Are You at Risk for a Data Breach??

The View from ARIS: Looking Up!

CoActiv’s VNA and Mobile Technology Outpace the Competition

Are you absolutely positive about your vendor’s security procedures? Are they really in the X-ray destruction business or are they just a “recycler” that might be HIPAA/HITECH compliant and offer a certificate of destruction. In the event of a data breach, did you know that you have to inform all of your patients that their personal information may have been stolen? You will have to deal with large fines from HHS, bad press (ie: television and newspapers) and complete loss of trust from your

Hyperpolarized MRI Promises Imaging of Pulmonary Function in One Breath

A pioneer in hyperpolarized gas technology, Polarean, Inc. is opening new avenues for functional and physiological imaging with its hyperpolarized gas MRI technology. High-resolution, 3D images of inhaled noble gases using conventional MRI scanners illuminate tissue characteristics and organ function. Such detailed views are

(continued from page 1)

A: These are indeed exciting times at ARIS. We are in a growth mode with almost 20 new clients added just this year. We will soon be active in more than 20 states and now provide professional services to more than 80 clients.

Q: ARIS’s niche is in a crowded marketplace. What sets you apart?

A: ARIS begins and ends with quality. We are telling the story this week of two hospitals who left us for a lower priced competitor only to come back within 90 days for the ARIS quality difference. Everyone talks about quality; what really sets us apart is the execution. Our Med-

ical Director, Dr. Malay Mody, devised our quality program from the ground up. He has used it to recruit and develop the finest clinical staff and to provide positive quality feedback and metrics to our internal team as well as to our client base.

We provide each of our customers with a monthly quality report tracking turnaround times and documenting any variances. We randomly perform peer review on more than 2 percent of all our reads with the reviewer blinded to the initial reader. We track TAT by client. Nationwide YTD, ARIS’s STAT reads have averaged 17 minutes and 5 seconds! We have assembled the very best crew of U.S. based, fellowship trained radiologists in the industry. Many have subspecialty expertise in body, MSK, neurology,

and service hyperpolarizers and ancillary equipment for biomedical imaging research. They are now making gas hyperpolarization technology available to research labs across the United States and around the world. Polarean Chief Technology Officer and founder, Dr. Bastiaan Driehuys is one of the original inventors of hyperpolarized Breast MRI and PET/CT imaging.

Q: I understand that you recently moved into a new data center. What’s that all about?

A: ARIS is unique in that our majority owner is Summa Health, a $2 billion health system in northeast Ohio. That has always given us insight into our clients’ perspectives, as well as access to significant resources competitors don’t have. One of those assets has been use of the Summa Data Center. We have recently outgrown our roots, however, and just completed the move into a new Level III rated, Tier 1 ISP Data Center in Columbus, Ohio sitting on the backbone of the internet with 1 Gigabit bandwidth and 100 TB of storage. I’m not sure what all

Just as functional MRI changed the way we study the brain, hyperpolarized gas MRI enables studying the lung in ways that were never before possible. that means, but I do know it’s big and it’s fast!

Q: I have heard on the street that ARIS may be in an acquisition mode. Anything you want to tell us?

A: Now you know I can’t talk about things like that! I will tell you that we added a private equity partner last year in Great Point Partners out of Greenwich, Conn. They continue to advise us and help evaluate multiple opportunities for growth.

Q: It looks like my time is up, thank you for the insight into ARIS.

media.” Driehuys says the process is intrinsically faster than conventional MRI scans. “Subjects inhale a dose of hyperpolarized gas and hold that breath briefly. The resulting MRI scan reveals a detailed map of their lung function.” This technique holds great promise for monitoring patients’ response to treatment in a wide variety of pulmonary disorders, including asthma, interstitial lung disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and cystic fibrosis. Until recently, hyperpolarized gas MRI was available at just a handful of leading academic research centers around the world. Though the technology is not yet approved by regulatory authorities for routine clinical use, it is becoming recognized as a powerful clinical research tool to shed new light on lung function. Now that Polarean owns the rights to this technology, it is poised to expand availability to the biomedical imaging community. In addition to its potential for diagnosing and monitoring lung diseases, hyperpolarized gas MRI – when used in conjunction with xenon – is a viable imaging option for function of other organs, including heart and brain, and holds promise for non-medical applications. The polarizer transforms select inert gases, 3He and 129Xe, into a hyperpolarized state using circularly polarized laser

light. This process leaves the gases chemically unchanged, while their nuclei are magnetically aligned. The resulting MRI signal is enhanced by a factor of x100,000, which in turn makes direct imaging of gas atoms possible. All polarizers are fully documented, built to exact specifications and adhere to UL & IEC 61010 standards governing laboratory equipment and international safety requirements. With systems installed at more than 15 sites worldwide, Polarean has gained significant experience in installation, service, training, maintenance and adherence to regulatory standards. Polarean hyperpolarization systems are currently sold solely for research and investigational applications. You can contact Polarean, Inc. to learn how they can help you put a new spin on MRI research – www.polarean.com, 919-2067900 or visit Booth #1407.

“We have always felt that hyperpolarized gas MRI is an enormously powerful research platform. The potential applications are limited only by the imagination of the scientists who use it. We are thrilled to finally be able expand the access to the scientific community, and in doing so, we expect to see not only great progress in imaging lung disease, but novel applications in molecular imaging and other organs too.” - Dr. Bastiaan Driehuys, Polarean Chief Technology Officer & founder

leading healthcare software and IT systems provider offering a full line of PACS, digital image and data storage services and related solutions for hospitals, imaging facilities and medical practices. CoActiv’s EXAM-PACS family of Web-based PACS solutions provide leading edge, affordable and scalable image management with sophisticated tools. Products also include RIS and digital storage customized to users’ needs. Q: How is your VNA (vendor-neutral archive) different from others’?

A: CoActiv’s VNA solution is distinguished by its advanced technology backed by a wealth of experience and large user base, as well as a track record of zero-downtime and no loss of a single image ... ever.

CoActiv has offered a cloud-based VNA solution for more than a decade—before most companies even understood the term. CoActiv has always been committed to the open architecture that enables medical sites to control their own data. Today, we have one of the largest VNA implementations with millions of exams and billions of images stored. Our ultra-secure webbased VNA connects seamlessly to any PACS without the IT complexities of a VPN. Exams are stored in our unique QUAD-REDUNDANT ARCHIVING solution in four geographically distant locations, including two Tier-IV data centers for superior disaster protection. The system also provides immediate business continuity, restoring data access in emergency situations in seconds. Now, at RSNA 2012, CoActiv also intro-

features enhanced diagnostic image quality and will be used in conjunction with the Konica Minolta Image Pilot digital solution, which offers multiple methods to measure and control dose that optimizes exposure, a key consideration in healthcare today. “We are very pleased to play an important role in ensuring these athletes receive superior image quality during their preliminary examinations,” said Tom Boon, President of Summit Industries. “And we are very proud to have our Company be associated with Comerica Park, one of America’s premier ballparks.”

About Merry X-Ray/SourceOne Founded in 1958 by current owner and Chairman Leo Zuckerman, Merry X-Ray Chemical Corporation (Merry X-Ray) has kept pace with rapidly changing technology within the medical imaging field for over half a century. A: We believe exams should be readily available to radiologists and physicians, anytime and anywhere. That’s why our EXAM-PACS has supported an evergrowing number of mobile devices since 2009, when we were the first company to make exam viewing available on the popular Apple iPhone as well as Windows and Mac OS X mobile devices.

Since that time, CoActiv has supported viewing on a full range of smartphones and tablets. In addition to the iPhone and iPad, this ranges from Android phones to the T-Mobile Slate and Samsung Galaxy—and of course the customized CoActiv EXAM-PAD.

This year at RSNA, CoActiv introduces its zero-footprint Web-based EXAMBROWSER with real-time, multi-user collaboration and 3-D reconstruction on-the-fly. With the technology, multiple users can now review an image simultaneously, collaborate, and offer second opinions as needed--with no pre-planning.

The value proposition to a hospital or facility cannot be overlooked.

A: Our products have reached a level of portability no other company has been able to attain. It began with CereTom in 2006. This is a portable, small bore CT scanner capable of imaging the head and neck and diagnosing the kinds of injuries that took my brother. We’ve placed CereTom in the ICU, in the ER and the OR and in some of the most remote locations on Earth. Places like Haiti, where following the 2010 earthquakes, CereTom was the only functioning CT scanner on the island. We followed the success of CereTom with BodyTom, the portable full body, 32-slice scanner on the market. The first BodyTom installation took place in January of 2012; we expect great things to come. NeuroLogica’s products were designed with safety to the patient and staff in mind. We added radiation shielding, which reduces scatter and radiation exposure to staff. We have designed our
