SILENT ROOM Site and Context Laboratory of Immediate Architectural Intervention at Ume책 School of Architecture

Our school is designed as a big open space, where sound finds its way everywhere. There is a lot of activites going on at the same time - lecture in the auditorium, wood workshop just around the corner, presentation in a seminar room, tutorial in the computer room, students working on their computers in the studio, someone playing loud music from speakers. One can often feel overwhelmed by the noise that an architecture school can produce. THE SILENT ROOM should provide a place of quietness and intimacy in this chaotic space. Resting on the existing structure of steel beams, it will be a floating quiet gift to the school and it will not occupy or interfere with any of the existing floor-areas.

SILENT ROOM Conditions and Constraints Laboratory of Immediate Architectural Intervention at Umeå School of Architecture

In the framework of a collaboration with Martinsons Group AB, and in order to improve the existing room facilities at UMA, the integrated technology and design workshop focused on the development of a soundproof seminar room: a silent room. The design has to be capable of affording the necessary comfort for a room of such conditions (i.e. temperature, air renewal) as well as optimal structural stability and economy. The proposal must also ensure ease of constructions: the room will be built within a week in a follow-up workshop in May 2014.

30 m2

Seminar room with a capacity of 25 people raised 2.4 m above the floor

The idea is to add a class room inside the school of Architecture without blocking any of the existing floor area. Therefore it will be situated within one of the double height spaces in the building.

Structural support resting on the existing steel beams

The structural support may not alter or damage any part of the existing structure in the building. It will rest on, and span between, the existing beams in the space.

Silence and Intimacy

The Silent Room has to offer an intimate atmosphere that also is protected from the noise caused by other activities inside the building. Here you should be able to have a private discussion or sit and read in silence.

Natural Ventilation

Mechanical equipment can not be used for this project, hence the space has to be naturally ventilated through openings, without letting noise in.

Daylight and artificial lighting

The Silent Room should make use of the existing light sources without using any other material than wood and still it’s acoustic performance has to remain.

3 m3 of glue laminated timber and 20 000 SEK for plywood boards etc.

Martinsons Group AB are going to supply three cubic metres of glue laminated timber beams and in addion to that there is a budget of 20 000 SEK to purchase plywood boards, screws and other material that is needed for the construction. The design must also be conceived in order to optimize the use of materials.

Ceiling The ceiling system is made by forty two wooden boxes filled with saw dust in order to acoustically insulate the inner space. Each piece is obtained by plywood boards of 8 mm thickness and 240 cm lenght and they are supported by the beneath beams structure. The distance of aproximately 2 cm in between them allows a really soft light to come in and enlight the enviroment.

Windows In order to enlighten the seminar room, the south elevation is defined by two volumes framing two already existing windows. The indoor space's plan looses its really stiff symmetry and a high wooden wall allows projection of presentations.

Lsap studio The silent is suspended at 240 cm from the lower floor. In so doing it creates a more cosy and protected environment space for LSAP studio beneath.

Walls The main truss has to be built on site. The assembly of the different parts will be realized using plywood boards as second structure to merge the different sections and distribute the load to the main truss.
