Power Curbers Continues to Improve Their No. 1 Product, the 5700-C

The Power Curber 5700-C is the No. 1 selling curb and gutter machine in the world. Introduced in 2007, the 5700-C is the latest in the 5700 series which began in 1985. Originally designed for curb and gutter work, the 5700-C now performs in many applications including sidewalk, barrier wall, pathway paving up to 3.5 meters wide, and agricultural foundations. In spite of the variety of applications, the basic machine remains the same while only a mold or form changes from job to job.

Although traditionally viewed as a curb and gutter machine, recent infrastructure projects worldwide have created opportunities for the 5700-C to pour more barrier wall than ever. At 12-tons, the 5700-C now pours step barrier, variable barrier, U-shaped ditches, and experienced contractors can now pour barrier wall up to 1.5 meters high. Throughout its development the 5700 series has added many new features and improvements. In 1994, the auger conveyor was added to the machine, replacing the high maintenance belt conveyor sys-

Bosch Commits $340,000 to Help Superstorm Sandy Relief Efforts

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich.,—The devastation from Superstorm Sandy has had a significant impact on much of the East Coast, leaving thousands of individuals with substantial damage to home and property. After hearing of the tremendous losses faced by many affected communities, Bosch has committed $340,000 in funding and in-kind donations to help the

your background.

A: I have been in the decorative concrete industry since 1989. This is the 24th year I have been at World of Concrete which for the first time is more than half my life. I have been always been involved with great companies in the industry and have overseen the formulation, marketing and field testing of some amazing new product lines. Q: You are with iCOAT Products now, what makes them stand out?

A: iCOAT represented a unique opportunity for me. I had the chance to completely rethink not only a product line

victims of this natural disaster. “The devastation made us all realize just how fortunate we are that everyone on our team was reported safe,” said Mike Mansuetti, president, Robert Bosch LLC. “Guided by our slogan ‘Invented for Life,’ we are compelled to use our resources to let those impacted by the disaster know that we care.”

but a business model. I always like to tell people that if they had a brand new, never used, 1999 model car and were to drive it immediately after driving a 2013 model that the differences in technology would be astounding. iCOAT invests heavily in R&D and drives the market through the innovations we are continually making.

Q: That’s interesting; tell us more about that and what new technologies are on the horizon?

A: There have been huge advances in polymer technologies over the last few years; we have worked that and many other performance enhancing additives into our product line. We have an ionic bonding agent that multiplies coat to coat adhesion for sealers as well as concrete

Measures of support include: The Bosch Community Fund, in conjunction with Robert Bosch Tool Corporation, is contributing $100,000 in short-term relief to Habitat for Humanity earmarked to aid storm victims, as well as power tools worth $100,000 in value to support recovery efforts. Working in partnership, Bosch and Lowe’s will furnish 24 vans donated by General Motors with power tools and equipment. These “Mobile Response Units” will be driven by Habitat and partner volunteers, including Bosch associates, to assist residents of devas-

based products. I think that the next wave of advancements to our industry will be from some of the nanotechnology materials becoming available. We are already incorporating nano-pigments into our Metal Illusion line but I see a day when scratches in coatings will literally be able to ‘heal’ themselves.

Q: You mentioned revising not only products but also your business plan; please explain.

A: Typically decorative concrete products are manufactured by large companies and sold through concrete supply stores with salespeople that have little or no experience with the product lines. Decorative concrete is such an individual expression that it requires proper training and tech support to create successful

tated communities in Monmouth County, N.J. and Breezy Point, N.Y. The Bosch Community Fund will also contribute $100,000 to the United Way of Greater Lehigh Valley, Penn., to support home restoration for affected lowincome, elderly and disabled homeowners in Bethlehem—a Bosch community—and surrounding areas. Funding support will be reinforced by the in-kind donation of Bosch products such as boilers, security products, solar modules and water heaters, totaling up continued on page 52

installers. At iCOAT we sell our products through smaller distributors that also have an installation side to their business. We work with them so they can work with their local contractors to assure a quality end product.

Q: Does iCOAT have distributors everywhere?

A: I would love to say we do, but there are still many gaps we need to fill in this country and abroad. Q: How would a potential customer get more information?

A: We will be at the WOC 2013 in Booth #S12453 or can always be reached at 877669-1110 or visit our website at www.iCOATProducts.com.

history of Kubota and an overview of your business today?

A: Kubota Tractor Corporation celebrated 40 years in the United States in 2012. Its parent company, Kubota Corporation, was established in Japan in 1890; however, Kubota established itself in California in 1972 and introduced its first 12-horsepower, four-wheel drive tractor in 1974. Over the past four decades, Kubota has continued to expand its products with four lines of tractors and successfully introduced compact construction equipment, compact track loaders, turf equipment, lawn and garden equipment, utility vehicles and a variety of performance-matched implements and attachments. At the same time, the truck design was closely scrutinized by engineers for nearly eight months, customer focus groups were conducted and production package offerings were simplified. “Our old truck design required 13 different chassis configurations to meet all state requirements, and the 2013 truck requires only six,” says Jim Aslin, district manager for Terex Roadbuilding. “Additionally, we’ve streamlined drum offerings, so three different drums meet customer demand.”

equipment is sold and serviced in the U.S. through a nationwide network of more than 1,100 authorized Kubota dealers supported by the company’s corporate headquarters in Torrance, Calif., and four division offices located in Lodi, Calif.; Fort Worth, Texas; Groveport, Ohio; and Suwanee, Ga.

Q: Please tell us about your construction products and your vision for 2013?

A: Kubota’s increased emphasis in the construction market is a natural fit for Kubota’s strategic growth plan and stems from our parent company’s successful worldwide focus on excavators, and now the company’s newly introduced compact track loaders. The vision for 2013 is to energize the

1,100-strong Kubota dealer organization by developing and planning for exciting new products set to be introduced over the next five years, especially in markets where we have not competed before. Q: Is Kubota introducing new products at the show?

A: Yes. Among Kubota’s new 2013 construction equipment models, the KX040-4 is the most exciting because it provides us entry into the 4-5 ton segment. The KX0404 replaces our most popular model, the KX121-3, and offers a best-in-class cab with tremendous operator comfort features and a brand new fuel savings component called the “Eco Plus” system, which keeps productivity at 100 percent while achieving fuel savings of up to 20 percent. Q. What sets Kubota’s equipment

apart from your competitors? What are you most looking forward to at WOC?

A: All Kubota’s products are designed, engineered, and tested from the ground up, which results in durable and reliable products. While our dealers get the first look at our new products at our National Dealer Meeting each year, whether it’s an upgraded machine or a new machine entirely, a show like WOC gives us the opportunity to showcase our new products on a grand scale.

Q. How can our readers find out more information about Kubota?

sealed for use in all installation environments. The TruLink user interface is an 8 inch touch screen display that can be easily mounted within the operating cab of most prime movers. The rugged display is housed in an IP67 rated weather and shock proof casing. The high visibility touch screen allows the operator to easily interface with the system during installation. The intuitive layout of the display indicates all data in real time. All installation data is recorded independently for each pier and collec-

All data is easy to read and is ready for immediate job submittal without additional formatting. see two new mixer trucks with upward to 100 design changes. More than 20 modifications take place in the cab alone. Designers gained three inches of the room under the hood, resulting in an additional eight inches of floor space inside the cab. New hanging foot pedals, more durable door latches, brighter LED lights and rear vents that help with door closing also highlight improvements to the cab. Designers have made it much easier to get into and out of the cab with a new hanging step that offers three-point access. Additionally, a revised bolt-on ladder offers direct access to the chute cleanout platform. A greater angle of wheel cut substantially improves turning radius and enhances the ease of servicing for the steering system. “This is a game changer,” says Aslin. “The new steering

system takes full advantage of articulation to reduce curb-to-curb turning radius by 20 percent.” The FD5000 and F DB6000 also feature the latest design advancements for truck reliability. An entirely new air system increases reservoir capacity and incorporates a new lift axle control module valve that reduces the number of LACM valves by 75 percent. New bolton roller trunnions offer easier access and simplified position adjustment. Additionally, a new swing chute gearbox configuration increases torque and makes servicing easier.

Paving Bridges and Flatwork Also featured in the Terex booth, Terex Bid-Well will show the 4800 automatic roller paver and 2418 workbridge. Legendary for flexibility in tackling the most complex bridge designs, the 4800 also

paves with equal ease and efficiency light-duty flatwork applications such as port decks, urban development roads, sewer tank bottoms, warehouse floors and parking lots. The 4800’s 48-inch deep truss frame offers variable paving widths from 12- to 116-feet. Standard 18-foot truss end segments offer up to 15-feet leg travel to each side of the machine for on-the-fly variable width paving, so contractors can vary paving with up to 30-feet without rebuilding the truss frame. “For contractors using a vibratory screed to pave one, 12-foot wide slab at a time, the 4800 can pave twice as much concrete and half the time with half the labor force,” says Larry Eben, district manager for Terex Roadbuilding.

achieves all of these goals. The Outrigger Davit was developed for those cases in which rigging is needed to clear a tall parapet wall or other obstacle. Perhaps there is a feature raised above the rooftop surface, such as a penthouse wall face, decorative façade, or a sign that needs to be accessed. The conventional approach in these situations is to use either conventional scaffolding or tall stands to elevate the rooftop outrigger beams. Some of the challenges associated with this are the amount of additional

equipment that is needed to be lugged up to the rooftop (materials & labor), as well as the difficulty in dealing with rear beam counterweights for an outrigger beam that is 5, 6, 7 or more feet off of the rooftop surface. With a pivoting mast, the Outrigger Davit can be set up and rigged from rooftop level. Once in position, the mast and boom are tilted up and locked into place. The suspension wire rope can then be lowered over the edge, completing the installation while maintaining conventional counterweight and tie-back requirements. The Outrigger Davit can clear an 8 foot parapet and provide up to 4 feet of

looking to put tools in the hands of our customers that are intuitively more productive and easy to use.” The quality control process that goes in to both brands will remain unchanged, with manufacturing of both product lines continuing in the United States as it has for more than 200 years. The brands’ manufacturing operations are vertically integrated, leading to better efficiencies and higher quality— from the wood mills that shape the wooden handles to the tempering of steel. Because of this, domestic manufacturing operations for these brands employ more U.S. workers than all competitors combined. The brands also have national distribution centers that include Carlisle, Penn. and Reno, Nev.;

to allow quick and ready reaction to customer needs. Overall, the brands’ dedication to spending more time on jobsites testing product and interacting with professionals will continue to keep Razor-Back and Jackson the tools of choice for the professional. The on-the-job experience will not only hone product features but will also help to build tools based on changing environmental needs. pour below grade, avoid concrete drains, and to lift off steel at the end of a run. For contractors involved in parking lot work, the 5700-C turns a radius of less than one meter. This tight radius steering allows contractors to pour parking lot islands, eliminating expensive handwork. Additional recent enhancements include a right-hand pour option in addition to the traditional left hand set up. Contractors faced with projects that force them to pour with the flow of traffic love the ability to go from left to right hand pouring. Converting the machine from

left to right side pour, is simple, and only takes a few hours. Power Curbers’ Smart Amp controls give the machine the sophistication of digitally networked systems with the ease and simplicity of analog controls. Inexperienced operators can easily be trained on this system. Standard equipment on the Power Curber 5700-C includes a 130 HP Cummins engine, three Berco crawlers, two Wyco vibrators, four sensors and one curb and gutter mold built to specifications. Power Curbers, based in Salisbury,

N.C., USA, has been in business since 1953, and has machines in more than 80 countries worldwide.
