SpanGuard Power Line Markers: 50 Years Of Saving Lives

For over 50 years, SpanGuardTM markers from P&R Technologies have been saving lives and protecting valuable power lines by making them visible to low flying aircraft. Many of the original SpanGuard/HeliMark markers installed in the early 1960s remain in service to this day. Over the years, SpanGuard design has been improved and extended to a variety of models that fit nearly any application and budget, including EHV markers for high voltage lines and aluminum markers for high temperature lines. All are routinely installed on hot lines by helicopter. All SpanGuard markers use spiral formed armor rods for secure attachment to the live conductor, OPGW or shield wire. The spiral preforms extend outward from the marker and actually reinforce and protect the conductor at the point of attachment. Completely slipproof, they prevent line damage often associated with clamps that dig into the line. The preforms are matched at time of order to the specific size, type and diameter of line. SpanGuard markers for lines up to 500KV are constructed of K-10 ABS with a special UV weather cap. It resists fading, cracking or breaking and has 15 times the weatherability and color reten-

tion of fiberglass. SpanGuard markers for direct attachment to high corona and/or high temperature ACSS lines are made of aluminum and are rated up to 250° C (482° F) and 500KV. The FAA advises that 36” markers be used on high transmission lines and hazardous river crossings. Smaller 20” markers are permitted on less extensive power lines or on lines below 50 feet in approaches to airports. Each marker should be a solid color—international orange, yellow, or white—and the FAA suggests that alternating colors be used on critical lines to optimize visibility in all seasons. (Orange alone may be difficult to see against fall foliage.) Because of their durable construction, easy installation and “line friendly” performance, SpanGuard markers have been chosen by over 2,000 utilities, and all are repeat customers. In addition to power line markers, P&R Technologies offers an industry leading selection of bird diverters, LED FAA beacons and lighting, solar powered lighting, warning flags for low lines and thermal imaging for perimeter security. mission engineering, conductor temperature is directly related to both capacity and operating costs. We call our groundbreaking new thermal imaging technology, Thermal Direct™. Thermal Direct™ provides electric utilities with the methodology to replace the calculated, or estimated, temperature of their conductors with precise, actual temperatures. The associated decrease in the margin of error enables utilities to: improve system reliability and capacity; enhance the security of transmission assets; demonstrate compliance with applicable regulatory requirements; and reduce mitigation costs associated with compliance by as much as $2 billion over a three year period. In recent testing Thermal Direct’s accuracy presented a 95 percent confidence level, with residual error of 2.09°C.

Inspecting the distribution system for safe operation and clearances is equally cumbersome. So URMC married advanced technologies with simple processes to gather both types of these critical data sets at the same time. Doing so reduces costs, improves safety, and for asset-based-recovery utilities could increase revenue.

stalled sturdy metal foundations to support various structures. With proprietary and patented foundation designs and installation processes, we have successfully installed more than 200,000 steel foundations.

Q: What makes your company and product unique?

A: Metal Foundations holds numerous patents for various steel foundation designs and installation processes. Metal Foundations continues to lead the industry as the most reliable, and truly innovative alternative to concrete foundations.

Q: What are a few of the benefits of using your product?

A: The biggest benefit is the time and cost savings we offer. Our foundations are installed in less than half the time it takes to install standard concrete foundations, and our clients save an average of 30 percent of the costs associated with concrete foundation installations. Q: How can you install your foundations so quickly? A: No concrete is required to install our

methods. This increased efficiency directly saves on labor costs and construction delays.

• Safety. The hydraulic Swage tool is so easy to use that your crews can be trained and installing in less than 30 minutes. And because there are no explosions, toxic fumes, dangerous flames, or cumbersome equipment to carry around, crews are safe and efficient.

Q: Who are your typical customers for this?

A: We primarily sell to OEMs and their primary and secondary suppliers. Many of the names of our customers you would recognize in the marketplace today. We are thankful to have a very loyal customer base that is continually growing.

Q: Do you see any demand trends from your customer base?

A: Sustainability. Demand trends from customers continue to evolve with the development of new products that require higher performance and highest quality level at a good price. Last year’s Tsunami in Japan forced both Rubadue and our customers to look for alternate best solutions beyond specific materials to offer the best solutions as supply chain issues are becoming more prevalent with all of

foundations, therefore all of the time-consuming and costly procedures associated with the installation, curing and testing of concrete are eliminated.

Q: How do you save your clients that much money?

A: In this industry, time is money. Metal Foundations proprietary designs and installation processes eliminates all the time-consuming procedures necessary to install concrete. For example, our unique processes eliminate the need for large excavations, which are not only dangerous, but take a lot of time and can be very expensive. We require minimal manpower and equipment—saving our clients a significant amount of labor and equipment costs. We also reuse soil for backfill— eliminating the time and expense necessary to haul away spoil. Q: Are there other reasons someone might choose your steel foundations over standard concrete foundations?

A: Our foundations are pre-engineered, delivered to the job site ready to install, and your structure can be mounted immediately—the same day in most cases. We can quickly install our foundations in any connectors are.

• All weather installation. It doesn’t matter if there is rain, snow, wind or ice, the DMC Power Swage tool allows the user to install in any weather condition on the job site without delaying the construction schedule.

• Lower lifetime cost. From the initial labor savings, lack of weather related delays, immediate inspection and no ongoing maintenance required, the Swage system saves customers money throughout the entire life of the connector. • Short lead times and custom solutions. Modular design of the connectors allows

our customers. A trend in electronics is as finished products get smaller, temperature requirements increase and specifications tighten.

Better products, more diverse products, and alternative options to keep production rolling have created more demands as well as opportunities. Seeing companies globally accepting responsibility for safety, as well as how the environment is affected by processes and materials, is a very positive move. Q: What benefits and challenges do you face being an American manufacturer in a global market?

A: To be alive in the manufacturing business today is to be in a global market. We benefit as an American manufacturer in the global marketplace because of our reputation for quality

A: We developed Induraguard 9200 to be the most cost-effective coating [often one coat] to fight corrosion on weathered galvanized or corroded carbon steel T&D structures. This product is high build, easyto-use, has excellent wetting properties and provides unrivaled barrier protection that is all based on a totally sustainable resin system derived from plant material. The barrier protection is so good because of the synergistic properties provided by the proven pigment package or ingredients, some of which date all the way back to paints used by the ancient Greeks!

Q: Is this coating safe for painter?

A: We have a complete systems approach to all T&D coatings needs; including flow-coatings and moisture cured tower footings [below grade]. We like to think our product line contains some old and some new technology. Q: Are there locations one could see this coating in use?

connectors know that they will achieve an extremely reliable connection. This is not chance, BURNDY understands how critical an effective connection is to any electrical system, and designs that effectiveness into their connection systems— the connector, tool, and die designed as a system. For transmission applications, “overlapping crimps” is the normal method for compressing deadends, splices, and jumper terminals. For all applications, BURNDY ensures that an appropriate ‘compression ratio’ is achieved between the connector and conductor, to optimize the lifetime of the connection,

comprehensive design service to our clients achieving the best results when addressing specific fire or blast protection problems. DuraSystems also provides construction detailing, special project orientated products and system testing which enables DuraSystems to manufacture custom-built solutions tailored to our client needs. DuraSystems custom designs and installs fire and blast walls, doors, barriers, cable trays, ventilation, and other passive fire protection systems. These passive systems protect personnel and property, which have been tested to the most stringent industry codes and standards. About DuraSteel DuraSteel is the most stringently tested

apply the appropriate force, and result in the best-finished connection surface. The BURNDY engineering team, after listening to the issues faced in the field, developed a family of 60 ton crimping dies with increased crimping widths and indicia marks. This resulted in a much improved installation practice for transmission connector installers and a decrease in per-connector installation time. By providing indicia marks on the die surface, a slight embossment is created on the crimped connector, providing the installer with the start location for the next overlapping crimp consistently—every time. By increasing crimping widths without sacrificing the compression ratio, in-

stallation time is reduced. The result is a dependable, quality installation requiring less crimps per connector, which also eliminates the guesswork. Just another BURNDY innovation in crimping die development! And, coming soon, a portable and light weight 60 Ton Remote Hydraulic Press! The Y60LW, at only 43 pounds, is the ultimate in crimping power at an optimized weight. Accepting the Wide L-Dies as described above, this remote crimp press has a large jaw opening to accommodate copper and aluminum code cables and aerial conductor sizes through 2500 kcmil and also ACSR through 2156 (84/19 str.) This press has 60 tons of crimp force at 10,000 psi

material in the passive fire protection sector and its applications in the various industries. DuraSteel has been tested for its resistance to fire, blast, impact, moisture, mold, physical strength, water tightness, sound attenuation, radiant heat and pressures. DuraSteel properties make it ideal for the design and construction of passive fire protection systems and applications to protect workplace injuries from fire and blast. DuraSteel non-combustible properties provide compartmentalization, fire separation and migration. DuraSteel robust noncorrosive construction makes it an ideal material for both interior and exterior use to protect personnel and property. DuraSteel can be painted for aesthetic purposes. DuraSteel is a unique non-combustible material consisting of two metal sheets, galvanized or stainless

steel, mechanically bonded to a cement fibre core. DuraSteel is exceptionally robust, resistant to impact, fire & blast, reduces sound, unaffected by moisture and once installed requires minimal maintenance and have a life expectancy of up to 40 years even in the most severe environments. By combining lightweight and durable materials to make the facing layers and core, DuraSteel assemblies require minimal foundations for support. DuraSteel is essential for assemblies such as fire & blast barriers, enclosures, fire & blast doors, cable trays, duct assemblies. DuraSteel sheets have been tested to withstand a fourhour fire test, hose stream test and 2Bar of post blast pressure. Features & Benefits • 4-hour fire protection
