There Is No Monopoly In Saving Energy

Article submitted courtesy of KOJIN

The race to find clean, renewable and sustainable energy is at a fever pitch. Billions of dollars are spent on advancing wind, water, solar, fossil, coal, nuclear energy sources—you name it, and there is an online chatter defending or opposing it. In and of itself, the course of arguments between passionate defenders is commendable: we are making progress on many fronts towards a better future. Those of us in the lighting industry, in turn, immerse ourselves in research and developing products to use less en-

ergy; and escalate our own arguments about which technology; SSL, inductance, fluorescent, etc., will outlast all others. No doubt, lighting technology is advancing at an ever-increasing pace, due, in no small measure, to the competitive nature of this business. Is there a clear winner in this race? In our view, no matter the source of energy, or the lighting technology, the

consumer is primarily interested in saving as much energy, and therefore cost, as possible. After all, a watt is a watt, and utility companies charge by the watt. Oh and by the way, the consumer also wants the product to look good. In a nutshell, the consumer wants options. At KOJIN, we are committed to the fundamental principle of “keeping it simple”. In early 2005, we looked at the simple fluorescent tube—the most widely used lighting technology outside of residential applications. The tube radiates light 360° around the tube. The obvious first response was a mostly non-technical one— apply a reflector around the tube to re-direct the “wasted” light down to the task level. Using Nano technology, we manufactured tube reflectors, with continued on page 45

New FX Luminaire PO LED Wall Light Combines Flexibility And Beauty

FX Luminaire is best known for developing some of the most elegant, efficient, and technologically advanced LED fixtures in the industry. The most recent FX product release, the PO wall light, is a shining example of that reputation in action. The PO is one of the most versatile wall fixtures on the market because of the way it blends LED efficiency, durable materials, and specification flexibility. It was built to accommodate the lighting designer’s need for exterior styling as well as light function. The PO has four faceplate options. Two are flood lights, one is a wall wash, and the other is a spot light style. They are all much smaller in diameter than their incandescent predecessors, which allow the landscaper to use a core drill to install. Using a core drill is much less obtrusive to the structure the fixture is being installed in, which removes the worry about putting a large hole in a stairway or wall. The core benefit for landscapers with this flexibility is that they will be able to adjust not only the type of light output, but also the look. If a more traditional or modern look is desired, the

PO can make it happen. All fixtures include 12" of PVC, a 1 LED module, three color filters and 10’ of cable. All fixtures are also available in a choice of powdercoat, bare brass, antique or nickel plated finishes. The PO is available now, and will be on display in the FX Luminaire booth, 6141, at Lightfair International.

Visible Light Communication – Broadband Communication From The LED Ceiling Light

At LIGHTFAIR® 2012, the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute presents a novel form of broadband transmission technology—Visible Light Communication (VLC). In VLC, broadband data streams travel via visible light emitted by standard off-the-shelf LED lamps to a computer or other communication-enabled end device. The current broadband capacity of VLC is 100 Mbit/s, while speeds of up to 800 Mbit/s have been demonstrated in laboratory conditions. This transmission technology, which draws on the energy-efficient electronics of LEDs, is equally suitable for the dissemination of broadband video streams and bidirectional communication such as video conferencing if infrared LEDs are used for the back channel. This technology can be applied anywhere LED technology is used for illumination, making it equally at home in hospitals and manufacturing processes. The use of visible light brings an additional advantage: the light cone from the lamp clearly marks the radius of data distribution and accessibility. The fundamentals of VLC were developed by

Fraunhofer HHI in association with industry partners Siemens and France Telecom Orange Labs through the EU's OMEGA project. Visible Light Communication can be seen as a complement for radio in wireless access, and is attractive for shortrange, high speed links in areas where radio is not desired or feasible. Possible uses include optical WLANs or pointand-shoot links in various environments. VLC benefits from various favorable factors, including: • Omnipresence of LEDs in displays, signaling and illumination • Significant potential for high-speed modulation by using LEDs as continued on page 20

Introducing The LED HI-Lamp From Differential Energy Global, Ltd.

Only a few times each generation is humanity treated with a disruptive innovation—one that can truly change the landscape and provide the type of multiindustry advancement across unlimited sectors. We are at the threshold of a radical worldwide change in the lighting of just about every type of architectural surface. Not since Thomas Edison invented the incandescent bulb has a light-providing device so enthralled a global audience—even global governments and industry leaders. In the last decade the LED chip has quickly trans-

formed the light bulb as we know it today to a phenomenon quickly leading to a vast paradigm shift away from traditional light sources. When such technology is unveiled it is often met with skepticism, early offerings are of poor quality, little to no regulations exist and we view the landscape as somewhat of a Wild, Wild, West cadre of companies and individuals trying to get in on the action. While the technology itself dates back to 1907 (Henry Joseph Round), only in recent years has the technology, cost and ac-

ceptance finally reached the tipping point. Early in 2011, Cree, Inc. introduced a 10w, 1,000 lumen LED chip that is quickly transforming the outdoor commercial, industrial, warehouse and

municipal lighting sector away from traditional HID light fixtures to those driven by low-wattage LED lamps. Leader International Corporation, a 31-year venerable manufacturer of outdoor site and street furniture and LED accent lights, collaborated with its affiliate Differential Energy Global Ltd. (DEG) to bring several transformational innovations in LED lighting through the creative, design, prototype and testing phases. Releasing at LIGHTFAIR® and throughout 2012, DEG will offer an array of LED lamps with equivalent lumen output (displayed in lux or footcandles) ready to replace all levels of HID bulbs ranging from 70w to 400w initially and followed by outputs for hibay fixtures up to a 700w equivalent. continued on page 42

Vu1 Corporation is setting a new global standard for safe, sustainable, energy-efficient lighting. Utilizing a technology—Electron Stimulated Luminescence™ (ESL) that has its genesis in the TVtube technology of past generations—Vu1’s signature R30 bulb accomplishes what lighting

innovators have tried for centuries to do— generate a lighting output that approaches the ideal of lighting reflectivity defined by scientist Johann Lambert. The Vu1 R30 succeeds by creating a warm, pleasing light that has a full spectrum of colors and reflects evenly on the surface

below. The R30 generates a 65-watt equivalency and 500 lux with just 19.5 watts, is fully dimmable, and contains no mercury or other harmful components. So, what is this ESL technology and how does it work? Well, as mentioned earlier, it functions similar to your old tube televisions—it uses accelerated electrons to stimulate phosphor to create light, making the surface of the bulb “glow”. This efficient technology allows the ESL bulb to project the same light quality as an incandescent but is up to 70 percent more energy efficient, lasting up to five times longer than incandescent and contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Perhaps most importantly, there is no use of the neurotoxin Mer-

debuting our 5" aperture Eco-Downlight LED at LIGHTFAIR. Design and building professionals appreciate that these lights are modular, uncomplicated in design and a great value. An example of “modular” is that the Eco-Downlights come with interchangeable optics and a variety of trim options. In one recent project pursuing LEED certification, the builder chose the 2" aperture and 3" aperture Eco-Downlights because he was able to set the light direction at varying degrees depending on the ceiling height. The project had heavily sloped roofs, so our modularity was a real advantage.

Eco-Downlight collection is a great example of our innovation, simplicity, design and function. We are proud to debut the second generations of our LED “Mini” and 3" aperture Eco-Downlight this year, which offer more power and higher energy-efficiency than their predecessors. The new 5" aperture EcoDownlight also reflects our ability to create downlighting solutions for all types of buildings, both large and small. A: The market is looking for increased performance on every level. We are beginning to see LEDs with higher junction point temperatures. These LEDs can get up to 150 degrees Celsius, which is extremely hot. For architects and designers, a higher temperature means they will be able to increase the light impact, ultimately decreasing the amount of LEDs needed to light a space. Three years ago when we began using LEDs, we were getting 25-30 lumens per watt. With the advancement of junction temperature, we are now seeing up to 100 lumens per watt. Advancements in color consistency will continue, as will dimmable solutions. At CSL, we are value engineering all of our current LED Eco-Downlights, in order to reduce market costs while keeping the same light output. We've also been working diligently to create a better selection of decorative, high performance LED fixtures. Needless to say, there’s plenty of work to do and the future looks bright for CSL. an LED solution for bright accent lighting of 250 lumens per foot. This allows the designer to create striking visual images of seamless illumination with various color temperatures, all flush with the drywall mounting surface. When ordered with an overlap lens, this fixture functions beautifully as a vanity light installed between panels of mirror. The DLED-9000 series fixture is available from 18 inches to 12 feet, with a one piece housing and integral dimmable Hi-lume driver. Continuous illumination of 40 feet or longer can be created by joining housings together. In addition to straight runs, the DLED-

9000 series is available with 90˚ intersections so that the fixtures can run up a wall and across a ceiling. This can create designs called a Vertical “L” or Inverted “U”. Flat plane rectangles are also available. New for 2012 is their angled LED Wash Illuminator. By placing the high brightness LED board on a 40˚ angle heat sink, it positions the light source for maximum effectiveness to project the light out of a cove or soffit for ceiling wash applications. The LED board provides a 900 lumen per foot light source that is dimmable. (Remote drivers are required.) Custom modifications are available

Recently, the company decided to replace the roof on its leaky warehouse that housed the necessities for creating the company’s Polish specialty. When the roof and skylights began to leak, Ateeco president Tom Twardzik knew that a long-term solution was necessary. Twardzik realized the environmental and economical benefits of daylighting and began to search for high-performance, watertight alternatives to traditional skylights. With many of today’s LED modules having light outputs exceeding 3000 lumens, dimming down to only 10 percent (300 lumens) is not acceptable in many high-end applications. Even the dimming response can be tailored to suit specific external control devices with either a linear or logarithmic dimming curve supported.

Friday, May 11, 2012 burg, Pennsylvania, Ateeco chose a 20year EPDM roofing system manufactured by Carlisle SynTec Systems, along with Carlisle’s DryLight™ daylighting system to replace the building’s existing skylights. Carlisle’s DryLight skylights are manufactured utilizing RIM (Reaction Injection Molding) technology, originally introduced to the automotive industry. The RIM technology is used in the production of DryLight to encapsulate the glazing into a pigmented, UVstabilized, polyurethane retainer frame. This technology eliminates the need for tapes, gaskets and sealants between the frame and dome, and helps reduce the potential for leaks associated with traditional skylights.

Construction on the facility began with a tear-off of the building’s existing roof and installation of a two-inch layer of Carlisle HP-H polyiso insulation. Berger’s crew left a separation between the skylight opening and the polyiso to allow for the installation of wood blocking, which was used to anchor the DryLight skylights onto the rooftop. Next, Berger’s crew installed Carlisle’s 60-mil Sure-Seal ® EPDM single-ply membrane onto the entire roof surface and cut 4-foot by 4-foot holes to prepare for the DryLight installation. Roofers secured the skylight flange to the wood blocking using galvanized metal fasteners. Carlisle’s Pressure-Sensitive EPDM curb flashing was cut to fit

the outside of the curb and applied after being primed with Carlisle’s HP-250 Primer. Laborsaving corner details were applied right before the Berger roofing crew began to install the DryLight skylight domes. In matter of days, the Ateeco employees were working in much-improved conditions underneath a leak-free, environmentally friendly rooftop. With a 20-year total system warranty, Carlisle provided Ateeco with the security of the only total system warranty in the industry, giving Twardzik peace of mind far beyond what any other system could provide. nology is only part of the story. What is the value of a 100,000 rated fixture if the LED modules could be obsolete in five years? LuxEvo fixtures have upgradeable circuit boards that will allow for future upgrades while preserving the fixture housing and the cooling capability of the Heat Spreader. We provide a long-term economic lighting solution that keeps pace with technology advancements. So with LuxEvo there is no need to wait on LED. The claim has been made that LED’s

And that is just the beginning. Here is what is coming… • LED Tubes with a 210˚ Beam Angle: Finally an LED Tube that will perform like a fluorescent! • Liquid Lenses: Increase light output by more than 15 percent over conventional lenses while reducing glare • 300-600 Watt Fixtures: The answer for high mast and high illumination area lighting. • 90+ CRI: Color rendering close to daylight for a wide range of LED fixtures.

Special electrical wiring, network infrastructure wiring, computer servers, or mounting hardware is not required to install, operate, or control the fixtures. Each fixture is independently controllable wirelessly and can be turned on, turned off, or dimmed to any level from 100 percent down to one percent, instantly or gradually, and at any time, either individually by fixture or in fixture groups. What’s more, integrated wireless daylight sensors and occupancy sensors can be used to maintain constant illumination at working or shopping areas on the floor while turning fixtures off when no people or

equipment are present in the illuminated area or aisle. The Cool Lumens light fixtures automatically adjust to stable or varying input line voltages from 100VAC to 300VAC to deliver constant light output even when connected to dirtypower grids. Each LED lamp module in the fixture is passively cooled through a patent-pending design that efficiently dissipates the heat generated by the high-output LED array in each lamp, maintaining the LEDs at optimal operating temperature for extended life without any fans or other cooling devices.

Cool HighBay luminaires are available now. Cool Lumens urges you to evaluate them in your own facility against your existing or competitive lighting solutions. And if you have a CAD file that shows your facility layout with your current lighting deployment and requirements, the Cool Lumens team would be happy to configure a custom Cool Lumens lighting solution for you. Visit Cool Lumens at Booths #5617 and #5717 and their team can do a layout of your building on the spot. For more information about Cool Lumens, Inc., call 831-454-8497 or email info@coollumens.com.

lution, mainly because they could not sufficiently dissipate heat in typical plug-insocket configurations. Even with advances in LED technology, the heat issue could not be overcome. Instead, CAST Lighting began a process of re-designing their luminaries and developing LED modules (with adequate thermal pathways). After 3 years of intensive R & D, CAST Lighting released its unique line of LED landscape lights. Their criteria for performance went far beyond heat management, and included solutions for a host of LED performance issues. These include:

and changed by the installer. •Extended Voltage Range. All CAST LED’s have the widest input voltage range in the industry. 9.6 to 28.8 volts for the LED Bullet (CBLED141) Tree Light (CTLED141); and 8 to 18 volts for all other LED luminaires. •Spike and Surge Protection. CAST Lighting LED drivers have components that protect against prolonged surges and occasional spikes. •EMI Filtering. All LED drivers generate EMI; occasions of interference with household control devices are common. CAST Lighting drivers have EMI filters for conformance with FCC standards. •Replaceable Modules and Boards. All CAST Lighting LED modules and boards can be field-replaced.

Next we set course on converting the less efficient T12 and T8 lights to the more efficient T5 lamps. To address the concern that the sheer slimness of the T5 lamp renders it incompatible with the T12/T8 tombstones, we commissioned G13 adaptors to fit over the smaller G5 socket on T5 tubes. The bigger obstacle was resolving the retrofit process without adding significant labor. The solution was to manufacture a T5 self-ballasted kit;

consisting of a lamp holder, which also acts to contain the T5 ballast, the G13 adaptors and the T5 lamp. The result is an average of 30 percent energy savings. Thereafter, our development opened up a wide spectrum of product offerings, centering around the T5 technology; such as troffers, shop lights, strip lights, etc. Not discounting the LED advances, we now also have a division focused on bringing the same cost-effective produc-

tion to LED products—recognizing that each product class has pros and cons. Seven years on, what we know for sure is that energy savings is a collective responsibility, and no technology has a monopoly on this global mission. The clear winner? The consumer, of course!
