On the cover.. TOQ Facebook group member Andrew Brown from Plano, Texas owns this stunning mildly customised ‘56 Thunderbird. Andrew was thrilled at the opportunity to share his Thunderbird with our club members. Read all about this car and a couple of other cool Fords he owns inside.

Hello one and all! ..and what an event packed time we have had since my last report. Muscle on the Mountain.. I have a philosophy when I see a car really badly parked, I can guarantee it is driven by a MALE driver- aged between 17 & 35.! When our club members congregated at the Shell Nudgee Roadhouse my worst fears became reality. 24 vehicles (4 of them ours) parked under the long carport and we walked out to find 5 "Rice Burners" (I thought only Orange juice came in 2 Litres?) parked down the middle successfully blocking in 29 vehicles, all because the last idiot went off to buy a frozen Coke and got lost. Aaaaargh! I wimped out of driving my Cobra after last year when my passenger Merle almost died of hypothermia, if not for the blanket kindly provided by Merron. Instead my son offered me a Black Pack supercharged Boss FG GT Falcon with 400 BHP at the rear wheels! How could I refuse? Sadly because of roadworks and heavy traffic I was limited to travel at between 40kmh and only 80kmh in both directions. BooHoo. Kevin & Nathan Miller, Graham Luxford, Merron & Dennis, Sandra & Doug, Karin & Craig, David & Julie, Fiona & Damian, Wendy & Geoff, Ali & Ray, Elia & Jason, Lyn & Bill along with myself had a really fun day as this event always provides. Geoff Crawhall & I had a discussion regarding club runs north of the city and Geoff suggested a weekend run to Gympie, an old Gold mining town. Book into a country pub for Saturday night to eat, drink & be merry then explore the surrounding region. It’s food for thought!

All Ford Day.. Saturday evening before the All Ford Day at Willowbank, the heavens opened up over Brisbane and when it rains here, it really rains. I was asked to head up the run out there and someone suggested I leave my Cobra (no roof) in the shed and take my HSV R8. Oh really to the All Ford Day? Come now. The Miller boys, Graham Luxford and I braved the elements which didn't deter the GT guys as they all turned up in droves, as usual. We watched a Mustang race car on a mobile dyno bouncing off the rev limiter, why ever do they do that to cars, when the cars didn't do anything to them? I expressed my concerns for the safety of people standing in front of it, behind a cyclone wire fence for protection, should it break loose. Kevin assured me it would simply stall. I am not convinced after I watched a Youtube clip "Mustang explodes tire on dyno @ 150mph" Check it out and tell me what you think?

One wag asked if our Fords were "customised" Thunderbirds??

We have had a number of membership inquiries over the last month or so and of that we have had two new members join our club. I’d like to Welcome Peter Eade from Townsville who is building an XW Falcon Utility. Peter has friends in Townsville that are already members of TOQ. Welcome also to Noor Deen. Noor is the proud owner of a 1963 Thunderbird Sports Roadster. Noor’s car is a genuine M Code (tripower) car one of only 24 still known to exist from the original 37 units built for 1963. We look forward to seeing that very rare bird on a club run soon. Below a sneek peek of Noor’s Roadster in the garage parked next to his MKII Continental..

A Tale of 2 Black Birds.. Johnny was telling me recently about his first ever Thunderbird purchase, which was a Black 1/18 scale model 1956 Thunderbird. He purchased it from a shop called "Rock'n'Roll Revhead" in Camp Hill in 1995 over 20 years ago. Believe it or not I actually owned that shop! ..which proves that fact is stranger than fiction. Graham Aston has a full size one which he purchased by accident, when he was searching for a 1940 Ford convertible which I googled and found are very thin on the ground. He found himself in a car museum in St Louis and promptly fell in love with his Black 1956 Bird, which lives on the Gold Coast and is now for sale. He entertained me with another story that he and his lovely late wife Wendy lived across a canal at Runaway Bay and noticed a grand mansion for sale across the water. Graham (who was on crutches at the time) said he was off for a "hobble" and returned some time later to inform Wendy that they now owned that palatial abode. You funny boy Graham, I would have never got away with that, in any of my many marriages! I’m off for 3 weeks holiday to Bali.. So I won’t be around but there is lots on so get out with the club and enjoy the upcoming spring weather in those lovely cars with club friends of like mind... Cheers Ted El Presidente

Vale Joseph Adcock Sadly, in June one of our club members Joe Adcock passed away. Joe had not that long ago purchased a 1963 Thunderbird Hardtop joined the club and had been busy restoring the car of his dreams. Two honour Joe at his funeral the family took on the mammoth task of getting the car on the road . Joe’s nephew Mick headed the project with help from his father Damian and support from other friends and businesses. Mick had this to share with family and friends.. Over the past 2 weeks, I took on the most meaningful project I will ever take on. Uncle Joe owned a 1963 Ford Thunderbird which he had been slowly restoring. After hearing of Joe's passing, I felt the need to drive this project car to his funeral. The last few weeks have been so mentally and physically draining. I was working 12-14 hour days, going home to sleep then wake up and do it all again the next day. All of this, to finish "Joe's dream". None of this could have been done without my biggest supporter Damian Adcock. There were days where I wanted to quit, and give up with it all. But dad was the one who kept me with it. No matter what obstacle we faced, dad managed to find a way past it. I may never truly know the reaction my Uncle Joe would of had, but seeing the smiles, laughs and pure happiness from family and friends today meant the absolute world to me. This project has been one of the biggest privileges in my life, right next to representing our country for hockey. I will never forget the tears, joy and pride that has come from semi-completing "Joe's dream". I would love to have the chance to complete this project and take my dad for a cruise one day. Finally, I want to thank everyone who has donated, shared & given words of support. Without everyone's support, "Joe's dream" would not be at the stage it is today. A HUGE special mention to Slacks Creek Brake & Clutch, Snap on tools, GTS Concreting & Action Automotive. Without these heroes, this dream would not have even driven onto a tow truck. Here's a photo of Joe's very loved car, alongside his very well maintained, also loved, garden feature. Rest easy Uncle Joe. May you ride the heavens endlessly. Take care of Ma & Pa. We will never forget you mate. Never ending love. Ride on Shorty

Recently while patrolling around Coolum.. Club member “Sheriff” Phil Cutter pulled over this 631/2 Galaxie Hardtop. Not for any other reason but just to get a closer look and have a chin wag.. LOL

Ahoy there! I’m the Captain of this rig.... Rick and Gail enjoying the club run for lunch to the Redland Bay Pub..

ODDS and ENDS

After the 1963 model year Ford did not offer a dedicated Sports Roadster model. They did however give dealers the ability to option a T-Bird Convertible out like one (Minus the passenger grab bar and emblems). By simply adding a Tonneau Cover, Kelsey Hayes wire wheels to the options list, (which deleted the fender skirts) you got an unofficial Roadster convertible. Not many were ordered from the factory this way, and beginning in the 1965 model year you could no longer order one this way. The tonneau cover was simply deleted from the options list (though you could buy one as a Ford Accessory over the counter), and due to the wire wheels not clearing the newly standard for 65 Disc Brakes, these were deleted from the options list as well. This one came from California, it has been re-painted at some point, it has almost every option available for 64 (was only missing the new for 64 Cruise Control), though it is missing the correct size heavy duty battery it was optioned with. It has two Ford Accessories, a right side mirror, and a spotlight. Despite a few minor details, this car is in great shape...

Thunderbird Registry Number: 897 Owner: Rocky Edwards VIN: 4Y85Z170378 Codes: 76A - P - 89 - 10D - 71 - 1 - 4 Comments: This 1964 Thunderbird Convertible was scheduled for production on April 10, 1964 and was ordered by McTaggart Motors, 2001 Blossom Street, Dos Palos, California (Los Angeles District Sales Office Region - 71). It has a base price of $4,953 and has the following optional equipment: Leather Bolsters & Inserts - $106.20, Tonneau Cover - $269.00, 8.00 x 14 White Wall Tires $42.10, Safety Convenience Control Panel - $45.10, Power Lift Windows - $106.20, Power Seat Driver & Passenger - $184.10, Reclining Seat & Headrest - $38.60, SelectAire Conditioner - $415.10, Rear Seat Radio Speaker - $15.50, Tinted Glass - $43.00, Closed Emission System (for California) $5.30, Transistorized Ignition System- $51.50, Heavy Duty Battery - $7.60, and Wire Wheels $373.10. The total sticker price including $183.00 for delivery was $6,838.40 --- UPDATE Robert O'Connor says: My nephew photographed this car recently at a car show. The car is registered in Massachusetts, it appears to have been re-painted in the last couple years, in it's original Prairie Bronze hue. Really a clean looking car, needing very little to be perfect, most noticeable to my nephew was it didn't have the correct size heavy duty battery it was optioned with (should be a 27F, but the car had the standard 29NF battery). It also has accessory spot lamp, it has the standard tall mirror with matching passenger mirror.

AND WEST THEY WENT‌

Twelve intrepid Clubbies braved the almost zero temperature to head out to Laidley 100 kms West of Brisbane for the Sunday activities of the Laidley Chrome and Clutter Retro Festival Julie & Cossie (Torino) Nathan & Kevin (59 Chev) Merron & Dennis (84 Chev Van) Carol & Max (46 Ford Rod) Karin & Craig (63 Thunderbird) with Doug (63 Thunderbird) and myself in a Cobra flying solo. The 100 kms run out there was in perfect formation with no mechanical issues, 3 cars apart and travelling at 10kmh under the speed limit, so as not to impede fellow road users. Top marks guys! Then the fun started! The car show was actually held on the previous night, the swap meet had 3 stall holders and the locals had tables of clutter down the main street. They say when you are presented with lemons you make lemonade, so we decided to follow Kevin the back way to Rod's Diner at Gatton. I am sure I saw a sign saying Perth 15 kms along the way Kevin? We arrived minutes before the Harley Owners Group arrived to occupy almost the entire Diner on Reserved tables, however the owners very kindly made room for us.

Carol & Karin ordered "Californian Pancakes" that were a double stack stuffed with fruit salad, smothered in whipped cream, topped with berries and 2 huge scoops of ice-cream skewered with a bamboo stake. It was almost 30cm high..! What arrived however was something similar (without the berries) and stuffed with BACON RASHERS. Yes you did read that correctly. It turns out they were "Canadian Pancakes" which Max Herbert explained was a very long way from California.

We then headed off to Fernvale to a park opposite the Bakery, where we had the funniest of conversations over a couple of hours, that you could possibly imagine. You just had to be there! I also discovered Karin & Craig must have hollow legs as they were each able to put away a delicious pie. No dinner required that night guys? Oh, on the food story I mentioned the club BBQ at my place on August 14th and Max Herbert then boldly declared he only eats Porterhouse Steak. Oh really Max, have you heard of BYO? LOL We had a good run back to BrisVegas. As approached home I stopped by the local Bottle shop just as two young blokes walked out. Seeing me alight from my Cobra one said "That bloke will be a Rum drinker for sure, no Light Beer or cocktails with umbrellas stuck in them for him" I apologised and told them I was getting a 4 litre Cask of "goon" or Chateau de Cardboard as I call it. The poor kids are now scarred for life... Sorry lads? Cheers Ted

TEXAN TBIRD On our club Facebook you meet great people from all over the world with a passion for their Thunderbirds and Fords, you certainly see some beautiful cars, original, restored and modified. Every now and then one just knocks you for a six as is the case with Andrew Brown’s mildly customised 56 Thunderbird. Andrew is from Plano, Texas and is a member of our group along with a number of other Thunderbird related groups I frequent. Not only does Andrew have this super smooth ‘56 Thunderbird but also a couple of other neat Fords he’d like to share. Enjoy the story he wrote and photos of his cars he kindly sent with me for our magazine.

I'd long been a fan of the early 'Birds done mild custom; kept a search up about 10 years, when a friend gave me a lead on one in Colorado in 2009. After calling and finding out the car was green, I almost passed it up...The car was built new as green and turns out a low number of cars were built green in 56.. The owner and I negotiated a bit and a deal was made. Some paperwork and research the previous owner had passed along showed the car was originally owned by a state trooper in Florida. He reportedly passed away in the line of duty and the car sat for a while. Then it changed hands a number of times and ended up in Colorado. As I learned more about the early Thunderbirds, the colour really grew on me and I had visions that the right stance and wheels would set it off nicely.. patience.

Bringing the car home to Texas, it was a project as many things were partly done and needed finishing up even to be roadworthy. The car had received a 5.0 EFI motor and AOD transmission install by the previous owner, which suited me fine as I planned to drive the car quite a bit. First off, the interior refresh was made with new carpet, seat foam and proper green and cream upholstery, and a vintage European banjo steering wheel.

Researching wheels, I called up PS Engineering in California. Phil Schmidt (PS) made some nice wheels such as those on the Eleanor Mustangs. I choose a nice Kidney Bean wheel for a vintage look and had a custom staggered set made in 17" diameter.

After enjoying the car several years and many shows and cruises, it was time for a repaint. There was no corrosion to deal with, but the finish was checked and cracked from age. The car was sent to Williams Paint and Body in Mesquite, TX. We used the same colour as was on the car; which not quite the exact shade of Ford Thunderbird Green, maybe a bit brighter and less olive in tone. The car was converted to a '55 straight rear bumper, and the '56 bumper is saved away with all the pieces, mounts and

The stance was nice on modified coil springs, but I planned on a full AirRide suspension for the car, and installed that later in 2013. CoolRide bags up front and ShockWaves in the rear made a nice package. Sitting down it really looked the part. The ride quality was very much improved, handling stability as well, and being able to fine tune the rear for variety of luggage or road trips with hardtop installed was another benefit. The car has a Vintage Air HVAC system behind the dash; a 5.0L EFI motor, GT40 intake, cast Explorer exhaust manifolds, 2 1/4" custom built dual exhaust with MagnaFlow mufflers, Bfg KDW2 tires, a hidden audio system, power steering, and originally equipped and functional power bench seat and power windows. It's a very comfortable road car, around town, strong on the highway and just a lot of fun. Very lucky to have found this one and enjoying the drive! Here are two other cars of mine.. Enjoy.. Andrew Brown

1961 Econoline Pick Up The 1961 Ford Econoline 5 window is equipped w/ a big six, auto trans, and 17" American Racing wheels. It was built in Washington State and is quite a fun drive, being cabover configuration. The Econoline is up for sale, BTW.

63 Falcon 2 Door Sedan This car was a Craigslist find, I couldn't pass it up. A geologist up in Oklahoma bought it as it sits, enjoyed a while and put it up for sale. He had bought the car from someone in California, where it was built. Some features of the California build: The motor is 351 Windsor power, Astro built A-5 Five Speed Transmission behind a scatter proof bellhousing, Chris Alstom Chassisworks II coil over front suspension, ladder bars and coil overs in the rear. The interior is refinished in OEM materials, bench seat and stock steering wheel, and the rolling stock are Wheel Vintiques steel wheels and '49 Ford hub caps.

This view of Andrew’s 56 shows just how right Ford got it with the design of the first series of Thunderbirds.. The lower stance, his tyre and wheel combination and clean look only accentuate the beauty of this car’s body style. Thank you Andrew for sharing your cars with our club.

ALL AMERICAN CAR SHOW The 2016 All American Car Show was held at Rocklea Showgrounds on 17th July BUT! Due to the All Ford Day and several other "ALL ??? car " displays and shows being scheduled in for the same date and that combined with a previous day of shocking weather and non-too promising looking sky on the morning of the show, it was not all that well attended‌

Plenty of GM product was amongst the 80 or so cars on display ranging through most yrs 30's - 80's , but chances of finding a plentiful display of Fords was plenty slim. A small number of our Ford marque was scattered through the 3 or 4 rows of cars , most notable for me was an excellent "new kid in town" 1957 Fairlane 4 door hardtop driven and displayed by Wayne Barbour. Brian Lambruegin (SP??) had his fantastic 53/4 Kustom Mercury hardtop sitting on the grass looking way kewl..... also a very nice, super clean 66 Mustang Fastback with a sweet interior and list of accessories set a very high standard.

Inside a group of dedicated dancers bopped to the music , and a large SLOT CAR track attracted a good crowd of would be racers. A small number of traders showed their wares, but unfortunately the crowd was not all that big, due to the pretty terrible weather from the day before and the dark sky on the morning of the gig .... I’m sure it was enthusiastically attended but numbers were disappointing…. Let’s hope for better weather and a date that doesn’t clash with so many other destinations next year… Cheers Rick Lowe

Thank you Rick for the story and photos.. This is Rick’s 1964 Mercury Comet Caliente

GreazeFest moved to the new venue at Cleveland Showgrounds this year..

And it was a hit with 2 huge days and

nights of great music, hep cats, cool rides, low brow art and vintage markets. Here is just a taste of what was‌

President Ted’s BBQ and Mega Raffle What a spectacular day we enjoyed with typical Queensland weather as visitors always expect in this State. A cloudless blue sky with the air filled with the crackling sound of V8 muscle machines! Who could ask for anything more? 49 people arrived, along with a one year old baby girl and the day was an absolute ripper. It quickly became the Comedy Car Club again as some of you are just naughty, wicked, irreverent, deviates which is why I enjoy your company so much. My sincere thanks and gratitude to all (too numerous to mention) who donated prizes for our Mega Raffle, supplied a BBQ, sound system, hot water Urn, made delectable sweets, brought chairs and assisted me with cooking, doing the Raffle and tidying after afterwards. I could not have done it without your help. Within an hour the only evidence that remained that a party had taken place, was my eyes hanging out of their sockets. Haha. Thank heavens I had 4 litres of "Poppy Juice" in my fridge. Oh and the Cupo family's tyre smoke from his 482 cubic inch big block '63 red Tbird. You see we have a lunatic up the road from us, who does fly by on most weekends in his $980,000 Lamborghini roadster, which was featured on A Current Affair recently. He bounces it off the rev limiter in 2nd or 3rd gear and we reckon he gets up to 160kmh in our 60kmh zone. The Cupo's did TWO runs past my house and believe me it was effen AWESOME to say the least. I will take that Bird any day, anyway, anywhere! I will also phone A Current Affair the next time they come to visit, OK? That’s Rob’ 63 below.. It’s one mean ride..

Our front yard looked like a Classic Car Collectors Great to meet newer members Doug and Lois with their 57 Heaven and didn't go unnoticed by all of my neighbours, nor the Tax Office who now want my explanation as to how a silver haired Pensioner owns so many great muscle cars. Thanks a lot guys. I am not sure how we can better the "Barbie" at our next Social Function, which will be the Xmas party on November 20 at Carina Leagues Club, but we will give it a damn good shot. Thank you all again, for being you! Ted Stocks.. El Presidente
