Rogan

, the art of colours is an age old tradition followed by the Khatri family. From generations to generations this family from Nirona,Kutch has helped this art to expand and reach to the mass. From a traditional art in a small village of Guajart to being recognised Internationally, all the credit goes to the amazing artisans of the Khatri family. Here are ten members of Khatri family who are still practicing the Rogan Art. One very important part of Rogan is it’s motifs, turn through the pages to explore the different motifs and designs of Rogan Art and how they have also evolved through generations


Khatri Arab Hasam He has practised Rogan art for almost 53 years and have won state award in 1991 and National merit certificate in 2006-07.


Tree Of Life (Kalpvrusha)

Tree of life is the sacred tree in religious and philosophical traditions. The tree of life connects the world to the heaven and underworld and also to all forms of creation. Tree of life can be seen in different kinds of architectural designs and is a very famous motif for carpets and clothing.


Mandala

Mandala is a religious or spiritual symbol with circular symmetry. It is mainly formed by ornamented concentric circles around a main symbol in the centre. It represents the wholeness and structure of life. Mandalas are often used as decorations; one such example is the Rangoli .


Abdulgafur Daud Katri

He is the Rogan Art artist from last 38 years and has won many awards for his unbelievable work in this craft, including District award in 1987, National merit in 1990 and National award in 1997. He was recently honoured with the prestigious Padma Shri.


Jumma Daud Khatri

He is practising this art from the last 28 years and have learnt it from Gafur Bhai Khatri.


Tree Of Life (Kalpvrusha) The Khatri family used this motif from a very long time in their designs, from being a part in the overall design to being their most popular motif, they have worked and improved the aesthetics and feel of this motif through their generations.


Peacock (Mor) Peacock is the one of the most beautiful birds. When these birds open their beautiful feathers, it is the sight to behold. Earlier the Rogan art design used to include scenes from the surroundings including the motifs of animals and birds. Peacock motifs were found in the oldest piece of the Rogan art but the motif was quite abstract. It is still one of the popular motifs and is also used at the centre of the tree of life design.The new peacock ismore realistic with more detailing..


Sumar Daud Khatri

He is practising this art from last 22 years and have won awards for his craft. He was presented with the State award in 2000 and National award in 2003.


Mohammad Hanif Arab Khatri He has been doing this craft from last 9 years and is exploring the art.


Tree Of Life (Kalpvrusha) Each member of Khatri family have their special style of making the Tree of life. Some of them have a center of attraction along with the Tree around it. Tree of life with peacock(mor) in the center is the latest addition to different types of trees of life.


Mandala The Mandala design is not a new one in the world of Rogan Art. You can find the old mandalas with thick strokes and easier designs along with new mandalas that are more intricate and with fine lines, in the Rogan records of Khatri family. Most of them are done for the old wall pieces or as a part of some bigger designs. .


Ashraf Daud Khatri He has been practising this last from the last 11 years, influenced by his other family members.


Mohammad Jabbar Arab Khatri

He has been doing this craft from last 9 years and is exploring the art.


Toran (Border) Borders are straight decorated lines placed on the edge of something. Indians use threads decorated with flowers, leaves and other ornamentation to decorate the doors of their houses and such threads are known as Torans in Gujarati.


Flowers (Phool) Flowers are the oldest way of ornamentation ever. Floral motifs are used in many old architecture, jewellery, clothing, accessories and other things, literally you can find it on anything and everything. In Rogan art the floral motif is used as a part of bigger designs, for e.g. many floral motifs are arranged together to form the tree of life or arranged in a straight line to form the borders.


Sahil Abdul Gafur Khatri He has been practising this last from the last 11 years, influenced by his other family members.


Abdulhamid Arab Khatri He is proud of what his family and their achievements in Rogan Art and he himself is also enthusiastic about the craft and believes in continuing it the future.


Tree Of Life (Kalpvrusha) In Rogan art the floral motif is used as a part of bigger designs, for e.g. many floral motifs are arranged together to form the tree of life or arranged in a straight line to form the borders.


Booti (Motif) Booti is the newest form of modification of the tree of life design. It is a small design of around 210*148 mm size. But unlike the usual tree of life it is not always symmetrical and its trunk is tilted towards a side with floral and leaf motifs on both its sides


Shakil Jumma Khatri He has been practising this last from the last 11 years, influenced by his other family members.
