Patch Holes in Copper and Aluminum Tubing Fast and Easy

Holes (leaks) occur in tubing in a variety of ways; screws and nails are driven into the tubing, vibration against another tube or surface, and sometimes new and old tubing has micro leaks. Regardless of how they occur holes are a problem, they are always aggravating, and sometimes very difficult to repair. Jackson Industries has developed two exclusive patching systems for copper and aluminum tubing. PATCH-RITE high strength patches are for the high pressure side of the HVAC/R systems. PATCH-RITE is rated at 1200 psi and 65 degrees to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. PATCH-RITE is compatible with all refrigerants and oils including R410A and POE oil. PATCH-RITE is fast and easy to use and the system can be recharged in 20 minutes after making the patch. PATCH-RITE patches are available in four basic sizes—3/8 inch, 5/8 inch, 7/8 inch and 1-1/8 inch. These four sizes cover more than 90 percent of the leaks in apartment, small business, and residential HVAC/R tubing systems. The 350 F continuous high temperature range also makes PATCH-RITE ideal for all hydro heating systems. The high temperature capability permits patching holes in tubing carrying water

and steam. The second patching system, INSTA-HVAC PATCH, is for the low side of HVAC/R systems. It is ideal for copper and aluminum coils, and can be used on all types of surfaces—round, flat, and uneven. INSTA-HVAC PATCH can be used to extend the life of older air conditioning systems where it is not cost effective to replace a coil. A patch can be made in less than a minute, and the system can be turned back on in 20 minutes after making the repair. INSTA-HVAC PATCH can also be used to repair leaks in galvanized, copper, and PVC condensate lines. Jackson Industries, Inc. is devoted to creating and distributing products that solve problems in the HVAC/R and plumbing industries. Other HVAC/R products manufactured and distributed by Jackson Industries include HVAC/R SUPER PRO Braze-less bond for copper continued on page 48

Q: How does the NexTraq Fleet Tracking solution benefit the HVAC/HVACR Industry?

A: One of the key industries we see benefit the most from the NexTraq solution is the HVAC industry. HVAC companies typically make numerous stops throughout the day—we can help them be more efficient, ultimately increasing service revenue while decreasing costs. How? By automating processes through fleet tracking technology, companies can increase the amount of jobs done in a day, provide the most efficient routes for drivers and improve customer service with accurate ETAs. The days of vague service windows are over and savvy consumers will move on to a competitor that can provide superior service. The main overhead costs that any HVAC business owner with a fleet is concerned about are fuel, labor, maintenance and insurance. Implementing the NexTraq Fleet Tracking solution has proven to reduce fuel costs by up to 20 percent while increasing productivity. Q: Can you substantiate these benefits with real-world results showing ROI?

A: Sure. One HVAC customer, Shumate Mechanical, was able to increase service revenue by 9 percent while decreasing payroll expenses by 12 percent with accurate labor costs—all while improving customer service.

With (5) inputs and (7) outputs to configure the possibilities are endless. Here are just a few. 1. One single stage controller with history and graphics 2. Five single stage controllers with history and graphics 3. One five stage controller with history and graphics 4. A thermostat, humidistat, a CO2 monitor and a differential night air thermostat all at the same time 5. A compressor controller with history and graphics continued on page 63

Another customer, Estes Heating & Air Conditioning, increased driver productivity by 13 percent.

Their benefit was two-fold: they were able to help more customers and get their employees home faster at the end of the day. And these examples are really just the tip of the iceberg.

Q: What makes NexTraq different from other providers?

A: I’d like to answer that two different ways. First, we are first-to-market on all technology in the fleet tracking industry. We were the first to offer oneminute reporting on vehicles, the first to integrate a dispatching application in our solution and the first-to-use Google Maps technology—just to name a few. We have also just launched NexTraq Connect, our mobile app, to make it easier to stay connected when out in the field. It was wonderful to see this solidified when we won the Innovation Award at AHR Expo.

Second, we have the most reliable software and hardware in the industry. Our solution works, period. And we develop our own hardware to ensure it’s of the highest quality. There are no surprises with NexTraq—which is why we have a 95 percent customer referral rate. Q: How can our readers find out more about your company?

A: Readers can visit our website www.nextraq.com, stop by Booth #3126 at the AHR Expo or call 800-358-6178.

the previous multi-zoned system capacity of up to 36,000 Btu/h. Previously branded as Flex Multi, the new MULTI F product offering also includes the dual-, tri- and quad-zone versions of the heat pump system. Adding branch distribution to LG’s multi-zone portfolio effectively doubles the number of potential temperature control zones available, enabling MULTI F MAX to provide up to eight individual zones for customized comfort. In addition to gains in system capacity and configuration options, the new MULTI F MAX also features engineering and design updates that deliver increased efficiency ratings, decreased noise levels and improved piping capabilities, while maintaining existing MULTI F system footprint and approximate weight.

ran the global analytics team at Merrill Lynch and later became the head of Algorithmic trading desk for Bear Stearns in 2006. He has a BA in Mathematics from University of California at Berkeley.

Q: Your company, GridNavigator, introduced the industry’s first intraday energy forecasting service less than a year ago. What are the primary benefits for your customers and partners?

A: The ‘Traditional’ demand management is usually done by just looking at quasi-realtime values (either campus/building demand, or utility demand) and then doing demand management at that time. The demand LIMIT is usually set lower than the true target, so that the controls have time to operate and shed loads or limit power usage. The BMS is always ‘working behind’ – it is never in front of energy usage; it is always reactive, with gross controls. The idea of forecasting demand is that you not only know what you will peak, but you will know when you will peak, and the rate-ofchange of your usage and demand. This allows the Building Automation System to do

JACE will allow easy migration to Niagara 4 when the software is released. The appearance comes on the heels of several notable achievements achieved in the last quarter of 2012. The company announced that its Niagara Framework has surpassed 350,000 instances deployed worldwide and it received two significant industry accolades. Tridium received the 2012 Oracle Excellence Award: Java Busi-

“Our newest MULTI F system addresses the growing popularity of multi-zone heating and cooling systems in commercial building projects. And it’s a testament to LG’s ability to combine the benefits of VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow) technology with innovative system design to address market demand and emerging applications,” said Kevin McNamara, vice president, Commercial Air Conditioning, LG Electronics USA. “By combining increased capacity, design flexibility and energy efficiency with the potential for decreased installation and lifecycle costs, our newest MULTI F system provides a compelling value proposition to building designers, owners and managers.” As with LG’s dual-, tri- and quadzone MULTI F systems, the new MULTI F MAX offers a range of indoor unit options that can be customized based on

more intelligent controls: widen setpoints, but only for as long as necessary to get through a demand peak; intelligently shed loads or reset CHW or HW supplies; limit flows, clamp air exchanges and limit maximum flows, etc. With predictive control, the operations do not have to be as ‘bang-bang’ and control as gross as with the traditional demand management approach that only relies on latent values. Much more occupant comfort is possible, and finer controls can be achieved. Some critical peak situations, where the peaks are predicted to be short, would have little effect on occupant comfort, whereas traditional demand management would have initiated more Draconian equipment shutdowns, and the concomitant discomfort for humans. Q: I understand that the forecasting service is based on analytic models developed for the financial services industry, your previous industry. How did you come to apply this to the energy market?

A: We noticed that most energy forecasting tools in the market are based on the static characteristics of the buildings like square footage, number of tenants, type of construction and HVAC system and completely overlook the dynamic behavior of the build-

structural design and application needs. For engineers, building owners and system installers evaluating multi-zone HVAC options, LG cites additional benefits for the new MULTI F MAX system, including:

Increased Capacity & Configuration Options • Creative piping schemes with single gas and liquid pipe connections enable common piping into buildings. • Larger pipes and connections reduce overall piping needs while allowing more efficient refrigerant pumping and system operation; simultaneously increasing system capacity while decreasing piping complexity and potential limitations. • The introduction of Branch Distribution Units increases not only overall zone capability, but also the ability to reach zones that are much further away from the MULTI F outdoor unit.

ing. We believe the only accurate forecast of energy should be based on the historical 15 minute energy usage and predicted weather and temperature. In the mathematics terms this is called ‘time series’ analysis and it has been widely used in the electronic trading industry. Q: What is intraday forecasting? What is the benefit?

A: Our Algorithmic Data Engine crunches the energy data every hour and self adjusts the forecast at every hour. We publish the first set of the forecast points at 1 a.m. and then every hour from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. we recalculate and republish the points. If an unexpected demand event occurs at 8:37 a.m. then the new forecast points at 9 a.m. warns of any demand spikes in the coming hours. The peak demand is detected based on a few short spikes leading into that event. Q: What is the process for setting up the energy forecasting service?

A: BACnetXchange server setup is very easy and does not compromise the client’s firewall and technology stack. We can read the energy (KWh) and demand (KW) points

Cost Savings • The potential for reduced installation costs due to lower material, electrical and labor costs associated with using more efficient, easier piping schemes with larger pipes and less materials required. • With increased system capacity and reach, fewer systems are required to cover larger build projects. Increased Energy Efficiency • Strong AHRI Certified ratings and an improved Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) of up to 18.4.

from BMS and if your BMS doesn’t have a sub-meter at the main panel then we can install the CTs and sub-meters very quickly without any downtime. The intraday forecast service requires three to four weeks of data collection before it is fully functional. Q: You have customers in a lot of sectors including education, healthcare, property management and retail. Beyond forecasting, what other services is GridNavigator focused on for 2014?

A: BACnetXchange services the high-rise buildings, office parks and campuses. We also have a fully integrated Energy Management System (EMS) for the smaller buildings and the chain retails that monitors, controls and optimizes energy usage. We designed and built ‘Looche,’ our lighting control system that can dim each LED lamp individually or use ambient sensors for the daylight harvesting practice.
