Shrove Tuesday held at St. Paul’s United Church St. Paul’s United Church in Souris held a very successful Shrove Tuesday on March 5. Shrove Tuesday is the term used in the United Kingdom, Australia and Canada to refer to the day after Shrove Monday and before Ash Wednes-
day. In some regions it is known as Pancake Day or Pancake Tuesday, because it is customary to eat pancakes on this day. The reason that pancakes are associated with the day preceding Lent is that the 40 days of Lent form a period during
which only the plainest food my be eaten. Therefore, rich ingredients such as eggs, milk, and sugar are disposed of immediately prior to the commencement of the fast. Pancakes and doughnuts were therefore an
efficient way of using up these perishable goods, besides providing a minor feast prior to the fast itself. This year’s Easter takes place from Good Friday on April 19 until Easter Monday on April 22 – making Easter Sun-
day on April 21. The death of Jesus occurred around the Jewish Passover, which is traditionally held on the first full moon following the vernal equinox. As the full moon can vary in each time zone, the Church said that they
would use the 14th day of the lunar month instead – The Paschal Full Moon – and host Easter Day on the following Sunday. Once the date of that moon is known, Easter Day and the Easter holiday can be determined.

An outstanding career comes to an end
Konektis performs at United Church Submitted Konektis, a vibrant, talented group of 45 voices presented an evening of excellent choral music at St. Paul’s United Church on Sunday, March 10. The members range in age from 18-50 and come from the communities of Carberry, Virden, Souris, Moosomin, Killarney, Brandon, Minnedosa, Erickson and Newdale. This Choir has brought together many talented singers, including many alumni singers from the Westman Youth Choir, many local educators and 18 music educators. Konektis is led by Michelle Chyzyk of Virden and accompanied by Justine Burke of Carberry and included singers such as Grant Jackson, Lesley Taggert (Towler) and Souris School early years music teacher Brady Chyzyk. Lauryn Keen, granddaughter of Souris’ Donna Russell has out the finishing touches on what can only be described as an outstanding university experience both academically and on the ice with the University of Manitoba Bison hockey team. Her last foray on the ice with her team will be March 14 – 17 where she, along with her teammates will play for a second straight Western Conference title. Keen caps off an outstanding career submitted On Saturday, February 1 eight members of the University of Manitoba Bisons Women’s hockey team, who are graduating, were honoured in an on-ice ceremony for their years of playing with the team. Lauryn Keen, daughter of Myrna and Ray Keen and granddaughter of Souris’ Donna Russell, has been with the team for five years and will graduate with a degree in Agriculture. Each of the graduating girls was given a tribute outlining their contributions to the team. The following is Lauryn’s: “Forward Lauryn Keen has shown an outstanding ability to score since joining the Bisons. She’s led the team in scoring in two seasons, including 11 goals and 12 assists, heading into the weekend of February 1. Recently she became the third Bison player to pass the 100-career point mark. Keen is the first and only Bison player in program history to earn the Canada West Outstanding Player of the Year in 2016 – 2017. A 34-point season that also came with a scor-
ing title, a Conference First Team All-star nod, and University Sports First Team All Canadian honour. Keen’s career totals are 35 goals and 65 assists, playing in an amazing 134 games of a possible 136 games. Keen has also been an Academic All Canadian in all five years of her eligibility.” Since this presentation Lauryn has added more points and has once again been named to the First Allstar Team for the Western Conference, which consists of eight universities. Two of Lauryn’s teammates were also named to the First Allstar Team. Last year the Bisons went to nationals in London. In a great team effort in the final game against London, Lauryn scored the overtime goal and was named MVP of the tournament. Once again, along with the University of Edmonton Pandas, the Bisons will represent the Western Conference in Charlottetown, PEI on March 14 – 17. We hope once again that they can bring home the trophy. If not they have had a great season.

EDITORIAL Free tax preparation available for qualified applicants Pierre Pelletier, Melita New Era As Benjamin Franklin famously said, “There are only two certainties in life - death and taxes.” And since death only comes around once but taxes are knocking at your door every year, wouldn’t it be nice to have someone help you with your return - financial that is. The Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP) is a free service spearheaded by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). Since 1973 it’s goal has remained the same: to help low-income individuals with simple tax situations complete and file their in-
come tax and benefit return. The CRA partners with groups such as the Prairie Mountain Health (PMH) region to help facilitate the program. They’ve been working together since 2001. “PMH is involved because of the understanding that income impacts health and filing a tax return gets people access to many benefit programs that will increase their income,” said Brett Turner, CVIPT Lead from PMH. Last year in the Prairie Mountain Health region, the total money in benefits and refunds to residents who used CVITP to complete their taxes was
$7,453,817 with the average return to an individual client around $3,441. Added Turner, “We completed over 2800 returns in 2018.” There are some restrictions. You can get your income tax return completed for free through the program if you fall under one of the following categories: • One person with an income under $35,000 • Two persons with an income under $45,000 • Three persons with an income under $47,500 For each additional dependent, you need to add $2,500. Additionally, said Turn-
er, they don’t do “...business, rental or farm income (tax returns). No bankruptcy or decreased returns. No capital gains or losses. Investment income (must be) under $1000. rent, RRSP, and tuition receipts. It would also be helpful if you brought last year’s notice of assessment, but it is not mandatory. They also need to see some form of identification. On the other side of the desk, there’s also a way you can volunteer - and you don’t need extensive experience. If you are interested in volunteering as a tax preparer for CITVP, you’ll require: experience filing tax returns for yourself or family, a basic understanding of how tax works, access to a computer and internet, be over 18 years of age, and in good standing with the CRA.
You would be expected to volunteer a couple of hours a week during March and April. Criminal charges laid against suspected fraudsters: Manitoba Public Insurance submitted A total of six charges have been laid against two individuals who allegedly committed separate frauds against Manitoba Public Insurance. “Following extensive investigations, these files were forwarded to the provincial prosecution office for review,” explained Curtis Wennberg, vice-president, Customer Service and COO. “These charges fall within either the Criminal Code, the MPIC Act or Highway Traffic Act. A conviction of any nature is a very serious consequence of auto insurance fraud. A criminal record can affect travelling
across the border, employment or business opportunities. Insurance fraud is not a victimless crime and this criminal activity affects honest Manitobans through their premiums.” Education about auto insurance fraud is further heightened, as March is Fraud Awareness Month in Canada. Recently, MPI announced that auto insurance fraud costs every Manitoba Public Insurance ratepayer about $50 a year on their annual vehicle insurance bill and honest Manitobans are helping MPI more than ever. Anyone with information about auto insurance fraud is encouraged to call
the Manitoba Public Insurance TIPS Line: 204-9858477 or toll-free 1-877985-8477. All calls are anonymous. Suspicious claims are handled by MPIs Special Investigation Unit which continues to enhance its investigative methods, saving Manitobans nearly $13 million in fraudulent claims last year — the highest claims savings in a decade. Names of the individuals are not being made public, as they are presumed innocent until proven guilty in the courts. Details of their alleged frauds are below: “Bogus hit and run claim” The registered owner
opened a hit and run claim with MPI after stating he discovered damage while washing his car. The tall tale quickly unravelled after an eyewitness came forward and said they had actually assisted the man, whose vehicle became stuck to another vehicle while backing up in a parking lot. After considerable effort both vehicles were detached. The man then quickly drove away without leaving any details. Fortunately, the eyewitness was able to provide a detailed description of the responsible driver and licence plate number. The 39-year-old Winnipeg man has been charged with:
• Failure to leave information • Fraud under $5,000 • Knowingly providing false information • Making false statement “Staged collision” The registered owner told his MPI adjuster that his vehicle had been struck by another vehicle. Damage was significant to both vehicles. An investigation was launched after MPI staff obtained additional information. An independent collision analyst was able to conclusively determine that a “bullet and target” collision was staged, whereas one vehicle is stationary at the time of the crash. When
presented with this information the registered owner withdrew his claim ($8,600 saving to MPI ratepayers). The 27-year-old Winnipeg man has been charged with the following: • Fraud over $5,000 • Provide false information More information about insurance fraud Fraud Prevention Month is an annual campaign held in March that aims to prevent Canadians from becoming victims of fraud. Insurance fraud – automobile, home or health care – costs Canadians more than $3 billion a year in premiums, according to the Insurance Bureau of Canada.

Bantam Elks “B” Side League Champions The Souris Bantam Boys hockey team won B-side League Championship on Wednesday, March 6th by defeating the Brandon Flyers in Game 3 with a 7 - 2 final. Seven of these players will be graduating from Souris Minor Hockey this year. These boys have been great teammates and friends off the ice for years. Inspiring a memory Every wing of Souris PCH will be painted in bright colours. These will be chosen based on studies on how colour is seen by the elderly. The objective is to fill each wall, not just with a random piece of artwork or old photos, but with large, beautiful, canvases and prints of scenes that will spark a memory or feeling of joy. Bantam Female Elks earn 3rd Provincial “A” title Submitted The Souris Bantam Female Elks have won their third Provincial A Championship and fourth in five years with a very strong performance in Hamiota. The 2018/19 Bantam Female Elks had a very successful season. The lost in the finals of the league play downs two games straight to a very strong Brandon team. The score in both games was 3 - 2. The Provincial A host site was Hamiota and the opening match was against Manitou who Souris defeated 2 - 0 behind a very strong performance from goalie Emily Speers. The remaining two round robin games saw the girls beat Grand Plains 8 -3 and Hamiota 7 - 0. This set us up for a 9:00 a.m. Sunday
morning showdown with a hardworking competitive Westman Falcons team and the Elks escaped with a 3 - 2 overtime victory when McKenna Beard’s point shot was deflected in 15 seconds into overtime. This set up a Provincial Final match up with the same Brandon team that beat them in league. The Elks would not be denied this time as the line of Brynn Tosh, Aly Samels and Paige Kozak combined for 12 points in a 5 - 1 victory. This was the third straight Provincial A championship for this Elks team and fourth in the past five years. For many of these girls it will be there final game as a Souris Elk and certainly a memorable way for it to end.
