Research demonstrates that stress and improper dental forces associated with the muscles, nerves, tendons, and ligaments in the mouth, jaw, neck, and face area contribute to chronic headaches, migraines, and other symptoms. These collectively can be attributed to conditions described as dentomandibular sensorimotor dysfunction. Until recently, dentists have been unable to objectively assess these forces or systematically treat and monitor patients who experience painful symptoms from muscle and force dysfunction. continued on page 25

Statistically, the first molars are the most common teeth that are lost due to decay or periodontal disease, and the replacement of the first molars with implants is the most common site of the implant surgery in the patient’s mouth. Although the placement of the implants in healed molar sites is a common practice in implant dentistry, the immediate placement of the implant in a fresh extraction site offers substantial benefits to the patients, surgical and restorative continued on page 13

An Interview with Dr. Bergersen, Inventor Earl O. Bergersen DDS, MSD will be presenting on the most efficient and cost effective techniques to straighten teeth without braces.

Q: What makes OrthoTain Appliances so unique?

A: The Ortho-T technique is the superior, most effective choice of adult orthodontic treatment without braces. Ortho-T’s unique design allows permanent dentition to be guided into a perfect class I occlusion with only one appliance worn 1-2 hours per day. The Ortho-T technique takes 1/5 the time of fixed treatment. Q: What benefits does the Ortho-T technique for adult treatment without braces have over other adult treatment techniques? • As previously stated, Ortho-T is worn 1-2 hours per day; treatment time is 2-12 months which is approximately ⅓ the time of most other procedures. • Ortho-T’s cost is ¼ to ½ that of fixed treatment. • Ortho-T corrects overbite, overjet, crowding, spacing and TMJ.

• Ortho-T requires only one appliance which is worn for both active treatment as well as retention. If relapse occurs 10 years later, the same appliance can be used. • No interruptions or changing of appliance if dental work is done. Any type of treatment - bridgework, extractions, implants; do not affect the fit of the appliance.

Q: How difficult is it for a dentist to understand and implement the Ortho-T technique?

A: Attending a one-day course or viewing our seminar on DVD will provide the necessary knowledge. Ortho-T is the easiest appliance to use on the market.

Q: How many patients have been treated with the Ortho-T? A: Over 3 million.

Q: Ortho-Tain also has an orthodontic treatment procedure for teenagers and young children? • Occlus-o-Guide can be used for almost continued on page 37

practitioners. Some benefits to the patients are obvious – a separate surgical procedure does not have to be done since the implant is placed at the same time with tooth extraction and the timeframe from the tooth extraction to the final restoration, which is typically 10 months, is greatly shortened, to four months. Other benefits are not as obvious and need to be pointed out to the patient. For example, the horizontal bone loss or the sinus expansion with vertical bone loss during the socket healing may alter the ideal implant placement in buccal-lingual direction or necessitate a costly sinus elevation/ grafting procedure. Implants placed in healed sites are often placed lingually/palatally from the ideal position due to buccal bone resorption and final restorations exhibit unnatural emergence profiles that are not esthetically pleasing. Conventional wide diameter implants have 5.0–6.0 millimeter diameter

that makes the immediate implant placement into the extraction socket less predictable due to a large gap between the implant and the surrounding bone that needs to be filled with grafting material. Due to a large diameter, up to 8 millimeter, Really Wide Implants minimize the implant/bone gap which leads to a faster implant integration. Integration of Really Wide Implants into the KAT Implants System, according to Vitali Bondar, DDS who is the President and Founder of KAT Implants, was relatively easy since the implants share the same platform with all other KAT implants. Dentists can use the same instrumentation and abutments on 3.0 millimeter small diameter implants as well as on 8.0 millimeter Really Wide Implants! No More Compromise! Zest Anchors Introduces the LOCATOR Overdenture Implant System

Until now, choosing a narrow diameter implant often meant a sacrifice in attachment performance and ultimately patient satisfaction. Introducing the LOCATOR Overdenture Implant System (LODI) featuring narrow diameter implants with the world’s leading overdenture attachment from the originators of the trusted LOCATOR Attachment, Zest Anchors. Designed with the best in class LOCATOR Attachment, LODI offers a less invasive, predictable and durable implant retained overdenture for pa-

tients requiring an effective, cost conscious technique for securing their denture. The unique two-piece coronal design of LODI, not found with O-ball mini implants, is a critical feature that optimizes patient satisfaction. LODI is used to restore masticatory function for the patient and may be suitable for immediate function if sufficient primary stability of the implant is achieved at the time of placement. The LODI System is comprised of 2.4 millimeter and 2.9 millimeter diameter endosseous dental im-

Quality Control Achieved by Controlling Everything

At NSK it’s all in-house: researching, developing, manufacturing, testing

NSK uses more than 17,000 precision parts to build high-speed rotary cutting instruments and accessories, including handpieces and tips that dental professionals use in restorations, prosthetics, endodontics, oral hygiene, lab work and surgery. Considering the market’s demand for ever-more precise, strong and compact instruments, that’s not so surprising. The surprising part is this: Of those 17,000-plus parts, NSK manufactures more than 85 percent in-house. The company even designs and builds the equipment it uses to manufacture and test those

parts — so it can ensure micron-order accuracy. It’s all part of an obsessive focus on quality control that dates to the company’s founding in Japan in 1930. Today, NSK products have proven their worth in more than 130 countries — including the United States. and Canada, which are served by NSK America, now called NSK Dental LLC. The philosophy of building the machines to build the parts to build the product has followed the company into every market it enters. Additionally, the organization’s management structure puts control at regional levels to ensure prompt product delivery and responsive after-sales servicing. Just as important, it’s within the vari-

plants (available in 10, 12 and 14 millimeter lengths) with a detachable LOCATOR Attachment (abutment) that is available in a 2.5 milimeters and 4 millimeters cuff height. The LOCATOR Attachment is seated after implant placement making case planning, implant surgery and the restorative process easier. LODI demonstrates remarkable resiliency and exceptional durability, while allowing for easy replacement of the attachment should wear occur throughout time. In addition, LODI is manufactured from Grade 5 Ti Alloy for strength and features a proven RBM roughened surface. The system also features uniquely designed, intuitive placement instrumentation, and may be used with a flapless technique for better patient comfort. Included with LODI, the LOCATOR Attachment provides all of the superior benefits known worldwide including its patented pivot technology, customizable levels of retention, and draw correction

of divergent implants up to 40 degrees. All of this while having a dramatically reduced vertical height compared to O-ball mini implants. The LODI system now allows you to treat patients with the minimum standard of care* of an implant supported overdenture, at a reduced cost and with greater satisfaction. LODI will be available in the winter of 2012. For more information contact Zest Anchors, call 800-262-2310, visit www.zestanchors.com.

Equipping a No Compromise Practice for Less By Dr. David Ahearn

Time and time again we hear from practitioners that tell us that they would love the ultimate high tech practice but that they just can’t afford to make it happen. Quite simply—that isn’t so. When we meet a practitioner that perceives this difficulty, we generally uncover one or more of the following problems: 1. The practitioner believes that his or her productive capacity, and therefore income, is quite a bit lower than what is easily achieved through relatively simple workplace modifications. 2. The practitioner believes that his or her required treatment room layout, and

ous regions that the company constantly solicits feedback from users of its products. The goal is to be able to swiftly respond to local needs.

It’s all about the hand Control of all aspects of the development process helps NSK ensure timely regulatory compliance, improve reliability and shorten development time. But even more critical to NSK is the direct channel its processes create between product users and developers. With its dental instruments in particular, much of the focus goes directly to the hand of the end user. “Handpieces and the Human Hand — Powerful Partners” is the company’s core branding message. The goal is an ergonomic design that becomes an extension of the dental professional’s hand, transmitting intentions of delicate hand movements promptly and precisely

therefore equipment costs, is far in excess of that actually needed.

3. The doctor has been unable to design enough treatment capacity into the office space available, because of a misperception about treatment room size requirements.

Operatory productivity is a function of operatory organization, practitioner skill level and office design. Our studies indicate most motivated practitioners possess an adequate understanding of the procedure techniques necessary to provide great customer satisfaction. Therefore, it has been our experience that the remaining elements (design & organization) are the keys to unlocking heightened office continued on page 28

to the target.

A tradition of innovation Recent NSK advancements include an ultrasonic scaler and tooth polisher; bone-cutting instruments that employ ultrasonic technologies; a mass- produced all-titanium handpiece body; air turbines with a unified inner race and rotor shaft to achieve vibration-free and silent operation; and the SMax pico, an ultra-miniature-neck/head handpiece (the world’s smallest) for better access and patient comfort. It adds up to a strong reputation for reliability, responsiveness and high-value contributions to advancements in patient care across all dental sectors, including implant treatment, laboratory techniques, general dentistry and endodontics. Just released this month, “Understanding, Assessing & Treating Dentomandibular Sensorimotor Dysfunction” emphasizes how dysfunction in the dentomandibular area can be the underlying cause of many chronic headaches, migraines and other painful symptoms. This well-referenced, educational text includes illustrations, easy-to-follow tables, and self-assessment quizzes. Visit Booth #3302 at the Greater New York Dental Meeting and pick up your copy…a $79.99 value, available during the show for the special show price of $39.99. “Understanding, Assessing & Treating Dentomandibular Sensorimotor Dysfunction” is a must-read for dentists interested in doing more to relieve their patient’s pain and stabilize the

dental foundation before undertaking restorative dentistry. The TruDenta System is a complete system for assessing, treating and managing dynamic force imbalances in the mouth (see photo above). It incorporates patented assessment and treatment technology and software, supplemented by clinical training and ongoing practice implementation assistance. TruDenta examination and assessment devices objectively measure and visually illustrate causes of patient symptoms from dentomandibular sensorimotor dysfunction. The system evaluates the amount and balance of forces during closure, at closure and while chewing using digital force measurement (T-Scan) technology. The cervical range of motion is measured with the computerized TruDentaROM (Range of Motion) tool. A cervical ROM disability correlates

with a mandibular ROM disability and/or an imbalanced dental foundation. The TruDenta treatment devices represent a proven combination of sports medicine rehabilitation and advanced dentistry technologies. They are cleared by the FDA, and the combination is unique and proven to achieve long-lasting relief. The examination process includes a head health, medical, and headache history, and a pharmacological assessment. The physical examination is supplemented by objective findings, including mandibular ROM disability, digital cervical ROM disability, and digital force analysis (TruDentaScan). The ROM portion of the assessment provides objective data to AMA guidelines. Other components of the assessment process include thorough dental, periodontal, airway, orthodontic and occlusal examinations.

Patients undergo therapies using a proprietary combination of low level laser therapy, therapeutic ultrasound, transcutaneous electrical stimulation, and intraoral orthotics. These modalities were originally developed by MDs to speed the healing of joints and force related traumas. Although the TMJ is the most complex joint in the body, it responds to therapies the way ankles, knees, shoulders, and other joints do. TruDenta combines these with advanced dentistry, as appropriate, to achieve predictable and long lasting outcomes. Dentists can therefore use the TruDenta system to confidently assess and treat muscle and force dysfunction, and provide patients with opportunities to address their symptoms for long-term health and dental stability. the DENTIST knows it’s a great investment; does the patient have the same opinion? Making that idea shine brightly in the patient’s mind–that dentistry really IS hugely important–it isn’t chance or luck, it’s something you can elicit from every patient who walks though your door–yes, EVERY patient–if the dentist and team know exactly what to say.

The other block is the lack of team systems in the office. The difference between an office system that works like a beat-up Ford Pinto and one that works like a smooth Mercedes is about 30 minutes of attention each week. This always surprises our clients but the transformation is remarkable. Having a team that works like a smooth machine is a boost to morale AND marketing at the same

It’s not about solving a riddle; it’s about applying methods we’ve tested over 20 years. Just as there are proven remedies for gum disease, there are proven remedies for overwhelm, low morale and low collections.

Q: That sounds very exciting! How can you prove that Piezosurgery is really safe to use around delicate anatomy such as nerves, membranes or arteries? A: Great question!

First, Piezosurgery uses a multi-wave frequency that cuts bone, cleans it away, and digs a little deeper by moving the cutting tips the thickness of a human hair at about 30,000 times per second. The soft tissue basically jiggles with the tip and the bone doesn’t. Therefore Piezosurgery easily cuts through bone without harming the softer, more delicate adjacent anatomy.

Johnson-Promident’s Diamond Burs and Finishing and Polishing Instruments offer the same leading quality performance, including head-to-head comparable products to the industry leaders, like 3M’s Sof-Lex discs and strips, Dentsply’s Pogo and Enhance polishers, and Brasseler’s multi-use diamonds. And, as with all of their products, no one can match Johnson-Promident’s value, not just through the outstanding quality of the products but also through great prices, same-day shipping and tiny backorder rate. Johnson-Promident is part of a larger organization that includes a sister com-

pany in the dental industry, JP Solutions, a leading private label and branded provider of infection control, evacuation, and disposable products. JP Solution’s brands include the environmentally-sensitive line of Ecotex products, which provide all of the form and function required in disposable products but also integrate the responsible application of the three R’s (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle).
