Good things to know: Important telephone numbers Czech telephone country code: +420 The most important institutions have three-digit telephone numbers. The following numbers are toll-free: 112 – integrated emergency number; 155 – emergency medical care; 158 – police; 156 – town police; 150 – fire department Directory assistance: 1180 and 1181 Shopping and business hours All larger towns feature supermarkets and shopping zones. The majority of banks and offices are closed on Saturday, Sunday, and on state holidays. Regular shops are also closed on Saturday and holidays, while supermarkets and hypermarkets are typically open on these days without larger restrictions. Holidays January 1, Easter Monday, May 1, May 8, July 5 and 6, September 28, October 28, November 17, December 24, 25, 26. Official currency The official currency used in the Czech Republic is the Czech crown (Kč) with the international abbreviation CZK. The crown is divided into 100 halers and the smallest coin in circulation is the 50 haler piece. There are also a great number of locations that accept payment in EURO, including the majority of retail chains, stores selling electronic goods, petrol stations, and restaurants.
Automatic teller machines and payment cards The Czech Republic has an extensive network of automatic teller machines that accept all international credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, Plus, Maestro, Cirrus, and others). The vast majority of larger stores, hotels, and restaurants also accept credit cards. Currency exchanges Money can be exchanged at many locations in the Czech Republic, but not on the street! Currency exchanges are located in highly visible locations in every large town. At private currency exchanges it is best to ask first what the exact payout will be: a sign claiming “0% commission” often does not apply to sales but to foreign currency purchases! Language The official language of the country is Czech. In larger towns you will have no trouble communicating in English. The older generation knows Russian and some people speak German. Internet The Czech Republic has good internet connections and therefore, with few exceptions, you should have no difficulty getting on line. Health care The Czech Republic has both private and state-operated health care facilities. The majority of these have insurance contracts for the provision and payment of health care services. Insured patients are provided care without direct payment (this concerns EU citizens with European health cards). Source: www.czechtourism.com 3

The programme begins in ancient Olomouc, the seat of the archdiocese since 1777, and the Archdiocesan Museum, opened in 2006, featuring collections of liturgical objects and even a gold-plated bishop’s coach. Olomouc has the greatest number of churches per capita in the Czech Republic; these include the pilgrimage church on Svatý Kopeček. Kroměříž was the summer residence of the Olomouc archbishops. The Archbishop’s Castle and gardens are true Czech landmark gems. The castle’s famous picture gallery includes paintings by such masters as Titian, Lucas Cranach, and Jan Bruegel. Other features include the Bishop’s Mint, which holds the second most valuable collection of Church coins in the world after the Vatican, and the Archbishop’s wine cellars below the castle. The Kroměříž Museum houses a collection of works by the artist Max Švabinský as well as numerous sacred objects. Svatý Hostýn, the most heavily visited pilgrimage site in Moravia, is just down the road. But the most important spiritual site, Velehrad, is the final destination on this tour. Connected with the Christian missionaries, St. Cyril and Methodius, Velehrad attracts thousands of pilgrims each year.

Radhošť. This captivating adventure offers numerous pleasant surprises along the way. We begin near Mikulov in Dolní Věstonice. While the archaeological museum is not the largest, the location has been famous since 1925 for the discovery of the Věstonice Venus. This smallish figure (11.5 cm high) from fired clay was an extraordinary find in that up until that time it had been assumed that in the Palaeolithic Era (29,000 – 25,000 BC) ceramics were unknown. As such, the Věstonice Venus is actually the oldest ceramic figure in the world. The original figure is on display at the Regional Museum in Brno. But let’s carry on.
From the Věstonice Venus to the Landek Venus
Mikulčice – this early medieval Great Moravia fortified settlement is the largest Slavic archaeological excavation site in the Czech Republic. In addition to tours of the foundations of churches and palaces you can visit two permanent exhibitions of archaeological finds from the 7th – 9th centuries AD. Exhibits at the Museum of Southeast Moravia in Strážnice introduce the style of life and housing of people in Moravian Slovakia and present, among others, the history of wine growing in the region. These exhibits are the only ones of their kind in the Czech Republic. Another landmark that documents the history of the Great Moravia Empire is the Great Moravia Monument in Staré Město; the oldest findings document the presence of Slavs as early as the 6th century. The archaeological skansen in Modrá demonstrates how a settlement from the period of Great Moravia would have appeared. The outdoor museum is composed of structures whose foundations match those of actual archaeological buildings discovered at the site. Numerous interesting events are held at the museum throughout the year. The complex of folk buildings in Rymice near Holešov bears witness to the way of life in the Haná region. The location features original cottages with thatched roofs, an old forge, a windmill, and a saddler’s workshop. The outdoor Wallachia Museum in Rožnov pod Radhoštěm, which documents life in this region in great detail, is the oldest museum of its kind in Central Europe. Thousands of people visit the museum each year. Hallowed Mt. Radhošť and its St. Cyril and Methodius Chapel rise over the town of Rožnov. The mountain, which has long been a cult site for Moravians, can be reached by taking a pleasant walk from Pustevny. Along the way you will pass an interesting statue of the pagan god Radegast. This tour began with Venus and it ends in the same manner. Petřkovice, a world famous geological site, is located at the confluence of the Odra and Ostravice Rivers in Ostrava.
