Radial Introduces The Firefly Tube DI, Ideal For Houses Of Worship And Concert Halls

VANCOUVER, British Columbia — Radial Engineering Ltd. is pleased to announce the Firefly tube direct box, a fully discrete class-A unity gain amplifier ideally suited for diverse live performance applications. Radial company president Peter Janis explains, "This tube DI has been in our plans for some time now. We are pleased to bring the Firefly to the market. Its unique features and always reliable Radial build quality make this DI an essential in any audio engineer's or musician's tool kit." The Firefly begins with two inputs, each of which features a separate level control to enable the artist to set each instrument with optimal gain. Switching between inputs can be can be done using the front panel switch or via the optional JR2 remote footswitch. The instrument signal is immediately routed to a tuner output that is always on. When used with the JR2 footswitch, the Firefly may also be muted remotely for quiet on-stage tuning. Both the footswitch and front panel are equipped with LED indicators for status monitoring. Following the award winning Ra-

dial JDV, the Firefly's front end circuit is 100 percent discrete class-A and is void of any circuit stabilizing negative feedback. This produces a more open, less constricted sound. The Firefly is also equipped with Drag Control load correction that enables the artist to adjust the load on the magnetic pickup for a much more natural rendering. When bypassed, the load jumps to 4 megohms enabling the Firefly to be used with piezo pickups such as common with upright bass and other acoustic instruments. The exceptional warmth and detail is achieved by combining Radial's unique front end with an all new12AX7 tube drive circuit. Contrasting the input sensitivity with the output drive enables the artist to fine tune the grit or edge to give the sound more character. And to add even more fun, the Firefly comes shipped with two 12AX7 tubes, a select premium tube for audiophile performance and a lowfi version for added growl. As the Firefly will likely become a favorite with acoustic instruments, a fully variable high-pass filter has been added that enables the engineer to set

the bass cut-off frequency for optimal layering. This 'Nashville trick' lets you set the cut-off to better match the size of the instrument whereby a lower cutoff would be used on contrabass, slightly higher on acoustic and higher again on fiddle or mandolin. By setting a different cut-off for each instrument one can eliminate resonance while still retaining the character. The result is a better sounding mix. Connectivity is extensive: The rear panel begins with two stacked ¼ inch instrument inputs. A second set of stacked ¼ inch jacks presents the user with a buffered thru-put that delivers either the original instrument's tone or the output from the tube circuit. But digital market advanced faster than the technology of high performance nickel reflectors. The day has now come—our technology has caught up with the market. Other products offered by Optiforms are AR coatings for booth glass and other applications and heat filters for down-stream optics heat protection. They supply elliptical/spherical digital sets (including intermediate plates and integration adapters for using metal reflectors in frames that were originally

designed for glass) and engineering assistance for custom applications. They can also assist with the design of new systems in relation to the reflectors and collection of light. Other functions can include the playing of an image with a separate sound file, a lone image, a lone sound, a combination image first then video, as well as other possible functions. The user could leave the current content or interrupt playback by activating any other cell thereby jumping over to different content immediately. Content files are usually JPEGs and MOVs. Since they are simple to create in some basic authoring software, it gives the system owner control over their content. To replace it, only a basic understanding of how to rename files in Windows; ‘drag and drop;’ overwrite files and other basic file management skills are needed.

for AV products?

A: Starin is effectively a system component supplier support system. We think beyond the product itself. We know how our components suit applications and work. With a 360 degree view, we work to be a resource at every point of the integrator’s project lifecycle and for that matter the on-going service to their end client. This past year saw the reorganization of our sales support resources to not only provide the field rep engagement we’ve been known for at the integrator’s place of business. We added Channel Sales managers who offer specific application assistance, Technical Marketing Engineer with CTS-D level guidance for consultants & designers, along with Sales Administrators that

The new H6 provides transparent, natural sound pick-up with an extremely low profile capsule at just 2.5 millimeters in diameter—roughly the size of a No. 2 pencil lead. With its high dynamic range and flat 20 Hz to 20 kHz frequency response, the new H6 is perfect for a wide range of applications. As anyone who’s ever worn a headset microphone will attest, a secure, comfortable fit that isn’t distracting is crucial for performance and presentation. In this regard, the new H6 Headset Microphone

growth rate over the past couple years because it sets a new standard in personal monitor mixers. We listened to customer needs, helped establish a new market category and developed real-world solutions. As a result, myMix has become a leader. The praise for myMix is very consistent and confirms exactly what we wanted to achieve with this product: amazing sound, ease of use; versatility of using it as a stand-alone or integrating it into an existing system; its scalability of system size, the ability to record and play back in multi-track—myMix really does offer TOTAL CONTROL on so many different levels. Any musician, at any performing level, benefits from myMix.

a solution. Wireless AV is a major initiative for us, as we believe it is for the industry. Our partners have become AVOver-IT integrators and are into the Unified Communications convergence, as well as effective in room collaboration. Barco, known for high-end specialty product, selected us to develop the market for their first broad market solution, ClickShare. As wireless AV, it provides a much more productive means for clients to collaborate. It is ingenious in its simplicity and elegance. Wow Vision gets into wireless interactivity with an expanded set of features now and a new point of entry. Revolabs, Sony, CAD, Telex and AV Essentials (formerly Gentner ALS) round out our wireless audio offer. Did I mention our Booth number is C6023?

Q: What have been your company’s challenges?

A: In addition to our sales support resources, our Customer Service Reps react to the immediate needs as people inquire. They are trained professionals. At times the support our customers need has been overwhelming… a problem of growth. I am happy we have continued to adjust, to add to our Customer Service team. We expect our integrators will notice the increased Starin sense of urgency and attention to their needs. Otherwise, we share the same challenge of our partners; to prove how AV communications can meaningfully impact and improve an organization. With strong business cases, methods to technology adoption and being a significant part of the Learning Organization and Communications Ecosystem, we all will go from surviving to thriving. And you can guess we’re ready to talk about how we can do that together in Booth #C6023.

excels. The microphone employs a lightweight adjustable headframe that stays perfectly in place. Available in four colors—light beige, tan, cocoa and black— to match a wide range of skin tones, the H6 blends seamlessly and is virtually invisible when worn. When working under the hot lights of a theatrical or broadcast environment, perspiration can wreak havoc on the performance of miniature microphones. Not so with the H6. The H6 provides excellent moisture resistance: the entire headset can be placed underwater without being damaged. Further reinforcing this microphone’s first-rate water resistant performance is the fact that the microphone’s cable detaches at the headset and employs a new double-sealed watertight connector. The H6 Headset Microphone’s cable

carries additional benefits—key among them is its strength. The slim, 1.2 millimeter cable offers a break strength exceeding 44 pounds, (20 kilograms)—an attribute that is certain to be appreciated by theatrical performers who frequently change costumes and frequently ‘pull’ the cable up from underneath wardrobe. This interchangeable cable is also the interface to a myriad of wireless microphone systems. Switching among different wireless transmitter packs is as easy as swapping a cable. The new H6 and its various cables interface to nearly all wireless transmitters, digital recorders or XLR mic inputs with phantom power. Chris Countryman, President of Countryman Associates, commented on the company’s new H6 Headset Microphone, “The new H6 delivers exceptional audio quality,

rugged build quality, superior fit for comfortable, distraction-free performance and the ability to interface with a wide range of wireless equipment. It’s available in both omni and directional versions, with the directional version providing a tight polar pattern for excellent isolation from ambient noise and feedback. With superior moisture resistance and its ability to be all but invisible when worn, I’m confident this microphone will find many a home with broadcasters, theatrical groups, houses of worship, theme parks and more.” The new Countryman H6 Headset Microphone carries a MSRP of $670 (Omni version) and $720 (Directional version). proactively keep integrators informed. It is not unusual that we are having dozens of GoToMeeting web trainings or just quick huddles every week helping integrators on specific interests. We have found people do not want information, until they need it and we’ve geared our resources to do that. The bottom line is we know our valued integrators have a multitude of choices… from buying direct from a manufacturer to AV and now IT distributors. We want to provide a value. Things like being the first distributor to have the new AV IQ from InfoComm integrated into our platform will help us all get smarter and faster. It’s being introduced in our Booth #C6023. Q: Please tell us about the key product or program initiatives.

The audio quality of myMix simply amazes people every time they try it. To our knowledge, we are the only company that offers integrated stereo effects for a three-dimensional sound image. When you listen through in-ear monitors, you need effects: tone control and panning in order to get the sound right. There is simply no listening fatigue with myMix. You cannot achieve this kind of sound by controlling an aux send from the console through a wireless app. The success of myMix is in the details, and we paid very close attention to the details, which is why music schools, HOW, live bands and performing arts facilities are choosing myMix. It really does raise the bar for older vintage gear. Power is supplied via an exterior switching supply for 100V to 240V operation and delivers a variable output that ranges from a typical unity gain DI level to a full +4dB line level for direct recording. As with all Radial products, the Firefly is road ready with 14 gauge

Q: This InfoComm you are launching myMix Control, a remote control for your personal monitor mixing system. Isn’t that a contradiction to some degree?

A: Not at all. We heard from bigger installations that they needed the ability to control entire systems from one access point. Engineers from production companies and theaters were asking for a solution to configure and back up complete system settings. (We have some performing facilities with more than 70 units.) We responded with myMix Control, which allows engineers wired or wireless remote control of the entire myMix system from wherever steel construction plus a protective zone around the controls and switches. This is augmented with steel cased switches and potentiometers plus a double sided military grade PCB for added life. The Firefly comes with a carry handle that may be removed should rack mounting be needed for

We are at the point where we can say myMix has evolved into a highly regarded professional audio tool. Everything it does serves a purpose and adds value to the musical experience.
