We are thrilled to release our second edition of the Mobility & Equipment eGuide! Following a hugely successful launch edition last year, we had such a fantastic response we had no choice but to release our next version – with updates and all the latest mobility products and equipment on the market.
We’ve covered manual and powered wheelchairs, pushchairs and strollers, bikes and trikes, standers, walkers, seating and positioning, bathroom aids and beds and sleep systems.
I hope this eGuide becomes your AT bible –we’ve tried to ensure a variation of products are included to suit all needs and abilities. We have also included a helpful directory on our website outlining the suppliers of each product and their direct resellers within each state to make it easy to go directly to the source.

What happens at A MOBILITY EQUIPMENT FITTING
When your child is fitted for a piece of mobility equipment such as a wheelchair, walker or stander, the primary goal is to assess their needs and ensure that the equipment meets their specific requirements. Much of the information gathered will be used for an NDIS funding application but it also serves an important practical use in ensuring that any equipment prescribed will be functionally appropriate for your child.
The fitting process typically involves several steps and may vary depending on the specific device and your child’s needs. Here’s an overview of what may happen during a fitting:
Evaluation and assessment
The fitting process begins with a comprehensive evaluation and assessment of your child’s abilities, mobility requirements, physical measurements, and any specific medical or therapeutic needs. A team of professionals, including occupational therapists, physical therapists, and assistive technology specialists, may be involved in this process.
Discussion of goals
Parents or caregivers, along with the professionals, will discuss the goals and expectations for the assistive technology. This helps in determining the appropriate type of equipment and customisation required to meet your child’s needs effectively.
Equipment selection
Based on the evaluation and goals discussed, the team will recommend the most suitable product. Depending on the product category, they will consider factors such as the child’s mobility level, posture and positioning requirements, terrain and environment of use (does the home have narrow doorways for example), and any additional accessories or adaptations needed.
Measurements and adjustments
Precise measurements of your child’s body dimensions will be taken to ensure proper fit and comfort. This includes height, weight, seating posture, leg length, arm length, and more. The equipment will be adjusted and customised accordingly to provide optimal support and functionality.
Trial and evaluation
Once the initial adjustments are made, professionals may closely observe your child’s comfort, posture, alignment, and ability to manoeuvre or operate the device. They may make further modifications based on the child’s feedback and observations during a trial period.
Training and education
You can work with a provider to obtain training on how to properly operate and maintain the assistive technology. You’ll also learn about safety precautions, adjustments, transfers, and general care of the equipment. Additionally, you may receive guidance on incorporating the equipment into your child’s daily activities and therapeutic routines.
Follow-up and review
After the fitting, a follow-up session may be scheduled to assess the child’s progress with the equipment. This allows for any necessary fine-tuning or adjustments to be made to ensure ongoing optimal performance and address any emerging needs.
Wheelchairs
Specific requirements
FOR DIFFERENT TYPES OF ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY
Factors such as a child’s ability to self-propel, level of trunk control, and need for specialised seating or positioning are considered. Based on the evaluation, a team will recommend a suitable wheelchair type, such as manual, powered, or specialised options like tilt-in-space or reclining wheelchairs. The appropriate seating system, cushions, and accessories are also discussed.
Standers
A child’s weight-bearing abilities, range of motion, and positioning needs are evaluated. The goal is to promote weightbearing and maintain proper alignment. The appropriate type of stander (e.g., mobile, static, supine, prone) is chosen based on the child’s needs. Accessories like trunk supports, knee supports, and ankle supports are discussed if required.
Walkers
A child’s walking ability, balance, and weight-bearing capacity are assessed. The need for upper-body support and stability is also considered. The appropriate type of walker (e.g., posterior, anterior, reciprocal) is selected based on the child’s needs. Features like wheels, brakes, and accessories (e.g., forearm supports) are discussed if required.
Strollers
Seating and positioning needs during transportation are assessed.
Considerations include postural support, head control, comfort, and ease of transfers. The appropriate stroller type is selected based on the child’s needs, such as lightweight, folding, or specialised positioning strollers. Options like reclining features, adaptive seating, and headrests are discussed.
Overall, the fitting process for any piece of assistive technology equipment aims to ensure that the product meets the child’s individual needs, promotes independence, is safe to use, and contributes positively to their overall well-being. It involves a collaborative approach between the child, parents or caregivers, and a team of professionals with expertise in paediatric rehabilitation and assistive technology.
ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY AND THE NDIS
Assistive Technology (AT) includes equipment or devices that can help your child with disability perform tasks more easily and safely. Learn how you and your child can access the benefits of AT support.
Adding AT to your child’s NDIS Plan
The aim of any AT is to help your child achieve the goals outlined in their NDIS Plan. So your first step is to ensure the addition of AT aligns with these outcomes.
If your child’s goals need to be changed, you can use wording such as:
• Maintain or improve independence
• Increase ability to access the community
• Improve quality of life
To have AT included in your child’s Plan you may also want to get a letter of support from an allied health practitioner. If an assessment is required, it should outline how many hours they would need to select, purchase and provide training for the appropriate piece of AT.
How is AT categorised?
There are different levels of AT funding and each has its own evidence and usage requirements.
How you approach purchasing AT depends on the category your equipment or device.
There are three categories of AT: low, mid and high cost. Each one has its own rules and requirements:
Low-cost AT: under $1,500
• Funding is from the Core budget in your Plan
• No quote is needed
• No written evidence is needed to get funding
• Low-risk item: it’s best to get advice from an AT advisor before purchasing
• High-risk item: you must get written advice from an AT advisor
Mid-cost AT: $1,500 – $15,000
• Funding is from the Capital budget in your Plan
• No quote is needed
• Written advice from an AT advisor is needed to get funding and before buying the item
High-cost AT: over $15,000
• Funding is from the Capital budget in your Plan
• A quote is needed
• You need an assessment from an AT assessor to get funding in your Plan
• You need an assessment from an AT assessor before buying the item
Who can advise you on AT for your child?
Before you purchase any AT, be sure to get advice from professionals who are working with your child. These are called AT advisors and can include:
• Allied health practitioners
• Orientation and mobility specialists for the vision sector
• Continence nurses
• Rehabilitation engineer
For high-cost AT you need to consult with
a Specialised Assistive Technology Assessor. They will assess your situation and identify the equipment or device most appropriate for your child. They can also write assessments, which you’ll need when purchasing high-cost AT.
Speak with your child’s current therapy team to find an AT Assessor. Make sure you ask how much assessments will cost.
If you have AT money left in your budget towards the end date of your Plan
You can use the remaining funds to buy low to mid-cost AT, provided you have a supporting letter from your AT advisor.
If you have a Plan Manager, it’s a good idea to also inform them of your intention before you purchase.
Understanding your AT service agreements
When purchasing high-cost AT, a service agreement from your AT advisor is essential.
You will need to include a few hours in your Capacity Building budget to sign an initial shorter agreement.
This way you can ensure the AT advisor has a good understanding of your child’s needs, as well as any NDIS requirements.
After signing the shorter agreement, you can sign a further agreement to complete the process.
This will need to contain several hours allocated for:
• Trialling various brands of the equipment or device
• Liaising with suppliers for best price and ongoing manufacturer support
• Delivery and assembly needs
• Training on the equipment or device (across relevant settings)
• Providing repairs, maintenance and rentals
What to do if your AT application is denied
If your application for AT is denied, you have options to appeal the decision.
If you have a Support Coordinator (SC) be sure to keep them involved through the process. Especially if you are requesting high-cost equipment or devices. Your SC should:
• Keep you informed on the status of your application
• Get the Local Area Coordinator to provide written reasons for the application denial
• Support you in requesting a review

High-cost mobility aids and equipment
Buying high-cost assistive technology for your child or young adult can be daunting. High-cost AT can be more complex, and there are more requirements from the NDIS to get funding approved.
Experienced Leap in! plan manager Tabitha is here to help. Tabitha answers some common questions about NDIS high-cost mobility aids and equipment category, so you’re well placed to find the best option for improving your child or young person’s mobility and independence.
QWhat is considered high- cost assistive technology (AT)?
High-cost assistive technology is any item of AT that costs more than $15,000. By its nature, high-cost AT tends to be complex to use or set up. It’s sometimes custom-made to meet an individual’s needs.
High-cost AT includes a range of mobility equipment such as power wheelchairs, scooters and some advanced walking aids.
QHow do I know if my child needs high-cost assistive technology?
A healthcare professional, such as an occupational therapist or physiotherapist, will be able to assist in determining if high-cost assistive technology might be right for your child. They’ll evaluate your child’s mobility, daily living and goals to recommend the most suitable equipment. The NDIS may include funding in your child’s plan for an AT assessment if they haven’t already had one.
QCan the NDIS cover the cost of high-cost mobility aids?
The NDIS can fund high-cost mobility aids if they are deemed reasonable and necessary to help your child achieve their goals and participate in daily activities. You’ll need to provide the completed AT assessment along with detailed recommendations and quotes
from suppliers with your request.
If the NDIS approves the purchase of the item, it will appear in your child’s plan as a stated support under the Capital supports budget. That means you can only purchase the item stated in the plan and not an alternative or different brand for example.
QI’m not sure which item will be best for my child. Can I use my child’s NDIS funding to trial assistive technology?
Absolutely! With so many brands and options available, it’s often a good idea to test an item before making a purchase or rental commitment. Some providers offer free trials of their products.
If a free trial isn’t available, you can use your child’s NDIS funds to cover the cost. For children on a PACE plan, funding for trials comes from the new Capital supports – Assistive technology, maintenance, repair and rental budget. If your child has an older or legacy plan, you may be able to use Core supports flexibly to fund the trial.
Remember to include details about the outcome of any trials with any AT assessment.
QMy child wants a custom wheelchair with certain features. Will the NDIS cover this?
The NDIS may cover the cost of a wheelchair with specific features if it is considered reasonable and necessary to meet your child’s needs. This
may include customised seating, controls or other accessories.
However, it’s important to note that the NDIS will generally only fund the standard level of AT needed based on a person’s goals, such as a wheelchair with standard features and specifications.
In deciding whether to fund an item, the NDIS will compare the quotes to expected price ranges for a similar item to determine if the proposed AT is good value for money. If less expensive options are available that will suit your child’s needs, the NDIS is likely to fund the cheaper choice.
QWhat support is available if my child has issues with their mobility aid?
If your child has difficulty using the aid, check in with your OT or physiotherapist. They can help demonstrate the best way to use the equipment based on your child’s needs and help you resolve any problems.
If you encounter any technical or performance issues with a mobility aid, it’s best to contact the supplier first. They may be able to assist with an adjustment or advice. It’s a good idea to check the purchase paperwork first to find out what’s covered under warranty.

TOP TIPS
Did you know you can ask for AT at any time?
As your child or teen’s goals and needs are constantly changing, there is built-in flexibility in the NDIS for AT requests. If your child or teen’s needs have changed, you can contact the NDIS at any time. While an AT request can be submitted at any time during your child’s plan, please note that your request may initiate a plan reassessment by the NDIS.
How long does the process take from assessment to receiving equipment?
The timeline can vary depending on several factors, including the complexity of your child’s needs, the availability of the equipment and the approval process. It typically involves an assessment, obtaining quotes, submitting the funding request, and waiting for approval. Once approved, the supplier will order and deliver the equipment.
What should I do with high-cost AT funded by the NDIS that is no longer needed?
If you have purchased the equipment, you can take it to a service in the community that accepts and refurbishes used equipment or donate it to charity. If it is under a lease agreement, you need to return it to the provider. Depending on the item, you may also be able to sell it privately.
SPECIAL PURPOSE STROLLERS INTRODUCTION TO
Strollers make life as a parent easier – they provide a means to move your child around as you go about everyday activities. When a child has a disability, medical condition or developmental delay, there may be specific needs or considerations that can be better met through a special purpose stroller compared to continuing to use a stroller or pram purchased from a department type store.
Why might a special purpose stroller suit my child?
• Your child’s current stroller does not give them enough support to maintain a good sitting position, and you want to be able to access the community with your child.
• Your child fatigues easily, has difficulty walking long distances, or it’s more important for your child to conserve their energy for other activities in their day (such as playing with friends or siblings, going to daycare/school).
• Your child might have medical equipment they need to use when in the stroller, and you need to have places on the stroller to attach this to.
• Your child may have outgrown stroller options from everyday stores, but need support with their mobility in the community.
• Your child may be developing their safety and road awareness skills, and they need a harness on the stroller that they cannot open themselves to keep them safe when out in the community.
Benefits and features of special purpose strollers
• The special purpose strollers look similar in design to strollers sold at everyday stores. This means your child can use a stroller for everyday activities, such as going to the park or to visit family or friends, while ensuring their own individual needs are met to support their development, comfort and safety.
• Additional support for sitting and posture
– This might look like more support for the head, torso, around the hips and pelvis or at the feet. The types of additional sitting support will depend on the specific model of special purpose stroller. Supporting a good sitting position is important to support your child’s posture, breathing, digestion and joint development.
• Forward or rear facing – Some special purpose strollers have the option for rear facing, which is a great option for situations where a parent or carer feels more comfortable being able to see the child while pushing the stroller.
• In built growth – Some parts of the special purpose stroller can increase in size over
time, so your child can get maximum use out of the stroller over a longer period of time.
• Easy to fold – Special purpose strollers have similar folding mechanisms to strollers from department stores, so they often fold in a similar way.
• Seating adjustments – These can make sitting more comfortable and can increase how long some children can sit for, depending on their own individual needs.
• Storage – Special purpose strollers come with storage options including storage basket and options for storage of oxygen bottles, feeding pumps and suction machines.
• Accessories for everyday activities –examples can include a tray for meal-times or table top play, sun canopy for outdoor use and grab rail for additional stability or comfort depending on the specific stroller.
• You might want to be able to use stroller seat for indoor activities – some stroller seats come off the stroller base and attach to an indoor chair base. This means you only need one seat for two different uses!
How to choose a special purpose stroller
Let’s look at how to find a stroller that suits your child’s needs and lifestyle requirements from the range of options available. Having a clear understanding of the features needed in a special purpose stroller and how it will be used every day will help with identifying options to trial, meaning you will find a solution sooner!
What do you want to be able to do with the special purpose stroller?
This is the very first question you’ll need to answer when considering options. Will you be using it on flat, indoor surfaces only or on uneven terrain such as gravel? Will you only walk with the child in the special purpose stroller, or is going for a run with your child important to you? There are some changes to the wheel direction or wheel size that can be made depending on what you want to be able to do with the special purpose stroller.
Size and weight
Consider options that suit your child’s current size, but also accommodate for future growth. All special purpose strollers are designed to be used by users within a specific weight limit set by the manufacturer – it is important your child does not exceed the set weight limit.
Support and positioning options
There are special purpose strollers that are designed to offer more postural support through accessories that can be added to the stroller for additional head, neck, trunk, chest, pelvic and foot support. Not all special purpose strollers have the same range of additional postural support and positioning options. This is because certain strollers are tailored to children with fatigue management or community mobility safety needs, whereas others are designed for children with higher physical support needs. For example, a child requiring a special purpose stroller for assisting with behaviours of concern within
the community may be able to walk and may not need as much postural support compared a child who is fully dependent on a stroller for mobility within the community.
Accessory attachments
Consider whether your child has any medical equipment they will need to take with them. Only some special purpose strollers offer additional storage and attachment points for medical equipment, such as oxygen bottles, suction machines and feeding pumps.
Transport and lifting
Make sure you check that you can fold, lift and transport the special purpose stroller as some pack down more compactly than others.
Writing down a list of these points above can help clarify what is required in the stroller, as can discussing you and your child’s specific requirements for a special purpose stroller with your child’s occupational therapist or physiotherapist. Writing down a list can help the occupational therapist or physiotherapist more easily research suitable options to trial with you and your child.
