“The most challenging aspect of restoring dental implants is dealing with the location of the implant body. Although placing in ideal bone is a valid pretext, it is used as a justification for less than ideal location by surgical specialists. Understandably, the surgeons are often unaware of the prosthetic requirements that make an implant both functional and aesthetic,” states Paul Hertz, DMD. “We all speak of the

Heating significantly increases the flow characteristics of highly filled composites while helping to reduce voids, increase polymerization, and improving depth of cure. The lower the viscosity of composite material, the better it flows and adapts to cavity walls. Voids are reduced, which is known to reduce the risk of secondary caries. SunFlex Thousands of dentists around the world have made the switch to Sunflex Partials. In comparison to acrylic partials, Sunflex is lightweight, more comfortable and practically invisible, with no metal clasps. They offer the perfect degree of flexibility, are more stain-resistant and do not discolor, warp or become brittle, providing maximum retention, stability and esthetic appeal. They are also the easiest flexible par-

tials to adjust in-office, and teeth and claps can be added at a later time without demarcation lines. With Sunflex, you can create metalfree, lightweight flexible partial dentures that provide a natural tissue blend effect, with translucency that picks up the patient's natural tissue tone. This translucency is combined with a simulation of natural blood vessels that readily adapts to a variety of natural tissue shades. In addition to the natural coloration, each Sunflex partial is designed to follow the pattern of natural gum formations with thin clasp designs—making the restoration practically unnoticeable when worn. You have a proven partial denture system that can be designed with a lightweight, metal-free base or used in combination with a cast metal partial framework for enhanced stability and natural-looking esthetics. With either option, you can be assured you are providing your patients with the finest in partial denture treatment.

Benefits of Sunflex Flexible Partial Dentures Natural Esthetics: Your patients will benefit from the natural tissue blend effect of the thin clasp design and the translucency that picks up the natural tissue tone. Virtually invisible, Sunflex Partials give your patients the confidence they want in each and every smile. Patient Comfort: Partial dentures constructed with Sunflex can be made very thin, reducing the bulk required for strength in acrylic base materials. From the initial insertion through continued wear, the patient experiences both minimal obstruction and minimal reaction to the stresses normally produced by rigid base materials.

Durability: Sunflex provides exceptional compressive, impact and bending strength and will not deteriorate chemically when it comes into contact with the fluids, bacteria and physical environment of the mouth. Biocompatibility: Sunflex is monomerfree and hypo-allergenic.

a wide range of cases, from complex cosmetic cases to single unit anterior restorations.” Based in Elmhurst, Ill., MicroDental Chicago is led by Albert Tassi, CDT. continued on page 44

Stress-Breaking Function: The flexibility of the Sunflex resin achieves the effect of a stress-breaker without attachments. The gingiva tissue is gently stimulated under mastication, and unnatural stresses on the remaining teeth are substantially reduced.

Sunflex Indications: Sunflex can be used whenever you are considering a removable partial denture for your patient. There are three basic design options when considering Sunflex: • Sunflex Bilateral Partial Denture: The metal-free, flexible Sunflex Partial provides a fully-functional, yet esthetically superior, removable partial denture. Patients who have worn both conventional metal partials and Sunflex Partials report that Sunflex feels more natural in the mouth because of the thinness and lightweight design of the material. Additionally, patients report that Sunflex Partials give them more confidence when smiling and appearing in public because of excellent retention and the thin clasp designs. • Sunflex Unilateral Partial Denture: The unilateral Sunflex restoration procontinued on page 44

Pollard Dental Products’ Diamond Drill Designs Leads to New Techniques for Different Procedures

Pollard Dental Products, Inc., was founded in 1955 in Santa Monica, California. It was started as an alternative of some of the salesmen working with a Los Angeles-based dental diamond manufacturer, when quality control issues plagued the company. These salesmen started distributing Dental Diamond Drills from various reputable manufacturers of the time on a wholesale to retail network setup directly to dentists. Years later, quality and delivery time issues caused problems once again, with no viable solution, other than for the company to remain smaller sized, in a limited region of Los Angeles. When Jeff Pollard became involved in Convention Sales in 1973, he soon realized these limitations to growth, so he looked for several sources of supply in order to expand the scope of sales. At the same time, he explored the possibilities of manufacturing as well. With local alliances with friends who were research engineers at the local Rockwell Research and Development facility in Newbury Park, Calif., known for their Missile and Rocket research with NASA, collaboration efforts were developed, leading to one of the best made Dental Diamond Drills in the industry. Jeff Pollard furthered the development of Dental Diamond Drill research with studies of grits and causes of drill vibration, which coincided with the research done by Dr. Rex Ingraham (USC) and Dr. Morton Amsterdam (Penn State) in the term they coined as “Hammering the Tooth” with dental drills by drills with Eccentric Wobble, caused by poorly manufactured “Raw Blanks” (or Shanks). At over more than 100,000 rpm, Wobble be-

comes an excessive vibration, and therefore lessens the cutting speed of the diamond drill, but also causes premature drill failure and breakdown. Pollard discovered no less than 14 different factors in Diamond Drill manufacturing that causes drill vibration, slower cutting speeds, and drill failure, and eliminated each of these factors one by one, leading to the highest quality dental diamond drill made, in addition to being the fastest cutting drill on the market. Our generous “Free Sample” promotion will allow you to make this decision on your own with your own evaluation, at no cost to you, and we pay for shipping for no out of pocket costs. We’ll go “Head to Head” with any other brand to prove our claims. And it costs you nothing to put us to the test! We’ll most likely be the only company at McCormick Center this year who isn’t trying to sell you something? We simply want to get some free samples to you, so drop off your business card at our booth to order your free samples (or go online and order by phone or email from our website), If you drop your business card off at our booth, you’ll automatically be entered for a chance to Win a Free TAG Heuer Watch ($3600 retail value), no purchase necessary, don’t need to be present to win, and “dentists only.” Drawing will be held on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. by the President of the CDS, Dr. David Fulton, Jr. (If you can’t stop by our booth this year, your Assisting Staff can drop off your business card for you, if you’re too busy at the seminars. One entry per dentist.) Something very timely for dentists today, regarding the hype and misleading advertising in dentistry, is, Pollard will be addressing the

claims of Heat Fused Nickel Bonding on Diamond Drills as to whether or not it is superior or inferior to bonding strength, at the booth in Chicago this year. Come to booth #4448 as see the Science and Physics of Diamond Plate Bonding, Electroplating, and Heat Fusing (Welding) techonlogy, as per research of Cornell University Pysics Dept, University of Colo. Physics Dept., The University of Minnesota Physics Dept., with indisputable evidence from Rockwell, NASA, and JPL research scientists. Oxidized Layers from Heat Fusing of Stainless Steel (Welding Failures) is so important because of bonding failure and delamination, it is studied by the Top University Physics Departments, as well as our Top “Space Science” experts, and Nuclear Power Plant Inspecting experts. We’ll give you all the facts. Those are the welds in Nuclear Power Plants that require “XRay and Ultra-Sound” Inspections. We’ll show you an X-Ray photo of what this Oxidized Layer looks like in a Stainless Steel weld. Dentist can think of an Oxidized Layer in Stainless Steel bonding, as like the “Smear Layer” that weakens the bond in Composite Bonding. Because of the high quality of Pollard Diamond Drills, many High Profile dentists asked Pollard to work with them on the development of new designs for different procedures. The first major breakthrough in new drill design was with Dr. Rex Ingraham in the Rotary Gingival Curettage diamond. (Gingettage) This was soon followed by Dr. Peter K. Thomas’ design of what is called the “Tip Cutter” shoulder forming diamond. Morton Amsterdam and his college Leonard Abrams worked with Pollard in the development of a Perio Gingettage, which was a modification of Dr. Ingraham’s design. On a different area of tooth preparation. Pollard worked with Dr. Peter Dawson and Dr. Pete Roach in the design of a “Self Limiting” Inlay and Onlay Preparation Diamond. There were Depth Cutting Wheels designed with the help of Dr. Henry Tanner (USC), known for his

work in promoting “High Speed Dentistry.” There are also very interesting designs for Porcelain Veneer and Porcelain Crown Preparation and Techniques by Dr. David L. Baird, with new designs that are to be introduced in 2013, which are in the Prototype stages of development now. There are also designs, such as the “Top Spin” designed by Dr. Raymond Bertolotti for Anatomically Correct Diamond Contouring procedures after composite placement and bonding. So Jeff Pollard appropriately gave it the Acronym of the “AC-DC Series.” An Acronym that most of us can remember. There are many more interesting and innovative designs, such as Dave Baird’s “Gorilla Diamond” aptly named for fast, aggressive tooth reduction, but with what Jeff Pollard is famous for, fast cutting, yet Vibration Free tooth reduction. There are many more designs, too many to mention here, so visit our their website, to learn more at www.PollardDentalProducts.com, call 800-235-1849 or stop by Booth #4448. Practice Builders, CEO Steve Sorensen. “Sorbella can be a big part of the solution.” According to Retail Healthcare News (Oct. 15, 2012), by 2014, an additional 30 million Americans will be eligible to receive insurance coverage under the Affordable Healthcare Act. That influx, combined with Americans already insured, will outnumber the healthcare practices and clinics able to accommodate the demand for services. “We recognize the need for additional healthcare facilities and so our purpose for Sorbella Practice Builders is to help healthcare professionals in this transition,” said Sorbella Practice Builders

Often implant cases are returned from the surgeon uncentered, too close to each other or to adjacent teeth, and with the inability to use the manufacturers’ stock abutments. Moreover, even when a stent is provided, it is often questionable whether it was actually used,” Hertz continues. If the implant is ideally placed, stock abutments can be used, saving a great deal of time and expense for both the patient

cements, resulting in less stress and chairtime for the Clinician. Plus, as a singlestep cement, it provides clinicians with the added benefit of not requiring an

their own top notch service and handpiece repair technicians that take pride in knowing the products they sell inside and out. Archer Sr. states “We feel extremely fortunate to represent product lines like J.MORITA digital X-rays, with the release of their new 3-D R100 , it truly is a game changer when you think about Cone Beam machines, not only is it priced significantly less than most full Cone Beams, it features a full arch view of up to 100 by 80 milimeters, far more realistic and easier to read then small slice machines. It really is hard to beat the

quality and value of Morita X-rays. We also represent XDR Sensors, the quality of their images rival any out there and the ease of use of their program is unmatched. The low cost and compatibility of these sensors will be a perfect fit for most any office.” “In 2001 we were approached by Vector Research, and we were immediately impressed with their overall value and performance. The new VX Velocity Extreme models will change the way you think about how much you need to spend to get a top quality German Handpiece.

Vector also offers a wide range from curing lights to scalers, which are always at the top of the performance and value categories. Some Dentists and Hygienists still believe you have to spend upward of $1,600.00 to get a quality Ultrasonic scaler, I would put the Vector ‘LiL Beaver ultrasonic scaler’ against any of those high priced units from those national brands,” says Archer Sr. If you’re attending the Midwinter Meeting here in Chicago, don’t hesitate to drop by and meet them at Booth #2716 and see some of these products firsthand.

dentist will find that it is not only simple to learn but easy to use. Benefits from utilizing this type of technology as a dentist include less adjustments, improved accuracy, faster then traditional route of impression, reduced remakes, no impression materials or mess and it can also be cost effective. Cornerstone and Bio-Comp Dental Labs knows the best interest is with the patient in mind, so along with the added benefits to the dentist and their practice, the patient will experience a quick and comfortable impression, a better fitting restoration, improved clinical results, fewer remakes and reduced appointments and less time in the exam chair. While Cornerstone and Bio-Comp are working with dentists to help bring them to the newest wave of technology

and advancing practices, they are also expanding the products and services that they offer. With the increase of alloy prices, Cornerstone and BioComp Dental Labs is pushing forward with the all porcelain restoration. Though this type of restoration has been around for years, the strength and esthetics in the materials available have grown considerably. Cornerstone and Bio-Comp partner with Ivoclar Vivadent and offer the best in all porcelain, the E.max crown. With this restoration, they are not only able to guarantee the durability, but they are able to ensure the esthetics of a natural and beautiful dental crown. Another all porcelain crown that is available is the zirconia crown. Cornerstone and BioComp are able to design and mill their

own zirconia in the lab. For posterior crowns, they recommend the full contour zirconia crown, which is perfect for patients who have a bruxing issue, and for the anterior region, they suggest a layered zirconia, which is the strength of the zirconia core with the esthetics built with E.max porcelain. Cornerstone and Bio-Comp believe in marrying the right technician, the right technology, the right material and the right technique. Many labs just make dental crowns, but with Cornerstone and Bio-Comp Dental Labs, they create dental crowns that are worthy of a lifetime guarantee. and the dentist. Properly executed implant dentistry can be predictable and profitable, with few unplanned costs and steps. “In the end, the restorative dentist is the one who must take responsibility for sizing, emergence profile, etc. Certainly, this can be achieved by extremely talented dentists and dental laboratory teams. However in reality, many of us have more average skills; this is where an implant tool, such as the Delineator (exclusively from Keating Dental Arts) comes in,” states Hertz. Inspired by the word “Delineate,” Latin for map, Keating Dental Art’s 4-in1 implant tool, the Delineator, is a radi-

ographic guide, surgical stent, provisional restoration and implant locator, This practical tool allows the general dentist to gain much more control of the surgical phase of implant dentistry. “By using the Delineator the restoring dentist can exactly direct the surgeon as to the most ideal position for implant placement. Used as a stent the Delineator provides superior guidance and practicality to that of most implant guides. Given adequate bone, the surgeon can precisely place the implant using the metal sleeve/drill guide which is located in the exact center of the proposed implant crowns, allowing for the most ideal

emergence profile and tooth sizing,” Hertz concludes. Eliminate any guesswork between the surgeon, restoring doctor and technician by prescribing the Delineator as the first step of your implant case planning. Send a diagnostic model or impression of your case, and the Keating Dental Arts team of Certified Dental Technicians will provide you with an expertly crafted Delineator. The Delineator is another example of “the right products, done right, right on time” from Keating Dental Arts. See the Delineator at Keating Dental Arts Booth #814.

“Though the dental lab industry is changing rapidly, dentists still desire predictable quality and reliable service,” commented Albert Tassi, Lab Manager of MicroDental Chicago. “What makes MicroDental Chicago exciting is that we uti-

offer their patients a precise fitting, aesthetic denture in as little as two appointments. AvaDent, whose name is derived from Ava meaning rebirth and Dent meaning dentition, allows dentists to offer a digital denture based on accepted clinical protocols, using standard clinical procedures, with no computer skills or capital investment required. Unique to AvaDent is the all-important digital record that allows dentists to offer their patients a new degree of convenience and security never before possible. If an AvaDent is broken or lost an identical AvaDent can be fabricated without doctor or patient involvement and sent directly to the dentist. The AvaDent digital record also allows dentists to create a removable “treatment plan,” that offers their patients the promise of uncompromised quality and on-going, oral care, while increasing patient retention for the practice. Now AvaDent patients can receive a remov-

New at Global Dental Science the AvaDent Advanced Try-In For those dentists who have asked for a try-in to supplement the standard two appointment protocol, AvaDent now offers an Advanced Try-In option. This however, is no standard try-in. It is built on a strong milled foundation and the teeth are set in a ridge of wax. This allows the dentist to make the functional and aesthetic changes necessary to best serve their patients.

Introducing the AvaDent Immediate System AvaDent now offers an exclusive, immediate protocol for first time denture patients. Aided by the exclusive AvaDent Digital Record, their immediate system offers the dentist options such as a specially milled AvaDent Immediate Denture for healing, an AvaDent Scanning

53 Guide, an AvaDent Verification / Reduction Guide, a fully milled AvaDent Provisional Denture and a final definitive AvaDent Digital Denture. Go to www.avadent.com for more information.

The AvaDent Alternate Record Technique The key to creating a great AvaDent is making sure that all the inner occlusal records are captured at the first appointment using their proprietary impression taking technique and Anatomical Measurement Device (AMD). Now, in those cases where it is clinically appropriate and an existing denture is present, they have developed an alternative record technique which uses a duplicate denture protocol instead of an AMD. There is information about this new technique on their website.

AvaDent is also working with faculty and students of several universities to further refine the process and educate the dental profession about this paradigm shift in removable dentistry. Those universities include: Loma Linda University School of instruments.

Finally, they are pleased to announce that AvaDent has been selected as a Top 100 Product by the readers of Dentistry Today, has won the Townie Choice Award for Best New Product and is the recipient of this year’s coveted “Best of Class” Technology Award from The Pride Institute. characteristics of Denbur applicators are the double bending feature in the Magic-Brush, Master-Brush and MaxiBrush series. Another exclusive applicator is the Nano-Brush. TEKSCAN

(continued from page 41)

Dentists all over the world are using the T-Scan to protect their cosmetic cases from harmful forces, ensuring proper implant loading and preventing remakes and fractures, minimizing emergency visits, and saving valuable chair time. The data recorded by the T-Scan puts the dentist in control of the treatment sequence by providing the percentage of force distribution for a patient's bite. There is no need to rely on “How does that feel?” to qualify treatment. For more information visit http://www.tekscan.com/dental.
