Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

EDITORIAL Building a Better, Safer Air Ambulance Service for Northern Manitoba Submitted by Ron Schuler, minister of infrastructure for the Manitoba government. Manitobans voted our government into office nearly three years ago on the expectation we would use taxpayer dollars in an effective and responsible way, while at the same time improving the services they depend on. This is exactly what we’re endeavouring to do with Lifeflight – an air ambulance service which provides critical care for patients living in remote corners of the province and Manitoba’s north. We want to build a better, safer service for patients that delivers more for taxpayers’ hard-earned money. We’ve seen countless examples of how spend-
ing more and more money to address problems often doesn’t work. The people living in this province know they need a government that will get its financial house in order as well as focus on getting better value for the taxpayer money it spends. That has meant a painstaking review of departments and programs to determine what’s working and what can be improved upon. With Lifeflight, what we’ve discovered is the system has been neglected for years. A program review completed last year found several interesting things, including: • The use of private carriers for critical air ambulance flights has been doubling annually since 2014,
when the former NDP government was still in office. The 2017/18 fiscal year was a tipping point, with Lifeflight using private carriers more often than the province’s two Citation jets for a variety of reasons, including maintenance; and • A better and more consistent level of service might be possible for Lifeflight if Manitoba followed the lead of provinces like Alberta, B.C. and Ontario and formalized the contracting out of flights to a private carrier. While such a plan makes all sorts of fiscal sense, it is vital that any decision takes into account the continued health and well-being of any Manitoban who uses the service. As the request for proposals (RFP) process moves along, we’ve
said time and time again that any alternate plan must maintain – if not improve upon – current service and safety levels. In short, we’re attempting to build a better, safer service for patients that delivers more for taxpayer’s hard-earned money. If the private sector can’t provide an option that improves upon the current model, we won’t move forward. If all of this sounds reasonable to you, that’s because it is common sense. It makes even more sense when you consider that the majority of Canada’s provinces use private carriers to provide air ambulance services. Unfortunately, the NDP, the same party who oversaw the initial rise in Lifeflight’s use of private carri-
ers in the first place, are now fearmongering about safety issues, with help from their public sector unions. It’s an absurd argument, as there’s no evidence to suggest safety has been compromised in other provinces where private carriers are used. Regrettably, Lifeflight air ambulance’s leadership continues to issue new conditions and threatens to withhold service. We have met with these physicians a number of times and we’ve addressed their key issues, hiring two new pilots and accelerating scheduled maintenance of one of the province’s jets as a demonstration of our intent to keep the program strong while the RFP process continues into the spring. But we owe it to Manitobans to ensure government
programs work as safely and efficiently as possible. The northern air ambulance program should not and will not be exempted from such scrutiny. While our government must develop plans to ensure the service continues in the event northern air ambulance withholds service, it’s not a scenario our government or anyone prefers to see play out in real time. We will continue to talk with these physicians about the important place Lifeflight has within our transformed health system and their obligation to properly staff flights. We will also continue to protect the interests of taxpayers by considering ways to improve the safety and efficiency of government programs.

Souris & Glenwood Agricultural Society Canteen & Washrooms Project By Jesse Goodwill, Souris Ag Society Some of you may have heard about the donations and grants the Souris & Glenwood Agricultural Society received for the canteen & washrooms project at the fairground. The Ag Society would like an opportunity to explain what the project is about and give recognition to the donations and grants they received as of March 2, 2019. In 2017, the Ag Society decided that the best longterm and feasible option would be to construct new
canteen and washroom facilities. The fairground main building has outside open storage space on the north and south side (with a roof), and indoor space in the middle. The goal is to install the men & women washrooms with two showers on the north side, and a canteen and accessible washroom on the south side of this building. Currently, the sewage/water lines are in the ground, and the floor plumbing and cement are completed. Thank you to Arbuckle Electric, Ryckman Plumbing and Heating, Municipality of
Souris-Glenwood, and volunteers for completing this phase of the project before winter. The next phase is to complete the canteen and accessible washroom before they host their annual fair. With adequate washrooms and a canteen, the Ag Society and rural surrounding community groups (including Souris Minor Ball) and individuals will have more opportunities to use the fairground facilities to host more agricultural, recreational, educational and community events including tournaments, fun-

draisers, clinics, meetings and private functions such as weddings and school/ family reunions. With the opportunity to host more educational events, this will support the rural communities, local clubs and organizations to learn and obtain skills, and to gain knowledge about the fast-changing agricultural industry, sports skills, healthy physical activities and many more. Hosting more events will enhance the quality of life for the people who live in the area by bringing the community together and attract more users to host their events at the fairground, thus bringing more people to our community. To reach their $100 000 project goal, the Souris & Glenwood Agricultural Society started the funding by reserving $5 000 for the project and raised $1035.16 at the annual fair supper. They also received an anonymous donation of $10 055, and $40 240 in donations and grants. Therefore, this brings the total of $56,330.16 towards the project. The Ag Soci-

loser left out of the dance! The team responded well and played another solid first half. The team used its depth to wear down the Flames and held a seven-
point advantage at halftime. However, the third quarter again proved to be troublesome for the group, as they had struggled to score and fell behind by three points entering the fourth quarter. With their season on the line the team responded midway through the quarter as they went on a 11-0 run to take the lead behind a big three pointer by Erica Luptak. With Steinbach pressing hard Michelle Perez was fouled and stepped to the free line hitting a key free throw with 12 seconds remaining to put the team up four points. With the bench going crazy Kaedynce pulled down her 12th rebound of the game at the defensive end as time expired sending the Sabres to Provincials! Hugs, tears, and lots of cheering followed for a team that has fought tirelessly all season to achieve their goal of playing in March Madness! Loughran) Plusses and Minuses, roundabouts and swings, Life’s full of ups and downs, It’s just the way of things. We cannot see the future, we move on come what may. But if we reach rock bottom, “UP” is the only way Words To Think About: Helen Keller, that brave and remarkable lady, once wrote that when one door to happiness closes, another opens, but often we stand looking so long at the closed door we don’t notice the one that has opened! Remember the HandiVan goes in every third Wednesday to Brandon (next trip will be March 20) so if you would like to go, give our office a call and we will get you booked on the next trip. Also If you need a ride to Brandon, or around town and the Handi-Van is booked we do have a few drivers that will help you get to where you need to go. Victoria Lifeline Service: This service will get you assistance with just the push of a button seven days a week, 24 hours a day. Better to have one and never need it than to need
it and wish you had it! Call us at the office for more information. Once we get the paper work done and faxed in we can usually have you hooked up in just a few days! For your Entertainment: Dale and Brenda Lyons will be coming to VPL in March to share their gift of country music with a guitar, keyboard and voices. Come and enjoy them and join in singing the songs you know and love. Donations welcome. If you are de-cluttering and getting rid of what they don’t use any more and happen to have yarn that you don’t need, we have a few clients who still love to knit and will be sure to put it to good use. Just gives us a call and we can pick it up or you can drop it off at the office anytime. Thank you.
