Dallas Executive Airport Prepares for the Future One of Dallas’ most prized assets is about to become even more valuable. Dallas Executive Airport, the city-owned, national reliever airport in Southern Dallas, is undergoing a master planning process to identify ways for it to overcome its challenges and to maximize its potential. Concurrently, various infrastructure improvement projects are also being undertaken. Dallas Executive Airport is one of the 84 national reliever airports that support operations by the most sophisticated aircraft in the general aviation fleet. Many flights are by jet aircraft, including corporate and fractional ownership operations and air taxi services. These airports are located in metropolitan areas near major business centers and support flying throughout the nation and the world. National airports are currently located within 31 states. These airports also provide pilots with an alternative to busy primary commercial service airports. Dallas Executive Airport occupies 1,040 acres of land with two concrete runways. It is fully equipped with an air traffic control tower, a full instrument landing system, and all of the necessary aeronautical lighting, airport markings and air navigation radio aids to ensure ac-

cessibility even under adverse weather conditions. The airport has two full-service fixed based operators that provide meeting rooms, car rentals, fuel maintenance, hangar rentals, charters and more. The airport’s terminal building, constructed in 2005, has a full-service restaurant, passenger lounge, administrative offices and pilot facilities. The business conference center has a main hall as well as breakout rooms. Dallas Executive Airport has good existing facilities to support general aviation and business-related activity. Its location in southern Dallas gives it proximity to highways, higher education and downtown. It has more developable land (480 acres) than any other general aviation airport in the area. continued on page 76

Today’s business and general aviation aircraft are subject to increasingly harsh environmental conditions and performance requirements. Simultaneously, engineers and equipment operators are demanding longer service life and less maintenance. The proper approach to lubrication is critical to minimizing equipment failures and meeting rigorous performance specifications. While a multitude of environmental and technical variables may affect lubricant selection and use, the following are important considerations to address whenever a new lubricant is selected:

Understand equipment operating temperatures. Critical to proper lubrication is selecting the right lubricant for the equipment’s operating temperature range. Temperature impacts the viscosity of the oil and the capabilities of the additives, ultimately changing how the lubricant performs. Therefore, it is important to know the coldest and hottest temperatures that the equipment could possibly encounter, as

well as the standard operating temperature, to ensure the correct lubricant is specified.

Consider speed and load of the equipment. Equipment that turns slowly and/or has a heavy load requires higher viscosity base oil and different additives than equipment with a higher speed or lighter load.

Be aware of environmental factors. The cleanliness of the equipment’s operating environment as well as other factors, including exposure to chemicals, moisture, vacuum, etc., will affect continued on page 77

ICG’s New ePhone Offers Expanded Capabilities to Business Aviation and Air Transport Aircraft

International Communications Group (ICG) has announced Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification of its new ePhone cordless cabin telephone system for both business aviation and air transport use. ICG worked with Chicago Jet Group to obtain an STC for business aircraft applications and also collaborated with L2 Consulting Services, Inc. for a separate STC on an air transport category Boeing 737-800 operated by a major US-based airline. ICG has also recently received Parts Manufacturer Approval (PMA) from the FAA for the new ePhone handset, docking station, bulkhead cradle and base unit. The ePhone is the ideal solution for business aircraft operators wishing to upgrade existing on-board handset systems or in new installations were the latest and most efficient onboard telephone system is desired. It has also been installed by several major U.S. airlines to provide its crews with dedicated Satcom telephone service for

The Best Little Airport in the Country is in Naples, Fla.

Top-notch facilities, outstanding customer service and a convenient location two miles from downtown Naples and three miles from the Gulf of Mexico make Naples Municipal Airport (KAPF) a favorite stop for business and leisure pilots. The staff works hard every day to make ‘the best little airport in the country’ even better. As a result, readers of Professional Pilot magazine named Naples Municipal Airport the 27th best fixed-base operator and the 15th best independent FBO in the U.S. in 2012. In addition, pilots participating in an Aviation International News FBO survey ranked the airport as the fourth most improved FBO from 2010 to 2011. “These rankings recognize our exceptional customer service and improvements made to our general aviation facilities since 2009,” said Executive Director Ted Soliday. “We appreciate this vote of confidence from the pilots who use our airport.” The City of Naples Airport Authority

renovated and expanded the airport’s general aviation terminal with a sunlit passenger lounge, business center and conference rooms, fitness facility, pilots’ lounge, weather-data station and flight-planning center. Coffee, ice and newspapers are complimentary, and Wi-Fi is available at no charge throughout the airport. Customer service representatives function as airport concierges and coordinate catering requests, make hotel, restaurant and ground-transportation reservations, arrange for crew cars and offer advice and directions to arriving pilots and passengers. In late 2010, U.S. Customs and Border Protection began providing services from a new customs facility, built and paid for by the Airport Authority as a service to airport tenants and the flying public. The facility saves time and fuel for pilots returning from overseas trips and is staffed from 10:30 a.m. until 7 p.m. seven days a week. After-hour continued on page 28

Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Expects to See Strong Business and Passenger Growth in 2013

Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport is navigating a course toward phenomenal growth due to commercial airlines success and new aviation businesses landing at the airport. With three OEM-owned service centers, new passenger airline connections to critical business aviation centers, and plenty of new development opportunities, Gateway is the choice for businesses. Within the past few years, Cessna, Hawker Beechcraft and Embraer have all chosen Gateway as a location for company-owned service centers. These companies were attracted to Gateway because of low operating costs, a business friendly atmosphere and attractive incentives. "Even beyond having the maintenance facility, it brings international attention to business opportunities here at the airport," says Lynn Kusy, Executive Director of Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Air-

port. "So having a name like Cessna, Hawker, or Embraer brings other businesses in alongside of it." Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport continues to make significant investments in airport infrastructure in order to support continued growth. With three runways each at least 9,300 feet, business jets of any size have no problem operating out of Gateway, but the airport is also planning for sharps increases in passenger airline growth. “We will have two non-stop flights per day in November on Spirit and Frontier,” says Kusy. “Wichita is served by Allegiant and has been a critical route for Cessna and Hawker Beechcraft.” Gateway served more than 950,000 passengers last year, an increase of 19 percent over 2010 and first quarter numbers for 2012 were 50 percent above 2011. Projections indicate Gateway’s primary air carrier, Allegiant, will continue

He has been in the banking and finance industry for more than 20 years and in particular, the aviation business for 13 years. Prior to PNC, his career in aviation began with Aviation Finance Group, AFG, which was a privately owned aircraft lender founded in 1998. He was part of the original founding group for AFG and stayed with the company when it was acquired by PNC Financial Services, Inc. in 2004. Q: Please tell us a bit about the com-

A: PNC Aviation Finance is one of the industry’s leading providers of aircraft finance. In fact, over the past three years, we have funded more aircraft loans than any other finance company. In June, the Airport concluded an indepth planning study to consider the infrastructure needs of the Airport over the next 20 years. Results of the study were unveiled and focused on the airfield improvements necessary, especially roads and utilities. The first phase of development for a new terminal would provide 14 gates and handle 3 million passengers annually. This means that they understand your specific needs as an aircraft owner.

We believe this is the first step in harvesting the information that is available in the refueling process and making it meaningful and available to our customers in order for them to more efficiently manage their complete refueling operation. Initially, we will capture and report vehicle health information (such as Diagnostic Trouble codes and Engine Hours) and also the ticket information for each refueling event. Future capabilities will include oil quality monitoring, fuel contamination monitoring, GPS based location reporting and acceleration/deceleration logging (to name a few). This information and associated analytics will be available on a secure internet accessible portal. Our program will also offer e-mail and text alerts of events that are deemed critical by the customer so you will know what

to survive. My beloved father remains as My Hero for instilling solid core values which aren’t always in vogue with today’s socalled cognoscenti on family values and parenting. From the very beginning my father made sure I knew I had obligations and there was no time for detailed explanations or debate. What he taught me about life helped me survive the Korean War and prepare me for a career in aviation, starting out as a radio mechanic for Dallas

Aero Service in 1956. In 1961 I started Qualitron Aero in Fort Worth…later sold to Tenneco…as one of the last few individually-owned completion centers with several hundred employees and four locations. This led me to consider and explore the possibilities of establishing an aircraft brokerage firm. A short time later we’re off to the races with foolish confidence that nirvana would be forever ours through rapidly expanding business aviation markets with real super-power entrepreneurs investing heavily. In retrospect, our strategy was about as smart and reliable as leaving a trail of bread crumbs in the forest! How wrong I was…and it was painful! In 1974 my company went broke, but the perseverance taught by my father helped me navigate through this humbling experience brought about by

the Arab Oil Embargo. But we kept going, never allowing failures and disappointment in the past to cloud our focus on success through sharp attention to realistic market values, honest dealing, customer satisfaction and going the proverbial extra mile leading to repeat business. You never know when unforeseen adversity is going to break out! Never ever underestimate the effect of government and politics in business with this being a two-edged sword. In January 2000 we had ten Boeing 727-200s flying for the US Postal Service. Just ten days before leaving office, President Bill Clinton awarded the contract to Federal Express at just about the same time as a Presidential Pardon was issued to fugitive financier Marc Rich, leaving us with a very shaky $70 Million investment.

tional service, outstanding facilities and the most convenient access to and from Fort Lauderdale,” said Clara Bennett, Executive Airport Manager. FXE serves as a vital economic engine that makes significant contributions to the financial health of Fort Lauderdale. The airport is self-sustaining. No local property tax dollars go toward its operations, maintenance or improvements. FXE generates approximately $7 million in annual revenue from land leases and fuel fees. In addition, the airport and its tenants pay approximately $4 million in ad valorem property taxes each year, making them one of the City’s largest taxpayers. According to a recent study by the Florida Department of Transportation’s (FDOT) Aviation Office, FXE is part of an industry that contributes $114 billion

annually to Florida’s economy. The statewide study revealed that Executive Airport accounts for more than $360 million in direct economic impacts, $105 million in indirect impacts and $348 million in induced impacts. FXE’s economic activity supports more than 5,000 jobs with an annual payroll of $176 million. The report’s most impressive finding, however, was that FXE’s total contribution to the local economy surpasses $815 million, which ranks it as the number one general aviation airport in Florida in terms of total economic output. Over the past decade, FXE has completed more than 30 projects to modernize infrastructure, improve safety and security and enhance overall operations. These projects represent more than $43 million of investments in the airport and

the community. The latest project under construction is a new FAA Air Traffic Control Tower, which represents one of the most significant capital improvement initiatives in the history of FXE. The facility will improve safety, enhance aircraft operations and incorporate advanced technology to maximize resources and efficiencies. The project also represents a major investment to enhance FXE’s competitive business advantage. “Upon completion, we expect the new Air Traffic Control Tower to strengthen Executive Airport’s position as a catalyst for further economic development, job growth, and business attraction in the City of Fort Lauderdale and throughout South Florida,” said Fort Lauderdale Mayor John P. “Jack” Seiler. and aftermarket vendors can’t afford to wait until the cabin interiors are installed to find unexpected noise and vibration problems. With Hutchinson's broad experience in providing a complete vibro-acoustic solution, aircraft businesses would no longer have to deal with this predicament. They account for noise and vibration right at the design stage with no more costly delays or panic driven test-based solutions. Their approach accounts for all shortfalls and diagnoses potential noise and vibration problems up front in your development process. They can manage risk by identifying possible problem areas that would need further treatment while you still have time to make an impact on the cabin interiors!

• Thermal-acoustic insulation blankets keeps air-borne noise down and improves the quality of the ride. • Together with the insulation blankets, structural damping systems applied to the floor, skin and interior trim panels can help further reduce structure-borne noise, thus improving the acoustic comfort of the cabin. • Similarly, the strategic use of isolators like interior panel mounts, engine and APU isolators, etc. helps further reduce the structure-borne noise transmitted to the cabin interiors. • Hutchinson also manufactures aircraft door and window seals to prevent any potential leaks into the cabin interior.

Remembering the Past and Looking to the Future

then to direct broadcast via satellites. His son and the company’s current chairman, Stanley S. Hubbard never lost interest in aviation, and he and the family are once again pursuing the company’s aerospace heritage. The Hubbard family was an early investor in Stage III Technologies during the initial development and certification of the hushkit and thrust reverser. Ultimately, the Hubbards purchased the intellectual property of Stage III Technologies and began production of the QS3 Hushkit System. Continuing its tradition of quality products and business integrity, the new company became Hubbard Aviation Technologies.

Joliet Avionics added the airport’s fuel concession but eventually sold it to the airport authority, choosing to focus on its core avionics and maintenance business which was booming, according to Fank. J.A. needed room to grow. Brad Zeman, President of J.A. Air, and Scott Fank, Vice President, planned their next move, this time to Aurora Municipal Airport, 13 miles from DuPage. The QS3 Hushkit System is based on the engineering science of mixing and frequency conversion with high efficiency the external ambient airflow into the high-velocity jet exhaust, which passes through a noise-attenuating ejector-suppressor. The system is able to reduce sound energy by more than 16 dB from the OEM levels for Gulfstream GII, GIIB and GIII model aircraft, eliminating 70 percent of the loudness. Along with the external noise reduction, the QS3 system provides a 22 percent or 3.8 dB average noise reduction in the passenger cabin. Incorporated into the design is a new titanium cascade-type thrust reverser that reduces weight on the engine and significantly reduces noise and vibration when deployed. This new design produces the

same braking thrust as the OEM system at a significantly reduced power setting. The United States and ICAO developed specific tests and procedures to measure aircraft noise emissions and establish the new, current noise requirements. These procedures are documented in 14 CFR Part 36 (or ICAO Annex 16, Chapter 3) and break the noise into three components: Approach, Flyover and Lateral. Individual and aggregate limits must be achieved in order to attain certification in conformance with Stage 3 (or Chapter 3) standards. These noise levels are currently imposed in Europe, Asia and most of South America and will become mandatory in the United States at the end of December 2015. Compared to the competition, the QS3 is 6.1 dBA quieter in

Approach, 4.1 dBA quieter in Lateral and 3.8 dBA quieter in Flyover. The quietness of Hubbard’s QS3 system enables its exclusion from the “Marginally Compliant” category as defined by the European Parliament, thus allowing flights into those airports that require Chapter 3 minus 5 dBA performance. The QS3 Hushkit System is the only system certified for Spey-powered Gulfstreams by both the FAA and EASA. Further, and most significantly, the system is able to achieve its performance with standard flap settings and no reduction of power, thus allowing operation of the Gulfstreams to the full extent provided by the aircraft’s original certification. and turbine maintenance and overhaul; parts sales; aircraft brokering and sales; detailing; flight training with a full-motion simulator; aircraft charter; aircraft rental; aircraft leaseback and shared ownership programs; an air shuttle service to some Midwest cities; and, of course, avionics sales and service. The vast offering is a strategy designed to win over the myriad of corporate headquarters spread along the I-88 corridor from Aurora to Naperville, Downers Grove, Oakbrook and downtown Chicago. In fact, there is only one stoplight on the drive between J.A. Air and downtown Chicago. “Companies can keep flying costs manageable by hiring a director of operations and maintenance, then use J.A. as

an ala carte resource when they need service, parts or aircraft,” he says. “We provide convenient access to all things aviation. They also get experienced mechanics that have been with us on average for more than 15 years,” says Fank. More than 30 J.A. Air team members are full-time avionics and maintenance technicians. Another 20 specialize in the FBO’s budding aircraft detailing program that handles anything from extensive bright work to a quick wipe down on everything from a Cessna Skyhawk to an Airbus ACJ or even a Boeing 767.

FBO promotes the WingPoints Rewards Card to “strengthen customer relationships,” says Fank. WingPoints rewards pilots, plane owners and flight departments for purchasing fuel with points immediately redeemable online for debit cards or gift cards. To increase brand awareness, J.A. Air regularly shares a booth with Phillips 66 Aviation at NBAA’s Annual Convention and Schedulers & Dispatchers gatherings. “We’re just outside O’Hare’s Class B air space, which has some advantages with circumventing the FAA’s Chicago airspace requirements. tablet, it provides GPS location, in-flight weather and traffic information (from ADS-B ground stations) and aircraft attitude (pitch, roll and magnetic heading). More advanced models of the iLevil series can also supply indicated airspeed, pressure altitude and engine information. One of the unique features of the iLevil is its incredibly reliable AHRS technology. The embedded AHRS is completely GPS-independent, and each one undergoes an extensive calibration process to insure excellent performance at different temperature levels, vibration frequencies and aircraft dynamics, re-

gardless of GPS reception. The 978 MHz ADS-B receiver is designed to capture real-time weather and traffic information broadcasted from ADS-B ground based transceivers without any subscription. This information coupled with GPS location and attitude, is then transmitted across the network to any mobile device using embedded WiFi or Bluetooth technology. When it comes to portable accessories, Levil Technology offers the most compatibility and reliability. Pilots can choose from multiple applications and ultimately have a complete set of independ-

To convert or not to convert existing Fluorescent Lamps in the aircraft interior to LED Lamps has become a much easier decision with the advent of Aircraft Lighting International (ALI) ’s Replacement LED Lamps. According to Nick Michelinakis, President of Aircraft Lighting International (ALI), these replacement LED Lamps are 100 percent interchangeable with the existing 12 millimeter series Fluorescent Lamps. Requiring no rewiring, no new lamp holders, no new connectors, no new dimmers, and no new controllers, these innovative and fully dimmable LED replacement lamps make the conversion

easy and economical. “Downtime, cost, and FAA paperwork are major issues when considering a conversion, these PMA-approved replacement LED lamps eliminate those concerns.” added Michelinakis. Ease of installation is a significant feature of these LED Replacement Lamps. “You can’t imagine how easy it is to change out the lights” remarked one of the many ALI customers. “Literally, one takes out the old fluorescent lamps and puts back on the existing lamp holders the new LED lamps and you are done.” As a manufacturer of aircraft interior lighting systems since 1998, besides of-

fering the Replacement LED Lamps, ALI will continue to supply PMA-approved Replacement Fluorescent Lamps. These Replacement Fluorescent Lamps are manufactured in carefully calibrated and controlled processes to guarantee uniformity and consistency in appearance. Special formulations and coating methods are incorporated to provide the richest whites and to increase lumen per watt. ALI also recently unveiled its latest 28V DC LED Lamp Kit which replaces existing Fluorescent Lamp and Ballast. unique rotating cradle allows the iPad to be viewed in both portrait and landscape modes – perfect for reviewing approach plates in portrait and an east/west route in landscape. The iPad can be brought into the cockpit of any airplane where it can be held secure on your knee or lap. Rich leather wraps the outside while soft and protective micro-fiber material lines the inside. The iPad is held by a form fitting ratcheting/rotating cradle that the iPad simply clips into. All of the ports and controls remain accessible so the iPad can be charged, synced and controlled when it is in its case. iPad Jet Mounts are for pilots who

want to mount their iPad in the tight cockpits of jet airplanes. One of the first of four mounts available is the Sport Mount – Gulfstream. This mount will allow for an iPad to be placed in a Sport Case and mounted on the yoke of a Gulfstream. And, at $318 for the mount and iPad Sport Case, this is a fraction of the cost of other such alternatives. Made from machined aluminum, there are several adjustments, tilting and rotating options so the iPad can be positioned perfectly for the pilot and the iPad can easily be rotated in portrait and landscape positions without tools. They also carry mounts for Learjet, Beech Jet, TBM, Boeing, Pilatus and

more. “The iPad continues to gain popularity and momentum in aviation, “said Charles Schneider, CEO of MyGoFlight. “We continue to expand and improve our products to meet the needs of pilots looking for the best gear for using their iPad both in and out of the plane. Do not rely heavily on the equipment’s lubrication history. A lubricant is often selected for the wrong reasons; over time, operating conditions change significantly, making the existing lubricant an inappropriate choice. When selecting a new lubricant, it is important to carefully consider equipment requirements and use the current lubricant only for general guidance.

lubricant selection and performance under various conditions.

Do not over or under lubricate. Many believe that if some grease is good, a lot is better; however, excess grease generates heat that can soften seals or cause equipment failure. Too little grease can increase wear on the equipment. Additionally, different greases deliver optimum results at different fills, so it should never be assumed that a new grease should be applied in the same amount as the existing lubricant.

Use caution when cleaning bearings. The solutions used to clean bearings and the overall cleanliness of the bearings can impact the performance. Cleaners must be compatible with the specific lubricant. This is especially important in high precision ap-

Recognize the potential for lubricant interaction with bearing materials. Bearings and seals used in aviation and aerospace applications are often made with unique materials. It is important to understand how these compositions could react with various lubricants to ensure there is no chemical reaction that could interact with the lubricant or degrade the bearings.

In addition to these basic considerations, engineers and equipment operators should also avoid common lubrication pitfalls: • Mixing greases, which can affect the

If these best practices are followed and the equipment is otherwise properly maintained, bearings could last years without re-lubrication, significantly reducing maintenance requirements and cost, and promoting optimized equipment performance.
