Local man remembered through Pieter’s 500 By Darci Semeschuk When Pieter passed away in 2010, he had been battling Parkinson’s disease and had faced mental health issues as a result of

that disease. For the last two years of his life, Pieter had struggled with depression. According to his wife Kim, Pieter had suffered with early onset Parkin-

son’s disease that had been difficult to diagnose. He finally received a diagnosis in 2005. “When Pieter was feeling depressed Dr Stone (Pieter’s doctor at the time) found it strange,” she explained. “He said he had never seen any other Parkinson’s patients act that way; however he also admitted that he didn’t know a lot about Parkinson’s disease.” Kim went on to say that she has recently done further research into the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. “I decided to read about Parkinson’s disease again and discovered that they now say that patients who have the disease also

deal with depression. So I think this is something that the medical field is finally accepting - that yes, depression is a symptom of Parkinson’s disease.” Recently the Neepawa Miles for Mental Health (MMH) committee announced the launch of Pieter’s 500. Pieter’s sister, Ineke and her husband, Rey Mack will be hiking the Pieterpad in the Netherlands in memory of Pieter. The hike that they are embarking on is approximately 500 kilometres and the route, according to a map sent to us by Kim, runs between Pieterburen and Masstricht. It is expected to take four to five weeks

to complete. “I saw an article about this 500-kilometre walk called Pieterpad, and I knew I had to do it in his memory,” said Ineke Mack, in an interview with the Brandon Sun. They will start their walk this April in the Netherlands and will be joined for several days by her cousins who live in Holland. “(They’ll be walking) in the memory of the cousin that they lost,” she said. Pieter’s 500 is an opportunity to raise awareness and funds for mental health programs in the community. Pledge sheets, hard copies and online, will be available in March at several locations in Neepawa

and Souris, Pieter’s home community. Those wishing to support can purchase one kilometre for $5.00 or a segment (approximately 20 kilometres) for $100.00. Progress reports will be posted on the MMH website and on social media. All proceeds will be donated to Miles for Mental Health. People can donate to the cause at the Souris Pembina Co-op where Pieter used to work, It’s Time Fashion & Gifts store in Neepawa, at Inspire Studio in Minnedosa or by making a contribution to Neepawa Miles for Mental Health under de Koning’s name.

The route that Ineke and Rey Mack will be taking during the Pieterpad runs from Masstricht to Pieterburen.

Ineke Mack and her husband, Rey are embarking on a nearly 500-kilometre walk in the Netherlands called the Pieterpad. Ineke is doing this in honour of her late brother, Pieter de Koning who passed with complications from Parkinson’s disease and mental health issues.

Walk stirs up memories The family of Pieter de Koning is preparing to be part of the Neepawa Pieter 500, a walk to raise funds for mental health held in memory of Pieter de Koning. Pictured here in happier times is Pieter and his family (L_R): Justin, Kim, Jacy, Pieter and Jill. PHOTO/SUBMITTED

a shootout. The Cougars visited Central Plains on Saturday night and suffered an embarrassing 7-2 thrashing at the hands of the Capitals. The Cougars 1 point weekend saw the Winni-

peg Thrashers tie the Cougars for fourth place with 61 points with 6 games remaining in the regular season. The Cougars have a pair of games with Yellowhead at home, and one with Brandon with 3

games on the road to finish the regular season. In Melita, Roux Bazin opened the scoring 2 minutes into the game with the man advantage. The Cougars held the Hawks to 8 shots in the period while firing 12 shots on the Hawks net. The Cougars fired 17 shots in the second period but scored the only goal as Hunter Andrew fired a Cory King rebound home to even the score 15 minutes in the second frame. The third saw Roux Bazin score his second of the game giving the Hawks the lead. Cory King then scored on the power play to even the score less than 2 minutes later with Hunter Andrew and Matthew Ramsey setting the goal up. The teams played a scoreless overtime with

chances at both ends sending the game to shootout. The Cougars failed to find the net on three shots while Andrew Boucher the Hawks second shooter buried the game winner. Caden Wilson turned aside 33 Hawks shots while Dylan Meulin turned aside 39 Cougar shots for the win. Central Plains 7- Cougars 2 The Cougars jumped out to a 1 goal lead early in the first when Cody Shearer fired home a shot from the point with Tanner Clyne picking up the assist. The Capitals then took over in the second scoring 3 times and started off the third with 3 more goals before Braeden Lewis hooked up with Grady Lane and Tyson Kozak to make it 6-2 thirteen min-

utes into the frame. The Caps finished the scoring 2 minutes later too send the Cougars to their loss of the weekend. Randy Cooke was under siege all night facing 36 shots. He was forced to make some huge saves and anytime there was a rebound in ended up on a Caps stick and back behind him on a one timer. The defence had no answer to the Capitals play in the front of the net. Ciaran McVickar had an easy time with a 17 save for the win. The Cougars have a midweek game with Yellowhead before heading to Winnipeg to face the Bruins and off to Interlake for a pair of games. They finish with a pair of games as Brandon visits on the 20th before hosting the Chiefs again next Friday night.

The Rural Interest Group (RIG) weekend initiative promoted the benHĂ€WV RI SUDFWLFLQJ PHGLcine in rural communities. 6RPH Ă€UVW DQG VHFRQG year medical students split their time this year between the communities of Brandon and Minnedosa. PMH VP of Medical and Diagnostic Services Dr. Shaun Gauthier says the RIG workshop assists the health region by engaging medical students early in their training. “This is always an excellent chance for the medical students to see what

opportunities —both work and lifestyle-related— await within our region. Students appreciated the network of services that are available within Brandon Regional Health Centre as well as the wide scope of practice of rural physicians in tight-knit communities like Minnedosa, Gauthier stated. The Rural Interest Group has been a mainstay at visiting Brandon Regional Health Centre (BRHC) since 2010. The region has also helped pair smaller rural communities into the event plan, having hosted students in Killarney, Neepawa, Souris, Swan River and Virden in previous years. Dr. Fortier came to Notre Dame in 1987. “I was only going to commit for two years, partly due to a Return of Service agreement that I had with Manitoba Health at that time. Stomp out stigma of mental health Submitted 75% of young Canadians with mental health problems don’t seek help. Brandon & Area SPIN (Suicide Prevention Implementation Network) partnered with the Mental Health Commission of Canada’s Headstrong Youth Anti-Stigma Initiative in 2015. It is based

on their award-winning Opening Minds program, which is an evidence-based approach to reducing stigma. We know that high school is when many begin to experience symptoms often associated with mental health problems or mental illness. However, because of stigma and a

lack of understanding and education, many students don’t know who to turn to for help or are too embarrassed or scared to discuss their feelings. Stigma is destructive and makes people feel different and socially excluded. It delays diagnoses and treatment and is a major barrier for those that need help.

SPIN will be hosting our 3rd STOMP OUT STIGMA Summit on February 28, 2019 at the A. R. McDiarmid Civic Complex in Brandon. Approximately 100 grade 9-12 students and staff from Brandon and surrounding rural schools will participate in an energetic day of education and conversation sur-

Manitoba Hydro Safety Tips

Fun By The Numbers Like puzzles? Then you’ll love sudoku. This mind-bending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment you square off, so sharpen your pencil and put your sudoku savvy to the test!

rounding mental health, stigma and the importance of seeking help at a young age. The students/teachers will listen to speakers with lived experience and participate in break-out sessions to explore stigmatizing beliefs and stereotypes. The student and teacher champions will return with tools, ideas, and activities to be implemented locally in their schools following

Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Continued from Page 7 from carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colourless and odourless gas that can result from a faulty appliance, a clogged chimney, inadequate venting, back drafting of flue gases, or a buildup of engine exhaust in a garage. A CO alarm can alert you to the presence of deadly carbon monoxide gas. It is important to keep vents clear and the area around your furnace clean for proper ventilation. Service interruptions Although the system

that delivers electricity to your home is very reliable, power outages can occur. If you experience a service interruption, first determine if the power outage is limited to your home. Check the breakers for a tripped circuit or blown fuse and correct the problem if that is the case. If the neighbours are also without power, call Manitoba Hydro so a repair crew can be sent out as quickly as possible. Supply any information you can about the possible cause such as a storm in the area or car accident nearby.
