ASI’s Acoustic Wall Panels Complete A Dream Home Theater Four Years In The Making

RICHMOND, Va. — For years, Jeff Autor of Houston, Texas dreamed of having a state of the art home theater. After some careful planning and in-depth research, he was able to construct the viewing room of his dreams with acoustical treatment from Acoustical Solutions, Inc. “My home theater journey finally began in 2008, when I decided to bite the bullet and build a new home,” said Autor, “after doing a lot of searching and pricing, it became clear that if I wanted a dedicated theater, I was going to have to build new and custom.” Attention was paid to every detail of the space. With a project of this scale, everything from the color palette and woodwork to the sound system and seating had to be as Autor imagined it. If he was going to finally make this dream theater a reality, he wanted to do it right. Autor knew that he would have to do some level of soundproofing to keep from disturbing other areas of the house or neighborhood. The 16 foot x 22 foot unfinished space, would also need noise control for optimum sound quality inside the theater. When Autor looked for acoustical treatment, he did a lot of shopping around. He wanted the products to

improve acoustics and look great with the design he had in mind: “as part of the design and color selection…and having seen the SoundSuede at an installation, I really liked that look. Perhaps it’s the commercial look and feel of the fabric patterns that sent me in that direction.” Acoustical Solutions Architectural Sales Representative Aaron Duncan was first acquainted with Jeff Autor at a trade show, the CEDIA EXPO, in Indianapolis. “Roaming the show floor at CEDIA helped a lot,” said Autor, “I took my thoughts to the vendors’ booths. The guys at Acoustical Solutions (Aaron Duncan) were very helpful, took a look at the plans, offered some advice, and sent me samples of both the fabrics and the edge finishes. After some comparison shopping, that’s who I went with.” Autor used 1 inch thick SoundSuede fabric wrapped acoustical panels in the color Cordovan from Acoustical Solutions to cover upper and lower levels of his theater walls. SoundSuede panels have a noise reduction coefficient of up to 1.15, meaning that they absorb virtually all sound waves reaching the panel eliminating the chance of reverberation continued on page 29

von Heydekampf Pushes For Control With New myMix Remote Control Software Audio veteran, Mathias von Heydekampf, owner and manufacturer of myMix updates us on the evolution of myMix and the exciting new addition to the family.

Q: The myMix personal monitoring and recording system is now at its third InfoComm Show. What can you say after two years of market experience?

A: MyMix has seen a tremendous growth rate over the past couple years because it sets a new standard in personal monitor mixers. We listened to customer needs, helped establish a new market category and developed real-world solutions. As a result, myMix has become a leader. The praise for myMix is very consistent and confirms exactly what we wanted to achieve with this product: amazing

sound, ease of use; versatility of using it as a stand-alone or integrating it into an existing system; its scalability of system size, the ability to record and play back in multi-track—myMix really does offer TOTAL CONTROL on so many different levels. Any musician, at any performing level, benefits from myMix. Everyone performs better because no one is fighting for audio space.

The audio quality of myMix simply amazes people every time they try it. To our knowledge, we are the only company that offers integrated stereo effects for a three-dimensional sound image. When you listen through in-ear monitors, you need effects: tone control and panning in order to get the sound right. There is simply no listening fatigue with myMix. You

First Time Exhibitor DC Connect Introduces InfoComm To [i]cell Technology—A Hands Off Gesture Interface First time exhibitor DC Connect (Booth #N877) comes to infoComm2012 with a unique interactive technology called ‘[i]cells.’ [i]cells are a ‘no touch’ gesture and proximity activated interface. They are used in display interactives with a variety of content and can be programmed to have a variety of behaviors. The technology gets the user out of the monitor frame of a touch screen and into a human scale interface they can explore, browse and control at their own pace and where their interest leads them.

How It Works The approximate 6 inch x 6 inch cell tiles light up when triggered by the wave of a hand, responding to electro-

static sensitivity and sends a signal to a PC. The sensing technology allows the cells to be placed behind a variety of surfaces such as fabric, acrylic or glass and still be able to activate. A graphic is printed or mounted on these translucent surfaces to help guide the user through the content. The signal sent to the computer starts a programmed function tied to that particular cell; such as the playing of a video. Other functions can include the playing of an image with a separate sound file, a lone image, a lone sound, a combination image first then video, as well as other possible functions. The user could leave the current content or interrupt playback by activating any other cell

combined with the StarLeaf product portfolio, to offer organizations all the benefits of an easy-to-use and easy-to-deploy collaboration solution. Video has always been expensive to deploy and hard to use. It really does raise the bar for everybody else.

Q: This InfoComm you are launching myMix Control, a remote control for your personal monitor mixing system. Isn’t that a contradiction to some degree?

responded with myMix Control, which allows engineers wired or wireless remote control of the entire myMix system from wherever he/she logs in. myMix Control uses a web browserbased interface to log onto a myMix system through an Ethernet connection or wireless device and allows configuration, lock-out and editing of all parameters within a myMix set up. Engineers could already listen to the individual mixes—now they can log on, check and tweak the mix if one of their performers or musicians needs support.

A: Not at all. We heard from bigger installations that they needed the ability to control entire systems from one access point. Engineers from production companies and theaters were asking for a solution to configure and back up complete system settings. (We have some performing facilities with more than 70 units.) We

We are at the point where we can say myMix has evolved into a highly regarded professional audio tool. Everything it does serves a purpose and adds value to the musical experience. thereby jumping over to different content immediately. Content files are usually JPEGs and MOVs. Since they are simple to create in some basic authoring software, it gives the system owner control over their content. To replace it, only a basic understanding of how to rename files in Windows; ‘drag and drop;’ overwrite files and other basic file management skills are needed.

“Our complete line of [i]connect products, the KIOSK being our most popular, answers a growing demand for all-in-one interactive displays,” says John Moyik, President of DC Connect. “With [i]connect, [i]cell technology is available in accessible configurations while still featuring the same robust, no-touch and intuitive use characteristics that have made [i]cells in our custom installs one of the best choices for interactive experiences. KIOSKs and DISPLAYs have been deployed for Southern California Edison, 99s Museum of Women Pilots, Comcast NBCUniversal, Carmel and Rancho Cucamonga Public Libraries.”

Applications DC Connect offers a variety of products in their [i]connect line in addition to custom configurations. Two of these are the [i]connect KIOSK and [i]connect DISPLAY. Finally, both task and video lighting needs can be combined into a single light fixture with a slender, architectural look—simultaneously retro with its fin-like louvers that direct its light, and modern with its linear, unobtrusive profile. Always the best on-air look, and now, the best in-room look, brightline continues to offer new solutions to old problems—providing innovative, goodlooking lighting systems that keep you looking good. The new Micro-T is also visible in Booth #N1825. Offering the same unique recess and rotation features of the standard T-Series, the Micro-T brings big things to small spaces. And just like standard T-Series, Micro-Ts are available with motor options so that motion and dimming

changes are combined in a single button push. Simple-to-use Apps for smart devices create fun and efficient operating systems; push an icon on your iPhone and move a light’s position to an ideal video focused preset, then back to a flush position in the ceiling, restoring the room for general meeting use. If your AV environment has an AV processor, simply connect your Brightline system to it, whether it’s AMX, Crestron, Extron, or Savant, a simple RS-232 interface translates signal seamlessly, allowing your AV controller to adjust light levels, move light positions and recall preset cues that change both level and position. As Cercone discusses Brightline’s other new product, the BL.16, a twinkle of pride is evident. That the BL.16 stands apart in the veritable sea of

sameness surrounding escalating LED development is attributable to Cercone’s insightful and aggressive direction of brightline’s R & D toward the development of a smart, long-throw LED, featuring interchangeable optics and adjustable intensity control. Styled to match the established SeriesONE look, the BL.16 packs a focusable force of light into a small, stylish fixture, ideally suited to light auditorium stages and lecterns while meeting energysavings standards. At InfoComm 2012, visit Brightline at Booth #N1825 to see the VideoPlus, Micro-T, and BL.16—their first showing by Brightline, an Energy Star partner of the US Environmental Protection Agency. He did not want to use adhesive for fear of damaging the wall, and was also wary of impaling clips, which may damage the panel or fabric if not used correctly. “Aaron recommended the Z-clip

After a few missteps with my laser level, hanging the panels only took a few hours,” said Autor. Aside from looking great and being easy to install, the panels achieved enhanced sound quality for the room. “After putting the panels up, the
