BURNDY: A Solution-Focused Manufacturer

When faced with an inquiry from a series of contractors and conductor manufacturers to provide a solution to the dilemma of crimping consistency along with a need for time saving— BURNDY delivered—providing a new and patented solution that removes guesswork and saves time in transmission connector installations. The design and application of crimping dies used to install transmission connectors is critical to their performance. Though there are many manufacturers of crimping tools, dies, or connectors in the marketplace, installers who use the

BURNDY Engineered System of tools, dies, and connectors know that they will achieve an extremely reliable connection. This is not chance, BURNDY understands how critical an effective connection is to any electrical system, and designs that effectiveness into their connection systems— the connector, tool, and die designed as a system. For transmission applications, “overlapping crimps” is the normal method for compressing deadends, splices, and jumper terminals. For all applications, BURNDY ensures that an appropriate ‘compression ratio’ is achieved

Induron: Coat It And Forget It Davies Hood became President of Induron Coatings, a 65-year-old Industrial Paint manufacturer January 1, 2012. Davies is the third generation owner of this family business. His previous positions at Induron have been Executive Vice President, Sales Manager, VP Operations and a regional sales representative. He joined the Induron Team in 1997 after helping start an Environmental Engineering firm. Davies holds a BS in Biology from Hampden-Sydney College in 1992.

Q: Please start by telling us a bit about the Induron and your history.

A: Induron is an industrial coatings manufacturer that began making paint for the Post-War steel industry in Birmingham, AL in 1947. Over the past 65 years, our company has strived to produce reliable protection through innovative coatings. Induron has adapted over the years in order to compete against much larger competitors. We have transitioned from producing predominantly primers for steel to high quality architectural paints to the industry leading lining for ductile iron sewer pipe. To come full circle, we are cur-

rently focused on producing traditional coatings for the power market. Q: Please tell us about the company's main product for the Power market.

A: We developed Induraguard 9200 to be the most cost-effective coating [often one coat] to fight corrosion on weathered galvanized or corroded carbon steel T&D structures. This product is high build, easy-to-use, has excellent wetting properties and provides unrivaled barrier protection that is all based on a totally sustainable resin system derived from plant material. The barrier protection is so good because of the synergistic properties provided by the proven pigment package or ingredients, some of which date all the way back to paints used by the ancient Greeks! Q: What features or benefits do these barrier pigments provide?

A: The micaceous iron oxide is a large lamellar-shaped pigment that provides a “labyrinth-effect” or “shielding” that slows the ingress of water, chlorides, and pollutants. Additionally it reduces the continued on page 21

between the connector and conductor, to optimize the lifetime of the connection, apply the appropriate force, and result in the best-finished connection surface. The BURNDY engineering team, after listening to the issues faced in the field, developed a family of 60 ton crimping dies with increased crimping widths and indicia marks. This resulted in a much improved installation practice for transmission connector installers and a decrease in per-connector installation time. By providing indicia marks on the die surface, a slight embossment is created on the crimped connector, providing the installer with the start location for the next overlapping crimp consistently—every time. By increasing crimping widths without sacrificing the continued on page 24

Boiler Insurance Company (HSB) stated, “Old transformers and new transformers are subjected to operating stress due to system growth and corresponding increases in loads. But the older transformers no longer have the physical strength to tolerate the high radial and compressive forces and thus fail more often.” What is true for transformers is equally true for other transmission and distribution assets. In years past, the solution would have been to build more power plants with brand new assets to meet the growing demand. Unfortunately, in the current economic and ecological environments, it is impossible to build ourselves out of this dilemma. The funds simply

aren’t there and customers could never absorb the costs of replacing huge chunks of the T&D infrastructure. In addition, the environmental consequences of building more of the same could be dire. To date, innovation in electrical transmission and distribution infrastructure has not kept pace with innovation in other industries. In 1975, cellular mobile phones as we know them did not exist. Today, they are everywhere. This and other communications technologies like mesh radio, Wi-Fi and 3G/4G have dramatically altered the telecommunications landscape. It is unlikely that Alexander Graham Bell, who invented the telephone, would recognize the industry his invention helped found. On the other hand, today’s electricity infrastructure would be quite familiar to Thomas Edi-

son, who patented the first electric distribution system. Not that much has changed since his time. Fortunately, the utility industry can leverage the advancements in IT and remote communications to catapult itself into the 21st century. The communications and computing revolutions are finally enabling the practical, cost-effective implementation of the smart grid. IT advancements have spawned a new generation of compact, highly accurate, cost-effective sensing devices that non-intrusively monitor and control transmission and distribution assets— from overhead and underground lines and large power transformers, right down to the residential transformer. With advanced communications, these sensors instantly report back to the control station

via multiple communications protocols, providing immediate notification of issues that could lead to disruptions and outages. With such sensors, utilities can reduce maintenance costs as crews no longer manually search the field for the faults because the control center receives instant notification pinpointing the issue. These sensors also increase the capacity of existing infrastructure by monitoring and balancing load, and extending asset life through preventive maintenance. This is energy efficiency at the transmission and distribution level, and sophisticated sensing devices that enable it are foundations of a more efficient grid—a smart grid. SpanGuard markers for direct attachment to high corona and/or high temperature ACSS lines are made of aluminum and are rated up to 250° C

(482° F) and 500KV. The FAA advises that 36” markers be used on high transmission lines and hazardous river crossings. Smaller 20” markers are permitted on less extensive power lines or on lines below 50 feet in approaches to airports. Each marker should be a solid color—international orange, yellow, or white—and the FAA suggests that alternating colors be used on critical lines to optimize visibility in all seasons. DuraSteel robust noncorrosive construction makes it an ideal material for both interior and exterior use to protect personnel and property. DuraSteel can be painted for aesthetic purposes. DuraSteel is a unique non-combustible material consisting of two metal sheets, galvanized or stainless steel, mechanically bonded to a cement fibre core. DuraSteel is exceptionally robust, resistant to impact, fire & blast, reduces sound, unaffected by moisture and once installed requires minimal maintenance and have a life expectancy of up to 40 years even in the

most severe environments. By combining lightweight and durable materials to make the facing layers and core, DuraSteel assemblies require minimal foundations for support. DuraSteel is essential for assemblies such as fire & blast barriers, enclosures, fire & blast doors, cable trays, duct assemblies. DuraSteel sheets have been tested to withstand a four-hour fire test, hose stream test and 2-Bar of post blast pressure.

Without the synergistic effects of these three barrier pigments the coating could never last 25-30 years with just one coat.

SF6 Leak Detection SF6 is commonly used in substations and GIS installations due to its arc quenching and insulating capabilities. SF6 leakage, though, is heavily regulated and considered one of the worst greenhouse gases. LumaSense’s SF6 leak-detection solutions are sensitive enough to measure down to 5 ppb, allowing for detection of leakage the minute it starts. They also allow for multipoint sampling to cover larger areas.

Our guards are fully hotstick installable making it unnecessary to de-energize equipment prior to installation. It is a fact that insects build nests in conventional animal guards so safety departments prefer Therm-A-Guards; ours allow crews to see nests prior to removal of a guard so insect killer can be sprayed directly at the nest preventing insect stings. When removing solid guards, crew members have no idea what is nesting inside. Our customer base ranges from the freez-
