They had years of experience designing and manufacturing electric powered aircraft tugs (JETporter) and were approached to put their expertise into helicopter tugs. They went out and interviewed numerous people who operated other brands of tugs and asked what they liked and didn’t like about how their helicopters were being handled. From there they set out to design and build a tug that made moving helicopters much easier and safer while only requiring one person! MENOMINEE, Mich.—As of Dec. 27, 2012, Chongqing Helicopter Investment Co., Ltd (CQHIC), located in Chongqing, China has acquired Enstrom Helicopter Corporation, moving from one foreign owner to another. Chongqing is the fourth largest metropolitan area in China. CQHIC is focused on helping Enstrom expand its reach into China and the rest of the world. The number of helicopters in Asia repre-

This strong ownership will allow further growth of our business in Menominee, Mich., to meet the demands of the increasing markets around the world, especially Asia.” Enstrom has seen a 50 percent growth in employment over the past 18 months, and with the new ownership will continue to grow to meet current and future demands. and most efficient way to move their helicopters. They take pride in saying that their tugs were designed by the customer for the customer. Their motto is never ending improvement. As part of their vision they wanted a vehicle that was all weather capable. They use soft solid rubber tires with a deep tread pattern. They also have chains specially made for their vehicles which provide superior traction in snow and ice. Helicopters are a valuable investment. That’s why Tiger Tugs chose smooth powerful electric motors controlled by the latest state of the art motor controllers operating through heavy duty industrial

transaxles. Operation is extremely smooth at all throttle settings. You can creep their tugs smoothly at just millimeters at a time or run across the ramp at more than 3 mph. All without any jerkiness, sudden starts or stops. Tiger Tugs produces three different models. Their model 5.0 which is designed to move helicopters weighing up to 5,000 pounds, their model 8.0 which moves helicopters weighing up to 8,000 pounds, and their model 8.0B which is the safest and easiest design out there for moving the Bell 429. They also have a new design under development for handling the MD 500/600 helicopters. Cur-

rently the only way to pick up this type of helicopter is by the skids. The feedback they are getting is this is not an ideal way to handle that helicopter because the skids and struts are very springy and when going over hangar rails, bumps or cracks has the helicopter bouncing around like a rowboat on the ocean which is not safe and very hard on the undercarriage. Tiger Tugs are designed for one person operation while being safe and reliable for many years to come. They offer a simple design with powerful results. ralock fasteners delivered 50 uses with no loss of locking performance. For the current Cassini-Huygens mission across 750 million miles of space, NASA used the Spiralock thread form to resist vibration and temperature-induced thread loosening on mass spectrometer instrumentation used for atmospheric measurement of Saturn and Titan. Together in the Cassini orbiter and Huygens probe, several hundred fasteners had to maintain vacuum-tight sealed cavities from final assembly and testing through launch, until the end of the mission. To better serve customers’ evolving needs, Spiralock engineers work on new product designs addressing developments in the aerospace and spaceflight industry. Current industry trends show ongoing efforts to increase fuel efficiency, tactical

mobility, and payload capacity in aerospace design, driving engineers to find numerous ways to reduce mass through the extensive use of lightweight materials such as composites, aluminum, and plastics. In most structural joints using lightweight materials, the parent material needs to be reinforced through the use of a wire insert, molded/potted insert or ultrasonic insert. Spiralock offers all of these products with its unique thread which allows for superior locking performance when compared to standard threads and prevailing torque threads. Spiralock is part of Emhart Teknologies, a Stanley Black & Decker company. Spiralock self-locking fasteners hold mission-critical equipment securely fastened under the most extreme conditions. Spiralock’s innovative thread design features a 30 degree wedge ramp at the root of the female thread which allows the bolt to spin freely relative to female threads until clamp load is applied. The crests of the standard male thread form are then drawn tightly against the wedge ramp, eliminating radial gap clearances and creating a continuous spiral line contact along the entire length of the thread engagement. This continuous line contact spreads the clamp force more evenly over all engaged threads, improving resistance to vibrational loosening, axial-

TEGAM’s Model R1L-E2A has five ranges with full-scale values ranging from 2 milliohms to 20 ohms. Resolution on the lowest range is 1 micro-ohm. Accuracy is 0.1 percent of reading ± 2 counts. The standard pistol grip probes make four-wire Kelvin measurements. The torsional loading, joint fatigue, and temperature extremes. Further benefits of Spiralock include reduction of galling between screw and fastener and extended reusability for exceptional product longevity. NASA was among the first to appreciate the advantages of the Spiralock thread, when designing the main engines of the Shuttle orbiter. Each of the three main engines develops 400,000 pounds of thrust and terrific vibration. But the Space Agency also wanted a 15-cycle reuse capability per fastener. Under its own test, NASA determined the fasteners in Spiralock-threaded holes did not back off or loosen when subjected to 10 times shuttle-specified vibrations, and they stayed that way 10 times longer than called for. Q: Please start by telling us a bit about the company and what you do.

instruments for a fleet of Dash 7 aircraft. The customer was able to install the suite upon delivery with zero modifications to the aircraft.

Q: What would you say makes your business unique?

A: Howell Instruments is primarily an engineering company with complete manufacturing capabilities. We have a very rich history rooted in customer problem solving, and that’s really what we’re about. Our engineers work in the aviation community listening to pilots, maintainers and managers. Once a specific problem is defined, they collaborate with the end-user and design, develop and deliver a solution. We recently designed and built a customized ‘plug and play’ suite of upgraded engine

A: Two things: agility and experience. We are a small company with a wellrounded talent pool and tremendous manufacturing capability. We can operate profitably with smaller production runs than larger companies, so we’re successful with highly specialized projects. On the other hand, our infrastructure allows for virtually 100 percent growth in a very short amount of time—enabling us to systematically increase output to meet our full capacity. And that is backed by six decades of experience building prod-

hundreds of very happy customers.

Q: Are you introducing any new products at the show?

Q: What exactly do you mean by ‘The Laversab Advantage?’

A: It’s really quite simple. Laversab provides highly reliable products that are easy to use. In addition to this, we provide outstanding service and support to our customers all over the world. We provide free on-site training and all the help a customer may need with accessories like aircraft adapters and hose-kits. Our products need to be calibrated annually.

ucts for an incredibly diverse customer base – U.S. commercial and Department of Defense, private aviation, as well as international commercial and government agencies. Very few companies combine that level of technical expertise, production experience, manufacturing resources and market presence all in one place.

Q: What’s your focus going forward?

A: The big picture will always be supporting our customers and growing our business. But in the current economic environment, it’s also critical to stick with our core competencies. We’ve been hugely successful in extracting and accurately processing gas turbine engine information and presenting it to operators in a useable format. Even This calibration can be done by any of our 14 authorized service centers, located in different parts of the world, with a typical turn-around time of two to three days. Our distributors and service centers can also provide loaner units, free of charge, if a customer ever has any problems.

the most advanced technologies still require traditional engine parameters to facilitate real-time information. With recent improvements in real-time diagnostic/prognostic algorithms, parametric accuracy is paramount, and that’s where our expertise comes into play. I’d like to invest our efforts into forging partnerships with larger firms. Partnering with larger companies will enable us to expand our business while broadening our customer support. That’s a winning scenario for Howell, our partners and the entire aviation community. Q: How can our readers find out more about your company?
