Hydraulic and motor fluids do not wear out–they just get dirty. Many contaminants exist in today’s hydraulic fluid and lubricating systems. Water infiltrates hydraulic systems continuously as fluid is used and stored–and copper, iron, aluminum, and chromium particles are commonly present in the fluids from wear of system components. Those elements combine to damage the hydraulic systems and necessitate premature replacement continued on page 60

Denmar Pump Services, Inc. Celebrates 10 Years

Denmar Pump Services, Inc. just celebrated its anniversary and they are proud to have delivered a reliable service with the integrity of their production never compromised in the past 10 years. When Mark Trahan and Dennis Thomas started

this company in 2002, they shared the vision of ensuring excellence in production through attention to detail at each phase by having the capabilities and knowledge in-house so that quality has become synonymous with their brand. Prior to starting Denmar Pump Services, they both began their careers at Ingersoll-Rand till corporate decisions were made to retract the pump repair division at the Walpole, Mass., location. Consequently, it left many of their customers with equipment still needing to be serviced. Due to their customers’ needs Thomas and Trahan opened their doors to Pramco, which was driven by their passion to continue to support and carry out the quality services and products that was expected and deserved. When Pramco first started in 1992, they were mainly servicing repair for small to medium duty

Q: Who are the typical users for Group CBS products?

A: Utilities and heavy power users of all types currently represent our customer base. We have been in business for more than 30 years and there is not an industry or large company in the United States that we have not done work with. Our products are widely accepted and used by every generating utility in the U.S. and all the fortune 500 manufacturers. Q: What makes your business unique?

pumps. However, due to their experience and reputation in the pump industry, which includes more than 40 years of combined experience with IngersollRand they were asked to join forces with a larger corporation to open and run their pump repair division. Unfortunately, this was a short endeavor and after five years when their contract ended corporate decided to close their pump division, allowing them to pick up where they left off and thus the origin of Denmar Pump Services had commenced. Thomas and Trahan already had the previous experience to know their vision would remain the same as it was at Pramco, but with that awareness they also knew what they wanted to do differently. They had particular skill sets acquired from their experience at Ingersoll-Rand and they wanted to utilize their pump expertise within the heavy iron industries. From the beginning it was a priority for Denmar to have the capabilities to handle the level of work required within the power generation

industries and as they progress they strive to cater to their diverse needs. In 2005, Trahan became the sole owner and as a result he only wanted to continue to meet his own high standards of service without forfeiting the quality of process Denmar stands behind. They recognize that it is impossible to better themselves by remaining stagnant, which is why they are constantly looking at where improvements can be made and how they can grow to better support their customers. Specifically, this year they have already increased their support, sales, machining and field capabilities. Their mission is to be the leading provider of design, repair and service, by offering consistent and reliable solutions in conjunction with high quality products and extensive knowledge in the industry. Everyday Denmar and its employees strive to meet these goals and deliver above and beyond any client’s expectations. For more information, stop by Booth #547 or visit www.denmarpump.com.

Today we see more of a run-to-failure operating mode and reactionary approaches after an event happens in a facility and the unit shuts down with associated loss of production. Keystone XL Pipeline is Early Opportunity for more Jobs By Bill Bush

WASHINGTON—API Executive Vice President Marty Durbin told reporters that American voters have shown strong support for building the Keystone XL pipeline and that the project represents an early and major opportunity for President Obama to boost job creation and spur economic growth: “President Obama campaigned on job creation and on an all-of-the-above energy strategy, including more oil and natural gas. And our exit polls last week showed that’s where voters are as well: • 73 percent support more American production of oil and natural gas • 91 percent believe that production will lead to more American jobs, and • 75 percent support building the Keystone XL Pipeline

So as the president looks for opportunities to provide a quick boost to the economy and strengthen our energy security, we again urge him to approve the full Keystone XL Pipeline as soon as possible. “ “The government’s own projec-

tions show that oil and natural gas will continue to provide a majority of our energy for decades to come. So if we can source more of that energy from right here in North America while creating jobs and generating government revenue, approving the Keystone XL pipeline should be an easy decision. Given the project had the support of bipartisan majorities in both the House and Senate, the president should give voters what they asked for and approve the project at the earliest possible opportunity.” API is a national trade association that represents all segments of America’s technology-driven oil and natural gas industry. Its more than 500 members – including large integrated companies, exploration and production, refining, marketing, pipeline, and marine businesses, and service and supply firms – provide most of the nation’s energy. The industry also supports 9.2 million U.S. jobs and 7.7 percent of the U.S. economy, delivers $86 million a day in revenue to our government, and, since 2000, has invested more than $2 trillion in U.S. capital projects to advance all forms of energy, including alternatives.

of hydraulic fluid. Lubricating oil breaks down for a number of reasons. Motor oil, for example, collects and suspends acids, water, fuel and air-borne contaminants. Contamination control is the key to preventing most equipment failures. The Conserver purification system can significantly reduce water and other volatiles– as well as particulates–in a fluid and, by maintaining cleaner, dryer fluid, entire cycles of fluid replacement can be eliminated, equipment downtime can be substantially reduced, and the equipment can operate more frequently and efficiently. Those factors combine to provide re-

Only highstress or damage prone areas of a part need to be treated. The process can mitigate FOD in the leading edge of a blade, fretting in the dovetail or fir tree joint, and SCC in the low-pressure stages prone to corrosion, all with the same technique.

Application produces a depth of compression ranging from a few thousandths of an inch to over a full centimeter. For components like turbine blade edges, special tools are used to provide throughthickness compression. Other tool designs are also available for tight radii and restricted geometries, such as dovetails.

Dodge Sleevoil hydrodynamic bearings are high performance products with a long history of use in industrial fan applications dating back to the 1930’s. Today, Sleevoil bearings are widely specified for industrial fans when uptime, reliability, and ease of maintenance is a must. Sleevoil bearings are commonly found in the power generation, cement, pulp, paper, petrochemical, and steel industries. Customers in these industries rely on the superior performance of the

bearing and its unique internal cooling options to keep their plant running in the most extreme conditions. To further enhance the existing Sleevoil product line, Dodge is launching several new Sleevoil bearing components. These components can be utilized on existing Sleevoil installations or ordered with new Sleevoil pillow blocks and liners. The Dodge OLF and Cool Lube circulating oil systems have also been redesigned and offer new features and performance enhancements.

improve damage tolerance and component performance. Low cold working provides both thermal and mechanical stability of the beneficial compression. Traditional methods like shot peening produce only a shallow layer of protection with a rough and highly cold worked surface. We offer practical, cost-effective, shop floor logistically compatible processes that provide reliable performance improvement without altering either the material or design. bots. Processing only takes a few minutes, and with robotic integration, it can even be performed in-situ. This is particularly beneficial for unscheduled maintenance. Computer control also ensures absolute repeatability. The closed loop process control system exceeds Six Sigma quality standards and statistical process control data is collected constantly.

Our techniques provide deeper, stronger and more stable protection for critical parts.

Q: How can our readers find out more about your company?

Unlike other surface enhancement methods, our processes only induce the minimal amount of cold working needed to create the necessary level of protection to

duced maintenance costs and many added years of life for the equipment. The Conserver purification system removes and neutralizes those contaminants, including free water and emulsion–the most significant contaminant that exists in systems today. Water reduces the life of the fluids–damages bearings–causes corrosion, oxidation, and additive depletion–reduces viscosity, and more. By reducing water in the fluid, the Conserver purification system extends the fluid drainage period up to 10 times and increases the life of system components by as much as 75 percent. The Conserver purification system operates through a highly advanced two stage system to continuously keep oil and hydraulic fluid clean and extend the life

cycle of such fluids. The first stage is a specially designed micro glass media having a BETA=3000 with 99.97 percent efficiency for particle sizes of 3 microns or more. This particular cut-off point for particle removal was chosen so as to remove damaging particles, while not having an adverse effect on the important components of the fluid, including additives. The second stage is the Conserver purification system’s patented moisture removal chamber. The fluid passes through the evaporation chamber where water and other volatiles are separated and removed from the fluid. The Conserver purification system also reduces the dumping of used petroleum and related fluids, which are a major

contributor to the destruction of our ecosystem. Statistics show that almost half of used oil ends up in landfills, sewers or directly in the environment. It has further been reported that oil concentrations as small as 1 ppm can contaminate drinking water supplies for 50 families for up to one year and the harmful effects on mammals and birds include toxic contamination, destruction of central nervous systems and destruction of the food supply. By reducing wasteful disposal and dumping of our limited natural resources, the Conserver purification system reduces the dangers to our environment and increases the useful life of fluids and the equipment that uses those fluids. Once Through Steam Generators for Power Generation Their “Once Through Steam Generator” technology has earned the reputation as a

67 simple and cost effective solution to help owners and operators generate more for their plants. OTSGs avoid the complications of boil out and chemical cleaning, and eliminate the operational headaches related to the control of blowdown systems and steam drum levels. Further, since the unit is designed to run hot and dry, there is no by-pass stack required leading to heat loss and maintenance, giving the OTSG a much smaller footprint and offering significant additional cost savings. The unique modular design of OTSG technology lends itself to rapid installation with lower costs when compared to conventional drum-type HRSG technology.

Once Through Steam Generators for Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) The game changing 90 percent steam quality SQ90™ OTSG is designed to in-

crease dry steam rate and reduce fuel consumption – while using the same boiler feedwater rate. SQ90 also significantly reduces blowdown (by more than 60 percent) so wastewater disposal is decreased leading to less impact on the environment. SQ90 units deliver a higher profit potential with no additional risk, plus these added benefits: • More separated steam from less feedwater • Lower fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions • Significant reduction of blowdown and handling costs • Same boiler feedwater quality as a 75 continued on page 69

sion all in one frame. With the ability to shave with any dry ice media – from standard block, 3 millimeter pellets, nuggets, slices and even leftover scrap ice; or direct feed standard pellets – the SDI Select 60 offers unrivaled cleaning performance and eliminates worries about dry ice availability. “Professional contract cleaners know the importance of being able to dial in to the exact clean needed for the variability with each new application or job,” said Darren George, Director of Business Development at Cold Jet. “With Cold Jet’s new SDI Select 60, contractors have the ability to dust the finest smoke-damaged surfaces and clean high-end hydro generators with the delicacy of shaved dry ice, or ramp up the aggression by using full 3 millimeter pellets when faced with tougher applications. For the first time, contractors can navigate a full spectrum of dry ice cleaning solutions with one unit. And, they no longer have to worry about whether they can find the appropriate type of dry ice as all forms work effectively.”

Showcasing Cold Jet’s patented shaved ice technology, the SDI Select 60 can clean large surfaces of thin, hard contaminants, without damaging the substrate. And when faced with heavier contaminants, the operator can simply bypass the shaving media, turn up the aggression and clean using full 3 millimeter pellets. “We shaved both block ice and rice pellets with ease and experienced no issues,” said Heath. “The possibility of performing three different types of dry ice cleaning with one machine is very compelling for us. Generator cleaning projects require some very delicate cleaning for some areas, but other areas can tolerate more aggressive cleaning. The SDI Select 60 provides the full spectrum of cleaning capability in one easy to use package. The ability to use all of the Aero style nozzles while performing dry ice dusting activities is also a plus. Once again, Cold Jet seems to be making the impossible a little easier to achieve.” The SDI Select 60 is 24 inches x 28 inches x 43 inches in size, weighs 343 pounds, operates from 20 psi to 250 psi

and has a 60 pound hopper capacity with a feed rate of 0-6 pounds per minute.
