I’d love to do it again."

"Serving is a great way to meet people! I came with just two friends and met so many great people of a similar age, a number of whom I have kept in touch with."

"It was a joy to serve, no matter what I was doing, rain or shine! Being on team, and feeling a valuable part of enabling Soul Survivor to happen, enabling thousands of people to meet with God was incredible. God taught me a lot about serving, leading, enabling and how he is glorified through that."

If you’d like to join the gang and be on team next summer, we’d love to have you! Most team members get a free place and get their food provided too. For more info about the various teams and how you can apply, head on over to www. soulsurvivor.com/team.

MOMENTUM 2016 / SOUL61

S O U L 6 1 Soul61 is the part of Soul Survivor that focuses on equipping, resourcing, teaching and supporting 18-24 year olds who want to develop as leaders. Our main programme is a ten-month course to help you deepen your relationship with Jesus and equip you in your leadership to impact this world for him.

WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT?

WHAT WILL I DO?

Soul61 is an opportunity to set the foundation for a lifetime of leadership. We want to give you space to encounter God, worship him, wait on him and allow him to mould you into the person he wants you to be. Throw yourself in and you will be challenged and stretched in your character and gifts as you learn, grow and develop your skills.

WHO IS IT FOR?

You will develop your leadership skills at the heart of Soul Survivor, getting involved in all aspects of church life, various conferences and events. Each week you will have two days of teaching with highly respected speakers plus practical training as part of either the worship or leadership stream. We want to prepare you to lead for the rest of your life and we believe the best way to do this is by trusting you with real situations and responsibilities.

Soul61 is for anyone aged 18-24 who feels the call of God on their life to serve his people. We’re not looking for individuals who feel they have made it; we’re after those who have a deep and genuine desire to develop their character, and have an openness to be used by God wherever he chooses.

MOMENTUM 2016 / being green

G O GREEN Hopefully you’re as enthusiastic as us about looking after the amazing planet that God has given us. So all that doesn’t go out of the window while we’re here, these are some ways you can stay green:

RECYCLE

RE-USE

FAIRTRADE

We’ve made recycling nice and easy by putting bins for glass, plastics and cans all over the main areas of the showground. In each camping village there is a waste point for your rubbish which also has recycling bags you can take back to your tent with you.

Paper plates are pretty convenient but they’re not great for the environment so please do use re-useable items where you can. If you have a travel mug with you, we’ll happily put your coffee, tea or hot chocolate in there rather than using a disposable cup in our cafés.

All the tea, coffee, sugar and hot chocolate here at Momentum is fairly-traded so you can enjoy them with a clean conscience. We also source our milk locally and are selling the most ethical bottled water available. All of our muffins and much of our chocolate is Fairtrade and all of our clothing is Fair Wear certified. Because we have to use disposable items like cups and napkins in our cafes we source the most sustainable and ecofriendly products we can.

SPEEDY SHOWERS Quick showers not only save the precious commodity of water, they also keep your fellow campers happy as they won’t have to wait too long for their turn!

GOT LEFTOVERS? We can find a good home for them! Any non-perishable unopened foods can be brought to Info on Day 5 or the morning of Day 6 and we’ll donate them to a local charity.

Exciting news! In 2017 we’ve got a brand new summer event for you that’s all about spending time in God’s presence and being equipped and empowered to move in the power of his Holy Spirit.

put into practice the things we’re learning both by praying for one another and by praying for people in the local area of Stafford. Teaching will cover areas such as:

• • • • • • •

Over the last few years we have felt an increasing passion to encourage the church to move in the ministry of the Holy Spirit and we believe it is time to hold an event for the whole church to explore and make space for God’s Spirit. Each February we hold a Naturally Supernatural conference at Soul Survivor Watford and it is the highlight of our year. Jesus has met with us in wonderful ways and we have been equipped to serve others through the power of his Spirit. These times have been marked by a tangible sense of God’s presence which has often seemed like a Mount of Transfiguration experience. By the end of the three days we have seen people glowing from beholding and reflecting something of God’s glory. We believe that the great need today is to encounter the Lord in a way that changes us and nothing changes us like being in his presence.

Hearing the voice of God Physical healing Emotional healing Spirit-led worship Spirit-led evangelism How to lead a ministry time How to grow your church in openness to the Holy Spirit

We will also have a team who would love to pray for you and listen to God on your behalf to strengthen and encourage you.

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES There will be cafés, live-music venues, Coffee for Six, a bar and the kinds of community events we’ve all enjoyed together here at Momentum. Plus we’ll have family-friendly activities and a full children’s and youth work programme reflecting the theme of the conference in an age appropriate way and making space to teach and equip the under 12s to move in the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

WORSHIP, TEACHING AND MINISTRY Just like at Momentum, the focus of our time together will be two main meetings a day where we will gather for extended times of worship, teaching and ministry. We want to spend time in God’s presence, be challenged and encouraged by what the Bible says about us leading naturally supernatural lives and pray for one another.

Our great desire is to equip God’s people of all ages and experience to move in the ministry and power of the Holy Spirit so we fall more in love in with Jesus, and have both the passion and the power to proclaim him in word and deed. We believe this is the way forward if we are to be effective witnesses and reach our nation with the gospel.

SEMINARS AND WORKSHOPS

Please do come and join us, bring your friends and family, and let’s seek God together.

Each afternoon there will be a range of seminars and practical workshops so we can

With love from Mike

MOMENTUM 2016 / prayer ministry

P R AY E R MINISTRY G U I D E L I N E S One of the things we’re really passionate about at Soul Survivor is meeting with God. During the main meetings we will always try to let God lead what’s going on and make space for him to meet with us. As part of this the leaders of the meeting will make time for us to wait on the Holy Spirit and pray for groups of people they believe God particularly wants to meet with. This is a great opportunity for God to work in our lives and it’s brilliant to be as open to him as possible. Don’t worry if you’ve never been prayed for in this way, or if you’re not sure how to pray for others; Mike P and the team will talk you through what’s going on and some basics for praying. We also have an experienced enabling team who will be around to help you and answer your questions. We’d really encourage you to get along to Ali Martin's seminar ‘Prayer ministry 101' on Day 2 as well.

WHAT HAPPENS? Ministry times usually begin with an invitation from someone on the stage for people to wait on and respond to the Holy Spirit. The most important thing to remember is that this is God’s work, not ours. Try to stay open to what God might want to do in your life and invite him to speak to you. Everyone responds differently to meeting with God so try not to focus too much on your reaction or the reactions of those around you. We can experience God in all sorts of ways and physical manifestations aren’t the important thing. If you’d like to receive from God just stay focused on him. If you’d like to pray for other people, have a read on for some helpful tips.

A GUIDE TO PRAYING FOR OTHERS When you’re praying remember that you are there to encourage those seeking God and to bless what the Holy Spirit is doing. There is no ‘right way’ to pray for each other but we’ve included these guidelines as they are tried and tested and tend to work quite well! While you’re with us please stick to the advice given. Lots of it is just straight-forward common sense! Don’t be afraid to ask someone what they would like you to

pray for and what God is doing even if the Holy Spirit is moving powerfully on them (in Luke 18:40 Jesus asked the blind man ‘What do you want me to do for you?’). However, be aware of not turning this into a long conversation; this is a time for the Holy Spirit to offer counselling, not you! If appropriate you can speak into the situation or condition in Jesus’ name, but be sensitive and recognise that you may be wrong. If you have a prophetic word or picture, offer these as a prayer or in such a way that the person being prayed for can make their own decision as to how appropriate they are. Never insist that what you have to say is a word from God and always seek to strengthen, encourage and comfort the person you’re praying for (1 Corinthians 14:3). Encourage the person to receive from God and be still, rather than praying for themselves. Some people may show this attitude by opening their hands in front of them. The laying on of hands to pray is Biblical. We see Jesus touched a man to heal him of leprosy in Mark 1: 40-45 and he laid hands on the children to bless them in Matthew 19:13-15. That said, not everyone is comfortable with this so please be sensitive. Please also use common sense about where you place your hands so it doesn’t become distracting for the person you are praying for. Keep your eyes open when you pray for someone. This means you are more aware of what God is doing and how the person is responding. It also means you can

PAGE 71

grab them some tissues if they start crying or be prepared if they look like they may fall over in the power of the Spirit. If someone does fall over in the power of the Holy Spirit then please make sure they are in a comfortable position, not draped over anyone else and that their dignity is maintained (i.e. nothing is on show that shouldn’t be). If you can, put a jumper or jacket under the person’s head. It is not always necessary to stay with them for the whole time but if you move away encourage them to keep receiving from God and keep an eye on them to check they are safe. It can be helpful to quietly let them know that you will return in a little while so they know that they are not forgotten. Ask the Holy Spirit for guidance and encouragement, and be prepared to wait; this is God’s work, not yours. The person you are praying for may tell you about things that have happened in their life but don’t appear to be shocked by any disclosures. Remember that confidentiality is of the utmost importance but DO NOT promise to keep anything secret, especially with regards to claims of abuse. Your first point of contact in such a situation should be a member of the enabling team. They are there to support you and the person you are praying with and will be able to take things further if necessary. It’s very important to allow the expression of feelings and this might mean people cry, shake or respond in other ways to what God is doing. This is totally fine but be careful not to suppress or to build

MOMENTUM 2016 / prayer ministry

PRAYING FOR PHYSICAL HEALING When Jesus healed people in the Bible he spoke to the sickness and ailments and commanded them to be healed. Jesus gives us the power and authority to do the same in his name. So, for example, if you are praying for a sight problem, speak to the eye and tell it to ‘Be open and see in Jesus’ name’. If you’re praying for an ear, speak to the ear and tell it to be open and hear in the name of Jesus. up the situation. Alternatively some people might not seem to respond physically at all. That’s fine too. We want God to do what he wants to do, we don’t want to get in the way of that and we want to make sure people leave a time of ministry feeling loved and valued. It’s brilliant to have more than one person praying for someone at a time so feel free to go over and join someone who’s praying already. That said, it can be distracting if a large group gather around someone when the ministry is of a sensitive nature so please ensure people have enough personal space. If at any time you feel out of your depth then please ask for help from the enabling team. We all find ourselves in situations that we can’t handle alone. This is not failure and it’s often good to pray with others, plus it’s a great way to learn more!

When praying for injuries that cause pain or immobility ask the person what level of pain they have on a scale of 1-10 (10 being the highest pain possible). Speak to the condition in the name of Jesus and command it to be healed. Speak to the pain and tell it very firmly to ‘Stop it,’ in Jesus’ name (but remember you don’t need to shout!). If appropriate speak to the mobility of the joint or limb and tell it to be healed in Jesus’ name. After this short prayer ask the person to test for pain and mobility in the injured area. Ask for the number out of 10 of the level of pain and mobility to see if it has gone down. Repeat the prayer, if necessary, as many times as you are both comfortable with.

PAGE 72

AND FINALLY Not everyone is familiar with ministry and prayer times and some people feel a bit concerned or nervous when they become aware of God working through his Holy Spirit. We need to help people who are receiving feel comfortable and safe, and to encourage them to reach out to God. Always be sensitive and respectful, keeping in mind how you would like to be prayed for, and constantly asking for God’s help. Reassure those being prayed for that God has heard sincere prayers and the cries of our hearts and encourage them to expect answers. Speak healing, peace and release in the name of Jesus and remember the place of repentance, forgiveness and being forgiven. If someone would like extra prayer you can refer them to a member of the enabling team or to the Chat Room which is open every afternoon and evening. Encourage the person to receive as much prayer as they like during the event but also to seek ongoing ministry support from their home church. Don’t make any appointments to pray with people you don’t know outside of the meeting.

All these are tips to help you let God work through you. Remember: don’t worry! The enabling team and the person leading the meeting will be giving directions and advice to everyone. The important thing is that you are ready and willing to pray for those around you.

SITE RULES Let’s make sure we all stay happy campers by keeping to these rules.

1. If anyone is under 18 then they are, at all times, the responsibility of the group leader they came with. 2. No alcohol is to be consumed by anyone under 18 on site. 3. Strictly no drugs, intoxicating agents (such as ‘legal highs’ which are now actually illegal…) or drug paraphernalia is allowed on site, except when medically prescribed. Anyone found in possession of drugs or suspected to be under the influence of drugs will be evicted from the site and be denied further entry to the event. Any such incidents will be reported to and dealt with by our site management team and the police representatives on site. 4. No speeding. When you arrive and leave the site please honour the 10mph limit. We know it’s slow but it helps keep people alive so that’s a good enough reason to stick to it. No driving lessons are allowed either. 5. When you’ve unloaded your tent and bags etc please take your car to one of the designated car parks so we can comply with official Fire and Safety regulations. The only cars allowed on site are emergency vehicles or ones with a valid disabled badge. 6. Wristbands must be worn (around your wrist!) at all times and they are the only way to get access into the venues. There is a £1

charge for a broken wristband and £40 to replace a lost one – pop to Info for assistance. 7. Smoking is not allowed inside any of the buildings, marquees or individual tents and caravans. 8. Please respect other people’s privacy and don’t take any photos/video footage during ministry times. We make sure our photographers and videographers stick to this rule too. 9. The Stafford Showground has some very pretty areas so please respect the showground’s property; no flyposting is allowed, and please don’t go into any areas cordoned off with tape. 10. Blue 1 is a designated quiet village so please be respectful of people camping there and don’t make any noise after 11pm so they can catch some zzzzzs. 11. If you want to move your tent or caravan to a different village please speak to your village host first to let them know. This is essential so you can be contacted in the case of an emergency. 12. The only pets allowed on site are registered assistance dogs (please come to Info on arrival if you have an assistance dog). 13. Generators cannot be used on site. If you need a power supply, please speak to Info. Electrical hook-ups can be provided in certain conditions and for a fee. 14. Open fires, fireworks and Chinese lanterns may be pretty but unfortunately they are not allowed on the showground.

PAGE 75

15. We know they’re really trendy but please don’t wear a hi-vis jacket unless you’re part of the Momentum team. 16. We want to make it clear that we won’t allow sectarian propaganda or proselytising within the Christian fellowship. This means any individual or group that uses Momentum and its facilities for such purposes does so against the spirit of the event. We reserve the right to cancel any such person or group’s booking and escort them off the site at once. If you think someone is trying to force their views on you and others, please let us know immediately by coming to Info so we can deal with the situation. 17. Promotion of organisations or activities that do not form part of the Momentum event programme, including the distribution of literature, is only permitted by authorised exhibitors within the ToolShed. 18. We don’t operate holiday insurance or cancellation schemes so please consult with an insurance broker if you need cover. We cannot be held responsible for loss or damage to people or personal property so please be careful! 19. Drones are not to be used on site, except by the official Soul Survivor media team.

Thanks for reading all the rules – award yourself a little lie down in the sun for all your hard work.
