"And she'll have fun, fun,fun 'til her Daddy takes the T-Bird awaaay!" I suspect that song was written just for Anne Marie Alberts, Dianne Dignam & Julie Neville. The following Membership Renewal had me laughing so hard that the tears ran down my legs.. Whoops! It read "My contact details remain the same as last year.. same house, same phone, same internet, same car & same WIFE" I trust she found it as funny as I did Mark! Opening up the renewal forms for this year was like a script from the Leyland Brothers, with our Members spread from Tasmania to Townsville and all points of the compass. Doug McCammon kindly gifted me a black leather Condotti attache case with combination locks to store the Club's paperwork. WoW! He didn't like the hot pink zip-up satchel I had. C'mon Doug it was only a little bit gay! Anyway I have re-gifted the generous gift of the Condotti to our new Treasurer Bill McGregor. My bitch for this month is the difference between the running of Car Shows. A. I attended a show on the Northside to be greeted gruffly by a chap who simply said "$10 Maate" followed by "Do ya wanna put ya car on display?" Given that I spent most of the previous day polishing her, I said Yes. "That's another $10 Maate." As they had $25 million of rare cars there free of charge, I thought it a bit off. Later I was told many car shows in the USA actually pay some owners to appear. B. Australia Day by the Bayside Vehicles Restorers Club at Ormiston. A cheerful & welcoming bunch delighted to have all & sundry arrive, even providing a FREE breakfast, 3 different scenic runs, a terrific Raffle and prizes for the various Marques in attendance. The attached snap of one of their members was taken (with his consent) which I call "Meals on Wheels". A wonderful day for all that attended. On that note please don't miss "Muscle on the Mountain" in Maleny on July 3rd. I have attended this event for 4 years and it grows by I guess 100 cars a year. Absolutely Massive & Marvellous! The food is supplied by local Community groups and the entry fee is a GOLD COIN donation for entrants and spectators alike. All proceeds go to Prostate Cancer Research (over $12,000 raised 2 years ago) and I reckon a $5 note is easier to put in the bucket. I am shocked to discover that Prostate Cancer kills more men, than Breast Cancer kills women. Check out our last magazine and find the photo of the Sabre jet with the "slice" across it's mouth at RAAF Amberley. 2 pilots went for a high speed low level hoon through a valley west of Sydney and this bloke hit a high tension electricity cable that wiped out power in the region for several days. I will find a prize for the person who comes up with the funniest comment for that adventure. Our raffle prizes are building up on my dining table which indicates we need to hold one soon.. Large canvas print of a T-Bird, AC/DC T-shirts, Hawaiian shirt, rare US Nascar T-Bird race car T-shirt, synthetic chamois', Ford shirt, 2 steel gents bracelet quartz watches with T-bird and Ford logo on the dial. Contrary to Max Herbert's dig at me suggesting I was a "tight arse" and only paid $5 for them, they did cost considerably more. Max went on to say he bought a main meal of Mi Goreng in Bali for $1.75. Will he now take his cruel comment back? Haha Don't miss this ONE.. Neill Ford our Club member has very generously and kindly offered us an invitation to attend a major Polo event (The Infiniti Cup) at his spectacular complex on August 28. We are able to have 3 Gazebos and up to 12 cars and that is the limit, so don't hesitate. A few of us were fortunate enough to view games on Mother's Day and the sight of the agility of those GG's was memorable. Please have a look at the Alsace Polo website www.alsacepolo.net.au it explains the rules of the game, the building of the complex and more. You will be impressed I can assure. Neill even suggested Julia Roberts (Pretty Woman) may appear to stamp down the divots, so you can see why I won't miss it for the world. Since this is a charity event we have been asked to make a donation to the Aussie Kidz Charity fund which we will also match with a donation from our club funds...
By now you will all know that the printed edition of our club magazine has come to and end. Merron accompanied me in my Cobra to make a presentation to Jill Fechner for the marvellous work she has done over a number years to print "Sounds of Thunder" for us. For her we put together a bottle of 2013 Pinot Noir Chardonnay, a Coles group Gift Voucher and a box of yummy chocolates. Thank you Jill. Also a big thank you to Tony Lake who works with Jill at AMTAC for making it all possible.
I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome our new members to the club. Roy and Iris Bish 1964 Thunderbird Hardtop, Steve and Laura Tate 1964 Thunderbird Landau and Greg and Doreen Coultis 66 Thunderbird Town Hardtop. We look forward to seeing you on a club run soon. Don’t be shy there’s plenty on.. Two TRUE stories to finish off: Come on would I lie to you?? 1. I attended a large Swap meet covering 2 football ovals at Carina recently with Bill McGregor attending also. The swapper next to me asked if I had a particular device that he needed, either to borrow or even to buy. Sadly mine was in my shed. He walked and spoke to everyone single person at the meet (maybe 200) and no-one could assist. And what was the device? Jumper leads..!!! 2. A member's wife was pulled over by a Highway Patrol and the Policewoman driver came to the window and said "I am about to give you a ticket for smoking with a child in the car" Go ahead said the driver. Perplexed the Officer asked why she was so agreeable and the driver said "It is an almost life size plastic Barbie doll (that resembles a 7 year old) and my friends give me clothes to dress her" May the 'Birds fly.. Hi All, Just introducing my 1962 Thunderbird Sports Roadster. After an 18 month search I bought the car in February 2016. I'm the 3rd owner in 54 years. The car has an interesting history. It's was given as a graduation gift in 1962 WOW!! I can only imagine the car was of great importance to the recipient as he kept the car for his entire life. After his death it was put up for sale in a Minnesota dealership by his brother. It was bought in 1997 with 90,000 miles on the clock by an Aussie currently living in Houston, Texas. The new owner had the car shipped back to Melbourne where he under took an 8 month restoration of the motor, transmission, along with a professional seamless right hand drive conversion as he wanted the car to be a practical fun car drive and enjoy with the family. A few months after getting the car back from restoration in late 1998 the he was enticed back to Houston for work leaving the car in Australia where it was used for holidays etc. From 1998 through to 2016 the car was driven just 3,000 miles. The car is mostly original, excluding RHD conversation, engine and engine bay refresh and new roof put on in 1998. All exterior paint and trim is untouched etc. I have a lot to learn about it and look forward to getting grease under my fingernails and of course cruising around beautiful Queensland‌ Cheers Robert Taylor

Mothers Day Run Alsace Polo Veresdale
There was some concern at the monthly meeting on the Friday night regarding the run being held on Mother's Day to the Veresdale Hotel.. An inquiry with the hotel made late in the week, informed us that they were totally booked out. Prior to the Friday night meeting the club had been invited by club member Neill Ford to visit his property Alsace Polo which is in the same area to watch some Polo and possibly inspect his work shop with a 1962 Sports Roadster project in progress. The run was discussed and we decided to visit the Polo event and then proceed to Boonah for lunch winging it to find a suitable place. We also had some concern as to the attendance but felt we would get the usual crew. Thanks to Jim and Marjorie Stack and Jim Hall for coming along making a pleasant addition to the regulars. The run certainly created some confusion with road names and wayward GPS directions but after two about turns and a scout run close by we found the spot. No more to be discussed on that point thank you all?
What a great venue Neill and Trisha Ford have.. a first class Polo location 5 star you might say. Parking was in special location due to the possibility of wondering balls from the game and of course the pristine grass field. What more could you say about the surroundings they were wonderful to say the least and as you can imagine the spectacle of the horses and riders in action on the playing field topped it off. Shortly after arrival Neill confirmed about a trip up the hill you might say to his work shop area showing a restoration happening on his 1962 Thunderbird convertible along with two other donor cars. As the hours progressed the plan to continue to Boonah was shelved...
We decided to stay put because the facilities had a small snack bar with coffee, drinks and snacks. The afternoon was certainly a great experience if you hadn’t watched a polo match before, the brilliant weather making it only better.
After seeing the trophy presentation Neill changed and ferried the members wanting to see the workshop facility up the hill however Ted the man drove his Cobra. It was a joy to see a workshop with so many trinkets and projects underway along with the stunning views into the valley. Plenty of things to see as well along with some other nice toys parked up at the weekend residence.
During the course of the day we also had discussion with Neill about the August 21st Infiniti Cup event happening at Alsace which we have made a tentative booking for and had allocated an area for three gazebos and twelve cars. Details to follow.. The day concluded about 2.30pm due to the members present having other Mother’s Day commitments to attend to. It was certainly an enjoyable day with nice company. Special thanks to Neill Ford for the invite and also for the surprise attendance of Jim Hall. Run attended by Bill & Lyn Flanagan, Tony Lake, Ray, Qui Qui and Asi Tyndall, Jim and Marjorie Stack, Merron and Dennis, Ted, Jim Hall. Until next time.. Sandra and Doug.
Fun Ford Y Block Fact... In the Disney-Pixar movie, "Cars" the lights on the top of Flo's V-8 Cafe blink in the same firing order as the Y-Block and Flathead Ford V8.
ODDS and ENDS
Long forgotten, five years of distinguished style make these Thunderbirds a worthwhile alternative to the more popular earlier models
Big and bold, with a distinctive beauty all their own, the so-called Glamour Birds were, without question, the most uniquely styled automobiles to come out of Detroit for the 1967 model year. With their full-width grille and taillamp openings, slender profile and elegantly shaped C-pillar, these new Thunderbirds were unlike any car that came before. Offering an upscale motoring experience for the masses, they instantly captured the public's attention. Today, after decades of languishing unappreciated on the big collector-car parking lot, these smartly styled cars have begun to be looked at with renewed interest by enthusiasts. And rightly so: They offer stand apart from the crowd styling, rugged and reliable mechanicals, a comfortable ride and reassuring road-holding abilities. And all at a price that is very affordable. A better entry into the wonderful world of collector car ownership just can't be found. But you better be quick because that is changing rapidly.
With the introduction of an all-new redesigned body, the four-door Thunderbirds now featured Lincoln Continental styled rear hinged doors for the rear seat passengers. With the inclusion of elegantly shaped S-bars on the C-pillar, the door gap was cleverly hidden from view, thus lending the exterior a very smooth, flowing appearance. This was also the first year that no convertible Thunderbird was offered, and the last year for the old 390-cu.in. FE V-8. The 345hp Thunder Jet 429-cu.in. V-8 was made optional, and backed up the car's new sporty appearance.
Although it may look identical to the 1967 model, Thunderbird aficionados consider these the best of the bunch. They combined the clean lines of the first-year model with many upgraded mechanical parts. The 390cu.in. V-8 was standard until January 1, 1968, when it was superseded by the 345hp Thunder Jet 429-cu.in. V-8. No longer were bucket seats and the Tilt-Away steering wheel standard, having been pushed onto the option list. Because these second-year models share most mechanical components with the 1969-'71 models, they are cheaper to rebuild and maintain.
Sporting what was essentially the same exterior as the 1967-'68 model, for the first time a power sunroof was made optional and it was quite large, too. Along with restyled wheel covers and a new grille emblem, the most noticeable exterior change was the redesigned split tail lamps. Under the hood resided the same 360hp 429-cu.in. Thunder Jet V-8, which was now the only engine available. With a production run that was substantially lower than that of the first two years, these are among the rarest Glamour Birds, but that doesn't mean that they are the most collectible.
To help increase sales over the previous year's downturn in production, an exterior redesign from the windshield forward incorporated a new pointed front end. It worked, as sales increased--but only by a little more than 6,400 units. The pronounced beak was inclusive of the hood, bumper and grille, making for a very unique look. But as different as it was, the Glamour Bird started losing some of its glamour. Yet because this was the first year of a two-year-only design, many enthusiasts prefer its sporty appearance to the previous, more elegant form. The powertrain remained the same.
1970 Tudor Landau with Special Brougham Package
1970 Fordor Landau
Not much changed for the Glamour Bird's final year of production. With the lowest sales of the five-yearlong run, it was time for a major upgrade. Apart from the Tudor Landau pictured below that returned to the formal styled blind roof quarters as in 1969 the body was the same as the 1970 model, with a few very minor tweaks made to the grille and bumper; the front side marker lamps now consisted of a onepiece lens. These last-year models are considered by Thunderbird experts to be the best-built versions of them all; they even featured modern printed circuit boards to run the instruments. If ever there was a well-built collector car available for little money, this is it.

FINE IRON ROD and CUSTOM CLUB SHOW
Another beautiful Queensland Autumn day set the scene for the 22nd Annual Fine Iron Rod and Custom Club Show and Swap Meet. A turn out of over 500 cars and bikes making this a popular show to attend by local car enthusiasts. The show ends around 1pm culminating in a massive cruise around the Ipswich area. We managed a small group of regulars from the Thunderbird club but still enjoyed participating in the event.. Great to see Terry and Lynn made the trip up from the Gold Coast in their sweet 62 Hardtop. Sorry guys saw you arrive but didn’t bump into you.. On top of the success of their annual show the Fine Iron club won best club display at the Queensland Hot Rod Show over the weekend of 21st and 22nd of May Here are a few snaps from the day. We’ll be back again next year for sure. Johnny
Cooly Rocks on was simply awesome with Classics that had my drooling tongue dragging on the ground all day.. Johnny's photos are on TOQ Facebook, so don't miss them. I took only 2 photos of a D type Jaguar (beautifully recreated - indistinct from an original) which I would often see parked on the forecourt of the Ampol garage on the main drag in the 1960's. It belonged to Jack Davey the radio King who was sponsored by Ampol and he had the use of the Unit above their Office. Imagine driving that up from Sydney?
I also saw a green 1970 Chevy Impala displayed outside the Seibel apartment block and thought that must be the Ralph's, but wait.. it was far too quiet! Tee Hee. We had a fantastic club get together at Flames Restaurant Twin Towns for lunch on the Saturday. Great to meet some of the folk from the Jets Classic and Custom Car Club up from Melbourne no doubt enjoying the event and our warmer weather. We had a good group of members present.. Neill & Trisha Ford, Stewart and Joanne Harvey, Shane and Janelle Gilchrist, Leon Bray, Rick and Gail, Doug & Sandra, Darryl and Mindy, Johnny, Bill, James and Marjorie Stack, Merron her friend and Dennis, Bill & Lyn Flanagan a visit from Ron and Barb and of course Merle and Myself.. Cheers Ted
