CAST Lighting Landscape And Security Lighting

CAST Lighting manufactures premium-quality landscape and security lighting. Their outdoor incandescent and LED low-voltage luminaires are unique in the industry. Using the age-old method of sand-casting (mostly solid bronze), CAST Lighting produces luminaires in their own South American foundry. CAST Lighting’s mission is to provide robust and flexible lighting tools (designed for the professional) that are energy-efficient, reliable, simple to install and easy to service.

LED Perimeter Lighting System CAST Lighting’s most recent release is the CAST LED Perimeter Lighting System composed of compact and durable LED luminaires mounted on chain link fence posts with a remote 24volt power supply. This system addresses a need that others do not—an inexpensive, energy-efficient way to enhance visual security for extensive or remote property boundaries. Solid Bronze Landscape Lighting Systems

CAST Lighting is best known for its extremely durable, corrosion-resistant, landscape lighting luminaries. Their most popular luminaire is the CAST Bullet (CBL1CB), a solid bronze directional light often used in extremely aggressive Oceanside applications. With no coatings to crack or peel, these luminaires age naturally to a blue-green patina and actually improve in appearance over time. The LED version of this Bullet (CBLED141) utilizes an award-winning LED module. This module was recognized by the IESNA in 2011 as a significant advancement in the lighting industry. They stated, “This is the first LED module designed to be used in an enclosed luminaire.” continued on page 6

Vu1 Introduces ‘Lighting Without Compromise’ To Eager Lighting Consumers

Vu1 Corporation is setting a new global standard for safe, sustainable, energyefficient lighting. Utilizing a technology—Electron Stimulated Luminescence™ (ESL) that has its genesis in the TV-tube technology of past generations—Vu1’s signature R30 bulb accomplishes what lighting innovators have tried for centuries to do—generate a lighting output that approaches the ideal of lighting reflectivity defined by scientist Johann Lambert. The Vu1 R30 succeeds by creating a warm, pleasing light that has a full spectrum of colors and reflects evenly on the surface below. The R30 generates a 65-watt equivalency and 500 lux with just 19.5 watts, is fully dimmable, and

contains no mercury or other harmful components. So, what is this ESL technology and how does it work? Well, as mentioned earlier, it functions similar to your old tube televisions—it uses accelerated electrons to stimulate phosphor to create light, making the surface of the bulb “glow”. This efficient technology allows the ESL bulb to project the same light quality as an incandescent but is up to 70 percent more energy efficient, lasting up to five times longer than incandescent and contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Perhaps most importantly, there is no use of the neurotoxin Mercury (Hg) in the lighting process.

In 2004, a group of engineers, scientists and executives sensed the beginning of a cataclysmic shift in the way consumers obtained lighting, and explored various options of how to compete in this changing lighting landscape. By combining technologies that had never been used before in lighting, they created the Electron Stimulated Luminescence model—a highly energy efficient, near perfect light quality, mercury-free lighting technology. After more than a half-decade of testing and refining, the Vu1 R30 ESL received UL certification in October 2010. With this certification, Vu1 was able to begin to put the pieces in place to move toward full-scale production of the R30 bulb—a process that will result in massdistribution of the bulb in the U.S. during

the summer of 2012. The R30 is just the first in a variety of bulbs that Vu1 will be able to produce with its ESL technology. Plans are in place to introduce the classic A-type lamp for U.S. and European consumers, the R40 for the U.S. commercial market and the R25 in Europe. Vu1’s mission is to help consumers and businesses meet their demands for more environmentally-friendly lighting choices that meet standards now being set through the ban of incandescent light bulbs. By introducing the only bulb that can deliver affordability, energy-efficiency and dimmability in a non-toxic package, Vu1 is the only choice is truly a “light without compromiseTM”. CAST LIGHTING

(continued from page 4)

LED Research and Development When bright-light LED’s first entered the market (about 4 years ago), product developers at CAST Lighting started investigating the potential for LED’s in the outdoor environment. It became obvious that LED retrofit lamps were a poor solution, mainly because they could not sufficiently dissipate heat in typical plug-in-socket configurations. Even with advances in LED technology, the heat issue could not be overcome. Instead, CAST Lighting began a process of re-designing their luminaries and developing LED modules (with adequate thermal pathways). After 3 years of intensive R & D, CAST Lighting released its unique line of LED landscape lights. Their criteria for performance went far beyond heat management, and included solutions for a host of LED performance issues. These include: •Switchable Brightness. The CAST LED

Bullet (CBLED141) and Tree Light (CTLED141) have a high/low brightness switch. •Changeable optics. These same two luminaires have optics that can be removed and changed by the installer. •Extended Voltage Range. All CAST LED’s have the widest input voltage range in the industry. 9.6 to 28.8 volts for the LED Bullet (CBLED141) Tree Light (CTLED141); and 8 to 18 volts for all other LED luminaires. •Spike and Surge Protection. CAST Lighting LED drivers have components that protect against prolonged surges and occasional spikes. •EMI Filtering. All LED drivers generate EMI; occasions of interference with household control devices are common. CAST Lighting drivers have EMI filters for conformance with FCC standards. •Replaceable Modules and Boards. All CAST Lighting LED modules and boards can be field-replaced. There Is No Monopoly In Saving Energy

Article submitted courtesy of KOJIN

The race to find clean, renewable and sustainable energy is at a fever pitch. Billions of dollars are spent on advancing wind, water, solar, fossil, coal, nuclear energy sources—you name it, and there is an online chatter defending or opposing it. In and of itself, the course of arguments between passionate defenders is commendable: we are making progress on many fronts towards a better future. Those of us in the lighting industry, in turn, immerse ourselves in research and developing products to use less energy; and escalate our own arguments about which technology; SSL, inductance, fluorescent, etc., will outlast all others. No doubt, lighting technology is advancing at an ever-increasing pace, due, in no small measure, to the competitive nature of this business. Is there a clear winner in this race? In our view, no matter the source of energy, or the lighting technology, the consumer is primarily interested in saving as much energy, and therefore cost, as possible. After all, a watt is a watt, and utility companies charge by the watt. Oh and by the way, the consumer also wants

the product to look good. In a nutshell, the consumer wants options. At KOJIN, we are committed to the fundamental principle of “keeping it simple”. In early 2005, we looked at the simple fluorescent tube—the most widely used lighting technology outside of residential applications. The tube radiates light 360° around the tube. The obvious first response was a mostly nontechnical one— apply a reflector around the tube to re-direct the “wasted” light down to the task level. Using Nano technology, we manufactured tube reflectors, with curvatures engineered to maximize light reflection for each fluorescent lamp size. The patented Nano reflector increases the footcandle by 65 percent! If you are mathematically inclined, you’d figure out that you can de-lamp one out of every two T8 lamps, and get the same or better lighting. That is 50 percent energy savings. continued on page 45

audience—even global governments and industry leaders. In the last decade the LED chip has quickly transformed the light bulb as we know it today to a phenomenon quickly leading to a vast paradigm shift away from traditional light sources. When such technology is unveiled it is often met with skepticism, early offerings are of poor quality, little to no regulations exist and we view the landscape as somewhat of a Wild, Wild, West cadre of companies and individuals trying to get in on the action. While the technology itself dates back to 1907 (Henry Joseph Round), only in recent years has the technology, cost and acceptance finally reached the tipping point. Early in 2011,

of the benefits of an incredible LED without any side effects,” Wilcox said. Seoul Semiconductor commercialized the first ever “AC-LED” in the world back in 2005. Shortly thereafter, a new product line branded ‘Acriche’ was launched for the general lighting market. The company has continued to invest heavily in AC-driven LED technology and is now focused on the Acrich2 family of modules that are helping lighting companies eliminate the AC/DC drivers and reduce space significantly in bulb and fixture designs. A large variety of voltage and power ranges are available to meet a wide variety of needs. Three years ago, Seoul Semiconductor was unheard of in North America. Now, under Wilcox’s leadership, there is a distinct buzz around Seoul N.A. In just a few years, Wilcox restructured and reorganized the sales team, which has since doubled in size. He has also added marketing, distribution, and technical support divisions, as well as two North American labs where Seoul N.A. can perform its own

effect means function. Inspired by native elements and other minerals and metals, and influenced and motivated by current sentiments to love the planet as well as the shift in consciousness attributed to the end of the Mayan calendar and all current theories considering life on Earth, as we know it, the result of alien conspiracies with our ancestors over thousands of years ago, the ‘Natives and Aliens’ color selection draws attention to the worth of minerals and metals, and gravitates around the homecoming to nature to confer gratitude to Mother Earth for its kindness and magnificence. The ‘Natives and Aliens’ color selection hybridizes the ethereal with extraterrestrial shape shifting finishes creating an intriguing yet glamorous appearance. Copper, gold and nickel contrast with bronze, brass and chrome. Flat matte converges with high gloss. Dark shades expose light and transpar-

ent colors. The ‘Natives and Aliens’ color selection reveals earthy tones with a scent from the past and a 21st century twist. It interlinks the muted with the sparkling and juxtaposes the shimmery with the dimmed. The ‘Natives and Aliens’ color selection is offered in an exterior non-architectural powder coating grade suitable for exterior and interior applications. The muted, dimmed, shiny, shimmering, polished and brushed metallic and pearlescent second generation bonded metallic and special effects are a designer’s finale moment and an evolution in the color and finishes space. The selection is well suited to a variety of market segments including lighting, furniture, railing, store fixtures and other applications where the visual and the form are an integrated part of the designer’s creation. for the commercial indoor market. We have initially focused on the linear replacement lamp market, which many view as the “holy grail” of LED lighting. With the U.S. ban of the T-12 fluorescent lamp happening on July 14 of this year, we see a tremendous near-term opportunity for LED technology to establish a foothold in this very large market. There are over 500 million T-12s still in the U.S. We want to be a big part of that conversion story. Q: How did you get started?

A: NEXT Lighting’s co-founder Zach Berkowitz, who comes from the commercial real estate world and has been a friend since college, came to me with a problem. He had been experimenting with some of the “me-too” replacement lamps and found them technically deficient. Many of them were failing after just a few months, and some of them were getting so hot that solder was actually melting. So we began to investigate if we could come up with a better design than what everyone else was doing. We teamed up with some very smart engineers, and we’ve been refining our de-

able message delivery and do not require a network coordinator, which can be a single point of failure. All wireless devices communicate on the robust and reliable 900MHz ISM band. In comparison to wireless networks that use 2.4GHz devices, 900MHz devices have a longer signal range and are least affected by propagation losses and physical obstructions. All messages within the wiHUBB network are secure. When transmitting over the air, the system uses 128-bit Advanced Encryption Standard (AES128) security—the same encryption technology utilized by the US government to secure data transmissions. The wiHUBB system also uses the secure HTTPS/SSL protocol when users access the wiHUBB network using their Internet browser. The wiHUBB Smart Packs pro-

vide On/Off, High/Low and 0-10VDC full range dimming control for all lighting loads. The Smart Packs also feature wiHUBB SmartPORTs for plug and play support of wiHUBB occupancy sensors, daylight sensors and manual control switch stations. When devices are plugged into the SmartPORTs, the Smart Pack automatically and intelligently responds to the plugged in devices to provide the most energy efficient operation. The wiHUBB system also includes fixture modules suitable for both indoor and outdoor fixtures. Similar to the Smart Pack, the In-Fixture Modules provide On/Off, High/Low and 010VDC full range dimming control for all lighting loads—including LED drivers. The wiHUBB On-Fixture Module is the perfect solution for adding wireless On/Off and daylight

harvesting control to outdoor fixtures that have a standard twist lock photo-sensor receptacle. Access the wiHUBB system from anywhere at any time with the wiHUBB Access Point—a user friendly web-based device used for commissioning, managing and monitoring the wiHUBB devices. Now your iPad, smart phone or any device with a standard Internet browser can be lighting control central—no special client side PC software required. The intuitive and easy to use Graphical User Interface (GUI) also provides users the ability to schedule and control individual wiHUBB devices or groups of devices. sign for almost 3 years now. I must admit that when we started, we were very naïve on just how hard a problem this was to solve. The fluorescent tube is very efficient, and after 80 years of cost-reduction, very inexpensive. On the other hand, nobody ever said, “I love how pale you look under this fluorescent light. And can you give me some more of that flicker?” And then there’s the mercury issue.

rightly trained to be very skeptical. Fortunately, with the right independent testing reports, this problem can be overcome, but it will take some time and effort. Second, as with most LED product categories, linear replacement lamp sales are dependent upon being able to demonstrate to the customer an attractive return on their investment. While dropping quickly in price, LEDs are still relatively expensive, so producing a product that performs well at an affordable price point is an ongoing challenge for all of us in this industry. And finally, as a start-up in a world of industry giants, finding a successful go-to-market strategy is a tremendous challenge.

Q: Have you begun product shipments, and how much do your lamps cost?

Q: What is your technical breakthrough?

A: Our products are very different from the other linear lamp solutions out there. We have developed a thermal chimney design that keeps the LEDs very cool, increasing performance and longevity. Our design also uniquely enables us to shape the light distribution to suit the specific application. When people see our product, it is clear to them that we’ve been “thinking outside the tube.” Q: What are your company’s greatest challenges?

A: Where do I start? (Laughs.) First, our market has been tainted by a lot of poor quality products that have been sold with false claims. So the consumer has been

Q: How do you plan to address this distribution challenge?

A: We feel very fortunate to have been approached by several industry leaders and are considering our options. If we do partner with someone, we want to make sure it is an arrangement that takes full advantage of this global opportunity.

Q: Does that mean you will sell your products under another company’s brand? A: That is an option, but we don’t have anything to announce yet.

A: We have installed our products in customer sites under our PilotLight field assessment program. We are gathering important feedback, which has been universally positive. As far as cost goes, we have not yet announced final pricing, but our sales folks would be pleased to discuss specific opportunities.

Q: We have to ask, what’s next for NEXT? A: Beyond the linear replacement lamp market, we are currently working on a pendant lamp series that will provide excellent light distribution without the need for a fixture in the ceiling. We also have other linear formats as well as task lighting on our product roadmap. Q: How can our readers find out more?

A: They can stop by our Booth #6539 or visit us online at www.nextlighting.com. Q: Thank you for your time and best of luck with your launch at LIGHTFAIR®.

G13 adaptors to fit over the smaller G5 socket on T5 tubes. The bigger obstacle was resolving the retrofit process without adding significant labor. The solution was to manufacture a T5 self-ballasted kit; consisting of a lamp holder, which also acts to contain the T5 ballast, the G13 adaptors and the T5 lamp. The result is an average of 30 percent energy savings.

Thereafter, our development opened up a wide spectrum of product offerings, centering around the T5 technology; such as troffers, shop lights, strip lights, etc. Not discounting the LED advances, we now also have a division focused on bringing the same cost-effective production to LED products—recognizing that each product class has pros and cons.

Seven years on, what we know for sure is that energy savings is a collective responsibility, and no technology has a monopoly on this global mission. The clear winner? The consumer, of course!
